As excited as I am for the PJO show I am going to ALWAYS beg people to pirate it!! Every single time!! I love the series just as much as anyone but I'm not gonna pay for these piles of shits!! Yes I'm also talking about Rick!! Him being "Neutral" about the Palestine Genocide is absolutely disgusting!! The idea that people don't care that innocent lives, including infants, are dying day by day is honestly concerning for them!
That being said there are many other authors who do support Palestine 100%!!!
. Andrew Joseph White - Author of "Hell Followed With Us" + "The Spirit Bares Its Teeth"
. Xiran Jay Zhao - Author of "Iron Widow"
. Aiden Thomas - Author of "The Sunbearer Trials" + "Cemetery Boys" + "Lost In The Never Woods"
All books are very Queer and POC also so you'll be supporting those communities as well!!
Please please please feel free to add any authors you can think of that support Palestine!! FREE PALESTINE 🇵🇸!!!
Man, one thing I really loved about Across the Spider-Verse was the way it portrayed its black characters. There were so many black characters who got to be there and just be themselves, having fun.
I always loved Miles Morales as a Black and Puerto Rican guy myself but seeing Spider-Byte, Jessica Drew, and Hobie was so surreal. This is the most represented I’ve ever felt by a piece of media.
Talia, singing to Damian in Arabic: Those who respect you, respect them back. If they do you wrong, drink their blood.
Steph: Respect the bis, or Red Hood will stab out your eyes.
Jason, with a knife: You wanna be Oedipus, motherfucker?
Tim: If you guys call me a short king one more time, I'm gonna grow more out of spite. You'll have no more fun nicknames and the only short I'll have is my comings.
Tim: And by that I mean not achieving goals, not the physical distance of my, uh...
I have never watched the Critical Role streams because frankly I don’t have the attention span to, but I have started reading the comics and I find this interesting.
At some point, they made a conscious decision to darken Vex/Vax’s complexion. I normally have mixed feelings about changing the complexion of characters, because usually you are changing the race alongside it, and I am tired of media making white characters poc instead of creating original poc characters with relatable experiences. In this situation though, it works entirely. Vex and Vax are biracial, and their experiences seem to be a clear representation of prejudice that the biracial community experiences.
Overall I really like that they are poc now, because it almost directly adds on to their story, or at least their relatability. I hope to see a lot more characters in media that are biracial and have similar experiences as they do.
Hey guys I’m on some 2000s highschool high feminine transmasc bs shit 2day. Idc abt ur opinions I only care abt my opinions and my opinion rn is this. I will defame and decimate these white men until they r completely and utterly unrecognizable and I will never be sorry. Sketches below!! 👇🏽
Just a reminder if you're writing a story of POC characters, especially native american characters, depicting us takes time and respect.
If they're in a modern environment, dont make them "normal" like white people are "normal".
Our cultures are very much alive and connected to us. It may be easy to give the characters long hair and a scene eating frybread, but tossing our culture when its not convenient isnt an option.
For example, the fanart and fanfic of Pavitr, aka spider India, whitewashed the hell out of him for convenience. Many ignored his connection to his culture in favor of a (colorist) feminine depiction of him in white centered beauty.
You need to understand how our cultures influence our way of life, and what culture you're representing.
It's not copy and pase from chad or Elizabeth, because our foundational upbringing shapes who we become. Please consider our cultures when writing poc and native characters.
Shadow and Bone is such an important show for representation, making people of many types feel seen and like they too could fit in a fantasy setting.
For example, nuanced South Asian and East Asian representation that's important to both the actors and the fans. Multiple disabled characters where their disability is only one part of them. Queer characters where their queerness isn't used for tragedy + a rare setting free of homophobia. That's just what I can think of off the top of my head, there's other rep too I'm sure. Also, see this article on queer representation in fantasy for a quote by one of the actors, Jack Wolfe, about how he felt to have a queer role on such a show.
Of course, as with many shows including diversity, Netflix cancelled it despite the data showing it was doing well. But we don't want to accept that, we want our rep back! So if you're reading this and haven't seen the show, please please consider signing to help us out (and/or watching the show, new viewers show demand for it to Netflix). We're at nearly 187,000 signatures so far and trying to get to 200,000 signatures this month, ideally by the time the billboard our fandom fundraised for goes up on January 22nd. We want to send a message to Netflix that shows like this are wanted, that they matter to people, and that we won't simply accept cancellation after cancellation of diverse shows
Riordanverse Characters Who Aren't White According to Book Canon
(So we should all stop pretending they are)
Leo Valdez: Mexican-American, intended to be POC
Piper McLean: Native American (Cherokee)
Reyna Avila Ramírez-Arellano: Puerto Rican, intended to be POC
Frank Zhang: Chinese-Canadian
Alex Fierro: Mexican-American, of Indigenous Ancestry
Sadie Kane: Mixed (half Black, half White),intended to be white-passing
The list of BIPOC characters is actually longer, but I'm including only the ones who are most likely to be potrayed as white and/or have their identity as POC ignored in fan works, like fanarts and fanfiction.
So, please, everyone, keep them the way they are, because it's important to have diverse characters in YA fiction, so don't take away what they mean.
As a fanfiction writer, there are so many ways you can get informations and potray their culture, appearance and identity in a respectful way. Get educated.
