Ya wanna know what I just realized? The overall theme of scarlet and violet isn't actually about our treasure hunt, or making friends along the way,
It's obsession.(and how it hurts those around us.)
In the base game of pokemon scarlet and violet, we learn that the professor,(sada or turo depending on which version you play.) was absolutely obsessed with the paradox pokemon within the scarlet/violet book. They were so obsessed with these pokemon that they wanted, NEEDED to make them a reality by bringing them into our own. Their obsession was so bad, that they not only lost their significant other, but neglected their son to the point of completely abandoning him, all for the purpose of "paradise". Not realizing they already had one with their son.
The obsession has been with the professor since their childhood. As seen in the secret cutscene at kitakami's crystal pool with terapagos in your party, it brings the professor from iirc 10 years before the events of the game start. When they ask to trade for the book ms. Brair wrote they offer their copy of the s/v book and tell you "this book captured my imagination as a child and never let go." They were obsessed. It costed them their life, completely ruined arvens childhood, and almost caused the destruction of the Paldea region because they were too obsessed with having pokemon of the past/future along side them.
Then we go to kitakami, and meet Kieran. A boy who is obsessed with the ogre, a.k.a ogerpon. Kieran believes the two as kindred spirits, outcasts in kitakami because they were different. Though rightly upset at you and his sister for not telling him about meeting ogerpon, takes it too far when he steals the mask from his grandfather. As a result of winning the battle to get the mask back from him his obsession shifts, not really about befriending ogerpon anymore, but about beating you/being as good as you are. He becomes mean and ruthless to those around him in blueberry academy, becoming champion in order to try to be strong enough to beat you.
In the underdepths of area zero his obsession with beating you causes him to seek out terapagos, and catch it so that he can finally beat you.
And finally ms. Briar, obsessed with terapagos and proving it was real. Her ancestor, the original author of the s/v book, heath, was claimed and told to be nothing more than a liar after writing what he had found in area zero. Briar was obsessed, determined to prove terapagos' existence to clear her ancestors name, and that everything in the s/v book was in fact real. In kitakami she was more concerned with figuring out the terastal phenomenon than helping to guide the students from the 2 schools on their field trip.
And once in blueberry, she asks you, carmine and Kieran to join her in area zero to find terapagos. Once in the underdepths she puts herself in danger because of a strangely terastalized glimmora, of which you battle to protect her and the siblings. In the final chamber of the underdepths, she eggs on Kieran to take terapagos(in crystal form) out of the tera crystals around it to finally see the pokemon she's been trying to get to for so long, and then tells him to terastalize the pokemon, putting everyone in danger. As the amount of Tera energy is too much for the little pokemon to control, and thus it goes out of control, destroying the environment around it, nearly causing a cave in.
Ms. Briars obsession with finding terapagos nearly caused the group to get killed because she was so obsessed with finding terapagos. Obsessed with proving that heath was telling the truth all this time.
Pokemon scarlet and violet showed that obsession can hurt and harm those around you. That an obsession like sada/turo, Kieran and ms Briars', will cause the pain of others and themselves in order to reach their goal.

i keep forgetting arven is in the humanities track and i know humanities is like the study of human understanding through art and music and psychology and philosophy and stuff so it's probably supposed to be analogous somehow to the complexity of his relationship with his parents and how hard he tries to wrap his head around why they did what they did and how weird it is that the AI thought differently than the real professor and the implications of environmental psychological effects being so complex and unpredictable that they can't be properly measured and translated into even the most super-duper of supercomputers and how it's really weird that even though he knew the AI was obviously not his parent he still had a visceral psychological reaction to their final goodbye because all his brain saw was his parent's face and voice apologizing to him after all that time but i just think of that twitter post that's like "if you're a student just take psychology instead of paying for therapy so you can get credits and figure out wtf is wrong with you"

Love that scene in Pokemon Scarlet (and Violet but I played Scarlet) where the protagonists were in Area Zero and describing their parents, and Penny is like "Omg, my dad's so annoying! He gives me annoying names like Pen-Pen," and Nemona is like, "I grew up in a rich family, and my parents gave me a lot of freedom but still made sure to care for me," and then Nemona tells Penny about how nice the protagonists mom is, and then Arven, with his fucked up parents, is just watching like:

