Chapter Seventeen: The Campaign: Malatra Pt. 1
Tim slept in his bed one last time while I packed our things. My phone rang, and I answered to keep from waking Tim up. “Hello?” I whispered.
“Jason, I heard about your friend’s mother—.”
“You don’t have to say anything… Um, Barbara, can I ask you for a favor?” I interrupted.
“I don’t know. It depends… Is it illegal?” Barbara asked.
“No. It’s—. I need you to help me get back in fighting shape. I know Bruce won’t change his mind because I can throw a couple of solid punches, but I’ve gotta do this for myself. I need to know I didn’t let the accident beat me,” I explained. I told her as much of the truth as I could.
“Jason… Wednesday through Friday after school. No excuses,” Barbara replied. I grinned.
“I’ll be there. I promise,” I whispered, “Thank you. Thank you, Barbara. You’re the best.” Barbara was a tough person to move. She wasn’t emotionally driven or faint of heart. Barbara was sharp and efficient. Practical and poised. She was everything I needed in a teacher.
“ Yeah, yeah, yeah. See how you feel about me after our first training session. Bye, Jason… And good on you for getting back up. I thought about what I said to you the last time we talked. I was wrong to tell you that you were being childish. If taking this time away from home was good for your mental health, who am I to tell you—?”
“Barbara, I am a kid. I never said I wasn’t. I was pissed off and closed in, and I reacted. I was in a dark place, and I’d be lying if I said I wanted to go home now… I know it’s what I have to do. I’m gonna be mature about it, for Tim’s sake,” I replied, “I’ve gotta finish packing… But, um—. Thank you, Barbara.”
“Don’t thank me yet, Boy Wonder. See you Wednesday,” Barbara teased. She hung up, and I shook Tim awake.
He pushed my face away and laughed. “ Uggghhh. Jason, what are you doing?” Tim asked.
“She’s gonna train me. Wednesday through Friday, so we’ll condition Saturday through Monday,” I replied. Tim grinned.
“And on Tuesday ?” Tim half-joked.
“Warlocks and Warriors,” I replied, “And—. Oh, Ives wants to come over tonight. I gave him Bruce’s address and said he could stay the night.”
“Ives wanted to hang out? Does he—?”
I nodded. “Ives knows, but I asked him not to mention it… Unless…” I trailed off. Tim shook his head. “Then, he won’t…” I tied labels to Tim’s chargers and tucked them into his suitcase.
*
We went to the manor at sunset because I knew Bruce wouldn’t be there. Alfred seemed happy to see us again. Ives showed up an hour after we got there, and Alfred served dinner. “Hey, guys… Do you wanna do another campaign here this weekend?” I asked.
Tim’s eyes widened. “You want to?” Tim questioned. I nodded.
“That’d be sick,” Ives replied.
“Cool. Tell the guys Tuesday we’ll hang out here,” I replied. Ives glanced at Tim and looked at his plate when he saw me looking. Tim was oblivious to everything going on in his life because of everything.
“Jason should DM this one,” Tim suggested. I choked. “Come on. You can do it. I see how deep you get into character. And you’re the only person willing to indulge Hudson. Besides, I think the guys are still mad at me for what happened in Ravenloft.”
“That was messed up. I can’t believe you killed Ives first and swapped him out with a Doppelganger. That was sick. And Ives… I’m shocked you let him go through with that,” I replied.
Tim smiled. I reached for my bed to pull myself up, but I felt a shockwave shoot down my back into my legs, and I let go of the mattress. “Jason?” Tim asked.
“I’m okay… But like—. Are you guys sure you want me to DM?” I questioned.
“Yeah, definitely,” Ives replied, “You’ve gotta try it at least once. If you don’t like it, you don’t have to do it again, but you should give it a chance. You might be good.”

"In the living forest lands of Malatra, all seems quiet. Suspiciously so. A warm breeze blows, rustling through the canopies overhead. Topiaries of smiling children surround a small fire. It is the only possible sign of life for several miles.  A song breaks through the near-silent forest. It starts low and guttural, like a collective groan, and then the ethereal choral collections of synchronized sobs. It is a song of mourning. A once-distant sound, now building as if it is approaching. The forest's dirt walkways slowly disappear under shrubs and bushes, and it seems like a trick to the eye at first, but no. You see it now. The bushes have feet where roots should be, and finally, a male voice breaks through the grieving chorus," I cleared my throat. "State your business," I bellowed. "He steps forward. A bamboo elf. His hair is a warm brown with the same red undertones of autumn leaves. He keeps his hair in wide and intricate waves and curls. His skin is an olivine green, and his eyes dark brown and ancient, study you. You all recognize this bamboo elf immediately, but before we get into that… you should introduce yourselves." A big, goofy grin spread across Tim's face. Silence fell over my room as I waited for someone to speak.
"You fucking killed it," Hudson mumbled in shock. I covered my smile. "Clay Everlake, earth genasi monk here. I'm stone grey, with bright green hair made of leaves, with the front pulled into a warrior's bun—."
"Man bun penalty!" everyone shouted.
"Is not! Anyway ... It's a warrior's bun, and the rest of my hair hangs leafy down my shoulders. I'm fairly young, rough and tumble, and trouble seems to follow me wherever I go," Hudson answered.
I gestured to Ives. "Eldrid Deepwood, here. I'm a firbolg druid... I uh—. I have bluish-green skin and dark eyes. My hair is whiteish-grey, luscious, and thick, almost mane-like. My ears are floppy... And uh—. And despite my advanced age, I'm a timid sort of fella," Ives stammered in an Irish accent.
I nodded and pointed to Hudman. "Fettar Keephorn. Dwarven rogue, dark beard, dark brown eyes.  My loyalties lie with Clay Everlake... Unfortunately," Hudman muttered in a dry voice. We all laughed. "I'm not much for words."
And Tim. I looked forward to Tim's character because we'd been pretty hush-hush about our plans all week, which meant we had nothing to discuss outside of training. "Posy Moonfall, gnome cleric here. I've got blond shoulder-length hair and grey eyes hidden behind foggy glasses. Well, they're usually quite—. I'm not used to being in the presence of a man of Mr. Deepwood's stature. I'm clumsy, but my intuitive nature makes up for my shortcomings... At least, I think—. Oh gosh. Am I rambling?" Tim replied in a woman's voice. He was surprisingly good at it. I almost forgot my place.
I cleared my throat before continuing. "Clay Everlake, your connection to this bamboo elf is deeply personal. Isn't it?" I asked, nodding at him. I liked Hudson. He always made me laugh and was my favorite of Tim's friends. He also tried to make me feel better about my scars by showing me the dent in his forehead. It wasn't the same, but he genuinely thought it was.
"He raised me. When my family was slaughtered on the outskirts of Malatra, he took me in and raised me. He's a father to me," Hudson answered. Hudson and I locked eyes, and I smiled down at my notes. "I didn't expect to see him under such grim circumstances."
"And Fettar?" I questioned.
"The elf and I… used to date,” Hudman replied. We all laughed.
“Fettar and Theren Everlake dated? You guys were—.”
“A couple. Yep,” Hudman doubled down.

100 Prompts #4
im so obsessed with seeing my other hundred prompt list being used so much, seeing what different people do with the same sentences is so cool! so, here’s another one! please send me a number + ship (au/trope where applicable)
“There is something profoundly wrong with you. I like it.”
“It’s okay to be wrong sometimes.”
“Pretty sure that’s illegal.”
“A candlelit dinner? Okay, what did you do?”
“Don’t fucking start with me.”
“Well, I’m pretty sure I’m not dying, at least.”
“I chose you. I’ll always choose you.”
“That kid is too cute to be yours.”
“What the hell happened here?”
“It doesn’t have to be like this.”
“I don’t need to be saved.”
“Just shut up and listen.”
“It’s nice to feel wanted for once.”
“I could be perfect for you.”
“You have to stop working so hard.”
“I’m on the verge of breaking down!”
“Only you could make me swoon at something so corny.”
“I just wanna sleep.”
“Can you ever forgive me?”
“Things are gonna get better, I promise.”
“You’re such a lightweight, it’s adorable.”
“This thing has been following me everywhere.”
“That can’t be healthy.”
“Where am I? Why are we naked?”
“I made this for you.”
“Oh my god, I’ve been so stupid.”
“That shouldn’t be arousing, and yet…”
“You didn’t really think I’d forget, did you?”
“Please don’t leave.”
“I can’t believe you actually did that.”
“Oh, you’re drunk drunk.”
“I wasn’t staring at your ass! I mean… I was, but I was trying to be subtle.”
“You don’t know me as well as you think you do.”
“At least you’re pretty.”
“When did that happen?”
“You sure know how to keep me on my toes.”
“There’s something I should’ve told you.”
“You’re too good to be in a place like this.”
“I don’t know who I am anymore.”
“That face won’t work on me, babe.”
“You did all of this for me?”
“I’m not saying making out would help, but it couldn’t hurt.”
“You are exhausting sometimes.”
“You little brat.”
“I want to be there so you don’t have to be brave.”
“What’s in it for me?”
“I am giving you one chance to explain yourself.”
“Wow, I’ve never been anywhere so fancy.”
“C’mon, live a little.”
“I have to go.”
“I can’t look at you, it’s like staring into the sun.”
“Don’t touch me!”
“Pack a bag, let’s get out of here.”
“I don’t belong here.”
“Sorry, I think I’m lost.”
“I’m in love with you.”
“Damn, when did you get hot?”
“I miss what we used to be.”
“You don’t have to say you love me.”
“I didn’t know where else to go.”
“No one's gonna hurt you while I’m around.”
“You’re a mess, come inside.”
“I thought I knew what falling in love felt like before I met you.”
“It’s all coming back to me now.”
“I just… I couldn’t do it.”
“Listen, I love Britney Spears as much as the next person, but we have to put a curfew on your singing along.”
“I don’t have anything figured out.”
“Take a chance on me.”
“How long have you been there?”
“I think I’m finally ready for love.”
“Maybe in another life, we would’ve been perfect together.”
“I can’t explain all the things you make me feel.”
“You look familiar.”
“I hate how lonely I’ve become.”
“Come a little closer, baby.”
“I’ll wait for you, I always do.”
“There is a completely normal explanation for this, I swear.”
“It’s too early for this shit.”
“I don’t wanna talk.”
“You’re the most important thing in my life.”
“What are you staring at?”
“By the way, you were my first.”
“You knew I loved you.”
“I realized I was trying to make my life into a movie, but the story continues after the happy ending.”
“So all of this meant nothing to you?”
“I plead the fifth.”
“You have no idea how badly I need you.”
“I didn’t think it would get this bad.”
“Hey. Turn around.”
“Um, sorry about your friend.”
“Can I make it up to you?”
“This just doesn’t feel right.”
“I just want a fairytale ending after everything I’ve been through.”
“Take care of yourself.”
“Could you relax for like, five minutes? For once?”
“I… wow, you look incredible.”
“Let’s go back to my place.”
“I’m not high enough for this.”
“Why do you hate me?”
“Fuck this, I’m out.”

When the moon became an eye
The night when the moon became an eye I'd say everything changed. The earth went to sleep, but when he woke up.. his mother was gone, replaced by a giant eye that had a cold, eerie stare.
October 23rd, 2028
My bed was cozy on a cool spring morning, I didn’t wanna get up but I remembered that I had a couple of chores to do before I headed to school. I wanted to get a head start on today so I wouldn’t have to stress my house-bound mother out. She’d been bound since I had graduated from middle school; that’s when dad just left because he didn’t want to “deal with her disabilities”. I’ve been taking care of her and myself ever since. It was 5:44 AM the time that I peeked out the curtains and realized there was no moonlight outside, on a supermoon night. I didn’t think much of it so I continued with my morning routine, same old thing. After I was done with the dishes, at 6:15 AM I walked over to my mother's room to give her medicine. Walking into her room, she abruptly awoke, “I hope I didn’t scare you ‘ma..” I said feeling a bit bad as she’s such an old woman; my mother chuckled a bit, “Oh no dear, you’re just fine I was just dozing off waiting for you but then you came in and it just surprised little old me”. I nodded to her, “If you say so ‘ma..” I lifted her up by adding another pillow behind her and I gave her 2 pills and a glass of water. “I’ll be back to check on you before I leave, alright?” I stated, my mother nodded at me and smiled “Don’t go too hard on yourself.” I smiled at her and walked out of her room, closing the door behind me gently. I went to check the clock, at 6:23 AM. I gasped, realizing I had to be ready and out the door by 6:45. I hurriedly brushed my teeth, popped my pills in my mouth, and grabbed my backpack & car keys. “Bye ‘ma!” On my drive over, I let out a sigh of relief, my teachers would kill me if I was late another day, I thought to myself. I felt horrible for leaving my mom without checking on her like I promised, I’ll make her some cookies when I get home in order to make it up to her. Getting to the school gate at 6:50. Right on time. I checked in with the guard and pulled into my parking spot. I hurriedly put some mascara and blush on that I had grabbed on my way out of the house. I walked out of my car and into the school building, I walked up to the front office and scanned myself in; on the way over to my class I was thinking.. What should I make for dinner tonight? Maybe I can invite Elise and Lily over to help me bake dinner and those cookies for my mom. Elise and Lily have been my friends since elementary school, we all met in third grade and have been friends ever since, I still remember the time in middle school when Elise had beat up this one girl… all because she was flirting with Lily’s boyfriend. Elise is so protective, Lily couldn’t do anything herself because she really isn’t like that; poor Lily would’ve just sat back and done nothing if it weren’t for Elise. In all honesty I think Elise might secretly have a little crush on Lily. I got to my first-period class, Medical. I really don’t dislike the class, but my mom was the one who made me join it, just doing it to make her happy. I greeted Mrs. Leciz, “Morning Miss, how’s your morning?” Mrs. Leciz rolled her eyes at me, “Yes, yes Nayana you’re not gonna get away with that missed report you still haven’t turned in to me, other than that I’m having a usual morning.” I shyly backed away and sat down at my seat in the back, next to Vanessa. I don’t know much about Vanessa, but from what went around last year, she slept with her best friend's dad… pretty disgusting honestly, and might I add illegal? The dad got locked up and his daughter got in a catfight with Vanessa; she left a NASTY mark on Vanessa. She got her jaw broken, from what I heard it was a very brutal fight. It’s good to see her doing better now though; other than that incident, she was just a quiet person; still can’t believe she’d do that though. “Alright, seems like only half of you are here today so I’ll just let you make up the work you need to get done in other classes” Mrs. Leciz voiced, I rolled my eyes realizing I seriously had nothing else to do in any other classes. In all of the other classes, I have just been given literal coloring sheets.. -

Can I - Bakugou
guess who can’t keep up with a series but has hella ideas for one shots :)
summary: based off the song Can I by Kehlani, i literally love that song and I think of bakugou every time i hear it.
warnings: some smut (MDNI), cursing, teasing, cheating, mentions of sex
Your body drops down on to the bed as you try catching your breath. You look up at the man above you, also trying to catch his breath. He sits on his knees and lightly rubs your thighs.
“Your pussy should be illegal brat” He chuckles, moving to stand up.
You reached out and grab his bicep before he gets to far away.
“Don’t tell me we’re stopping at just one round? I want the sequel Katsuki” You tease, doing your best to keep the man in your bed. It wasn’t your fault he was a complete sex god and knew exactly how to make you come apart in minutes.
He bites his lip in contemplation, checking the time on his phone before shutting it off.
“Fine but i’ve gotta be outta here in 2 hours, so no more begging” He states, crawling back over you.
“You love it when I beg” You pull him in for a kiss and oust your hips back into him and just like that, you’re both launched back into a state of ecstasy for another couple hours, responsibilities put on the back burner once again.
———————
“Hey extras, what’d i miss” You say, plopping down at your friend groups lunch table.
“God you’re starting to sound like bakugou” Kaminari states rolling his eyes.
“Speaking of, where is he?” Mina asks
“Him and Ochako said they’d be a few minutes late, she’s talking to a teacher i think” Kirishima responds, taking a huge bite of food.
“So they’re official now?” Mina asks, causing the table to dive into gossip as usual. Everyone adding their opinions. You decided to keep some things to yourself but couldn’t hide the smugness you felt knowing what you and katsuki have.
The gossip session chimes down as the aforementioned couple approaches the table. We all talk and make weekend plans for a few minutes before Bakugou says he’s throwing a party at his place.
“You? You’re throwing a party? You’re actually gonna let tons of shitty idiots into your place? Hah ya right” You laugh at the idea.
“Using my words huh? Some might think you’re a little obsessed with me y/n?” Bakugou quips back.
“Oh please, everyone knows you’re madly in love with me and are too scared to confess” You chuckle.
Ochako stands up and walks away, taking her lunch tray with her. No one says anything but we all look to Bakugou.
“She’ll be fine” He grunts, mumbling about the pain in the ass he calls his girlfriend. Everyone moves on and begins talking about their outfits for the party.
“Why don’t you just tell your girlfriend that your single?” You smirk leaning closer to Katsuki.
“I don’t understand how everyone thinks you’re a sweet little angel, but really you’re a evil pornstar tryna fuck me every chance you get” He growls in your ear.
Ochako comes back with no lunch and a water bottle, sitting close to katsuki. You stand and pack up your mess.
“Alright bro, i gotta hit the library, game tonight?” You dap up all the boys in your group winking at Mina before leaving, putting a bit of extra swish in your hips, knowing who’s watching.
“How the fuck did you even meet her and why does she hang around?” Ochako spits at Bakugou.
“She’s one of the bros, relax” He rolls his eyes, moving to busy himself on his phone. He checks his notifications and sees a text from you.
shitty girl 🙄
You look stressed :( need head?
i know it’s ur fav
You’re being a little loud with your feelings baby
Fuck you, i’m coming over
He smiles locking his phone, he stands and throws his lunch away, telling his girlfriend some excuse about the gym before walking back to his room.
He pushes open his door and sees you laying in his bed on your stomach, reading a book while kicking your feet. He grabs your ankle and pulls you down to him. He flips you over and grabs your neck.
“You gonna be nice and quiet for me?” He immediately dips into your neck.
“No promises. Why’d you wear a white shirt? Just gonna be soaked through with my juices.” You smirk back.
“We’ll see about that.” He laughs, setting his phone on the bedside table.
“Making a sex tape Dynamight?”
“you bet your ass i am” He says his attention back on you.
——————
You and mina finish up your outfits and makeup, checking eachother to make sure you look your absolute best. You take an uber from Minas apartment to Bakugous, bottles in hand.
You knock on the door, and are greeted by bakugou in a black t-shirt, gold chain and jeans. It’s blows your mind how hot he can look in a simple outfit.
“Who the fuck are you” He jokes.
“Hi i’m Hell, nice to meet ya” You wink handing him the bottle and slipping in the door.
“You know you’re fucking with a demon, i want you on your best behavior tonight or else” Katsuki growls quietly in your ear as you stand in the kitchen making a drink.
“Anything to please you King Explosion Murder” You joke, walking away to join the rest of your friends.
You end up in the same place you’re always in when you party with bakugou, bent over the bathroom sink, brain melting at the pleasure.
“Fuck i’m close baby, where ya want me?” Bakugou grunts, pace never faltering.
“Inside me please” You cry out
“Fuck such a good little slut, want to make a daddy yea?” He groans while finishing. You both clean eachother up and head back to the party as normal as possible.
——————-
After a few hours, everyone has moved back to their respective homes. You couldn’t help but think about Katsuki, you’d gotten used to him being in your bed until you fell asleep, even if he was gone by the morning.
Your phone began to ring, pulling you out of your thoughts. It’s Bakugou.
“Hey Suki”
“Can I stop by?” He whispers
“why are you whispering?”
“Ochakos sleeping in my bed, can i please. Need to see you tonight”
“You’ve already seen me Suki, you can come over but, we can’t keep doing this” You sigh. He agrees then hangs up. Moments later there’s a light knock on your door. As soon as you open it, you’re swooped up in a kiss.
“I need you, not just in the sex way, but like I need you. I don’t want her, just wanted to make Deku jealous. Want you” He speaks in between kisses.
“Can we figure out the logistics after please Suki?” You beg.
“Of course baby, after” He pulls you down the hall and into the bed, beginning the same dance you’ve become so used too.

Mean (JJK x Reader) 💜☁️✴️🔞
Tumblr media
💸 Pairing: Jeon Jungkook x Reader
💸 Genre: Mafia!AU, Single Parent AU!, Angst, fluff, Smut
💸 Warnings: bad language aka cursing, mentions of cheating, mentions of illegal business, manhandling and not the nice kind, tsundere Jungkook, it’s not like he likes you duh, guns, description of violence, restriction of movement and not in a kinky way, protected sex because dude he’s got one kid okay that’s enough, unconventional romance, choking, near death experience, angst did I mention angst
💸 Summary: Jeon Jungkook was kinda cute, you had to admit that- but he was also a massive douchebag with his head up his ass. And a cute kid.
A/N: First of all, I want to apologize to anyone I might dissapoint with this. I've changed up the story concept numerous times- and the first trailer is in no way a proper teaser anymore, since it has nothing to do with this story anymore. I somehow hope you still enjoy the story however. If not- I hope you'll stick around for future content!
Taglist: @drumsofheaven @yzkyzkuniverse @strwberrybtch @kirbykook @teresaisla @park-hera-gi @justzeera @taestannie @bambuzlee (there were several people I couldn’t tag- I’m sorry about that!)
Tumblr media
Jeon Jungkook was facing his worst enemy.
Now, considering his work and all those rumors going on about him, this could be anything really; from an entire army storming his house, to readying himself for waterboarding. But no, this enemy he was currently standing across from was way more vile and difficult to get under control. The situation was slowly growing desperate on his side- this was a life and death situation.
"Mina, come on now." Jungkook pleaded as the toddler vehemently refused to raise her arms properly so he could slip on her dress for the day. He could understand her, to an extend- he wasn't a morning person either, but he had to overcome this in order to be successful- and she had to as well.
Well, success was not really that important at her age, but getting her to daycare definitely was.
"Mina I have a meeting soon and if you continue to be a brat I can't send you off again properly." He tried, knowing how much she hated him leaving in a rush like usually. He'd promised her the day prior as he'd tucked her into bed that he would, this time, at least stay until her friends had arrived, yet he couldn't have known that this situation would occur the next morning.
Sometimes being a single father was way worse than anything he was facing at his actual job.
"There we go!" He cheered as she finally caved in, pouting a bit before she giggled at the silly face her father was making in order to get her to smile. He hated sending her off in a foul mood, knowing that she could be an absolute devil's child if she felt like it. In a way, she was very similar to him, which was to be expected with her mother not being in the picture. He didn't mind it much, however- a cheating spouse was not really what he wanted by his side, if he was being entirely honest with himself. It was enough already knowing that almost all of his 'friends' and 'business partners' were shameless liars. He didn't need to live and raise a child with one as well.
"Tiger!" The young girl cheerfully exclaimed, as the both made their way into the kitchen. It wasn't just a random comment from her side, because her chubby hand already pointed at the cereal box designed with colorful images on the counter, way too high for her but perfectly reachable for her father as he chuckled, balancing her on his hip as he prepared a small bowl for her.
"No funny business though, young lady." He said, as he sat down with her at the table. "We don't have to hurry, but we can't waste time either." He explained, as he watched her eat her breakfast with a concentrated face. He smiled at the picture, sometimes wishing this would be how his days would always start. Sadly, that wasn't the case- most of the times really, her nanny took her to daycare.
Which was another problem.
Her nanny had recently filed in for her termination, her age getting to her as she finally made the decision to settle down for her last years of life, she'd said. He accepted it without much resistance, having build too much respect for the elderly woman over the course of time by now. It left him with a gaping hole however, one that he knew he needed to fill.
But with who?
He couldn't just hire anybody for Mina at this point in his life. People needed to be fully trustworthy to be even given knowledge of his child at all. Most didn't even know she existed- the public unaware of her relation to him. He kept the facade up that she was merely the child of a close friend, just to keep her out of range of any potential enemies he had gathered over time.
His life really wasn't fit for a child at all, but what was he supposed to do?
Tumblr media
"Y/N!" A small voice exclaimed behind you, making you look around from where you were cutting apples as the small child appeared.
"Mina!" You answered just as brightly, picking her up as she giggled excitedly. "Did you have breakfast yet?" You asked, as another daycare worker came inside.
"Yeah!" She said, and you looked at her surprised. "Daddy and I had breakfast!" She explained, as you placed her back down onto the ground. "He'ven brought me here today!" She said, and you hummed affirmatively,
"That sounds awesome!" You said, as she beamed up at you. "Why don't you go sit at the table, we're almost having our morning snack. You think you can eat some apples?" You asked, and she proudly nodded, before zooming off, stumbling a bit as she missed the slight gap of the door.
"He didn't come inside." Jenny said, as she watched the little girl sit down next to a boy her age. "I saw that he was sitting in his car, but she got out herself." She explained further, as you continued cutting the apples and making some cuts to have them resemble a bunny. "I swear to god-" She started, as you cut her off.
"We don't know what his life is like, Jenny." You said, as she huffed. "It's not our kid, it's not our life. She isn't unhappy, she's healthy, she's not mistreated. Case closed." You explained further as you discarded the scraps of apple unneeded in the trash, before rinsing the knife you'd used. "I'm not too happy about it either, but we're not her mother." You said, as you dried your hands.
Jenny sighed. "I know, but like-" She said, walking over to you to help you place the banana slices and grapes as well. "She's such a sweet kid. I don't know, but he seems like such a dick honestly. Like, have you heard his phonecall last week?" You snorted. Everyone did at this point.
Mina had had a minor incident, when she'd stumbled and fell. She'd scraped her knee, cried a little, but after a moment everything had been fine again. He however, had been livid upon finding out his daughter had been hurt, even though the scratches didn't even need a bandaid. Even though he'd only been on the phone with your superior, he'd made such a scene out of it that it became like local news around the daycare.
"I still don't know what the fuck that was about." Jenny exclaimed, taking a sip of her coffee as she kept an eye on the kids in the main room. "Like, yeah, she fell, but nothing happened." She said, and you agreed.
Shrugging, you grabbed some plates and napkins, and looked at Jenny. "Again." You reminded her. "As harsh as it sounds, you know me." Jenny sighed.
"I know."
Tumblr media
You took back everything you had said this morning.
This prick had the audacity to keep you waiting for more than two hours now, without reacting to any amount of phonecalls you'd done by now. Mina was almost asleep on your lap, and you were angry to say the least. This was supposed to be your last day of work for a week, you were supposed to be curled up on your couch in nothing but underwear and fluffy socks, hidden by a blanket and eating icecream while watching netflix. You were definitely not supposed to sit here at your daycare until even the janitor was about to go home. "Fuck it." You mumble, carefully balancing the young girl on your hip as you grab your bag and keys.
You wave the janitor and cleaning staff goodbye on their way out, and take out your phone for a bus or subway that could drive close to where Mina's address is- but you notice there is nothing in her jacket written that you could use as one. You instead simply call the number written down for emergencies, and wait as it rings.
once.
twice.
"Hello?"
You are a bit taken aback by the voice on the other line, masculine, but clearly not as old as you'd thought he'd sound. "Uh, yeah, this is Mina's daycare, you mind picking her up these days, or not?" You casually say, Mina moving around a bit as to bring her thumb close to her lips. You internally coo at her.
"Shit! Fuck- I, where are you?" He asks, and you furrow your brows. Where the hell does he think you are, or does he seriously not know where his daughters daycare is? Wait, is that even her father?
"I- listen, am I even talking to her father or who is this?" You ask, and suddenly you feel extremely uncomfortable. This was a bad idea, what if this isnt her dad at all? You could loose your job for this!
"Yeah, yes. Listen I'm gonna send someone to pick her up alright? Should be there in an hour or so." He says as if frustrated, and you scoff, making him question you on the other line as if he was just struck by thunder. "Excuse me?" He says, voice low, but you're not intimitated.
"First of all, I'm not convinced. Second of all, and pardon my french, but are you nuts?! It's already way too late for her to be up, and I've finished my shift hours ago!" You complain, and he clears his throat over the line, clearly unhappy about your lack of understanding.
"Jeon Mina has a small beauty mark underneath her lower lip, she hates strawberries for some reason, and her biggest secret is that she is actually scared of unicorns. There, happy?" He grits out, and you chew on your lip. He was good. "Second of all, Miss." He makes sure to pronounce every word. "You're getting paid to look after my kid. If that's all you want I'm paying you extra for the inconvenience-" Oh boy, there we go.
"If I cared about your stupid money I would've called authorities hours ago, S.I.R." You start, careful to tone your voice down as to not wake her up. "And you know what, thats a great Idea actually! Let me just-" You begin, but he cuts you off with a sound that sounds awfully like a door closing.
"Fuck you, I'm there in 20." He says.

