Writing Exercise: Plotting Together
This cue card exercise is perfect for those that have trouble with plot, and mapping it out. With this exercise, I wanted to pair it down as much as I can without losing too much context. Yet, I couldn’t help myself in losing track of my thoughts a little. First, write your details for the following: Choose a Character Choose a Setting Choose an “Opposition” Character Choose a…

In fiction there are two types of sinister schemes and heroic plans that succeed, and two types that fail.
Succeed:
🐭 schemes and plans that work because they are genuinely clever, meticulous, and well thought out.
🐭 schemes and plans that work not because they are as clever as their schemer thinks, but I am the author and I chose not to have any of the many possible things that could go wrong with the plan go wrong.
Fail:
🐭 schemes and plans that fail because they are not as clever as their schemer thinks and something obvious goes wrong.
🐭 schemes and plans that are genuinely clever, meticulous and well thought out, but I am the author and I chose to have something that no possible planner could have predicted go wrong at the worst possible moment.

This just inspired tf out of me
Silco probably adopts Viktor maybe a little bit before Felisha got pregnant (he's the same age as he was in that one flashback we go in season one). It was less so an adoption and more so him giving Viktor mini jobs to do so he isn’t just on his own all the time. Anyway, the main plot idea I have for this AU.
Jayce goes to Zaun looking for some things for hextech that can’t be found in Piltover and then meets Viktor that way, and I assume Viktor already got his hands on some of the hextech gems that Jinx stole, and so Viktor already knows half of it, but Jayce, being the trusting person he is, fills Viktor in on the rest of hextech that he didn’t know about, and they partner up again. Jayce continues his "work" in the lab. In Piltover, but actually doing most of the research with Viktor in his lab down in Zaun. Oh, it's all coming together, and then Heimerdinger starts to get suspicious about how Jayce's lab is almost barren (with Jayce taking most of the tools needed down to Viktor). And how he's almost never in the lab doing work, but Heimerdinger knows better than to think Jayce is slacking off. So he follows Jayce down to see what he's doing, but while doing that, he gets sidetracked and sees the poor living conditions of the people of Zaun and basically segues into Heimerdinger's storyline of episode 8, season 1, back to Jayce and Viktor the whole time they're working. Jayce will ask questions about Viktor's life. And in doing so he'll hear little bits about the culture in Zaun, and over time he'll realise all the lies he was told about Zaun. And Will brings the new beliefs of "Hey, I think poor people kinda do deserve rights." And Mel sees this change and just like Heimerdinger gets suspicious. As it's almost out of nowhere, and that's all I got right now
Okay let me add my five cents to the Zaunite au, where Viktor didn’t make it to the academy and remained in Zaun.
He was trying to invent on his own, but he desperately needed money for his research. And that’s when Silco appeared…

Honestly, I love it when characters relapse. When someone who’s gotten over their anger issues falls into a situation so out of their depth they fall back on their old habits. When someone who’s learned to open up becomes a recluse again in order to cope with something outside their control.
There’s just something so horrible, so toxic, about watching a character grow and then slip back into their old selves in order to cope, bc you know they still care, that they’re the same inside, but watching them hurt so hard they don’t know what else to do brings a sense of catharsis.
#writeblr#writing#writers on tumblr#writing community#creative writing#my writing#fanfic#fanfiction#one of those tropes that has to be played carefully tho#it’s important to show them wresting with it#and realizing what they’re doing#but being so lost in their pain they don’t know what to do#show they’re contrary feelings and that they’re still the same inside#it’s just a defense mechanism#also don’t make it seem like a flick of a switch#a slow process of relapse and a slow process of recovery from it is also important#not a plot twist for the sake of it#or played for drama#but a legitimate change with real consequences#just yappin#writing prompts#writing tropes#writing stuff#writing characters#characters#character arcs#oc stuff#tropes#trope talk

I've had this little idea in my head for a while now, so I decided to sit down and plot it out.
Disclaimer: This isn't meant to be some sort of One-Worksheet-Fits-All situation. This is meant to be a visual representation of some type of story planning you could be doing in order to develop a plot!
Lay down groundwork! (Backstory integral to the beginning of your story.) Build hinges. (Events that hinge on other events and fall down like dominoes) Suspend structures. (Withhold just enough information to make the reader curious, and keep them guessing.)
And hey, is this helps... maybe sit down and write a story! :)

my favorite scene in all of literature is when Neil Josten wakes up in Columbia after being drugged, hurls an alarm clock at Aaron, dumps his water on the floor and throws the cup at Aaron, stuff his clothes down the toilet and squeezes out through the window, has the foresight to call Matt from a pay phone to protect his shit, hitch hikes back to campus, eyes back to brown?? shows up on Wymack’s door like 😜 and reveals he could speak German the whole time?? CHARACTER OF ALL TIME, that is a protagonist who knows how MOVE THE MFING PLOT ALONG
#My dad always told me one of the most important things about writing#Is that your protagonist needs to be the one driving the plot lol#like Neil really mfing does that#He gets the plot moving and when it does it HAULS ASS#One of the most beautiful things about tfc#Is that Nora creates the most insane world and as a reader your like??😂 wtf#But then she writes a character who is perfectly suited to deal with that insane world#it’s so endlessly satisfying to read. All the characters speak other languages perfectly for some reason? No worries.#so does Neil. They like fight with knives and love to slam each other into walls? NO WORRIES#so does Neil#Bitch and he’s 5’3???? MY MAN#Novel of all time#protagonist of all time#Solidified its place in the canon of great literature#nora sakavic#all for the game#aftg#the foxhole court#tfc#neil josten

Tips from a Beta Reading Writer
This one's for the scenes with multiple characters, and you're not sure how to keep everyone involved.
Writing group scenes is chaos. Someone’s talking, someone’s interrupting, someone’s zoning out thinking about breadsticks. And if you’re not careful, half your cast fades into the background like NPCs in a video game. I used to struggle with this so much—my characters would just exist in the scene without actually affecting it. But here’s what I've learned and have started implementing:
✨ Give everyone a job in the scene ✨
Not their literal job—like, not everyone needs to be solving a crime or casting spells. I mean: Why are they in this moment? What’s their role in the conversation?
My favourite examples are:
The Driver: Moves the convo forward. They have an agenda, they’re pushing the action.
The Instigator: Pokes the bear. Asks the messy questions. Stirring the pot like a chef on a mission.
The Voice of Reason: "Guys, maybe we don’t commit arson today?"
The Distracted One: Completely in their own world. Tuning out, doodling on a napkin, thinking about their ex.
The Observer: Not saying much, but noticing everything. (Quiet characters still have presence!)
The Wild Card: Who knows what they’ll do? Certainly not them. Probably about to make things worse.
If a character has no function, they’ll disappear. Give them something—even if it’s just a side comment, a reaction, or stealing fries off someone’s plate. Keep them interesting, and your readers will stay interested too.
