Lockdown struggles. . I started the day visualising the planche progression workout I was going to have later on and I was feeling good. You know when you think, “yeah, I can do this. It’s gonna be great.” Then, after a full days work and the inevitable barrage of distractions that accompany a family of four living under extended lockdown conditions, my head was a garbled mess. . I’ve found I really need a clear head when training mentally demanding skills like the planche. Music often helps me focus, but it wasn’t doing enough this time around. After reaching peak frustration, I switched to reps and sets so that I could get some benefit from the workout. . Kicking off the week with a planche power workout focusing on bent-arm strength gains. . As with most workouts, I perform the more taxing exercises earlier on in the session with around 2 minutes rest in-between sets. Rest times shorten as the exercises take less of a toll on my central nervous system - note that I still go to failure on most sets so the intensity is still high. . I like to superset exercises that are more isolation movements in order to save time as in the last two in this workout. . 💪🏻 Handstand push-ups on bars /dumbbells (elbows tight) 💪🏻 Handstand push-ups on floor (elbows at 45-degrees) 💪🏻 Deficit pike push-ups 💪🏻 Pseudo planche push-ups 💪🏻 Reverse hyperextensions superset with 💪🏻 One-arm scapula push-ups . Back to the grind! . 2 weeks on from my hamstring tear and things are healing up well. After a brief break from training over Christmas, I went back to planche training. Nearly a week since my last strength session, but straight back into it with a planche progression workout. . In this session, I noticed that during my straddle planche hold my biceps felt like they were reaching their limit before anything else. Friday’s bent-arm planche session almost didn’t happen. . I was already feeling a bit ropey and run down and my entire morning had been spent in a very long meeting after which the thought of not going to the gym crossed my mind. The same thought quickly left my mind as after all morning stuck in a meeting, the gym was exactly what I needed! . Some people actively look to reduce the amount of time they spend in the gym and I can appreciate that, but my workouts are my meditation. They’re my opportunity to spend time focused on me, to allow my body to move as it was designed to do and my opportunity to reinforce my mind to movement connection. . A couple of notes from this session: . 📝 Transitioning from V-sit to tuck planche (push-up) was made more interesting with straight legs as it encouraged me to protract maximally in order to get my legs through. Some compression strength also helped with this. 📝 I’ve come to rely on the momentum from a V-sit to propel me into a straddle planche position. Nice straight-arm planche workout today. . The L-sit (or V-sit which I'm working on) to planche variation is one of my favourite exercises as it packs in so much and is quite versatile. You can even mechanically drop it quite easily if you so wish. It can be done in both a very deliberate and controlled manner in order to build strength or you can add in some momentum to help get you into more advanced positions such as the V-sit or straddle planche. . Today, I added some tweaks to the move by pushing my legs out slightly from the advanced tuck which allowed me to counterbalance by leaning further forward and also holding the return V-sit position for a split-second to work on my compression. . Perhaps my best form straddle planche to date! . Last week, I swapped out my Thursday yoga session to bring forward my bent-arm planche workout and fit in another calisthenics workout. By Thursday this week, I was more than ready for an active rest day so yoga was back on. . This set me up nicely for a bent-arm planche progression workout to close out the week. .
