#plus I have a couple things I'm actually finally getting around to plotting out
absolutebl · 11 months
Note
I kinda fell out of the BL game the last several months thanks to irl things, but I think I'm finally feeling like wading fully back in. I started with Love Syndrome III(only because @heretherebedork piqued my interest) and just finished Moonlight Chicken. What should I watch next? My limits are romanticized sexual assault, cheating, miscommunication as a main plot point, and no HEA. I could also do without a straight side couple, but I'd tolerate it if the main plot and couple are really good. Bonus points if there's a D/s dynamic, but that's not 100% necessary.
Thanks ❤️
Best of 2023 So Far?
Of course darling!
Hum last several months? Let's see...
Tumblr media
Our Dating Sim (Viki) - if you haven't watched this it's a must. I actually handed out a 10/10. I NEVER do that. I can't tell you how much I loved this show (or have already rewatched it). It's a perfect short form KBL, an office set reunion romance featuring geeks that really suits 8 eps with no fluff and no chaff. Just comforting and yummy. Full review.
Tumblr media
The New Employee (Viki) - just so good, SO QUEER, so soft, a near pitch perfect office BL with conflict derived from that setting. Also... Rainbow Rice Cakes and found fam and a lesbian bestie and all the goodness. My review is on MDL.
Tumblr media
The Eighth Sense (Viki) - speaking of queer, this one is a bit rough (sticky and gritty), more in the Moonlight Chicken area. But very high quality, fabulous chemistry, and a remarkably complex offering for a KBL - think Blueming-esk but even better.
Tumblr media
Unintentional Love Story (iQIYI) - @heretherebedork and I LOVED this one, but it is kinda hard to get hold of. I found the seme a bit stiff and reserved but Gongchan (who plays the uke) is a fucking GIFT. He has THE MOST expressive eyes, just drown in the emoting abyss. The external conflict tension and pressure is complex and excellent plus Korea gave us legit side dishes (NOT a love triangle, hally-fucking-luya). Review on MDL.
Tumblr media
My School President (YouTube) - I adored this one! My favorite GMMTV offering in dog's age, and my new favorite pair GeminiFourth. It could have gotten a 10/10 from me but for too much singing. This is the side pair from Moonlight Chicken anchoring a high school BL full of the most teenage pining ever and it's GREAT.
Tumblr media
All the Liquors (Viki, Gaga) - another KBL hitting hard and solid. This one is KBL-weird in the way of Tasty Florida or Behind Cut (which I've gotten used to, but is kinda a "type" now). It will wig you out if you have any baggage around alcohol. The logic behind the phobias are typically Asian romance qua? BUT it's still quite cute.
Tumblr media
Never Let Me Go (YT) - of GMMTV handing out new series to established pairs this has been the most successful IMHO. PondPhuwin were about 10000x better in this than FUTS (and that's FUTS's fault, not theirs). It's typically Thai in that its a bit bloated and has a confusing plot, but at least it HAD a plot and the central relationship is solid and loyal. Their Our Skyy 2 follow up is also good. And very much adds to the cannon in a fun way rather than feeling superfluous - making this show ultimately 14 eps rather than the usual 12.
Tumblr media
Bed Friend (YT, iQIYI, Gaga) - speaking of a bit bloated, this one derailed somewhat in plot for me (even at 10 eps) but NetJames really are glorious, and absolutely the hottest and the prettiest of 2023. Full of triggers for childhood abuse and sexual assault (backstory), but the main pair is very communication-heavy and based on a fuck buddy premise which has negotiation and everything, unique & fun to see. This is my high heat rec for the year so far, because the heat is PART OF THE PLOT and that's a gift we don't usually get. Review on MDL.
Tumblr media
Between Us (iQIYI) - I'm still processing this one. I didn't have as high expectations as most but it was still a little disappointing. BounPrem are lovely of course, but somehow it just wasn't quite what I wanted. I did a watch along for this one so you can see me struggle. However, objectively, held up against other BLs? It's actually pretty darn good.
I hope some of these you haven't seen. None have romanticized sexual assault, cheating, or miscommunication as a main plot point (hum... maybe Between Us? Honestly I can't remember the plot points, it was all over the place), and all have HEA (this is me after all(.

The Second…….Ball?
A bookshop, Eden, and something more?
In part 1 we discussed
the structure of the bookshop being similar to 17th century French gardens, a maybe hidden Tree of life, the idea of timestreams relating to the roads and rivers, and all that to just say the bookshop perhaps all of Wickber Street is their version of Eden
Part 1.5 was just a couple theories that have been floating around my head concerning
the book of life
the rings and a fly
the bookshop
a coffee
honestly I'm probably going to do a little editing. It’s not a necessary reading
But finally made it to part 2 where I'm going to dive into some out of order events and two different parts of the same story being played out at the same time plus the actual main plot, specifically in the last two episodes - though there is probably more earlier in the season
you can imagine the jumble that has been brain and why it took longer than I wanted to get this out.
Background Info
In part 1 I mentioned that the Tree of Life was mentioned in two particular books in the Bible - Genesis and Revelations. Now we’ve discussed the Genesis part - Eden - and now we are going to talk about Revelations - New Jerusalem
The Book of Revelation is the only apocalyptic book in the New Testament and it's where the Second Coming comes from - written by a John. It was mentioned in season 1 and I’m going to be making a lot of references to it throughout this.
New Jerusalem is the place where all true believers will spend eternity with God and is said to have pretty similar features to Eden - the rivers, the Tree of Life, the wall, and a square shape. Something that this place is also said to have is 12 gates.
Tumblr media
The New Jerusalem. Armenian manuscript by Malnazar and Aghap’ir in New Julfa bible, 1645
Oh lookie there mighty similar design to 17th century french gardens
But anyway want to take a guess at what has 12 windows?
Tumblr media
*I used the fire to show what windows are connected to the bookshop*
Ok but let’s get into the actual point of this I’ve talked enough about set design
Have we already seen a version of the Second Coming? Why yes we have
In episode 5 we are following two different stories cutting back and forth between the two - Aziraphale’s and Shax’s
Now before I get into this I’m just going to say that I know Good Omens is a parody to actual Biblical events and who knows what is actually going to happen in season 3 besides the man himself. We do know that this season was setting up for the next and that parallel scenes are a favorite. So these are just some parallels I noticed if you place some characters into the roles of others and it could very well turn out to be wrong
Shax’s Siege
Tumblr media
The thing about Shax’s character is that she is always looking for opportunities to get ahead and make connections that could benefit her later. We see it in 1941 and between then and now she has worked her way up from desk duty to Hell’s rep on earth.
And when she finally gets permission to attack the bookshop she actually takes up another role. Or shall I say multiple.
It is very obvious that once Shax gets to Earth she is out of her league - bitten off more than she can chew so to say - and yet she still wants more and is very good at manipulating beings to get there.
So she wants to storm the bookshop with legions of demons but only gets about 70. The thing that is interesting about there approach is you have demons coming from all four roads and she arrives last. And this is where we jump into Revelations.
In chapter 13 it talks of two beast - one from the sea and one from the land. The beast from the sea is said to have 7 heads, 10 crowns on the horns, is like a leopard with feet of a bear and the mouth of a lion, and one of its heads is said to have a mortal wound that is healed. This description has been likened to the four beast in the Book of Danial chapter 7 which were symbols of the four kingdoms - Babylon, Medes-Persia, Greece, and Rome. Some say this beast is the Antichrist as it is empowered by Satan to persecute Christians, blasphemy against God, and cult-like worship.
But all that to say I think that the arrival of the demons from all four sides was meant to kind of represent this. With the four beast representing the four kingdoms arriving on our four rivers roads. It’s not a perfect parallel but it is not meant to be - it’s meant to be a shitty rendition of what is basically Armageddon.
Now the second beast is mainly referred to as the false prophet. The only description is that it comes from the ground, two horns like a lamb but having the voice of a dragon. It has all the authority of the first beast and makes the inhabitants of earth worship the first beast, it breathes life into the first beast. It performs great signs like making fire come down from the Heavens to the Earth and causes all to be marked with the mark of the beast. Some call this beast the antichrist because it is performing miracles similar to that of Jesus.
This is the role I think Shax is trying to play - somewhat successfully. She arrives coming up out of the lift and through actions we see later kinda fulfill some of the rest of these points.
She also kind of jumps back and forth between these two beast with her authority - almost like she is not actually meant to be here, that they are all out of order. Mainly trying to be in the Antichrist position.
Shax is working the best with what she got.
But let’s switch over to our other story before we get to the confrontation
Aziraphale’s Ball
Tumblr media
In his part of the episode we have been following him around as he invites people to this “meeting”. Crowley is also there for a little bit until he is brought back to reality so to say by Nina and eventually goes to confront Gabriel.
But back to Aziraphale who is going shop to shop in alphabetical order as is on the list on his clipboard. And this is where we start to get some Revelation parallels.
Whereas the Shax parallels started in chapter 13 Aziraphale joins in at the end of chapter 20 with the mention of the Book of Life - or in other words the list of names that are let into this New Jerusalem, that were God’s people.
Aziraphale having a list of people that he is inviting into his bookshop, a notorious place where he doesn’t want humans I feel is pretty significant. But all doesn’t go smoothly and he has to convince some people to come - I could go into each person he talks too but mainly he is using books and christmas lights to convince the people who don’t want to come. But what could those represent?
Books - eternal life for authors
Christmas Lights - the light that Jesus brought back into a world of darkness
Giving out the books/fruit of the Tree of Life so people will come to the ball/paradise hmm Aziraphale?
Interesting that we don’t see Mr. Brown’s shop on this list isn’t it? Keep that in mind.
But we continue on to Aziraphale decorating the Bookshop. With two scenes of him doing this one - moving the bookcases, or interior walls, and two - bring the chandelier down
In chapter 21, John is said to have seen New Jerusalem and New Earth descend from the Heavens - noting that there was no temple,
This could be paralleled to the scene where Crowley is looking into the Bookshop watching as Aziraphale has a chandelier descend from the ceiling.
It’s also important to note at this point that Gabriel arriving quite literally upended their lives and inadvertently set off the very same events he didn’t want to happen, The Second Coming. With him acting as a Jesus parallel.
But back to what is happening with Aziraphale. People are starting to arrive!! And he is changing their clothes?
Revelation 22:14 - Blessed are those who wash their robes, so they may have access to the tree of life and they may enter the city by the gates.
Washing their robes is meant to symbolize a full cleansing from sin that they must be free from to enter New Jerusalem
So Aziraphale is changing (washing) their clothes to make them acceptable for the ball (New Jerusalem)
Now you may be wondering how would you even prove that it happened? The seamstress conversation is how.
On one side it probably was how people from the time period Aziraphale is trying to create talked but it’s also removing the nature of the “sin”
Aziraphale does not even know what she technically does and yet it is still changed. When Mrs. Sandwich later tries to say what her job is she can’t actually say it and has to describe it - all using sewing terms. She even calls out at one point that the “devil may take it.”
But why? Aziraphale doesn’t even know and if he did I doubt he was care very much - unless something else was at play here.
Heavens standards - which in this universe includes adultery as bad, as a sin. We see examples with the references to Solomon and Gomorrah and “Thou shall not commit adultery Pulsifer”
The way she describes it as well leans towards this angle as well. With the “in want of the tender attention of a wife”
But back to Jim though who throughout all of this has been our Jesus parallel - he is out mingling with the people for the first time dressed in a wonderful blue suit.
Revelation 22 - The throne of God and the Lamb are in the city, and His people worship Him. There is no night and no need for other sources of light, for the Lord Himself gives the light, and they reign forever.
God and Jesus finally walking among and interacting with their people - and Jim seems to be having a grand ol time
yes i’m putting Aziraphale into Gods position- tricky business there i know
There is also some more references with the Candelabra’s that are around the shop - both the 3 and 7 versions. These guys have a bunch of different meaning but the ones that really stick out is The Holy Trinity and the Seven Angels or the Seven Churches
(I also had this whole bit planned about the temple which is said to be destroyed in the Second Coming of Jesus because it now holds no place in Jerusalem because God and Jesus are now among them and relating it to the Second Temple. I’m a bit iffy about it though just with some of reasoning but that was the basics of it - I might end up coming back to this at some point)
But all this to say that Aziraphale has basically made his version of paradise - unintentionally mirroring what is said to be the real one
The Collide
Tumblr media
And our two stories meet….somehow. We left off with Shax in chapter 13 and Aziraphale in chapter 22 so quite a bit has to happen to get them to the same place - and it does a little bit out of order
Things come crashing to a stop quite literally when the demons throw the brick? wall piece? through the window. Shax makes her threats particularly to the humans. Perhaps because they don’t have the Mark of the Beast? Which they would need to buy things and as we know from Jim earlier, they aren’t selling
But the next big event is Jim walking out of the bookshop
Tumblr media
which has been linked to this pose
Tumblr media
and continues Shax’s story into Revelations 14
Revelation 14:14 Then I looked, and behold, a white cloud, and on the cloud sat One like the Son of Man
but he is also start Aziraphale’s story back up when he goes back into the shop - just going backwards now
Revelation 20:5 The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were completed. This is the first resurrection. How fortunate and holy is the one who has a share in the first resurrection!
Mr. Brown then gets grabbed and thrown out of the shop, remember how his shops name wasn’t on the list? His name is not in the Book of Life therefore he is thrown into a Lake of Fire
Crowley then brings the humans back outside telling them to go back to their shops thus removing them from New Jerusalem and reversing judgement
and then he exits the stage as well and our jumping around really begins with episode 6 - so quick-fire
Shax gains confidence in her attack as soon as she notices Crowley has left and while this is happening Aziraphale put the chandelier back…. from wherever it came from. Effectively undescending New Jerusalem and putting that behind them as they work to meet up to where Shax is at in the story.
Aziraphale starts setting up the portal and tells Shax she is not welcomed here
Revelations 14: 9-11 - Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand, he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.”
Demons throw trash into the bookshop and Aziraphale runs off to tell Jim to hide leaving Maggie and Nina to deal with Shax
Revelation 14: 17-20 Then another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, he also having a sharp sickle. And another angel came out from the altar, who had power over fire, and he cried with a loud cry to him who had the sharp sickle, saying, “Thrust in your sharp sickle and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth, for her grapes are fully ripe.” So the angel thrust his sickle into the earth and gathered the vine of the earth, and threw it into the great winepress of the wrath of God. And the winepress was trampled outside the city, and blood came out of the winepress, up to the horses’ bridles, for one thousand six hundred furlongs.
Maggie is then manipulated by Shax to let the demons in the shop
By this point I think the true role of Shax has come into play and it’s a nod back to Madam Tracy. The role is in Revelation 17 - The Whore of Babylon - the epitome of sin, ruler over 7 kingdoms, quick with her tongue and good with her words, draped in the finest clothes of purple and scarlet
Demons start to enter the shop and Aziraphale activates the portal - Shax discorporates Eric and we see Jim’s position on the stairs above everyone
Revelation 15 - The Seven Plagues - yes I know they haven’t quite got to anything else besides the portal and even then they don’t use seven different things but this chapter really is just setting up for the next and I wanted to mention one thing before moving into the next
Revelation 15:8 And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God and from his power, and no one could enter the temple until the seven plagues of the seven angels were completed
the smoke coming from the demons discorporating and the fire extinguishers while Jim is absent
Demons start stepping into the portal - Maggie, Nina, and Aziraphale have to come up with another plan - Demons push book selves over and Maggie and Nina start with the fire extinguishers
They have now gone up the stairs to the second floor of the bookshop for the first floor has been over taken by the demons - Aziraphale charges Shax to leave this place - Shax starts to insult Aziraphale
Revelation 18:2 With a mighty voice he shouted: “ ‘Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great!’She has become a dwelling for demons and a haunt for every impure spirit, a haunt for every unclean bird, a haunt for every unclean and detestable animal.
Jim is sent away after asking if anyone wants hot chocolate
I don’t have anything to compare this to. I just think it’s interesting that Aziraphale(and Maggie and Nina) were offered hot chocolate and declined, especially with all the talks about coffee vs death
Maggie and Nina continue with the fire extinguishers - and then they start with the books - no more fire extinguishers or books and Aziraphale pulls out the old Halo trick
Revelation 16 - Bowls of Wrath - now the chapter with the actual description of the seven bowls. By now we have seen all of the moves Aziraphale, Maggie, and Nina pull but I really wanted to point out the comparison of the last bowl particularly what happened afterwards and the Halo so,
Revelation 16:17-20 The seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and out of the temple came a loud voice from the throne, saying, “It is done!” Then there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder and a severe earthquake. No earthquake like it has ever occurred since mankind has been on earth, so tremendous was the quake. The great city split into three parts, and the cities of the nations collapsed. God remembered Babylon the Great and gave her the cup filled with the wine of the fury of his wrath. Every island fled away and the mountains could not be found.
All demons are discorporated with Shax unconscious on the couch
Revelation 19:2 for true and just are his judgments. He has condemned the great prostitute who corrupted the earth by her adulteries. He has avenged on her the blood of his servants.
Revelation 19:20 And the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who in its presence had done the signs by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshipped its image. These two were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur.
and with that it is over
so yeah that was a lot and it’s not perfect but remember when it was mentioned back in season 1 it was among prophecies that were not entirely accurate and that it was a rushed, only kinda planned attack. So really I just view this as very quick run down version of the Second Coming where there is not enough players
plus you have Crowley’s side to this story which seems to be the reality - dealing with the actual problem that has been going on throughout the season (Gabriel) instead of hosting a Ball or trying to make a power play
but if you made it this far have a little treat in the spirit of the holiday season, or if you don’t celebrate anything than just for getting to the end of this
New Jerusalem was also described as "the bride, the wife of the lamb” - and we all know that Ball was for Aziraphale and Crowley, as much as he may deny it, so really Aziraphale was saying “let’s get married, I’m your wife now”

