In 1919(?), Buck Rogers, a twenty-year-old pilot fresh out of World War I took a new job surveying the lower levels of a mine near Pittsburgh. While on the job examining a part of the cave that was showing peculiar properties he got trapped by a cave collapse that also caused a strange chemical reaction and placed him in suspended animation till 2429. (Buck Rogers, Original News Strip)

Replay – MOVIE SERIALS – ALL IN BLACK & WHITE FOR A DIME!
Replay – MOVIE SERIALS – ALL IN BLACK & WHITE FOR A DIME!
Figure 1 – Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow! As I sit here tonight it’s snowing up a treat (if you like that kind of thing) in Vancouver, BC, whose weather is usually about the same as San Francisco; i.e., seldom snowy, often wet and/or gloomy, but sometimes gloriously warm and sunny, even in autumn. Figure 1 is the view out my front door tonight (Wednesday, November 29); what looks like a…

Here it is, the RPG no one asked for: Buck Rogers XXVc (1990). If you’ve read about TSR’s largely idiotic history, you probably know at least some of the back story. The woman who ousted Gygax was the granddaughter of John F. Dille, the publisher of the Buck Rogers comic strip (not even the damn creator, Philip Francis Nowlan, just the guy who owned the strips), and in some egregious self-dealing, she had TSR develop a board game (1988) and this RPG out of the IP. She initially stuck her brother, Flint Dille, on it (he who was responsible for the Dragonstrike video and all those D&D products with audio CDs inside), but he couldn’t deliver, so it fell to more capable hands.
Again, no one wanted this. The main touchstone for Buck at that point was the corny two-season TV series (1979), and that was primarily a cheap knock-off of Star Wars. But the boss wants what the boss wants (I should note, however, that the popular theory that Star Frontiers was killed so that Buck could live doesn’t hold water — the dates don’t line up). The thing is, though — being unwanted doesn’t mean bad. Buck Roger XXVc…is not bad. Believe it or not.
It’s basically 2E D&D with a sci-fi skin. It isn’t elegant and there is no thematic unity between the setting and the mechanics and the ranged combat is a mess, but it hangs together all right. And there is a lot of fantastic setting stuff in here, supported by excellent art (the art is legit far better than your average 2E Forgotten Realms book). Hostile AI’s, billionaire’s downloading their consciousnesses, evil megacorporations, corrupt governments, freedom fighters, pirates. There’s a lot of good stuff that was basically smothered at birth because it was Buck Rogers and no one cared.
What I’m saying is that maybe we should be so quick to dismiss a game designed by Mike Pondsmith, even if it was for a DOA property.

So was anyone actually going to tell me that Buck Rogers already IS Public Domain, or did you all wait for me to look up which stories will enter the next year and discover that it doesn't really matter?
So apparently 1) Buck Rogers first appeared in 1928, not 1929, meaning that first short story would be out of copyright anyway, but also 2) the copyright on that one was never renewed, so it has been Public Domain since 1957. Finally, 3) the author, Philip Francis Nowlan died in 1940, so in countries where it is life of the author +70 years, the copyright expired in 2010. Finally, 4) despite all of this, there still was somehow a court case about film rights in 2016. The judge refused to rule because the movie in question wasn't far enough developed.
And I was looking forward to throwing a party next year. Seems I was too late.

The characters and concept that became Buck Rogers first appeared in a novella by Philip Francis Nowlan titled Armageddon 2419 A.D. (Amazing Stories, 1928). It was soon followed by a sequel novella called The Airlords of Han, both of which were collected into one paperback in the 1960s. A separate Buck Rogers comic strip (started in 1929 and running through 1967) quickly diverged from the warlike novellas and focused more on sci-fi adventure and romance. In 1934, the Flash Gordon comic strip began competing with Buck Rogers. Neither are a flash in the pan… on Sci-Fi Saturday!!

In 1987, Buck Rogers, a brash astronaut, was on a space flight in a shuttle when a meteor shower nocked him off course and he went into suspended animation to wake up in the year 2491. ("Awakening", Buck Rogers, TV)

Well, these are cool! Six cut out figures from the Buck Rogers comic strip. The artist is likely Philip Francis Nowlan who created the strip. And as a bonus - a Buck Rogers Rubber Band Gun!

Heritage Auctions Teams with Comic Artists to Benefit the Ed Asner Memorial Fund #ComicArt #Charity
Heritage Auctions and numerous comic artists are teaming up to raise money of the Ed Asner Memorial Fund. Bill Sienkiewicz is one of those creators who after getting involved, helped convince other artists to do the same. Beloved for generations for roles that included gruff-but-lovable Lou Grant on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Santa Claus in Elf and Carl Fredericksen in Pixar’s Up, Ed Asner died…
