Margo got to meet the puppies the other day! I’m mostly keeping the big dogs separate until the babies are a bit bigger, but Margo has a good track record and wanted to see them. I was a little nervous about her body language at first but then she did her “come play” spins lol

i'm literally constantly thinking about this tbh. bathrooms are really interesting spaces sociologically because having indoor plumbing and the ability to piss and shit inside your home is considered as a mark of cultural gentility and the 'civilising process,' even as pissing and shitting themselves are made increasingly taboo and relegated to the margins of polite society. like, think about how often people fuck onscreen, versus how many times you've seen someone shitting into a toilet (and of those, how many weren't played for laughs).

succession has ~30 scenes/character beats set in bathrooms (there are some ambiguous cases). bathrooms convey a few different things across these scenes, but one recurring theme is that, as the designated sites for excrement and physical waste, bathrooms are often also where the characters go to discuss 'filthy,' taboo topics, or to conduct business that can't be done in the open (think roman jacking off, kendall doing coke, roman talking to asgarov, greg rehearsing his congressional testimony, etc).

at the same time, bathrooms are also where characters go to cleanse themselves, physically and metaphysically: logan rinsing piss off himself, roman literally washing his hands of the rocket launch, kendall bathing after he kills the waiter, etc. bathrooms are both the receptacles for waste and the place where one goes to purify and cleanse oneself.

this makes the bathroom the perfect setting for roman's conversation with mencken. as roman puts it earlier in the episode, they're "a couple of cool guys having some disgusting fun." at the same time, roman is also trying to verify that mencken is acceptable enough to mainstream society for atn to endorse him. arguing over the respectability of fascism, roman and mencken are really hashing out political and cultural boundaries: what they can say in the open, who's included in civil society, "who gets to join," as roman puts it. he brings mencken to the bathroom to discuss an ideology he fears might be too poisonous to cop to publicly, then leaves having been reassured that it's actually 'clean' enough for waystar to ally with.

i think this tension is also reflected in the interior design of this particular bathroom. lots of bathroom scenes on succession are kinda gross and grimy-looking, for obvious reasons (think roman and matsson at kenfest, kendall and stewy in the coffeeshop bathroom, etc). in "what it takes", on the other hand, the bathroom is in a posh hotel room, with lots of gold, glass, and marble (?) sinks. it's the perfect setting for what roman is doing: trying to rehabilitate a politics of extermination and white supremacy into an acceptably pretty, slick spectacle that his family can sell on tv.

i am so powerful i installed 3 new shower liners on our shitty clawfoot tub shower rod ring thing even with my fucked up collar bone AND we now have a pulldown shower head so i can rinse the tub 😭

Well, let’s move up to floor two -- after a quick close-up of Victor’s cauldron and Smiler’s Tetris-frogs display (Frogtris?), that is. Up there we have:

-->More rugs, as promised! Smiler’s party room got a nice complement of rugs (actually, three of those are one item from the Toddler Stuff pack! The trio came in so many fun colors I had to use them; the fourth rug is one I was gonna put in their room before I found one with a swatch I liked better); the upstairs landing got TWO colorful rugs; and both bedrooms got under-the-desk rugs. Rugs everywhere!

-->More pet stuff as well -- cat tree in the corner there, another litter box outside the two bathrooms, and a trio of pet beds -- two in Victor and Alice’s room, one just outside Smiler’s bedroom (I was gonna put it inside, but rearranging everything in there made it so it didn’t fit).

-->Smiler’s former party room is now Victor’s seance room! Complete with bat wallpaper and the bat-winged ceiling fan from @the-crypt-o-club‘s 2020 Simblreen pack, Creepy Creations (also the source of Smiler’s yellow-and-black striped suit!) I initially wasn’t sure what to put in it besides the seance table itself, but then I figured it could be used as a display for some of the magical items Victor’s picked up -- hence the spare broom on the wall, and all those familiar orbs he isn’t using in the curio. Also put Alice’s collected crystals in here, and the bizarre idol for safekeeping. Still felt like the room needed a bit more purpose to it, though, so I threw in a rocking chair and a meditation stool. *shrug* It’s a bit slapdash at the moment, but it does the job!

-->As stated previously, I redid all the bathrooms! Mostly because I was looking at the furnishings already in there and realizing a couple of them were listed as “Uncomfortable.” Now that won’t do! So both now have better toilets; proper counter sinks with soap dishes and toothbrush cups; and nicer mirrors and a bit of Plumbella’s artwork. I also gave Victor and Alice’s bathroom a nicer shower, and Smiler a nicer tub. It’s basically all just nicer, okay?

-->Moved around some paintings and collectibles and suchlike -- all of Victor’s little statues are now on the shelf he built in Granite Falls (painted white), and their collection of fossils on Smiler’s suitcase shelves (also from Cepzid’s “Arcade Stuff) -- Victor recently got a raptor claw. :D

-->Victor and Alice’s room got a touch of a makeover, with me using all the slots on their new Ivybell desk to put in some more decorations. Like a nice snowglobe, the Dragon Dragonfly Victor caught in Granite Falls, and A DIGITALISTIC SKETCHPAD BECAUSE I KEEP MEANING TO GIVE VICTOR ONE. *sigh* I have so many things I keep meaning to do with this lot and I just FORGET. . .

-->Speaking of which, Smiler’s room got a BIG makeover, mostly because I went “hey, yeah, wasn’t I going to have them do videos online?” and started looking to see if I could fit the video production station in there. Turns out I could! And that led to them getting a desk upgrade in the other corner, and rearranging all their collectibles a bit (including putting the space rock and Hoppy the MySim in their room), and getting a new smaller dresser, and -- a lot happened here to fit in the new video station! But it’s here, and Smiler is ready to make video content.

And that’s basically all the most important stuff! Like I said, things may still change in the house, but I’m pretty happy with this for now. :) Next time, we catch up with the actual SIMS again as they get used to the new digs and start making some animal friends!
