Looking Forward
If I trust my brother... and he did my dad's will properly... and set up my trust correctly... then I should be able to stay in the house for roughly 2 years.
If I trust my brother.
Then I can either sell the house and use that money for a small apartment or try to find a roommate situation to help me stay in the house a little longer. The nice thing about paying the mortgage is I can get most of that money back if I ever do sell the house. It's almost like a savings account with all my stuff inside.
Let's just hope the property value doesn't plummet for some reason. Though it has been around the same amount for many years.
I like living in my house. It's what I've known for 30 years. But being alone in the house is going to be a hard adjustment. After two years (or sooner) I may want to move near Katrina or Delling so I am closer to a support system. I wish we could all live next door to each other. Or live on a farm/ranch situation. And instead of chickens it is just a bunch of free range corgis.
I tried convincing Katrina to build a pool house, but she has a small backyard and no pool. HOWEVER... Apparently Florida has a lot of "mother-in-law suites." I had no idea that had a name, but I could be Katrina's mother-in-law. I have the skill set to guilt trip, make passive-aggressive comments, and judge how she raises her future kids. (And any other outdated stereotypes I've learned from 80s comedians.)
But I also like the idea of having a roommate. I could accommodate a single person or a small family. And I'd love to have an animal of some kind around. We have a huge fenced-in area left over from Otis.
I think I could offer someone a pretty sweet living situation. I have a full basement apartment that I reside in and so the entire upstairs is available for people to live in. I could charge cheaper rent than a cheap apartment in exchange for helping with chores that I struggle to do.
There is plenty of furniture and appliances ready to use. Full laundry room. I've got a really nice home theater in the living room so they can watch movies in style. I also have a few hundred TV series and several thousand movies on Plex. They get a full kitchen and bathroom to themselves. Plenty of garage space and a long driveway to park vehicles. They can have up to 5 rooms to do whatever in. They could do 3 bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, and a small den area. My mom liked the den because she could watch her Judge Judy shows while my dad watched JAG in the living room.
If they don't have a family, they could convert 2 of the bedrooms into office space or craft rooms or S&M dungeons. They can decorate any way they'd like. But they have to keep the sex swing clean so I can use it. Not for sex--I just enjoy centripetal forces. And they'll have great privacy as I will be in the downstairs apartment. They'd only see me if I exit the house or if they invite me to dinner or movie night.
All they would have to pay is whatever I can't cover. I'd estimate in the $600-$800 range once the trust fund runs out. Plus the chores like cleaning and yard duty. That's a good deal, right?
The only downside is the house is in a deteriorating neighborhood. Businesses are closing and people are moving away. Our street is pretty isolated so there isn't much danger or crime. But we are adjacent to a dangerous neighborhood and the schools aren't great. That said, while there isn't much around here, in St. Louis you are always ~25 minutes from anything you need. The highway is literally down the street so driving to anywhere is fairly hassle free.
Also, I'd be happy to lend out the car for transport to a job. I'll only need it to get groceries every few weeks. They'd have to get added to my insurance and help with gas and maintenance.
Soooo... yeah, I think I have a lot to offer with my house.
They do have to be okay with my big subwoofer rattling things. The sound doesn't really travel through the floor, but the vibrations can. I can tone it down if they are sleeping though.
Oh! We also have a huge workshop on the property too. It could be used for working on cars or woodworking or an art space. It has electricity, lighting, heating and is perfect for anything that requires getting dirty. If that makes sense.
One idea I have been considering is seeking out an unhoused queer individual who was kicked out or is struggling to afford a decent place. If their parents don't want them, maybe I could provide a safe place. Things are so scary for LGBTQ+ folks right now. Especially in Missouri. St. Louis is a pretty blue city, but Missouri is a blood red state. If I could do something small for someone like that, I would be happy to help. Could be mutually beneficial.
So those are all of my thoughts and ideas as of now.