morales twins vigilantes: getting found out pt 1
hey yall im in my fic writing era. but i am BAD at writing LMFAO i'm really not sure i'll ever write a proper fic with a plot or anything
either way, i hope yall like this lil drabble my brain came up with on a whim of the morales twins!
it's how i imagine the way their secret would be revealed after doing the whole vigilante thing together for a lil bit. it's kind of based on the hcs i had of the twins which is here, kind of a continuation of the last bullet point there actually
miles1610 is miles and miles42 is milo bc i read a couple fics with that name given to him and now it is stuck in my heart u_u
>2nd part here<
well. uh. hope u enjoy! :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was a fight that went slightly awry that really did them in.
No blood, no fireworks, no loud banging or explosions or anything. No one was even so badly hurt that they almost died, either.
It was simply just… a broken mask and their father unexpectedly being on patrol that fateful night that finally brought their secret out to light.
The Morales twins had been doing their vigilante thing together for only a few months now. Miles had been Spider-man for well over a year, of course, but it was after a particularly bad fight with a rhinoceros guy (what a freak…) that went semi-viral on social media that his brother Milo finally put his foot down and pulled those Prowler gloves from under his bed. He worked hard to modify the technology to better suit him, and had all of the armor and rope he needed in order to keep up with his brother all set in as little as 2 weeks.
Miles hemmed and hawed about bringing his not-super-powered brother around for the nasty fights he usually tackled alone. But he would be lying if he said that Milo’s concern didn’t put a small smile on his face in the end. Plus, it really helped out a lot when Miles needed to be somewhere quickly but still had a criminal left to take on and web up. Milo being just one text away from springing into action took a real big load off of his shoulders in ways he couldn’t even imagine.
That was about 3 months ago.
It was relatively smooth sailing until one Jefferson Davis took a night patrol under his belt without even warning the boys.
Well, Miles thought to himself in retrospect, we weren’t really around the house to catch if he did tell anyone, so.
Miles ran along a side of a building to catch up with the villain of the week. He was desperately trying to keep this super-powered baddie off of his not-so-super-powered brother, and not quite succeeding. Miles told Milo time and again not to tease any bad guys during a fight. Keep the attention off of you, bro. You do not have superpowers. I do! Is that not what Miles said? God, it’s like in one ear and out the other with this guy. Ugh.
Currently, Milo is parrying and deflecting attacks from this shocker-looking guy, a real piece of work. He still had his hi-vis vest on-- and Miles swore he even saw a name tag on it somewhere which was just hilarious, really-- but aside from his normal-looking work outfit, everything else about this dude was definitely not normal. Like the bright electricity fizzing all over his skull that just barely concealed this man’s real face, and the giant lightning bolts shooting out from his hands as he tried to fry Milo. It was a good thing Milo had enough sense to install energy-absorbing tech into those giant claws of his, or else Miles would be in real big trouble at the ER.
Miles ripped a chunk of some abandoned demolition project that never got done and swung it with all of his might in the direction of their fight, using his webs for maximum distance. It didn’t hit electro-dude but it almost hit his brother. Oops.
“Ayo, watch it!” Prowler growled, his mask distorting his voice the same way it distorted Uncle Aaron’s back when he held the mantle. He gracefully flipped out of the way and shot a grappling hook somewhere off into some scaffolding, pulling himself away from the action to let his bro fly in and give the temporarily-distracted electric-man some work.
Miles would snap back with a retort if he weren’t so busy pummeling this villain with all that he’s got. Both boys’ curfews were about an hour ago and they just knew their mom would be fuming once she got back and found out. But this needed taking care of, and neither Morales boys were willing to leave some freak of nature to take over Brooklyn and shut down all the power lines over a bedtime. Hell no.
But this needed to end now, or else good ol’ Spidey won’t be seeing the light of day for another 2 months. And by the looks of it, neither will the Prowler. Before Miles could even think to land the finishing blow on old lightning-head here though, tragedy struck.
An all-too familiar voice hollers out those dreaded words both boys hate hearing, especially in the middle of a fight.
“PDNY! Freeze! Put your hands up where we can see ‘em!”
Everyone did freeze, Milo looking particularly shocked as his head swivels around to the sight of waving flashlights and 3 burly but familiar silhouettes making their way past the far gates and advancing quickly into the fray.
Jefferson Davis’ gun appears to almost materialize out of the shadows, his face lit up in the harsh lights of his flashlight beam, sporting an intimidating, professional look. Cop mode, is what Miles and Milo called it jokingly one day as they lounged in their room, passing a bag of chips between them and having a laugh at their dad’s expense. That was before Milo took on the mantle of the Prowler. That was before this.
Miles panics slightly as he feels the man jump up underneath him, thrusting an arm into the police’s direction, ready to fire off a bolt--
Right after Milo lunges in front of the officers, ready to take the blast.
It happens in a fraction of a second. Miles didn’t even think he had enough time to open his mouth, let alone warn Jeff of the incoming danger. He figures that’s what Milo must’ve thought, too, otherwise there really was no other explanation for this stupid decision he just made.
Sparks flew, and then the thud of a body hitting the floor seemed to echo throughout the demolition site.
Shit shit shit shit shitshitshitshitshit, was Miles’ inner monologue as he finally landed the blow to the side of the baddie’s head, knocking him out successfully. He quickly webbed the man up to the floor, restraining him fully. The way I shoulda done in the first place, damnit, Miles lamented, freezing in place after the deed was done. His brain was working into overdrive to try and think of ways he could extract his now-nearly unconscious brother from this place without raising their dad’s suspicions.
Ever since Prowler joined in on Spider-man’s “adventures”, the media became even more fascinated with capturing every single moment it could of Spidey now that he had a sidekick in tow.
Headlines splashed on magazines, articles and news feeds read: “Batman and Robin! Spider-man and… the Prowler?” and “Webbed Menace Recruits Purple Sidekick, Even More of a Menace”. They haunted Miles’ every step. Milo, for his part, was mostly amused. But every now and then he would complain about being known as his brother’s sidekick, as if that was the most egregious part of having his every move recorded and uploaded for millions to see online.
Their mother became even more suspicious of her twin sons after she watched a video of the two vigilantes stopping a runaway bus in downtown Brooklyn. They looked eerily similar in size to her own teenage boys, and even seemed to banter the same way after all of the civilians were saved and back on solid ground. The way Spider-man clapped Prowler on the shoulder… hmmm.
To say that she shared her suspicions with her husband would be an understatement. Milo and Miles somehow always managed to catch a familiar cop car slowly rolling around corners and down streets, keeping pace just behind them, watching them. Miles would always roll his eyes, knowing it was their father. Milo would be annoyed but managed to shrug and keep minding his own business, since it was very obviously their father. When confronted, Jeff would try-- and fail-- to casually brush it off as simply doing Concerned Dad things.
“Listen, you two.” Jeff started one evening after dinner. He managed to get both boys down in their room one weekend, just for “a quick talk”. His excuse was that Brooklyn was getting too dangerous lately, especially at night, and that he was “gonna keep an eye on them” as a precaution.
But neither boy missed that slight nervous shift in his stance as he delivered the news, and once their dad bade them a good night and left, they gave each other a silent look that conveyed the exact same thought they were both thinking.
They’re onto us.
Well, their parents’ fears and suspicions were definitely going to be confirmed whether the twins liked it or not.
Milo groaned on the ground, the Prowler gauntlets having taken the majority of the blast sent his way, but the mask was halfway blown off, revealing a good portion of the boy’s face underneath. He rocked in place for a moment, blinking stars and dancing lights out of his eyes for just that one moment.
“Prowler!!” Miles shouted. In his panic, he forgot to lower his voice and conceal his identity, but his feet just wouldn’t move! What the hell, Morales… get it together! His brother was just badly injured and here he was, frozen in place like a deer.
Jeff, for his part, was barking orders to his coworkers and directing them to make a sweep of the place in case any other suspects tried to make a run for it.
They both left. He finally jolted his bright beam of light onto Spider-man, simply standing there a little ways away and staring back with those unnervingly gigantic bug-eyes of his. If Jeff wasn’t in work-mode right now, he’d explode on this guy and ask about what the hell was going on here, but Officer Davis was nothing if not a consummate professional.
Plus, there were more pressing matters to attend to.
There was what seemed like a teenage boy on the ground, wearing those goddamned gauntlets that Jeff could’ve sworn he shipped off to the junkyard after Aaron’s funeral. Damnit, if this punk was running around wearing his brother’s mantle and tagging along with Spider-man just to double-cross him in the end, there was gonna be hell to pay.
Jeff didn’t know why, but he felt slightly protective of the bug-themed hero, damnit. Sue him. And those claws brought nothing but terrible memories of screaming women, dead brothers and heightened stress. He did not need this right now, fuck.
Once the boy on the ground stirred, Jeff quickly pointed his gun and flashlight beam directly onto him. “Those orders were for you, too, punk. Do not try me tonight. Freeze. Put your hands out where I can see ‘em!”
Milo froze on the ground, and then tried to twist his face away from his looming father who was only a foot or two away with the world’s brightest flashlight in his face, fuuuuck. He just knew he was gonna be feeling this headache for the next 3 days…
Tentatively, he also raised his claws in front of his face as slowly as he could, trying to cover his face even more. He propped himself up on his elbows and tried to regulate his breathing.
Having a cop for a dad was not always peachy, but it helped a lot to know exactly how an officer would react if any sudden movements were made while having a gun out, and Milo was not trying to get a bullet to the chest on top of the mother of all electric shocks as well. No thank you.
It was in this moment that Miles’ brain started working again, and he unstuck himself from the pavement to reach out to his dad.
“Offi-- ahem, ahem. Officer Davis,” he remembered to lower his tone and conceal his voice a bit as well, and continued, “what a surprise to see you here. On this, uh. This very beautiful night!”
Groan. Oh my god. Even Milo rolled his eyes a bit, trying to shuffle back.
“I said FREEZE!” Jeff roared, attention still trained on Milo.
Without glancing up, he added, “And you Spider-man. Oh, buddy you are gonna get it after I’m done with this little asshole, runnin’ around with my brother’s-- man, y’know what-- nevermind! Just stay back, okay? I got this handled.”
“But wait! Th-that’s uh. He’s not an asshole, officer, he’s my-- my sidekick! He’s the good guy!! He helped me take this guy down! And he even saved you just now!” Miles waved his hands around frantically, agitating Jeff.
Stop doing that, stupid! Milo thought to himself in a daze, still recovering from the electric blast.
“Stay back, Spider-man. I’m warning you.” Jeff growled.
Miles picked up the hint and halted his movements, giant white eyes flicking back up and down from his dad to his brother and back. He had to think of something, or else Milo would be dragged back to a holding cell and both of their identities would be out. He just couldn’t let that happen.
Biting his lip, Miles gathered some resolve and stepped forward again. “Officer Davis—”
“Not another word outta you!” Jeff swung the flashlight right back onto Miles threateningly, and then trained it back onto Milo again. “I am serious right now, Spidey. One more word outta you and I’m slappin’ the cuffs on you too, I swear to god! I got more than enough room in the back of the squad car for two freaks!”
Miles recoiled. “Freaks. Geez, is that what you think of us?”
But Jeff didn’t answer, because he was all of a sudden deathly silent.
Both of the other officers just finished their sweep of the area, and were making their way back to Jeff when he all of a sudden kneeled down, still training that gun on Prowler’s face. But his movements were slow and hesitant, as if he were performing them in a daze.
Miles’ spider senses should’ve been tingling by now, at the very least a little. Still, he stayed glued to his spot as he watched Officer Davis-- as if in slow motion-- shifting his flashlight and gun into one hand, lowering both slightly and away from Prowler’s shattered mask.
As his other hand reached out, Milo flinched, but he didn’t need to. Jeff simply carded his calloused fingers over his hair, his braid on the one side of his head, in reverence. Milo couldn’t breathe. He was too scared to speak.
And then everyone’s blood ran cold at the same time.
Jeff saw the beads of Milo’s favorite basketball team colors, ones that he was excited to get again at the barber shop last weekend, simply hanging there tied to the ends of the Prowler’s braid, sitting limply in his hand. Milo’s blood ran cold once he realized exactly what it was that his own father was looking at. He didn’t need to reveal his face whatsoever when his now-exposed hair told the whole story anyways.
Miles’ spider senses finally kicked up once Jeff looked up slowly, an absolutely ruined expression rippling across his worn-out features as he really gave Spider-man a good, hard look, eyes playing over what little he could see of the vigilante in the darkness of night.
For a split second, no one said anything.
Even electro-head seemed to be silent as he came to and tried to sneakily rip the webs off of him. No dice. He finally turned his attention to the trio not too far away and opened his mouth.
“Hey, what the hell is this, some family reunion or something? Let me outta here, man! Goddamn, what a fuckin’ punch, man… shit…”
Everyone startled at the same time, turning their attention to the villain. Damn, almost forgot about him.
The other officers finally arrived to surround the other angles behind Spider-man, one of them even kneeling down beside electric-- whatever, the villain of the week-- and started cutting him out of the sticky ropes to put him in cuffs.
“Don’t even think about it,” one of them grunted once they got to his hands and saw a tingle of electricity surging through fingertips. “We got dampeners in my squad car if you try anything cute, got it?”
Jeff slowly holstered his gun, keeping the flashlight trained on the Prowler, unable to tear his eyes from this boy lying on the ground at his feet.
“Davis…? You good?” This was the officer who wasn’t busy wrangling sticky webs off of the baddie. He had his flashlight and gun trained on said baddie of course, but his head was swiveled to look at his captain.
Jeff swallowed hard and nodded slowly, a weirdly mechanical kind of movement.
“…Okay. Hey, Spidey. Thanks for this, I guess,” said the officer, keeping his concerned gaze trained on Jeff, shrugging a shoulder. “Too bad about your friend though. Hope he’ll be fine.”
It took Miles a second to recognize that iconic mustache, and then it dawned on him that it was his dad’s faithful friend and his own sidekick, Officer Gutierrez. How ironic, Miles thought ruefully.
He turned back to his dad, who was now helping Prowler up from the ground and steadying him against his side.
“What’re we doing with these two?” Gutierrez asks, because someone has to.
Jeff startles, as if he was just asleep and happened to wake up. “Uhh, about...?”
Gutierrez gave him a look. “The mask guy under your arm. And, uh. This guy,” he points his chin towards VOTW (villain of the week) as he’s being hauled up forcibly by the other officer, now in giant sturdy cuffs binding his arms together.
“The… that guy. Electric man. Just… just put those dampeners on his hands and take him down to HQ. They’ll probably just ship him off to the Raft. Let me know when you guys get there, of course. I’ll uhm. I think I’m gonna be taking my break right now.”
“You taking the mask-man all by yourself, then, captain?”
“Yeah. Yeah, I will. It’s… something personal to me, to be seeing these claws on this boy. I’m sorry. I think I might explain later but right now, we gotta get that guy behind some kinda bars. Please, Gutierrez.”
Gutierrez gives him an unreadable expression, and Jeff shoots an apologetic look back.
Finally, his partner gives a small nod and turns back to the task at hand. Miles breathes out a sigh of relief.
But it was a breath too soon.
“Spider-man. Prowler. The both of you. My car. Now.”

