“A TRIBUTE TO TROOPER R.” A neighbor’s playful Golden that I got to know very well, recently crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Why 3 tennis balls? Trooper lived to chase tennis balls. He preferred to not give them back though. He would hold them in his mouth and wait for you to throw another. If you wanted to play, you had to have at least 3 tennis balls. He could only hold two in his mouth, so he’d have to drop one to chase the third. Thanks for the memories, Trooper! “FORT GORGES” Located on Hog Island, this fort was built (1858-1865)!to protect the NE approaches to Portland (ME) harbor. However, the Civil War ended before the construct was completed so no battles were fought there and no troops errr ever stationed there. It is named after the colonial proprietor of Maine, Sir Fernando Gorges, it is modeled after Ft. Summer in Charleston. “WESTERN CEMETERY” Located at the Western Promenade in Portland (ME) in the West End neighborhood, this place has been a burying ground since the 1700s. At one time, home for the “poor and indigent”, it also contains the “Old Catholic Ground”, an area for Irish Catholic immigrants who fled the Potato Famine in the mid-1800s. The parents and brother of Portland’s Henry Wadsworth Longfellow are buried here. Before the “New Normal” I would have spent Sunday morning with sketching friends AT this location. “NOT AT THE PORTLAND OBSERVATORY” This 1807 structure, was built on a high point in the city, and was itself the height of a 7-story building. It was operated to observe approaching ships to advise particular merchants when THEIR ship was sighted. The merchants flag would then be hoisted as notification.
