My controversial opinion about Hob Gadling is that I believe he’s absolutely the sort of guy that “puts things behind him”, and tries to wash his hands clean of the things he feels icky about. This is implied pretty well in the show, with him blithely moving from soldiering and robbery to printing, from slaving to… whatever it was he was doing in the 19th century instead. That being said, this is not at all the same as actively trying to atone, or even making a concerted effort to be a better person, and I really wish fandom could tell the difference!

sometimes its really obvious how much people dont actually believe presentation=/=gender when they see their nonbinary friend go from extremely masculine to relaxing back into femininity once theyre comfortable with their gender and every time they call it detransitioning with zero indication thats what their friend is calling it. i dont know how to tell you this but sometimes you present a certain way for social reasons and not because thats how you actually feel. sometimes you experience dysphoria about your body that is actually related to how people view you and not how you feel about your body. i really dont think its that uncommon for trans people to swing really hard in one direction for the affirmation and then relax back into a different presentation once they are more comfortable in their gender

Helaena didn’t fight back or try to stop Blood and Cheese because she knew it wouldn’t make a difference, the same way you or I know that the sky is ‘up’ and that if you let go of an object from a great height it’s going to fall to the ground and break. Not because they were two men and Helaena’s a young woman with no weapon and no fighting experience, but because she’s a Dreamer.

This poor girl has been seeing cryptic visions of terrible futures and hearing prophetic riddles in her head her whole life — whatever specific knowledge she may or may not have had about what “the rats” were going to do, she knew it was going to happen (because what she knows always happens) and that she couldn’t stop it (because she has never been able to stop it).

“They killed the boy.” Not “They killed my son.” Not “They killed Jaehaerys.” It might not even register as something personal that those two men have done to her and her baby. Helaena experiences her son’s murder as a horrific forgone conclusion; ‘the boy’ was always going to be killed.

louis, lestat, and their single bed as a motif louis puts into his own story, but refuses to explore, is literally one of the sexiest parts of the show. it speaks volumes about a level of fulfillment and freedom that louis feels by being with lestat that he rarely explicitly comments on when he's relaying his story to daniel, which feels extremely relevant to his overall reluctance to examine the parts of his relationship with lestat that he really enjoyed.

because louis is a character who's hyper aware of how he presents himself. he's lived his entire life projecting a certain masculine, heteronormative image, and he's aware of how deviating from that presentation has implications that impact how people view him - from enjoying the opera, to the presentation of his nails. the fact that he moves in with lestat and neither of them ever put a second bed into any room in the house as a level of plausible deniability is so huge and oversight by so cautious a character, it can only be read as deliberate - especially when the conspicuous lack of a second bed is pointed out to them by both antoinette and a literal police officer. in an existence where you don't sleep in a bed, the bed becomes a symbolic object more so than a practical one. it's louis choosing to deliberately transgress against the societal expectations he lives out when he leaves his house, a bit of presentation that actually amplifies his truth as a gay man living with his partner, rather than masking or hiding himself, like he does for the outside world.

As Aziraphale and Crowley try to enjoy time together at Aziraphale's safely warded room, several things are bubbling under the surface. Will any boil over?

Excerpt

Crowley knew allowing himself to be pulled in by Aziraphale's doubtlessly temporary desire would rip him apart. But he wanted to be ripped apart–by Aziraphale. Sudden, firm pressure on the front of his shoulders had Crowley taking a hasty step back — just in time to avoid falling on his ass — as his shoulders made forceful contact with the back of the door. Aziraphale's chest pushed flush against Crowley, keeping him pinned. Crowley found that he didn't mind having more of Aziraphale's body in contact with his!  Experiencing being handled with passionate abandon wasn’t bad either! Crowley was surrounded by Aziraphale; arms clutching his shoulders, the heat and weight of his body pressed into Crowley's, his moans in his ears, his smell teasing him each time he breathed, his taste sweeter than wine in his mouth. Aziraphale kissed as though Crowley's lips wouldn't remain in this reality for long, leaving him no choice but to chase them down with all his fervor and desire, devouring Crowley's mouth in a steadily more sloppy display.

Somerton's misogyny and lesbophobia was fucking blatant and the fact his fans didn't care / notice until a man made a video on it is abhorrent. That IS a problem, people NEED to do better or else bigotry towards women will only continue to be accepted! Lesbians were calling this loser out for years and no one cared!

hey. as a lesbian who watched somerton's videos you have to understand that it wasn't "fucking blatant" and it was embedded between smart (stolen) points in the structure of the argument, and was given fake "evidence" to prove it --- something hbomberguy specifically shows with every example. i personally always noticed that it was weird and it was always a critical point when watching his videos (and also uh, side note but you shouldn't primarily go to cis white men for good takes about feminism and the lesbian experience anyways --- like, you should be watching a diverse intake of thought from underrepresented creators and understand that the cis/white/male perspective will always be limited because it's not universal)

to many, though, it for sure didn't register as a pattern of behavior until the instances were laid out. saying that audiences were "abhorrent" for "excusing" it just shows a complete lack of sympathy, because again: the pattern of behavior was the problem, and rhetorically each individual instance was relegated to enough plausible deniability where it slipped by most audiences who were probably watching the video in the background while they folded laundry or something. when bigotry is shrouded under the guise of fact, it takes on the affect of truth and abuses the viewer's trust in the creator. sure, media literacy is a huge problem, and i've written and researched so much into that, and yeah yeah audiences should "do better." the reality is though, putting the blame on the audience feels a little misogynistic in itself, bc you're just shifting the blame from the literal people who need to be blamed for practicing bigotry --- cis white men with a large platform.

the real thing u should be saying here is to call for a diversification of one's media intake, but no -- let's blame the audience for getting lied to, instead of uplifting female, queer, trans, poc, etc voices. the only way people "need" to do better, imo, is listening to those people instead and seeking multiple perspectives.

like y'all, let's retire this very new narrative that all james somerton fans were evil misogynists who willingly supported this and need to be destroyed. really most people who watched his content were younger queer people genuinely interested in queer media analysis, film theory, and queer history, probably excited that a long video essay was dedicated to their favorite show/movie/etc, and lets not pretend this wasn't disappointing for them as well. can everyone like chill out.