I've been thinking why the Arven Storyline is so good, and I think it's about pacing and delivery.
Pokémon SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!
Also recalling this from memory so might be some inconsistencies but the spirit is there :) .
There's this mild mystery about this guy at the start, apparently he knows your Legendary Lizard and is responsible of it. He also seems that he'd rather not deal with said lizard, foreshadowing or a more classy term, setup. We also end up realising he is the son of the Professor with very little to go on of what this relationship is.
It is implied in NPC dialog that the Professor has been away from the public from a long time, but being the owner of the lizard that you own now he/she actually shows him/herself to you. He/She calls you by student ID, weird. And requests you sometime travel to Area Zero, the forbidden area, where he/she presumably has taken residence.
When you meet with Arven on the lunchroom he proposes that you embark on a quest for, ... Herbs? Herba Mystica that seem to have some weird healthy properties. It is known that he likes cooking but didn't think he was a healthy foods enthusiast, a healthy lifestyle guru. Anyway you consider it.
Later he gets into a fight with Nemona into who's path you should follow. He seems really aggro on keeping you to his mission. Weird.
First mission, after the fight, you find the Herb, ok seems more than just curative bogus, he cooks ya a sandwitch and Koraidon goes ahead and asks for yours. Arven seems apprehensive but you eventually give it to the bikemon and whoa! It got its powers back. So maybe Arven is helping his parent out? Or was this not planned? Wait "you can come out now"? What pokemon did he send and why was it kept a secret? Weird.
Now, for the first "delivery" on all these "setups" this guy's not just a crazy cook in search for the ultimate ingredients, the setup at the cafeteria has its answer in Mabosstiff, the pokemon he secretly sent out last scene. It is stricken with a weakening health condition and the reason his owner is gathering all these ingredients is to cure him before it's too late. This is great for two reasons: 1. We know there is a ghost dog Pokémon with a similar build to it's preevolution and it can evolve so the dog could indeed die and turn into that. Also we now have a reason why he's been so jumpy, he doesn't want you to help him, he needs you to help him. If you ignored him and went with Nemona or that wacky Hacker, He'd be all on his own, and may not make it.
After some more adventures, smth smth setup for weird futuristic/ancient form of Donphan he recognises. Mabosstiff... Is cured! The relief on his face and the tension of the story is relieved as the dog wears again its toothy grin. This sort of thing is actual good storytelling methinks. Simple but effective. What a great... Wait it's not over.
Apparently it is revealed that you must finally go to Area Zero, together with the other cast, it's exciting because there's been so much build up to it, mystery and weird new pokemon. However it is also revealed that, one of the strongest deliveries in the story, Arven has an absentee parent, which made him be on his own... With only Mabosstiff as his family. This is potent. Of course this makes you want to meet this prick, see what kind of character does such a thing, but more importantly, it gives weight to Mabosstiff's recovery, together you saved not a dog, but the only family left by his side.
After you completed all three routes, he shows you the way to area zero. Which you discover about the place and the Professor, fellow of science, too absorbed in it, made a time machine oh so that was the deal with that donphan, oh cool there's more where it came from. There's also some very cool banter with the three coprotags, specially love the one about parents, this stuff is more direct than even Sun and Moon sometimes.
The Professor is acting odd though. Arven is suspecting something's off but doesn't really like the implication. You get swarmed, paradox pokes at all flanks. Another Lizard. Arven also reveals that he was envious and blamed Mirai/Koraidon for his parent's absence as there seems some unknown trust finally building up between them at the end of the scene. You enter the lab and finally get to meet...
Oh.
AI Sada/Turo. The professor died in an accident, standing in their place is an imperfect cold and robotic replica of the deadbeat progenitor. This "delivery" if you didn't have it spoiled just, hits way different that all others, the person who you probably hate by now, is long gone, no happy or cathartic reunion, no Arven giving a piece of his mind. If he wasn't by now, your friend is now officially an orphan. This copy seems to garner regret from its actions, its work is too dangerous and wants you to destroy it. The one thing that came over its family, its true passion, it is at least able to do away with it. However, you have to battle it as the defence system overrides its AI with this... well, it's pretty much the part of it you hate, obsessed, distant(literally lol it's like a good story above you up there). You beat it as your friends and Arven come to see the machine terastalize its insides or smth and it blocks your pokeballs and send the aggresive Legendary agaisnt you, completely unarmed you try to do something but your Sandwitch friend the MotoLizard achieves his battle mode. This makes things even, however you tetastalize him into even more of a dragon and oneshot him.
Last scene, AI is defeated, however for the machine to be over, "it" has to be over too. Arven pleads for it to stay, but it decides to go to its paradise, its life work and creation takes it to a different time in a final act both selfish and selfless sacrifice, In front of its son. Finally, "the climax".
You see, this all lead up to this, every setup and every delivery. Arven has finally faced the memory of his Father/Mother and it, in consecuence, has faced him. A bit of a somber note, but hey this is a treasure hunt, what about his treasure. I can't believe I'm saying this but this is one of the best implementations of "The friends we made along the way" trope I've seen. You see Arven has this factor of "afraid of ending all alone" that is implied a bit through the game, he is a bit abrasive but has a good heart. The last scene(Not the Ed Sheeran one) shows him on a understandable horrid mood when suddenly both Penny and Nemona suggest to go to eat, he is hard to get at first but this sense of now, connection to these people, propels him to join (Also Lizard nudge).
This is actually, even if way more contained, a bit on par with explorers of sky for best writing pokemon ever had. At least in my view on the matter what do you think?

