Genny was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend.

She left this life suddenly on Saturday, Jan. 1, 2022, after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Genny was born in Bronson, Florida, Sept. 21, 1928, daughter of Geneva Berryhill Osteen and Leander (Lee) Alexander Osteen of Otter Creek Florida. She was their third child and only daughter. Her mother passed when she was only six years old.

School was one of her loves, along with books. She graduated with high honors and went on to attend Bob Jones University with a degree in Religion and History. In 1950 she graduated. She and a college friend traveled to Gilmer County West Virginia to teach Bible School for the summer, with a missionary for the American Sunday School Union, Glenn U. Kirkpatrick. After the summer she returned to North Carolina to teach a semester.

In December 1950, she returned to West Virginia and married Glenn Kirkpatrick. There was a huge snow storm that December that shocked the young Florida lady. Genny was a partner with him, in the American Sunday School Union, typing reports, putting out newsletters, teaching Sunday School, Bible School and Bible Camp. They had three children, Glenn Joel (Joey), Rebecca B. (Becky) and Robert William Paul (Bobby).

Summers were filled traveling from county to county, in West Virginia, having Bible Schools ending with a Bible Camp in August.

During the rest of the year, it was a different church or one-room schoolhouse each Sunday for Sunday School and preaching.

In all of her free time, she taught herself to drive and took a class at the Gilmer County Career Center to learn to work on cars. She never missed a band concert, choir concert or ball game that her children were in.

Genny worked for the Dept. of Human Services as a Social Worker, and then for the Area Agency on Aging at The Gilmer County Senior Citizens’ Center.

The bookworm in her, took her back to school at Marshall University for a Masters in Special Education and Learning Disabilities. It was back to teaching, this time in the Gilmer County School system.

Special Olympics became a big part of her life. She loved working with the children and giving them new experiences. For 30 years, she was the Director of Special Olympics in Gilmer County. When the house needed an addition, she built one on. Nothing could stop this lady.

When grandchildren came, there was plenty of love to go around. As with her children, she was always there for them. Stewarts Creek Church was her home church.

Genny served on the board of the Gilmer County Historical Society. The newsletter for the Gilmer County WV Retired School Employees was one of her projects she loved doing.

She was a member of the Martha’s and Mary’s of Gilmer County and received the Helping Hands Award. Others now saw what we always knew, she was the one behind the scenes lifting all the rest of us up.

Genny was preceded in death by her husband Reverend Glenn U. Kirkpatrick, her sons Joey and Bobby Kirkpatrick, her granddaughters Julia Erin Oppe and Oakley Monroe Kirkpatrick, her mother Geneva and father Lee Osteen, her brothers Lee and Richard Osteen.

Surviving are her daughter Becky and son-in-law Jim Oppe, grandchildren children Tiffany and her husband Mitch Davis their children Luke and Emma, Whitney Oppe and Woody Porter, Carrie and her husband Kevin Summers and son Wyatt, Tommy Kirkpatrick his wife Amber their children Keegan and Ava, Charlie Kirkpatrick, Tara and her husband Billy Eagleston and children Kylie and Landyn, and Chandra Kirkpatrick and her children Jade and Trinity. And Genny’s adopted families the Dorans and Pifers.

A funeral service will be conducted at the Ellyson Mortuary, Inc., 2 Vanhorn Drive, Glenville, WV; 26351 at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, 2022, with Rev. Bill Hunt officiating. Burial will follow in the Meadow Lane Cemetery near Glenville. Friends will be received from noon-2 p.m.; Thursday at the mortuary in Glenville.

Shambach, Robert Tilton, Paula White, Ed Young and a whole host of others. We know to avoid the books of people who are promoting the New Apostolic Reformation such as C. Peter Wagner, John Dawson, Jack Deere, Francis Frangipane, Ted Haggard, Bill Hamon, Cindy Jacobs, Rick Joyner, George Otis, Jr., Dutch Sheets, Ed Silvoso and many others. I have spoken a number of times on the subject of the First Nations Movement which is tied to the New Apostolic Reformation. We know we need to avoid the materials of those who teach these things like Richard Twiss, Daniel Kikawa, Terry LeBlanc, YWAM and members of the World Gathering of Indigenous People. Faith does not deny reality.

It sees past it.

There's a lot of misunderstanding today on just what real faith is. This is especially true among the "name-it-and-claim-it" churches who follow the teachings of Kenneth Copeland, Kenneth Hagin, Joel Osteen and many, many others that we can be rich in this world's goods and live good, comfortable lives simply by claiming one or more of God's many promises in the Bible. The teachers of this heresy demonstrate the veracity of their teaching by living the lives of the super-rich with their private mansions on their private estates, their private jets flying from their private airports, all financed by donations from their devoted followers who are desperately trying to crank the prosperity gospel formula to meet their own desperate financial needs. Compare this with Isaiah's description of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ:

“Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed? For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.”

