Snowbaz & Co Barbie Outfits

I was chatting with a few others in discord and we were all in agreement that Simon and Baz would absolutely be going to see Barbie, and would be bringing Mordelia, Petra, and Sophie along.

But what would they wear?

This is how I’ve spent my job hunting free time over the last few weeks.

Pink and nonsense below the cut.

Petra

I feel like she’s a total horse girl. She spends all of her time thinking about horses and drawing horses and riding horses both real and imaginary. When Baz tells her they’re going to dress up for the movie, Petra is ready with her pink accessories to be Equestrian Barbie. There are a few versions of this Barbie, but I wasn’t that into them. Petra can do better. I asked my horse-riding friends how they would Barbie-fy the standard English riding look, and they said pink accessories. So:

Let’s start with our base equestrian look. White top with pink lining on the collar/cuffs, beige or... whatever color that is for the breeches, and field boots (I hear this is what they are called?). Then we add the pink accessories! (Yes, that is a unicorn on the end of that crop). Hot pink breeches optional. I’m foregoing the riding coat because it’s summer and we just don’t need that extra layer, but it does really pull the look together, and I did find a suuuuuper cute pink one. 

I don’t know anything about riding, especially English riding, so don’t come at me if this doesn’t make any sense (I would like to know how you would Barbie-fy your own riding look, though!).

Sophie

Sophie heard “wear pink” and knew just the dress for the occasion. This was the dress she wore for her most recent birthday party (because they totally have super posh, fancy kid birthdays that require nice new dresses, right?). I’m pretty sure the twins are somewhere around 10 now, and this is definitely something I would have worn as a 10 year old.

My inspiration for Sophie’s look was the 2010 Modern Princess Barbie (left) and the 2011 Cut ‘N Style Princess (right).

Mordelia

I imagine Mordelia goes immediately to a retro look. She’s around 15 at this point and could totally be into makeup and fashion. I like to imagine she’s kind of artsy, and while she’s the perfect age to be in her emo phase (which I would love for her to have), I understand this is not a “thing” anymore among the youths. Either way, I like to think Mordelia is a bit of a chameleon and floats around to whatever style inspires her at the moment. (Am I projecting? Yes. Yes, I am.)

I think she would prefer to go for the original 1959 Barbie with the black and white swimsuit (bodysuit?) and sunglasses, but Baz insists on pink (or Simon... yeah... it’s definitely all Simon). So they compromise on a modern take on the Flower Power era of the 60s and 70s. The dress has the large-scale, brightly colored floral print and miniskirt of the 60s with the bell sleeves more common in the 70s. I used this 1969 P.J. Talking doll for inspiration.

She goes all-out on the makeup with the recently revived and renovated mod eye look (top left) and sort of clumped, thick bottom lashes (bottom right) (there’s got to be a better way to describe that....). And the knee-high white boots, of course. She’s really just an amalgamation of all the most fun trends of the 1960s.

Can you tell I had the most fun with this one?

Simon

I had a really hard time with both of the boys. But here we are. As soon as I saw the 1982 Ken Fashion Jeans, I knew that was my inspiration for Simon. It just felt so right. Though I didn’t use the actual jeans part as the inspiration, I did go with another 80s jean staple: acid wash jeans. And imagine the light pink shirt is actually the most obnoxious hot pink you can think of. 

I like to think Simon already had both of these pieces in his closet. Baz will be ensuring those top buttons stay undone all day, as god intended.

Honorable mention to this shirt that also has a Simon-look-alike for a model (tbh I still think maybe I should pick that one every time I look at it) and this basically mesh shirt.

Baz

The one that I’m sure you’ve all been waiting for that I’m also sure is going to disappoint... Baz. Boy did I struggle with Baz. What would he wear? A suit? More casual? More costume-y? Ultimately I decided casual since everyone else would be casual, it’s summer, and, more importantly, I couldn’t find any hot pink floral suits for men.

Once I narrowed it down to casual, I still couldn’t decide. I didn’t even have a good reference for inspiration. Nothing felt quite Baz.  Honestly, I need help.