Again, if I trust my brother, I should have a decent amount of time to figure things out.
If things go sideways, I might be screwed.
So far he seems to be doing all the things he should be doing to get me sorted.
I'm going to choose to trust him.
With my life.
Oof.

Daniel Villarreal at LGBTQ Nation:
The once progressive New College of Florida has trashed hundreds of books—including numerous LGBTQ+ titles from its now-defunct Gender and Diversity Center—instead of giving the books to students or re-selling them as allowed by state law, the Sarasota Herald-Tribune reported. The college, which Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) has tried to make more conservative, threw out the books on Tuesday afternoon. Students were neither on campus nor notified of the books’ removal, even though students have been given opportunities in the past to purchase books removed from the college’s library collection. In this case, local activists retrieved some of the books before they were taken off campus.
Photos showed feminist and LGBTQ+ books among the trashed titles, including Same-Sex Unions in Premodern Europe by John Boswell, When I Knew by Robert Trachtenberg, and Cures: A Gay Man’s Odyssey by Martin Duberman.
New College spokesperson Nathan March called the aforementioned reporting about the books’ removal false. March said that the books were trashed as part of the campus libraries’ “routine maintenance” and because the college’s gender studies program no longer exists. The college’s board of trustees eliminated the program shortly after DeSantis appointed numerous conservatives board members. March said that Florida Statute 237 forbids books purchased with state funds from being donated or sold. However, the statute states that the college can dispose of state-funded property by transferring it to a private nonprofit agency or selling it openly to the public.
[...] DeSantis said he planned to turn New College into the “Hillsdale of the South,” a reference to the private and infamously conservative Christian college in Michigan.  In January 2023, DeSantis appointed six new members to the New College’s board of trustees who were loyal to him and his ideology – including far-right anti-LGBTQ+ activist Christopher Rufo. The college had a reputation for being progressive and queer-friendly, but Rufo said earlier this year that the goal of what has been described as a “hostile takeover of a liberal college” was to “provide an alternative for conservative families in the state of Florida to say there is a public university that reflects your values.” “If we can take this high-risk, high-reward gambit and turn it into a victory, we’re going to see conservative state legislators starting to reconquer public institutions all over the United States,” Rufo said.
The Rufo-ization of New College of Florida continues to yield disastrous results, this time by throwing away hundreds of books (most of which had feminist and/or LGBTQ+ themes) that were formerly housed in the now-defunct Gender and Diversity Center.

Into the Cricketverse - Spring Break
Cricket and Marena first meeting let's goooooo
This was supposed to be a "miscommunication teehee" piece but it turned into angst at the end whoops
As always, Cricket belongs to the phenomenal @thesightstoshowyou
~
Spring break meant a month spent in Jesse’s penthouse in the Florida Keys. Having never been to college, or any school really, the concept held no weight in Marena’s mind, but apparently it was like Christmas for Chromeskull. The massive influx of visitors from all across the country made for a bounty of easy prey, and the cops’ attempts to control the chaos of the drunken partiers kept them too busy to worry about some pesky murders - at least until the tapes started rolling in a few weeks later. For Marena’s part, it meant people in brightly colored clothes making a lot of noise on the beach below while she watched from the security of the penthouse’s lofty patio, getting her brains fucked out multiple times a day as the excitement of the hunt cranked Jesse’s libido up to nearly unmanageable levels, and a lingering worry that the Miami homicide department would somehow sense she was back in the area.
She would never understand how Jesse returned to the same murder spots again and again with such confidence. The mask helped, she supposed.
Marena was curled up with a book on one of the sitting room sofas while Jesse showered off the sweat from his morning workout (mercifully, one involving his private gym and not her today). She’d started reading a lot more, in both English and Russian, after being acquired by Jesse, and what had once been a laborious task was now something she actually enjoyed. The novel before her, though, was dense and confusing enough that she felt like she was twelve years old and just learning to read all over again. She’d had to start making notes on a scrap of paper just to keep track of what the hell was going on.
