I recently caught up with @findingyourrootscomic, which is great, please read it, anyway I felt inspired to do my own PMD-inspired nuzlocke and write a story around it. Not making a comic or fic though, it’s just for fun. I’m using this Fire Red randomized rom hack. Details below for anyone curious!
Since the pokemon encounters and battles are all randomized I had to set some clauses, namely I’m allowed to skip wild legendaries [otherwise it would be too easy] and am allowing 3 faints per pokemon before I box them. Also, abilities were set to random because why not, it’s actually kind of a massive pain in the ass though
The story is that George the makuhita [my starter, bold nature, has minun’s signature ability which is. complete shit] was mysteriously teleported away from his makuhita/hariyama tribe in Granite Cave and ended up in a strange post-humanity world where the sun never rises [because there’s no internal timer and the clock is always at midnight so its always dark *sad horn noise*]. George puts on a tough guy act, having been raised by fighting types and all, but internally he’s scared and homesick and cries a lot, and the only pokemon helping him are called Team Cuties, who are three friends from Mt. Moon; first, he met Pearly the clefairy [route 1, impish nature, forgot what her ability is but it gives better accuracy], then Gel the hattrem [route 22, serious nature, trades hp for power in bright light], and finally  Grimmy the gligar [Mt. Moon, rash nature, something to do with critical hits?]
Team Cuties and George [who is refusing to call himself a member of their team, for now] have to solve this teleportation mystery so he can go home!

my WIP UltraSun nuzlocke (sort of)
i've realised with my new laptop I can finally continue my ultra sun game on Citra! It's kind of a softcore nuzlocke. Basically it's got permadeath but instead of catching only one pokemon each route, I catch every pokemon on the route. HOWEVER, I can't switch up my team except for when someone dies, and when they do I have to pick the new team member with a random name picker.
My current team, and the story so far told by how everyone else freaking died under the cut:
I got pretty far, and I'm currently somewhere along the Poni Island questline, can't remember where exactly. Here is my current team:
Tumblr media
This is Snazzypants. Ever since they joined after I wiped to Totem Marowak and got an entirely new team, he's been hard carrying the run. His offensive power is starting to fall off in the later game, but fur coat is still OP.
Tumblr media
The second longest lasting member of the team, Drugs joined after I lost half my team to the first Guzma fight. He's not quite as bulky as Snazzypants, but great at making any opponents way less good at killing all my team.
Then we have these guys who are all kind of new:
Tumblr media
Jarvis 2 joined after I lost 4 members to Guzma at the Aether Foundation, Cole joined after I lost one member to Lusamine, Cerberus and 01000101 joined after I was careless while level grinding and lost a couple other recent arrivals.
Now for all the dead mons!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since there are so many of them, I'll just list their levels and how they died.
Wormy the Caterpie - lvl3 - lvl3 - died to Pursuit from a Zorua I was trying to catch
Spots the Ledyba - lvl3 - lvl17 - also got Pursuited to death from one of Hala's pokemon
Flump the Slowpoke - lvl7 - lvl19 - died once again to Pursuit on the way to Brooklet hill
Molly the Buneary - lvl2 - lvl22 - died to Totem Araquanid
Em the Spearow - lvl10 - lvl12 - died to Totem Araquanid, about half an hour after replacing Flump
Donald the Yungoos - lvl3 - lvl21 - didn't survive the mandatory Battle Royale
Tom the Torracat - lvl5 - lvl25 - put up a valiant effort against Totem Marowak, but fell in the end, sealing the fate of the rest of the team
Cable the Charjabug - lvl4 - lvl22 - one of the final two to die in the Totem Marowak massacre, they didn't stand a chance
Reese the Cottonee - lvl12 - lvl20 - the second one to die in the Marowak massacre, perhaps in a futile attempt to allow a safe switch in
Bobby the Abra - lvl7 - lvl13 - another life tragically cut short by the ruthless Totem Marowak
BetterWormy the Butterfree - lvl10 - lvl12 - I am sorry past me, but WHY was BetterWormy at the front of the party for ANY part of Kiawe's trial???
