peyote stitch of micah bell's revolver.
also realized this pic doesn't show scale like at all, so oops it's 5 1/4 inch by 2 1/2 (approximately)
these things are a bitch to photograph so under the cut is the pattern I made.

Water ripples box pattern
Now complete! The box form was designed by Julia Pretl, and the water rippling pattern was inspired by some beading patterns I saw on Pinterest, so unfortunately, I can't cite my sources very well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm really eager to receive the rest of the beads for this project; I couldn't find a light enough blue in the shop in town. The beads are estimated to arrive on Friday. I guess I should finish this current one first, but I think I'm getting pretty close.
Edit because I didn't actually say anything about the pattern in this particular post:
You can use any colors you want, but I would recommend a set off the same colors in as close to a gradient as possible. The lightest color in the key corresponds to the lightest color in the pattern and so forth to the darkest color. I'm choosing blue because I would like this to look like plain normal water. But if you chose orange, maybe it's a potion; or if you choose red, maybe it's blood. If you're more patient and clever than me, maybe it's sunset.
Here's an idea of the colors I recommend: DMC 3842 517 3760 518 3761. I only recommend DMC because I have a reference for all the available possible colors. I know DMC is used for embroidery thread and diamond painting. I think seed beads should switch their color labels.

how did you get into making kandi? it looks cool & i want to try but idk where to start
honestly my best advice is to just jump into it. the supplies i find best for beginners and bascially what i use is:
-standard size pony beads (beadtin.com has the best prices if you’re making a large order or need a lot of a specific color but they’re easy enough to find as it is, dollar tree has some, not of great quality, but its how i started out.)
-cloth covered elastic stretch cord, i use 1mm. as tempting as it is, avoid ‘stretch magic’ or other clear stretch cords or uncovered elastic, the first dry rots over time and the second snaps easily. i know its annoying that it’s not clear but your peices will benefit from it. alternatively, if you are making a mask or bikini or a strap for a bag or something else that does not need to stretch, use fishing line, it’s very strong and stiff so it will make your rows look way neater and not get stretched out with wear. (again, only do this with peices that do not need to be stretched, if you use fishing line on a cuff you will regret it)
-yarn needle (plastic or metal, i use a metal one. make sure its small enough to fit through beads but large enough to be able to fit your cord.) you dont technically have to use one but it is a lot easier when you’re doing stitches
- scissors + a lighter for burning ends if needed
and then it’s youtube tutorials.. theres just about everything you need on there but i reccomend learning the peyote (odd and even variations), x-base and multistitch stitches. more complex tutorials expect you to know how to do those stitches so they’re a good place to start.
while all of these stitches are very versitile, x-base is most commonly used as the base for 3d cuffs. peyote is often used for making flat panels seen in purses and bikinis, and multistitch is often used to make cuffs. kandipatterns.com has a ton of free to use patterns for peyote and multistitch, though it took me forever to learn how to read a pattern effectively. there are more stitches ofc but those are the ones you see most. good luck and have fun!
i personally got into it in highschool, around the beginning of my sophmore year? my early cuffs were not great quality, but it’s cool to see how i’ve grown since then!
kandi is a community that is extremely friendly and encouraging to beginners and theres guides and tutorials for just about everything, and plenty of people willing to answer questions.

Here’s the finished blue and red hearts bracelet. This one kicked my butt because I decided to make them cut out which is very difficult in a peyote stitch. The purchasable pattern has a straight cuff edge, I was just trying to be fancy.