The lock on the front door clicked open. Her head jerked up at the sound. The maintenance staff for all of Jesse’s properties were strictly on-call - no regularly scheduled visits, lest someone walk in on something they shouldn’t see. Was it the cops? The FBI? She’d have expected a battering ram in that case, although it wouldn’t work on the reinforced door.
Setting her book down on the coffee table, Marena slipped her hand into her pocket to grab her knife and listened as hard as she could. There were a few muffled shuffles and thumps, a brief murmur of voices. The shower was no longer running, but Jesse had a skincare routine that rivaled that of a high-class hooker, so it would be some time before he emerged. (She had mentioned the hooker thing to Jesse exactly once, and he’d choked her so hard she blacked out the next time they had sex, which was approximately two minutes after she made the comment.) She would have to be the frontline against whatever intruder was coming down the hall.
Asa fucking Emory walked in, carrying several duffel bags, trailed by a pretty brunette woman in a sage green sundress.
Marena’s spine stiffened as she locked eyes with the predator on the other side of the room. Asa’s face was an impassive mask, but she could tell by the flashing of his eyes that he was hardly thrilled by her presence. To say their first and only meeting had been… fraught would be an understatement. Much of it felt like a fever dream to her, being of neither sound mind or body at the time. Jesse had later told her that it was only his direct and insistent interference that kept her from being turned into one of the mutilated creations that Asa crafted at his torturemurder hotel.
But none of that explained what Asa was doing here now. Did he have some sort of timeshare on the apartment? Had Jesse invited him to join in on the spring break slaughter party? And who the hell was the woman clasping her hands nervously behind him?
“Marena,” Asa said icily.
“Dr. Emory,” Marena replied, equally glacial.
He glanced around the room.
“Where is he?”
“Shower.”
Asa sighed heavily through his nose, as though Jesse’s inconvenient hygiene schedule was Marena’s fault. The mystery woman bit her lip. She opened her mouth. Reconsidered, closed it again. Her eyes bounced between Asa and Marena. Beautiful eyes: one warm brown, the other mossy green. She took a small, fortifying breath and spoke up in a timid whisper.
“As-”
“Quiet,” Asa snapped, and she immediately shut her mouth again with an audible click, shrinking back into herself.
Marena felt a pit forming in her stomach. A phantom smell of perfume, sweat, and blood on the back of her tongue. She was gripping the knife so tightly she could feel the filigreed pattern of the handle imprinting itself on her skin. This was so, so not good.
Asa’s gaze was lingering on her bare neck. She’d had a thick leather collar the last time they saw each other. What did he make of its absence now?
The stalemate was broken when Jesse sauntered in, clad in nothing but his silk boxers and a towel around his neck. He grinned broadly, so clearly he was expecting the company and had conveniently neglected to tell Marena.
“Took your sweet time getting here.”
“You don’t get to lecture me about punctuality, Cromeans,” Asa growled.
Jesse chuckled, then looked over at the woman, who had straightened fractionally when he walked into the room but was still half hidden behind Asa’s broad shoulders.
“Aw, don’t tell me you’re getting all shy on me now,” he said, followed by an unfamiliar sign that must have been the woman’s name. She gave him a little wave and a quiet “hi”.
“Manners, Cricket.”
“Sorry, Sir.” The woman, Cricket, stepped fully into view and folded her hands in front of her. “It’s good to see you again, Daddy.”
Marena choked, on air or spit or her own incredulity. All eyes turned on her when she started to cough: Cricket’s quickly dropping to the floor, Asa’s as cold as ever, and Jesse’s dancing with mirth. The latter was smirking, that smug, shit-stirring grin he wore whenever he did something he knew would get under Marena’s skin. She glared at him while she tried to get her breathing under control, knowing he could read her face as easily as she could read his.
Fucking really?!
Fucking really, baby. C’mon, don’t you wanna try it out?