Not Kukui the Hawlucha - lvl10 - lvl10 - the second one to die to Totem Marowak, probably because past me was a dumbass who forgot to grind
Priscilla the Ekans - lvl9 - lvl11 - got caught up in a Butterfree sweep, how embarrassing
Capt Beaky the Wingull - lvl6 - lvl11 - another one lost to the sheer power of that freaking Butterfree
Jarvis the Pikipek - lvl3 - lvl10 - managed to get oneshot by Silver Wind at the start of the Butterfree sweep, congratulations!
Bruce the Zubat - lvl7 - lvl10 - I'll just post my live discord reaction to Bruce's death:
Tumblr media
Garfield the Meowth - lvl8 - lvl17 - Garfield died solely because of my own selfish greed. He was ready to evolve, but I denied him that. I wanted to wait until he was level 30, so he would learn Payday, and I wanted to keep making use of his Pickup ability which would be replaced with Fur Coat when he evolved. Fur Coat would have allowed him to survive that Wingull's Wing Attack.
Rocky the Crabrawler - lvl8 - lvl24 - Top tip! When fighting Salandit pay absolute fucking attention to your pokemon's health! They will Dragon Rage you and your pokemon will die!
Acrylic the Smeargle - lvl8 - lvl25 - sacrificed her life to give Snazzypants a clean switch in during the Totem Marowak fight
Clowny the Mr. Mime - lvl9 - lvl26 - sacrificed so Snazzypants could be switched out to get rid of his lowered defense during the Totem Lurantis fight
Orang the Mankey - lvl12 - lvl17 - got OHKO'd by Take Down
Donut the Alolan Raichu - lvl2 - lvl36 - Guzma's Golisopod made a big First Impression
Shrek the Mudsdale - lvl12 - lvl35 - got taken down by Bug Buzz during the first Guzma fight
Addie the Oricorio - lvl12 - lvl30 - Guzma's freaking Masquerain had Icy Wind too
Splat the Malamar - lvl4 - lvl39 - This guy was gonna be my Ultra Necrozma strat. I really wanted to try Topsy Turvy on it. I'd kept him safe in the back of my party since I got him after the Marowak Massacre. Unfortunately, I'd forgotten about Innards Out.
Capt Beaky 2 the Pelipper - lvl33 - lvl47 - I was fighting a double battle with some Aether people, and I thought I'd be smart and go for U-turn instead of just switching. Unfortunately someone was faster and had an electric move.
Gremlin the Sableye - lvl11 - lvl50 - one of the many lives claimed by Guzma's final battle
TotallyATree the Sudowoodo - lvl20 - lvl48 - got some good hits in, but couldn't survive until the end of the fight
Rosie the Bewear - lvl20 - lvl33 - Capt Beaky 2's replacement who managed to take down Guzma's Vikavolt before being taken down herself
Cerise the Tsareena - lvl22 - lvl49 - the final victim of Guzma's onslaught, which left only Snazzypants and Drugs alive
Tumblr media
Rex the Tyrunt - lvl15 - lvl33 - died to a crit Surf while I was training the 4 new pokemon
Dogrock the Lycanroc - lvl14 - lvl48 - got oneshot by a critical Moonblast during the Lusamine fight
Avi the Talonflame - lvl19 - lvl46 - died to Revelation Dance while fighting a dancer to get the focus sash
Rana the Lurantis (totem size) - lvl30 - lvl47 - died to Dizzy Punch while in green health
I wonder who's going to die next!

Will They/It/He Current Game: Pokemon Red
Nuzlocke Rules:
1. Only one Pokemon may be caught per route. If it faints or flees, no Pokemon may be caught for that route. 1a. Dupes Clause is in effect - Any repeat Pokemon caught in that game (or of the party transferred from the last game) do not count towards rule 1. 2. All Pokemon must be nicknamed. 3. If a Pokemon in the party faints, it is considered dead and must be released. 3a. No Pokemon of that evolution line may be caught in any game afterwards. 4. The max level of the Pokemon in the party must the max level of the next Gym Leader. If they exceed the level, they must be removed from the party until this Gym Leader is defeated. 4a. The maximum number of Pokemon in the party allowed during a gym battle is determined by how many the Gym Leader's has. 5. The battle style is "set." 6. No fleeing from wild battles. 7. Every game (up to Pokemon Ultra Sun) must be played in order. 7a. All Pokemon that make it into the Hall of Fame will be transferred to the next game in the series, though they are de-evolved and set back to level 5. 8. Rules are subject to change according to my whims. It's possible that other nuzlocke rules may be added for a particular game or that a randomizer may be used to switch up future games. 8a. Randomizer software has been used in order to: a) make impossible evolutions possible (ie Alakazam through leveling instead of trading) and b) make all Pokemon able to learn all HMs (for convenience's sake during navigation.)