My ScarVio Jacq Crack Theory
i have to get this out because i feel insane that no one else seems to be headcanoning/thinking about this except two people, but i feel like jacq is definitely either up to something nefarious or has some sort of relevancy to the upcoming DLC and/or the hexagon pokémon from the scarlet/violet book
Tumblr media
- he was marketed as almost a main character, one of the first few characters whose design was revealed and almost implied to be like a relevant character but in-game he is none pizza. nothing burger. go girl, give us nothing! he barely has any lines outside of his classes
- in relevance to that, he’s the only teacher that you can’t bond with. you can even bond with miriam and she doesn’t even teach a class. what’s up with THAT jacq
- his face during battle when he plays up the whole clumsy, sort of inept teacher vibe....excuse me? were you faking being a klutz for clout? (also his ace is farigiraf, the evolution of a two-faced pokémon...just saying)
Tumblr media
- why does he have a beast ball he gives you for completing the dex...where did this come from? why do you have that? How'd you get that?
- the fact he doesn’t comment at all or express any sort of surprise about the paradox pokémon in your dex and is just extremely excited for research to study? aren’t you curious about what the hell those things are, when most people think the scarlet/violet book is complete bogus?
- as above, part of what i believe to be the case here, is the fact that in my opinion, jacq seems to imply that he worked with the professor and clavell in area zero. it’s stated by raifort in history class 6 that clavell and the professor are rumoured to have work together
Tumblr media
and then jacq states in biology class 3 that he and clavell used to be fellow researchers “at the same facility” when we know that clavell and the professor were also coworkers, and it’s implied that the professor at least had a small team of people (and based on what raifort says, the identities of the people who were working together with the professor aren’t publicly known). and IF this is in fact the case, why does he have absolutely nothing to say about arven OR the professor? if he was acquainted with both clavell and the professor at this time, he’d surely know about arven, and is seemingly willfully ignoring his existence, as well as the death of a former supposed colleague
Tumblr media
- his glasses are shaped like hexagons, something hassel goes out of his way to make note of in art class 3
Tumblr media
which stands out to me given how prevalent the shape is, coming up over and over again. the exact shape covering the walls of time machine, and also the specific shape described of the pokémon from the book, comprised of hexagons. it is also the shape they repeatedly used in designs for the area zero expedition, present on the zero gate among other places
Tumblr media
now listen, this is not a bad thing, in fact i would love if jacq was evil (or at least relevant) because then he wouldn’t be a complete nothing of a character who just gives you a shiny charm and then fucks off forever. and i do think raifort (even if she is my wife whomst i love so so so much) and geeta are a bit suspicious as well BUT

