i started writing like three different fills for this one before this finally stuck

poor nadir, prettyboi auri, meets ishgardians

Nadir has never been so cold.

Coerthas is beautiful, he can admit to that, and the seas of endless white and green had fascinated in the beginning, before the snow had began to melt into his robes. Even wearing more layers than he’d known he owned, he is shivering. His scales ache.

And the Ishgardians…

“Mayhap t’would aid our cause if I remain beyond the limits of the settlement,” he offers through chattering teeth, resisting the urge to summon flames to his palms to warm himself.

Something tells him that the Ishgardians who watch him like a beast would not be understanding.

“Why would you do that, Nadir?” The child at his side says, utterly oblivious. “We need all three of us asking questions if we hope to find the Enterprise in good time.” Or perhaps he is just overly determined to find their quarry to the exclusion of all else.

He glances over to the Ishgardians.

The Ishgardians glare back, unashamed.

“I will not be of much help.”

“Of course, you will! You-”

“Alphinaud,” Cid says quietly. He is also looking at the Ishgardians, at their focus on his scales and horns, barely visible beneath the layers of his robes.

He shivers again. This time, it has very little to do with the chill against his bones.

The child- Alphinaud - falls silent. “I- Perhaps you are right, Nadir. It may be best if I go and make inquiries and you stay here, with Cid.”

Nadir would protest, except he does not doubt that if he is alone the Ishgardians will do something. He can defeat them, of that he has no doubt, but it would be a political nightmare and would only complicate their hunt.

Instead he sighs, his teeth chattering. “I mislike it here,” he murmurs below his breath.

Gods above, he misses his home.

Rilla gives him the note in the morning, the official sign-off on his recovery, her eyes very dark and very warm over her table as she bends down to write. She uses ink, for this, instead of the charcoal she uses for the notes she does not record with her mechanical device. When she finishes, she angles herself lower to blow gently across the wet ink, though her eyes linger on Damien, sending little sparks of heat racing across his skin as he stands and waits.

When the ink finishes drying, a short eternity later, Rilla straightens, rolling the paper and slipping it into a case.

"Your all-clear, Sir Knight," she says as she passes the cylinder into his hands, the irony in her voice softened by the conspiratorial tilt to her smile and the lingering warmth in her eye, as well as by the way she allows her fingers to drift across the back of Damien's hand before he can pull it back.

Damien nods, hoping that he looks more dignified than he feels, hoping that it isn't painfully obvious the way it feels as if his heart is caught in his throat, stopping up any words he might manage to summon to his lips.

Sympathy in her eyes, for half a breath, but she does not give him any breathing room. "Now that that's squared away," she says, that same mellow heat in her tone, "will you be joining me for dinner tonight?"

my background story for my himbo lizard boy wol has always been fairly vague and mostly along the lines of: he grew up in thavnair, his family were fishers who made him learn to fish even though he preferred fighting things, he attempted to fish by just jumping in the water and wrestling fish, and then a giant fish kicked his ass so hard he left home on a journey to grow into a better fighter so he could come back and get revenge (he never did. he got thancred to beat up the fish for him and now it lives in an aquarium in his house)

but I was thinking of elpis and the wol being told to relate the whole story from the beginning to the elpis squad and like...this boy cannot stay focused on a long story like that, he doesn't have a single braincell, if you tell him to relate the story from the beginning he's gonna go way too far back and spend half an hour complaining about the fish that beat him up back home

and there's hythlodaeus in the corner quietly making notes about this fascinating fish. notes he will find in his pocket after he returns home and turn into a concept leading to the creation of the fish ancestor of the wol's nemesis. the circle of stupidity is complete

other things that probably happened in elpis:

1) the wol almost definitely made some vague comment to hermes that hermes then recalled later as he looked down at meteion and inspired his decision to destroy the world. the comment would have been something you'd expect to find on one of those awful motivational posters that has some trite phrase over a stock photo of the ocean