Welcome to my Legends Arceus nuzlocke attempt!
Before I really get into it, let's go over the rules. In a basic nuzlocke, you only catch the first pokemon on each route, (and no dups unless the og had died), you have to nickname all your pokes, and if a pokemon faints you cannot use it anymore (considered dead). The issue here is how do I decide what a route is in Legends? Well, after consulting with some friends, it was decided that each named area on the maps counted as a route, and for each area I would pull up a list of all available pokemon in said area (I've gotten to Arceus in my og run, so there's nothing to spoil for me looking that up), and roll a random number generator. Each region can also generate rifts later in the game, and for those, it will be the classic "first pokemon I run into". Shiny pokemon are always game, but that rule became irrelevant for my run given I never got the ponyta mission.
Also, a few original rules due to the unique nature of Legends Arceus. Pokemon can attack you in this game, and npcs talk about how dangerous it is out there, so if any pokemon successfully knocks me out in any context, I consider it game over - I'm pokefood. There's also the Boss pokemon battles in this game. In those, I'm on the line, sure, but given I've played and beaten this game before, I need to make it more of a challenge. In addition to my life on the line in each boss battle, I have to use at least 2 pokemon in each fight as well. I bring these rules up because both become (painfully) relevant during this series.
So with all that out of the way, time to begin our tale.
Part 1: Bittersweet Beginnings
As I'm dumped into the world, I get my choice for the starters. In my og run, I choose fire, and this time, I go water, naming my oshawott Azure. Ridiculous amounts of tutorials later (Including where Azure demolishes Volo), I dump the 3 pokemon the game forces you to catch, and enter the Obsidian Fieldlands.
I quickly hit some nearby areas for more pokemons, and acquire a bidoof named Nutmeg, an eevee named Adapt, and a cascoon named Mom Shipton (a reference to a moth species). Nutmeg almost falls to my rival, but she pulls through to beat him, and Adapt narrowly finishes off Mai's munchlax. My first boss battle is coming, and I need to train. I catch a geodude named Diorite and a zubat I called Lilith. Mom evolves, and suddenly I have a team of six, and am feeling ok.
This is when I go into the first boss battle, against the alpha music bug. My plan is to use Mom Shipton for this - she's got higher defenses than the rest of my team (except for Diorite, but I'm hesitant to use him due to the bug having Absorb), as well as Aerial Ace, which should be super effective. The battle starts, and immediately that music bug uses Aerial Ace against Mom. She hits it back, and both Mom and the bug are below half health. And here's where I made my first mistake this run. See, (getting technical for a second), if the enemy pokemon can "see" a kill, they will always use the move that can kill. So, I assumed the music bug would use Aerial Ace again, so I decided to pivot into Diorite, and hope I could kill the bug in one move next turn before it could use absorb. However… in Legends, they added Strong style (which is a stronger but slower attack), and Agile style (which is a weaker but faster move). If a pokemon can see multiple ways to kill, like this bug could due to Strong style attacks, the attack chosen is random. So as I switched to Diorite… music bug used a Strong style Absorb. Diorite never stood a chance, and with that my first death happened. Frazzled, I use the opportunity for a free swap to bring in Lilith, whose speed and stab with Aerial Ace makes sure this bug goes down. The sun set as I buried Diorite, and I made camp. Day 2 will bring the Kleavor boss battle, and I'm not ready.
Upon waking up, it's time to grind. I catch some more pokemons, including Cordyceps the paras, who gets added to the team, and train hard, evolving both Azure and Nutmeg. I beat Lian and Irida relatively easily, and am prepared for the Kleavor battle, I hope. My team is currently:
Azure (Dewott), lvl 20
Nutmeg (Bibarel), lvl 18
Adapt (Eevee), lvl 18
Mom Shipton (Dustox), lvl 17
Lilith (Zubat), lvl 17
Cordyceps (Paras), lvl 15
Going into this, the two pokemon I'm using are Azure and Nutmeg, who with their water moves should definitely hurt Kleavor. And so I go in.
