Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
FAQs
How many libraries have you set up so far?
To date we have strategically placed 46 dynamic primary and secondary school libraries; one in Ghana and Tanzania each and the rest in Kenya across 12 counties in 6 provinces.
KEY libraries are impacting more than 44 300 students with a 5:6 ratio girls to boys at an average cost of $135 per child.
How are you affected by the internet and the digital age?
The internet and digital age have had a significant impact on access to online databases, and e-book access. With internet and the advent of our digital age, access to information and information management and analysis has become much easier.
Likewise, technical tools such as computers (pre-loaded with information so they’re useful even without an internet connection, or a teacher for that matter) and digital chalkboards help expand the nature and quality of education. Access to technology also motivates teachers and brings students closer to the world's best learning practices.
How can one join you as a librarian?
We are a small team of 5. We do not recruit librarians. KEY works with professionals who include among them volunteer librarians affiliated with instiutions.
What are the requirements to become a librarian?
To be a librarian, one needs an undergraduate degree in Kenya. Although, there are other library assistant and technical positions that require one to have a certificate or a diploma in information studies. It is important to note that specific requirements for qualifications as a inbrarian depend on the country, the type of library and the position wanted in a library.
What are your targets for the next 5 years?
Our targets are both to drive the growth and impact of libraries in Kenya, and to scale our library interventions for modeling in developing countries. Our goals are to do this by:
a. Advocating and promoting awareness of the relevance and success of providing well-resourced library interventions in schools for improved learning outcomes for all students and the potential future benefits of education in terms of income, employment, social chance and economic production
b. Increasing engagement with expert librarian volunteers
c. Creating more corporate and donors partnerships
d. Building more strategic libraries, including one in Nyanza and in North Eastern povince, because we haven’t gotten there yet.
From where do you get your funds?
KEY is a charity. In our first years, we self-funded so we were not making decisions through trial-and-error with other people’s money. In the past few years, we’ve received donations-in kind and worked with a range of supporters and funding partners such as corporate donors like M-Pesa Foundation, donor governments like the Turkish Government, and donor agencies like Goethe Institute.
What kind of books and technology are in your libraries?
School libraries should help form a knowledge foundation, but students should also read for pleasure. KEY equips libraries with dedicated computers, e-readers, interactive white boards (smartboards), postersiv, book shelves, reading and study area furniture and a relevant contemporary collection of over 1,500 new books (covered and labeled) that are specially selected to realize the general objectives of Kenya’s Primary and Secondary Education Syllabus, the Constitution and Vision 2030 to educate for knowledge, diversity, citizenship and democracy. The books are sourced form local and international publishers and cover varying local, regional, national and international issues in current affairs, politics, history, science, environment, culture, religion, classics, best sellers, life-skills, inspirational, business, economics, geography, biographies, business, culture.

Ta Prohm: (Khmer: ប្រាសាទតាព្រហ្ម, pronunciation: prasat taprohm) is the modern name of the temple at Angkor, Siem Reap Province, Cambodia, built in the Bayon style largely in the late 12th and early 13th centuries and originally called Rajavihara (in Khmer: រាជវិហារ). Located approximately one kilometre east of Angkor Thom and on the southern edge of the East Baray, it was founded by the Khmer King Jayavarman VII[1]:125[2]:388 as a Mahayana Buddhist monastery and university. Unlike most Angkorian temples, Ta Prohm is in much the same condition in which it was found: the photogenic and atmospheric combination of trees growing out of the ruins and the jungle surroundings have made it one of Angkor's most popular temples with visitors. UNESCO inscribed Ta Prohm on the World Heritage List in 1992. Today, it is one of the most visited complexes in Cambodia’s Angkor region. The conservation and restoration of Ta Prohm is a partnership project of the Archaeological Survey of India and the APSARA (Authority for the Protection and Management of Angkor and the Region of Siem Reap).[3]

Northern Ontario is Open for Business
THUNDER BAY, ON — Today, Premier Doug Ford and Jeff Yurek, Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry, announced that Resolute Forest Products will be investing $40 million into Ontario’s Northwestern operations, and an additional $13.5 million into maintenance and job creation at the Thunder Bay pulp and paper mill.
“The forestry sector contributes $15.3 billion to Ontario’s economy. That’s more than 150,000 good jobs across rural and Northern Ontario,” said Ford. “Our government was elected to create and protect good jobs like these for workers and their families, and bring prosperity to long-overlooked communities in the North. Resolute knows Northern Ontario is Open for Business.”
The expansion of the Thunder Bay pulp and paper mill by Resolute Forest Products signals their confidence in Ontario’s economy, and will create an additional 25 new full-time jobs. In addition, the company’s investment plan includes $14.7 million to improve energy efficiency at the mill and cut greenhouse gas emissions, $9 million for the pulp capacity expansion project, $5.3 million for facility upgrades, as well as $13.5 million for maintenance costs.