Hi salem :3 how does one go abt making Kandi (like what do I buy/how do I do it)
OKAY preemptively putting this under a readmore. BUT
so all you really need is pony beads and string. i personally recommend a cloth-wrapped elastic string because they're easy to tie + hard to break but basically anything stretchy will work. the absolute most basic and beginner-friendly kandi you can make is a single- just put enough beads on the string to fit around your wrist/ankle/neck [depending on where you want to wear it] and tie it off, and bam. you have made kandi. singles are a good way to get used to the very basics of making kandi, and if just pony beads feels a little boring you can add letter beads to spell stuff out, or charms to add a little bit of extra decoration! here's some examples of singles ive made btw i will take any chance to show off my kandi
Tumblr media
probably about a step up from that is kandi stars which i will be using this pinterest tutorial to show you how to do because i cannot figure out how to describe that in a way that makes sense
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i make them to take to concerts and give to people its super fun :3 you can also thread one of the beads on the tip of the points into a kandi single to attach it! its a little clunky but i personally think clunky charms are fun. i cant find a picture of it rn but i saw someone once with a kandi single that said "whip it good" with an empty can of whipits attached to it and while that is honestly one of the very few drugs i do not condone i still think that was cute as fuck
once youve gotten comfortable with those, you can move on to making cuffs! [or start making cuffs immediately honestly because that's how i started but honestly i would recommend you not do that because it took me five tries to make a single cuff.] there are two common stitches for cuffs- peyote stitch [make a loop and then go back around putting a bead on the string, skipping over a bead, and then sticking the thread back in so that the two beads stick on top of each other], which is less flexible but easier to make more detailed patterns in, and x stitch [basically the same as kandi stars but bigger and taller, making a kind of x-shaped look], which is more flexible and better for the base of big complicated cuffs. the easiest, though, is a ladder cuff. i would show you abother pinterest tutorial for this one but i couldn't find one. but the tl;dr is that you make a row of beads and then stick the thread in from both sides. and then do it a bunch so it stacks
Tumblr media Tumblr media
here's some video tutorials for peyote stitch & x stitch
anything more complicated than that i cannot help you with but 1. this is a good start 2. youtube has tutorials for everything
glhf!!!!!!!!!!! 💛💛💛💛

A Diné (Navajo) friend of mine made and designed the heirloom corn on the right. The pattern she uses (a doubled up decreasing peyote stitch) is absolute hell in size 18. 😂
Modern high quality beads are consistent in shape and size. 18s were never machine-made, they’re just all over the place in size and shape. During peyote stitch, I had to select each bead according to size and shape. It’s something you never have to do with modern Japanese or Czech beads.

This size/scale earring works best with SD ball-jointed doll sizes. But, I mean, there are no rules when it comes to jewelry and accessories.
I intend to sell these via my instagram tomorrow! But, gosh, I’ve been struggling this week and I have an order of beads that have been stuck in customs since March 7th. 😭 I was counting on those colours!

I've learned recently that the real reason nobody has a nice radiation symbol pattern is that it's just too even. I sorta made it work though.
In theory you could add a row of clear beads to one end & problem solved, but then it might look a bit strange... ah well. Some things just aren't meant to (nicely) be.

brick stitch version of my pattern since i drew on the other one. can just rotate the image for peyote lol, not much difference
13x13, used about ... 4ft of string i believe? Didn't count the beads. Could probably use a touch less string.

Been a while since I’ve done some bead art. Decided to make The Wall symbol.
For the pattern click read more. Note though that some of the colors were changed while making it.
Black = brown/dark red
Gray = transparent
White dot with color around it = white beads (for a highlight effect. Optional)

For your tarot tapestry, was it knitting? Needle point? Crocheting? I’ve been eager for a new medium for my own creative projects so I’m curious as to what you used etc!!
the 1634 sun card one? it was crochet!! (i'd love to learn knitting or embroidery at some point tbh) i just used single crochets for the whole thing and this website called stitchfiddle which lets you import photos into patterns and then will even select the colors for you if you have a popular yarn brand. if you look at the full post here, i kind of detail more specifically under the read more.
i'm in the same boat tbh!!! i did that last fall after learning to crochet earlier in the year and then learned cross stitch this winter and did a portrait of auston, and now i'm like.... i want to make MORE hockey tarot themed stuff so i'm teaching myself peyote beading and going to do a little 7in by 13in beadwork tapestry for a mitch as the magician card i designed. ANYWAY sorry to rant but happy creating!!! you should totally share you're work if you end up making something :')

I haven't used tumblr in ages so I'm gonna use it to document my beading progress (or lack there of?)
anyway I found some seed beads on sale the other day so I bought them and some other beading supplies, I'm waiting forbthem to get here but the hyper fixation is too strong so I'm learning the stitches with my pearler beads
this is a peyote stitch and a brick stitch practice (brick stitch was also increasing and decreasing)
Tumblr media
and this is following a pattern from pinterest to get used to doing that and just practice