I duck and dodge, landing several hits before Kleavor smacks into a rock, stunning him and allowing me to throw out Nutmeg. It's a rough fight, but she succeeds, knocking it down, and I'm moving again, hitting it hard. Soon enough though its up and moving, I'm dodging and throwing, and then its time to bring out a pokemon again. I go to throw out Azure… only to realize I never switched my pokemon. A battered and wounded Nutmeg jumps out, and Kleavor shoots a rock shard straight through her. I Raged. Throwing out Azure, I took down Kleavor again, and unleashed balm after balm until it finally calmed down. Irida praised my efforts, but it felt hollow. Nutmeg was my second pokemon, and had made a reputation for herself by constantly getting into trouble but squeaking through. Not this time though, not this time. Rest in peace, my crazy Bibarel.
Before I went to the next region however, I did go to more of the areas on the map to get more pokemon. There's not much to report here… until I went to the waterfall. I rolled the flying gyarados, and I had 5 feather balls. Caught it in 1! Gari was the newest member to my team, and strong to boot. It was time to move on… time to go to the marshlands.
Fieldlands completed.
Teammates:
Azure, Adapt, Mom Shipton, Lilith, Cordyceps, Gari
Teammates lost: 2
Diorite, Nutmeg
Total Teammates lost: 2
Diorite, Nutmeg
Next Time: The Last Dance of Mom Shipton

OCs within the AU: (So far)
(I'll update with images as references are drawn up)
Charlie Hedgeworth:
They/Them (Although sometimes she/her alongside it)
Charlie is the first character I'd made for this AU and was originally based on my experiences in PLA. After a few lore dumps I connected their character to my sword playthrough with a few changes.
For their experiences in Galar, they had gone through the region much like the protagonist for the game would, successfully getting into the finals for the league before it was interrupted by Chairman Rose. Due to the disruptions the event had caused (With Eternatus and whatnot) the finale was postponed for a month. Within this time, Charlie alongside their adopted sister had caught Zacian and Zamazenta, and spent the time bonding with them. In an accident near the end of the month (With some other events I will get to,) Charlie is taken by Arceus to be the supposed "Hero of Hisui" leading to the events in PLA. This leaves a mark on Galar when they've gone missing without a trace, much like Ingo had a few years ago.
Charlie isn't very talkative, and mainly avoids talking unless absolutely necessary following bad experiences in their childhood. They're a lot more subtle in their actions but tends to catch on more details then other people, leading them to just wander off to places without much of a warning. They are quite impulsive and is more likely to get themselves into a mess, not really thinking actions through. Although they are a quick thinker on getting themselves out of confrontations, but would put themselves in front of danger frequently to protect others.
Rowena Winchester:
She/Her
Rowena is the OC representing my pal @risapissa after we'd talked about a whole ton of lore stuff. I settled on Rowena being Charlie's sister, adopted into the family after both her parents died at a young age.
Both Charlie and Rowena mainly grew up on their Grandmother's Pokémon range, although grew impatient to start their journeys at 15 in Unova, so instead they went to Galar to begin at 14. She follows through the plot alongside Charlie and catches Zamazenta near the end. When Charlie goes missing, the final tournament of the year is cancelled to search for the trainer. When it turns up empty, Rowena returns to Unova and her grandmother.
Rowena is loud and talkative compared to her sibling, and doesn't hesitate to add her thoughts into the mix of others. She has a tendency to interrupt others but stands up for herself and others proudly when threatened. She also just does the most random shit a person can do alongside her loud competitiveness, although has more impulse control and is more careful than their quiet sibling.
Elijah Elliot:
They/Them/He/Him
Elijah is the OC based around @e-mailartist 's Pokémon Sun nuzlocke run, with a lot of additions to the story, although the main basis applies.
Elijah moved from Hoenn to live with their cousin Kukui, and to experience Alola as a whole, after meeting Lillie, they get caught up in the main plot of Pokémon sun/moon with a few personal changes, like an older character to actually help them and Lillie through all the traumatising stuff that happens.
Elijah is energetic and expressive when it comes to the things they like most, pokemon, ancient stories with mysterious legends, challenges that they aspire to beat, even so Elijah holds a protective and loving demeanor when it comes to Lillie, a good friend of theirs since they moved to the Alolan Islands. Overall they present themselves through with friendly and well-spoken voice, but within serious circumstances their personality changes, where Eljiah acts as an adult within a child's body through burden and silent suffering.