Did you enjoy tsats? I've seen you posting and rebloggin some critics, but was the book enjoyable?
So I haven't actually finished the book yet but at this point... I'm not sure that I will. But I have a lot of thoughts anyway. And I've been reblogging the posts that match up with my own reading experience (mostly because it's becoming clear the book continues to follow this pattern I've already noticed, so I'm not concerned about spoilers anymore).
The thing is, I went into the book with low expectations. I'm not a big fan of Will Solace - though I like the Apollo cabin in general. I was really hoping to pick up the book be shown why I should like Will. Instead, I got a character assassination. Will is flawed, and I appreciate those flaws, but not in the way Oshiro (and it was clearly Oshiro at this point) protrayed them.
I was actually prepared for the mismatched lore and some minor retcons - because every Riordan book includes those! Plus, I'm not opposed to a character-based narrative, in fact, I generally prefer stories with a lot of angst and drama. I also wasn't bothered by the lovey-dovey way Will and Nico interact, I found it sweet.
Unforunately, the book, on a technical level, is poorly written. For one, the central metaphor of the story "darkness vs light" is not done well. It lacks concrete examples.
Is it about their powers? It shouldn't be - that dynamic is more about "death vs life" than anything else. If that is the case - it's odd that Will reacting to "death energy" now. Other characters found Nico's "death energu" creepy, Will found it cool. So the entire conflict wouldn't be in character, that's what the metaphor is angling towards (again, it seems purposefully misleading to rebrand "death vs life" to "darkness vs light").
Is it about their personalities? It could be. Nico often describes Will as unfailing kind in this book, always smiling, always warm. It harkens back to Nico's description of Will as a chill cat bathing in the sunlight. Now, we all know that Will isn't like this, at his heart. The flaws beneath that persona could be his "darkness". However, Nico seems to hate that part of Will. The part that's arrogant, that sees his way of doing things as best, etc. Furthermore, Nico is apparently "all darkness" to Will, but like... what does that mean? Nico is a bleeding heart, he's giving and he's caring, and does Will not realise that? Like, if that's the case, why are they dating? How have they been dating for an entire year and Will doesn't know that? It's just... not good.
But that's not where the problems end. The pacing is slow, the entire book drags. I feel like the characters the couple run into don't push the drama / angst as far as it should, considering this is a book focused on that. There are many more characters who could show where Nico and Will's worldviews fundamentally misalign!
Finally, this is an example of a wider plot / set-up issue: Will's backpack. At the start of the adventure, Will fills a large backpack with "stuff". The only real item we're told about is a Sun Lamp. That's an issue, because if we don't know what's in the backpack there's less chance that Will will actually use the stuff inside. And if he does use any items, it will feel contrived. Furthermore, by this point in the book, Oshiro seems to have forgotten that Will is lugging a heavy bag around. When Will gets tired he doesn't mention it nor Nico does offer to carry the bag.
We know that Will has never been on a proper quest, but he has fought in three wars at this point. He is a veteran! I think the backpack would have been an excellent opporunity to show Will's character and experience. Maybe he knows that he tends to freak out in battle when he doesn't know what he should be doing (if someone's injured then, well, it's obvious his job to fix them) - so he's overcompensating.
Have Will pick up items from various campers as he prepares to go. Maybe he gets grenades from Clarisse, traps from Cecil, a magical flare gun from Lou Ellen. There - now we know what Will is taking to the underworld. We are also reminded of Will's friends at camp. And these items would help make Will more useful! Instead of giving Will random new powers, just... have him use the items he brought with him!
I have no idea if Will does, in fact, pull something out of his bag at some point. But at this point, I'm really doubtful.
((I actually have so many more issues with this book but these are some examples))
I hope you don't mind the rant! I really did go into this book with an open mind - I was really to give it a chance. But pretty much every writing choice Oshiro made is one I disagree with, and that's hard to put aside.