“There are so many things wrong with you,” she croaked. “What the fuck.”
There was a soft, terrified gasp from Cricket but Marena was already walking away. Jesse grabbed her arm as she passed and she tried to recoil - “don’t fucking touch me, god” - but of course he didn’t listen, reeling her in and planting a kiss square on her mouth before releasing her and sending her on her way with a swat on the ass.
Her shudder of disgust was almost entirely unfaked.
***
“You are far too lenient on her,” Asa groused after the door to the master bedroom slammed shut.
“Yeah, but she’s fun when she gets riled up like that.” Asa fixed him with a glare that had brought many a grown man to tears and Jesse rolled his eyes, knowing it would piss the other man off even more.
“You won’t be laughing when it’s your neck with a needle in it,” Asa snarled. He grabbed the duffel bags and stalked off to the guest bedroom, muttering uncomplimentary things under his breath. Cricket remained frozen in place, anxiously clutching at her locket. Jesse could see her brain working overtime trying to process what had just happened. She jumped when he tipped her face up with a finger under her chin.
“Did I do something wrong?” she asked tremulously.
“Not at all, doll. She’s just shy.”
Cricket gave him a dubious look that made him laugh before schooling her face into neutrality.
“And Sir is… okay? With that behavior?” Oh, she was stressed stressed if she was referring to Asa as “Sir” when he wasn’t even in the room. Poor little thing.
“Doesn’t matter if Asa likes it. She’s mine.”
She mulled that over.
“That time Sir left me at the hotel overnight, he said he had to watch something for you… that was her?”
Jesse nodded. Cricket bit at her lip. He could tell she wanted to ask about what had happened that night, but she was a good girl. She didn’t survive as long as she had by prying.
“Okay. Thank you, D-” she cut herself off, indecisive.
“Just ‘Jesse’ to you now, doll. Unless you prefer it the other way, I won’t mind.” He winked. She blushed.
“I should help Sir unpack,” she murmured, and scurried off.
***
Two of Marena’s fingernails were chewed bloody and she was going to work on finger number three when Jesse crouched down in front of her perch on the window seat.
“Tell me what’s wrong.”
What was wrong? What was wrong was that someone had ripped a figure straight out of her adolescence and plunked it down in front of her like some kind of sick threat. She had known so many girls who made themselves small and sweet, the only way they knew how to survive the men who led them away every night and gave them pain, and even then it was rarely enough to save them.
“Her name is just Cricket?”
“She doesn’t need any other name.”
Dehumanizing. Reducing woman to insect.
“She wasn’t with Asa that night.”
“I asked him to keep her out of the way. He can be rather… single-minded when it comes to Cricket, and I needed his full attention on you.” Jesse shook his head indulgently. “Not that it made much of a difference in the end, huh?”
The Marena of now was already far more domesticated than the Marena of eighteen months ago, but maybe that wasn’t enough for Jesse anymore. Maybe this was his subtle way of telling her what was in store, even though he was hardly a subtle man.
“How long has she been Cricket?”
“Asa’s had her for years. Since before I met him. She was actually part of my welcoming committee.”
Was that nostalgia on his face? Marena felt sick. Jesse noticed her expression and frowned.
“I haven’t touched her since we met, baby. That part of our arrangement ended the moment I laid eyes on you.”
Arrangement? Jesse tried to take her hands in his, but she snatched them away.
“I don’t care who you fuck, Jesse! That’s not the goddamn issue!”
“Then TELL ME WHAT IS.”
The issue was that the woman in the other room had given up her entire self just to be able to keep breathing, and Jesse expected Marena to do something as petty as hate her. The issue was that the fate she had railed so hard against, had been willing to die to escape, was coming for her no matter what. The issue was that he wanted to turn her back into a doll, and whether he succeeded or killed her, she lost either way. The issue was that he had always been on the other end of the knife, had never had to fight against being made into something lesser than himself. The issue was that all of her pain and fear and heartbreak meant nothing because he decided it didn’t. Her life wasn’t hers, it never had been and it never would be, and the latest reminder of that was cupping her cheek in his hand and staring at her like she was a silly little girl.