Jeon Jungkook was not too fond of woman.
That much was clear ever since he'd been cheated on and left with a kid, but it had always been like that. It wasn't like he was afraid of them, or didn't like them, it was more like, during his life, woman had been the reason for heartbreak and bad news all along. His mother had been an alcoholic, his dad desperately trying to get her back on track. His sister had been involved into shady business early on, a wild child that would do anything to get on peoples nerves. His aunt, which only ever visited to gain money. Women were bad news.
So his own surprise had been very prominent when he spotted you on the bench with his kid in your arms, her chubby arms clinging onto you like a koala. You seemed to be reading something on your phone, careful not to point the device too close to Mina so she wouldn't be disturbed. You were pretty, he had to admit that, even from far away- and you seemed like a confident person, from what he'd heard over the phone. You suddenly noticed him as he drove a bit closer, car tires crunching the gravel and snow underneath while his headlights shut off, to not blind you both. He stepped out, as you woke Mina up to announce to her that her father had finally arrived.
"Daddy!" She screached sleepily, running towards him with stumbling legs. He picked her up with a smile before he turned around, having every intention to buckle her up in his backseat as you came closer.
"Huh. Mind telling me why I shouldn't inform authorities about this?" You asked, and he huffed out a breath with a roll of his eyes, pulling out his wallet. You simply stood there, arms crossed, not at all fazed by the amount of money he held in front of you- you simply raised your eyebrow. "I mean, if money could talk I'd ask your bills, sure. But that right there isn't an answer." You replied, and he gritted his teeth, jaw clenching. Why were you being so difficult.
"Okay, how much?" He said, and you suddenly moved, shifted, as if absolutely offended by his offer.
"Do I look like a streetworker to you sir?" You said, and he closed his eyes for a moment, until another car seemed to pull up.
"You're getting picked up." He says, ready to step into his car as you look at him with confusion. "You don't know them?" He asks, and you shake your head, having every intention to check as he notices something familiar peeking out of one of the car windows. As if on autopilot, he rips his passenger side open, pushes you in, and runs to get inside the drivers seat.
There are shots fired, Mina is holding her hands over her ears as she simply stares at you, who is absolutely shell-shocked.
What the hell just happened?
Tumblr media
So yeah, that's how you got here-
In a room that looked awfully like the interrogation rooms in your late night netflix crime shows. There was someone sitting in front of you- Mina's father, watching you, like you were going to do anything. But you were as quiet as a mouse, not saying anything.
"So you didn't know them? At all?" He questioned for the second time in the past ten minutes, and you shook your head. "Hard to believe. Then again, why would you ever tell me that your Dad's brother was sentenced to two years for escorting drugs- only getting two years because he snitched." He said, and your eyes widened.
"Okay what the hell-" You started, but he cut you off.
"Oh, I hit a nerve-" But you weren't having it.
"Oh an I'm gonna hit your pretty nose if you don't stop cutting me off!" You said, making him smirk. For some reason, this was quite entertaining to him- the only woman he ever had in here were so keen on keeping up that shy and innocent facade, that you were a breath of fresh air. "Listen, I don't know why you decided to dig up things that happened when I was literally a TODDLER- or how you even got that information - I swear to god I will really break your nose!" You ended as he had tried to speak again, making him chuckle.
If you weren't being held captive after getting your night ruined you might as well would've thought that was pretty hot.
"I was five years old- I had nothing to do with it, and my dad had no contact whatsoever with his brother after what had happened." You explained. "If you can find that, you can also find that I haven't had contact with my family in years either." You said, leaning back, as he spoke.
"I did. Which is quite confusing to me." He said.
You suddenly went stone cold on him. "It really isnt that deep." You said.
"Were you avoiding them?" He asked. "Because of what happened? Or because your dad got involved into something?"
"Because they're dead." You said.
Well. This was something that made him actually stop and think for a second. He did dig into that nasty part of your family, but he never looked further- their death was something he had overlooked. And by your reaction as you said it, the way you said it, he knew that you weren't lying. "Alright." He said. "But you do realize that I can't just let you go like that, right?" He said.
"Figured." You said. "So, should I stand facing against the wall or with my back against it so you can aim better?" You said, and he took a deep breath. Technically, yes, that would be a logical outcome.
"Neither." He said, and you raised your eyebrow. "I have an offering." He said, and your entire body went stiff, arms crossing in front of your chest. A pure sign of whatever he was going to say, your first reaction would be no. "I need a nanny for Mina." He said, and your lips parted, confusion clear on your face.
He almost thought it was kind of cute.
"You what?" You said.
"I need a nanny for Mina." He repeated. "It's a win-win situation for both of us if you think about it. You get to- in a way- keep your job and a bonus in terms of payment, and I will have someone to take care of Mina. And I also don't have to put a bullet into your pretty little head." He said, leaning forward with the last words.
"This isn't really a question, isn't it?" You said, and he laughed.
"You're smart- I like you."
Tumblr media
„But that’s not how daddy does it..“ she wonders, as you tie her shoes for her, before looking up into her eyes. She really does resemble her father. Well, a more innocent version, that is.
„Well everyone does it differently.“ you say, well aware that there were numerous ways to tie a simple bow. „Your daddy probably has learned it from someone who does it like he does. I learned it from my dad.“ you explained as you went to pick up her backpack, carrying it for her as she took your hand.
„yours looks prettier tho!“ she exclaimed happily, a skip in her step as she kept looking at her shoes with a smile. You grinned, a sense of pride filling you. „Daddy‘s always looks crooked on one side-„ she said, before a voice broke through the sweet moment.
„You hurt me Princess. You always said they look nice.“ he hummed from his spot in the doorway, leaned on the frame, looking at you with something you could only describe as unsatisfied, while shooting his daughter a smile.
What the hell have you done wrong now?
This had been something going on for months now. Ever since you started working for him as a nanny, Mina had been nothing but a ray of sunshine- but he, he was not even a raincloud. He was the angry grinch miltiplied by a hundred, ready to piss everyone off twenty-five-eight. Somehow everything you did wasn't up to his standards; the way you cooked for Mina, the way you dressed her, hell, even right now with the way you tied a fucking bow.
You really hoped next time he washed his hands, his sleeves would roll down.
"There's an emergency gun underneath the back-" He started as Mina was out of listening-reach.
"I won't use it." You said.
Jungkook had tried to get you trained at least in the basics of guns- but you practically had an allergy to it, refusing to so much as touch one. He didn't quite know what your problem was, but after a while, he had given up on it- simply sending one of his guards with you whenever he could. By now, you were an easy target as well if found alone, so you had joined him in his place, occupying one of the larger guest rooms. He had said that it was to keep an eye on you, but internally, he simply didn't want you to get hurt.
And yeah, at first that was because he didn't trust you, at all- but by now, somehow, you had sneaked your way into his heart, in a way. Even though he himself would always grumpily comment on it, he loved how you made Mina smile and the entire mansion light up. Things felt a little brighter, a little less tense, and a little less lonely with you around. It felt as if you were an actual family.
And that scared the shit out of him, because in no way was he going to fall for his daughters nanny.
And, after all; you hated his guts.
Tumblr media
If Jungkook knew the situation you and Mina had gotten yourselves into, you don't know if he would be proud of her or kill you.
Turns out that the guard Jungkook had sent you out with wasn't actually following his orders at all, but words from a different person entirely- you imagined they were highly likely the one's out to shoot you back when you first met the tall mafia boss and father. Now, the only thing they definitely did not get right however, was that you were Mina's mother- and someone Jungkook valued enough to give up his safety. This was true for Mina; the young child was his everything, and he'd cut off his limbs just to know her safe and sound- but you? That was just absolutely stupid. Sure, you've been living together for quite some time now, and he stopped trying to mentally push you down the stairs every morning as well. But there was nothing more than a mild case of friend- and partnership. You weren't being emo; Jungkook had, after all, said it again and again that he had crossed out the dating game. He's got enough trouble with Mina and you, he had said.
Well, seemed like one of those issues would solve itself.
"Again, what're you gonna do?" You say, as Mina looks at you from out of the vents above you had helped her into seconds ago.
"Crawl where the nice air is, call daddy- and don't look back." She repeats proudly, but you can see it clearly that she's just as scared as you are.
"Exactly, good job princess." You praise, and she nods with a pout. "Once daddy gets you, you'll be safe." You promise, and she wants to complain- but you don't let her, closing the vent again as you hear her shuffling away. This was fine. Mina would be safe, Jungkook would have one person less to worry about- he could move away, bring her to a different part of the country where no one knew her, and she could simply go to school next year and forget all of this ever happened.
You were just a bit sad that you'd never get to see it.
Of course you weren't her mother- but it was hard not to let her inside your heart, with the way she was. The charms her dad didn't have, she got them times ten. She was just so sweet, and you were around her all the time, it was hard not to somehow grow fond of her. You just hoped she'd be alright.
"Where's the kid, whore?!" A guard yelled after noticing you were the only one left in the room. You simply smiled, not answering, before he grabbed your neck, pulling you up as much as he could as he fumed. "Save that stupid grin for your son of a bitch at home." He barks, and you desperately try to breathe- unsuccessfully so, until he forcefully pushes you back down, the back of your head hiding the concrete floor with a sickening crack. You squealed out in pain, holding onto the spot for dear life as if that would somehow help it- but it didn't. "I knew sluts like you have to be tied up. You're all just trouble." He says, pulling you by your legs as another set of people come in, binding your legs and hands. You can already feel your fingers getting cold from how tight your wrists are tied- but you black out from the kick to your stomach before you can quite dwell on it.
Tumblr media
"Fuck!" He yells, before he gets up, hands in his hair to somehow help himself not punch the laptop on his table. He's seen it, seen it all- from the moments you would shield Mina like a fearless lioness, the second you had lifted her up into the vents even though he knew your shoulder had to be in horrible pain, to the very moment you had faced the consequences of your actions. He hated that he had to wait, that he had to simply sit here in his office like a coward just to watch you take the beatings.
Because here was the thing with Jungkook; even though he liked to portray himself as someone who always takes the upper hand in things and troubles, when it came to his own personal life far away from his criminal business he ran, he couldn't seem to ever make up his mind. It was like a repeat of his past love affair- but instead of his ex-wife cheating and leaving him with a child, there was you, in some way fighting like a true lionness in order to keep said child safe and sound, even though you didn't even had to. Technically, this would've been the perfect opportunity for you to finally get your freedom back in a way. Because without Mina, there was no use for you being in his grasp anymore. Without her, there was no agreement between the two of you.
And yet there you were. And yet again, he simply watched, simply did nothing.
The entire mansion was already on high alert by now; his most trusted friends Seokjin and Yoongi already out to your location- he could wait. He could wait. He could wait.
Everything would somehow turn out to be just fine by the end of this day. He would successfully take his daughter into his arms, Yoongi and Seokjin would get you out of there, and after a good nights sleep and some first aid for you, things would just return to normal.
But what was normal at this point?
He didn't want things to continue like they did currently. He wanted change, for the first time in his life. He wanted to tell you about his inner thoughts, about his desires concerning you and his future. He wanted to tell you that he didn't just want you to be at his home and with him and his daughter just because of some stupid agreement. He didn't want you to stay with him because he forced you to.
His phone began to chime, your face greeting him as the caller ID as he accepts it. "Daddy-" His heart sinks down to the floor as he hears Mina sniffle on the other side of the line. He has to wait, he thinks, repeats like a mantra. He has to somehow calm her down, tell her everything's alright- "They're hurting mommy!" Mina wails, and somehow, those words make him snap.
Fuck waiting.
Tumblr media
In a way, Mina was a smart kid. She had been nothing but understanding when Jungkook and her mother had broken up- divorced, and fought until she eventually left for good. She had been a little sad for a long time, thinking it had somehow been her fault; but he had assured her, and later on, explained, that Mommy simply didn't love Daddy anymore. In Daycare, she was one of the most well behaved kids ever encountered- careful, and calm. Of course she got excited and happy and sometimes made a mess; but she also was very careful who she interacted with, what kinds of friends she made, and how much she talked about home. She never complained, never threw public tantrums.
Jungkook truly was lucky- that the only thing left of his shattered marriage had been her.
He never had relationships after that- never dated, never truly searched for someone. No one, in his eyes, was worth the risk- and even after meeting you, that was his opinion. But as cliche as it sounded, you were quite different from anyone he'd ever met before.
You spoke your mind; always saying what bothered you, never beating around the bush. Yet, you weren't being a bitch about things. No, you actually could be pretty cute if you wanted to be- be it the moments he had caught you and Mina sneak a taste of her birthday cake in the middle of the night, or the one time he had been sick.
You had been such an angel to him.
Helping him towards the bathroom, never even scrunching your nose in distaste whenever he had to throw up. You simply rubbed his back, helping him towards the sink to rinse, just to lead him back into his bedroom. You had aired the room out, made the bed, made sure that he was staying hydrated and at least tried to eat every day- all without any complains.
Maybe that was the moment his perspective of you shifted into dangerous territory.
He had somehow become hyperaware of the things you did. How well you got along with Mina, how easy going you were becoming with him- how confident yet nurturing and sweet you were, gently scolding him sometimes to not overwork himself. You always made sure his kid felt happy and was healthy, never so much as whined about your past friendships lost; you had simply accepted the new situation.
In a way, you were what he silently dreamed of at night.
Because as much as he loved the sight of you holding Mina whenever she had a nightmare and couldn't sleep, he somehow also craved to be held throughout the night by your arms. Just like he held his daughter in that moment after she had climbed out of the vent into his arms. He could make out some of her words as he simply let himself feel her tiny body in his arms for a moment. Just to make sure she was really there, really alright, really out of harms way. She kept on crying out for you, for him to help you, to save you-
So it was only natural for him to jump out of his car and run after Seokjin, Yoongi, and their squad, as they entered the building.
Tumblr media
Sometimes at night, when you got aware of all the different sounds of the room, you heard the blood rush inside your brain.
Just like now; but now, it was so loud that you could barely hear anything else. Things seemed hazy, fuzzy, your ears stuffed with cotton wool drowning out any sounds might happening around you. Your eyes stayed closed, light way too bright for your raging headache- and the stale metal taste on your tongue wasn't helping either. Your hands had started to tingle long ago, and your knees were hurting from being in the same position for this long. But the moment someone touched you next, it wasn't forceful. It was so gentle, and almost- scared?
You couldn't hear, but you could feel. How the rope was cut, blood rushing painfully into your hands and legs again, pins and needles making them hypersensitive as you were suddenly held- moved, carried?
It smelled like home, that was something your dizzy mind was able to properly make out. It smelled like Jungkooks mansion, and a bit like his office- a faint vanilla hitting your senses, making you faintly smile as your hand reached out, unknowingly grabbing his shirt, holding the fabric as tight as you could as you moaned out in pain when he placed you down again, warmth surrounding you.
Maybe you were dying?
Or maybe not.
Because after some hazy and confusing dreams, you slowly came back to your senses. Eyes opening slowly, there it was; the curtains you knew so well, the balcony opened, air crisp and fresh around you as the door opened. You wanted to move your head, but the fear of triggering another headache was too big.
"Y/N?" Jungkooks voice asked, warm, and almost hesitant. You hummed, and he snapped his head around, noticing that yes- after days of sleeping and slipping in and out of consciousness you were actually awake again. He walked into your field of vision, looking so casual; his white button up undone at the first two buttons, sleeves rolled up as he sat down close to you, palm on the blanket covering you as he-
smiled?
"W-" You had to cough a bit before clearing your throat. "Who are you and what have you done to Jungkook?" You said, and he chuckled, sighing in relief- you had, after all, not lost your charm.
"I think past Jungkook had a moment of self-reflection." He said, watching you as his hand placed itself onto yours, warmth spreading over your skin. "I'm glad you're okay." He admitted. "And thank you. For keeping.. Mina safe." He ended, and you smiled.
"That's literally my job." You said, and he got more serious.
"No, and you know what I mean." His voice was deep and rough, yet held no authority like usual. "You had chances to tell them who you were. That you had no connection to me other than through her; yet you didn't. And we both know why." He said, and you looked at him.
"There are more reasons than just one." You said, eyes drifting to his now empty ring finger on the hand resting on his thigh.
"Does it matter which one I mean?" He asked, and you wanted to scoff.
"It does to me." You said, and he shifted closer after a second, properly holding your hand now as he looked at yours- still a little scratched, but nothing that wouldn't heal.
"You did it because that's the reason you live here." He said. "You also did it because you adore her just as much as I do. And you.." He began, but grew unsure.
"And I?" You smiled, and he looked at you with his typical seriousness.
"And you somehow got stuck in an emotional mess." He explained. "You somehow, deep down, wanted it to be true." His thumb moved over the back of your hand as he spoke. "You wished that.. maybe there was more to it than just, partnership." He said, and you still smiled gently.
"Did I now?" You teased, but to your surprise, he was still looking straight at you.
"I know I did." He humms out. "I still do."
"You're stupid." You said, and he laughed bitterly, taking your words the wrong way as he slipped his out of yours.
"I know." He said, getting up to leave but stopped as you spoke.
"Good." You said, chuckling before coughing. "What, no kiss for me after all I've been through?" You giggled as his wide eyes stared at you. "Rude." You said, and he suddenly realized that no- you weren't rejecting him. You were accepting.
You felt the same.
Noticing his own awkwardness, he leaned over, hands supporting his body as he leaned down, properly placing his lips onto yours. You had never imagined what kissing Jungkook would feel like, but you certainly would've never guessed how gentle and absolutely loving it would be. One of his hands moved towards your cheek, holding it, as if you were the most precious thing he'd ever seen.
"Mommy!" Came Mina's excited voice, cries instantly noticable as she jumped onto the bed, burying her head into your chest as you held her, a few tears in your eyes from her jumping.
"Mina baby, be careful okay?" He said. But your words were the reason that he ended up tearing up, at the end.
"Mommy's still hurting baby." You said. "But she'll get better soon."
Tumblr media
Not even during the first few magical months of being together with his past ex, had it ever felt like this.
He was euphoric almost; with the way you felt, moved, breathed. It all felt like so much to him, made him feel so.. He couldn't explain it. He had his hands on your hips, fingers careful not to press too hard, but having enough force to move you back and forth over his lap- his length moving in and out of your heat, making you whine, as he watched your breasts in front of him. You fit so perfectly like this, felt so amazing, managed to make him feel needy instead of the other way around.
He turned you over slipping out of you sloppily as he moved positions, now above you as he spread your legs, entering you again easily. He pulled you by your thighs, holding you in place as he began to thrust again, your eyes closing with every movement of his hips.
He loved the sight of it.
Deep down he wanted to take the condom off; he wanted to fill you up, cum inside over and over and over until your cunt would overflow. Not only just to claim you in a weird animalistic sense, but to also make his family complete. He had cut his ties to his illegal activities by now, had settled down with you- and he knew, there was no other person he'd ever have a child with again than with you. "I want to cum inside." He said breathlessly, making you whine in return. "Hm, you'd like that?" He asked teasingly, his thrusts gaining more strength as if to underline his statement. "Stuff you full of my cum, make you leak it and mess up the sheets.." He continues, hand reaching between the two of you to find your clit. "just to make love to you over and over again. I wanna make you cry." He gritted out, suddenly moving you around face down. He pulled up your lower body, entering you again, gliding in easily with the amount of slick you were leaking. "And you'd take it wouldn't you?" He asks, making you nod and groan out as he grows more desperate, faster, harder- throwing you off the edge but never stopping. "You're gonna take it until I cum, don't you dare move away from me." He scolds, holding you tightly, making you gasp out in overstimulation as he continues on, chasing his own high.
He reaches it with a loud groan, burying himself deep inside as he holds you, peppering kisses onto your spine. "I love you, hm.." He whispers out. "So good, so pretty.. all mine.." He huffs, simply falling onto the mattress with you in his arms, cock still buried inside you.
There was a moment of silence, until he spoke again. "I really do mean it though." He said earning only a tired humm from you. He simply chuckled at that, holding you close as he decided to maybe bring that topic up when the timing was a bit better.
For once, he felt like a normal person. Right next to you, in your arms, as you turned around to pull him close, burying your face into his chest.
Right where he belonged.