ok ill bite. whats this about turning block people into rock people (the gem au btw)
HOO BOY, I'VE HAD THIS AU IN MY MIND FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS NOW:
so! general gist of the au's premise: the dsmp characters and (part of) the plot get put into a Steven Universe kind of world, where there are Gems (rock aliens that have no gender. i'm pretty sure that's canon) and humans. the characters, depending on what i think would be cool, are split between these two species. it doesn't follow the plot of SU exactly (there is no Gem-Human hybrid as the main character, most of the Diamonds are actually better than they were canonically. kinda, anyway, and what exactly caused the "Gem War" is different), but there are a few similarities.
so! PLOT TIME (i'll be using the Gem names, 'cause why not)
(i apologize how long this took, there is just. So Much)
there are four Diamonds: Green, Black, Pink, and Amber Diamond, in order of age (these are c!Dream, Bad, Eret, and Wilbur, respectively). each of them get their own colonies, and eventually, Amber gets his own (Earth and the Moon).
Pink and Amber are besties :]
unlike in the actual show, when Amber asks the others to leave Earth alone, as to not destroy the planet, that request is respected.
the problem? Amber is unable to "grow" his own Gems, meaning that he requires help from the other Diamonds
the other Diamonds give him a few extra Gems here and there, including "undesirable" Gems: "defective" Gems (have multiple things wrong with them by Homeworld's standards; generally aren't viewed as functioning well/properly), "off-color" Gems (not necessarily defective, but have some things off with them physically (wrong color, for example) and/or have wonky powers), and "rogue/rebel" Gems (have no desire to follow the purpose the Diamonds have chosen for their Gem Type; ex. a Quartz of any type doesn't want to be a soldier or guard. "rebel" is generally used when a Gem is "at risk" of being a "problem," and "rogue" is basically shorthand for "is currently a problem"). Amber would end up showing these Gems more kindness than the other Diamonds did (except for Pink, but due to Reasons (*cough* Green) she can't be as open about it as Amber does)
through this, Amber receives four Gems that he will come to consider family: a "rebel" Jade and an Obsidian from Black Diamond (Phil and Kristin), a "rogue" Rose Quartz from Pink (Techno), and a "rebel" Lapis Lazuli (Clementine).
how did they each get labeled this way? well...
Jade didn't just want to sit around and deal with High-Ranking Gem BS, he wanted to go explore!! maybe even build stuff (which is i recall from the show was a job for Bismuths)!! and the Obsidian? she just followed him when he was sent off.
Rose Quartz was...more violent than RQ's typically are (they're generally healing/guard Gems. but this is obviously Techno we're talking about here. plus Anarchy™), and while Pink is generally accepting like Amber is, he feels pressured by the other Diamonds (Green specifically), so they just gently send any "troublemakers" over to Amber.
and the Lapis Lazuli? well...they're generally pretty quiet, keep to themselves, and listen to orders pretty well. not this one: she pretty much came out of the ground loud, a bit rowdy, and just generally telling everyone to F**k Off. Amber had to go and get her from Green himself before that guy decided to shatter her or something. when they finally went down to Earth, her first words to Amber were something along the lines of "Did I do something wrong?" Amber assured her that she didn't do anything wrong.
and now we have SBI + Kristin :]
so yeah. if it wasn't obvious, Amber pretty much believes that Gems should just be allowed to do what they want, as long as they aren't hurting anyone.
the SBI learns from humans that names exist, and give each other names. they're the same ones that. y'know. the characters have (Amber is Wilbur, Lapis is Clem, etc.)
Amber and Green...didn't get along. So A War Starts!
things are fine...until Green gets one of his Quartzes (Punz) to assassinate/shatter Amber, only stating to leave no witnesses. which he does. but, oh, what's this? Clem Witnesses It But Is Hiding! So Quartz Doesn't See Her!
Green somehow covers the whole thing up. the other remaining Diamonds are suspicious, however (Pink more so than Black)
SBI, over the next few centuries, research to figure out how to bring Wilbur back. and they find one! but it basically requires the essence of the other Diamonds and a Rose Quartz's tears. they already have Techno, so now they need the Diamond's help. Clem offers to go do it
things go well when asking Pink and Black. it's with Green that problems start (because of course it is, right?)
so. she gets to Green. he eventually decides "f**k it, i'll help bring Amber back, everyone's too suspicious of me already." Clem gets the Diamond essence, and gets ready to leave.
and then she sees Quartz. and gets rightfully pissed off
Green, now realizing that there Was a witness to Wilbur's assassination, kind of...panics. and does the one thing that comes to mind for him to do.
he cracks her gem. Badly
now. here's the reason why that's bad: That's The Equivalent Of Attempting To Murder Someone And Putting Them Into A Coma.
given, y'know, that people Already suspect him of having some role to play in Wilbur's death, and that people would probably get Pissed if they figured out what he did, he decides to bubble her gem (something that Gems can do; they quite literally create a bubble around the object they're bubbling) and teleport that bubble to his "Bubble Room" (something else gems can have, apparently), and forces all the Gems that were in the Throne Room/Palace he has to keep quiet about what happened and claim that Clem just never arrived there.
some Gems who are technically witnesses, who Will be important later, are an Amethyst guard (Purpled; didn't tell anyone because he was a direct witness (heard the yelling and subsequent cracking of Clem's gemstone) and was honestly scared for his life should no one believe him) and a Brown Agate (Schlatt; didn't say anything because he genuinely didn't give a s**t).
Pink and Green despise each other after this :]
for the next 2,000 years, various different things happened:
two new Gems joined Green's Court: an "overcooked ('defective')" Bumblebee Jasper (Tubbo; is basically just much shorter than Jaspers are, a consequence of the Gem staying underground too long. he's also one of the spotty bumblebee jaspers :]) and a "defective" Snowflake Obsidian (Ranboo; is technically a perma-fusion from birth. two gems combined before Ranboo was "born," thus making Ranboo a fusion. they literally cannot unfuse, because he will die). these two hate their jobs. due to Ranboo's circumstances (which, keep in mind, is something out of his control), they are practically treated like a Pearl (literally a servant Gem. like, they are the lowest on the Gem Hierarchy due to something Ranboo Can't Control. like, his options are either to Literally Die or be treated like a servant).
Clem is stuck in a Limbo between life and death
the rest of the SBI and a bunch of corrupted Gems are still on Earth. the other members of SBI view what happened to Clem as a threat.
Brown Agate is sent on missions with an Azurite (Quackity; relatively High-Ranking Gem in Black Diamond's Court) and a Pyrite (Foolish; not technically a High-Ranking Gem, but Pink is really close to him, so they made him High-Ranking because F**k Green, She Does What She Wants <3). these three basically hate each other, but Azurite and Pyrite hate each other less.
so...in the show, the Diamonds created a Human Zoo. in the show, this was to preserve humans so that they wouldn't go extinct from the Earth getting destroyed. in this au, it's because Gems genuinely don't understand that humans are sentient too. so like, this wasn't entirely done out of malice. again, not entirely
so...now that we've got caught up on the past two millennia, now let's enter the 21st century! :D
now we finally get introduced to some humans :]
Puffy: a sailor/fisherwoman who lives in a seaside town with her adopted daughter Michelle. she has always dreamed of adventure, maybe even a sea adventure :]
Niki and Jack: live in a small town. Niki is a baker and Jack works at a motel in town :]
Ponk: lives in the same town as Puffy. they're a doctor :]
Fundy: a teen interested in coding and stuff. doesn't have..the best home life, but it doesn't deter him from his coding dreams. he lives in the same town as Niki and Jack :]
i'll continue this in another reblog, give me a bit. hit a character limit

