OJT EATS | Pedlar Canary Wharf
Tumblr media
One Canada Square has had a restaurant in the lobby for a few years now but it has recently changed to become Pedler.  A restaurant in a lobby is a great place to sit and people watch and so having a plce that serves great food and drinks would just be even better!  We went down to give it a go.
Tumblr media
First up was some kara age.  This came with a sesame sauce and a bunch of spring onions on top.  The chicken was well fried and juicy.  The sauce was good but you had to be careful to eat it quick, otherwise the chicken would lose some crunch.  All in all, a good start!
Tumblr media
The soft shell crab slider wasn’t actually available on the day we went but they were able to make a soft shell crab dish with vermicelli instead (I guess they may have been out of slider buns).  It was super tasty; I think I actually would’ve preferred the vermicelli over the slider itself.
Tumblr media
This was a mushroom medley that came in a foil packet.  This was packed with flavour; there was clearly a good chunk of butter that was cooked with it and there were a few sesame seeds in there as well for good measure.
Tumblr media
This was a chicken and prawn rice / risotto dish.  It was a little heavy on the white pepper; there was a pretty hefty peppery kick.  Other than that, there were big chunks of chicken and a good number of fairly big juicy prawns which we liked.  There was also a scattering of chicken skin on top which I personally really enjoyedd ( I do love chicken skin).
Tumblr media
The last dish we had was a side of brussel sprouts.  I really like brussels and am a firm believer that they are not just for Xmas.  These had a lovely little char to them and just went really well with the rest of the food.
Overall, we had a very enjoyable meal here.  It’s probably still the best lobby to get food in and a handy place for a quick drink or 2 in the wharf.  If I was working in the wharf, this would definitely be a regular haunt!

... as we know from the war on drugs and the war on terror, for those in the business of providing protection, high threat levels are bread and butter. Likewise, for those in the business of healing race relations, racial division is your sworn enemy but your secret friend—so much so that wounding and healing become part of the same operation. -- Dr. Lyell Asher, "Why Colleges Are Becoming Cults"

Doctor On Display: Longleat | Reeltime Pictures | Doctor Who
Available Now from Reeltime Pictures!
In the early 1970s, the BBC decided to launch a series of exhibitions featuring monsters and props from Doctor Who.
Over the next three decades, untold thousands of children (and adults too!) were thrilled by a mix of innovative, exciting and stunning extravaganzas!
For many fans, these exhibitions were their first and only real chance to get close-up to their favourite TV programme … and the memories they share in this innovative documentary series are bound together by interviews with experts and people who actually worked at them!
In the early 70s, the Marquis of Bath, on the lookout for anything that would encourage more visitors to his estate at Longleat, decided that Doctor Who would be just the ticket!
In this production, we go behind the scenes in Wiltshire to reveal the story of Doctor Who’s longest running exhibition, meeting the people who made it all happen, and those who visited … often many times a year!
There’s drama, celebrations, days out and fire! It’s all here!

Doctor Who: The War Machines
I rewatched this serial on 29 December 2022, in a world that’s partially anticipated in this tale of computer networks, artificial intelligence (in name), transhumanism, and cyber-warfare. Kit Pedlar’s influence is obvious, and I ponder idly on how many of today’s fascistic tech bros watched stuff like this in their childhoods and saw a blue print rather than a warning…
I have seen this story before, and I am pleased to say that it holds up well. In fact, it’s like a breath of fresh air again, as well as a harbinger of the Dr Who I grew up with. The War Machines is a sturdier story than many of those that survive in these last two seasons. There’s a decent mystery, told in a thriller style popular in the 1960s where the audience knows more about what’s going on and the excitement lies in seeing whether or not our heroes learn and react in a way that will save the day. It's a solid story to close out the third season of Dr Who.
We also swap out travelling companions, with Dodo choosing to leave while recuperating from WOTAN’s influence. On reflection, I think this actually suits the character. In all that survives of her time as a travelling companion (which is a fair bit), she’s constantly shown as impetuous. I suspect she may well have regretted her decision once she realised the Doctor and TARDIS are gone… Sadly, we don’t get to see Steven’s departure from the TARDIS. That occurred in the preceding serial, The Savages, which was destroyed by the BBC.
By binge-watching each story over a night or two, and bringing my erratic knowledge of how the show was produced to it, it’s fairly obvious that all the changes in production personnel during the mid-1960s meant they didn’t really have a firm grasp on who or what the characters were once Barbara and Ian left. Dodo wanders in and wanders out again, and we never really get a sense of who she is and what she wants in life. Steven is introduced as a far future space pilot abandoned on Mechanus and imprisoned by the Mechanoids for a long time, but both those elements disappeared as quickly as his toy panda.
The War Machines introduces Polly (with no surname given) and Ben Jackson, and both immediately hit the ground running as people the audience can identify with. Interestingly, from a how-to-introduce-characters point of view, they are strangers to each other when they meet at the same time as they meet Dodo and the Doctor. That means that introductions can be made without anyone having the upper hand. Also, the Doctor takes the lead and he’s marvellous to behold.
I wonder which famous DJ the bartender referred to when she notices the Doctor entering the Inferno nightclub… A quick look at possible contenders does not bode well, so it’s just as well he wasn’t named.
Doctor? Doctor Who? Yep, this is the story in which the character is named Doctor Who by the megalomaniac computer, WOTAN. It is curious that WOTAN knows what TARDIS means, and noteworthy that the pluralised “dimensions” persists.
Fun fact: according to Ben’s hat band, he’s assigned to HMS Teazer. A quick search revealed that “HMS TEAZER … was placed on the Disposal List in 1965 and sold to BISCO for breaking-up at Dalmuir where she arrived in tow on 7th August that year.” (https://www.naval-history.net/xGM-Chrono-10DD-57T-HMS_Teazer.htm accessed 30 December 2022)

So I'm reading Maskerade to my kids (they love Pterry) and there's a bit where a swan (just before it dies) sings a line from a made-up opera (called Lohenshaak). The song is called the Pedlar's Song and it's in whatever the Discworld equivalent of German is: Schneide meinen eigenen Hals... So one of my sons, just for funsies, decides to find out what the German actually means.
It means Cut My Own Throat. Because it's the PEDLAR'S SONG.
Terry Pratchett put a CMOT Dibbler reference into a song for a throwaway scene for a swan, in German. And I never knew because I don't speak German.
Did you know?? Anyway, gnu Terry Pratchett and the joy of jokes for their own sake even if only a small fraction of the readers ever notice.