I think I’ve settled on this large-scale floral print on the top left that feels like a very Barbie-esque print, but it’s not quite right. It for sure needs to be a little less boxy and a little more tailored like the slightly more classic Bazzy floral shirts below. The cherry blossoms (top right) are pretty and pink, but not quite Barbie and not quite Baz. The bottom left seems the most... typical? Not a bad choice (aside from the fact that Baz absolutely would not shop at Target or Walmart where I found this shirt). The bottom right is a little more bold and has the hot pink, but... I’m just not sure. 

And of course we need a good “Baz, you’re wearing jeans!” moment. Why is there a picture of Trent Crimm/James Lance instead of jeans on the left, you ask? When is a photo of Trent Crimm not relevant to Baz? He’s wearing jeans, isn’t he?

Portland Duo SEMUTA Deliver Proggy Sludge Blow in ‘Glacial Erratic’

A couple of dudes in Portland named Ben noodling their way through the end times.

Today, I want to introduce you to a band I'm especially excited about, SEMUTA from Portland, Oregon. I've been following the heavy music landscape for the better part of three decades and have seen a lot of ebbs and flows in the City of Roses, with a lion share of great talent -- from Yob to Witch Mountain to a band called Burials, which many of acolytes of the scene will recognize.

Their debut is the near 40-minute spin Glacial Erratic, and it so deftly weaves post-metal and progressive stylings with sludge that you could even call it beautiful. Not that there isn't plenty of aggression here, as you would expect from the guitarist vocalist Benjamin Caragol, brilliant guitar play and melancholy, nihilistic lyrics. Words are concerned less about He is joined by whirlwind drummer Ben Stoller, who has been in a chain of area bands as well.

The album jumps to a start with swirling riffs on the order of an Elder for "Toeing the Line.". Drums resound deep while a maze of guitar carries us from guttural lows to screeching highs. What floats to the surface over the winding, buzzing fray are melodic verses leading up to melancholy harmonies in the chorus. Easily one of my favorite tracks from the record. Watch the paint dry, stagnant like a light. Bathe in the dying dust, let the bodies rust. There is a wistful middle section that bleeds very nicely into the song's rousing finish.

"A Distant Light" demonstrates the same complex drumming as before, with a nice bouncy beat, mathy rhythms, and some post-jazz touches. Again the vocals are a key ingredient in making this duo work so effectively. Anything grittier might spoil the contrast between bruising low-end and crunchy riffage. The singing is at an ideal range for the style. It just works.

"Glacial Erratic" is, of course, the title track, and the beat says it all with an enticing shuffle between drums and gentle thrusting cymbals. I like that the percussion is not ear-splitting. A great job from all involved in the production. Things intensify with rapid fire poly-rhythms in both instruments, intersected by crystalline intonations. Fans of proggy guitar will appreciate that Caragol doesn't stay in his lane and a nice squak now and again.

I appreciate that the songs on the record have a certain distinction from one another, while remaining true to the band's core sound. "Selective Memory" dashes about like waves against the rocks, with some amazing, perpetual motion guitar play and crashing drumming. Words contemplate the fall of humanity to its continued mistakes, as we forget the past from generation to generation.

As you can tell, there's a lot at play here from concept to execution. "Wounds of Storm" is the closer and the first few minutes are like being frozen in time, floating in dreams. I couldn't help but think of the haunting last track on Mad Season's Above. But that petrays me as a '90s kid. The piece is well constructed and takes its time building. The drums have a booming resonance here, while meeting out a brilliant start-stop rhythm that platforms the verses ideally. The vocals really shine on this one.

SOME BUZZ

Semuta is the duo of guitarist/vocalist Benjamin Caragol and drummer Ben Stoller, former members of noted Rose City bands Burials, Dark Numbers, and more. Together as Semuta, the two summon a mournful strain of sludgy post-metal, marked by enthralling songcraft and passionate execution. Mixed by Scott Evans at Antisleep Audio (Kowloon Walled City, Great Falls) and mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege (Portrayal of Guilt, Torche), debut full-length Glacial Erratic depicts an ocean of melancholy, punctuated by triumphant swells.