House of Flame and Shadow SPOILERS
SPOILERS for the entire book, including the bonus chapters. Oh, and also for all of ACOTAR, just to be safe.
[Bryce x Prythian/ACOTAR]
In Part 1, I was a little underwhelmed about the 'ACOTAR crossover'. First of all the whole time I was thinking: you're on the same side, you're all good guys, you should be friends!! Go eat dinner together! But of course I do understand why they would all be wary of each other...
I guess I was hoping to see more character interactions, and to check in on the couples/families. We didn't get to see Feyre and Nyx, and Rhys and Cassian were barely there. (Although I did appreciate Az mentioning all of them to Nesta when she had the Mask, that was sweet.) Anyway, I did enjoy what we got, but I wish there was more and I'm definitely glad that we returned to them at the end of the book and in the Ember/Randall bonus chapter.
The whole time Bryce was in Prythian it just seemed like a super long history lesson/Bryce shennanagins with a reappearrance from the wyrm which I did not need haha. And it felt like that part of the book dragged on for more than it needed to, the whole time I felt like I was waiting for everyone to be reunited already so that the main plot could actually begin...And then, once Bryce is home, the dungeon rescue STILL hasn't happened, and we have to wait until halfway through the book for the big reunion.
[Meanwhile, back on Midgard]
Oh boy, things were getting super graphic and gory for both of the storylines (Ithan/Tharion and Hunt/Rhun/Baxian). The torture was...a lot, some parts I had to skim through super fast. I think it was made a little better by the fact that the torture was just so extreme and not something an actual human could live through, due to their healing powers. (How sad was Hunt, thinking about the babies he would never get to have? And sweet Rhun, thinking he would be sacrificing himself to save Bryce and the others...💔💔💔)
I thought the rescue was awesome! I especially liked the parts that were from Rhun's POV where he's like totally out of it, I think it was a great way of showing how he was feeling with everything.
And when Bryce is finally reunited with everyone, announcing herself as QUEEN, I thought that was a great typical Bryce dramatic entrance. And after this, the pacing of the book was a little better. Or at least, I didn't feel as rushed to get through it as when they were all apart. The one thing I missed is that there wasn't so much down time and chances for the characters to just talk (or do more than talk...), it was go go go for like one week straight.
[Tharion and Ithan etc]
I think these are everyone's least favorite POVs - I seriously hope they are not main characters in House of Many Waters but they probably will be because who else?
Tharion - I have to admit it was good to have him around, he did save Lidia (and Sathia) in the end. But his storyline just seemed a little over all over the place, jumping from River Queen to River Queen, with neither of them really being threats in the end...also he randomly marries Sathia but then she leaves him, not sure what the point was.
Ithan I like a little better, but wth happened with Sigrid? If he hadn't had the thought that she could be his mate at the end of HoSaB I wouldn't have been as surprised; I didn't care so much but just thought it was odd (and of course I felt bad for Ithan mostly). Was glad to see him work with Jesiba and Hypaxia and become Prime, and also the emotional scene with Connor of course.
And just so many side things that didn't seem so important like what was the point of the dragon?
[The end + bonus chapters]
I went into this book expecting someone (Bryce, Hunt, Rhun and/or Lidia) to die. I'm not sure why, because in ACOTAR that never happened. I think it was mostly theories I was reading/hearing, plus the fact that there is such an emphasis on the afterlife in this book. Bryce and Hunt ending up in the afterlife together was a situation I was prepared to accept.
I think it did make the end of the book more impactful for me because I seriously thought that Lidia was going to die - twice - as well as Bryce and was actually preparing myself for it. So when they didn't I was EXTREMELY happy and relieved - while also recognizing that maybe it would have made sense, especially with all the foreshadowing each of those characters had, numerous times, if one of them would have died (and it would have been super noble and heroic). But I am super happy they didn't. If I would have known this ahead of time, I probably would not have devoured this book in just 2 days haha.
That said, the Bryce death scene was kind repetitive to Feyre and Rhys'. (Also did the Jesiba x Bryce scene remind anyone else of Dumbledore and Harry?) Another thing: the whole Rhun handing the throne over to Bryce and giving her the sword and thus fulfilling the prophesy - did I miss something or did this not already happen in HoSaB?? They should have left it out of the previous book to make it more impactful here IMO.
The epilogue bonus chapters were so cute and fun and I loved that both couples got happy endings. And ending with JJ/pegasi was just...classic, I loved it, bringing everything full circle.
Speaking of the couples:
[Bryce x Hunt]
I love these 2 together, I don't know why so many people didn't think they were endgame when they're so totally head over heels for each other. I enjoyed their relationship in HoEaB the most, I feel like Hunt was sidelined a lot in HoSaB. I'm glad there was more teamwork and less secrets in HoSaF. I didn't feel like there was that much development for them as a couple in this book, but we did get some cute moments. Anyway they deserve each other and they deserve to be happy so I'm happy for them! :)
However: their sex scenes were...kinda odd. Like, I know, other-worldly stuff happens when mates have sex in these universes, but these seemed the most out-there, with the whole transfer of power and becoming Made? Ok then! (And the first scene was super short and rushed. )
[Rhun x Lidia]
These two!! When I found out who Day was, I was reacted to it just the same way Rhun did. But I came around to the idea (I think their sex scene was the best once in HoSaB by far) and going into this book I was the most excited for this couple. I do wish we had gotten a little more of them, which ties into my general comment about everything being so fast in this book and having so many side characters and povs but overall I liked what we got.
I do wish there had been a little more interaction in the dungeons, they also didn't make it so clear if Lidia was ever the one doing the torturing or if she was able to avoid this and if so, how? And of course because Rhun was blocking her out they couldn't really communicate... I was so glad she didn't die the first time because there was so much left unresolved. Her having children was a surprise but I think it explained why she did what she did and showed how pure her intentions were.
Post rescue, I didn't completely understand the way she was acting around Rhun, like she was mad at him for being mad at her (even though I think she could have understood he needed time to process?) and then thinking he was only interested in her because she had kids? idk. But I loved them getting closer together while in Avallen, and them just holding each other that first time. Then that scene in the barn LOL. And I'm glad we got to see them finally be together the night before the final battle.
And then for the second time I was really glad she didn't die because she was back to hating him lol. Again, I was sure she was not going to make it but I am really really happy that she did (and I'm glad she got to be the one to end Pollux), and I LOVED their bonus chapter as well. I also loved Bryce and Lidia's friendship and how they are all neighbors now!
I realize I shared a lot of criticisms but overall I did really enjoy this book and the HEA is a major bonus so I rated it 4 stars!

BTS?
And also, because you know I can’t help myself: The Million Dollar Question. The question being what does Lucius do after the last time we see him in the fic? I adored his final interactions but… please tell me he’s happy 😭
BTS: I’ll write a DVD commentary about my personal favorite passage
how am I suppose to pick one favourite 😭 I'm gonna go with the opening passage of chapter 23, I don't know if it's my fave but it's def one I can talk about
---
This plot point was one that has always floated around from very early on. I first came up with Abbie 12 years ago, and initially she was a love interest for Draco. (I did think about keeping that element initially, but I think it was around the time I was writing chapter 4 that it came to me that Abbie was gay.) One of the scenes that formed in my head in the early days was that by the time of this battle, Abbie and Draco would have slept together a couple of times. Lucius would know of this and at some point in the battle, he would mimic the way Hermione was marking the doors they'd been through with an X, and mark Abbie across the torso with an X.
By the time I got to chapter 23, that idea was obviously way out of the window (not least bc Lucius would never slutshame 😂) but I did like the idea of Lucius attacking Abbie and leaving a scar, thus this scene was born.
Tumblr media
Initially, this second paragraph began with "Somehow, he did." but I realised that was an unnecessary detail, plus it reeked too much of "Somehow, Palpatine returned."
The room that Abbie hides in is meant to be Sephy's office, which is why Lucius is able to find her, but I couldn't really figure out a way to work that detail in so I left it out.
I actually read this passage aloud for @snapecentric's podcast, and it was very fun to read out Lucius being a nasty lil bitch. I enjoyed reading it out but I don't know if I could do a podfic for the whole thing, I'd be too embarrassed to read out the sexy bits.
Tumblr media
In case it's not obvious, she casts a patronus to send to Snape for help. The whole point of the previous scenes of him teaching her to do it was for this exact moment.
The last bit was plagiarised by some rando at some point, they posted it and changed Abbie to Y/N. It was hilarious 'cus they literally put it in the gen tag, where I live, and didn't expect me to recognise my own writing?!
I don't know why I'm so obsessed with Snape carrying Abbie like this, but I am. I also loved paralleling it with Abbie carrying him the same way after Nagini's bite. 😀
The Million Dollar Question - what happened to Lucius?
FINE. I should have known you'd make this about Lucius somehow 😂 If you must know, he and Narcissa divorce very amicably. They still meet up often, and they co-grandparent Scorpius when he's born. And just because it amuses me, Lockhart makes a full recovery from his addled mind and gets together with Lucius. When gay marriage is legalised, they have the most Extra wedding the wizarding world has ever seen.

3, 5, 14, & 26 for any pair you wanna answer the questions for.
; u; thank you for this Mint!!! I'm going to go with my 🐍x🐧 because you already know I have DC brainrot right not. OTL
3. What was their first impression of each other?
So the verse I have them is G*tham at the 10-year time skip, so he's been out of Blackgate for maybe 6 months now? Either way for Sophie she felt he was just... Washed up LMAO. But that's because I have Black Mask, Two-Face, and such in power in my au whatever thingy. So he's the bottom of the barrel, for now. So she's not impressed or really fearful but is wary because time and time again he's shown to fucking survive everything and crawl back to the top. For him, I'm pretty sure he just thought she was nothing LOL. Like a lackey of Black Mask and that's it. He's quicker than her though and sees she's a useful pawn though when they talk more. So first impressions were not favorable at all.
5. Do they argue often? If so, what do they argue about?
In the beginning, they did. A lot. But that's because [honking noise] has always been temper prone and just wants everything to go his way. And it sort of centered around how he wants her to get on his team to take back his 'Empire', as he was The King of G*tham. Also, she's not someone that likes to be bossed around, especially by a brat of a man. She's put up with Black Mask so to her 🐧 isn't someone she feels the need to put too much energy into an argument with. But when they actually do finally get together arguments don't happen too much since they think kinda think similarly about things; business is a good example.
14. Do they enjoy PDA, or are they more private with affection?
I think they both do on a certain level. Sophie is more open, especially emotionally so she has no problem being kissy and touchy- She wants to be desired because she'll defiantly show desire to her SO, which is [foghorn noise] in this case. He on the other hand takes a lot longer to be okay with it. He sees it as weakness, or likes to think of it as weakness especially because of it happening to him so many times in the past that it did end up being a sort of weakness. So it's more private for them both since he's uncomfortable. Also, they both have to keep up appearances, although probably in the future if they're together for a long time they'd be the couple that has no problem kissing right in front of the henchmen. But that's a LONG time in the making.
26. What sacrifices do they make for the other?
This one I think is easier for me to describe with Sophie since she has a lot to lose. She's technically part of Black Mask's territory, or her club is. So for her to betray Black Mask just to get on 🐧 team she's asking for trouble and all her employees and everyone that works for her on her own little plot she has on his territory. But she does eventually go to [redacted]'s team because she feels he's better than Roman. So she has to figure out how to keep her employees and club safe as their boss since she wants to act up and be disloyal just for a dumb bird lkafjwelr But for him? Maybe changing his plans around for her? He's set on getting G*tham back but after meeting her AND getting feelings for her he's had to change his timeline or adjust it. Because he's still going to do what he wants and crawl back to the top, but now he's going to do it with her at his side so he needs to add a plus+ one and think about her feelings and her position. He can't be as selfish.

