I'm re-reading the Hungry City Chronicles and it is much darker than I remembered! So many people die! Nothing is safe from destruction!
Still, it's one of my favorite book series. I love the quick pacing, the world-building, the intertwining of different character's perspectives, the way everything builds and builds to a climactic ending, and of course the relationship between Tom and Hester.
I finished Mortal Engines in less than two days, at this rate I'll have the whole quartet finished by next week! Then I can start the prequels!

Hello friend! A friend of mine is doing a Stargate SG-1 rewatch and lamenting the slim pickings of fic on AO3. Do you know where she can find fic that perhaps is still on some old archive of yore? Or have any recs? She's mostly interested in Jack/Daniel and Jack/Sam. Ty!!
oh my. with all the love in the world to your friend visiting us from a very different fandom tax bracket than i have ever had the fortune to participate in (those two pairings have well over 6k fics each on ao3), i'll see what i can do!
[several hours of looking around later] bad news!! not much!
most of vintage sg-1 fandom was wiped out by expired domains, struck-through livejournals, ff.net's porn ban, yahoo lists, etc. some pages are still preserved in the wayback machine for heliopolis, the massive het-and-gen archive, and area52, the slash counterpart, but with the search and directory functions pretty much toast, they're almost impossible to navigate.
fanlore has an old list of archives (including plenty of jack/daniel ones). some smaller archives might yield wayback paydirt, especially if they were hand-coded. samandjack.net is still alive!
and, hate to say it, this was peak era for ff.net and they have like 30k fics over there... but all the explicit fic is gone.
i recently learned some people are still doing het-reccers (user-submitted fanfic recommendations, LJ archive is here). i don't know if any slash equivalents are still around (and i haven't looked at this site for genuinely fifteen years, so i can't speak to the quality of recs).
some sam/jack recs of mine; some of these authors multi-ship:
nanda: her resolution series especially should not be missed and i can't stress that enough. smut and action. fics great fics across the board.
it's kind of difficult to express how popular Salr323's fics were (under a different name) back in the day. i'm told that archive servers would crash when she posted something new. low on smut, high on PINING. rec: it was admittedly 1 am but as i recall this one made me feel like i'd just seen the fanfiction mona lisa
there are quite a few multifandom wonders who cut their teeth in this fandom, including missparker (rec: a small crime)
this cassandra fraiser fic dealt me some damage: nobody dies tonight by isawet
someone who's still in touch with her please harass splash_the_cat for writing 99 sg-1 fics and then walking away without cracking 100. lots of fun little snacks in there including this one
everything anr touches is gold <3
starting to get stressed out about who i'm missing!!!!
if your friend likes D/s this one is fun by tremontaine
lol read my stuff (i never wrote smut for sg-1 though)
hey everyone, please add recs in the notes/reblogs, especially jack/daniel recs because that's out of my wheelhouse but we aim to serve

I finished book 2 of the Mortal Engines series, Predator's Gold. The audiobook was really good!
1 second review of the main characters:
Tom: completely useless 9 out of 10 times. Bless your heart, honey
Hester: she's guilty of those crimes and what about it!!!
Freya: honestly, I love her. Excellent arc. Loved the bit at the end where she was like "oh, is that blackmail? Good, I'm glad I did it properly"
Caul: I hope he learned to eat more vegetables. Grew up in the big brother/Oliver twist underwater city and turned out amazingly normal despite this.

I saw discourse so this is the reminder to the class that I think the lore would be 1000000x better if Hylia was a magnificent terrifying red bird god and Demise was a ghibli style angry boar god horror show and neither of them looked humanesque at all thank you

I finished all seven Mortal Engines and my head is too full of goo to form an opinion like I promised, except that I still consider this my number one top YA series of all time (and I'm still obsessed with Fever.)
I've decided to keep the ball rolling by reading the Inkheart Trilogy next, just in time for a new fourth book to allegedly release this November.
I haven't read Inkheart in over 15 years, even longer since the last time I read Mortal Engines, so I'm looking forward to remembering even less about them than I did about ME/FC.