Please understand, she begged him with her eyes. I need you to understand.
He didn’t. He thought he did, but he was wrong. He thought she was jealous and lying about it for the sake of her pride. He would go out tonight and turn some other girl she didn’t have the bandwidth to care about into a carcass, and then he would come back and kiss her and fuck her and make her cum and she would like it and hate herself for liking it. They would fall asleep and she would have nightmares that left her chest and throat aching with unvoiced screams.
She let him kiss her without complaint before he got dressed, and again before he left the room. She slumped against the window and watched all the scurrying little ants on the beach below. She felt numb. Doll-like.

FORT MYERS, Fla. - A Florida Gulf Coast University student was nabbed after he allegedly tampered with a building's sprinkler system and broke into a pump room by crawling through a vent, university police said.
Nathan Eggleston, 28, was arrested and charged with damaging property, burglary of an unoccupied structure and interfering with firefighter equipment after the incident that unfolded on Dec. 13, according to an arrest affidavit from the FGCU University Police Department (UPD).
A witness told officers that she saw a man, later identified as Eggleston, do something to the fire sprinkler system in the West Lake Village Community Center Building, the affidavit said. The fire alarm went off, and then she said she saw Eggleston allegedly using several bricks to break into a vent on the bottom of the door before crawling in and gaining access to the pump room in the building.
According to FGCU's website, this is a student housing building reserved for upper-class students.
Officers responded to the building and ordered Eggleston to exit the pump room, but no response was received, the affidavit said. An officer used a flashlight through a broken vent on the bottom of the door, which revealed Eggleston in the corner of the room. He was ordered once again to exit the room, and he finally complied. He was placed in handcuffs pending an investigation.
Eggleston agreed to speak with officers post-Miranda, and he admitted to pulling the first flush system and crawling into the pump room space, according to the affidavit.
When asked why he would be in an interview with a detectives, he responded, "I f----- up and hit the first flush system. I had no right. I thought I would do it before or after I graduate." He also told officers that one of the maintenance workers showed him how to use the lever.
"If you turn it half way (sic) down, it blast (sic) like 5 gallons of water a second and if you turn all the way down it blast (sic) like 15 gallons a second and it floods out West Lake," Eggleston told officers, per the affidavit.
He added that he "freaked out" because the fire alarm went off and just "laid there" when he heard officers yelling at him to come out, the affidavit said.
During his arrest, he also reportedly told officers that he's a "maintenance assistant" and then "my friend is a maintenance assistant."
Eggleston has since been released from custody after posting $10,750 bond.
FOX 35 reached out to Florida Gulf Coast University about the incident, but they declined to comment.

Even if Jesse has money saved away, I’d hope he would tbh… there is no way they can survive in Boston on just her wage (which I’m guessing won’t be much compared to actual doctors?) as Boston is very expensive but so is Massachusetts in general even if you’re mega rich or famous. There are property taxes, other taxes, school fees and everything else… it’s not called Taxachusetts for nothing! She comes across as very high maintenance and very spoiled, so I see her running through his savings very quick tbh.
Again, looks like she’s pulled him to the East Coast where she is from even if she’s originally from Florida. He’d apparently lived in Chicago since 2011 until 2023.
She is in research so yeah it looks about $150k maybe...
A decent place to rent is about $6-$9k a month.
Mass has the number one public school rating in the country, but you pay for it...

Excerpt from this New York Times Op-Ed:
Last December a surprise storm passed through Florida’s Pinellas County, ripping away beaches and wiping out half of the sand dunes from St. Petersburg to Clearwater. The damage was extensive, and all the more painful because the county had just spent about $26 million hauling in sand to build up the dunes after a hurricane had pummeled them in August.
