I will say if you're learning chinese to read novels, it's a win win in some ways. To improve? You gotta read. What do you want to do? Read. Is there adequate interesting reading material just a literal glance in any direction? Oh wow you bet. You can't even fathom how many good novels await you in whatever genres you're looking for, many of which will be free and accessible online, with audio books too!

🤍- I'm grateful for my mom, my dad, my bro, and my little cat family, which always makes me smile (mama cat just gave birth to four more cuties, so there are seven of them now!). I'm really thankful for the clean air that I still can breathe despite being sick for a week :") I'm happy that I'm getting way better today, and hopefully I can start running again tomorrow!

12.15.22 ; term 1

I spent half of this semester having no idea what I was supposed to do. The other half was spent having no idea how to do the work while still having time to take care of myself. Thankfully, I think I finally have a handle on what is expected and how to approach the next 4 months. I definitely know now that I have to keep up with or even stay ahead of readings, because I learn nothing from lecture.

I can't help but being jealous of the young people in my class who are basically straight out of high school and still live at home. But I also know that while I may have less time than my classmates, I do have the advantage of having more life experience and fully formed opinions on stuff. So it sort of evens out.

This term, I have a couple goals I'd like to keep in mind. First, I'd like to update this blog at least once a week, and take more pictures. I miss being creative so I think this will be a nice outlet for me. Second, I'd like to take the bus to school to save money on gas and parking. And last, I want to cook most of my meals. I bought an instant pot on black friday, and I hope it'll make things easier for me. I've been eating a lot of fast food, and I know it cant be helping my energy levels because I'm not getting the nutrients I need.

I could probably also mention sleep and exercise, but let's keep to a minimum for now 🙃

I may update this month as I am planning to do some prestudy for january, but if I dont I'll be back in the new year.

Smart Books app. My pitch: it's free, it has some pre-provided novels, and you can also import files. It has TTS for each sentence, parallel text translation for each sentence, click translation for each word and TTS for individual words (and you can select among multiple translation site options which makes me like it better than how Kindle translates). It also let's you save words, so I assume it has some SRS flashcard word review feature like anki or Pleco, i just haven't saved any words so I am not sure how those features work.

It also gives you: a count of unique words in a book, count of total words, list of the unique words by most common to least common, tells you how often you click for the meaning of words, tells you how many words you are reading per minute, gives you an estimate of how long it will take you to read. These features are great when trying to track how difficult a book is, to prestudy using the word list by frequency, to see improvements in reading speed (as estimated time to read decreases and wpm read increases) and vocabulary (when you start looking up words less often).

I think the app can also generate an Entire parallel text file, if say you had a novel in chinese and just wanted an entire copy in mtl English (maybe this would be useful for people desperate to just read a translation even if it's machine translation?). But I haven't used that feature, as i would prefer to read in my target language and just show the parallel English translation of sentences when I'm confused.

The 3rd picture below shows the quality of machine translation in the app. As you can see (and I mentioned in a prior post) Smart Books app has some translation weaknesses (with chinese) when it comes to how to phrase English translations of Chinese sentences with verbs that have no explicit subject/object. This sentence more or less meant "Pupu, what was written [there on the car in the last sentence]?" The machine translation in the app also occasionally messes up he/she/it pronoun for another one, especially when the pronoun is not specified in the sentence. These are fairly common issues in mtl for chinese though, so I'd say the translation quality is overall around the quality of DeepL.

The (late) prestudying coffee. ☕️

As I had a late night sesh yesterday, today’s session starts L:)A:)T:)E:), which is never good.

Anyways, everyday before I dig myself into the books I enjoy my coffee and breakfast in front of anything that doesn’t involve studying. Just to start the day of with something I enjoy.

Normally people would say that, “alright, I’m gonna have my coffee and go through what I have to do today”. I often do that myself but not in this case as I’ve set a goal to learn a specific amount of questions / day, when I started studying.

Moron teaching methods. Repeat it over and over, slowly, in small words. Now think a bit. Now ask a basic question that was answered word for word in the paragraph. Can anybody get it? Can we all repeat the same thing? Do we have a well-trained flock of parrots now? Good.

This morning I received the first of the information for the upcoming year, and the information was mainly about the first week of training with the online admin program, and information about the clinic sessions which are going to be run every week throughout the year.

Last night I also received a lecture from my dad about watching too much Netflix as well, so these two events kickstarted my prestudying for class which is in 19 days 😜 I’m kinda excited and kinda nervous but we’ll see what happens

Today I wrote down which groups I’m in, and the finalised timetable for week 1 because I needed to correlate my group number with my session time 😅 a slow beginning, but now I plan to finish pre-learning content for two/ three lectures.