Finished the Indigo disk DLC and want to dump all my thoughts about THAT post credits scene somewhere.
So, HEAVY HEAVY SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN'T FINISHED IT COMPLETELY.
--------
I can see that Game Freak wanted to make a "stable time loop" thing where we end up being the reason the Raidons have that name (we call them Mirai/Koraidon because the prof named them that, turns us they named them that way because they heard it from us), AND possibly give them the inspiration for the AI too (so.... It's our fault? Whoops?), but the thing is.... To be a time loop/classic bootstrap paradox, it has to actually follow a logical, circular line.
The professor we meet says and does things that make this impossible and contradict how things went in the timeline, and actually BREAK the loop:
- they act like they've never seen the Raidon but already have a son (and since they imply they've been away from home for a while, Arven is definitely not a toddler in their point in time)... their research diaries mention managing to pull the first Raidon BEFORE Arven was even born. ("I was expecting one new life to treasure, but what fortune to be blessed with this gift (the Raidon they just pulled)as well!")
- Most importantly, "our" prof giving us their book creates the situation where Arven shouldn't have it to do pretty much all the plot, because it wouldn't be there anymore.
- When they get the Briar book they say "maybe I should go home and read it..."... Like it's implying that they would actually go back home after finishing the research. The game seems to put a weird emphasis on this like it's supposed to be a solution but... We know it's not because they still stay away from home in our timeline even if they got this book.
- If you choose the dialogue option asking them if they are the AI, they say something like "An AI...? If it existed it sure would be convenient". So they are definitely from a point in time wayyy before they had the idea of making the AI (which is after they got abandoned by their partner and left all alone to go paranoid PPP mode, which again, is definitely after Arven was born)
- the notes from "our" Professor where they say "I met a kid and they gave me a white book" don't say anything about them giving the scarlet/Violet book away in return... Could be they simply didn't write it, but again... if they really met "us" like it seems to imply and for them it all happened years before even the main plot, then the Scarlet/Violet book should be REMOVED FROM THE TIMELINE FROM OUR (and Arven's) POINT OF VIEW.
The thing about time loops/bootstrap paradox plots is that they are paradoxes because they create a LOGICAL line of events that can only happen with an impossible event (time travel).
An example of how they could have made a bootstrap paradox plot:
Have Briar come to the crystal pool and meet her own ancestor Heath, giving him her "original" version of the book (or even just that one page where he mentions MEETING SOMEONE THAT GAVE HIM THE VERY PAGE WITH FORMULA HE WROTE what was up with that Game Freak??) that then Heath ends up "writing"... That's a classic bootstrap paradox where the book's existence itself becomes the paradox.
Instead we get a case where the professor's book, the key to the time machine AND the herba mystica plot, literally JUMPS the whole timeline because it fucks off with us in the post credits/the "future" from the prof's point of view lol
I'm not sure what to think: on one hand, I get the feeling that game freak wanted to make a time loop plot but screwed it up/didn't fact check their own writing/didn't care enough to make it have actual sense (sigh)
On the other hand, those and other things said by the professor could imply we meet a version from a slightly different timeline ("Maybe you are not actually from MY future", and them mentioning that their research involved pulling things from DIFFERENT timelines, explicitly using TIMELINES), and... That getting the white book is somehow going to help THIS version of the profs go back home for a somewhat happy ending for that Arven...? A part of me wants to think that it's that, a scenario in the line of "things didn't work out for our Arven but somewhere out here you helped another Arven get their parent back". This could also set up a Ultra sun/Ultra moon scenario with "Scarlet and Violet 2" games where we play through THAT timeline and "save" the professor... Maybe....?
But the note in the underdepths suggests that "our" professor ALSO had the white book and we know how that turned out for them lol
Why do WE even need to get the prof'a Scarlet/Violet book? It was fine where it was, lost in time with the AI so that no one can turn the machine back on.
So all in all: I kind of want to believe it's the second scenario (that's how the whole thing makes sense at least)... But knowing Gamefreak nope, they just botched the time loop idea by doing the ONE thing that doesn't let it make sense lol

Young future colleagues, 25/30 years before canon.
I want to know more about them and what they did when they worked together :’D
Might draw more of them, maybe some years later, maybe with Jacq as well.
(Headcanon that Clavell is a redhead since redheads go full white when they get old… also, he looks like Maxie)

ok i'm gonna ramble about that last battle in pokemon scarlet and violet because i am not over it yet and probably will not be for several weeks
the terastallization crystals appearing on the ai professor's body as their programming overrides their will. the textbox changing from "you are challenged by ai sada/turo!" to "ai sada/turo has no intention of fighting any more!" to "you are challenged by the paradise protection protocol!" to "paradise protection protocol initialized." all while the box is glitching out. your player character sending out the first pokemon in your party only for the ball to fall to the ground, doing nothing, and chains appearing around it because the professor locked all of the pokeballs that didn't belong to them, which no pokemon villain has ever done anything even close to before. the opening turn where you have no pokemon on the field at all and are faced with this aggressive koraidon/miraidon alone before you realize you can send out your own. the special animation that plays as your ride pokemon comes out of its pokeball and transforms into its battle form for the first time, overcoming its fear and trauma from what the other one of its kind did to it for the sake of protecting you and your friends. having a one on one battle between your koraidon/miraidon and the professor's koraidon/miraidon until you emerge victorious. the ai professor and arven having a heartfelt moment before the ai sends themselves to the past/future so that the time machine can be destroyed and they can live out the professor's dream themselves. reopening the game after beating it and seeing that the scarlet/violet book is no longer on the table because it's with the ai professor in the past/future now. holy fuck

Some good old Mochi Desires AU angst because why the hell not?
Some context:
While Arven is possessed by Dokutaro, he doesn't have any consciousness, unlike with Nemona and Penny. His desire was to be with his dad again, so Dokutaro trapped him in the mindscape, where he is with his dad! Yay!
But since Nemona and Penny are also connected with the toxic chain, Arven starts seeing their memories. Specifically the ones where they are in Area Zero, and they find the AI Turo.