2) the wol asked venat "have you ever wondered what the ancients really are?" (he probably read a conspiracy theory on tumblr) but he had a brain slip (without the brain part) and said "have you ever sundered what the ancients really are?" and venat was like hmmm while taking notes

3) wol told emet he looked "out of shape" and "not at 110%" in the future and offered to teach him his exercise routine. this would have happened in the middle of him relating how emet was going to have everyone he knew die and then murder millions of people. hyth prevented another murder from taking place but also took notes on the exercise routine and later built a home gym based on them. azem used it regularly. emet threatened to divorce both of them. soon after, emet unmade azem's favorite barbell in a fit of pettiness leading to them squabbling, a fight which started out serious and then drifted into more mundane topics like should we summon zodiark. azem took his gym and left

4) grani bit the wol. this didn't have any far-reaching consequences but it made him sad and he wants you to know

“urgh.. if i have to run down anymore papers to crewel i think ima be sick.” grim groans, stretching himself into your lap before curling up to nap. “tell me about it.. im sick of being sam’s supplier.” you sigh, leaning your head onto the back of the bench. “child of man? what are you doing outside of class?” a certain prince calls out, suddenly sitting by your side.

“really?!” you shout in disbelief, nearly waking poor grim up. leona was one to never admit to anything, always keeping you guessing. seeing him so.. direct threw you and malleus for a loop. “would you rather rest on tree bark?” he raised a brow, leaning closer to your face. “nope! thanks i guess, leona.” you hastily accept, deciding not to question it.

“thanks for talking to me malleus, it kept me from falling asleep.” you smile, now shutting your eyes. in a matter of seconds, you had already fallen asleep, relieved from all the previous exhaustion. the two princes glared at one another, tensions rising to new heights. “your services are no longer needed, you can go to the housewarden meeting. consider it an invite.” leona chuckles, waving malleus off towards the hallway, earning a genuine look of anger from the usually calm and collected fae.

“i appreciate the sentiment, but i believe the child of man and i were having a heartfelt conversation before you showed up. as king of briar valley, consider yourself excused.” malleus retorts, moving you over onto his shoulder. leona scowls in return to his obvious insult, very gently moving your head back to him. “if i remember right, they chose to lean onto me. not nice taking what’s not yours.”

“don’t act like you didn’t just steal their attention.” malleus scoffs, tugging you back towards him. “why you horned bastard.” leona growls, bearing his fangs at the now smug prince. and so, the game of tug of war began. constant pulling back and forth, back and forth, it was a miracle you hadn’t waken up yet. poor prefect..

HOWEVER, a certain someone else felt the shaking, and just couldn’t stand it. grims eyes flutter open as he looks to the two housewardens tugging you left and right with a frown. “HEY,” grim shouts, startling the two as they looked down. “do ya mind?! some of us need to get a lil shut eye.” he hisses, trying to look at the very least intimidating. “shut it, pipsqueak.” leona grunts, glaring at grim.

“grim, i believe it is best if you don’t intervene.” malleus stated sternly, moving him off of your lap. “HOW DARE YOU! GRIM THE GREAT LISTENS TO NOBODY! [MC]! WAKE UP, WE’RE SLEEPING SOMEWHERE AWAY FROM THESE FREAKS.” grim shrieks, almost rupturing both of their eardrums.

you stir awake at grim’s shrill voice, rubbing your eyes with a grumble before looking downwards. “huh..? oh, tsunotaro? leona? you’re still here?” you mumble, turning your your sides to see the two boys covering their ears. “let’s get outta here and sleep somewhere else. crowley might find us and give us somethin else to do.” grim frowns, tugging your hand.

“alright, alright, jeez. calm down, will ya?” you sigh, reluctantly getting up and following him inside. “i’ll see you both later! don’t go arguing more, ya hear?” you show them a smile before grim drags you out of sight, leaving both boys dumbfounded.

“it’s your fault they left. tch, dumb lizard.” leona grunts, glaring daggers into malleus. “my fault? how about saying that again after i shave off that mane of yours?” he jeers, feeling a vein about to burst. “haah? what was that?!”

they did indeed, argue again.
