How about a long awaited bus stop grafitti update?
Tumblr media
Unfortunately the "trans rights are human rights" got a bit ruined by the rain and I forgot to bring a sharpie to go over the letters so may do that tomorrow quickly coming back from work.
"Disability rights now" Sunflower (that you can't actually read in this picture) had the petals improved because only half were done and its the one bit I can see driving past.
New additions
- MMIW2SP hand print (not done with my hand of course I'm not leaving obvious fingerprints)
- "Equity for all not privilege for some"
- The little six stripe pride flag beneath that.
Wanted to do the BLM fist by the hand print as well but forgot black paint.
I do want to tie it all togther at somepoint and make it more of a mural but don't have any solid design ideas.

talking shop: because it's been on my mind lately, and because I know you've been writing a lot lately! what do you do when you feel stuck on a project, or nothing seems to be working? I guess this is a question about "writer's block" but I kind of hate that term--what do you do when writing feels really hard?
So I have a couple of approaches depending on what it is!
So firstly, if it's fanfiction... remember this is FOR FUN. It's supposed to be fun! If it's not feeling fun you don't owe anybody anything! It's okay to take a break! I think we are SO conditioned to think of things as content and we forget that people used to release fic over periods of years around busy lives!
But as for concrete stuff when I want to do the work or it's for original fiction I follow these rules:
Demystify immediately. Writing is work. It's not a vision, it's not the idea. The idea is nothing! Writing is WORK. It's not the spreadsheet or the pinterest or the intention, it's sitting and writing and rewriting and editing! So you have to write, and it might be shit, but you have to do it! Don't wait for a muse, work it out.
I very often move to another part of the project. I'm not a linear writer, I go where the need is. I might have another scene I can try, or I might have another angle I need to look at. I might re-write a scene from another perspective, see if that opens up something.
I might try an exercise. Steering the Craft by Ursula K LeGuin is my favourite for this, but there's TONS of free resources on the internet. The British National Centre for Writing is an excellent place to start.
If really nothing is working, then I read. I might reread what I have done so far, I might look for something which is an influence. I have four reading lists - pleasure, research and nonfiction, language, and craft. The latter two don't have to be books on writing, they can be fiction that I'm rereading with a critical eye because I admire something, and those are the ones I go back to. Again, hyper-consumption means I don't think people re-read as much they maybe need to!
I try and write 500 words a day. Some of these are going to be original work, some fanfiction, some articles or contributions to other publications. I will give myself a day off a week, if I'm really too tired, and sometimes I really, really am too tired. If I can't physically write because of chronic pain, I might dictate instead, which isn't always the best for output, but it's about creating the idea that this is work for me. Because I want it to be! Sometimes I write a lot more too, but I try not to exhaust myself where I can.
But to circle back... if it's a hobby, it is completely, completely fine to put it down and find other joys. More than fine, it's revitalising. We need space to breathe, to think, to find joy and inspiration in the world too!

A transphobic talking point is that allowing trans women into women's spaces will make women unsafe.
Science shows that this isn't true, and common sense shows that putting trans women in men's rooms and trans men in women's rooms makes no sense if you don't want men in the women's bathrooms.
We need to follow the science to see what actually makes women safer in public. The short answer? More female arcitects.
"
So what needs to happen? Yes, streets need better lighting, but not just on main routes: veer off onto a side road and they’re usually dimly lit. That means women avoid them, which in turn leads to those streets appearing even more inhospitable and more people avoiding them.
Claustrophobic, enclosed designs need to be eradicated: bus stops should be clear glass with two entrances and lifts, where possible, should be on the external façade of buildings, and also be transparent. Where stairwells are required, they need to be wide, as do pavements, thereby creating a greater sense of space.
Unwelcoming underpasses need to be revitalised: in Tokyo’s Ikebukuro district, an area infamous for sexual harassment, a subway near the train station nicknamed the ‘pee tunnel’ was transformed into an urban art gallery so footfall increased.
Measures to increase people numbers such as these would contribute to boosting ‘natural surveillance’ or ‘eyes on the street’, as the renowned US urban activist Jane Jacobs has pointed out, where people are safer because their visibility to other members of the public is increased. As Jacobs wrote back in 1961: ‘The first thing to understand is that the public peace of cities is not kept primarily by the police, as necessary as police are.  Horrifying public crimes can, and do, occur in well-lighted subway stations when no effective eyes are present. They virtually never occur in darkened theaters where many people and eyes are present.’
A busy street – or ‘active sidewalk ballet’ as Jacobs puts it – is the best form of security.