Tumblr media
You could feel his stare piercing you even from across the court. White hot, curious with a streak of jealousy.
Of course.
That’s to be expected when you show up to your old boyfriend’s match with your new boyfriend. You tried to ignore his stare as you helped Ragnar – your boyfriend – stretch before the game.
“Babe? Can you pull the other now?” He asks you, smiling sweetly, and it makes you sick that you have to give it all your might to concentrate on him, not the brunette standing just on the other side of the court.
“Of course,” You mentally scold yourself for even letting him cross your mind, pushing down the feeling of your hammering heart and complying with Ragnar. “That hard enough baby?”
“I bet I could give it to you harder,” He smiled suddenly, and you feel yourself become flustered as you realize what he meant.
“Shut up!” You scold him lightly, giggling a little while shaking your head. “You’re such a perv, you know that?”
“Oh come on,” Ragnar whines, his bottom lip jutting out a little in a pout. “You promised that if I won this game then we’d...you know...”
“That was only if you won,” You reminded him, emphasizing only. “Which won’t happen if the star player gets put out for pulling a muscle. So focus.”
“Right, right,” Ragnar finally complied and you ignored the whispers as people slowly began to talk.
“Hey...isn’t that Oikawa’s ex girlfriend?” Someone whispered, causing you to tense up.
“Yeah, I wonder what she’s doing here.”
“Do you think she came to see him?”
“Nah, it looks like she moved on. With a player from the opposing team, no less!”
“Come on,” You gently tugged on Ragnar’s arm as your heart hammered in your chest. “Let’s go set you up, yeah?”
“Yeah,” Ragnar agreed and you tightly gripped his hand as he lead you deeper into his team’s territory. A few people that would be playing greeted you, but you hardly acknowledged them as you sat down on the bench and then heard him talking.
“Big crowd isn’t it?” Oikawa said nonchalantly, but you could hear something lingering in his voice.
“Yeah. Best not get too caught up in it,” You heard someone else respond. Iwaizumi, of course. He had been one of your closest friends when you and Oikawa were still dating, but after you broke up the two of you slowly drifted away.
You felt bad for cutting him off but you knew that he was Oikawa’s friend first and it’d be too awkward trying to share him.
You needed a clean break from Oikawa, so why, why were you straining so hard to hear him talk?
“Let’s go say hello to some of our opponents,” You then heard Oikawa suggest, causing you to freeze. Ragnar had long since walked away, so you were the only one that noticed the seemingly thunderous footsteps of the last two people you wanted to see.
You knew he was coming, you could feel his stare and desperately tried to move. You willed your body to pick itself up, but somehow you remained seated as suddenly his presence washed over you.
“Well, well,” You flinched at his voice, too close for comfort but still as beautiful and smooth as ever. You could tell he was smirking. “You guys seem pretty good from where we’re standing, I can tell this is gonna be a tough game.”
He was lying. You knew Oikawa and you knew that he’d wipe the floor with Ragnar’s team. This was Seijoh after all- they were the favorites for nationals.
“Uh, thanks?” Seeing as your boyfriend was team captain, he was the one that replied. You kept your eyes glued to him, and him only as you watched the interaction.
“No problem,” Oikawa smirked. “You know I’d even go so far to say I’m nervous,” He said, and you wanted to scream from how he was taunting your boyfriend. But you feared it’d be worse if you got involved.
“Well, we’re not called Tigers for no reason,” Ragnar chuckled. His gaze flashed to you and immediately you could see Oikawa scowling.
“Our playing styles seem to be a lot different,” Oikawa started, “So I wish you luck. But I think you’ll find that you and me- we’re not so different after all.”
For the first time since you had broken up with him, you and Oikawa made eye contact. He winked at you as your (E/C) eyes went wide, your mouth going dry. “Isn’t that right, Y/N?”
The way he purred your name should have been illegal. And you kicked yourself as your heart began to flutter, butterflies forming in your stomach.
Dammit! You tore your eyes away and looked anywhere but him.
God, you fucking hated him.
How did he manage to have this effect on you, months after you had seen each other? How he did still make you nervous? How did he still make your thighs clench together by saying your name just right, just like he used to do while he had you underneath him and whimpering from his touch?
You sucked in a breath and shook away the tears that threatened to surface. You felt so disgusting, sitting there with your body gravitating towards him and that bastard knew it.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Ragnar frowned, suddenly becoming defensive as he noticed Oikawa looking straight at you. The brunette chuckled.
“Oh nothing,” He sighed like he hadn’t just called out his girlfriend directly. “Well, we better get going. The game should be starting soon. See you around.”
You averted your gaze as you fixated on Oikawa’s and Iwaizumi’s shoes. Their presence was so off-putting that you flinched again when Oikawa called out your name.
“Oh, and Y/N/N,” You hated the power he still had over you. Because as soon as he addressed you by that name, you looked up.
He smirked. “I’ll be seeing you soon,” He promised, something that he had been retreating over the many texts and DM’s he had sent you.
You gulped.
“Come on, leave her alone,” Iwaizumi gently tugged on Oikawa’s sleeve, dragging him away sending you a look of apology. You nodded in acceptance and then let out a breath when they were finally gone.
“Do you know him?” Ragnar immediately asked, watching Oikawa’s back with hard eyes.
You sighed. “Nope. I’ve never...I’ve never seen him in my life. I was just friends with the guy he was with.”
“Humph,” Ragnar hummed as soon as your phone pinged. Picking it up, you became frozen in shock at the message.
You looked beautiful today, my love. Too bad you were on his arm and not mine.
“Is everything alright?” Ragnar asked carefully, looking at your dejected face. “He didn’t spook you out or anything, did he?”
“N-No, It’s fine,” You stutter, quickly hiding your phone. “I’m fine. Don’t let it get to you- he’s probably just using me to get to you.”
If only he knew. It was much, much more than that.
Oikawa waited for Ragnar to leave and then he smirked when your gaze automatically flickered to his, like he knew it would. Winking, you almost lost it when his lips began to move and he mouthed ‘I love you,’ just when the whistle blew.
“YES!”
You grinned in happiness as your boyfriend and his teammates jumped around in victory, having beat Seijou by just a point.
You had to admit, you were on edge the entire game. Regretfully you had spent a good amount of time looking back and forth between your boyfriend and your ex, watching them battle it out.
Ragnar had been amazing out there but Oikawa...Oikawa had been absolutely phenomenal.
It was obvious he had improved in the time you were apart. His spike were still deadly and they were powerful enough to score 15 points. Halfway through the game, you had been sure Seijou would win the game.
But when it really mattered, little mistakes is what got them. So that’s why you were currently celebrating with your team, but didn’t really feel like a win.
Not for you.
“Y/N!” Ragnar snapped you out of your thoughts by pulling you into a sudden kiss, causing you to squeak. “We did it baby- I told you!”
“Yeah!” You were grateful he was too excited to hear your halfhearted reply, and too distracted to see your tight smile. “Congrats, baby. I knew you could do it.”
No you didn’t. Guilt pooled in your stomach as you remembered ranking Oikawa over your own boyfriend. You stomach twisted- how could you do that? How could you sit there that entire game waiting for Ragnar to fail if only you got to see Oikawa win?
You felt sick with yourself.
“Come on,” Ragnar gently tugged on your arm and smiled shyly. “Let’s all get back to the bus, yeah? I believe you have a promise to fufill,” He whispered that last part lowly, causing you to shiver and widen your eyes.
“Right,” You smiled tightly, pretending like your heart wasn’t about to pound out of your chest. “Let me just...let me check to see if we got everything. I’ll do a final sweep and meet you there.”
“Okay,” Ragnar grinned and leaned down to press a kiss on your cheek. Then, with all thirteen of his teammates he exited the building leaving you standing there, hollow.
“What are you doing?” You asked yourself, watching them walk away. “Why am I staying?”
It felt wrong to leave just now. It felt like you had something else to do. Someone else to see.
“Dammit,” You cursed as your feet began to go in the opposite direction, jogging lightly and prayed that they were still there.
It was just your luck that Seijou was on the opposite side of the building, and all of the buses were still there which meant there was a possibility he wouldn’t even be inside.
“Shit!”
You couldn’t believe you were being this stupid. Why were you running towards him, hoping to catch him before he left? Why did you care? Why had you never stopped caring?
“Y/N?” Iwaizumi’s surprised voice was difficult to hear over your heavy breathing, but you managed, raising your head to meet his eyes.
“Iwa-Chan,” You used his old nickname, setting yourself up straight. “I-”
“Why are you here?” He hadn’t meant it to sound rude, he was surprised that’s all. Hell, you were surprised yourself.
“I...” Why were you here?
Your eyes scanned the surroundings behind Iwaizumi. Fourteen players, but there were sixteen on the team. He followed your gaze, and his eyes softened when he noticed you looking.
“In the locker room,” He suddenly said, snapping your attention back to him.
You frowned. “W-What?”
“He’s in the locker room,” Iwaizumi repeated, knowing that’s who you were looking for. You felt your chest tighten.
“I-I wasn’t...”
“Bus leaves in 30 minutes. Don’t make him late, please,” Iwaizumi told you like it was nothing. You suddenly felt embarrassed. He had read you like an open book.
“T-Thank you,” You nodded in appreciation before turning in that direction. “Thank you, Iwaizumi. I-It was good to see you.”
He studied you for moment. It looked like he was about to say something, but then he just shook his head.
“You too, Y/N-Chan. Thank you for this,” Iwaizumi said. “He...he needs you right now.”
You felt like all the air disappeared from your lungs. Your heart pounded uncomfortably, while a tiny voice in your head told you ‘No. Don’t do this.’
“Okay,” You ignored the voice and got moving. Your feet walking in a direction you shouldn’t have been going. Your heart leading the way while your brain screamed profanities.
When you got to the locker room, you could already hear him pacing around. He was cursing, mumbling to himself about things you couldn’t hear until you got closer.
“O-Oikawa?” Your voice was hesitant, but you forced yourself to say something.
Immediately, his brown eyes snapped to you. Surprise- just like Iwaizumi- filled them, but no sooner than it appeared, it was gone.
“Y-Y/N-Chan?” He stuttered your name like he had never uttered it before. It made you even more nervous, but nevertheless your body pulled you in closer. “W-What are you doing here?”
“I-I came to see you,” You forced out, tearing your eyes away. It was too much. His gaze was too intense.
Oikawa scoffed. “After that? Shouldn’t you be with your boyfriend, celebrating?”
You didn’t like the way he said ‘your boyfriend.’ It felt wrong, coming from his lips. Like words that shouldn’t exist. You gulped.
“He’s on the bus,” You explained, still keeping your head down. “He...They’re waiting for me.”
“And what-” You could see his shoes getting closer, “Don’t tell me you came back for me,” He said in disbelief.
You sighed. “I wanted to see if you were okay,” You finally got the courage to look up and meet his eyes, and when you did you nearly melted.
Nothing had changed. He could still captivate you with one look- that damn look he was giving you now.
“Oh,” He sounded genuinely confused.
“Y-Yeah,” You stuttered slightly. “It’s just...I know how much you hate losing,” You mumbled quietly, embarrassed. “Especially if it’s to...”
“If it’s to him?” Oikawa finished, and you nodded, too embarrassed to say anything. “Well, you wouldn’t be wrong.”
You guys were so close now that you could begin to feel his body heat. Oikawa was always so warm, it was one of the things you love about him.
Wait a minute. Love?
“Hey,” He was bold and reached over to take your hand, causing electricity to flow through both of you. “Look at me.”
Even though it was softly spoken, you knew that it was a command. And, unable to resist him, you did.
You looked deep into his eyes and you could see every ounce of love he had for you. You could see the lust, the longing, but also the pain that still lingered months after you had parted ways.
“Tell me something,” Oikawa spoke again, letting out a breath. “Do you still love me?”
The question caught you off guard. You weren’t expecting him to jump right in, to dive head first after only just seeing you again.
But for Tooru- you knew he needed to know. You knew that your words would determine would what happen next, if the tension between you two would boil over or if it would simmer to a stop.
“I never stopped,” You confessed honestly, clenching your fists. “Everyday- everyday I’m not with you is like hell for me. I keep thinking back to it, that day you left. And I-”
Tears began to well in your eyes at the memory. All the screaming, the crying and the petty insults you had thrown at one another all seemed so...irrelevant now. Oikawa was staring at you with pure love, love that had never stopped for you. And now...now you began to wonder why either of you ever walked away.
“I’m sorry,” His fingers brushed the side of your face and you relished in his touch, immediately melting into him. “I’m sorry for everything- for what I said to you. For walking away...” Oikawa trailed off for a moment and then he resumed, his eyes squeezing shut. “...For letting someone else take you before I had the chance...before I could...”
“Hey,” Now it was his turn to melt into your touch. Oikawa leaned into you as you cupped his cheek, sighing almost painfully. He had waited too long to feel your touch again. “It’s okay. We both said a lot of things that day. I’m sorry too.”
“I still love you, you know,” Oikawa blurted out. He sounded embarrassed, but little did he know how much they effected you.
It was wrong, you knew that. To be holding your ex, comforting him while your boyfriend was waiting on you. It was wrong but...god it felt so right.
“I know,” You murmured quietly, pressing yourself into him. You could feel the hard outline of his muscles, a feeling that was familiar to you. Your body immediately flushed, subconsciously yearning for more.
“I broke your heart into two,” He said regretfully, his face contorting into pain.
“I know,” But still, you pressed your forehead to his. “But when it healed...it was still beating for you,” You confessed, Oikawa’s arm gently wrapping around your waist to pull you close.
“Y/N?”
“Hmm?”
“I love you,” He said breathlessly, and then before you could react his lips were on yours.
It was like...taking a deep breath after being underwater for so long. So refreshing, so vital to keep living that you had no choice but to surrender to it.
You were quick to lean into him, kissing back with as much passion and feriocity as you could. In that short amount of time, somehow your hands found his hair and Oikawa’s fingers began to find their way up your shirt.
“Can I...” He pulled away to tug on your shirt, looking at with you with absolute need.
“Yes,” You couldn’t get the word out fast enough, excitement running through your veins as Oikawa all but ripped it off. “God, yes.”
“So beautiful,” He muttered slightly, smiling when he saw you were wearing his favorite bra. “It’s like you were expecting this,” He said, but you only responded by leaning to kiss him again.
You couldn’t get enough, it had been so long, too long since his mouth had been on yours. Your body had been craving him for such a long time and now that you had him, you were eager to be as close as you could.
“Your turn,” You told him, pulling away to now tug on his shirt. “Off.”
“Yes ma’am,” Oikawa smirked at your request and immediately took it off, throwing it in some random corner. “Is this good?”
“Perfect,” You murmured lovingly, running your hands over his beautiful body.
Oikawa shivered underneath your touch, anticipation racing through his as you traced his abs.
“It’s been too long,” He said, you nodding in agreement. “It’s not enough, I need to-”
“I know,” You already knew what he wanted and you were eager to comply, stepping away to wiggle out of your jeans. Then, you snapped the bralette off which left you standing in only your cute pale panties.
“Mine,” Your back was against the lockers before you could even blink, a possessive glint in Oikawa’s eyes as he eyed your almost naked body.
“It’s always been yours,” You reminded him, before pulling him down in another kiss. This was one was messier, your desire for one another evident as your tongues danced with each other. Oikawa was pressing so hard against you that you could feel his hard on through his shorts, smirking when he moaned as you grinded against him.
“I need those off,” You ordered, your core beginning to trob at the anticipation. Oikawa was the same, wanting nothing more than to finally be inside of you again. He pulled down his shorts like it was nothing, and then he yanked at your panties, feeling them to be soaked.
“Someone’s excited,” He chuckled, and you moaned as he stoked over your clothed pussy.
“Off,” You whimpered, not being able to stand it anymore. It was unbearable- he was right there, so why wasn’t he buried inside of you?
“Yes ma’am,” Once again, he gave you what you wanted and then shed his boxers, his erection springing free. Your mouth watered at the sight of his pretty cock, standing all hard because of you.
“I’ve missed this,” You admitted as Oikawa pulled your panties down. “I need-”
“I got you,” He promised, finally sliding off the material and then pressing you against the lockers once more. He bent down to hook his arms underneath your thighs, automatically bringing your pussy to hover right over his tip.
He was beyond eager, something you’d never seen in Oikawa before. Usually, he could tease you for hours but this time was different.
“Do you want me to...you want me to prep you first?” He offered like a true gentleman, but you could tell it was killing him to not be inside of you already.
“N-No,” You declined as his cock rubbed over your wet folds. “Not today- next time-”
“Next time,” Oikawa promised, before capturing you into a kiss and slowly sinking himself in.
The stretch was beautiful, you couldn’t help but whimper as your pussy finally became full after months. And from Oikawa no less, it felt like a perfect fit as he gripped you tightly and buried himself to the hilt.
“Fuck,” His eyes nearly rolled to the back of his head at the sensation, your pussy sucking him in. There was something so gratifying, so beautiful about being inside of you again and being able to feel all of you.
It didn’t matter if you were still taking birth control or not. Oikawa was determined to cum inside of you, he was determined to fill you to the brink.
“Move,” You whimpered in his arms, the feeling of his cock pushing past your tight ring of muscles painful, but also reliving. This is what you wanted, you wanted this feeling of him. And you wanted him faster.
“O-Okay,” Oikawa gave you what you wanted and bucked his hips into you, moaning at how tight you felt. You always squeezed him just right, but it seemed like today your walls were determined to milk him dry. Not that he minded of course, but he had to squeeze his eyes shut and focus so that he wouldn’t fill you up right then and there.
“T-Tooru...” Your broken moans only encouraged him to go faster, lockers behind you shaking as he pounded you good. Thank god he was strong- he had no trouble holding you up as he drilled into you over and over again.
“God you’re so fucking tight,” Oikawa moaned and nuzzled himself into your neck, sucking on your sweet spot.
You knew he was going to mark you up, stake his claim to any man that came near you. That included Ragnar but you no longer cared, the feeling of him abusing your cervix washing out anything else.
“Oh god,” You gasped, snapping your eyes open as Oikawa angled his hips to hit just the right spot. That spot that made you go absolutely wild, crying out his name like a prayer as you held on for dear life.
“Oikawa!”
“That’s right baby,” He pulled away from your neck and grunted, looking straight into your eyes as he abused it over and over again. “Let them know who you’ve always belonged to- let them know that I’m the first and only man that’s ever touched this little pussy!”
“I-” You threw your head back as stars began to cloud your vision, “Y-You’re the only one, baby. It’s always you. It’ll always be you,” You cried out, a tear slipping down your face from sheer pleasure.
“I know,” Oikawa kissed your cheeks and then you could feel his thrusts getting sloppy- he was close.
As both of your orgasms came close he made sure to take one hand from under your thighs and then used his fingers to rub your clit. Once again, you marveled this mans strength because he managed to hold you up with one hand while simultaneously pleasuring you at the same time.
“B-Baby...” You could feel the knot in your stomach about to unravel, and you held onto Oikawa as euphoria washed over you. “I-I’m gonna-”
“Let it go, sweetheart,” Oikawa moaned as his own movement stiffened, and then you feel his warm cum paint your walls.
With one last cry, you clenched around him and let it go, yelling out his name so loud there was no way somebody couldn’t hear you, and Oikawa secretly wished it was Ragnar.
A feeling of smugness mixed in with the pleasure as he emptyed himself inside of you, knowing that nobody else had ever had you like this before.
You were full of him, of his cum, and his cock was the only that’s ever had the pleasure to breed you.
He filled your womb like it was nothing and once you both came down, you were a shaking and crying mess against him.
“I love you, Oikawa Tooru,” You mumbled against his lips as he kissed you messily.
“I love you too, Y/N L/N,” He said honestly, giving one last trust before pulling out of you.
Oikawa let go of your legs but he was there to quickly hold your trembling body, your legs unstable. You looked up at him with eyes filled with pure love and admiration and god, Oikawa thinks you’ve never looked prettier with tear stains on your cheeks and with your pussy leaking with his cum.
“Does this mean-” Ever the bold one, he dared to ask, “Does this mean you’re coming home with me?”
“Y-Yes,” You stuttered out slightly, your chest tightening at the prospect of leaving Ragnar but not because you loved him, but because you felt guilty. “What am I gonna...what am I gonna say?” You wondered, but Oikawa already had that planned.
“Leave that to me,” He promised, bending down to pick up your phone. You watched him hesitantly as he unlocked it, smirking when he realized you didn’t even have his picture on your home screen.
“What are you doing?” You asked slightly panicked as he opened up Snapchat.
“This,” You gasped as Oikawa was suddenly inside of you again, your pussy struggling to take him after what just happened. You didn’t even have to think as you held onto his biceps tightly, Oikawa beginning to thrust again.
“Think twice before you take something that’s mine,” You heard him growl, and then he was sliding out, sending the video straight to Ragnar.
“Did you just-”
“He needed to know his place,” Oikawa said casually, scooping you into his arms again. “He may have beat me today, but he lost the most incredible girl he could have ever had.”
“Did you seriously just do that?” You were still floored, struggling to wrap your brain around it. I mean you knew Oikawa was petty but this-?
“Did you expect anything else, my dove?” He chuckled.
You sighed. “Honestly...no. No I didn’t,” You found yourself grinning at him just as your phone pinged, blowing up with texts and snaps from Ragnar.
“Well, I guess that’s our cue,” Oikawa laughed, opening a snap and sending back a selfie. “Come on- you can delete all of his stuff on the bus.”
“You’re...you’re unbelievable,” You told him with wide-eyes, your phone pinging again.
“I know,” Oikawa smiles, “But I have you back either way.”