Alyx Hart:
She/They/Him (Mainly They/Them)
This character is a result of me messing around on Pokémon party makers, and choose the most fucked up team and cool looking team I could then trying to form a backstory to why someone would have such a stupid team. They ended up becoming the supporting character for Elijah and Lillie because these are 12 year olds just taking on the most traumatising events. This character is mainly just self indulgent shenanigans and is purposely OP.
Alyx is a supposed “reality hopper” where they travel to different major events, documenting them for personal reference. In reality they were forced to merge with a shiny rayquaza at a young age, that had a cult following. Major Events in the Pokémon world can cause cracks in the reality, that do seal up themselves and generally don’t cause damage unless an outside force impacts it, to keep up the appearance of being human, Alyx uses energy from travelling through these to replenish their own abilities with being part/mostly god-like Pokémon. Alyx in reality is a very powerful trainer with the unique power to Mega evolve multiple Pokémon in his party at any given time if the situation calls for it (although this drains energy from the rayquaza itself, and can lead to fainting.) When they’re about 22 they’re deposited in Alola and await the chance to catch a ride somewhere else, not intending to stay around besides to see whatever event was happening. The region itself is flooded heavily with ultra space energy, that isn’t entirely comfortable for a rayquaza. Although originally intending to leave the first chance they get, after frequent run-ins with Elijah and Lillie, she ends up getting involved in protecting the two kids when realising how much is put on their shoulders.
Alyx, the closed off, cold and calculated, they have always had a heard time trusting others as the years passed them by, possible friendships are blocked off by their inability to lower their walls for others and the expectancy to likely not see them again once travelling to the next place. Alyx knows how to handle themselves and wont be pushed around by the likes of those they dislike through violence if need be. It is until they meet Elijah and Lillie that their walls seemingly fall to let the two teenagers in. Alyx finds a sense of joy when around the two and will look after the pair at any cost. Alyx soon becomes so close to Elijah and Lillie that the three mutually agree to resemble their own trio of siblings.
Well this is what I’ve gotten so far tonight, thank you @e-mailartist for the descriptions and help figuring stuff out, more will likely me added and when I get on PC the “read more” will be in a better spot

Soooo.....my nuzlocke went horrible and everyone died with the swiftness. Mind you I was still at the very beginning so I rerandomized, got a Bulbasaur but somehow i randomized the exp to be super low after a battle so i was forced to rerandomize the game without touching the exp.
So I have a new starter:
Tumblr media
Meet Gigatron the Beldum. There were other good choices for a starter but I have it set up where after it becomes a Metagross, it can permanently evolve into its mega form.
Tumblr media
Surpringly it’s a Grass/Ice type which is different but but not so good defensively. I already got beat by Hau’s Swadloon who killed me with Leech Life and the Spearow on the bridge became a Chandelure which murdered me with Ember. I’m not starting the nuzlocke part until after I get pokeballs to catch some more pokemon.
Anyways I hope the rest of the nuzlocke goes well

Idea for an Ultimate Nuzlocke(tm):
Every new main story is played through in generational order.
There are 8/11 games to be played total.
Sword & Shield arent included i this challenge because not all pokemon are in a game that you pay £90 including DLC for.
RULES:
Your surviving team is reverted to base evolution forms and level 5 and genned into your next game right at the beginning. (PkHex or similar) These pokemon can be used again or not, it depends on what you wanna do.
PC pokemon cannot be transferred up to the next game, even if they were part of your party before or previously transferred in from your last party.
The pokemon you beat the champion with and register in the hall of fame are the pokemon that are transferred. You cannot just take 6 random pokemon out of your box and decide to take those, unless they are in that final hall of fame team.
If you black out, you do not lose. You must box/release all of your fainted team and reconstruct your team with pokemon in your boxes.
If you black out with no boxed pokemon, the run is over and you have to start again from the beginning. the VERY beginning. the first fucking game beginning bitch i 'int playing.
Trading with your completed saves is banned (unless you are evolving a pokemon via trade, which is allowed).
Transferring pokemon from side games/games outside of the challenge is not allowed. (This also applies to distribution carts & event pokemon).
Abusing glitches and coding exploits/oversights is not allowed.
Breeding is not allowed.
Optional Rules (these can be applied in any combination to suit you):
( * = Recommended)
Gift pokemon cannot be accepted (except your starter).
