Hi Courtney! for the weird writer asks please:
4. What’s a word that makes you go absolutely feral?
36. They say to Write What You Know. Setting aside for a moment the fact that this is terrible advice...what do you Know?
Hi Rae! Thanks for the ask. These are fun!
4. What’s a word that makes you go absolutely feral?
Ooof. Irregardless. Like, setting aside the “sounds fake but okay” of it all… While it is technically an actual word, this clumsy, ridiculous double-negative mess means the exact same thing without the discordant “ir-”. Which is nonsensical! Just say “regardless”! But wait, what’s that? Most people who use this word actually think it means the opposite?
I just, I can’t.
36. They say to Write What You Know. Setting aside for a moment the fact that this is terrible advice...what do you Know?
I don’t actually think it’s always terrible advice! You certainly shouldn’t be constricted to writing what you know, or let it limit the stories you tell. But I think there’s a lot to be said for bringing some aspect of your own knowledge or history or experience into what you write, as long as it’s used as a tool to strengthen characters and serve the story.
But to actually answer the question… I know birds. African and South American parrots, specifically. Is that weird? My dad was a breeder for my whole childhood, and I basically grew up in an aviary. He specialized in Congo and Timneh Greys (and for a long time was the go-to Grey breeder in the country), but Meyers, Senegals, Caiques, Capes, Indian and African Ringnecks, Amazons, whatever. You name it, we raised it. We belonged to a regional bird club that had meetings and shows. I learned how to handfeed baby birds at 11. We all had our own pets — my mom had Poncho, who was exactly like every African Grey you’ve ever seen a special on, my sister had a peachface lovebird, Romeo, and I had my childhood cockatiel, Tango (who was a Lutino, a big sweetheart, and a pretty good talker but loved to sing). It’s been years, but I can still tell you what dominant and recessive genes you need to pair to get a whiteface pearl pied cockatiel or an albino ringneck.
I have no idea when any of that would ever be helpful in terms of writing, but there it is.

Peachfaced Lovebirds are a real invasive pest here in Arizona. Escaped pets that have moved in mobbing and kicking out native species like the Cactus Wren from their homes they make in Saguaro cactus.
These photos were taken just a mile away from my place in suburban Phoenix

Mini Lovebird Saga 2.0
So after going to the amusement park we made a pitstop to check out the previously mentioned Lovebird and I ended up getting her cause I am pretty darn sure they weren't breeders based on their personality, severe lack of English fluency, and general house details so I got her for $120 which is on the expensive end for a not-tamed Lovebird without a cage but within my price range for a bird that would not fund a breeder
She's a "Blue" Peachface Lovebird (not reproductively compatible with Popsicle regardless of sex who is a Fischer) if I am ID mutations correctly, previous owner had her supposedly for 8 months and she was hand tamed before that if I understand the honestly difficult due to language barriers communication, so I am assuming the situation is she was one of three under-educated purchases by the Vietnamese family I bought her from.
From the brief time I've observed and interacted with her (about an hour 😂) I think I already figured out her behavioral profile and shit compared to other birds I've rescued and she's already getting comfortable
I was also 1000% correct that Popsicle was lonely cause she's been SUPER chatty and making a lot of positive social chirps and calls I hadnt heard until I brought this new friend in so thats a great sign
Only issue is I think our new friend probably hasnt been out of her cage much at all for 8 months and is easily startled and so I think Popsicle is a little much for her. The two I think come from similar but opposite situations so its kinda funny (in an interesting and coincidence way)
Either way, I am 1) not taking their gender ID of her too seriously on the account they didnt seem very familiar with bird care and 2) Lovebirds usually require DNA testing or selective breeding to sex them confidently so unless the breeder they got her from (assuming shes from a breeder) told them, I take any sexing of a lovebird lightly
Anyhow, they didn't tell me a name either cause she didn't have one or language barriers, so I gotta give her one. Thankfully I have DID and am good at naming things. So far I think we will go with Pocky (Short for Apocolypse which has many references) cause its stuck somewhat and Popsicle and Pocky sound like a good duo 😂
Either way I took Pocky to hang out a bit in the bathroom with Popsicle while I showered and I think shes rapidly figured out I'm chill cause now shes fluffed and sleeping
Meanwhile Popsicle is VERY engaged and interested in the new friend
More details and photos to come later once theyve settled in some

RESCUE BIRDS FOR SALE FREE
Medical expenses, food, cages, toys, essential equipment, rent, and payroll are ongoing expenses. Adoption fee includes 1 large cage, 1 small cage, and 1 travel cage (ie vet carrier). There is never enough time to get the pictures updated so please visit the rescue to see all. However, many more of these birds need to be adopted by committed owners who have taken the time to thoroughly understand what it takes to care for the birds. Non-profit bird sanctuaries provide homes for some birds for whom their owners can no longer provide care. The challenge for Greyhaven is to find the resources to care for the ever-increasing number of birds entering its facilities. All of the birds below are currently available for adoption.