4, 6, 12, 19 please tell us about Minah, 27, 30, 37, 49, 61 and 65 for Concubinage, and 74
4. How do you choose which fics to write?
ig it depends on how obsessed my brain is with the random plot bunnies hopping around in my head? When I start thinking up narration sentences, that's when I know a particular idea wants to be written. Doesn't mean I always do it, though (in an ideal world with infinite free time, maybe...)
6. What’s the last line you wrote?
I haven't written in so long I don't even remember 😭
Looking at one of my latest wips, probably this one because it's incomplete lmao:
The room was as dingy as the rest of the inn and smelled vaguely of stale tobacco, but at least the bed was soft and the sheets were clean. He collapsed on the bed with a sigh of relief, head swimming from all the
(wtf was I trying to say? it's a mystery 🤷‍♀️)
12. Do you outline your fics?  If yes, how detailed are your outlines?  How far do you stray from them?
Usually not, and then it comes to bite me in the ass when it's ten months since I plotted the idea and I don't remember what I was planning to do 😅
There's one fic that's an exception cuz it's a fusion AU type of thing so I'm planning carefully how it follows (or not) the original's plot. Well, idk if I'll actually write the fic actually, maybe in this case the outline will be all there is, as a fun exercise for myself XD
19. Do you enjoy creating OCs or do you prefer to stick solely to canon characters?
I love creating OCs, but like, they need a purpose. An OC just for the sake of having an OC or self-insert isn't my kind of thing (no shade to those who do, I'm just not wired that way), but depending on the story I might need to flesh out a supporting cast. And I love it when they slowly take life and develop.
Minah was a really fun case because she was supposed to be a kind of "throwaway" role, only there for a scene or two. She wasn't even planned like she turned out to be (I originally imagined her younger, for example). But then she... just happened lol. Within a few lines of her dialogue I was in love with her and she was just so fun to write, in a way she wormed her way into a bigger role than intended and I'm really glad she did because it works out so well in so many ways. Funny how things go sometimes 😂
honestly my OCs often end up surprising me in one way or another haha. rare are those who stick to the plan
(rest under cut cuz it's getting long)
27. What area of writing do you feel strongest in?
Battle scenes, apparently 8)
30. How much do you edit your fics?  Do you edit as you write or wait until you finish the first draft?
I actually... don't edit that much 😅
ig in a way I edit in my head before I write? I've always been like that tbh, even at school--what I write down (whether fic, essay, translation...) is often very close to the final version. Of course I go over it a couple times once I'm done and tweak a few things here and there, but it's usually minor stuff. Sometimes I end up redoing entire scenes/chapters because I feel something's not working, but it's rather rare when it happens.
37. What fic has been the hardest for you to write?
Probably Fractured Lives? There's a reason it's only gotten five updates in nine years so far. I have to be in a very specific mood to write it, which doesn't happen often. A pity, cuz I liked the concept...
49. What fic of yours would you say is the best introduction to you as a writer?
I'd say The Best Laid Plans. It's got my particular brand of humor, and also some kickass battle scenes :p
Another one would be Strong Currents, cuz worldbuilding (plus getting Gaius and Wingul to have emotional talks lolol)
61. In Concubinage, what’s your favorite scene that you wrote?
Probably Lin and Arst's first kiss. It's such a significant moment<3
65. If you wrote a sequel to Concubinage, what would happen in it?
I am actually vaguely planning a sequel if I can finish it. Basically it'd be the events/plot of the game, but with all the changes in settings brought about by the events of Concubinage. I'll have to think carefully about what will change, what will stay the same, and what will be a slightly different spin on things that'll still happen. I think the main difficulty will be to juggle Milla's journey with Gaius&Wingul being the main characters without them overtaking the plot. And also how close or different it should be to canon...
74. Do you have a fic you wish got a bit more love?
Among my least kudosed ones, I'd say Chaos in the Ballroom (my Tales Big Bang fic). I know it's a bit different from my usual stuff, and relies heavily on knowledge about Agria's side story, but I put a lot of thought in that one.

Are you okay?
Hello.
I'm a little stressed?
It's kinda stupid, honestly.
I start school on Monday, right? And it's my first year in college, I'm doing deaf studies and interpreting for ASL. I thought it would be good to learn asl, since I struggle to hear anyways.
Also, my therapist thinks I have autism? We're not gonna try to get a diagnoses, because that could very well be upwards of 5k, and I don't have that to throw around, yknow? But he strongly suspects, and I don't know what to do about that.
I have classes Monday and Wednesday in person, plus homework. Tuesday is my allotted online day, PLUS the one day with a flexible schedule I'll have to run any errands I may need to do. Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, I'm WORKING, 8 to 4. After that is any other homework I need to get done, plus all my household chores, and maybe some smaller errands, like shopping.
On top of that, my partner just like. Doesn't respond? We had plans today and tomorrow we made a couple weeks ago and I was trying to confirm and it's been EIGHT HOURS, and no response. I try to be patient, but this is a regular thing. I get he stays up most of the night and sleeps the day away, but it's 8:15 pm and NOTHING. He finally responds at 8:30 saying his phone is on the fritz and he got around it by connecting his number to his laptop. Which I can understand but I was half ready for HOURS. He couldn't have checked in earlier??
I'm not gonna HAVE any time off, I'm not gonna HAVE a day. And that in off itself stresses me out! Between school and work and homework and errands and chores, I'm either going to have time for sleep or a personal time. I can alternate between those well enough, I'm 18, almost 19, and I've got enough stamina to give up on sleep a couple nights a week. I won't be especially energetic, but I'll be able to function.
And I've been trying so hard to just WRITE, because I'm RUNNING OUT OF TIME. I've got ideas, LOADS of ideas, I'm up to the BRIM with them! And I'm not gonna have any time to write, this is my last chance, but I just CANT?
And you've sent me asks, I've seen them, I've thought about them, ive got stories, and then they just rot in my inbox, because I can't even START them. And do you know how many blurbs and thoughts and COMPLETELY FORMED STORIES I just need to actually WRITE? Like the Tristan reblog, do you know how much I want to add to that, but I can't pump anything out? I've got this great idea for the "by the way your best friends your mother" reveal. And I've got a big bro zel au I'm so PROUD of, and I want to share it with @demonprincezeldris but I've only got one section written, which I submitted WEEKS AGO AND WAS RESPONDED TO ALREADY. It was supposed to be a three part, and I've got the whole plot there, spent ages muling it over and hammering out every detail.
Then there's what I've got on A03. Did you know there's someone who thought I stopped writing Vorago because I didn't like their idea? That's not it at all! I LOVED their idea! But I couldn't even respond to their COMMENT, because what do I say?? "No, I stopped writing after you gave me this idea because I'm paralyzed staring at Google docs." And it was months ago, anyways! And I've got a bunch of others there that people want more of!
And I just. Can't. Write. No matter how hard I try. What I actually manage to force out is jilted and cringy and awful, and I will absolutely not publish that. It's almost worse than my WATTPAD ERA!
Almost. Those were dark days.
Im just so frustrated, because I'm OUT OF TIME, and I. Did. NOTHING. I'm not gonna have any time to write, even if I can, I'm not gonna have any time for a social life - that I barely had anyways - im not gonna have time for myself, im barely gonna have time to SLEEP. I feel like wasted what I had left.
Is this what it feels like to be an adult? I don't like it. I wanna be a kid again.

69, 44, and 25 for the writers ask
I need to get back to writing too, but in good news I'm getting a feel of character for one of them. Now if I only had a plot
we're doing it! getting back into writing together! thank you for the reverse directional asks i will do them exactly how you have asked
69. how do you write emotional scenes? do you ever feel what the characters feel?
if i'm coming into it Knowing that i want to write an emotional scene, usually there's music involved! i have a collection of sad and otherwise melancholy playlists (plus one that's just songs i think would fit well in those angsty last 3 minutes of a tv show episode before the cliffhanger) and they tend to serve me well; if all else fails i'll find the most recent mood-fitting song i've been repeating lately and loop it forever. (most recently has been doctor eleven by dan romer. was the only thing i listened to for my crw class submission and personally i think it turned out swell.)
as for feeling the characters, i don't think so? a lot of the time what i feel when i'm writing is just joy from writing, vague evil sentiment, or if it's Really A Lot To Handle, there'll be like, an ache. occasionally i do make myself cry but that's mostly for personal or original things, and less for fanfic. unless it's the annie chapter of bean's beans. but typically i am somewhat detached, which is actually kind of impressive considering my propensity for imprinting on literally everything. huh! i learn something new about myself every day.
44. any writing advice you want to share?
man i never know if there's any sort of sagely things i do that could be passed off as wisdom but. the best piece of advice i've read (on tumblr too i think) was that if you're stuck, it's possible that the problem is actually a couple lines back. usually i look between three paragraphs and half a page up to see what different choices i could make, and that tends to solve my problem more often than not. kind of magic, that.
in other sort of throwaway bits, i always start a fic creation process by opening a doc and just rambling onto it. no proper prose, just as though i'm having a conversation with the empty page. it's helpful both to get my ideas in order and to have a place to come back to if need be - it's easier to toss the ball around if the net's already there, yknow? also, if for some reason microsoft word isn't doing it for me, i find fighter's block to be good for dumping out words, and zenpen has carried me through several terms of creative writing assignments and also poetry so take that as you will.
25. what's your revision or rewriting process like?
would you laugh at me if i said i don't edit my fics. this is not necessarily true in that i don't consider what i post to be rough in any way, but when it comes to fic especially i'm a big first-one-done kind of guy. that being said: i reread my work a lot. a lot a lot. and often times i will pick up little things that need fixing, line edits or weird repetitive things, so i do find it helpful. also the read-aloud function on word has been great to me. and i make frequent use of the comment function in word, which has been exceedingly useful when it comes to the fact that i haven't yet figured out the whole timeline of fixed point so some of the dates are just "FIGURE THIS OUT LATER" and "IS THIS TRUE?".
and of course sharing with other people :) coming from creative writing seminars i've realised (? finally understood? i don't actually know how much of an enlightenment it was but it was something) how useful it is to get someone and just say, hey, tell me how you interpret this, are there any questions you still have, god forbid did i leave any gaping plot holes. this comes in especially handy because in MY brain i know all the answers, and sometimes they forget to worm out onto the page. this again has just happened in my current seminar, so rest in peace to the quest plot i tentatively thought i could maybe go without describing (for wordcount's sake) but apparently not. it is cool and fine.
anyway happy tuesday and also thank you!

❥︎ The Queen’s Deceit • Ikemen Prince fanfiction
DISCLAIMER;
1. I don't own any of the ikepri characters and surroundings here, just my OC whom I created just for this purpose!
2. This is my first writing here and on top of that my first English writing! It's not my first language so there could be typos, and grammatical errors (as I'm still kind of learning the language) — in case this happens please tell me, I'm quick to fix them and make better quality!
3. Last, but not least is the story itself and some characters' personalities. Since the plot doesn't follow after our MC in the game, things can be different! Also, some elements were completely invented by me, so please keep an eye out for that too! (Plus, there could be spoilers for some routes.)