Alternatively, gift pokemon count as your encounter for that area in which they're accepted. (gates count for the route they lead into).
Each Pokemon Center can only be used once.
Each doctor or nurse can only be asked to heal you once. *
Legendary pokemon are not allowed.
Cheese strategies like F.E.A.R. cannot be used. *
Wild pokemon grinding is banned.
The V.S. Seeker (and other similar functions) are banned.
Shiny hunting is banned.
Shiny clause on*/off.
Dupes clause on*/off.
Abuse of rematchable trainers is not allowed. (Eg: breeders in BW2)
Manipulating swarm pokemon (Gen 3 carts inserted in DPPt) is not allowed.
PokeMarts cannot be used.
Items are not allowed to be used in battle.
Held items are banned.
Vending machines cannot be used.
Fossils or duplicate gift pokemon can be trashed or released, respectively, for one token encounter each at any location of your choice. These token encounters are not transferable between games. *
TMs cannot be used. (HMs remain usable in games where they're necessary)
Move tutors cannot be used.
Restricted to 1-3 pokemon types.
GAME ORDER:
There are two ways to play the game order. "Full" & "Condensed".
Only one of each group of games is to be played.
FULL ORDER - 11 GAMES:
Red/Blue/Yellow
Gold/Silver/Crystal
Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald
FireRed/LeafGreen
Diamond/Pearl/Platinum

Black 2/White 2
X/Y
Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire

i’m doing a kind of “relaxed nuzlocke” on shield. kinda like the one i did on sun a few years back, but adjusted a bit for the new encounter mechanics in gen 8. like in the sun one, i’m giving my ‘mons all “1 extra life”; they can get knocked out once, but if they do a second time, i gotta box ‘em. also gonna surprise trade out a pokemon after each gym badge. i rolled a die to pick my first starter, and flipped a coin to pick which kanto starter to get from the isle of armor dojo. the big different thing in this from the sun run, is that in each new route or area, i can choose to either: catch a random encounter pokemon in the grass/water, or pick one of the overworld pokemon running around. though if an overworld ‘mon (or grass mon) runs into me before i make my pick, i gotta catch that one. (tho if it’s a “very strong-looking” pokemon, then it doesn’t count since you can’t catch those). also if i accidentally knock out the pokemon before catching it, then i just don’t get to catch a pokemon in that location. which i accidentally did once so far;;;; Kongo’s already had his extra life used up because of a dang squirrel using roll-out that i couldn’t run away from until AFTER it knocked him out >:U Flower and Hornet have been the real MVPs of the team so far

To summarize, this is a Comic based on an alternate starter Nuzlocke run for a Rom Hack I found one day while looking to see if there was anyone who had made one that had Fairy types added to the game, and for some reason this wound up being the first result for me at the time (This was before I started doing Nuzlocke runs). The hack didn't have the added fairy types, but it allowed you to catch all Pokemon in the series, and that sounded like a good enough consolation for me to download it... and promptly forget about it for a year since I got Pokemon Sun some time before that. After remembering I had the rom recently and reading a bit of the documentation included, I found that the game was also somehow made even harder than usual due to the changes made along with the added Pokemon, so I decided "Hey, my self-esteem is low enough, why don't I nuzlocke this?", so I did, but not before making one more change... You see, what got me to remember that I downloaded the rom was me fiddling around with the Pokemon Randomizer and wanting to do so with Pokemon White. I also found that the program also allowed you to change the starters of both you and your rivals manually without randomizing anything else; and when that fact dawned on me, my idea for an Ashlocke challenge came into fruition, and the rest is history. Fair Warning: Though the comic is pretty lighthearted in the begining, this comic is going to cover a LOT of topics later on, many of which are complex and pretty adult in nature.

The Legend of Perfect Jazz
Last year I participated in Season 2 of the Ultimate Communitylocke League on the Nuzlocke Forums, a challenge in which you choose a specific Nuzlocke ruleset and do a run of one game from every region in the mainline Pokémon games with that ruleset. In my case, I was doing an Alphabetlocke- a variant in which the nicknames for every Pokemon are randomly generated, and your team has to consist of the first 6 alphabetically of the Pokemon you have available. I wouldn’t recommend this ruleset in retrospect, as having to stop everything grind up a new member half the time you catch something isn’t the most pleasant experience. But it was from this ruleset that the legend of Perfect Jazz began.