Seasons of PD: Season 5: PTSD (A Halstead brothers + Halstead! sister imagine)
As always, I don't own any quotes from 5x01 of Chicago PD!
Your age: 16
Jay's age: 30
Will's age: 32
"I just talked to Ballistics. The bullet that hit the little girl was a nine-millimeter."
"I thought the bangers were firing 45s."
"They were."
"You're saying I shot that little girl?"
That. That was the conversation that was replaying in Jay's head as he sat on the couch of his apartment that afternoon. How could he call himself a cop, a good cop, if it was him who shot that girl? He should've known that there an illegal daycare center there, even though no one could've known, he still should've figured it out somehow. But, he was taking heavy fire and he did what he needed to do. But, that didn't make him feel any better. A little girl was in critical condition and fighting for her life at Chicago Med because of him. It was all his fault.
***
Your mind wandered back to the day earlier in the year when it was your sixteenth birthday...and you had gotten the iPhone that was currently blowing up with Twitter notifications all about Jay.
You had gone for breakfast with your dad because he had completed the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and was doing a lot better. He also had visitation rights after he completed the 12 Steps, so he had the right to see you. Since you were 16, you could refuse, but you didn't want your dad to feel bad. And, from what you had heard from Will who had been going to see how he was doing to see if it was safe for you to see him, he was doing really well.
During breakfast, he had given you a gift. You opened it and immediately recognized the bracelet.
"Is this Mom's?" you asked. "I thought you said you couldn't find it when I asked for it when I was like ten."
"I've kept it all these years, I was just waiting for the right time to make sure you'd be able to take care of it and not lose it."
You remembered playing with the charm bracelet when you were little when it dangled off your mom's wrist. There were a bunch of different charms from places she had gone, such as Mount Rushmore, Washington DC, a record charm that she had bought in Hollywood, and for other special occasions, such as a steering wheel charm she got from her parents when she got her driver's license, a graduation cap she got for graduation which she also got from her parents, a wedding dress charm which symbolized the day she married your dad, among other charms.
"Thank you," you replied as you held back tears.
He'd changed, he'd recovered, but there's still no way you'd go back to live with him.
***
"How was breakfast with Dad?" Jay asked as you walked into the apartment after you had breakfast.
"Good. He's doing really good, Jay." You walked up to him and opened the small gift box you were holding. "He gave me this." You held the box out to him and he smiled.
"Mom's charm bracelet?" You nodded. "Want me to put it on you?"
"Please."
Jay's breath hitched as he took the bracelet out of the box. It was like he was holding a little piece of his mom, and this piece of your mom would forever be with you the moment he fastened the clasp.
"It's perfect," you said as you fiddled with a few charms.
You both sat in silence for a few moments, just thinking about the fact that this was your mom's and it was now yours.
"Ready to go get your license?" Jay asked, breaking the silence.
"Is that even a question? Yes!"
You had taken your driver's test a week ago after completing the long process of going through two segments of driver's training classes, taking a written test, securing your learner's permit, and accumulating 50 or more hours of driving practice with either Jay or Will.
Jay chuckled at your excitement. "You good with how you look? You'll have the same license photo until you're 21, you know?"
"Let me go put on some lipstick!"
"Not that super dark reddish-purple one!"
"Yes, that super dark reddish-purple one! It's my favorite and it looks good on me!" you yelled as you ran to your room.
Once you had applied your lipstick, you and Jay made your way to the Secretary of State with all the necessary documents for you to get your license.
***
"Why's my license vertical and not horizontal like yours?" you asked after you exited the building with your brand new license.
"You get a horizontal one when you're 21. Just makes it easier for us cops to identify if you're underage if we ask for your license. And for bartenders to know you're underage if you try to buy alcohol."
"Oh, okay."
"You wanna drive?" Jay asked you.
"Sure. It's no different than me having my permit, though because you'll be in the car," you pointed out.
"So, you don't want to drive."
"No, I do!"
"That's what I thought."
He handed you the keys and you unlocked his truck. You both got in and you started adjusting the seat and the rearview mirror.
"Don't forget to--"
"Adjust the side mirrors. I know, Jay, I know. We've been through this a ton. Trust me."
"You're essentially driving a missile down the road, excuse me if I get nervous."
You rolled your eyes and started to drive, but when you were supposed to turn right, he told you to go left.
"Where are we going?" you asked.
"The district," he answered.
"Why?"
"You'll see. Just drive. I'll give you directions because we both know you're bad with those."
"Shut up!"
"What? We both know it's true!"
When you got there, Jay told you to park in front of what he called the "roll-up". To say you were confused would be an understatement; you didn't even know what this was!
"It's where we load our weapons and drive out sometimes. It's the basement," Jay explained.
"Where the cage is?"
"How do you know about that?"
"Adam told me about it. And then when you and  Erin were on  a lunch run for everyone, he showed it to me."
"I'm gonna have to talk to him about that."
Once you finished parking, you turned off the car and handed the keys back to Jay. Then, Jay did this weird, complicated knock on the garage door of the roll-up.
"Surprise!"
You were met with Will standing there. Behind him, was a car, with a bow on top.
"Is this mine?" you asked.
"Yup," Will confirmed. "Dude," he said to Jay, "You're lucky Goodwin let me out early."
"2010 Buick," Jay said as you walked over to examine the car more. "Seized it from a mob boss two weeks ago. It was going to be impounded, but Kev's got a really good car guy, so I didn't have to pay a lot for it."
"Wait," you started, "So this is just from you, Jay?"
"My gift is in your driver's seat," Will said and then he tossed you the keys. Somehow you caught them...you weren't the best when it came to hand-eye coordination.
You unlocked it using the fob and opened the driver's side door. There, on the driver's seat, was a box. And, not just any box: an Apple box.
"Is this...?"
"Open it." Will smiled.
So you did and you squealed so loud that Jay covered his ears. "Damn, high-pitched screams...sometimes worse than the sound of gunshots."
"Sorry! I'm just so excited! I can't believe I got a car and iPhone! You guys are the best! I love you guys so much!"
"We figured it'd save me a ton of time in the morning not to have to drive you to school and, if I get called into a case early or stay at work late, then I wouldn't have to find someone to drop you off or pick you up. And, figured I could always track your phone if necessary," Jay answered.
"I knew there was a catch," you answered.
"Always is," Will joked.
"Are there traps still in the car?" you asked, causing Jay's eyes to go wide.
"How do you know about those?"
"I watch crime shows."
"No," he answered. "Made sure that was one of the very first things Kev's car guy did: remove the traps."
"Aw, man! I was gonna have fun with those!"
"And put what in them?" Will asked. "Candy? Those fancy pens you like?"
"One, there's two different kinds I like: Papermate pens and calligraphy pens. And two, a little bit of this, a little bit of that."
"Care to specific on what those might be?" Jay asked.
"Not really."
"May I remind you that I am a cop and can toss your bedroom like--" He snapped his fingers. "--that."
"Don't you need a warrant for that?"
"It's my house, so I can do what I want. And, I hope I don't need to bring charges against you for whatever you're hiding."
You burst out laughing. "You guys, I'm kidding. I just wanted to see Jay's reaction when I mentioned traps! I wouldn't do anything...especially with Jay as my brother. I'm not that stupid."
"Oh thank God," Jay sighed.
"Can we go? A little birdie let it slip that there's a surprise party for me at the apartment."
Will glared at Jay. "What?" Jay asked as he put his hands up in a sign of surrender. "I promise you I did not say a single word about it."
"Mhm." Will rolled his eyes.
"Y/N, would this little birdie be Ruzek?" Jay asked.
"I am never telling him anything remotely secretive again."
But now, you kinda wished you didn't have that phone. Because, all over Twitter, there were people who didn't even know your brother who was saying that he was a racist cop and a child killer.
***
You walked inside to see a very distraught Jay. he was sitting on the couch with his head in his hands. And, even though you could only see one side of his face from where you were standing, you could see the dried tear tracks on his cheeks.
"So, it's true?" you asked. Jay jumped and looked at you. "Sorry. Didn't mean to scare you."
"H-How do you know what happened?"
You sat down next to him. "Twitter. My mentions were blowing up."
"Y/N, you gotta believe me. I wouldn't intentionally shoot a little girl--"
"Jay, I believe you."
"At least she's at Med. Will said she's got a good chance of making it."
"Oh, you didn't hear." He furrowed his eyebrows. "She passed away. I got a notification about it like an hour ago. I'm so sorry, Jay."
"Fuck," was all he said as he buried his head in his hands and began sobbing.
You wanted to comfort him, you really did, but you had no idea what to say. You knew Jay was a good cop and, whatever happened, you knew that he wouldn't purposely kill an innocent little girl. So, you just put a hand on his shoulder as he continued to sob, reminding him that you were still there.
"I'm gonna go talk to Will," he said as he stood up a few minutes later.
He walked over to the kitchen sink and splashed his face with water and dried it with some paper towels while you walked over to him.
"I'll drive you," you told him. "You're not in any shape to be driving right now. I know you'd tell me the same thing."
"No, Y/N, I can drive myself."
"This isn't up for discussion, Jay."
"Yes, it is. My picture's all over the internet. If someone decides to come after me, I don't want you near me out in public. I need you to be safe. Just stay here. Please." His voice cracked on the last word.
"Fine."
"Thank you."
"But please try your best to get home in one piece."
Jay nodded and grabbed his jacket. "I'll be back soon."
But, what he was thinking was totally different. After what I did, I don't deserve to come home in one piece.
***
Jay stormed into the ED just as Will was leaving a treatment room and Will caught sight of Jay and walked towards him.
"You said she was gonna make it!" Jay practically yelled.
"Hey," Will said, quieter, trying to use his trying-to-calm-down-a-patient-voice to hopefully make Jay calm down.
"You said she was gonna..." Jay took a deep breath, trying to keep the tears at bay.
"Hey, I said she had a chance, okay? She was in bad shape. Lost too much blood."
"I know."
"There's only so much we can do."
"I know. I'm sorry. I just...the bullet came from my gun. Even though I was aiming at an offender, it went through his abdomen and through a fucking door and into her, Will. Even though it was an accident, I still shot her. I killed an eight-year-old little girl. I killed her."
***
"50-21 George!" Jay yelled into his radio. "I'm taking heavy fire! I got two civilians down in the north alley behind the building."
"This is Sergeant Hank Voight. Advise responding units to shut down a two-block radius."
"Help! Help!"
Jay turned his attention to the building and when he saw it was clear, he pushed open the wooden door and entered.
He nearly choked when he saw what happened.
It was you. You were eight years old, clutching Beary in one hand while Hailey held you and tried to stop the bleeding.
"Y/N!" He had no idea why you were even here, maybe your parents couldn't afford a good, legal daycare center because of your mom's medical bills, but whatever it was, you were here, and you had somehow been shot. He kneeled down next to you and all but threw his sniper on the ground.
"Alright, I'm gonna call an ambulance," Hailey said.
"We don't have time." Somehow, he was aware of where his keys were in his tactical gear. "Go get my car. Fast."
He handed over the keys. "Ready?" Hailey asked as Jay positioned his hands above hers to try and stop the bleeding the minute she removed her hands.
Jay nodded and quickly replaced Hailey's hands with his as she sprinted off to get his truck.
But, then the scene changed.
It became hotter. Jay could feel the dry heat in his mouth and in his throat. He felt the sweat trickle down his face and back. He felt beads of sand on his hands and arms. He looked down to see you resting your head against his leg. And, he wasn't in his normal clothes that he'd wear to work. No, he was in his Rangers uniform.
He had his hands over the same spot on your chest as he had in the daycare center. And, you still had Beary in your hand, albeit a very loose grip on him.
You coughed, causing some blood to come out of your mouth.
"No, Y/N, not like this. Not like this." He removed one hand from the wound and applied all the pressure he could with one hand while he reached for his radio. "This is Halstead to Base." Crackles. "This is Halstead to Base." More crackles. "Please. This is Halstead to Base. I need a med truck now! My sister's been shot." No response. "Please. She's only-- She's only eight years old." His voice cracked. "Please."
You coughed once more and Jay knew trying to reach Base was useless at this point. Jay took his canteen and dabbed a little bit of water on your face and smeared it around, trying to clean the blood off your face. But, as fast as he could clean it, more would come up and out of your mouth.
You let out a strangled breath. Jay knew that sound. That was the sound of someone's last gasp of air that they'd ever take.
"Y/N, please. Please, Short Stack. Stay with me. Help will come. Please, just hang on a little longer."
Then, he saw the all too familiar look of empty eyes in front of him. He let out a strangled sob as he placed his fingers on your eyelids and gently pulled them closed.
Jay shot up in bed with a start. He reached for his chest, feeling for his radio to try and call for help again. It was only when his fingers brushed his bare chest that he realized that he wasn't in the desert of Afghanistan, but in the safety of his own bed, in his own apartment, here stateside, here in Chicago.
He went into the bathroom after his breathing calmed down and jumped into a freezing cold shower, hoping to get the image of an eight-year-old you being shot and killed by his gun out of his head.
But it wouldn't leave.
Jay dried off and then quietly made his way out of his room and over to yours.
He crouched down by your bed and watched as your chest rose and fell, signaling that you were in a deep sleep. You were sleeping on your side and had one leg thrown over the other and a few toes sticking out from under the covers. Beary was next to you. You weren't clutching him like in his nightmare, hell you weren't even holding him, but he was still in your bed. Jay was pretty sure that if that bear wasn't in your bed at night, you wouldn't be able to sleep, despite you being sixteen.
Jay longed to put two fingers to your neck just to check your pulse and make sure he wasn't hallucinating the rising and falling of your chest. But, he knew that was paranoid. He could trust his instincts now. After all, he was awake. There was no stifling heat, no hot sweat (at least, after his shower there wasn't), and no sand. All that was below him was the fluffy rug on your bedroom floor.
He slowly left your room and went back to his. But, instead of getting into bed, he tugged his comforter off his bed and grabbed his pillow. Then, he dragged those two things back into your room and settled down on your rug.
He knew it was probably paranoia, but after that dream, he wanted to make sure you were safe. He wanted to be close to you. Because, God, that dream felt so real.
She's alive, he kept reminding himself as he tried to fall asleep. And, that was the last thing on his mind when he finally fell asleep once more: that you were still alive.
***
Your alarm blared through your quiet room and you rolled over with a groan and turned it off.
"Christ, that was loud. How deep of a sleeper are you?" Jay asked as he rolled over.
You looked at him with sleep still in your eyes. "What are you doing in here?"
"Was a rough night." He yawned. "Just wanted to make sure you were okay."
"Okay...?"
"I say ten more minutes."
"Jay, I'll be late."
"I'll drive you, lights and sirens and all."
"Night."
***
"You okay?" you asked around 11:00 pm two weeks later when Jay finally got home from working a case.
"Yeah, just tired," he answered as he went to put his badge and gun away in his room.
"Are you sure it's just that?" you asked when he came out from his room in pajamas.
"I'm sure. Why are you asking?"
"You had that street fair bombing case and two weeks ago, a bullet from your gun--"
"Y/N, I'm fine. I promise. don't you have to get to bed?"
"Tomorrow's Saturday. I don't have school tomorrow."
"So it is. I'm gonna turn in. See you in the morning."
"Aren't you gonna eat something?" you asked.
"I'm not really that hungry. Goodnight."
You knew something was off, but you weren't going to push it, so you just grabbed the remote and started looking for a movie to watch.
***
You coughed, causing some blood to come out of your mouth.
"No, Y/N, not like this. Not like this." He removed one hand from the wound and applied all the pressure he could with one hand while he reached for his radio. "This is Halstead to Base." Crackles. "This is Halstead to Base." More crackles. "Please. This is Halstead to Base. I need a med truck now! My sister's been shot." No response. "Please. She's only-- She's only eight years old." His voice cracked. "Please."

Then, he saw the all too familiar look of empty eyes in front of him. He let out a strangled sob as he placed his fingers on your eyelids and gently pulled them closed.
He saw a figure moving towards him and in his hand, a grenade.
"Would you like to join her?"
Jay jolted awake, breathing raggedly. He tried to catch his breath and swallow, but it was no use, the familiar feeling of bile was rising in his throat and he dry heaved all the way to the bathroom before he finally emptied what little was in his stomach into the toilet.
Meanwhile, you furrowed your eyebrows as you slowly opened your eyes. You thought you had heard gagging, but it was gone now, so you tried to close your eyes and go back to sleep. But, then you heard gagging and the sound of something hitting what sounded like water.
Wait, was Jay sick? He never got sick.
You got out of bed and walked over to his room and quietly opened his door. From the dim light of the bathroom, and the disheveled covers on his bed, you knew he was in the bathroom.
"Jay?" you asked as you crept towards his bathroom.
"Y/N, l-leave. Please, just leave me alone ri-right now." You could tell from the sound of his voice that he was panting as if he had just run a marathon.
"Are you okay?"
No. "I'm fine. Just a stomach bug or food poisoning. Go back to bed."
You poked your head into the bathroom. Jay was leaning against the bathtub without a shirt on, with sweat dripping down his face. His mouth was wide open as if he was trying to capture as much oxygen as was humanly possible.
"Maybe I should call Will. I don't think he's on shift."
"Y/N, I'm fine."
"You don't look fine. You don't look fine at all."
"Y/N, go back to bed. Now."
"But--"
"I said go to bed! So how about you listen for once and just fucking do that? Jesus!"
Your breath caught in your throat. You'd never heard him yell like that...not directed at you at least.
"O-Okay."
You trudged back to your room and laid down. But, sleep didn't come for a while as tears rolled down your cheeks.
Jay put his head in his hands. He had yelled at you. Not only that, but he had sworn at you and you were just trying to help. God, he felt like a terrible brother, a terrible guardian, an overall terrible human being.
He tugged at the roots of his hair, hoping the bit of tugging from that physical pain would calm the mental and emotional pain that had been stirring inside of him for weeks. For weeks he's been like this. Ever since he had been put on his medication, he hadn't even had a nightmare and now he's had them every single day, and he's scared to sleep. What kind of police detective and ex-army ranger is afraid to sleep when they're safe in their own house? He was one of them and, God, he hated himself for it.
Not getting more than three restless hours of sleep per night was starting to have an impact on him at work. They all knew that a sleepy cop was a dead cop, but Jay was still alive. But, there were downfalls, such as getting jittery from all the caffeine he was ingesting early in the morning and then crashing and almost falling asleep doing reports when he had to work late. Well, he didn't have to work late per se, he decided to work late to put off sleeping. He knew none of this was helpful and none of this would solve the problem, but he thought it would be fine. Everything would be fine and the nightmares would eventually go away. They always do. And then everything would be normal again in his brain.
God, he longed for that: the normalcy.
So, for the umpteenth night in a row, he grabbed a pillow and a blanket and made his way to your bedroom to sleep on the floor to make sure you were alive. He put his watch on vibrate and set the alarm for 6 am because he knew you wouldn't be awake that early...especially not on the weekend.
Only when the irrational part of his brain was sure that you weren't going to die, did he finally find solace in sleep.

Went to get coffee with Will and to work on homework. Be home eventually, you scribbled on a sticky note and stuck it on the back of the apartment door before you left. Jay had gotten called in to work a case earlier this morning, and you needed a change of scenery to work on some AP World History homework.
You grabbed your backpack, keys, and wallet, and made your way to the parking garage. Then, you left.
About ten minutes later, you arrived at the coffee shop. Not seeing Will, you set your stuff down and went to grab a coffee and a muffin. Don't get it wrong, Jay still didn't like the fact that you drank coffee, but you only drank it when you went out to get it. It wasn't like you drank it every morning or drank two or three cups a day like he did.
You started to read your textbook and take some notes on the vocab. You were so focused that you jumped when Will slid into the chair across from you and said your name.
"Sorry," he apologized. "Lots to do?"
"Not a ton," you replied. "Just gotta read a chapter and take some notes. Then I'm done with homework for the weekend."
"So, you said you think something's up with Jay?" Will asked.
You had texted him that morning to see if you could meet up because you were worried. You had seen how tired he looked and how he poured his coffee into a larger tumbler than normal, one that was almost double the size of his normal one. Bags under his eyes and more coffee than normal had given you the impression that Jay was no longer sleeping, and rightfully so.
"I don't think he's sleeping," you told him.
"And you know this how?" Will asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Because he looks like shit- sorry, he looks like crap, and he drinks a ton more coffee in the morning than he normally does."
"Maybe he just doesn't like the coffee at the district and is bringing more from home," he suggested.
"I don't think so."
"Is he still working out? Still going to the gym?"
"I think so. I'm usually still asleep when he goes, so I wouldn't know either way."
"Anything else?"
"Uh, actually, yeah." You closed your textbook. "I'm pretty sure he was sick last night."
"Sick? Like how sick?"
"He was puking. I wanted to call you but he told me no."
"How'd you find him?"
"Leaning against the bathtub, no shirt, dripping sweat, and mouth wide open."
"I see," Will said. "Anything else?"
"Yeah. Last night when I mentioned calling you, he said he was fine. But, when I pushed, he told me to leave and when I told him no, he yelled and cursed at me."
"He swore at you?" Will grit his teeth.
"Yeah," you whispered. "I don't know what's going on, Will. He hasn't been himself lately."
"Hey, I'll figure it out, okay? I'll make sure he's okay. I can even come over later tonight and check him out if you want me to."
"He'll fight you on that."
"I'm used to unruly patients. Is that what you--" His phone rang and he held up a finger to you to wait for a second while he answered. "Hey, Maggie. What's up?" He paused and then sighed. "I'll be right there." He hung up the phone and started gathering his stuff.
"What? Did something happen and you have to go to work?" you asked.
"Oh, something happened all right. I just got a call saying Jay was brought into Med."
You started to pack up your backpack and grabbed your keys. "I'll follow you there."
***
Jay didn't know what happened. One second he was driving, blinking heavily, the next Hailey was yelling at him and had reached over to grab the wheel, but it was too late. He was too close. When he opened his eyes, he tried to slam on the brake, but it didn't help. The next millisecond, he and Hailey crashed into an electrical pole in Pilsen.
He was awake after that.
"What the hell happened?" Voight asked after he had thrown his car in park and he and Al rushed over to Jay and Hailey.
"I think he fell asleep at the wheel," Hailey answered as she and Jay both stepped out of the truck.
"I did not," Jay protested.
"Oh yeah? Then how do you explain you just running into an electrical pole when there weren't even cars running us off the road?" Hailey yelled.
"I didn't fall asleep! I'm fully awake! Just drop it, Upton."
"Drop it? You do know if we would've hit that at full speed and it fell on us that we could've been electrocuted to death, right?"
"But that didn't happen--"
"Halstead, Upton, I'm bringing both of you to Med to get checked out. After that, you're going home to get some rest, Halstead. You look like hell," Voight told them.
"Sarge--"
"This isn't up for discussion. Get in the damn car." The two detectives walked to Voight's car, while Voight turned to Alvin. "Call Platt to get us some patrolmen to help. You good waiting here for them to pick you up while I bring them to Med?"
"Yeah, go. I'll handle this."
When Jay finally got to Med, to say he was not happy would be an understatement. He didn't need to be in the hospital and he sure as hell didn't need to be kicked off the case and told to go home to get some rest.
"Mags, what room is he in?"
Shit, they had called Will.
"Treatment Four."
Will walked into the room followed by you.
"You didn't have to come, neither of you did."
"Well, too bad," Will said. "Should've put her as your emergency contact instead of me. Oh wait, you can't, she's still too young. Guess you're stuck with me."
"All set," Hailey said as she walked in. "You ready to go?"
"Who's this?" you asked.
"My new partner," Jay told you. "Hailey, this is Y/N and Will, my siblings I told you about. Y/N and Will, my new partner, Hailey Upton."
"Nice to meet you. I've heard good things."
Will scoffed. "Would one of those good things be that Jay absolutely hates hospitals and I always have to make sure he doesn't leave against medical advice?"
"He didn't mention that, no."
"Well, either way, nice to meet Jay's new partner. Do you mind if I talk to him? Privately?"
"No problem."
Will turned to you. "You too, Y/N. Go grab some food or hang out with Hailey or something."
Will focused his attention on Jay when you and Hailey had left the treatment room. "Y/N told me she doesn't think you're sleeping and from what I heard from Maggie about why you were brought in here, don't even bother lying to me."
"I'm fine, Will, really. Nothing to worry about."
"Fine then. I'm gonna go order a blood test."
"Blood test? You're not even on shift! And, you can't even be my doctor if you were!" Jay protested.
"I read that April's your nurse, so I'm going to go find her and tell her to order a blood test then."
"Why?"
"To see if your plasma cortisol levels are elevated and if your cortisol testosterone levels have decreased," Will answer matter-of-factly.
"And you need those because...?"
"If the plasma cortisol level is elevated and the cortisol testosterone level is lowered, then those are both indicators that you haven't been sleeping. Be back, little brother."
Jay groaned and threw his head back. He didn't think he'd need to be stuck with a needle today. If only had put someone else down as his emergency contact, then this wouldn't be happening. Or, if his brother just wasn't a doctor or didn't work at this specific hospital then this wouldn't be happening, either.