pet peeve is when a story tells us something is aberrant, but it seems to matter more about who does the behavior than the behavior itself. rorschach in snyder's watchmen isn't going too far; we watch nite owl and silk spectre ii snap necks and arms with gleeful, loving abandon, in slow motion no less, while they lecture the audience about rorschach's violence. heroes frequently torture the plot contrivance out of a villain and then moralize to the camera when the villains do the same. indominus rex's killing spree doesn't shock or appall me; all the jurassic world dinosaurs act like mindless killing machines, and the camera lingers, rapturous, on their cruelty. it's not an outlier. there's nothing interesting about it beyond as a set piece.
in a better script, the indominus rex would have had pathos; a chimera made for entertainment, for profit, stitched together with no regard for itself and placed in a lonely box. a freak among freaks. of course it would be mad. but the film wasn't interested in it as an animal, or a character, only as a moving piece of scenery for people to scream at or breathe tensely while it can clearly smell and reach them but doesn't, because it isn't a character and doesn't have motivations.
it's just sort of boring, i suppose. it tries like all other empty drab things do to cover it with bombast and roaring and soaring brassy scores but it's just sort of dull. a sprawl of nothing.
conversely peele's nope is a transcendent monster movie, imo, because it thinks about the the whys and hows, how jean jacket perceives the world, how the world perceives her, and lets that shape the narrative as much as jupe or emerald or gordy. they consulted biologists and behaviorists, digging into the meat of it. the creature as a camera as an animal as a device. nope has layers. it takes its own insane premise seriously, and has something to say, and is a goddamn good movie. i forgot where i was going with this.
#always rattling that quote from peele about the difference between horror and comedy being a matter of timing#creature horror is my favorite horror and most of it is Bad but i love it. sometimes you strike genuine gold and other times. well.#drives me crazy when monsters behave only in ways meant to be scary rather than how a real living thing would act. you can do both.#i remember hearing about a woman attacked by a moose in her own back yard. it gored and stomped her then left back into the woods#a few minutes later as she tried to crawl away it came back and attacked her again. terrifying! for no purpose!#a prey animal attack is often more frightening and vicious than a predator's imo#because to be eaten -- that carries its own logic. a prey animal though holds fear and rage and desperation in the core of it. it Knows.#a lion is a simple creature compared to a beef bull who just managed to corner the farmer against the fence#unlike say movie monsters continuing to chase and kill and attack while a volcano goes off around them and literally burns them to death#don't get me started on the icy swimming feathered raptor#also the goddamn dimetrodon in the caves like. i have never seen a beast less suited for a goddamn cave. why is it acting like that.#the book jurassic park goes into the behaviors and dynamics and such of the dinosaurs and what it means that we made them and why#using the cutting edge of science to craft both story and its monsters#but the franchise is dreadfully incurious#as many franchises end up being in the end#frog croaks#i guess i wanted to complain about the jurassic world franchise specifically actually#i haven't read crichton since high school. maybe i should revisit and see if my opinion holds lol

"Welcome, fellow creatures, and witness the power of Humanity!"
Hi. I am Luci Luck, and I am an (beginner) writer and (mediocre) artist!(I like to suffer creatively twice) You may know me from my main blog, @luciluck2046 and my (unfinished) undertale fanfic(not a great first impression), but this blog isn't about Undertale or fanfictions. This, this is the Universe of Stars!
This is the blog for a weird e-book series, that I will call Interstellar Empire. What's up with the series? Well, it basically takes place (on Earth) in around 3000, but the planet is overpopulated by the poor. The rich, they started colonies among the stars! They made an empire, they conquered, d e s t r o i e d plantes. Some of these planets are:
Ivarla, conquered, but at the beginning. (Charlotte and the Dragon's Eyes - WIP)
Foncera, a destroyed planet. (Equadirson Graly, the Last Werewolf - WIP)
Cendersile, a planet at war. (The Predator and The Prey - Not Started)
Marsolly, a planet, with it's resources almost gone. (Gold and Dirt, Rich and Poor - Not Started)
Those are only some of the planets, but those are the ones where books are going to be written. (I may add planets as ideas get to me)
Ik that this blog won't get many followers, but if you have any questions, ideas for another planet, tips for making the writing easier and better, etc, asks and comisions are open!

Predator and prey- one flayed open for the world to see, the other laughing through their teeth.
But the meek one hides one last trick, a madness that will spread quickly, exacting a balance.

A while ago I saw a post that was essentially "Who would win if your latest blorbo got into a fight with your first ever blorbo?"
Tumblr media
I dunno, that would be an interesting match up actually.
