I don't like leather and don't like gourmands, but I can get behind this leather gourmand if we want to call it that. It's Dzing! by L'Artisan Parfumeur. It picks up the benzoin where Candy left off and takes the sweets to the circus. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When you first spray it, you definitely get a blast of the barnyard and cotton candy mixed together, maybe you’re at a kid's birthday party at the petting zoo. The barnyard smell is thanks to castoreum but also hay which brings a sweetness. There's a bit of a skanky musk, a waxiness, and powdery sweet benzoin. I like smelling weird things. Scents that are more conceptual than wearable are not a problem, but even I meet my match. Enter Red Hoba which officially weaned me off blind buys. It's interesting to review this one after Dunhill Egyptian Smoke because to the extent that papyrus is quintessentially Egyptian, these offer very different interpretations.  Red Hoba is part of Xerjoff's Shooting Stars series but there are no embers in this meteor. It is a cold rock buried in the earth, a warning sign of destruction. (The other warning sign is Red Hoba's almost €400 price, but I digress.) Evelyn O'Connell played by Rachel Weisz in the Mummy perfectly symbolizes this scent. As a character, she bridges intellectual and sensuous, male and female, past and present. Also as half British and half Egyptian her presence attempts to reconcile and justify the colonizer and the exploited. Disembodied and unisex, Red Hoba seems to hold many of the same tensions.  Described as gourmand, but beyond a faint opening of dried fruit, Red Hoba is primarily the scent of wet leather-bound parchment and dust which seems fitting for our Egyptologist Evelyn. In this way, Red Hoba's papyrus note is hyperrealistic. Combined with iris, it is a papery powdery ode to mold and must with very faint hints of jasmine and sandalwood in the background. There is a very mysterious, ancient and even ominous quality to Red Hoba that hints of myths and things buried in sand. However it is ultimately unpleasant. It is a watery facsimile of Egypt– diluted, bastardized, othered. A colonialist fantasy in love with death and excavation versus the red blooded present. If you follow me you've seen me mention Chanel N°22, always with reverence 🖤 aside from my beloved Bois de Iles Exclusif, Chanel N°22 edt is something completely different. My mother wore this fragrance for many years & whenever we would visit her house, I'd always spritz some on. This was back when it was "discontinued" for awhile (probably just not sold here) then came back & I found a bottle for her at my now closed favourite perfume boutique. That was the last time she wore it - over 25 years ago. Biddy was a toddler, Bunny was in elementary school & we'd spend every summer in Burnstown at mums. Fast forward to today...my mum has passed. I have a few mls of her old bottle of N°22 she gave me years ago. Finding a bottle of N°22 edt today is practically impossible. One of my oldest fragrance friends, an OG from the @realmakeupalley frag board days, sent me this bottle of vintage N°22. The experience of wearing this perfume is feeling not only like my mum is close, but that my daughters are little again. That cool girl aesthetic in a bottle. As comforting as a hot shower, warm lather on skin, earthiness but also a hint of stewed fruit, like your mom packing your lunch, and when you gave her a hug before going off to school, she smelled faintly of the pear she was just cutting but also of soap and skin. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ That's basically what you get in the new 22 Orris by Ledda. It's not very orris-y but more of a fruity musk with hints of earthy orris in and around the fruit and musk, which is ambrette. If you've smelled Glossier You or Diptyque's Fleur de Peau, then you'll be familiar with the ambrette. It's like a warm shower, really comforting without being hot, heavy, or cozy. I really enjoy it in every perfume that has it and it's the most addictive finish for a perfume. 22 Orris adds the fruity component which adds a considerable dose of sweetness.
