All Passion Spent: Episode 2 (1.2, BBC, 1986)
"You really must not speak as though my life has been a tragedy. I had everything that most women would envy; I had position, comfort, children, and a husband I loved. Truly loved, Mr. Fitzgeorge. I had nothing to complain of."
"Except that you were defrauded of the one thing that mattered, face it, Lady Slane: your children, your husband, your splendour... were nothing but obstacles that kept you from yourself. Perhaps you were too young to know any better, but when you chose that life, you know, you sinned against the light."
"You're right, of course."
"Course I'm right, old Fitz may be a comic figure, but he retains some sense of values."
"Don't scold me any more, Mr. Fitzgeorge. I assure you that if I did wrong, I paid for it. But you must not blame my husband."
"Oh, I don't. According to his lights, he gave you everything you could desire. He merely killed you, that's all. Men do kill women, and most women enjoy being killed - so I am told."

Last year, a friend sent me the link to this cute, stop-motion animated special called ‘Snowden’s Christmas’ (1999). Knowing it would cheer me up because one of my favourite actors, Peter MacNicol, was starring in it. Now, it’s a cozy Christmas tradition for me to watch.'
'Only felt right to draw the little snowman while I’m in a very festive mood. ☃️

Kate Bush: Hounds Of Love (1985)
You know what I did during my two-week vacation in June? I blew as much money as I could. It was during my second-ever record-store victory tour where I re-visited the very location that started it all for me: Cheapo’s in Commack. Stu Cheapo wasn’t there, but two of his staffers were. For me, music-diving is an Olympic sport to me which I’ve won plenty of medals for. (Yeah, I know such a thing doesn’t exist but work with me and let’s pretend it happened.) I was ready to throw down as much of my savings as I could on CD singles and jazz / fusion records as I usually do when I’m there. I dart right on over to said jazz / fusion and soul section like I always do when I walk on the store and furiously dig in.
I usually don’t pay attention to what’s playing on the overhead while I’m minding my own and swim through the racks of rotting, chipped vinyl sleeves and inhale the stale smell of dust fibers and dehydrated cardboard. I could care less, to be honest. But this time I did. What played on the overhead could be or preferably would like to be described as imaginative, captivating and enchanting performance art by millions of her fans. I called it a trigger response that almost had me slam my head against the fucking wall, and we're not even talking about drunk punk. From what I heard with my little Edward Snowden bunny ears was that one of the staffers behind the counter mentioned to his co-worker saw a recent episode of Stranger Things where Kate Bush's music was recently used. I didn’t pick up on it right away but it took me a good fifteen minutes to realize what the hell was going on.
What was this?! My biggest "what the fuck is this" moment of the year, that’s what. I didn't know who it was at first but sure enough it was her. This was the artist that everyone is making Peter Gabriel jokes about? I ask myself how anyone would even tolerate this. I'm hearing all these animal noises coming from Cheapo's vintage speakers and It drove me crazy having to tolerate her music for three. hours. straight. Count 'em. That's how long I was there for. Meanwhile, that guy also said to his co-worker how he has almost all of her albums and looked forward in filling in the gaps to complete his collection, which when you multiply zero by zero together is why this is fuck-all going on. If there was ever a bi-partisan vote to shut this place down until this shit got rectified then that proposal would no doubt be vetoed and shot down like the last condor in existence. It also doesn't help that every time I see Kate Bush I see my ex- who looks exactly like her. Oh, Lord. At this rate, I'll never be over her.
You had no idea how bad I wanted out of the store. Yet, I prevailed because I have a very high threshold of pain and that was enough to scour the entire store and leave with $320.00 worth of music. Believe me when I tell you that I wanted to run up that hill and jump over that fucking counter and make a deal with God plea bargain with the prosecutor to throat kick whoever thought this was a great idea and get away with it.