Jay was walking you to school when you were eight years old. On your back, you had your backpack and you were holding Jay's hand and skipping to keep up with his long strides. Jay chuckled at how cute and innocent you were. He didn't want you to ever grow up.
"Jay Jay," you started, causing him to look down at you, "Did you get all the bad guys when you left?"
"Why do you ask?" He swallowed. He knew if you asked the right questions, he might not know how to answer them. And, his last tour was horrific, losing all the members of his unit except Mouse...the burning Humvee...the combatants still coming towards them...
"I don't know. I just wanted to know if there were any left?" you asked.
"There probably are."
"Do you have to go back there? Do you have to leave again to go fight the bad guys?"
Jay's breath hitched. He was honorably discharged after what had happened, so he wouldn't have to back. But, as he was thinking about how to answer you, the scene changed.
Screaming. All he could hear was screaming and the crackling of flames.
He looked around saw the scene from his last tour, his Humvee flipped over with all the members of his unit currently burning to crisp. He and Mouse had been walking behind, keeping watch of their six which is why they weren't in there.
"Help! Jay Jay, help!" He heard you scream and racked his brain from where that could be coming from because you were an ocean away, no way were you actually there.
"Dude, your sister's in there!" And Mouse took off running.
Jay quickly caught up to him. "What? She's not here! She's at home in Chicago!"
"No, she's not! You couldn't bear to leave her, so you brought her with you!"
Okay, now Jay knew he was caught in the midst of a nightmare because he would never do that. He would never bring a little girl into the midst of a war where she could get hurt or killed. Damn that melatonin he took that night because he was currently in so deep a sleep that he couldn't wake up.
"Jay Jay!"
He took off running again and came up to the edge of the Humvee. Your leg was crushed under it and it was one of the only parts of the vehicle that hadn't caught fire...yet. He needed to get you out and he needed to get you out fast or else you would be burned to death. But, to do that, he knew he'd be sacrificing your leg.
"Mouse! Get me a tourniquet and the biggest knife you have! Make sure you sterilize it!" Jay shouted. You let out a whine.
"You're doing a field amputation?" Mouse asked as he grabbed the supplies.
"I don't have any other choice." You let out a whimper. "Hey, hey, look at me. Focus on me. I'm gonna get you out of there."
"P-Promise?" you asked as tears ran down your cheeks.
"I promise. Now I need you to hold really still and be a brave girl, okay? Can you be brave for me?" You nodded as Mouse handed Jay the equipment for the tourniquet. "This is going to hurt," Jay warned you as he slid the piece of fabric underneath your leg and then started tying it.
You screamed out in agony.
"I know, I know. But, It's gotta be tight. It's gotta be tight, kiddo."
"Jay! Nine o'clock!"
Jay turned to his left and pointed his gun straight at the combatant.
"Jay...Jay..." he heard your voice wavering as you tried to get his attention. But, it didn't sound like your voice. It sounded lower, more mature even. "Jay, please." the voice that sounded like you was pleading now. "Jay Jay, please. You're- You're safe."
Jay snapped his eyes open.
There you were, at sixteen years old, holding your hands up in surrender. He was home, in Chicago.
"Jay, please," you whispered once more.
It was only when he looked down that he realized he must've thought you were the combatant in his dream because he had his service weapon pointed straight at you.
He dropped his gun onto his bed. "Y/N, I- you gotta believe me. That wasn't--"
But you were already running out of his room to grab your keys and get as far away from Jay as possible.
***
Will was awoken to a loud knocking on his door at 2:37 in the morning. "Who the fuck is here right now?" he muttered as he rubbed his eyes and stood up and threw on a shirt.
But, all his anger at being woken up at this ungodly hour washed away as he looked through the peep-hole and saw you, tears still streaming down your face.
He yanked the door open. "Y/N, what are you doing here?"
"He pointed a gun at me!" you wailed as you entered.
Will shut the door and made his way over to you. "Who? Did you tell Jay? Where were you?"
"Jay was the one who did it, Will! He pointed the- the gun right at me!"
Will's breath caught in his throat. He had his hunches that Jay was having nightmares again based on what you had told him and based on him falling asleep while driving and based on his blood work, but he didn't think they'd have gotten this bad. "Are you okay? he asked you quietly.
You shook your head and Will led you over to the couch.
"Do you want to talk about it?"
You sighed. "I heard him scream, so I woke up to see what was wrong. When I walked- When I walked into his room he was squeezing his pillow with his hand like he was holding something. He was dripping sweat."
You paused and took a deep breath.
"It's okay," Will told you. Take your time."
"Then, he just, he just whipped around and grabbed his gun from- from on top of his nightstand. I don't why it wasn't in the safe where it usually is. And that's when he..."
"That's when he pointed it at you?"
You nodded as tears rolled down your cheeks. "I said his name over and over and he finally snapped out of it."
"And that's when you came here?"
You nodded again.
"Well, how about we put on a movie, and then you can try to get some sleep. I'll stop over at Jay's tomorrow when you're at school. I'm pretty sure you have some clothes here just in case."
"Thanks, Will."
"No problem, Short Stack."
***
Jay heard a knock on his door the next day. Will had texted him and told him that you were safe and at his place because Jay had been blowing up Will's phone looking for you. So, at least he wasn't worried about that anymore.
Jay sipped his beer and waited for the knocking to stop, but it just became increasingly louder.
"Jay, open the damn door!"
Reluctantly, with beer still in hand, Jay stood up and opened his apartment door. "What the hell are you doing here?" Jay asked.
"Gimme that," Will said as he ripped the beer bottle from Jay's hand after he'd entered his apartment. "And, for your information, I'm making sure you're not drinking yourself to death." He looked around at the two other empty beer bottles on the counter. It wasn't even one o'clock in the afternoon yet. "Which, I guess I came just in time."
"Just let me drink it." Jay tried to take the bottle back, but Will held it out of his reach. Then, he made his way over to the kitchen sink and poured it out.
"Shit, man. I paid for that."
"I don't really give a damn right now, Jay. You pointed a fucking gun at our little sister. She came to my place bawling last night. You're lucky she didn't get into a car accident because of how distraught she was when she was driving."
"I know, I know. I fucked up, okay?"
"Oh, yeah, you fucked up all right. This is probably the single-handed worse thing you've done in your entire life."
"Did you just come here to lecture me?" Jay yelled. "If so, the door's that way and you can get the hell out!"
Will sighed. "I didn't come here just to do that, but I needed to get that out first. You need to talk to someone about this, Jay."
"I'm talking to you. Isn't that enough?"
"A trained professional."
"You are a trained professional."
"I'm a trained medical professional, not a trained psychological professional."
Jay sat on the couch and put his head in his hands. That scene from last night had been replaying in his head for almost twelve hours now.
Him hearing your voice...seeing you with your hands raised while they were shaking...how much of whisper your voice was...the feeling of guilt that swallowed him whole when he noticed he was holding his service weapon...you sprinting out of the house in the middle of the night...
"Jay," Will said, snapping him out of his thoughts. "You still with me?"
"Yeah, yeah, I'm still here. Sorry." He paused. "Last night, I guess I was so out of it that I forgot to lock up my gun and left it on my bedside table. If I had just locked it up, this wouldn't have happened. If I just wouldn't have taken the melatonin, this wouldn't have happened. If I was just able to fucking sleep this wouldn't have happened."
"How long haven't you been sleeping?" Will asked gently.
"The nightmares started when I shot that little girl, Will."
"Jay, it's been weeks since that happened."
"I know. And they just keep getting worse. At first, it was Y/N who was the little girl I shot when I was chasing the offenders when the bullet went through the illegal daycare center. And then, they started turning into me being overseas and Y/N somehow being with me and her being shot over there. Last night- last night was the worst."
"You don't have to tell me what happened if you don't want to."
"Thank you," Jay replied. Because in all honestly, that was one of the worst nightmares he's ever had since getting on his medication.
"Is that why you're sleeping on Y/N's bedroom floor?"
"How'd you know? I didn't even think she knew."
"She knows. She said she'll wake up in the middle of the night and you'll be there, on her floor, with a pillow and a blanket, and you'll sneak out before she wakes up."
"I just, I needed to make sure she was safe. I needed to make sure she was still alive, Will."
"I really think you need to talk to someone. Maybe ask about getting your meds increased."
"I've been on the same dose for over two years now. You really think they'd need to be upped?"
"It's a possibility. But, we need to talk about Y/N now."
Jay sighed. "Yeah. Yeah, we do. I have no idea what to do, Will. I'm supposed to be her legal guardian and I couldn't even keep her safe. I was the one who made her feel not safe."
"I know it's gonna be hard for you to hear this," Will started, "but, she doesn't want to come back here for a little while."
"Yeah, I figured that when she didn't answer my texts."
"Listen, she and I talked this morning, and if you go see someone today or tomorrow and see someone about getting your meds upped, she'd stay with me for two weeks so the meds have time to get into your system, and then we'll go from there."
"So, all I have to do is get my meds upped?"
"Well, that might be the best option. But, I still think you should talk to someone, Jay. Either a therapist or a psychiatrist or even a veteran's support group might be helpful."
"Okay. But, can you just tell her that I'm so sorry? And that, I wasn't in my right mind? I didn't know it was her, I swear."
"I know you didn't. Now, no more drinking, you have appointments to schedule." Will paused. "Have you talked to Voight? Maybe you shouldn't be working while you're trying to figure this out."
"I do not need to take time off."
"Yes, you do. Do you want our little sister to hate you or not?"
"Fine. I'll take two weeks furlough."
"That's all I ask. Please do not get shitfaced because I will babysit you if I have to."
"Then who's gonna stay with Y/N?"
"I'll figure something out."
***
"You're sure I'm good to go back?" you asked Will as you walked into yours and Jay's apartment building.
"Y/N, he hasn't had a nightmare in a week and a half. Everything's gonna be fine," Will answered.
"I know. I know I shouldn't be scared of my own brother, but, uh, what happened that night, it was..."
"Terrifying?" Will finished for you.
"Yeah, that."
"Well, I'll be there the entire weekend in case anything happens."
"Thanks, Will."
***
Later that night, you laid in bed, trying to fall asleep. But, you couldn't. You just couldn't shake the feeling of walking into Jay's room to try and wake him from a nightmare and having a gun pointed right at you. You couldn't shake the feeling that maybe tonight was the night that Jay would have a nightmare and end up sleepwalking into your bedroom with his gun drawn.
So, you were sitting up in bed, at 3:30 am, having just finished your last movie an hour and a half ago with your lamp on and the current book you were reading open.
You heard the sound of your door opening and looked up.
You held your breath.
Jay was in your room.
"Y/N, what are you still doing awake?" he asked, slowly moving closer to you so he didn't scare you.
You sighed in relief. He was conscious. He was awake.
"I can't sleep," you answered honestly.
"Is it because of me? That you can't sleep?" You looked down and that was all the confirmation Jay needed. "Look, I'm sorry. I know I've said it a lot these past few weeks, but I'm truly sorry. You have to understand that it wasn't me."
"I know. I just, you scared you me, Jay. I was scared I was going to die that night."
"Y/N, I wouldn't be able to live with myself if that happened."
"And you haven't had any nightmares?"
"None in over ten days," he answered.
"Then why are you in my room? I know you come in here sometimes after you have nightmares."
"I came to make sure you were sleeping. Will mentioned you were nervous and I know you don't like to sleep when you're nervous."
"Oh." You paused. "Can you tell me what you were dreaming about? When you pointed the gun at me?"
"Y/N, I'd really prefer not to. I don't want to go back there."
"I get it," you said. "It's traumatic. Like how even though Dad isn't drinking anymore, I don't want to go back and live with him."
"Exactly."
You moved over. "You can come sit if you want." Jay sat down on the bed next to you and handed you Beary so that he didn't squash him. You closed your book. "Can you tell me a story?"
"Like a fairytale like when you were little and Mom would make me read those princess books to you?" Jay chuckled.
"No, maybe a you and Will story or a me and you story from I was little and don't remember much?"
Jay thought for a second until he found the perfect one filed away in his brain under Y/N stories. "Do you remember that time when you brought your first aid kit on your bike because you had just made it in girl scouts?"
"A little, but not really."
"Okay, I'll tell you that one then."
"Jay Jay!" little seven-year-old you exclaimed as you run up to Jay. "Ride bikes with me?"
"I think my bike has a flat tire, but I can get my skateboard. Is that okay with you?" Jay asked.
"Yeah! But Mommy said you gotta wear a helmet because she said we gotta protect our heads," you told him while putting your hands on your hips.
"That's right! How could I forget that? I'll be right back and then we can go, okay?"
"Okay!"
While Jay ran off to find his bike, you ran off to get your first aid kit that you had just made in girl scouts and Beary to put in the little basket on the front of your purple princess bike.
You waited for him and when he reappeared with his skateboard and helmet, he asked what you had.
"Beary and this I made in girl scouts yesterday," you told him. "It has bandaids and this white tape and white soft stuff and wipies."
You handed it to him to take a look. Inside, there were different sizes of bandaids, medical tape, gauze, and antiseptic wipes. "This is such a good first aid kit, kiddo!"
"Thank you!"
You got your bike out of the garage and clipped on your helmet. Jay pressed down on the horn attached to your handlebars before stepping onto his skateboard.
You two rode down the street and then Jay got to a ramp that some kids had made. There was one ramp, a gap, and then another ramp.
"Jay Jay!" you exclaimed. "Can you go on that?"
Jay had gone on homemade skateboard ramps like those hundreds of times. Hell, he'd even made one home and he and Will would do kickflips in the air when going on it when your guys' mom was home. She'd have a heart attack if she saw her sons doing that.
"I can even do a trick while I'm in the air," Jay told you.
"Really?" you asked, your eyes going wide.
"Really. Wanna see?"
"Yes please!"
Jay started a few yards back from the first ramp and started propelling himself forward, gaining speed. Then, your jaw dropped as he skated onto the first ramp and into the air.
"Whoa," you whispered to yourself as he did his kickflip in midair between the two ramps.
But, Jay had overestimated the distance between the two ramps, so when he landed, he landed on the road and not the ramp with way too much force, causing him to fall off his skateboard and land on the ground, scraping his hands across the road.
"Jay Jay!" you yelled as you quickly kicked down your kickstand and grabbed your first aid kit. "Are you okay?" you asked.
Jay stood up and grabbed his skateboard. "I'm fine. Just a little blood, nothing to worry about."
"You're bleeding? Where? I can fix it."
He held up his right hand where his palm was a little bloody. You started to open your first aid kit and Jay knew there was no point in arguing with you, so he just crouched down to your height.
You grabbed a bandaid and started to open it. "You gotta clean it out first, nurse," Jay told you.
"Oh. With the wipey-thingies?"
"Yes, with those."
You opened one of the antiseptic wipes--with Jay's help because those were really hard to open!--and wiped down his palm. Then, you put the bandaid on.
"All better!" you exclaimed as you put the trash back into your first aid kit. "Can we keep going?" you asked.
"We sure can!"
You ran back to your bike and put the first aid kit into the basket next to Beary and then you got on your bike and caught up to Jay. And then, you were off around the block again.
"We really thought you were going to be a doctor or a nurse after that," Jay said. "But, then you realized you hated both math and science." He looked down at you. "Oh, you're asleep."
He set your book on your nightstand and turned off the lamp. Then, he slowly crept out of your room and closed the door, and went back to his room to fall into a nightmare-less sleep.
Despite Will sleeping on the couch, things were back to normal in yours and Jay's apartment and neither of you could've been happier.

[ateez] S A N ➱ baby daddy au
Tumblr media
YOU HAVE TO RAISE HIS SON AFTER HE LEAVES. MAFIA SAN.
warnings: teen pregnancy
a/n: sorry ya’ll I accidentally posted this on my main lol - @atinybitofau
• raising a son on your own was hard.
• raising a son whose genes were on par to his notorious father was even harder—
• a hooligan. a mischievous troublemaker.
• an eyesore in morality.
• and yes, your son was just like him.
• cold. ruthless. blood thirsty.
• but unlike San, your son loved you enough never to leave you.
• appreciated the things you did for him enough to stay.
• “Eomma..”
• you turn on your side when your son interrupts your slumber,
• injuries blatant on his tethered arm.
• raising a child who’s now 13 since you were 16 never easy.
• “Where were you, Ari?”
• he sits at the edge of your bed and leans for the warmth only a mother could give. “I was trying to get your medicine.. but I ended up causing a scene and the store owner kicked me out.”
• you sigh letting him lay down beside you. “It’s just a little cold. You don’t need to go and risk your life to save mine.”
• he wants to ask you.
• he’s old enough..
• why hasn’t his father came back to be the one the take care of you?
• to take care of him.
• why do you have to suffer alone?
• “Ari, just do me a favor and take care of yourself the way you do for me.” you cuddle into your sons warmth too. “That’s all I need.”
• but you’re lying.
• you’re getting sicker.
• and he can’t take it anymore.
• he goes to lower than the low to find something to save you, his mother.
• eventually ending up tied up in San’s gang house.
• brutally beat for intervening a drug heist—
• “Alright you little shit,” San holds your son up by the collar, blood running down his face mixed with his tears. “I don’t care that you’re 13 years old. Hell you could’ve been 10 and I’ll still beat the living crap out of you. No one just comes barging into a drug heist for no reason. That’s not just a coincidence.”
• it is.
• it really is.
• and maybe god was just giving him a sign.
• because you were on the verge of dying—
• and his own son being dealt his life and in the hands of his own father,
• yet San still didn’t know what was going on.
• what sign god was trying to give him.
• “I have to admit.” San runs a finger down his son’s chiseled jaw and smirks. “You’ve got a nice face. But in a couple minutes, you might not even be able to recognize it anymore.”
• “I-I-I was just trying to get medicine for my mom! I swear.”
• San really needed to get a clue.
• not all drugs were recreational.
• and some—
• some can actually save lives not just make dirty money.
• “You think I’ll believe that sissy crap?”
• Ari shudders looking to his torn up jeans. “H-her pictures in my wallet. I swear, she’s the only thing I’ll do anything illegal for. I promise I wasn’t trying to fuck anything up. She’d kill me if I got involved. Kill herself if I pushed myself too far.”
• he’s convinced at the desperation in the poor kid’s voice.
• normally not as merciful but he digs through the kid’s pocket for the picture anyway.
• and he should be glad he did because shit—
• the picture of you made him go from 100 to 0 real quick.
• “Y/n?”
• “T-that’s her! That’s my mom.”
• San glances up at the beat up kid, horrified.
• horrified at the sight.
• that he was basically beating to death a walking replica of himself.
• an age far enough that fit the time he left you.
• “You’re telling me my high school sweetheart..” San’s bloody fingers curl around your picture. “The woman you’ve been trying to steal medication for is your mom? The woman in this picture.”
• he’s at first in denial.
• that the kid he almost beat to death was your son.
• but denial hits him even harder the chances he could also be the father.
• “M-my mom is everything to me.” Ari bawls his last tears out begging for his own father to spare his life. or anything to save yours. “She’s only got me. I’ve only got her. S-sir please. At least save her. If you wanna kill me sir, please save my mom first.”
• his jaw clenches,
• still knealt down on one knee propped in front of his pleading son.
• studying every feature of his face.
• how on par everything was to his own.
• San was beating up his son, he realized.
• holy shit he was about to kill his own son.
• “Why didn’t she tell me?”
• “W-what?” his son chokes. “What do you mean?”
• “Fucking hell— kid, I think I’m your dad.”
• the five days that your son was held captive was long enough for your body to grow cold and weaker.
• laying in a hospital bed nearly blacked out.
• your son cries over your body as you sleep.
• hoping he’s not too late.
• not too late to give you the one thing that might be able to keep you alive.
• a husband?
• finally a father to your child.
• “You’re the husband?” the doctor finds San watching from the doorway awkwardly glancing at the black dressed men who towered behind him. “You’ve got quite the entourage there, sir. But not even an army of soldiers would be able to save your wife right now. She’s hanging on a thin line. Barely holding on. That woman needs a miracle if she wants to live the next good years of her life.”
• San watches as his son that he never knew about cries over you.
• wishes you would’ve told him..
• he would’ve stayed.
• would’ve loved you.
• why were you always so selfish? always wanting to do things that pushed you too far even if there were another option available.
• “Eomma.”
• you hear everything.
• your son.
• San.
• “Ma, I’m sorry I wasn’t able to get the medicine. I got into trouble again, ma. I’m sorry.” Ari folds his hand over your limp one’s. “B-but I have something even better. Someone who could help you and me. He can take care of us, ma.”
• it hurts.
• you want to wake up for your son because he deserves the world.
• he deserves a fight for the both of you but the option you chose came short.
• in the past, the option of never telling San in the first place of his own son.
• “Ma.. he’s gonna talk to you okay? I’m gonna let him talk to you.” Ari sniffles and suddenly your hand gets replaced with a different warmth. “He’s gonna tell you it’s gonna be okay. I love you, eomma. I love you. We’re gonna be okay.”
• it’s almost enough.
• your heart beats a little faster.
• burns a little more so you could breathe on your own.
• it’s definitely working.
• “You shoulda told me, bubba.”
• the nickname San had given you years ago,
• a nickname you thought you’d never hear again, rings in your ear and that light so far away,
• it gets further.
• “You shoulda told me about him. About you.” he lifts your hand against his trembling lips. “13 years? 13 years after I tell you to take care of yourself and now you’re almost dying. Come on now. My girl was a fighter. Pushed herself harder than she wanted to.”
• his voice is like a mantra—
• a dream that gives you a little bit more of life you we’re starting to lose.
• “Bubba, you were the love of my life. And I didn’t tell you enough how much I appreciated you. I know it may be too late and if god forbid I do lose you, I will make sure our baby stays safe okay?”
• you think if you were awake right now you’d be crying.
• as if a weight lifted off your shoulders.
• cause the one person who could save you right now—you and your son,
• was right here.
• ready to go merciless to keep you two safe.
• “I left loving you. And I’ll come back loving you. 13 years only kept us apart. But let me tell you, y/n, it never stopped me from loving you.”
• he’s unsure when he lets go of your hand.
• usually gets what he wants with one word—
• cause he’s a notorious mobster.
• but let’s just say you were the one thing he wanted he could’ve never gotten even with two words.
• 3?
• “I love you.” he continues. “And if I’m gonna have to love our son the way I should’ve loved you then so be it.”
• but life’s not like movies where you wake up right during a miracle.
• this miracle takes time.
• and after an EXPENSIVE deal of money and medicine to keep you alive,
• a year it takes for you to finally open your eyes.
• to a nice hospital bed room.
• filled with flowers and the reminiscent scent of old spice and San.
• your hair’s a bit longer.
• the sun’s definitely brighter.
• but not as bright as the smile you see once you turn to the side.
• “Good morning beautiful.” San reaches his forehead against yours. “How were your dreams?”
• you choke on a decent reply. “S-San?”
• “The one and only.”
• “Where’s— Where’s Ari? Where’s my—“
• “Our?” San chuckles softly. “You mean our son.”
• you kind of remember.
• it takes a while to remember the voices and the dreams in your head.
• how waking up to find them real was surreal on its own.
• “He’s at school, bubba.” San cradles your face in the palm of his hand staring at you like he was hypnotized. “I’ll have someone pick him up. Tell him mommy’s awake.”
• “San..” you shake your head in his hand. “How is this real?”
• “Our son might be a miracle worker. Brought us together the way we made him. Brought me so I could keep you alive.”
• cheesy as you remember.
• although this handsome and older version of your old flame you aren’t too sure.
• “So you just show up while I’m in a coma and play daddy while I sleep?” you hoarsely chuckle while he smiles against your lips. “Even after 13 years, you won’t grudge against me for not telling you?”
• “I can’t blame you for trying to save yourselves.” he admits with his lips still on yours. “I wasn’t good enough for you. I know still I’m not. But I’m gonna try this time. Even if I have to pretend I’m not who I am sometimes.”
• you two are interrupted by a crying teenager.
• one you remembered resembled San.
• but now them standing right next to each other,
• looking like two carbon copies and a surreal dream in your head.
• maybe you are dead...
• “Ma!” he shoves his father away abruptly. “Look ma! I brought dad! He helped pay your debt, pays for my school. Even finished the hospital bills.”
• you glare at your always boisterous ex boyfriend and long lost father to your son.
• “You did what?”
• “Did I mention this was my way of getting back at you for not telling me about my 14 year old son?”
• “San how the hell am I gonna pay you back?”
• you just woke up.
• and the doctor runs in ready to sedate to keep you stable for at least more than 24 hours.
• but the way San looks at you is enough.
• him being there like your life long medication itself.
• holding your hand while your son holds your other one proposing,
• “Marry me. And we can call it even.”

summary: reader gives spencer a really cute holiday gift, and he really, really appreciates it (spencer reid x gn!reader)
word count: 2.7k
author’s note: this was supposed to be a blurb lmao. also anon, u did not specify gender, so this is gender neutral!!! also, this is for the holiday season and isn’t specific to christmas (aside from mentions of secret santa gift exchange). also also, spencer knits canonically.
I KNOW WHAT YOU DID.
Rolling your eyes, you closed the seemingly menacing pop-up on your screen and continued to finish up your paperwork. A few seconds passed before a second pop-up appeared.
DO NOT CLOSE MY MESSAGES!!!
You heaved a sigh and stood, making your way to Garcia’s lair. Pushing the door open, you skipped a greeting entirely and chided, “Dude, you gotta stop sending scary pop-ups to my computer. People are gonna start thinking that unsubs are hacking the FBI and threatening agents.”
From beneath her horn-rimmed glasses, Penelope tutted and chewed the end of her pen. “You are no fun. Besides, you are forgetting my immensely cool and mysterious origin story. ‘The Black Queen’ was not one of the good guys!”
“That’s true,” you admitted, “but you’re one of us now, so that means no more suspicious messages unless you want to be fired.”
She gave you a contemptuous glare, “Not gonna happen. Also, I’m really shocked that you thought you could distract me from the matter at hand.”
Furrowing your brow, you replied, “I don’t even know what the matter at hand is.”
Garcia’s smirk curled devilishly. “You and Reid.”
Further confusion ensued. “And what about us?”
She groaned and threw her head back, “Oh my god, you really are dragging this out. I know that you did not get him for Secret Santa, but you still got him a present.” The quirking of her eyebrows was enough to indicate that she meant more than what she was saying, and you were hesitant to explore the implications.
“Okay, first of all, it is illegal to look at my credit card history, and secondly, he is my best friend, so yes, I got him a present. Is that a crime?”
“Certainly not...but this does solidify the fact that you’re in love with him.”
“Dear god, Garcia, I am not in love with Spencer Reid.”
The look she gave you was one of utter incredulity. Her disbelief was so strong in fact that she did not deign your statement worthy of verbal response. Instead, she sat there. Staring. And under her rather unnerving gaze, you began to fidget, your resolve slowly dissolving. Squeezing your eyes shut, you relented.
“Okay, maybe I am the littlest, tiniest bit in love with Spencer Reid.”
“Well, duh, but what I really need to know is when you’re gonna tell him.”
“When? Garcia, this is not a ‘when’ question. Actually, it’s not a question at all because never in a million years would I ever tell him.”
“Why not?” she exclaimed, gesturing with her pen still in hand. “You spend almost all of your time together, at work and at home! You guys go to bookstores and museums and cafes. He talks about his silly little statistics, and you listen, and you make your silly little jokes, and he laughs; you’re a match made in heaven! And he’s so obviously into you! That boy writes the definition of heart eyes every time he looks at you.”
Steeling your jaw, you rebutted, “That’s just not true.” Your voice faltered. “Sure, I’ve noticed a certain...affection, but he does not love me in the same way I love him.” You let out a shaky breath before deciding to continue. “Did you know that in all of our years of friendship he’s never touched me? I mean sure, it’s happened once or twice in the field, but that was always an accident. And yeah, I know he has his thing with germs, but don’t you think if he liked me as anything more than a friend, he would have done something by now? A pinky promise, a teasing elbow jab—I don’t know—something?”
Penelope’s face softened, and she tried to recover your confidence. “He’s like that with everyone! He likes his space. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him initiate contact with anyone on the team.”
“But isn’t that the point, Garcia? I’m just like everyone else to him. He wants space from me.” Bitterness roiled in your stomach and dripped from your tongue. “Not very romantic, huh?”
Trying to piece together a counterargument, she stumbled slightly, “No, I will give you that.” She paused. “But I think he’s just scared. Not of germs, not of you, but of his feelings for you. He’s not the most well-adjusted person I know.”
You chuckled lightly, gradually resuming your normally light-hearted disposition, “I would agree.”
“Well, I hope he likes his present.”
The semblance of a tired smile graced your face. “Yeah, me too.”
You turned to walk out and had almost made it out the door when her voice stopped you. “Also, I will stop sending suspicious pop-ups to your computer.”
Peeking back through the doorway, you grinned.“I think it’d be for the best. Texting does exist for a reason.”
———
It had been a really good day. It wasn’t often where an entire day in the bullpen passed only with friends and laughter and love and light, but today was one of them. Snow fell silently outside the windows, but everything inside felt warm like laughing so hard that your cheeks ache and your stomach hurts.
By now, a sort of daze had befallen the team as the giddiness wore on and the alcohol set in, fuzzing eyes and minds. Most everyone had paired off after the gift exchange a few minutes prior, but no one had drifted too far. (Maybe it was the team instinct: never stray too far from the pack, but it was also likely that everyone just enjoyed the proximity to their loved ones, their family.) Garcia seemed to be in heaven, tucked into Morgan’s side on a couch that had been dragged haphazardly into the bullpen, and murmured conversation stretched on with intermittent peals of laughter. Predictably, Hotch and Rossi had sequestered themselves to a nearby desk, their scotch glasses never dry and grins never fading. (Hotch during the holidays was something special. His often frigid demeanor thawed, and out from the ice peeked his former self who wasn’t so serious. (His rare giggles were quite the surprise though.)) Emily and JJ sat on the latter’s desk, discussing anything and everything (except for psychopathic murderers), while you had pulled your chair up to sit beside Spencer at his desk.
“So are you pleased about your gift from Rossi?” you asked, a faint grin playing at your lips.
“I am,” he replied, clearly enthused. “But I don’t think I’ll ever understand how he managed to get an authentic TARDIS key.” His finger traced the edge of the authenticity certificate Rossi had bestowed on him that sat on his desk; the key was already hanging around his neck.
You raised your eyebrows and nodded. “Well, money is a powerful thing.”
“True,” he mused before furrowing his brow. “But that’s another thing, the expense limit is not a suggestion, but he always treats it like it is. Puts all the rest of us to shame.”
“There’s no shame in an inexpensive gift!” you argued. “As long as time or thought was put in, it doesn’t matter.”
“Penelope surely didn’t skimp on time spent for yours,” he said, pointing to the homemade knitted hat and glove set on the desk beside you.
“No, I did not!” she yelled from her spot on the couch, somehow having managed to pick up on your conversation, and you laughed. “Lots and lots of time and love was poured into those!” Her speech was slightly slurred as her eggnog intake began to infringe on her lucidity.
“I know this, and I love you for it,” you beamed at her.
“I love you too.” She proceeded to bury her face in Derek’s shoulder who could only chuckle at her antics.
You picked up a glove and inspected it. “I truly cannot comprehend how she made these. Circular knitting needles are my living hell.”
Sitting up with renewed interest, Spencer said, “If you need help with them, I could lend a hand. I knit my mom a sweater this year, and I think I finally understand how they work if you ever wanted me to show you.”
“I’d love that.” Hopefully, the flush of your cheeks could be blamed on the wine you had had. “Speaking of your mom, how is she? Are you excited to see her?”
The corners of his mouth turned up, and he nodded. “She’s good; her nurse said she’s been doing really well lately. She’s less paranoid, more alert, so I’m really excited. I think this will be a good trip.”
“I’m so glad!” You sat there with a dumb smile for a moment, your mind lagging for a moment (damn wine) before realization crashed onto you. “Wait, speaking of your mom, I have something for you!” He cocked his head to the side as you stood up and went to your desk, rifling through one of the drawers. Pulling out a neatly wrapped gift, you trotted back over and offered it to him. “This is for you.”
He took it, running a hand over the wrapping paper (it was the one with cowboys wearing Santa hats that you had found when shopping together a couple weeks before, his favorite). “(Y/N), you didn’t have to get me anything.”
Shrugging lightly, you said, “Yeah, I know we did the whole gift exchange thing, but I saw it, and I thought of you and had to get it.” And you definitely did not actively seek this out for him in the search for his perfect present. Which is something somebody who is definitely not in love with him would do.
He looked up at you, eyes already glassy and searching your face for something. You weren’t sure what he was looking for, but then he met your gaze with unwavering certainty. “Thank you, (Y/N/N).”
“No problem, ya big sap, now open it already.”
Ever the cautious one, he opened it carefully, sliding a finger under the edge of the paper and gently easing the tape up. The small action of unwrapping a present so attentively was just so Spencer your heart swelled as you suppressed the growing grin. From the paper emerged a book.
“‘A Collection of Poems by Geoffrey Chaucer,’” he murmured, smoothing a hand over the cover.
When he didn’t immediately react, seemingly frozen, nerves crept up the back of your neck, and you sputtered out some sort of reasoning. “I know your mom used to read Chaucer to you; you mentioned ‘The Parliament of Fowls’ when we worked the Fisher King case, and it’s in this collection, and I thought it’d be fun for you to take it to Vegas and read it together and—”
Your explanation came to an abrupt halt as Spencer threw his arms around you, enveloping you in a bone-crushing hug. Immediately melting into it, you embraced him with a similar intensity and buried your face in his neck. Something in his touch allowed you to let go, and it felt like the moment you could finally exhale.
A breath you’d been holding for longer than you could remember.
You could smell the cologne that he wore for ‘special occasions’ and his shampoo and something so faint but so undeniably him, and his hand slid up to the back of your head, cradling it in the most tender fashion, and you felt like you could cry. So you pulled him closer, and he did the same.
The hug definitely lasted longer than what most people would find comfortable, but neither of you could be convinced to retreat until you became aware of the silence that had settled over the bullpen. You felt the many pairs of eyes on you, and it pained you to pry yourself off of Spencer. Breathless, you looked around at the shocked faces of your co-workers who sat with mouths agape and eyes wide. You coughed slightly to try to ease the tension and then for some reason beyond your knowledge, you decided to wave at them in the most awkward fashion. Sitting back down, you could feel stares lingering as conversation resumed, and you looked up at Reid who looked like a deer in headlights. You laughed quietly, tugging his sleeve until he received the memo and sat down again.
He cleared his throat and avoided eye contact, glancing at his present. “Thank you for the book, (Y/N/N).”
“You’re welcome,” you replied, your tone earnest as ever. Still reeling from the hug, you faintly became aware of the speed of your heartbeat and unconsciously brought a hand to your chest. You attempted fruitlessly to sort through your raging thoughts, while across from you, Spencer tried to think of something, anything to say now.
He couldn’t really believe he’d done it. His germaphobia remained everpresent, but somehow the emotion welling in his chest at your sincerity and benevolence had overridden it, and he felt helpless in stopping himself. His heart had lurched in his chest as if it was suddenly struck with the need to be in your hands, propelling him forward. But it wasn’t like he hadn’t wanted to. He had wanted to for so long, but he’d never mustered the courage before. There was something so special, so intimate about touch, and so many people gave it so freely, and he just didn’t understand how they could allow themselves the indulgence. The absolute luxury of giving and receiving love. Spencer often felt like he sat by a window, watching his life pass by outside of it, and he had always wanted to open it, to really experience all the joy and all the grief and all the love that was waiting for him, but it was scary to open himself up to those feelings and the hurt that could ensue. So, he usually sat discontented by his window. But today, it was like he’d grabbed a hammer and smashed the glass completely and stepped through to be able to return the love you had offered him.
It felt so good.
But now, he had no idea what to do. He stood there in the midst of the shattered glass, and deep down, he knew had to take the last couple steps to get to you, but he didn’t know how.
His fingers fidgeted in his lap as he analyzed your blank face, trying to find something to give him the next direction when a realization hit him. “I didn’t get you anything!”
Drawn back from the depths of whatever thought you had been stuck in, you met his gaze and shook your head. “Seriously, don’t worry about it. I broke the gift exchange rules to get you something, so you had no way of knowing.”
“But I feel terrible.” His eyebrows drew together, and he frantically tried to think of some way to repay you. “You get me an incredibly lovely and wonderfully thoughtful gift, and I’m the loser who didn’t get his best friend a present!”
“Spencer—”
“Wait!” he interrupted, a revelation arriving. (He knew how to take the last steps.) “When I get back after the holidays, do you want to get dinner with me? Then, we can go to the bookstore on 10th that you love, and you can pick out a book, and I’ll pay.”
Your eyes widened further than you thought possible, and your heart which had only partially recovered was off to the races once again. You decided to take the plunge and ask the burning question. “Do you—um, do you mean like a date?”
“Yeah,” he answered, beaming so brightly. “Yes. Like a date. If you want to.”
You held each other’s gaze, and the warmth that had filled the bullpen all day filled your chests, and you smiled so hard your faces hurt.
So silly, you thought, to have wasted all this time boarding up my affection and keeping it tucked away, safe and useless.
So ridiculous, he thought, to have sat by that stupid window for so many years when the real thing feels so sweet.
“I think I’d like that a lot.”