Its five songs unfold over the course of 37 minutes, with Caragol's rich, clean vocals soaring over icy lulls and metallic eruptions. Navigating gentle interludes, tense buildups peppered with odd time signatures, and heroic climaxes, Stoller delivers rock-solid beatings in the Bonham tradition and Caragol unfurls a spectrum of six-string magic, all in service of the songs' momentum.

Caragol states: "When I was a kid all I really cared about was metal, but around the time I was 15 or 16 I started to branch out. A big moment for me was seeing Radiohead for the first time. I had never seen a group of musicians so willing to dispense with conventions, and explore such a wide array of sounds. After that I was drawn to heavy bands that experimented with sonics, odd times, and emotive melodies; bands like Neurosis, Converge, Godspeed... I really appreciate music that pushes boundaries while maintaining a lot of feeling. I want the music we make to be ambitious, but I also want it to resonate with people emotionally."

Caragol's goal, to create music that challenges the mind whilst stirring the soul, has been realized with Glacial Erratic, an album likely to hook the ears of any fan of progressive heavy music, from Russian Circles to Cave In and beyond.

Revealing the themes at play behind the new album, Caragol states: "Most of our songs are about the ways in which human systems are failing us. Governments waging endless war. Corporations hoarding wealth and exploiting natural resources at the cost of an inhabitable planet. The abandonment and persecution of our most vulnerable populations. It’s hard to look at our civilization and not see a gaping wound. And most people bury their heads in the gutter of social media and vapid entertainment; a desperate attempt to hold onto fleeting moments of joy as the world around us falls apart."

In contrast to the grave messaging, the official music video for the album's title track sports a lighthearted, B-movie tone. Directed by renowned documentarian of Portland's metal and punk scenes, Shelby Kray, the video sees a party at a backyard skateboard ramp devolve into hallucinatory horror. Making cameos are a bevy of Semuta's hometown friends, including members of Usnea, Dark Castle, Armed for Apocalypse, Stoneburner, Nasalrod, and more. "Portland has a pretty thriving music scene," says Caragol, in regards to the video casting. "There’s a wide variety of bands, and the music community is pretty close knit."

The Glacial Erratic album artwork was created by Ashleigh Caragol, with design and layout by Justin Cory. The album follows one self-titled EP, released by the band in 2020.

my OCs as plants

@ashen-crest tagged me to assign plants to my characters and since plants are a big part of my wip i’m legally obligated to do it :’) i put way too much thought into this exercise because i am nothing if not necessarily extra. forgive the length of this post

Petra: croton petra

i actually didn’t do on purpose to name her after this plant i only realized this was a thing much later :’))) anyways there’s no deep reason why i chose this one for her, i associate her with plants in general, but this one, besides having her name, sort of has her colour scheme, with the deep reds and oranges and greens.

Finn: cactus

(didn’t feel like getting too finicky about the specific type of cactus so have a flowering saguaro)

i chose the cactus because of their ability to survive in rather harsh conditions, and Finn has had quite a lot of things thrown at him throughout his life but he's been incredibly resilient. also, he does come off as a bit prickly at first :’)

Azami: thistle

which is literally what her name means. Azami is the ONLY character in this entire wip whose name i gave more than 10 seconds of thought, and i just thought it would be fitting bc they’re prickly weeds that many people would consider nuisances, which parallels how she is constantly made to feel like she isn’t good enough/doesn’t belong by her family and how people try to control her but she always slips out of their grasp. (i, however, personally think they’re pretty.) i also saw in one (1) site (so i’m unsure of how reliable this may be) that thistles symbolize defiance which is. pretty fitting for her

Val: sunflower

this was a gut choice that is purely based on the fact that i associate Val with the colour yellow and with sunshine :) also apparently they symbolize loyalty.

anyways i guess if anyone else wants to do this exercise feel free to so it & say i tagged you. or not. you don’t have to do anything i say.
