Today is Wet Beast Wednesday!
Today’s wet beast is: Sea Pen
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Olive’s wet beast fact: contrary to its misleading name, this colony of polyps can not, in fact, write anything. Illiterate liar.
Stay tuned for more Wet Beast Wednesdays!

At 2994 meters on a never-before-surveyed seamount north of Johnston Atoll, the team made a thrilling discovery — the chance to examine an animal spotted for the very first time in the Pacific Ocean! The sea pen, a colonial cnidarian, had a single large feeding polyp with pinnate (barbed) tentacles stretching over 40 cm from its 2-meter-long stalk.
Solumbellula monocephalus is the only described species in the genus and until this sighting was only known to live in the North and South Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Before this discovery of the colony, the animal had never been seen in the Pacific Ocean. Further review of the footage and this sample will help experts determine if this is the first Pacific S.monocephalus or potentially a new species in this ocean basin.
Enjoy some beautiful close-ups of this coral relative that astounded our team with a detailed view of its stinging feeding tentacles that capture marine snow and food particles drifting by its home on an underwater mountain sedimented saddle. Two individuals were spotted on this dive, confirming a population within the protection of the Johnston Unit of Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument. This huge range expansion of Solumbellula in the Pacific Ocean reminds us how important ocean exploration efforts are to understanding this diversity of our planet!

Taken the same day as the previous post, this is a phosphorescent sea pen (Pennatula phosphorea), or röd fjäderpenna, found in the fjord. It clearly wasn't in it's preferred living situation where the basal peduncle is buried in soft sediment while the branches filter for food. I was unable to see the bioluminescence this species exhibits, but I was able to feel is that the sea pen's fleshy mass is supported by an internal rod made of calcium carbonate. #animal #animals #djur #wildlife #natur #naturliv #nature #invertebrate #invertebrates #octocoral #fauna #sjöpenna #sjöpennor #seapen #seapens #nässeldjur #cnidarian #cnidarians #animalia #cnidaria #anthozoa #octocorallia #pennatulacea #pennatulidae #pennatula #pennatulaphosphorea #phosphorescentseapen #rödfjäderpenna (at Klubbans biologiska station) https://www.instagram.com/p/CeHJFPpKisO/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Sea -pen by Mario Mendez.
Sea pens are colonial marine cnidarians belonging to the order Pennatulacea. There are 14 families within the order. *Sea pens are sometimes sold in the aquarium trade. However, they are generally hard to care for because they need a very deep substrate and have special food requirements.

Threesome symbiotic relationship!
#ImageOfTheDay:
December 29, 2020: This image illustrates two types of symbiotic relationships. First is a zoanthid that has paratized a bubblegum coral, feeding off of the coral and causing it harm. Second is the brittle star, which is clinging to the branches of the zoanthid and coral in order to get further up off the seafloor into the water column to feed or for protection.

Parts of this threesome are:
Octocorallia (also known as Alcyonaria) is a subclass of Anthozoa comprising around 3,000 species of water-based organisms formed of colonial polyps with 8-fold symmetry. It includes the blue coral, soft corals, sea pens, and gorgonians (sea fans and sea whips) within three orders: Alcyonacea, Helioporacea, and Pennatulacea. These organisms have an internal skeleton secreted by mesoglea and polyps with eight tentacles and eight mesentaries. As with all Cnidarians these organisms have a complex life cycle including a motile phase when they are considered plankton and later characteristic sessile phase.

Non-gorgonian octocoral genera, and morphotypes within genera, that were surveyed along the west coast of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Jeddah, Thuwal, Al Lith and the Farasan Islands. Scale bars 1 cm.
Brittle stars, serpent stars, or ophiuroids are echinoderms in the class Ophiuroidea closely related to starfish. They crawl across the sea floor using their flexible arms for locomotion. The ophiuroids generally have five long, slender, whip-like arms which may reach up to 60 cm (24 in) in length on the largest specimens.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Plate of brittle stars from the Kunstformen der Natur from Ernst Haeckel (1904).
Over 60 species of brittle stars are known to be bioluminescent. Most of these produce light in the green wavelengths, although a few blue-emitting species have also been discovered. Both shallow-water and deep-sea species of brittle stars are known to produce light. Presumably, this light is used to deter predators.
Zoanthids (order Zoantharia also called Zoanthidea or Zoanthiniaria) are an order of cnidarians commonly found in coral reefs, the deep sea and many other marine environments around the world. These animals come in a variety of different colonizing formations and in numerous colors. They can be found as individual polyps, attached by a fleshy stolon or a mat that can be created from small pieces of sediment, sand and rock.