Diary of a lost doe, part 1
A short fic where my character Annabelle writes in diaries
Fresh off losing her parents, Annabelle Flaches must contend with trying to fend for herself and her baby sister Angelica. And with Angelica talking to a mysterious green orb when she thinks Annabelle isn’t watching, things are only at the tip of the iceberg.
This is for me and Aquillis’s “half and half” AU, our ‘main’ AU. not to be confused with Aqui’s pack universe which is her underground re-write.
Due to the length I'm splitting this into two parts. This is part 1, part 2 is here!
Diary Enry 1, Day I dunno.
Okay here it is. First diary entry I guess. Gotta keep it brief, writing instruements are hard.
Been a few months since that day. We’re doing fine. Angie started another garden. Moved to a new spot.
Got some new things for the house. Old car door and a tire. Not sure what I’ll do with the tire gonna use the door as part of wall.
Finished roof this morning. Good thing 2, might rain.
Angie still sleps bad if not next to me. Writing while she’s curled up. Wasn’t for scars on ear and having to sleep in same clothes she’d look like we’re still home.
Gotta sleep now.
Diary Entry 2
Maybe got a job. Illegal probs but $ is $
Angelica talked more today. Good sign? Maybe she relapses back into not talking but progress.
I never thought i’d miss her annoying stupid “hey lets go explore a cave and not tell anyone bout what we’ll do” self. Never thought about losing mum and pa ei
Shit crying. Bye.
Diary entry 3
Diary didn’t get too wet yesterday.Don’t think bout mom and pa it ends badly.
I can’t afford to break down even if Angie’s sleeping
If I break down then Angie will get upset
I won’t put her through it
I won’t
Diary entry 54
Had to leave town but am 600 $ richer
Angie’s quiet again. But she didn’t complain bout us leavin
gonna go for a city maybe. more risk but more money and places to live.
Jadetown’s the city. Dunno too much bout it but mum liked it.
Should get there in maybe a cuple weeks or so
Angie’s sound asleep. No kicking or anything so that’s good
Hope the city’s okay. Angie hates crowds.
Need somewhere with not a lot of crowds to live at
Diary Entry 63
Been a hot second. Settling in Jadetown’s pretty hard.
Find a quiet spot in the slums. Pretty shitty now, but the two of us can make it work
Angie still isn’t talking, but she kept close to me while we made our way through the crowds. She seemed fine as long as she held my hand
Lost her a couple times, but not for long. She seemed upset bout it.
Sorry Angie.
I’ll do better. I promise.
...
Diary Entry 169 (it’s the morning but fuck it)
The nightmare happened again.
Angelica having her ear scared by those monsters. mum and pa being taken away in exchange for us being set loose
Only it loops around and around before it’s just cries and blood and knives and screams and crying and they’re all surrounding me judging me for just failing everyone because you’re a fucking failure
Haven’t had it a while. Don’t upset yourself, Angie needs you.
Diary entry 169? Night
Angelica almost killed some street thugs.
we caught some dumbass looking punks bullying some sort of chao. I think it’s a chao
I ran up to one like an idiot and gout in their face to know what they’re doin, and the things went dark. I got knocked out on my ass, apparenlty the big brute that led them butted me in the head. Asshole didn’t even let me get ready
I came to to Angie trying to shake me awake. When I looked around the punks were gone, there were plant vines all over, and the other kids that had gathered were a mix of crapped their pants and mouths on the floor
I asked angie bout it and she just said she took care of them and that the punks had run off
What the hell did she do? Usually I’m the one saving her? But she was having none of it today.
Oh the chao’s fine, weirdass chao though. Never seen chao that just cause flowers to grow around them or in their footsteps.
Made 30 $
Rib’s hurting and headache, Angie fast asleep. Time for bed.
Diary Entry 170
Chao’s bak.
Visited Angie’s garden for a while watchin me watchin it. It waved and left right around Angie gettin up.
Showed up again when we got back home. Angie hasn’t seen it yet. Good thing, she wanted to bring it with us. We can’t afford three mouths.
I don’t like it. We save its ass and now its stalking us.
Made nothin.
Ribs hurt less. Still a bitch.
Diary entry 171
Angie’s found the “chao”
She talked to it all morning when she thought i was napping. Couldn’t sleep, too afraid of bad dreams.
It doesn’t make chao sounds. Or it does but really weird ones.
Then it turned a green light ball for a bit and back into a chao
Angie liked that.
I don’t trust it. Even less.
Need to watch it.
Angie’s relaxed.
Made 5$.
Diary Entry 172 morn
Nightmare again
Diary Entry 172 night
Angie got excited, claimed that she “found Trevor”
he lived near us back in our old home
Had to tell her no, every red mouse we see is not Trevor.
She says that Trevor and his family were gonna move here, pretty inistent too.
Man she gets caught up on the smallest things
Made 20$
Diary Entry 173
Chao returned while i was working. Left Angie on her own
Shes seemed like she was having a fun time being able to talk with someone
She’s not made friends much. Maybe i’m being too hard on the ‘chao’
Still gotta watch it. It could be manipulating her
Haven’t told her I know bout the chao yet.
Should i?
Not now. Angelica is sleeping.
Made 5$
Diary Entry 174
‘Trevor’ spotting 2. Angie wanted to go bug the person. So we went and sure enough as we got closer Angie changed her mind. It was a rat, not a mouse she said.
How can she tell the difference?
No Angie and chao visit. Unless it was while i slept in. but why would she be secretive bout it?
Saw the punk bitch again today. Looked like he crapped his pants when he saw Angie and she glared at him. That’s my sister.
Made 60$
Diary Entry 364
Got a new diary. Last entry for this one. Things going well. Got a good thing going for myself.
Angie found a new plant today, and now she’s got it in her garden.
Loved the look on her face when I got it for her.
Made 50$
Angelica’s chatted with the Chao again. Sort of like, is her guardian I think. Or is that its name
Guess good bye diary 1. Really weird to do but it feels right.
Angie’s sleeping well enough on her own. She mumbles but that seems it.
Do I do a good job keeping her safe
Diary 2 Entry 1
Managed to find a new diary. Keeping the old one just cause, and because I have the storage. For a couple of street bum does, we’ve got a decent enough house going. Been able to put it together from bits and bobs lying around, Angie even threw in her hat and added her own touches.
Looks ugly as hell with the plants holding things together and it’s all a mish mash of junk and crap I found, but it’s our mishmash of junk and crap.
Also saved up enough and am making enough to afford more than one pen and even some pencils. So I can write more often. Just felt like writing
Angie’s started to get more vocal again. I think she’s catching onto the fact the way I’ve been making money is less than honest a lot of the time.
I’m not going to sell myself for it though. I’m not degrading myself with that and nayone who fucking tries is going to a hospital.
And if any of those freaks dare go near Angie there won’t be enough left for a morgue to pick up.
Oh, and the chao’s still around. I can feel it. Angelica loves it, I think. I don’t trust it entirely, yet. But, it hasn't been a danger for the past months. So I think it’s actually a good thing.. Angie calls it Guardian. Maybe it's our own Guardian Angel.
Made 65$ today.
Good journal entry me. You got talkative. Writative? Whatever.
...
Diary 2 Entry 23
Got into a fight today, that was fun. The punks from when I helped save Guardian decided to jump me when Angelica was at the house. Guess they figured they could jump me without little sis to back me up. Too bad for them, when I don’t get suckered I’m damn good at defending myself. Sent them packing. Got a bit bruised. Why is it always the ribs with those guys.
Admittedly. I didn’t have to beat the crap out of them. But talk shit get hit, I say. They shouldn’t have been trash talking me when I was walking by.
-
Angelica was upset when I got back. Should’ve expected that, really. Don’t know why I didn’t think she would notice me being hurt, she’s got a sixth sense for that sort of thing. Always has. Kinda weird.
But, she did try and heal me a bit. Somehow, she’s gotten better at it -Ever since she's met Guardian, she’s gotten more control over that healing ability she has. I just need to make sure she doesn’t overdo herself again.
I don’t know anything much bout healing magic or whatever it is, but I don’t think what Angie has is normal. I think she uses herself for it. Whatever healing she tries to do just eats away at her. And whatever it was was enough to frighten Pa to move us in the first place
-
I think part of me might blame ANgie for it. For getting us out of the safety of where we lived near Agateton and moving.
But if we didn’t move would we really have been safe still. And it wasn’t Angie’s fault she did what she did, it was Pa who pushed for it and Mum who went with it.
So do I blame them? I don’t want to. The monsters that took them and hurt Angie are the ones to blame.
But they wouldn’t have found us if we didn’t move near that forest. But Mum and Pa couldn’t have seen it coming.
Ugh. brain hurts. Fuck this mind screw bullshite
Spent 123.54$ today. Groceries and supplies. Tampons are stupid expensive but I want to have a decent supply for when we need them. Also some food.
Made 13$. Gonna need to work more to recoup.
No idea if Angie talked with Guardian. She still thinks I don’t know anythin bout it.
At least, I think she doesn’t. She gets defensive and acts like she doesn’t know what I’m talking about.
I wonder why she does that. Wonder if it’s tied with how I react to her saying she’s found Trevor for the umpteenth time.
Maybe I should press her bout it. But I don’t want to get her worked up over nothin.
Okay that’s enough, my mind’s getting wandering now and I stay up if I do that.
...
Diary 2 Entry 54
Someone showed up with a bunch of robots earlier. Cause quite the commotion, sent people running, the usual.
Apparently he set up shop in the rich quarter and is causing all sorts of troubles. People have been coming to and fro a lot the past few days.
Angie got worried over explosions. Had to calm her down, explain that whatever it was probably wasn’t coming here. She asked me bout the people there and if they needed help - told her that someone would take care of the rich fops. That’s what they do after all. Who gives a shit about two practically orphaned kids.
Not sure if she bought it. Gotta keep an eye on her. Might need to pull an all nighter.
And we don’t have any energy drinks or coffee. I could go grab one, no one is gonna give a shit if I do, not in this current environment.
Gotta stop for now. Gotta focus on Angie not some stupid book.
Entry 55
Angie’s missin

Shroud: Withered Soul
A/N: Sorry it’s been a while. As of right now I’ve just been uploading stories I’ve written in my newspaper club, and now that I’ve graduated I hope that can now expand to short stories generally. I’m not gonna promise that posts from now on will be more consistent, but I would like to at least speed up my uploads a bit before they actually wind down, as I imagine I will be working on more stories in the future. Everything being uploaded right now is previous work, but nothing too old--probably like, from last year tops. This was completed sometime in May, I believe.
This is an introduction to a character I created called ‘Shroud,’ an amateur self-proclaimed ‘detective’ who exclusively investigates occult-based crimes and malefic.
Content Warning: death, descriptions of corpses, graphic descriptions of violence and pain, cults
[My blog will usually contain PG-13 stories, and as of right now I am writing some darker content, but I will tag anything that may be especially disturbing or uncomfortable. I’ll include this warning in my bio, too.]
----------
The corpse in front of me wasn’t all that disturbing by itself. I had seen dead people before–comes with the territory. I had been dead before. Murder rates in Twilight were, naturally, much higher than any other district in New Fable–especially further south of the district where I was–considering how much wild magic was around, and not even the police force sent here from the northern district of Bastion could do anything about it. So the corpse itself didn’t bother me, all things considered.
What did disturb me, though, was a number of other things.
For one, the corpse just being there was a problem. They weren’t stopping, and they were getting far too close to home.
Its eyes were still open, for another thing, and nearly colorless, and looking at me specifically, and I can swear to you that had not happened when I first laid eyes on it. Even worse, like me, the man lying dead in front of me appeared to be wearing a few bandages like I was, perhaps just recovering from an injury.
And for yet another thing, and perhaps the worst part of this, was the connection I felt with this dead man. Something about the state he was in struck a familiar chord that only I and a select unlucky others knew. As if we were kindred spirits–undergoing the same fate, yet with (probably) different outcomes.
I had been at this–whatever you would call tracking down cults as someone with zero prior detective experience with the help of almost no one–for…a few months now? And I’ve made a bit less progress than would be expected from someone who has seen just about everything the darker sides of magic had to offer. I did have one solid lead, though, and hopefully one that would lead me to exactly who I was looking for.
“Everyone move,” I ordered, pushing my way through the crowd.
Ignoring their complaints, I made my way over toward the body and began to examine it, hoping for any hint of who had done this, and more importantly, if it was exactly who I had suspected. There didn’t appear to be much damage, but what first caught my attention was the note tucked into the man’s pocket. I took it out and unfolded it, and immediately flinched.
Demon tongue.
Hellish whispers ran through my head, and I wasn’t sure if they were just in my head or not. It was hard to tell these days.
I honed in on the note, written on some old paper as if torn from an ancient book. The more I stared, the louder the whispers got. I ignored the throbbing in my head as best as I could–humans were not mentally equipped to engage with the infernal language at all, and I much less so. My hands shook as I read the brief message, which I must have read dozens and dozens of times already; I wasn’t counting and didn’t care to.
Some people studied demon tongue despite…well…everything, even the illegality. It probably didn’t matter to them. It didn’t matter to me, either, but someone had spoken to me in demon tongue before–though, in their defense, likely not out of their own volition–and the trembling and rapid heart rate was not worth the ability to communicate with infernals. (Nothing was, honestly.)
For these reasons–and also not wanting to be arrested or have my mage license revoked–I personally didn’t speak or write demon tongue, but I at least knew a little bit and could recognize some of the infernal runes. And those runes were enough for me to know that this was the exact same message that the abyss had been trying to send me in my last moments.
Can’t run home, I thought. They’ll follow me.
Just gotta run until I find a phone booth.
I ran until I finally spotted one on the street corner near a bridge. I let out a sigh of relief, taking a quick moment to catch my breath. Then, I quickly crossed the street and ran toward the phone booth, quickly dialing the police station.
“Hello?” I said into the phone as quietly as I could manage. “My name is [……………………………] I’m at the corner of Coral Avenue by the Armada IV Memorial Bridge. I’m being pursued by a group of kids in demon-charmed cloaks and shawls, please I need your help they have knives and they’re trying to kill me-“
The tears stinging at the edge of my eyes began to overflow as a human voice at the end of the line responded in perfect, uncharacteristically calm demon tongue. It was a short sentence, repeated over and over again, but with the little knowledge I *did* have, I could translate it by about the sixth loop:
“You are going to hell.”
I hung up the phone immediately, resisting the urge to yell, “I KNOW” directly into the phone.
Humans can’t speak demon tongue here. It’s illegal.
So how did an officer know demon tongue?
Unsurprisingly, the body was still in semi-good condition. After all, little damage was done to the body—only the soul. The only physical marks I could make out were marks around the wrist and neck, likely to restrain the victim. Couple of bruises here and there, too, but nothing was broken.
This…disturbed me, to say the least.
Cults around here were usually known to be violent. After all, a lot of them stood for violent causes–executing the ‘impure,’ plunging everyone into the dreams of a volatile eldritch creature, usurping the throne and forcing everyone to convert, rallying the youth to their bloody cause with claims that they alone possessed special powers…I had heard it all, all of them violent to some degree. But the ones that had gotten me…they seemed to worship oblivion itself. Or maybe whatever was in it. That was beyond even my knowledge.
But…even then, they still had arguably the least violent cause. The deadliest, yes–they seemed to just be destroying souls–but strangely not as bloody. Yet their means of carrying out this objective has historically been, well, bloody.
Or maybe that was just me.
Either way, this victim had certainly not gotten the worst of it. There were no twisted limbs, no bloodied nose, no wounds from blade or bullet, basically no magic-driven attacks aside from the terminating consumption of the soul…only marks of the initial restraint, bruises from the subduing, and the abyss claiming and destroying the soul.
I could almost picture it in my head: they likely jumped him in the middle of the street, kicking him around a bit to possibly weaken him, throw him off balance, but not too much as to rouse resistance, then restraining him–to the floor? A wall? I couldn’t tell, but there were no rope burns so they must have done this by hand–and calling, somehow, for their god, for lack of a better word, to devour its newest victim’s soul.
What did he see as he died? Did their eyes turn as colorless as his would become? Had they shown any sign of enjoying his torment? I doubt it; it didn’t seem like a very ‘fun’ kill. And likely not as personal as it was for me.
They were getting much better at their kills. It probably wasn’t as fun, but more precise.
And a lot less violent than I had gotten.
I caught a glimpse of the charm from earlier out of the corner of my eye, but just as I looked it vanished. Just then a cold breeze hit me as the door behind me opened, and I was yanked out onto the street, leaving the phone dangling by the cord. The book dropped from my hands.
The four delinquents appeared in front of me from nowhere, likely having turned off their Moonlight Shroud charms.
“Gotcha,” Ransley said, smiling as he picked up the book.
“Give it BACK!” I roared, lunging for him. Ransley hit me hard across the face with the book, sending me flying a few feet back onto the brick road. Quickly I realized that my safety was not worth keeping that book. I didn’t know where or how Ransley learned to hit that hard but I wasn’t going to stick around to find out. As he and the others examined the book, I began to scurry away as Ransley gave an order to the others:
“Get him.”
An instant later, I heard something click far behind me, and a sharp pain ripped through my knee. I collapsed to the floor, letting out an agonized cry. I examined my knee, and saw a hole much bigger than a bullet hole should be. I looked up at my attackers.
A gun?!
“What the HELL?!” I shouted. “You’ve already got what you want! LEAVE ME ALO-“
Ardent appeared behind me and punched me square in the face. I held my probably-broken nose as a muffled shriek of pain escaped me. Each of them vanished and took turns raining blows and slashes on me as I tried to step back and run. They gave me almost no chance to react. My body ached everywhere; the knife wounds, though shallow, stung just as bad, if not worse, as any bee. I could barely stand. I used my remaining strength to try and push them off of me whenever I felt them, but I stumbled each time I did, giving them room to knock me around further. Finally I collapsed, and Ardent grabbed my shirt and dragged me to the bridge.
“W-wait-“ I cried, still wincing and crying from my bruises and decayed knee. “STOP IT!-”
I examined the bandages on my hand and knee. The ones from that night must’ve been amateurs, or at least new to the cult’s way of doing things.
Focus, Shroud.
The victim’s eyes were still open, and almost completely empty.
Almost.
The body must not be entirely empty, then. This wasn’t exactly a kill—whoever this person was, they would not be dead for much longer, or at least depending on your definition of ‘dead.’
How long ago had this attack been, then? I touched the skin—still warm-ish. This had to be recent.
By that logic, if this was meant not as a lethal attack, but as one of induction into their group…
I wasn’t sure how long I had been out, but I at least knew it wasn’t for very long.
So…I didn’t have much longer, then.
I instinctively jerked away from the body. Would he come back? He wouldn’t be under anyone’s control, at least for the first few minutes–how long does it take to kill someone? Would it be long enough for him to kill me?–no, he probably wouldn’t go after me; I had barely any soul left for him to long for…unless he’s just that desperate enough to take scraps from a near-husk.
What would he do when he came back? Would he wander around, lost, confused, until they welcomed him with false promises of salvation and freedom from the ‘burden’ of having a judgement-tied soul? Would he be violent, as they had been to him?
Then again…I came back after one of their attacks, but with a will of my own. Did they want me to come back? Why would they want me of all people to come back?
“You know how much trouble you caused us, […….…]?!” Ransley shouted as he kicked me in my injured leg. “Don’t act like you didn’t have this coming, you little weasel.”
“I didn’t-“ I tried to say.
Ransley propped me up on the sidewalk, just by the edge of the bridge, right above the river. He placed his hand on my bruised shoulder, looking at me with a bone-chilling grin.
Again, I got a good look at his eyes. This time, everything except the pupils was entirely white. As I looked I almost felt like I was staring at something beyond; further, even. But the harder I looked the more I could see how much nothing there was. And yet, in spite of that, this nothing seemed to be staring back at me.
The others had the same white eyes too, looking on with a horrible satisfaction.
“What…” I barely managed to say, “…what are y-you…?”
“Free,” Ransley answered, without his usual cruelty and instead with an uncharacteristically sanctimonious tone. “And with our help, so too will you be free.”
With a hard shove, I was pushed off the bridge.
I grabbed onto the edge with my hand, barely having the strength to pull myself up.
“T-this is insane-!” I cried. “Ransley! Please! Y-you can keep the book; I won’t call the police, just help me up-“
Ransley frowned and put his boot on my hand. He leaned in as he brought his foot down harder, crushing my hand. Bone splintered and crumbled under the weight of the shoe, and I let out a shriek as a cold look crossed his face.
“You really should stop holding on so much,” he said. “That’s your problem. That’s why you’re here. Just let go, and face oblivion.”
Ransley took his foot off finally, but my hand had run out of strength. I slipped, and fell into the river.
Either way, I had to work fast.
“Hey, kid!” Someone from the crowd called. “What’re you doing? Leave this to the professionals.”
I turned around, and maybe it was the speed at which I had whirled around to face them, or he did just flinch.
Was it my eyes?
“The police won’t find them,” I explained. “I know what I’m doing. I’ve studied demonology for a few years.”
I went back to the body.
“You mean you know who did this?” he asked.
“Maybe,” I answered. “I just wanna be sure…”
I pressed down on the bruises on their shoulder and arms. Hollow. I felt no bone or extra layer of skin or muscle underneath.
Just as I suspected, I thought. Soul devouring.
My only question now was, how much of the soul was left?
—-
The bridge wasn’t particularly tall; just enough for any small cargo ships to run under. But the fall felt much longer than it had any right to.
I never hit the water. I was swallowed by something but it certainly wasn’t the river. It was as cold and sharp but nothing wet ever touched my skin or clothes.
I did not fall into water. I fell into something foreign, something dark, something alive, something evil.
Its eyes were beady and attentive, focused, eager, and it had long rows of sharp fangs. It appeared to smile at me, expecting me, welcoming me. Whispers in demon-tongue surrounded me, and I overwhelmed myself trying to find a single word I could understand. The only thing I could catch was “going to hell” again…was this it? Was this hell? What circle was this?
I was immobile, unable to look away from the creature in front of me, unable to scream as it opened its fang-filled mouth. I couldn’t even let out a scream of protest; no, not against this, as it brought down its jaws and took a large bite out of a deep part of me even I could never access. The pain from my bruises and wounds no longer burned; only ached, as if the pain had been there forever.
I was hollow. If there was anything left, I barely even felt it. My wounds glowed a hot white color and became shallow. I felt nothing but an aching nigh-emptiness that seemed to have no origin I could place; no past; only a present and a long future.
I didn’t know how long I was in that void. But as much as I despised that thing for robbing me of my life, I was grateful that it chose to let me go.
—-