But this turn of events is far from unusual. Beach communities around the world are spending staggering sums replacing sand as big storms and rising seas wash it away. What used to be a maintenance task every 10 years or so is now often an annual event.
For many communities, engineering the beach is worth the hefty price tag to protect properties and tourism. But as climate change hastens beach erosion, trucking or shipping huge quantities of sand to replenish beaches is likely to become economically untenable and logistically impractical. Policymakers may soon have to make painful decisions about which shores and structures to save.
This doesn’t necessarily spell disaster for beach lovers. Beaches were intended to move around, and they’re better off when they do. Unlike other effects of climate change that look bleaker the further into the future you look, migrating beaches could ultimately make America’s coasts healthier by providing coral reefs and wildlife affected by sand replenishment with the habitats they need to thrive.
Beaches will only require more nourishment as worsening storms wash them away, sea level rise makes it harder to keep sand in place, excessive groundwater extraction causes land to sink and the rivers that once deposited sand on the coast dry up. Already beaches near San Diego and San Clemente, Calif., are shrinking by an average of 4.75 feet per year. Without them, nothing separates the fury of the ocean from the homes, resorts and other buildings that dot the shore.
Even finding sand has grown more difficult; many offshore reserves are already depleted, forcing dredging vessels to venture further offshore to find sand and dig it up from the ocean floor. In some places sand has to be transported by the truckload from inland at considerable extra cost — or even purchased from other countries.

Omg what happened with desantis
okay i’m gonna explain this to the best of my knowledge BUT it’s a really complex legal situation that i don’t understand all the intricacies of so i def encourage you to read a comprehensive article like this one for a more solid explanation. but basically: since the 60s disney world has existed in a district called reedy creek, which oversees the infrastructure and development of disney world’s property. if you’ve ever been to dw, you know that its property is massive and basically like its own functioning city. there are expansive roads between parks and resorts, a hospital, a fire station, residencies, etc. all operated by disney and overseen by reedy creek. the reedy creek district isn’t owned by the disney corporation, per say, but its board is elected by the land owners. disney officials and higher-ups make up 2/3 of the land owners. SO, for years disney could basically operate however it wanted without needing approval from the state of florida the way other theme parks do like say, six flags or universal studios.
recently, disney opposed the don’t say gay bill (as a financial decision, don’t get it twisted) and desantis’ response was to take control of reedy creek. he did exactly that and renamed the district “the central florida tourism oversight district” which is operated by a board of people desantis hand picked himself. and he hand picked The most vile evil republicans who backed don’t say gay and are actively supporting desantis’ entire evil platform. this was purely an act of spite against disney for not backing don’t say gay. and for awhile there, it looked like desantis’ new board on his new district would be able to really fuck disney over and limit what they could build & develop & desantis even said he would maintain like “christian family values” in disney entertainment which….. he has no legal ability to do.
BUT as of today it’s been discovered that prior to this takeover by desantis, disney signed legally binding agreements with reedy creek that basically gave them total control over the board for the next 30 years, no matter what. desantis’ new board just discovered this, and it looks as of now like they’re actually powerless beyond issues like road maintenance. with these legal agreements, they won’t be able to limit park expansion or heavily tax disney or impose specific construction limits, basically anything they were planning and hoping to do.
and look i don’t care about disney as a company. they’re an awful company who do not care about their employees (literally just raised wages to $18 for their staff this month after a lot of pressure) and even when they seemingly do something good, it’s a calculated business decision designed to reap them more profits. BUT! amusement parks can be the literal foundation of a states economy. dollywood brought its region of tennessee massive growth and job opportunities for its residents, for example. disney world is majorly important to central florida’s economy, and desantis was acting completely out of spite and hatred for gay people when he made the decision to try and damage disney’s economic health via fucking with disney world, because it would damage central florida’s health as well. so it’s nice to see desantis and his hand picked board realizing today that they might be fucked!
