Ok, I don't get starstruck too often but when you realize you're in the company of greatness and involuntarily start punishing them from their back seat about individual menu items, when you're being outfitted with baked goods way out of your league and putting shout outs to her vegan Butterfingers (pictured) in the middle of your band's This Is Hardcore set, you're there. Manayunk Brewery

As you continue along Main St. in Manayunk, heading southward, the “bustle” of businesses begins to slow down and it is here that you find a well-advertised, slightly set back restaurant, The Manayunk Brewery.  Since I am underage and actually know nothing about beer, I can’t tell you how their beer is or what exactly they do there, but they appear to do some brewing onsite, with large metal containers off in a side room. 

(Dining Area)

The Brewery occupies a gigantic space.  Up front, there is a sushi bar which was not yet open when I arrived (around 2pm on a weekday), past which there are dining rooms and beyond that, even more dining space and a pizza oven.  There is a Toledo “no springs,” “honest weight” scale off to the right when and a long bar to the left, and the decor within the dining room includes many bright pop-art posters of famous musicians, such as Bob Marley and Frank Sinatra.  The entire restaurant gives off a warm, modern, “exposed brick” sort of feel.

The menu, not including the sushi bar, is rather gourmet all-American, with nice looking burgers, sandwiches, salads etc.  After 4 p.m., there are more dining options, with dishes such as ribs, crab cakes and filet mignons available.  Most of the fare available before then are sandwiches, salads and their stone-oven pizzas.

I ordered a stone-oven baked chicken quesadilla which is listed as an appetizer, but was definitely large enough to be an entrée, with guacamole as an add-on.   Some of the other particularly scrumptious-sounding dishes on their menu that I did not get to trying included their Main Street Poutine (French fries covered in gravy), and their crab cake sandwich.

The chicken quesadilla — which came with sour cream, pico de gallo and since I had requested it, guacamole — had roasted red peppers inside and a good amount of melted cheddar cheese, which was neither too gooey nor overly chewy.   Unlike many quesadillas, the cheese was rather flavorful.  I loved the fact that the quesadilla was not greasy, since it was baked.  The top piece of tortilla was nice and crispy, but the bottom piece was a bit soggy, and the pico de gallo seemed as though it were made of cooked tomatoes as opposed to raw and could have used more onions and cilantro, but it served as a nice refreshing note to the rest of the dish.  Of course as a Californian, I’m a bit more sensitive about my Mexican food, but all in all I highly enjoyed this quesadilla.  Granted, I was extremely hungry, but it was an extremely satisfying meal.

The person I was eating with ordered the gluten free version of the Tuscan Chicken Sandwich, with roasted red peppers, pesto, spinach, etc. and did not personally feel that the flavors meshed well.  I, however, did not taste it, so I can’t really judge.  She said that she’s been there before though and that the ribs were very good.

No meal is ever complete without dessert, so of course I had to get a look at the dessert menu.  I was hoping they’d have a molten chocolate lava cake, but alas there was none!  However, they did have lots of good-looking different options, such as pumpkin cheesecake, which I almost ordered, pumpkin pie, a cookie in a skillet with ice cream on top, etc.  I ordered their “Peanut Butter Bomb,” which consisted of a bottom layer of “chocolate candy bar,” as they called it, topped with “peanut butter ganache,” chocolate mousse and a thin layer of chocolate with crushed nuts.  It was luxurious, rich and very delicious.  The bottom “chocolate candy bar,” sort of reminded me of a dense brownie (though the dessert is said to be gluten free) or chocolate power bar, and the peanut butter ganache was like condensed peanut butter, but sweeter, smoother and lighter.  The chocolate mousse was not very chocolatey but served as a nice fluffier contrast to the very heavy chocolate bar and peanut butter.  It was intensely peanut buttery and all of the textures mixed nicely together. 

Between the atmosphere and the food, it was a very good, satisfying dining experience for me, though my dining partner was disappointed with her meal.  (Bonus: they have a frequent diner rewards program!)