Ada Beatrice Queen Victoria Louise Virginia Smith (“Bricktop”) (August 14, 1894 - January 31, 1984) vaudevillian actress, singer, nightclub owner, and international celebrity host, was born in Alderson, West Virginia to Thomas and Hattie Thompson Smith. She began performing at the age of five, playing Harry in Uncle Tom’s Cabin at Haymarket Theater in Chicago. She earned a permanent chorus role at the Pekin Theatre. A truancy officer tracked her down and she was forced to quit performing and return to school.
She began touring with the Theater Owners’ Booking Association and Pantages Vaudeville circuits. She appeared alongside vaudevillian entertainers. She earned the nickname “Bricktop”. She performed in a wide variety of locations including Chicago, San Francisco, Vancouver, and New York. Baron’s Exclusive Club in Harlem became one of her regular venues, she convinced the owner to hire Elmer Snowden’s Washingtonian’s band, which included an undiscovered Duke Ellington.
She performed in Paris at the Le Grand Duc nightclub. She began hosting and entertaining at charity events and parties for celebrities, where she befriended influential artists such as the authors F. Scott Fitzgerald and John Steinbeck, and the composer and musician Cole Porter. Porter wrote a song for her titled, “Miss Otis Regrets She’s Unable to Lunch Today.” She became involved with the Paris nightclub scene, regularly performing at The Music Box and Le Grand Duc.
She opened her nightclub called Chez Bricktop’s. The club regularly featured high-profile guests and performers. Known for smoking her signature cigars, became known in Paris as the “doyenne of café society.”
She married New Orleans musician Peter Conge (1929) she moved her nightclub to 66 Rue Pigalle. She separated from her husband, but they never divorced. She made radio broadcasts for the French government. She attempted unsuccessfully to recreate her nightclub enterprise in New York.
She opened and closed nightclubs in Mexico City, Paris, and Rome but none were as successful as her original Paris nightclub. She recorded her first and only song, “So Long Baby” with jazz artist Cy Coleman. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

All Passion Spent: Episode 1 (1.1, BBC, 1986)
"She's not one of those clever women, thank God. Mother has always allowed others to make decisions for her. And now that Father has gone..."
"I suppose, since I have always lived at home, that I should really bear the brunt."
"Brunt, Edith? I'm sure we shall all regard it as a privilege to look after Mother. Brunt is an entirely unsuitable expression."
"Oh dear, when you say it like that, Carrie, I'm not even sure what it means."

216 - Snowden
Welcome all our new CIA listeners, because this week we are talking about 2016′s Snowden. Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as controversial whistleblower Edward Snowden, the film follows Snowden’s journey through exposing the surveillance state and his exile to Russia, all while maintaining his relationship with girlfriend Lindsay Mills (played by Shailene Woodley). With Oliver Stone at the helm and Laura Poitras’ Snowden doc Citizenfour having recently earned the Best Documentary Feature Oscar, the film arrived with high expectations that it immediately disappointed when this bland biopic debuted at TIFF.
This episode, Joe gives us a recap of his New York Film Festival experience this year before we dive into Stone’s misfire. We also talk about Oscar winners that have played Oscar winners, Gordon-Levitt’s distracting baritone while playing Snowden, Peter Gabriel’s film awards history, and Stone’s fall from the height of his cultural significance in the 1980s and 1990s.
Topics also include TIFF premieres that open to general audiences during the festival, the 2011 Best Supporting Actress race that Woodley narrowly missed, and Chris’ ongoing journey with Survivor.

This time, the shooter lives to do some ‘splainin’. Do you wonder if he might get around to ‘splainin’ his role with the shady non-governmental orgs (NGOs) supported by the CIA who enabled his travels to Ukraine and his efforts there recruiting global mutts to fight for the Nazi-ish Azov Battalion? Perhaps he might rat-out actual government officials who assisted him in his colorful misadventures? As Ed Snowden remarked on “X”, wannabe Trump assassin Ryan Routh has “something of an Oswald vibe” — meaning, well-groomed by the intel boys, to be used as required.
Perhaps we’ll find out — if nothing fatal happens to befall Mr. Routh while in custody — how exactly he learned Mr. Trump would be on the links that afternoon? The candidate’s round of golf that day was supposedly a snap decision known only amongst his innermost circle. Or how did Mr. Routh figure out the most advantageous fairway to lay at for a clear shot? The FBI is on the case, you may be reassured to know.
Things political are speeding up with the autumnal quickening. The blob is truly and deeply a’fright. So many blobsters will be liable to pay for their multitudinous crimes against the people of this country if Mr. Trump squeaks back into power that such a future is unthinkable to them. And yet, nothing has worked to deactivate this. . . this golden golem stalking the land. Nothing to show for the immense catalog of lawfare cases concocted to drain his wealth and stuff him into a prison cell — and astounding how amateurish they all were! Engoron and Merchan, two boobies hatched out of Judicial Error Central. Fani Willis, a walking-talking banana peel! Merrick Garland, saving democracy one abuse of power at a time!
The Butler, PA, head-shot op came awfully close to eliminating their, uh, problem, but no cigar. The Palm Beach golf course ambush had a Peter Sellers vibe, wouldn’t you agree? With the rifle muzzle poking through the shrubbery behind a fence. What next? A pizza with pepperoni, mushrooms, and cyanide? Maybe try to drop an anvil on Mr. Trump’s head from a passing airplane? (Beep-beep. . . woosh!)

Movie Reviews:
r96sk: Rather unoriginal, though the cast make it more likeable than it would otherwise be.
‘Yes Day’ is exactly what it says on the tin, you will not be shocked to find out what the plot is. It plays out in the most predictable way possible, even the hearty moments are a little too sickly at times. With that sai...