Sea Pansy
The Renilla reniformis glows by the means of a Green Fluorescent Protein found in its body. These guys live on the coast of the Atlantic where they spend their days eating plankton. They reproduce asexually and live in fear of the striped sea slug. It is part of the group Pennatulacea. The Sea Pansey glows only when agitated, which seems like a pretty cool thing to do.They are small and usually found in the shape of a heart <3.

Amazing Photos in the Sea - Underwater Creatures Photos Jellyfish Jellyfish aren’t fish but invertebrates, animals that lack backbones and even brains. Yet 30,000-odd species do far more than survive—they thrive in ocean waters the world over. Translucent Marine Animals Sometimes it’s better to remain unseen. These nearly invisible marine animals use their natural translucence to good effect. Whale baby In a pod or family the baby whale is known as a calf, the female whale is known as cow and the male is referred to as the bull. In terms of mating periods many species of whale have two primary seasons known as mating season and feeding season. During mating season various species of whale can be seen traveling towards the equator to take advantage of the warmer climates and begin mating and/or baring offspring. While this period varies from species to species and depending on the climate they live in mating season typically occurs during the colder winter months of the year when the waters begin to freeze over and their food supply begins to migrate away and move towards warmer climates. whale sharks Every winter young whale sharks come together in the waters off the coast of Djibouti. Underwater Garden Underwater Sculpture Garden, Grenada Green Anemone Off the coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, is homefor  many of the most amazing creatures, one  of species which is green anenome . Sea Pens, New Zealand Sea pens are colonial marine cnidarians belonging to the order Pennatulacea. There are 16 families within the order; they are thought to have a cosmopolitan distribution in tropical and temperate waters worldwide. Sea pens are grouped with the octocorals ("soft corals"), together with sea whips or gorgonians. Coral Coral reefs are some of Earth’s richest and most diverse ecosystems. Tiny animals build these largest biological structures on the planet—some of which can be seen from space. Sea anemones Many of these colorful ocean “flowers” are actually venomous predators. But anemones also live in symbiotic harmony with several other species. Yellownose Gobies, Dutch Caribbean The yellow rose goby--also known as the hi-fin red banded goby, the striped goby, the black-rayed shrimp goby and the filament-finned prawn-goby--is a strikingly attractive, small (to two and one-half inches in length) fish that will readily form a symbiotic relationship with pistol shrimp from the genus Alpheus. #amazingphotos #seacreatures #amazingpictures #deepseacreatures #amazingimages #waterimages #amazingpics #seaphotos #amazingnaturephotos #photosofwater #worldamazingphotos #AmazingPhotosintheSea #UnderwaterCreaturesPhotos #amazingphotosofnature #Jellyfish #TranslucentMarineAnimals #Whalebaby #whalesharks #UnderwaterGarden #GreenAnemone #SeaPens #Coral #Seaanemones #YellownoseGobies #photos #amazing #pictures https://youtu.be/St07so8Pi5c

Taken 2022 22nd January, these are phosphorescent sea pen (Pennatula phosphorea), or röd fjäderpenna, @evolutionsmuseet being displayed. In Sweden, they occur on the west coast. This species lives in sandy and muddy substrates at 10-100m depths positioned within currents to feed on plankton. As their species name implies, they are one of several species in their genus to exhibit bioluminescence. #animal #animals #djur #wildlife #natur #naturliv #nature #naturalhistory #naturhistoriska #preservedspecimen #fauna #sjöpenna #sjöpennor #seapen #seapens #nässeldjur #cnidarian #cnidarians #animalia #cnidaria #anthozoa #octocorallia #pennatulacea #pennatulidae #pennatula #pennatulaphosphorea #phosphorescentseapen #rödfjäderpenna (at Evolutionsmuseet) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZaEpX7PC4o/?utm_medium=tumblr