I took out my pen from my pocket and a couple of mini-candles from my satchel. I flicked a lighter and lit the candles, surrounding them at different points around the body. I began to draw an evocation circle around the body. I’m not sure what had stopped this cult from performing forced evocations as opposed to beating everyone into submission until they blacked out enough to face the abyss and have their soul devoured, but I wasn’t about to find any sense in a group of people who literally worship the abyss.
I took my time with the intricate webs of the circle, carefully connecting whatever remained of the soul to the points where I would draw in the runes, and connected those to the candles.
I then drew in symbols in the language of the spirits at the different sub-points that would draw up souls from the afterlife, adding a desperate prayer in each pen stroke that I evoke the right thing and not something unwelcome. I had to steady my hand as I did this, reminding myself that this was merely a human soul who was recently killed, so the chances of him having ended up in hell – was he that kind of person? – were slim; they had to be, of course they were; there was no need to panic so stop panicking. Yet knowing I was drawing the same symbols, the same webs, lighting the same candles as the deadly evokers around town who would break into people’s houses and draw evocation circles under their beds to call up who-knows-what from the pits of hell to torment the living…to think I was drawing the same circle that I checked for every night when I went to sleep…
The pen snapped in my shaking hand against the concrete, getting ink all over my hand. I swore, and rubbed some on my finger tip so I could start to finish the circle.
“What the hell are you doing, kid?!” someone cried, making me jump. “You’re tampering with evidence! That’s illegal!”
“You’re gonna screw up the investigation!” someone else shouted.
I steadied myself from being startled.
“This…this is the investigation,” I replied bluntly.
“Wh–okay…? Are you a detective or something?” the first guy asked.
I shrugged.
“I think so,” I said.
“You think-”
I could hear further shouts from the crowd as I turned the body over to draw the rest of the circle underneath, but I held up my hand to stop them from getting closer.
“Just let me work!” I cried without looking back.
That’s when I noticed some of the rapidly-decaying skin near the shoulder and side of the ankles. The skin had withered and given way to bone, the effect cutting through flesh and muscle. Even the bone had begun to decay.
Well, so much for minimal damage.
I unzipped the victim’s jacket and pulled back the shirt just slightly to get a better look at the damage. The withering had spread further—the entire shoulder seemed about ready to decay. I took a camera out of my bag and took a picture of the decaying wounds.
With the remaining ink, I drew another sigil on the bandage of my injured hand, a heart-shaped eye-like symbol with two lines running up my index and middle finger. It was a painful process and I was just careful enough to have the pen not tear through the bandage, and I placed my shaking hand on the decaying shoulder and closed my eyes. I saw all of the injuries on the man’s body, including where he had been injured–he had a broken arm that had almost finished recovering, and a fractured foot that was also healing, but wasn’t as near completion as his arms. Either way, both of these had stopped healing, and had actually gotten worse, with the bones beginning to decay in both areas.
What was the point of beating people up, breaking them, letting them decay, and then expecting them to join you after you had broken them? My attackers probably went through the same thing as this man had–as I had, if this cult was larger than them. So why do the same thing to others?
But that was just it, though, wasn’t it?
They knew what it was like to be soulless, and only they knew not only how to recover from the injuries suffered, but how to disguise themselves as living to avoid trouble with the law.
I looked again at the bandages on my hand, and unraveled it slightly, careful not to let the crowd see. There, too, did my flesh begin to decay. This was the primary issue with not having a soul: without the very essence that gives us life, our bodies aren’t capable of self-healing anymore. Any injuries are permanent unless fixed by a doctor, or if we tend our own wounds.
Fortunately my bones—at least in my hand—hadn’t completely withered away. I managed to revive just in time, fortunately.
Just in time.
——
I don’t remember much about the day I woke up. Just the excruciating, aching pain.
What I did know was I had washed up on the shore of the city, and I couldn’t stand up for a very long time. A burning sensation enveloped my entire hand and knee, and I felt a throbbing sensation in both areas. The bruises from the beatdown stuck on me like a leech, but most vividly, my chest felt hollow. And it hurt. The emptiness gnawed at the inside of my chest, and it, too, burned and ached. Like a stomach ache in the wrong place.
With my good hand I crawled my way off of the shore until I found a lamppost. I grabbed onto it, and propped up my good knee. I swung my arm toward the lamppost, grabbing onto it with my bad hand, shocks of pain running through my body. I tried to haul myself up, but the weight of my body caved my knee in, and I collapsed. That’s when I got a good look at my hand.
Bits of skin had completely come off, seeming to have withered away. Pieces of bone underneath had chipped off.
I grew nauseous and I felt the blood drain from my face. I let out some inhuman noise that I reckoned was some attempt at a scream but came out as a cross between that and a moan of agony.
How had this happened?
It was a horrible sound, but at least I had been found. Otherwise, who knows what would’ve happened?
Or who else would’ve found me?
——
Finishing the circle grew tricky as my hand trembled, though I was unsure if it was from the injury or from the reality of the process itself.
“Kid, we don’t even know who you are,” the guy from earlier said. “Are you even a licensed detective?”
I ignored him and wiped some of the ink from my pen on my hand, pressing my hands together to activate the circle. As the soul fire candles flared, what little color was left in their eyes drained slowly, and a small, glowing, deteriorated wisp of a soul rose out of the victim’s body.
This was all that was left…
Somehow this dead man was just the same as I, who could still breath, still walk, still talk, still live—but only just.
What had this man’s soul seen before it was decimated? If, in fact, the same people who killed me are responsible for this, did he, too, see the same grinning face in the abyss that I had? Was he as afraid as I was? Or did he accept this as death?
I took my mage’s license out of my pocket and showed it to the crowd.
“I’m a licensed magic user,” I said, “is that enough?”
“…that’s not a detective license,” the same guy said. “I’m calling the police.”
“Great!” I said. “Tell them the Brotherhood of Abyss Walkers did this.” At this point it was all but confirmed.
“The…what?”
“The cult that keeps tormenting this forsaken town,” I explained. “The one behind all the unexplained murders.”
The guy—along with the rest of the crowd—stifled a laugh. Some of them couldn’t hold it in.
“There’s no cult in New Lumanore,” someone else said. “Our security’s airtight; no way they would’ve been able to form a guild without a license.”
“Just call the authorities, Aaron,” a lady in the crowd said. “This kid isn’t worth persuading.”
“W-wait-“ I said before letting out a resigned sigh. I packed up the candles and pocketed my pen, and took off. I knew who the culprit was. What the police had to say didn’t bother me.
They’ll believe me when I put the culprit behind bars.
—————
In previous investigations I managed to pin down the general area where the Abyss Walkers operate. Prior murders took place at least within a mile’s range of Eclipse Avenue, an area further south of New Lumanore. It was a relatively quiet and empty area; there were quite a bit of shops and buildings of unknown function that no one ever seemed to go into, not even during the day.
The entire place screamed occult activity.
Sure enough, just as I hit the corner of the avenue I caught a glimpse of a Moonlight Shroud charm, pinned to the outwear of a hooded figure. They were walking along the other side of the street, hanging close to the bare wall of a wide building.
Once they were some distance along I crossed the street quickly and began tailing them.
Confrontation wasn’t new to me, just…unfavorable. Is that why I trembled? Either way I knew the procedure: Walk with the same beat. Same path, same pattern of step. Stop when he stops. Walk like this until the shadow is close enough for contact.
Once I did I took out a capsule from my coat. It contained shadow ink, allowing me to either create my own shadow, or to hide within someone else’s. I didn’t have enough of a soul to perform any magical feats on my own–whatever I could do would probably just come out as sparks–so this was the best I could work with. Unfortunately the capsule was nearly empty, and I made a mental note to contact my supplier after I was finished. In the meantime, I used what was left to lather my hand in ink as I silently crept behind the lone cultist, and pressed my hand against his shadow. I latched on and eventually got pulled in. Inside the shadow realm, I had a black-and-white view of the street from inside the wall. I couldn’t breathe, though, and I couldn’t hold my breath for very long so I knew I had to jump him sooner rather than later.
I took a coin out of my pocket and tossed it outside behind the cultist. He stopped and turned around, as expected, and I took the moment to lunge out and grab him by the throat.
—————
The cultist narrowed his eyes, and an amused smirk came on his face.
“Hey…” he said. “I know you.”
I flinched. How?
He kicked me off and stood up.
“You…you’re the kid we got that book from!” He chuckled. “You don’t quit, do you? This is really what you chose to do after death? Vigilante work?”
I felt the blood drained from my face.
“…what are you talking about?” I lied. “What book?”
“The demonology book, stupid,” he said. “The thing damning you to begin with. You forgot already? Or did you lose your memories alongside almost all your soul somehow?”
I clenched my fist, resisting the urge to charge at him again. I couldn’t take him in a head-on fight. I was too weak for that.
“Tell me,” he said. “How’s it feel? Being so close to freedom, so close to ridding yourself of that moral creed weighing you down…no fear of rapture…just your life and your…well, I suppose now broken…body, and your heart and mind.”
“Shut up,” I snapped.
“Good thing you came back, though. We’ve been slacking on our initiations recently…Ardent went a little too hard on too many people. We’re behind on our quota.”
“Wait a sec…” I took a step back. “What do you mean ‘too hard?’ Aren’t they supposed to come back?”
“The idiot decided to use magic to slow the initiates down,” the cultist explained. “As if that wouldn’t damage the soul at all. I’m sure you of all people know. You’ve taken enough beatings form him, right, D–“
I punched him in the face. The second I made contact I realized I had used my bad hand without thinking. Bone snapped, collapsed, and even shifted through the hole in my hand. I let out a far-too-loud shriek of agony as I recoiled and caressed my hand, trying to relocate the bone.
The cultist looked at me and laughed, and I raised a finger on my good hand and threatened him:
“Don’t try that again,” I said. “I’ve still got one—ahh…—perfectly functioning hand.”
“Fine by me,” he replied. “You hit hard for a dead person…”
My hand still ached from the punch. I imagine it probably hurt me way more than it hurt him.
“Do you mean to turn me in, Shroud?” the cultist hissed. “Just try it. I know who you are. They’ll find out you’re undead and investigate you to hell and back. Whatever decimal of a soul you have left won’t save you. Not even close.”
“I can’t trust you with that information even if I let you go,” I said. “But even if you do…I’ll know sooner or later if you’ve said something. You best not try it if you don’t wanna die twice.”
The cultist grinned.
“I’m shaking,” he said, deadpan. “I’ll just come back again.”
“What, are there no revival limits in your little group?”
“Nope. He’ll bring us back again and again as long as he needs us.”
“That sounds terrible.”
“Oh, you’ve only been resurrected once, you big baby,” the cultist said. “You’ll get used to it.”
“I’m not joining you.”
“You have no reason not to,” the cultist said. “We can fix your broken body; make you look and seem as alive as the next person. Those remnants of a soul may not matter to the police, who’ll mark you as soulless anyway, but you know who it does matter to?” He pointed at the sky and at the group. “Them. Someone like you, who’s spent hours learning about heaven’s enemies…you think you have any chance of reaching heaven? HA!”
I fell silent. Just when I thought being registered as ‘dead’ to everyone you know meant they wouldn’t bother you about being a (rookie) demonologist anymore. That reminder worked my last nerve, yet every time it was brought up I could never muster up a proper defense.
“…I’m aware,” I mumbled.
“Besides, I’m sure you’re just livid at the police, who never caught who got you. I’m sure you’d like your vengeance against them for failing you…we can help you out with that, if you’d like. After all, why should we fear death, or judgement, from this life or the next? Like I’ve said, we’ve got no soul to weigh us down to heaven or hell. No death, no judgment. Just you, whatever you wanna do, and a welcoming oblivion who’ll spit you back out as many times as needed. As long as you keep it fed, that is.”
“It doesn’t matter if the police know or if they don’t know,” I said. “I know. And I’ll know more than they ever will. Besides, why the hell would I trust you to give me closure about my death–the death YOU caused?!”
The cultist frowned.
“And that’s just the trouble, isn’t it…you’re just about soulless, and the only soulless person New Lumanore who isn’t with us and…for what? You lose nothing by joining us!”
“First of all,” I shouted. “I am not soulless. Your stupid demon didn’t take all of it.”
“Yeah. Still not sure why that happened,” the cultist replied, “but who am I to question the great abyss–”
“Oh, shut up. And second of all–just in case you forgot–YOU KILLED ME! I don’t owe you loyalty, or gratitude, or mercy…I owe you nothing.”
“You may be upset now,” the cultist said, “but you’ll learn to thank us later.”
“I will not.”
His frown turned into a scowl. He took out a small cylinder from his pocket.
“I was gonna use this the day of the attack,” he said, “but I didn’t see any point. Seemed like the others were doing just fine without the staff.”
Sure enough, the cylinder popped open into a metal bo-staff. He walked towards me, twirling it through his fingers.
“You’ve been chasing the wrong thing, Shroud,” he said. “You think you need vengeance, but what you really need is security. We all know what being soulless is like. You’re weaker, you can’t heal your wounds, you can’t do magic, and it’s pretty obvious when you’ve just come back from the dead. I don’t care what three-percent of a soul you do have; it’s nowhere near enough for you to enjoy all the privileges of being fully human. Face it. You’re basically the same as us.”
As I stepped back, he stopped spinning the staff and instead gripped it with both hands.
“So you can either let go of those remnants you have the audacity to still call a soul, then come with us and let us give you the safety you so desperately need,” he said, rearing the staff back, “…or we’ll just break you further and let oblivion do what it wishes with your remains.”
He started to bring the staff down.
“WAIT!” I yelled, bringing my hands to my face.
Surprisingly enough, he actually froze, the staff a couple inches from my face.
“Okay…I get it…” I said. “You’re right. I won’t turn you in. Just…promise me you won’t tell anyone who I am.”
“What’s stopping me?” the cultist asked, cocking his head slightly and raising an eyebrow.
“Look. I didn’t turn you in,” I said. “You owe me.”
“No I don’t. I’m not tied to anything but oblivion.”
I let out an annoyed huff.
“Like I said. I’ll know if you exposed me,” I reminded him. “I don’t care if that scares you or not, just…let me go.”
“Let YOU go?! You jumped ME!”
“And I had—I…thought…I had the right to. Look…I’m backing down. You go about your night. I go about mine. We don’t speak of this.”
The cultist hesitated, then put the staff away.
“Fine,” he said. “But we’ll still come back for you. Whether or not your initiation goes smoothly is entirely on you.”
With that, he pulled out the same charm he had on the day of the attack, and vanished.
“See you around,” he said.
That was the last I heard of him that night.
Once I thought I was safe, I let out a loud groan of annoyance.
I had him. He was literally a few feet away. If I *just* had more shadow ink that would’ve been it for him.
But…he was right. I was at every possible disadvantage. And I couldn’t work like that. I shouldn’t have jumped him. I should’ve just taken note of his appearance and went from there. That was foolish on my part.
But…I did have his appearance now.
But he had my identity.
I still wasn’t at a complete advantage. And I couldn’t work like that. I had to lay low, and rebuild. My hand was wounded and I was lucky I didn’t get my skull bashed in. There was no way I could have recovered from that. But I wouldn’t give up. I had a lead and I wasn’t letting go of it.
I didn’t care about their ‘freedom’ or ‘not being tied down’ or anything like that. Fact of the matter is, they were hurting people, and their demon lord had more control over them than they’d realize.
They were beyond redemption. The demon didn’t bind them through any soul manipulation or contract–it was some weird combination of free will, gratitude, and the threat of permanent death.
These cultists had to go, and quickly. They had to pay, and dearly.
I know I’m weak, but once I’m back up and running I would do as much damage from the shadows as humanly possible.
They weren’t bound by any rules, so why should I have to be?
I didn’t care how many times I would get hurt. They ruined my life, and I was going to pay them back tenfold.

Summary: (Y/N) and Jax have been trying for a baby ever since they were married, but each time she takes a test, it's bad news. Jax doesn't realise how much pressure he is putting on her, until she finally breaks.
Characters: Jax Teller x Reader
Meanings: (Y/N)=Your name
Warnings: Unable to get pregnant, mention of sex, swearing, lots of fluff
                                    *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
I paced around the small bathroom, ringing my hands together as I waited for the agonisingly slow two minutes to pass. Every time I did this, I got my hopes up, despite being disappointed time and time again. The alarm on my phone startled me, but I let it ring out for a few more seconds before switching it off. Taking a deep breath, I noticed how shaky my hand was as I picked up the pregnancy test, closing my eyes as I counted down in my head. 3, 2, 1...
Negative
Not pregnant
After so many tries, you would think the tears would be dried up, that I could shed no more. But it was the absolute opposite. The pain, the disappointment, it was too much now. Like most people, I just wanted to start a family. There were no more dreams of being a millionaire or becoming famous, or even marrying a celebrity; I had Jax, and all we wanted together was a baby. We had tried so many times, worked out when best to try and get me pregnant, patiently waited for months and months on end. It seemed nothing was working anymore.
“Babe?” Jax’s voice called out in the house.
Sighing to myself, I picked up the test, not bothering to even act happy as I made my way to him. Standing in the doorway of the kitchen, I saw him looking through the fridge before he noticed me. His smile disappeared when he saw my expression, instantly asking me what was wrong. I carelessly threw the test onto the kitchen table, watching as it slid across. Sensing that something was wrong, he didn’t get excited, slowly looking at it.
“Let’s face it Jax, someone up there doesn’t want us having kids.” I mumbled, looking through the cupboards for a wine glass.
“Don’t say that.”
I looked over my shoulder after pouring myself a drink.“Am I wrong?”
“It’s normal for it to take time.”
“Not this long. And I’m sick of going through the same thing over and over! Sex seems like a chore, it’s not spontaneous.”
He smirked, thinking it was the right time to joke around.“We can change that.”
I scoffed.“For fucks sake Jax, I’m not in the mood for that.”
“I didn’t mean it that way.” he slowly approached me, unintentionally trapping me between him and the counter.
“I know, I’m sorry. I just...” putting down the wine glass, I covered my face with both hands, feeling more tears emerging.“I just want this so badly. We’ve tried everything. Why isn’t it working?!”
“Hey, hey,” his voice was hushed as he pulled me into his chest, wrapping his arms around me,“it will happen. We can’t give up. How often have we spoken about this?”
“Forever.”
“We always talk about having a kid! And it will happen, I promise you.”
“You can’t promise that Jax.”
“Well, I’m going to anyway. I can’t stand seeing my girl like this.”
Pulling away to wipe the tears off my cheeks, I tried to calm down, knowing that standing here upset would get us no where.”Do you really think it’s ever going to happen for us?”
He held my chin in his fingers, tilting it up to look at him.“It will. But it’s a shame you think fucking ain’t fun no more.”
Jax walked away, and I knew what game he was playing.
“Well...I mean, just casual fucking isn’t that bad I suppose.” I admitted.
He stopped, looking over his shoulder at me.“That’s a relief.”
“Yeah?” I smiled.
“Yeah, cause, I was gonna take a shower but...”
“Need help old man?”
“I’m gonna need help with something if you don’t get your ass in there soon enough.”
I immediately took back my statement on sex being a chore after that. It felt more wild, yet still loving. Of course we didn’t just leave it in the shower, it continued for most of the night. Pent up anger that was subconsciously stored away in the back of our minds were being released making it all the more exciting. Jax left early the next morning, heading out to the club, but kissed me before he left. I wasn’t fully awake, but acknowledged him with a lazy smile before sleeping for the rest of the morning.
Heading out later for groceries, I checked over my list once more, seeing that I needed to buy more supplies for the first aid kit at home; it wasn’t a surprise that we needed more items again, especially when you were the wife of a President to a motor cycle club that dealt with many illegal doings. As I picked up what I needed, my eyes scanned over the pregnancy tests, sadness waving over me again. It was like they were tormenting me. Pulling myself away from the aisle, I tried to forget about it, focusing on anything else but that.
Jax was already home when I returned, lounging on the sofa as I walked by. He got up as we greeted one another, helping me unpack the shopping.
“Hey,” I said before he kissed me,“how was your day?”
“Same old. Everything is pretty quiet at the club at the moment.” he explained.
“That’s good.”
“Yeah, nice to take a break from...well, that stuff.”
“Nice to see you home so relaxed too.”
We finished unpacking everything when I noticed another bag. However, it was from a different store.
“Jax, did you buy something today?” I asked as I looked inside.
“Yeah,” he waited until I pulled the item out,“it’s more pregnancy tests.”
I frowned at him as I held it up to him.“Why would you go out and get this?”
“Because we didn’t have any left, and I thought after last night, might be worth seeing if it did anything.”
I threw it onto the counter, stomping away towards the bedroom.
“What’s the attitude for?” he called after me.
“I’m not a science experiment Jax! I don’t have to take a test every day if I don’t want to.”
“But what if you’re pregnant?”
“Then taking a day off from tests won’t change that.” I sat on the edge of the bed, glaring at him as he walked in.
“Don’t you want to know?”
“No! Not anymore Jax! I want to just eave the tests for a while.”
“We just spoke about wanting a baby-”
“Do you know how stressed this makes me feel? It’s like this is my only purpose and I’m failing!”
“It’s not your ‘only purpose’. Why are you suddenly acting like this?"
"You know what, I'm not suddenly upset or stressed about all of this. I've felt like this ever since our first negative test."
"Ad you've just been hiding this from me? Thought we were supposed to talk about this kinda shit like normal married couples."
"We're far from fucking normal." I leaned my elbows on my knees, cradling my face in my hands.
"Exactly. You know how tight this family is, it's us and the club." he quickly approached me, kneeling on the floor and grabbing my wrists to reveal my face."You know that family comes first. You are my family."
"It's just every time we have sex, you shove a test in my hand." I sobbed."Like last night, I thought we actually had a great night, then you come home with multiple tests."
"I just want to make sure-"
I groaned before raising my voice at him."You're not listening!"
Having had enough of the pointless argument, I shoved him away from me, grabbing a pair of shoes and quickly putting them on.
"What are you doing?"
"I want to be alone. I need to have some fresh air."
"Let me go with you, please."
I shook my head as I put on a jacket."No Jax, I don't think that's a good idea."
He ignored me, following behind as I rushed to the front door. Why was this man so stubborn? Stopping before I even turned the handle, I spoke to him without even turning around.
"Jax, please, I just need a moment to be by myself."
"You've been by yourself all day-"
"You know that's not the same as this."
"Fine, go away then. You know what, don't even bother to call or text if you're alright."
I was about to retaliate, but I would be stuck here all night arguing with him. I was only heading around the block, I didn't want to be out before it got dark. It was only a little cooler outside, but it was still a relief, as was the peaceful silence. My pace was slow, trying to concentrate on my surroundings to distract my previous thoughts. Although it had worked at first, it was interrupted by the rumbling of a motorcycle. Rolling my eyes as Jax pulled up beside me, I carried on walking.
"Babe, would you get on the bike?" he asked over the noise.
I said nothing.
"Oh please not the silent treatment. You know I can't stand that shit. I just want to hear your beautiful voice."
"Do you not understand the meaning of being alone?"
"(Y/N), come for a ride. I know you like them as much as I do when I need to clear my head."
He wasn't wrong there.
"I brought you a helmet. Come on, please?"
We both halted, and I hesitantly faced him. He was holding out the helmet, a small smile on his face. Why was it so fucking hard to resist him? I gave in, smiling back as I put on the helmet and climbed on the bike behind him. As soon as my arms were wrapped firmly around his waist, he set off, revving the engine more than he needed to, causing me to laugh.
Jax wasn't wrong. This feeling could not be beaten. I had never been on a motorbike before I met Jax. Like most people I was apprehensive to ride with him at first, but after that first trip, I was hooked. But it didn't make me want one of my own, it had to be with Jax. Being on this thing together was exhilarating, it always took me back to the first time, where he had been so cocky and confident as he flirted with me. Lost in my thoughts, I didn’t notice where we were driving to until he started to slow down.
“Really Jax?” I giggled as we pulled up across the street from the grocery store.
“What?”
I climbed off the bike, shaking my hair as I took off the helmet.“You know I already went grocery shopping today.” I joked, knowing why we were really here.
“Come on, you can’t forget the first time you laid eyes on this.” he gestured to himself, leaning back on his bike.
“Of course I know why we’re here. You trying to earn some brownie points?”
“Kinda.”
I waited for him to continue.
“Just...it just felt right to come here. I don’t know, maybe cause I wanted to reflect on how it used to be.”
“What do you mean?”
“When we were still kids. So much shit has happened since then.”
I knew he was referring to the club more than our marriage.“Yeah, it’s been hard.”
“But I couldn’t have done any of that without you.”
“You would have managed fine without me.”
“No,” he grabbed my hand,“I wouldn’t have.”
“Jax, you don’t have to butter me up you know.” I raised my other hand to cup his cheek, tenderly stroking my thumb back and forth.“I mean, I am still upset, but I couldn’t be mad at you forever.”
“You have every right to be. You would think as someone who is under stress almost all of the time, I would stop you from feeling the same. And I’ve been a shit husband.”
“No, Jax-”
“I have though. I thought back about what you said. You were right about everything. I come back from the club, we speak, eat dinner, and most nights we are fucking. I’m not making love to you anymore because I’m immediately expecting a result after, I’m not thinking about us in that moment.”
I sighed.“The other night felt a bit...different from how we’ve been doing it recently.”
“I still stormed in today with those tests.”
“Jax,” I placed both hands on his shoulders, standing in between his legs,“we’re just going to have to forget about earlier if we’re going to move past this. You seem to be understanding better, and I’m thankful that you thought about it. I know we both really want this, but why don’t we leave it for a bit? And I don’t mean go back to using protection, because you never know, but if we’re having sex, I just want it to be for us two, not to create something.”
He nodded, pulling me in closer and slowly kissing me.“I’m sorry. I promise I won’t put any pressure on you again.”
I smiled.“Come on, let’s go home.”