“Today’s investment builds on the momentum of Premier Ford’s policies that have declared Ontario open for business,” said Yves Laflame, President and CEO of Resolute Forest Products. “Minister Yurek’s first words to me last July were that his ministry would be working with the forest industry and its workers — Premier Ford’s government will be a supporter of job creators like Resolute, not a barrier to jobs and growth.”
“Today is a great day for Resolute, and for the future of Ontario’s forestry sector,” said Yurek. “This investment not only emphasizes the opportunities in this sector, but the real need for a Provincial Forestry Strategy — and we are developing just that. I am confident we can grow our economy, create new jobs and encourage more investments across the povince.”

"The Place Where I Belong" The Municipality of Lupon derived its name from a kalagan native word “NALUPUNAN” which means a body of land accumulated at the mouth of a river. It is part of Mindanao and Davao Oriental Povince. This place is known for production of agricultural coconut, banana, sugarcane and other major crops like corn and coffee. Moreover, it fields with tourist destinations such us: resorts, falls and springs which were a great avenue for summer escapade and vacation if you want to feel relaxing and refreshment. However, aside from these physical qualities it possessed, what makes Lupon a wonderful place to live? And how it differentiates to the other places that you have already visited? People have different favorite places where they prefer to stay with. Places that give them freewill to do whatever they want and to show who they really are. Lupon is the land where I was born, and I considered it as my favorite place. It was the spot where my eyes opened and saw the wonders of the world for the very first time. This is the place where my parents taught me to stand by my own feet and learn how to walk. Taught me how to speak the letters, words, numbers, symbols and even write it down in a piece of paper. My parents sacrificed their precious time and got sleepless nights for I cried every minute with unexplained reasons. I have brothers and sisters that serve as my playmates but sometimes we became enemies when we have some misunderstandings. I also met my first circle of friends, whom I shared with my most embarrassing moments during childhood days. Nevertheless, as I grew up I have learned to give back the love and support that showed by the people who helped me to achieve the personality of who I am today. I also learned to sacrifice things not just for my own sake nor for my own happiness. For me, Lupon is not just a name of a place but rather a name of a home that every time I heard someone mentions about this, it tickles my ears and my brain flashes a lot of memories in there. Knowing that memories are powerful that we should not lose and forget about it considering those events of our lives that made us sad, worry, grief, and those times we tend to give up. However, my heart feels secure and comfortable because of the peaceful and secure place that you can only hear the different sounds of animals when the sun hides. The aroma of the fresh air that comes from tall trees, green grasses, and colorful flowers that make my nostrils dance because of the fragrance flow down to my lungs that able for me to breathe properly. Lupon is the land of destiny. The people are destined to live here, together with their loved ones. Both my parents came from Bohol City, they met and married there at the same time started to build a family. However, my mother took the job offered to her in Mati City as part time secondary teacher and after couple of years she got promoted as regular teacher in secondary school at Lupon and they decided to live there for good. However my parents never imagined the distance they migrated all the way from Visayas to Mindanao and because of that, they have to be apart from their own families. At first, it took them time to adjust about the cultures and traditions of the place, yet they cope up easily because of the hospitality and friendly neighbors they have. I also believed that every individual has a purpose in living in that place and anyone is deserved to show and share who really they are. The place might not be a city in which it has rich of buildings, transportations and beautiful places, but I can ensure to you that you will appreciate the things that it has, even in its simplest form. It can also offer a lot of opportunities to enhance every individual’s talent and skill for it can offer same quality of education that a city promoted. Lupon, is the place where I started to plan my dreams and decided to stand firm just to follow it even how many times I failed. I also believe that failures are just part of our lives for us to learn and become the best version of ourselves. In conclusion, I will forever be grateful for my beloved hometown and never abandons the place. No matter how modern life we have nowadays because of the continuing improvement of technologies, thus I still choose to live the old times and I will be faithful to my land where I belong that no distance can separates me for a lifetime. Wherever I go my soul and heart will still longing for its presence and my memories will lead me back home. For I am immune to the flabbergasted beauty that its own, not just physically but also the qualities that it has and the people who lived there. Someday, when I am fully equipped, I ought to serve my land and do my part as a citizen.