• Chapter IV.
Tumblr media
"-So you are the attendant Sariel told me about! And he assigned me to help you, at least in the first couple of days. Welcome, Artina!" When I finally reached the other side of the palace, I quickly found the butler to whom it was recommended to enlighten me about more things regarding my newly-found job here in Rhodolite.
It turned out that he's actually the new Belle's personal butler and hasn't been long in the palace either. But then again, he seems good at his job, seeing that the strict minister trusted him with this task.
"That must be such a challenging job, with all eight of them! Although I'm here only for a month, you can ask me too if you need any help. I'll gladly lend a hand, be it anything!" The new Belle - or Emma, as she introduced herself to me - gave me a supportive and enthusiastic smile while offering her assistance as well.
She really does have a pure heart. I would probably never do anything favorable for another person if I'm not getting something back... Oh well, cultural differences, I guess.
"Thank you, too. It means a lot. Only with you guys' encouragement, I'm much more confident about this job early on. Although it depends on the princes too." At my last remark, I laughed, and they chuckled too.
"That's for sure. I've been here for almost a week now, but there are still princes I can't seem to figure out, or I only see them quite rarely throughout the day. Maybe I should accompany you at least, and I would get to see and understand all of them better." Emma added, clearly determined.
She takes her responsibilities seriously, I see. The people can trust her then that she will choose the most fitting out of the princes, to be the king in the future. Good for them... if only it worked out like that in Obsidian too. Everything would be different.
"Since you have a lot to catch up on about your work, why don't we go somewhere more pleasant to discuss?" Rio - the butler - suggested with a small smile and gestured to one of the staircases, cornering the corridor we were standing by.
"Let's go to the garden! I'm sure you will like the flowers there! They bloom all year, and you can't get enough of their beauty!" Emma's eyes sparkled, and with that, they began to show me the way to the even more spacious castle gardens than ours back in Obsidian.
Basically, after that rushed morning meeting with the minister and the princes, my day passed peacefully, and I spent it with Belle and her butler. They kept me company and didn't abandon me, and for that, I was somewhat grateful since I still needed to learn my way around the palace.
Also, they warned me multiple times that my job won't be easy... Not that I expected it to be.
But starting from tomorrow, serving breakfast to the royals, I'm really doing this. It's been only two days since I fled from Obsidian's walls, and I can't help but wonder what is going on at home. I wouldn't call it homesickness - for now - since it's even quite pleasant being a long distance away from the castle and even the country's borders.
I just have this silly idea; what if, after some time, here I will forget the darker, chaotic reality of my situation and position in this world... and our empire?
Tumblr media
...Well, this is indeed odd. Are the others still sleeping, or are they not hungry?
"Watch your step! You almost knocked the plate out of my hand just now!" Another attendant's voice woke me up from my daydream, while we were serving breakfast to the royals.
Or, just only one of them, at the moment.
Prince Yves was the only one who came down to the exquisite and commodious dining room early in the morning to eat.
I had no clue about the others as I was genuinely surprised by their lack of presence, but the other servants didn't seem to care since they were constantly bringing tons of food to the table, restless.
Will the others eat it later, for lunch? Do they like late breakfast, or what?
Where I come from, food is a luxury, and even we in the castle can't and shouldn't afford such measures for a simple meal throughout the day.
Do they not appreciate the people - including us - working for their sake?
The more I thought about it, the more my blood was boiling, but I knew better than to cause a scene and raise suspicion.
...You're not in Obsidian, Artina. Get used to it, and swallow it for now.
"Prince Yves, may I ask where are your brothers and why don't they intend to come for breakfast?" On the other hand, I needed to hear some kind of answer to - one of - my burning questions. Surely he knows something since he's been living with them for years.
Meanwhile, I put his plate in front of him, waiting for an answer before heading back.
"Some of them eat breakfast later or oversleep and eat at lunchtime. But it does not concern me... and I told you to call me Your Highness." He said, mumbling the last part without looking at me. Then elegantly picked up the cutlery and started to eat.
Is it because of their duties? But Yves is here, though... Or maybe it just depends on the day?
I really shouldn't think about this too much. I'm just causing a useless headache for myself and my thoughts.
"-Why are you still standing here?" Now he looked into my eyes, seeming annoyed just by my mere presence.
"Well, I was also going to ask if you need help with anything? Any casual matters or duties?" I said quickly, so I don't embarrass myself, clearly zoning out again.
"...I suppose you are not as useless." He huffed, then tossed me a small piece of paper with delicate, legible handwriting.
I scanned it with my eyes for a brief moment and realized these are numerous ingredients for foods. Again, nutrition. Just when I want to erase it from my thoughts.
"Go to town and get me all of these by the afternoon. It shouldn't be too hard, so you better not mess it up." He addressed me sharply, and I only nodded, then left him alone.
That's right, this shouldn't be too challenging; I only have to do some shopping.
Tumblr media
"I'm beyond flattered that you decided to join us in such early hours in the morning, Lady Artina." Clavis smiled, sitting across from me in the carriage.
I literally didn't have a choice since you guys half-dragged me up here, but yes, I'm beyond flattered too.
"And this maid outfit suits you and your body quite nicely- if I might add." I looked to Nokto beside the purple-haired one, rewarding me yet again with a sly smile and a flirty tone.
...Don't even get me started on this dress; it's not even functional enough. It's only for pleasing the eyes, but wearing it gets quite the hustle.
"Although I prefer women showing their legs more, I think this dress still covers too much." Come on, Clavis, don't play along..!
"The more skin exposed, the better for me. I think the neckline could show a little bit more." Nokto added again.
"I don't think you should tease Artina on this." Said Luke from beside me, in a defensive tone. "Don't worry, they are not serious though." He turned to me with sincerity and kindness in his eyes and smiled.
"-But I might add too that I like ruffles, so more of them would be kind of nice, I guess." He confessed, at last.
"Oh, so you like the cute types then, Luke?" Nokto pushed on the topic even more.
Never mind about defending. Also, why is Prince Chevalier's faction telling me about their ideal types of maid outfits? And where's Chevalier himself anyway? I'd like to imagine that at least he would make them quiet.
"Might as well, don't you guys want to tell me Prince Chevalier's preference? Seeing that all of you are eager to share your own, schamlos." I blurted out, not watching the way I phrased the sentence.
"Huh? What was that last word you said?" Luke asked, confused.
...I know that my rule in life is that 'If nobody's going to do it, then I will.' but I didn't quite mean it to blow my cover when I thought about it at first!
At least I'll save other people the time and energy of investigating me, as it's been proven that I'm not good at hiding my identity!
Never mind; now that my speech backfired, I might as well save myself too.
"Shameless, if you want it spelled out. I just got tongue-tied for a second because of your teasing." Yeah, it sounds like a valid excuse, way to go.
"You get tongue-tied interestingly." Clavis chuckled.
I looked elsewhere, sighing, and finally felt the carriage take off.
At least, that saves me from witnessing or creating more embarrassing and suspicious moments for myself, and from now on, I will be just concentrating on the scenery that is rushing past us at a fast pace.
That way, maybe I will forget this weird exchange as soon as possible.
"By the way, we are going to the center of the town, right?" I asked hesitatingly after a couple of minutes.
"Yes, we have some business there." Nokto answered curtly, now his attention occupied by some papers lying in his hands.
I faintly nodded - not that he would see it since he was focusing on something entirely different.
...At least I'm going where I'm supposed to.
Tumblr media
The sun was shining high and bright on me that forenoon, and I was having a good time shopping and navigating through the town center.
I'm on my own in a foreign country, which is, moreover, enemy territory for me. I should be wary and uneasy, but I'm not.
As the mighty lightning orb in the sky was hinting at everything in a pure golden glow, it hinted away my worries too for a couple of hours.
For the first time it didn't feel like I was that much different from the ordinary townspeople. Everyone - including me too - was just enjoying the sun and good weather, it was that simple. I felt the same familiar feeling that they could be feeling as well. Ordinary... feelings that they must have felt. Yeah, it's been so long since I've felt ordinary, - or normal at all. Never before.
But as my small journey slowly came to a close, the heavy bags in my hands weren't the real things that weighed me down at that moment. Rather, they were my thoughts and my mind.
I kept comforting myself while I traveled back to the palace, now in silence since the three princes had an entirely different business from mine in the center. But I didn't miss them; I was grateful for the peaceful silence until I was back in the lions' den.
After I arrived safely at the palace, I immediately headed for the master kitchen to set the numerous ingredients there.
I was sure that Prince Yves wouldn't like me to deliver the shopping bags to his room, although the face he would make might be funny and worth it.
But I knew better than that and still chose the kitchen to safely pack away the flour, eggs, and baking oils.
I wonder why he needed so many of these? Did he request it for the servants in secret? Because right now, I can't imagine what he, alone, would do with loads of baking supplies.
Tumblr media
The following morning I was weirdly relieved to see more than just one royal sitting at the dining table, eating breakfast.
Other than Prince Yves, Prince Leon and Prince Jin was also seated close to the younger, pompous prince.
Prince Leon already had a plate in front of him, so I went to Prince Jin, hoping to serve him some real food... Seeing that he was fiddling with a lollipop's wrapping.
"Good morning, Prince-" I quickly realized my mistake before cutting my sentence short. But I already captured his attention, and he was looking at me and listening, now with a small but pleased smile. "Sorry, I meant to say Jin. Can I serve you some breakfast?" I automatically looked down at his lollipop, which he was still fiddling with. I hope he notices my intentions.
"Morning, Artina! Yesterday I didn't even see you in your adorable maid dress! I must say it fits you well." He complimented me with a broad smile, and before speaking again, he popped the - now wrapping-free - lollipop in his mouth. "About breakfast, don't strain yourself. I rarely eat breakfast in the mornings. But I enjoy seeing my brothers get their bellies full. Why don't you too, join us instead? It's the best when everyone eats together in a lively space, don't you think?" I suddenly found myself considering his offer with a good feeling accompanying it in my stomach. Fair enough, I was indeed hungry.
"Very well then. If that's your wish." I gave in and sat down, opposite Prince Jin and pulled a plate of food in front of me.
"Lady Artina, good morning! It's good to see you're eating with us too." Prince Leon greeted me, a couple of seats away.
Yves at the other side of the table, opposite Prince Leon, just silently grumbled something, but I took it as a greeting too.
"Much better. See? That's what gets the people bonding." Jin laughed, still completely satisfied with his lollipop.
...He wants me to bond already?
I let him be, didn't wanted to force anything, and started to eat quietly.
"Oh, also, I almost forgot to thank you for yesterday's feast!" Prince Leon rose from his seat a couple of minutes later, indicating that he had finished his meal.
"Excuse me? I didn't put together any kind of feast. I just went shopping in the morning-" I was slightly confused about what he was trying to imply.
"Well, without your shopping, Yves here probably couldn't have made his delicious desserts for us in the faction room by the evening! We were celebrating some recent accomplishments, and he was so generous that he baked for us again!" Jin exclaimed proudly, patting his brother's shoulder by stretching out over the several empty chairs separating them.
Wait... So Prince Yves bakes? Furthermore, he bakes desserts? I admit I didn't expect that, but that's such an adorable gesture!
"Well, I'm glad to be of help, always!" I smiled genuinely at the end.
Why do I feel giddy all of a sudden? This is just a conversation at breakfast.
"-You don't have to tell it to every single breathing creature in this castle, you know. It was just a small gesture, nothing more." Yves looked up, scolding his older brother hastily, but I saw that his ears turned a bright shade of red because of our exchange.
"Don't be shy, we enjoyed it very much. And we're always looking forward to your dainties!" Leon added, smiling at the younger one, and went to pat his head too.
I just quietly enjoyed the brothers' interaction from my seat while munching on my breakfast.
It was nice seeing them being friendly with each other, it lifted my mood too. It also made me suddenly remember my own family, especially my brother.
It's not like we used to be like this... we were never that friendly around each other, it was more like respect and a strong sense of trust, but nonetheless, these were the kind of moments I appreciated with Gilbert while we were younger.
Good memories, I suppose.