April 8th, 2020. Lockdown is in effect, even in Perth, and I’m on the last run of my journey. Ultra Sun. I’ve been using a particular website called Behind the Name for my nicknames, and being exposed to a lot of obscure names from a variety of different cultures as a result. After the disappointing catch that was Waheeda the Alolan Meowth, who would have been both of limited use even if its name wasn’t buried in the last stretch of the alphabet, I was moving on to my encounter in Hau’oli City.
Out pops a Magnemite. This is an exciting moment- Magnemite and its evolutions are excellent in Nuzlocke runs on account of their great typing, solid movepool (at least in later gens), and good stats. A boon like this so early in the game can be quite the benefit, if the cards fall right- especially seeing as in US/UM, its has early access to moves for both its types as well as both paralysis and confusion statuses. These status moves made it a bit of a pain to catch, but eventually it stayed in the ball, and I randomly generate a name for it. This, of course, is the origin of Perfect Jazz. I don’t know how a website like this could spit that out as a name, nor do I know why. I have never been able to replicate this result, nor does it appear in the websites databases when I go back and check. My only assumption is that some random person submitted Perfect Jazz as a name as a joke, later having it removed but not before it was generated for my Magnemite.
Tumblr media
I don’t know why, but it’s a weirdly fitting name. A lot of jazz instruments are metal, so its possible a Magnemite could attach one to itself and…somehow, electromagnetically, play some tunes? I haven’t figured it out yet. I am, however, thinking of getting that commissioned.
Unfortunately, P is on the lower end as far as initials go, and so Perfect Jazz would not last long on the team. While they were fantastic for the time they were present, such a time didn’t last. Perfect Jazz would escape the run unharmed, despite how bloody it ended up being in the end, but underutilised.
Cut to 2 months later. The Ultra Sun run, and by extension, my UCL season 2 challenge, is over, but hungry for more community Nuzlocke content I sign up for the Nuzlocke World Cup. NWC was a competition rather than a challenge, with teams of runners matched up against their opponents seeing who could get the lowest death counts for certain games for certain rulesets. It’s round 2, and my team, the Unova Units, is on the chopping block- if we lose this round, we’re out for good. My assigned game is Crystal, and I’ve been running it fairly well- I believe I was only at 2 deaths at that point and would only finish with 3. At this point, I had an Onix on my team, and while Megasnek was pretty good, Onix peaks eventually and is terrified of a fair few coverage moves. So I wanted to evolve it. Typically, in GSC, the only way to get a Metal Coat to evolve Onix into Steelix is as part of the S.S. Aqua event, which takes place after the credits roll for the first time, and therefore outside the scope of the run I was doing. There is, however, a 5% chance that a wild Magnemite encountered will be holding a Metal Coat, and I still had the TM for Thief, so I burned that on my Haunter and went hunting. Somehow, before I actually got that 5%, I got the much lower chance of a shiny Magnemite.
Tumblr media
Shiny Magnemite is not especially distinct in Gen 2- the only real difference is the lack of a blue tinge to the grey body. But somehow, through the ridiculously fast turbo enabled by the emulator, I managed to catch the trademark sparkle, and later, the mon itself. Considering the recency and, frankly, how funny I found the name in the first place, I chose to name this too Perfect Jazz. Or, well, Perf Jazz, due to the character limit.
Perf Jazz is not my first Nuzlocke shiny. In fact, in the first season of the UCL, I encountered 1 each in back-to-back games- Tamiyo the Pelipper in Sapphire, and Empyrrean the Steelix in Diamond. However, both of those came too late in the run for me to consider adding them to the team. Not Perf Jazz, however, and I proceeded to grind them the hell up, to the point of evolving into Magneton.
Tumblr media
I was then informed that the NWC did not actually have a shiny clause in the rules, and that it was fine that I’d caught it but that I couldn’t actually use it in any battles. So once again, I was forced to abandon Perfect Jazz.
For now, this is where the legend of Perfect Jazz ends, but so help me I am going to make it continue. Whether that means finally using one in a Nuzlocke or breeding a shiny one for competitive, Perfect Jazz will one day properly take the stage, magnetized saxophone in hand. Or, uh, magnet.
(If you’re interested, you can find signups for the third season of the UCL here.)