Motion Sickness Chapter 85
pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq
"What can you give me about Hill and her huntresses?" Ironwood asked me as we walked briskly up to his office.
"Fiona has some sort of matter absorption semblance. Evidently she can put a plane in her pocket and walk away. It's Striker ranged and probably limited to non-living things, I'm speculating on that bit. Still, it's supposed to be fairly wicked. May has the invisibility field. It's got a decent radius and it's mobile. It fucked with one of my own operations once. Sabotaged me. Then there's Joanna. She's got super strength, classic Brute," I informed him. "You want me here for this? I've had a run one with them before."
"You'll be with me," he affirmed. He swung the doors open to his office and he sat down at his desk.
I took to a corner by the window. I folded my arms. My sword hilt extended over my head.
"Their weapons?" Ironwood asked me.
"These crossbow staves. Probably modifiable with dust rounds. Except Hill. She's got a crossbow with blades on either side. My man described it as like a fan or an accordian."
"Your man?"
"A union leader down in Mantle. That's how he worked with Hill. You want the details?"
He shook his head. He steepled his hands before him and we waited. Penny came skipping into the room. She saw me, smiled, and waved at me. I grinned back at her and nodded.
"Oh are we acting brooding? I'll do my best." She imitated me by the far side of the long window.
"I don't need to act. I am brooding," I laughed back. "But yeah. A little."
"Hill should be up any minute."
"Good. I was getting tired of looking relaxed."
"I'm glad you two get along," Ironwood mumbled. "It bodes well. For you in particular, Strife."
"Eh, it's mostly Ruby." I kicked my foot around, rolling out my left ankle.
"Don't say that. I thought we were friends."
"We are, Penny. I'm trying to brood, though."
"I see…"
Hill pushed her way into the room with a small smile. She took me and Penny in. She had Fiona with her and another woman I recognized as Joanna Greenleaf from a photo.
Fiona nudged Hill. "That's him. Cloud Strife. The killer mercenary."
Hill glanced at me. "I've heard a bit about you, done some nasty business in my town. What? You working for Ironwood now?"
"For the foreseeable future. Judge ordered. You could probably find out about it. Given your seat," Ironwood returned from behind his steepled fingers.
"You give up the merc life?" She asked. Her question directed at me.
"For now," I answered.
"You're a dangerous man, Strife, I'd be glad to hear you're playing for the good guys. If that's what's going on here."
"It sort of is. You fucked with my operation. Don't think I don't know."
"I did nothing illegal. Nothing anybody could prove at any rate." She showed her teeth. I liked her. "Not like you and Taurus."
"You heard anything about him?" I wondered. "I have a blood score to settle with the bastard."
"Not a peep. He's been laying low. Like I thought you and your illusionist were. Color me surprised to find you standing beside the General. Right beside the protector of Mantle after the shit you pulled."
Maybe this was why Ironwood wanted me here. To divert her focus. I doubted he wanted me for moral support. He wanted me on as a distraction. So I'd be as distracting as possible.
"Those charges were dropped," Penny said.
"You hear that?" I asked. "It's like I never did it."
"But you did do it," Fiona spat. "You killed people."
"Interesting way you phrased that," Hill said with a hand raised at Fiona beside her.
"I only killed other criminals." I shrugged. "And I got time served with a hefty fine."
"Meaningless to someone like you," Hill countered.
"Not meaningless. Just the best I could have hoped for."
"But are you reformed? Do you serve Atlas and Mantle well?" Robyn wondered.
"To the very best of my ability, I protect the people now."
"Will you swear by it?" Hill held out her hand.
"Sure. I'll promise." I took her hand. Purple flowed over my hand as I took hers and it wreathed both of us.  "What do you want me to say?" I asked. Words could be very particular.
"That you serve as a guardian to the people, now."
"I serve as a guardian to the people now." I echoed. I technically did before too. Her aura flashed green. It must have registered as true because she reclined looking satisfied.
"Now that that's settled we can get down to business. When will the new tower be ready for launch?"
"Classified. You shouldn't even know about the tower," Ironwood returned.
"But I do. And this will go smoother if we work together, General. I can vote in your favor or I can vote against you at every turn. I can even raise a vote of no confidence."
The General grimaced. I think that he hoped I'd buy him more time before the nitty-gritty.
Robyn leaned over his desk and spread her palms on it. Hunching over on him.
"What's it gonna be, General? I can do worse besides. I can petition to have your council seat taken away. How long will your precious tower take to get completed then. Work with me. I just want to talk."
"You want to talk for now."
"That's right," Hill returned. "I might change my mind based on what I hear, too." At least she was open and clear about it. The value of her prizing honesty.
"The launch is two months out." Ironwood stated.
He stood up and towered over Hill with her slumping over the desk. She recoiled back and stretched to her full height. It was still nowhere near the General and closer to me though she was tall for a woman.
"All of our attention has been on raising the tower and restoring communications between the kingdoms."
"Even though Mantle suffers," she murmured.
I thought about saying something like 'Mantle always suffers' but I kept my mouth shut. It wasn't the time. Never let be said I couldn't be diplomatic.
"Some sacrifices have had to be made to get things done but we're in the final stretch now. No going back."
"I want things to get better for Mantle, General. And fast."
"I'm working as fast as I can," Ironwood vowed.
"I want you to slow down the launch of it means things can get better for Mantle. Diverting both supplies and huntsmen."
"That isn't practical."
"Practical be damned. Mantle always bears the lion's share of the suffering for Atlas. All for it's floating neighbor. You want me to not vote against you at every turn so this project gets completed? You're going to have to make concessions. That means voting my way on minimum wage increases and miner safety standards. Even if those safety standards set back your little project."
Ironwood sighed. It sounded like she had him in a corner.
"We are so close." He grunted. He sounded frustrated and exasperated. "So close to getting this project done. For everybody's benefit."
"Well it just got further away. One way or another. Not one more miner will die for this or anything else. They matter to me. What's it gonna be, James?"
"Friends call me James. You can call me Ironwood or General."
"Petty," she clicked her tongue. She had him in a vice though. She'd be petty and slow down the project too. She was a woman of her word. No one with a semblance like that wouldn't be.
"It sounds like I've got little choice. Just know that once my project is complete I won't back down so easily anymore."
"I'm counting on it, General," she turned on a clicking heel and left. Her tour de force departed with her.
"Sorry. I tried but she wasn't going to be distracted. Not by me and not by Penny."
Ironwood groaned. "The launch just got set back a month. Minimum. And if I start capitulating now who knows when it will end."
"She's a woman of her word. So you've got that going for you."
"At least it wasn't Jacque Schnee," Penny chipped in brightly. "This election could have gone much worse. She's willing to work with you if you work with her."
My scroll chirped. I pulled it out of my pocket.
"Strife. Who’s this?"
"Aurum. I've got a hit on your lady friend. She's here. She's threatening me. She demanded my information. She was asking the same sort of questions you were. I need to know what that's about now."
"You don't. I'll be there."
"My life is on the line! She immolated my men!"
"Try and hold her there. I'm coming. Let's get lucky and kill her."
"Sorry Cloud but I have got to do what I got to do to protect my business."
"Just hold her. I'm on my way."
I cut the connection.
"Something important?" Ironwood asked.
"I got a hit on Cinder. She's about to burn one of my contacts to death. I need to get there."
Ironwood nodded. "Do you need reinforcements? I'll call Ace Ops."
"Better call Team RWBY too and put them on standby with Qrow. She's at The Den."
"I'm sending Penny with you."
"Let's go Penny." I said with a nod by the door. "You and I will fly there."
pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq pq
Penny and I swooped down on The Den. "You take her accomplices. Let me worry about Cinder."
"Do you believe that you can defeat her?"
"We're about to find out." Let’s hope that sounded confident.
I bust in the door to find the club empty and quiet. The lack of music and the distant smell of inhalants gave the place a void like feeling. It was strangely empty and lacking.
"Sorry Cloud. It's nothing personal. Just business, you understand." It was Aurum's voice coming from the top floor above me. "She forced me. You get it."
There was the clink of glass heels on the floor above us and Cinder Fall came into view.
"You," she purred. "Jaune Arc was it? I owe you for when last we met." Her one eye glowed like embers.
"It was. Not anymore. It's Cloud now."
"A change in name will mean little to my mistress. You're her son."
"Hardly. She didn't raise me," I shot back. I drew the broadsword from over my shoulder. I gripped the enormous handle beneath the titanic cross guard the shield helped form.
"She has bade me not kill you and your sisters have a certain fury I would dread but whatever happens happens," she sung. She spread her fingers and a flame grew across them. "You would have had me last time if not for my maiden powers. Powers which have doubled. I'm sure you are aware. And you've been spying for me. Through this rabble but you've been on the look out nonetheless."
She made Aurum call me, then. Aurum dashed out the exit, trying to keep his life intact and escaping while we were both distracted. Cinder set a trap for me. Sustrai stepped out from behind Cinder with Black in tow. I watched and my vision faded as Sustrai narrowed her eyes at me. She was trying to use her semblance on me.
I shouted at Penny and I watched a blurring kaleidoscope fly up to them and slash out at Emerald with ten floating blades appendages. My vision snapped back into focus and in perfect time for me to see Cinder descending on me with flames pouring from her feet to aid her assault. As she flew she left fire behind on the glass dance floor. I met a strike from her similarly glass weapons and stuttered back a step on the dance floor.
I activated my semblance and brought my weapon around to match her. I drew an electric crystal from my pocket. I crushed it in my palm and sent a thunderbolt at her. She blocked it by crossing her weapons and her one eye flared at me with the power of the maidens. She gestured and a half dozen fireballs floated into place before her. She blew gently. Like she was blowing a kiss at me, I didn’t catch it, and I was forced to dance out of the way of the fireballs.
I went through them. I rolled and floated towards her through the conflagration. I stabbed my sword downward and tore up glass as I pushed it screeching across the dance floor towards her. She met my strike with both her weapons crossed.
Then she struck out at me in high, low, high fashion, alternating each blade. She twirled with the motion and I was forced on the defensive, blocking each one of her attacks. I never let her truly get close to me with the enormous blade between us.
She waved her palm and a flare shot up inside the tight room towards me. I couldn't be sure how Penny was doing against her two opponents because I was too focused on Cinder.
I blocked her and seesawed my weapon down on her. Sparks flew from her glass weapons from where my Titania edge but down into them.
"I'm going to kill you this time. We'll see how my Mother takes that," I whispered. I spoke softly as I threatened her. As I made my vow.
Lightning ran up her weapons and into my arms. It made me tremble in pain for a moment before she pushed me off of her and kicked me in my exposed chest. Then she flew at me.
"Aren't you quite the little rebel. Doing what makes mommy mad?" She laughed at that.
"Oh I'll piss her right the fuck off. Can't imagine she was happy I didn't bring the relic to her."
She pointed her sword at me and there was a kazzap of lightning. I blocked it on the edge of my weapon but she just swung her weapon around her body again. A trail of fire emanating from it and growing larger until she whipped a lash of red hot blaze right at my head.
I rolled again and came up thrusting at her, forcing her to block. She swung at me with one of her glass weapons but at the far range of my weapon I was too distant and she miscalculated.
She dropped into a crouch and pointed both her weapons at me and there was another mighty kazizzle of electricity.  I jumped over it and brought my weapon down on her head in a move that forced her to block with both of her own. It shattered the dance floor around us for yards and yards. All the way to the edge near the bar.
"You're right of course. She was most displeased. She will punish you for it given the opportunity. I think not, however. You will die here."
She waved her hand and a gale picked up. All the glass from the once smooth and now shattered dance floor flew up from it. She gestured at me and I hunkered behind the wide edge of my weapon and weathered the storm of glass pellets. Some struck into my aura and chipped it away. I held firm against the wind.
Blue light still licked at my body but it seemed like my semblance would not be enough. I couldn't imagine spending it and then being forced to fight her without it. If I spent it, when I spent it, it would have to be for the kill. I could use it for no other purpose. And it would probably have to be the Octa slash. No other attack would do enough damage in a single go to take her down except maybe a Finishing Touch.
I'd hardly touched her. Hadn't touched her, I realized.
When the gale broke down she hit me hard with both flaming feet. Not as hard as Penny had with a similar move but hard enough to send me stumbling back. Next she delivered three lighting fast diagonal slashes to my torso. She ripped away massive chunks of my aura.
Then she thrust forward and I blocked to the side. Her weapon buried in my personal soul based force field to the hilt right next to my head. She still managed to rip away a chunk of blue light from my body.
Things were seriously not good. Her magic was too much for me and her competence with a blade in each hand was nothing to scoff at.
I kicked her back. A move that caught her in the gut. Then I swung my blade towards her head in a massive strike that she caught with both her weapons. Making yet another 'x' shape. It seemed to be her go to in order to block against my titanic sword.
I screamed and flew at her. Closing the little distance between us with a shoulder check that knocked her to the ground.
I danced at her, flowing like water as she caught herself on one hand and tried to cartwheel back but I chased her roll now that she was out of position. Now that she was in serious disadvantage and close to me I made to capitalize on it.
I caught up to her and hit her once vertically diagonally downward and to the right. Then I reversed and came diagonally up and to the left. Then I can back down on her diagonally and from the right once more in a staggering triple hit. The kind I'd seen do twenty-five percent or more of Ruby's aura when I wasn't Limit Broken. When I wasn't Limitless.
I didn't spend the charge on it but I did shout, a scream left my lips as I performed the move with exertion. It flung her back and into one of the bars and into the wall in a shattering of glass and bottles.
She flew out of the hole in the wall and through the crevice her body had left in the bar. A trail of flame coming behind her and at her feet. I flew to meet her and where we struck the ground rippled like it was made of liquid for a moment before elasticity caught up with it and it shattered.
I was taller than her. I was conventionally stronger, too. Especially while Limit Break was active and I slowly lowered my weapon down onto her while her back twisted from trying to match me in the crater on the floor.
She kicked my leg at the hip but I only grunted and took it. I took one hand off my blade and backhanded her hard with my knuckles. Then I slid forward a step and reversed my hand and grabbed her by the throat and picked her up into the air. I pulled her in and kneed her in the stomach hard enough to make spittle fly from her lips.
Then Mercury came flying and kicked me in the back. Then he shot me in the back with both of his boot guns.
I twisted to my feet again on a pocket of air. He was breathing hard. So was Cinder where I'd knocked the wind out of her.
I wasn't much better and now that they were alone Emerald let out a scream where Penny slammed her hard into a wall.
"Ma'am…" Mercury trailed.
"Save Emerald," Cinder hissed.
Then I gambled. I dashed forward like I was going to hit Cinder. Then I spent Limit on a thrust but not at her. I thrust up and into Mercury's aura and then into his chest in a crackle of violet energy.
Blood flew from his lips as I speared him. Penny had done enough work for this to pay off and from the sounds of things she'd defeat Emerald too.
"No," Cinder whispered. The battle was out of her favor.
"Yes!" I roared. The edge was ours now.
I watched as Emerald plucked herself from the wall and fell to her knees. A tear on her face as we all saw Mercury slide onto my six foot blade.
"Emerald! Get us out of here!" Cinder called.
I swung my sword and Mercury flopped off the blade. He was already dead. I flexed and started charging my next semblance. With slow promise I stood and began the charge. Soon.
"Emerald!" Cinder barked. I was assaulted with a massive illusion. Penny was too from the way she stepped back in shock on the second floor. A gigantic image of my Mother rose from the twisted glass and roared.
Cinder burned a hole in the wall and grabbed Emerald's sobbing form and fled. I was too shocked by the cyclopean vision of my Mother to move.
"Cloud!" Penny called to me distantly. I fell to my knees before the image of my Mother and held my hands up like I was expecting an attack, I fumbled my sword with dumb hands. My brain burned and my mind was ajar.
Mother…
I thought. And despite that I knew it was an illusion. Despite the distance between us I heard her answer.
“My son…”
"No…" I whimpered.
“Yes…”
The voice seethed.
“Yes… you belong to me… I am your mistress…”
I could feel her shadow on the corner of my mind. She twisted into me and trapped me between agonies I knew weren't true.
"Cloud are you alright?"
The massive image of my Mother faded. But she lingered on my brain. A growing pressure. I howled in pain. She raked at my body and I convulsed.
"Cloud, it wasn't real."
"She's in my… my… my…" I stuttered like a broken record player. Then I started to froth at the mouth. I seized on the broken dance floor.
“My son… my precious son…”
"Oh my gods!" I heard Penny cry. "Don't worry, Cloud, help is on the way!"

Serpent of Eden (Part 2 - Reid Series)
Tumblr media
~ Reader’s one-night-stand with Spencer turns into a year long semester ~
Summary: Spencer and Reader attempt to navigate through the shock, horror, and confusion of the revelation that Spencer is a professor at Reader’s college. Couple: Fem!Reader x Professor Spencer Reid Category: Series, Fluff, Angst, (eventually smut) Word Count: 1.5k (this will probably be my shortest chapter) Content Warning: mentions of one-night-stand, age gap, teacher-student relationship  Disclaimer: This is a filler chapter, and you’ll probably find it boring, but it moves the story along so that we can get to the exciting parts next chapter.
PART 1 HERE!
✧・゚: *✧・゚:*
What’s that saying again?
It’s a small world?
Well, after today - I certainly agree.
More as a comment to myself, I muttered, “I guess I should’ve asked for your last name after all, Spencer.”
Was this my cruel and unusual punishment for my first one-night-stand? If so, this was enough humiliation to convince me it should be my first and last one-night-stand.
His eyes were wide with astonishment; his eyebrows knitted together. “I thought you said you worked at a law firm.”
He wasn’t mad or accusing me of lying, but he was more stunned than anything that I was really here standing in front of him. I knew his voice to be too kind to be accusatory.
“That wasn’t a lie. I do work at a law firm - I’m an intern there,” I said matter-of-factly. “I only said that to impress you because you were older and had this big shot job. Which reminds me - you said you were part of the FBI.”
“I am, but I occasionally teach here.” He almost chuckled.
It was the slight pout of both of our mouths that proved a mutual resignation to the fact that we’d reached a stalemate. We both ran out of moves and there was nowhere for us to go if we kept on this path, not unless one of us surrendered to the other, which wasn’t really an option here. Simply by the look on his face, I could tell he was going to assume the responsibility of inciting a productive discourse. And I let him, for subconsciously, I looked to him to be the bigger person, the more mature one, the wiser one, for he was the older one, too. Whether or not this was taking advantage of the natural assertiveness one gains with age, I wasn’t sure.
“W-what are you doing here?” He finally asked, bringing me back to the harsh reality of being stuck between a rock and a hard place. Had this been any other teacher, I might’ve not been so embarrassed to admit I was 20 years old and serving detention for being dress-coded. But, alas, it wasn’t any other teacher - it was Spencer . . . or Dr. Reid? Is that what I have to call him now?
“I got detention.” I sheepishly admitted.
The furrowing of his brows and narrowing of his eyes told me he didn’t believe me; all the signs of skepticism plain on his face.
“I was dress coded earlier.” If it was at all possible, that statement sounded even more ridiculous.
“Dress coded?” He clarified, like he almost didn’t believe me.
“I started taking off my sweater - not like that!” I quickly redacted, and the stunned look on his face told me he almost took it that way and found amusement in doing so. “I wasn’t stripping in front of the entire school. I just wanted to take my sweater off.”
“That shouldn’t warrant detention, though.”
“That’s what I was saying!”
And the comfortable, lighthearted dynamic that brought us together only two nights ago resumed as if it had never paused. It felt like we were at the bar again, talking as strangers falling in love, but here in this sterile classroom, I was chilled by the reminder that we were no longer two strangers getting drunk off the other’s presence. We were a student and a teacher in a professional setting.
“I’m just gonna sit down, now.” I awkwardly announced, fumbling into the furthest seat from him.
“No, no, it’s fine. I’ll just report to Ms. Whitman that you served detention, but you can go now. You don’t have to stay.” He turned away from me sharply and towards his desk, all but refusing to meet my eyes.
“No, that wouldn’t be right.”
As the sentence came from my mouth, my mind wandered into a trap my words had set. “What was right about this?” Because really, nothing was.
I knew I was charting dangerous territories by staying in his classroom alone with him, but those weren’t my intentions. If anything, this was one of those times where my “goody-two-shoes” mentality failed me. I was only furthering the chance something might happen and heightening my own attraction.
The more and more I sat across from the ever contemplative Dr. Reid, the more his figure began transforming into a work of art. I started to notice the little details, the nuances, the paint strokes. I couldn’t be bothered to figure out what he was actually doing, but I took notice of the manner that he was doing it in. He studied his papers carefully with almost the same level of intent as I had looking at him. Occasionally, his tongue would poke out between his lips and wet them, scarcely reacquainting me with the thought of how they felt against my own. His eyes would narrow at the words while he read them; his eyebrows twitching up every so often as a physical reaction to his reading material.
“Are you just going to spend the rest of detention staring at me, or are you actually going to get some work done?”
The sound of his voice snapped me out of my daze and before I could re-enter this dimension, he was already looking at me through smiling eyes.
“I am doing my work!” I defensively screeched.
“Oh, yeah? If I come over there right now and you haven’t written a single thing -”
“What?” I jested. “You gonna punish me?”
The words slipped from my mouth before my mind could process its subtly seductive suggestions.
“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have said that.” My eyes fell to my homework that I hadn’t even started on as a way to avoid his. He looked so entertained by my previous words, and that made it even worse. How could he possibly enjoy my flirtatious advances when there was so much at risk?
“I guess we should talk about-”
“What’s there to talk about?” I abruptly interrupted. “It’s not like I have your class now, and I’ve been rejected from auditing it before, so we don’t have to see each other in school ever after today.” I rambled.
“In school?” He repeated.
“What?”
“You said we don’t have to see each other in school ever after today. Were you implying that you … you want to still see me outside of -”
“No!”
I answered all too quickly for it to appear like an honest response. He was too smart to see it as anything besides what it really was - a way to save my ass.
“I mean … yeah, I did want to see you again. But that was before I found out you’re a professor at my college.”
“Part time.” He emphasized, as if that somehow made things less illegal.
A frown formed on my face to tell him that that clarification didn’t make anything better.
“It’s your call.” I finally renounced. This was probably the most honest and raw my emotions could have been. I couldn’t have said anything truer to my feelings than that. “You have more at risk here than I do. If you say you don’t want to see me again, then you won’t. But if you think there’s something between us worth exploring, I’m willing to make it work.”
He was visibly conflicted; the weight of my words stealing his voice. He was quiet for more moments than comfortable, but he would finally tell me his answer only after rising from his desk to join me at the other end of the classroom. I stood up from my desk, making our lack of professional distance all the more glaringly obvious.
“(Y/n),” He slid a hand onto my cheek and up through my hair. “You’re worth the risk.”
He was about to seal his promise with a kiss, but when we leaned in, three hard knocks hit against the door. I jumped back in startlement, while Spencer did just the opposite. He leapt into action, abandoning me at the back of the classroom to flee to the front. He must’ve recognized the knocks were coming from the janitor just outside his door.
“Any trash you need taken out, Mr. Reid?” The janitor asked while scanning the room, glazing right over me.
“No, nope. I’m okay today, thank you. Bye, Randy.” Spencer waved him away with his hand, and luckily, I must’ve camouflaged into the wall because he didn’t seem to see me or my profuse blushing.
“I’m so sorry. I forgot he comes here every Monday at 3:45.” Spencer apologized while slowly making his way back to me.
“You forgetting something? How can that be.” I joked - well enough to hide my ever growing paranoia behind a mask of comical enjoyment.
“What can I say? That’s what you do to me. You make me forget everything else in the world.”
His words were enough to woo me certainly, even enough to accept his resumed kiss, but they weren’t enough to convince me to commit to the moment. It was spoiled by the knowledge of our sins, stolen by the fear of our actions. I simply couldn’t enjoy our relationship to the fullest anymore.
And I never would again.