Isaiah's description of our Saviour's character is the extreme opposite of what the prosperity message presents. No where in the Bible does it represent that being rich in this world's goods is somehow a mark of God's favor upon us. Indeed, we are warned the riches of this world can be a stumbling block to our walk with the Lord who wants us to be givers, not getters. Paul warns Timothy that these are those who suppose that gain in worldly goods is a mark of godliness. "I will prove to you I have faith by my (material) prosperity", is what they claim and included in that is healing of every disease. My own experience of the prosperity Gospel is from the inside, not the outside. For six months I moved my family from Northern Ontario to Southern California to work for a multi-millionaire businessman who sat on the boards of both Kenneth Hagin (Sr.) and Kenneth Copeland. My job was to "unlock" the gold from a supposed gold mine (I am an analytical chemist) which my employer had invested $five million in but which so far had produced no gold whatsoever. During a lunchtime meeting with Kenneth Hagin, my boss, the mine manager and several others, I turned to Kenneth Hagin and said, "Brother Hagin, everyone keeps confessing that the Lord says there's lots of gold in the mine but no one, including me, can find any and that is not how I understand how the Lord deals with his children." Brother Hagin's response had my employer choking on his soup spoon. "Who prophesied there was gold there?" To which my gobsmacked employer anxiously replied, Brother Hagin, You Did!!! You said there was great wealth in the sand". Hagin's last comment was,"I think it's time someone found out what the Lord meant by great wealth!" My employment there ended exactly six months after it began.

These big name prosperity teachers may have started out on the right track but slowly their focus changed from serving the Lord to serving their ministry in order to keep the cash rolling in. The tragedy is their cash comes out of the pockets of hundreds of thousands of struggling saints all hoping the faith formula will work for them and give a 100-fold return on their investment. Judging by the ones I have met over the years who believe this teaching, it doesn't work. We cannot fake true faith, no matter how many times we confess something to be true or want it to be true. True faith does not deny the physical reality of a problem. I can confess 'til I'm blue in the face that I don't have cancer, that God has healed me because I've asked Him to, but the X-rays, CAT scans, MRI's and PET scans say otherwise and the pain in my body only serves to confirm their findings but what I can say by FAITH is that the life I committed unto Jesus 69 years ago is still in his hands and under his control. I may not understand all that is happening to me these days but I can and will trust Him who has proved His faithfulness to me over and over again. Like Job, I cry out, "Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him." Like Peter whom Jesus asked, "Are you going to leave as well?" I say, "To whom shall I go, YOU have the words of eternal life!" In my last blog I said it is through much tribulation that we enter Gods Kingdom and sadly, it is these areas that the prosperity Gospel fails us because it has no answer for unanswered prayers except to keep repeating the mantra that we are healed. True faith sees past the worldly reality to the heavenly reality that reassures us we already have what the world cannot yet see and convicts us of it.

Over the past few weeks, you may have been making many preparations for celebrating Christmas—decorating the house, buying gifts, sending cards, baking and cooking. It’s easy to see why Christmas is one of our favorite times of the year. There’s nothing like the joy that comes from sharing our love and what we have with family and friends in our own special ways. This Christmas we encourage you to remember that the true Christmas spirit is wrapped up in John 3:16—God loved us so much that He gave His Son, Jesus, so that we can have eternal life. Beyond the great food, beyond the gifts, beyond the lights and music, God reminds us of the most wonderful gift that has ever been given…the gift of Jesus. The babe in the manger. The Savior of the world, who brought the promise of unconditional love, unending hope, and eternal life to every person who believes in Him. When the apostle Paul was writing to the church at Corinth about the joy and blessing of giving, he was overwhelmed at the thought of all that God has given us. So instead of trying to put it all in words, he just ended with, “Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!” The New Living Translation says, “Thank God for His Son—a gift too wonderful for words!” Jesus is God’s perfect, indescribable gift. And the amazing thing is that not only are we personally able to receive this gift that is too wonderful for words, but we are able to share Him with others. More important than making our homes ready, we need to make sure our hearts are ready, both to receive Christ’s love and to extend it to others. When we do, our arms can be the arms of Jesus as we reach out to others in love. Our voice can be the voice of Jesus as we share a word of encouragement and hope with others. Our hands can be the hands of Jesus that bring healing and comfort to those in need.