Tillerson Baptized-by-Fire at State Department
LOS ANGELES (OnlineColumnist.com), June 10, 2017.--Hitting the ground running as Secretary of State, 65-year-old former Exxon-Mobil CEO Rex Tillerson showed why he’s the best man for the job, showing grace-under-pressure managing the Syrian crisis.  After hitting Shayrat airfield in Homs, Syria April 7 with 59 Cruise missiles, Tillerson showed the kind of steady hand needed to navigate the U.S. out of current tensions.  Responding to an alleged Sarin gas attack April 4 at Khan Sheikhoun in Idlib province, 70-year-old President Donald Trump responded with what President Ronald Reagan once called “swift-and-effective retribution,” hitting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad with Cruise missiles.  Denied by Syria and Russia, Trump said there’s plenty of medical evidence of the Sarin gas attack, something banned in 2013 under a strict agreement with the U.S. and Russia, removing thousands of tons of nerve agents from the Syrian government.
When al-Assad gassed rebel strongholds in Ghouta, Syria Aug. 21, 2013, killing 281, injuring 3,600, former President Barack Obama said al-Assad crossed a red line.  While Obama didn’t intervene militarily, he did broker a deal with Russia to remove al-Assad’s chemical weapons.  Russian President Vladimir Putin promised that al-Assad would no longer possess the chemical weapons to carry out such atrocities.  When al-Assad struck again with Sarin nerve gas in Khan Sheikhoun, Trump felt inclined to send the Syrian dictator as strong message.  Obama’s message in 2013 let al-Assad off-the-hook, paving the way for the recent episode.  Russia and Iran responded quickly to Trump’s Tomahawk Cruise missile strike, warning the U.S. than another strike would result in a military response.  Putin and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani warned the U.S. today about more strikes.
Russia and Iran insist that al-Assad did not hit Khan Sheikhoun with Sarin nerve gas, instead blaming it on rebel forces or a stray missile that hit a chemical weapons dump.  When Putin and Obama agreed to remove al-Assad’s weapons of mass destruction in 2013, it wasn’t because of rebel-held stockpiles. Emboldened by Trump’s change in Syrian policy, al-Assad’s military advisers went overboard hitting rebel strongholds.  Since evicting Saudi-backed rebels from East Aleppo Dec. 23, 2016, al-Assad felt emboldens to land a knockout punch on rebels fleeing to Idlib Povince, thinking the Trump White House was on the same page.  While Trump agrees in principle that al-Assad should stay in Damascus, the use of WMD crosses the red line, prompting the April 7 Cruise missile attack. Tillerson now heads to Moscow to defuse a potential time bomb.
Tillerson forcefully responded to Moscow right after the poison gas attack.  “Either Russia has been complicit or Russia has been incompetent in its ability to deliver on its end of that agreement,” said Tillerson, putting Moscow on notice that Trump won’t tolerate the use of poison gas.  If al-Assad wants to kill more rebels and civilians in Idlib Province, he needs to do it with conventional weapons.  Earning widespread praise from Democrats and Republicans on Capitol Hill, Trump has been pushed to escalate the six-year-old Saudi-backed proxy war.  Tillerson told CBS New “Face the Nation” that there’s been no change in Syrian policy, meaning, the top priority is defeating the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria [ISIS], not removing al-Assad from power.  Dispatched today to go to Moscow, Tillerson carries the message that the White House has no intent of escalating the Syrian War.
Putin condemned the U.S. strike as violating international law, knowing that most U.N. Security Council countries support the action, including the U.S., U.K. France, Germany and possibly China. Once al-Assad crossed the line with poison gas, he lost most NATO countries.  When Putin meets Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Moscow, he’ll try to appeal to Moscow’s common sense.  Joining forces with Iran or Lebanon’s Hezbollah militia leaves Russia a pariah state on the issue of backing the al-Assad regime.  Tillerson doesn’t plan to urge Russia to stop backing Syria but will plot a course to improve U.S.-Russian relations.  Trump’s be called a “Putin puppet” by the Hillary campaign and liberal press.  Bombing Syria dispelled the illusion about Trump’s close ties with Moscow. Tillerson wants Russia to know the U.S. wants better bilateral relations.
Called the most dangerous Secretary of State in U.S. history by Democrats and the liberal press, Tillerson’s proving himself quickly to be a major asset on the Trump team.  Tillerson’s cool-and-collected style is precisely what the U.S. needs to defuse current tensions.  With Moscow and Tehran threatening retaliation, Tillerson can flip-the-script very quickly.  Reassuring Putin that the U.S. isn’t trying to interfere with his effort to keep al-Assad in power, Russia can begin to reassess its policy of alienating the U.S. and European Union.  Putin has a lot more to gain by improving relations with the U.S. and EU.  Denying al-Assad’s use of poison gas, Putin hurts his own credibility, knowing that it’s not the first rodeo dealing with chemical weapons.  Heading to Moscow with an agenda in mind, Tillerson will work tirelessly to put the U.S. and Moscow back to improve diplomatic relations.
