Draupadī and the Dharma of Women
"Strī" translates from Sanskrit as "woman", while "dharma" is a complex principle with manifold meanings, in this context bearing the significance of "duty"; in simple terms, it refers to an individual conduct that contributes to harmony in a greater framework, be it societal or cosmological.
Draupadī is lauded in the Critical Edition of the Mbh several times as being the epitome of strī-dharma, of the dharma of women. (2.62.20; 2.63.25-30; 2.64). Interestingly, she is most intensely praised as such after she angrily (yet elegantly!) questions the men of the royal court and demands justice, being anything but meek and demure. I would argue that this showcases that in the Mahābhārata voicing oneself and standing up for oneself are considered responsibilities belonging to the dharma of women.
To nuance this even more, Eknath Easwaran, an eminent translator of the Bhagavadgītā, highlights that, etymologically, the term "dharma" can be traced back to the root 'dhri', which means 'to support, hold up, or bear'; "dharma" therefore translates as "that which supports", and Draupadī's conduct therefore supports both society and cosmology.
In the Sanskrit Mbh, Kṛṣṇa does not appear in the sabhā (royal hall) at the time of Draupadī's attempted disrobing, and no direct mention of him is made during this episode. In a conversation with Dr. Brian Black, a Mbh researcher whom I had the honour to have as my MA supervisor, we talked about the implication of this, which is that Draupadī's adherence to strī-dharma appears to be that which shields her. A question that could arise here could be whether there is a contradiction between the Critical Edition and modern renderings of the Mahābhārata, with Draupadī being shielded by her dharma as opposed to by Kṛṣṇa.
For me there is no contradiction.
Kṛṣṇa in the Bhagavadgītā establishes himself as 'the eternal dharma' (14.27); and so, Kṛṣṇa is all dharmas, including strī-dharma. We tend to associate Kṛṣṇa with a fully-fledged incarnation; but he is beyond that. I would maintain that, as the divine principle, he exists in Draupadī's consciousness and in her actions as dharma (and not only!). The latter renditions, for me, in which he is physically there, only bring forth in tangible projections the internal process extending Draupadī's consciousness.

Confessions of a Chaotic PhD student✨
Tumblr media
I am here to make a 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻:
to feel comfortable as my true self and also to let people know that they're not alone.
I have always tried to show here the struggles and confusions I'm facing as a PhD student. I talk about my failures, my struggles with perfectionism, and the ups and downs of my PhD. But I feared that, without realising, I've given a picture of myself as a very organized PhD student who has everything under control. So this post is to come clean.
💬 𝗜 𝗮𝗺 𝗳𝗮𝗿 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱. 𝗠𝘆 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗼 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰. 𝗜 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗹𝘆. 𝗜 𝗮𝗺 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆. 𝗜 𝗴𝗼 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸.
But the one thing I do is, I give myself time. I sit with myself to untangle the messy things: be it thoughts or schedules or cupboards. I pause and take time to untangle the chaos and bring some order. And 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵, I am able to be organized.
I am also slow, in that respect. I take a lot of time to find the best way something works for me. I experiment so many apps, I seek and try so many tools/processes and change through so many plans before I find the one that works for now.
All these processes are messy, nonlinear - that's how they work. Only after I give myself the time to go through the messy am I able to feel the calm.
❓I was worried that if I share all these processes with you, wouldn't I be confusing you? What if I use one method this month and soon I find something better? So should I share only the things, I know for *sure*, that work?
💡But then I realized, this page is my *𝙥𝙚𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙚𝙫𝙚* - where I store 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘳𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘮𝘺 𝘗𝘩𝘋 for me and for you to see. I HAVE TO show the process, not just the end product.
I realized, you guys know that!
By sharing the process, I am sharing the reality. And only by sharing reality will I be able to form authentic connections ♥️
That's it. Just putting it out here.
So I hope to be more *real* and let's all be imperfect together in this weird journey of a lifetime!

Greetings, Scholars!
After our initial introduction, it's time to dive into the heart of our journey - the essential readings. The sequence of our reading will not necessarily follow the order in which the books are listed. Depending on our discussions, current political events, or requests, we might jump around the list. Flexibility will keep our exploration fresh and relevant.
So, let's embark on this intellectual adventure! It's time to dig into these fascinating texts and unravel the complex, dynamic world of American politics. Here's to a journey full of discovery, debate, and deep insights!
Happy Reading,
The Capitol Scholar

Okay I know no one literally gives a damn about how I feel about tay tay but it's just she is such an incredible singer, songwriter, producer, actress, philanthropist etc. Someone who is so badass and has been a part of my life since I was 12. One random summer day, I saw this curly haired blonde bangs girl on stage at my tv screen, holding a red guitar in her hands and wearing those high waisted shorts. Went straight to my mom and said, "I want to meet her. She sounds so cool mom!" Have seen her transition from country to pop to alt to folk and the woman nailed them all. It's not even my graduation but I feel so proud to see her today at NYU graduation ceremony. The speech was incredible! I'm just gonna shut up now... Bye (◍•ᴗ•◍) @taylorswift
