Atlanta Wedding Photographer Gets Married!

I am very excited to share this week’s blog post. I have known this couple for years now and just love them!  They are Joe and Tara from the Atlanta Artistic Wedding team!

Let’s start with a little history.  I first met Tara when she took some photography classes with me at Emory and was one of the best students I ever had.  She was very creative and driven. When I gave out an assignment she went over and beyond.  She has a very unique approach to photography and best of all for wedding photography she is great with people.  

After the classes were finished I asked Tara to start shooting weddings with me.  It is one of the best decisions I have ever made.  She has shot close to 100 weddings with me.  She does not shoot like me and that is why I like working with her.  She brings her own style.  When we shoot together the client gets a variety of shots with unique perspectives.

About a year ago Tara let me know that she and Joe were engaged!  I was really happy for them.  I have met Joe on many occasions and they make a great couple.  She told me they were having a destination wedding in the Caribbean at one of their favorite vacation spots but they wanted to have the wedding certificate in the U.S., and were planning on having a courthouse wedding before the formal wedding on the island with their friends and family.  She asked me if I would take a few photos at their courthouse wedding and I said “of course!”.  I was so honored and thrilled.  She told me they were getting married at the Fulton County Courthouse in February and I met them there. It was raining and security would not let me inside to take photos so I waited outside for them.  When they came out they were so excited!  I took a few photos of them outside the courthouse and backlit them with my flash.  The results reflected their fun and adventurous personalities.

If you were worrying about them not having a beautiful wedding,  I have enclosed a photo Tara sent me from her wedding on the island.  As you can see it was absolutely breathtaking and much better weather!

I wanna talk about Blindings because I love stories that use fauna (and flora) to flesh out and reinforce their worldbuilding. Having the Blinding be a central focus in episode one was part of what assured me that the story and setting of Midst would be for me.

In particular, the Blinding’s bioluminescence is a fantastic bit of worldbuilding. At first, I was like, “oh! it’s got echolocation but with lights, that’s so neat!” And it is!

But then I thought about the mechanics a little bit more and realized that an organ that perceives light and sends information about how light reflects off of the environment to a brain is just… eyeballs. Blindings just made eyeballs again but more convoluted and less efficient. Odd that they don’t just glow all the time, but maybe there’s a reason their bodies don’t want to put energy towards that, maybe it’s just cool. idk but yeah. sure. what if eyes but echolocation. I’m here for that.

And then as the series progresses, we learn more and more how the Fold works, and though no one’s really talked about Blindings since episode one, if you think about them again with the information that steady light in the Fold attracts tearrors, it suddenly makes sense why they have ‘photolocation’ instead of… flashlight appendages or something. And the awesome, dangerous predator gets even cooler because it was telling us about the world the whole time AHHHHHHH

Atlanta Wedding Photographer Shoots at Night

Atlanta Wedding photographers master the light

As an Atlanta wedding photographer I think the most rewarding and challenging wedding photography is shooting at night.  You have to be very aware of the ambient light and know how to bring light to a bride or couple.  

blue hour = dramatic wedding photographs

When I mentioned ambient light that means the existing light.  The existing light can be the light from the room, dj’s lights, or the night sky.  My favorite kind of night sky is the blue hour. It happens about 20 minutes after sunset.  You have to time it perfectly. When you have timed it just right you can have some dramatic results.  You can see that I do that often during my weddings.  You just set up the lights and tap the couple on the shoulder and they step outside for 3 minutes and they have a beautiful dramatic portrait.  

Fox theatre

Recently I had the honor of shooting at one of my favorite places in Atlanta, the Fox Theatre.  The Fox is a landmark of Atlanta and brings its own charm to your wedding.  You have so many beautiful backdrops to choose from there.  The Fox is so rich in historic details.  On this particular wedding they did not have a show going on, so the stage was empty.  I took advantage of this and made the couple the stars of the show.  I mixed the ambient light of the stage and a second flash to capture the couple’s personality and  love of dance.

Wedding Exit

The night shot that I do at almost every wedding is the exit.  The exit can be a real challenge.  You are dealing with a couple in a hurry to get to their honeymoon and excited guests!  The best way I have come up with is to use two people.  I shoot the couple from the front and I have a second person with a flash following the couple from behind. The two flashes go off at the same time and give some great results that make the photo really pop!