1, 5, 9, 10, 11 for the fic ask
1: What inspired you to write the fic this way? - a couple of things. First, I liked the idea of exploring the similarities and contrasts between Hiro, Varian, and their stories. I also liked the idea of giving Varian a support group and actual friends. The second was the pandemic. I got really bored during locked down which motivated me to finally try my hand at writing. Finally, as the final seasons for each show finished airing the more frustrated I got with a lot of the creative decisions made for each, and so decided to turn my crossover fic into a fix it fic as well.
5: What part was hardest to write? - I had a lot of trouble getting Varian and Gogo's argument in Faith and Fire right. He kept scaring her too much and I had to tone things down.
Also more recently, the song that Varian and Rapunzel sings in the Halloween episode was really intimidating. I avoided it for ages before just biting the bullet and churning something out. I still haven't wrote any actual music for it and I'm sure the lyrics will have to be tweaked whenever I do.
9: Were there any alternate versions of this fic? - Oh there were a lot of changes made in the concept stage. For starters, it used to be much shorter. LOL Second, there was far less subplots and focus on the secondary characters. The first draft was solely focused on Varian and Hiro's brotherly relationship. Also early versions had Varian and Karmi dating, while Hiro got with Megan, in a pair the spares way of resolving the show's love triangle. And Tadashi coming back was added late into the story development process. Last off, there wasn't any rating in mind when I was working on the first outline. Some episodes were a lot darker then they wound up being... like the drinking arc. Where Varian would have struggled with alcoholism, pstd, and suicide throughout the story. Instead this got reduced into just one episode about the dangers of underage drinking, while his pstd manifests in slightly less destructive ways.
10: Why did you choose this pairing for this particular story? - There's so many pairings and potential hookups in this series that don't know which ship we're taking about here. I'll just talk about Gogo and Tadashi, since they're the only official couple in the fic that aren't cannon to the source material. Basically, you can potentially ship Tadashi with any of his friends, and plenty of people do. Every possible combination exists in the BH6 fandom, because he gets about the same amount of screen time and interaction with all four of them... which is to say none of them because he dies shortly after introducing them to Hiro, in terms of movie scenes that is. Like it's 'here's my friends', and then three scenes later he kicks the bucket. He spends zero one on one time is any of them and we the audience are just supposed to assume he has relationships with all of them. Part of my goal for the story was to bring some more depth to those relationships, because while Hiro is the main character the world doesn't and shouldn't revolve around his perspective alone. As for why I decided to pair him with Gogo specifically when any of the four college kids would do? Well you can blame Kingdom Hearts for that. In the game, when Hiro tells Sora about Tadashi's death, the camera focuses only on Gogo and no one else. Not Hiro who is telling the story, not Sora who is hearing the story, not Baymax, Tadashi's creation that he left behind, and not any of the other BH6 who are busy chilling with Donald and Goofy. Just Gogo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's such an odd presentation choice that my mind immediately went, 'Wait, was there something between Gogo and Tadashi?'. Since then I couldn't get the idea out of my head, and so far it's proven a useful plot device for conflict and character development. Plus they're cute together.
11: What do you like best about this fic? - Found family, hurt and comfort, actual pay off for plot points, and most important of all the character development. I think true, believable character progression is missing from both shows, which is a tragedy giving how much potential each of them had. Now add in the fact that both TTS and BH6 are meant to be coming of age stories, and that lack of development winds up dooming them both. This fic is so long and indulgent because I'm giving myself everything that I wanted to see in the official source material and didn't get. I like to think that is something that others would like to see was well, so I've been sharing it. So thank you to everyone who's given feedback on the story. You interest keeps me going.

I feel like talking about books! but "book I'm currently reading" does not accurately reflect the situation so uh
book I am technically in the middle of but suddenly it's been a couple weeks since I actually opened it: Ruthless Ladies' Guide to Wizardry (it's not that I don't like it! It's that I hit a scene with a dead cat and went "nope not before bed we're not" and the dead cats are in fact a plot point so momentum has not been regained. Also while a standalone I loved Unnatural Magic, the previous book in this world, so much, the different mood of this one has an uphill climb in my heart)
book I've been reading super slowly because it's short stories and I'm savoring each one but I'll also then forget I'm reading it and it'll wind up buried in my to-be-read: Dying with Her Cheer Pants On (I mean to finish this month as tis the spooky season and delaying a read for the right season is also a thing I do)
series reread I started for a new release & petered out on: somehow i still haven't read Rule of Wolves (I was overdue for a complete Grishaverse reread to appreciate it properly but my copy of the 3rd book in the original trilogy is on ye olde nearly-defunct first gen Nook plus I had loaned my copy of Six of Crows at the time, and... oh boy that was April 2021 when the show was first coming out, wasn't it, whoops)
book I thought I finished and then realized at Barnes & Noble honestly can't remember if I did so I better check before I pick up the sequel: The Ex Hex
book I keep meaning to read because 'everyone's read it' but I haven't made it past page 3 yet: Where the Crawdads Sing (haven't seen the movie either because I'm theoretically? going to read the book first)
last book I finished: The Atlas Six (finally got around to it just in time for the sequel to hit soon so will be reading that soon enough)
last book I bought and still haven't started because this is what I let happen when not under a library deadline: Her Majesty's Royal Coven
book I almost just bought because I want to read it immediately but I already have a hold on it at the library and realistically, would I get around to it before that hold omes through: The Golden Enclaves (I will ultimately buy this in paperback as I own the first two, but can I resist until my library hold or will I pull the lever on the e-book purchase for that instant gratification? tbd)
book sequel I almost bought because I own the first one and they'll look pretty together but I should be watching $ this month and also I already have a hold at the library: For the Throne
book that comes out today that I will have to acquire ASAP: Greywaren (I was listening to its playlist already last night but will need to invest some time & likely *emotions* here so may not start it quite as ASAP)
...this is not comprehensive, nor would it be even if I listed the books I've just checked out of the library that may get read before any of the above, but for the sake of assuring myself of my own sanity ahhhhh I think I'm stopping here.

2, 11 & 12 for the fic writer asks? ✨
Thank you~
2. Talk about a favourite comment you've received
Can I give a top 3? I'm just gonna give a top 3 because I like these comments for different reasons.
Tumblr media
See, I like this because it's giving honest feedback. I know I have a bit of a tendency to go a Mary Sue route. It was way worse in my early days of writing, but it can still shine through if I only write out the scenes where the OC would have a strong positive impact. Without weaknesses to balance it out, of course it'll look Mary-Sue-ish. What I also like is that they didn't insult me for it. They said they didn't like the stories but they also said it was alright. Then they told me what they liked better about Till Death Do Us part. Really great feedback, all in all.
Tumblr media
This is one I like because they told me what they liked about the story, like the concept itself and Lani's relationship with Ahsoka, then they even told me they liked my OC which... I will always absolutely adore you if you comment that, I really want people to like them. Finally, without realizing it, they gave me the solution to a plot hole: Why was Ahsoka nowhere around? Why wouldn't she finish Lani's training? Why would she allow them to be separated like that? The answer: Malachor. You see, I don't know anything about Star Wars Rebels except that Ahsoka appears in it, kicks the inquisitors' asses and then fights Vader. How that happened? No clue. What happened before and after? Also no clue. Because, get this, I knew those things from AMVs and edits. But this dear AO3 user just fixed my plothole by mentioning the planet Malachor and thus sending me into the rabbit hole that is Wookiepedia to find out what the deal with Malachor was.
And finally, the best comment I've ever had is by @takealookintheback - I know I didn't reply to it but that's because I was too amazed to say anything
Tumblr media
This has everything a good comment needs. Saying what you liked (with pinpointing the actual moments from the story which is just - chef's kiss), a good amount of chaotic energy, interest in what happens next - plus it's coming from the master who had the idea in the first place, so I couldn't be happier!
11. Who is your favorite character(s) to write about and why?
You're making me choose? How cruel! I don't really have a favourite. It depends on the hyperfixation I'm currently in. Mostly, it's my OCs and their significant others, if they have any. Or just generally the people they're really close with, if we're taking my aroace baby Lani, for example. Speaking of Lani: Sibling dynamics are also fun, maybe because I don't have siblings so I get to imagine having them through writing. But if I had to pic favourites, I'd have to say Jelena is somewhere up there, Gordon/Raevyn (chaotic sweethearts), Vicky/Newkirk (really interesting dynamic, even though I gotta say writing Newkirk's accent can drive me mad) and Lani with her siblings and/or Han.
12. What is your favorite theme/subject matter/trope/ship to write about? Why?
I kinda halfway just answered this, didn't I? I like sibling dynamics and couples that have some tension about them and I don't mean sexual tension, I mean tension like other people not approving of their relationship, differences in social standing, an interesting combination of personalities, maybe even physical difficulties... Also, people generally get hurt in my fics. The only time my characters are safe is in pure fluff stories, but even then the fluff might be someone caring for someone who got hurt beforehand. Generally, I really love symbolism and I've been known to throw Greek myth references here and there. I mean, my Data/Tasha story is called Pygmalion and Galatea, so... Other overarching themes would be trust, loyalty and expectations as well as what happens when the opposite is true, when trust gets hurt, betrayal and expectations that aren't met.

Finally finished Pathfinder Kingmaker! Clocked in at 158 hours. A full 20 more than Wrath of the Righteous. Unlike WotR I played on core difficulty and never had to drop it, more because of me than either game. I'm sure WotR gets spikier due to the epic levels thing going on, but I'd have to give it another go to see if it's actually that much harder. Biggest difference in difficulty for me was that this time I actually understood how to buff for each situation (on second thought, the 20 hour difference might just have been in buffing lmao, not really but, like fr).
Spoiler review below the cut
The story isn't quite on par with WotR, and the companions are nowhere near, but the diversity of the campaign was vastly vastly superior. From kobolds and trolls, to liches, to barbarian hordes, to fey, and really almost everything in between it felt like. I mean there were times where it really felt like peak rpg for me. Vordekai right into Armag was an insanely cool stretch. Compare that to WotR where its really one note, just demons and cults. From P:K to WotR there was a huge jump in quality basically across the board, except for that one drawback.
Speaking of characters, I didn't really connect with anyone except Ekun, Tristian, Harrim aaaand.... Kind of Jubilost? I liked others, Nok-Nok was good of course but had little depth, linzi I was sad to see die but she was a bit too earnest and glowing to not get on my nerves. I finished everyone's quest. ended up killing Jaethal at the end of hers (deserved, i was playing good). Tristians story was the best written, Harrims was compelling and how they let more and more depth to his philosophy drip in was good. Ekun had a great arc and good writing to his story too, probably the best actual positive change arc with how I played him. Have to say the voice acting on everyone was top notch. I'd be lying if I pretended Amiri didn't get old quick, and Octavia is not what I'm looking for in a relationship story and it felt like that's pretty much what she was only written to be so that got old too. Val was interesting but also felt like the writers were trying to say something but they weren't sure exactly what during the writing or they had a good arc and felt like it was too on the nose preachy so they muddled it idk, but it felt kind of all over the place with its point. Hated Reg, he was annoying and evil, Jubilost could have done with a more compelling story I didn't dig the bleaching and he also had no arc. The idea and arc behind Kalikke/Kinerah/Kaessi was awesome but underdelivered and i was kind of romancing them but their class wasn't useful enough to have them around that much or maybe I just didn't feel like putting in way more extra time figuring out how to get them to be great. I did like their story a lot, but then at the end I think there was a glitch and I couldn't recover them in the house and they didn't show up for the last battle. I loved how Tristian and Harrims plots made them seem mythical, Tristian tied into the main plot made him so awesome.
I played mostly with a party of Ekun (and Okbo! Got to be great friends with my panther) Val (fully buffed ended up with 68AC for the battle with the Lantern King) Octavia, Tristian, and Jubilost. Most substitutable was Jubilost because he was just extra DPS but his bombs not missing and being tripping made him indispensable at the end, plus great buffer. I played a Druid, the anti-Fey one, and it was great. Having 3 tanks was dope with my panther, Ekun, and Val.
To conclude, Pacing sucked and Kingdom management was the culprit it wasn't worth all that time for what it was. Companions were good enough with a couple moderately memorable ones. Main plot was good, might have been great with proper pacing because of how varied it was but it's impossible for me to give a better grade, definitely not top or anything because it wasn't really thematic or philosophical at all, but they weren't reaching for that. Mechanically it was absolutely top level. Got me to think deeply about my choices but play with some freedom, pushed me to try not to rest exactly the right amount, couldn't have asked for a better challenge - fun balance. Wont replay probably ever because I didn't feel like I missed anything and the kingdom management would be even more unbearable a second time. It felt decently reactive in the ending slides, but actively reactive... A little lacking compared to WotR or even something like Mask of the Betrayer and certainly not BG3 which is the goat in that regard. 158 hours well spent, didn't regret them, might inspire me to replay WotR but I probably should finish BG3 first at least once.