UK ROCK BEST 100 ALBUMS - The 00's [CROSSBEAT (August 2006)]
Tumblr media
00's UK rock's current location, where a diverse range of personalities are in turmoil
In the early 2000s, UK rock music was in a state of chaos, with the unprecedented idol boom taking over the leading role in the music world, but the seeds for the next generation could be seen here and there.
Since the end of the 1990s, several eclectic blues/folk/electronica bands, described as "the British answer to Beck", have emerged, and a branch of this, the "New Acoustic", has been gaining local attention. The post-rock/neo-prog rock scene developed in tandem with the rise of Radiohead, while the "new acoustic" bands that branched off from it gained local attention. It was Coldplay who drove an important wedge in the direction of the scene there. The band's "orthodox" approach to music captured the hearts and minds of the public at a time when there was an unabated demand for lyrical rock and a thirst for new Radiohead releases that were confused by the electronica-driven sound of the band. They went on to conquer the USA.
However, it was the American bands such as The Strokes and The White Stripes, and the Scandinavian and Australian bands such as The Hives and The Vines that brought about a decisive turning point in a situation where pop, dance and mellow music still dominated. It was perhaps the UK that was most affected by this simultaneous worldwide garage rock revival. People hungry for aggressive guitar rock greeted the band with enthusiasm, and new British acts such as The Libertines and Razorlight soon responded. The UK rock counter-attack began in earnest.
This led to a rapid revival of guitar rock in the UK. In fact, studies showed that guitar sales had increased several times faster than at the end of the 1990s. The fact that Alex Turner, frontman of the now flying Arctic Monkeys, was inspired by Vines as his first live experience as a frontman is testimony to this virtuous cycle.
The rise of guitar music has resulted in a wide-ranging revitalisation that is not confined to one genre. In Liverpool, for example, a unique and individual scene was flourishing around the local Delta Sonic label, represented by the eclectic psychedelic The Coral, and the fusion of rock and groove (The Music, Kasabian, etc.) also established an area of its own. Muse, who at the time of their debut were treated as a Radiohead follower, established their own dramatic rock opera world. Then came Franz Ferdinand, who further dramatically rewrote the UK rock map. With their clever blend of sonic sharpness and pop danceability, the neo-New Wave/post-punk revival (Bloc Party, Kaiser Chiefs, etc.) was in full bloom at once. This movement, which has been described as the second coming of Brit-pop, is not just a rehash of New Wave, but is also the culmination of 40 years of British rock music from the 1960s to the present (beat, glam, art rock, Madchester, etc.). -Sumi Imai
Tumblr media
Emperor Tomato Ketchup Stereolab (1996) A mid-period masterpiece that cleverly digested the experimental elements of later electronica into pop songs. Their taste and skill crystallised at their highest point. -Mima
OK Computer Radiohead (1997) Third album that catapulted Radiohead to the top of the world's top bands. Not the most accessible work, but perhaps it was the fact that it was somewhat esoteric that got so many people hooked. -Koguchi
Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space Spiritualized® (1997) Jason Pierce led an orchestra in building this cerebrally delusional soundscape. A dizzying druggy spectacle that connects New Orleans and space in a straight line. -Kuroda
Word Gets Around Stereophonics (1997) The first album by this burly rock trio from South Wales, including the singalong classic "A Thousand Trees", and Kelly Jones' narrative lyrics were also highly acclaimed. -Yamashita
Urban Hymns The Verve (1997) The Verve's 'Urban Hymns' turned the previously often under-performing group into a national band (and a success in the USA). Listen to Richard Ashcroft's soulful singing. -Koguchi
The Man Who Travis (1999) A major breakthrough (second) with Nigel Godrich as producer, bringing naïve songwriting to the fore. Don't forget they were there before Coldplay. -Koguchi
Community Music Asian Dub Foundation (2000) Second generation Asians living in the UK hit the scene with their one-of-a-kind groove, and also worked with Primal with their anti-establishment message. This album is a reflection of London as a racial melting pot. -Otani
Rock Action Mogwai (2001) This is their controversial work, which is a step forward from My Bloody Valentine-esque guitar experimentation. It's impressive that they feature breakbeats and vocals in a big way. -Kuroda
A Rush of Blood to the Head Coldplay (2002) The band have continued to enjoy such huge commercial success since their debut that it's almost a little depressing. This second album is another fine piece of work with well-crafted songs, and has exploded around the world. -Hirose
The Coral The Coral (2002) 1st album by Liverpool's young super-individuals. They showcased their nostalgia by mixing psychedelic, acid folk and even Mersey Beat. They had hits such as "Skeleton Key." -Yamashita
Up the Bracket The Libertines (2002) Undoubtedly one of the most important albums of 00's UK rock. The band's unstable, uncontrollable performances and poetic genius in their depiction of everyday life painfully redefined "punk". -Sawada
The Music The Music (2002) UK rock newcomer of 2002, with a no-questions-asked groove. The whole band seemed to be beating to a single beat, and their development was simply breathtaking. Being Japanophiles, they have already visited Japan seven times. -Otani
Absolution Muse (2003) An epic rock drama combining hard guitar sounds with beautiful classical elements. Excessive romanticism has transformed the post-90s values of 'cool'. -Mima
Phantom Power Super Furry Animals (2003) A masterpiece from the Welsh outfit that succeeded in making a sonic leap forward. By suppressing their anger and mixing it with humour, their serious message stands out even more strongly. -Kuroda
Franz Ferdinand Franz Ferdinand (2004) This Glaswegian four-piece crossed disco with new wave and created a worldwide fever in 2004. They are the ones who started the current UK rock boom. -Koguchi
Kasabian Kasabian (2004) New working-class rock of the 00's. The 90's hooligan appearance of Oasis and Primal was successfully evolved with 00's dance grooves. -Sawada
Hopes and Fears Keane (2004) One of the bestsellers of 00's UK rock, which popularised the middle-class rock pioneered by Coldplay. In a sense, the ultimate form of "melody supremacy". -Sawada
A Grand Don't Come for Free The Streets (2004) The Streets' second album from the UK garage scene. The song depicted the reality of working-class youths and gained overwhelming support, becoming No.1. Excellent dance music without lyrics. -Yamashita
Silent Alarm Bloc Party (2005) A record that symbolised the era when the 00's rock groove became known to the world together with Franz. The jittery beats are appealing, but the melodies are also very melancholy. -Sawada
Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not Arctic Monkeys (2006) Straightforward and straight to the point. A shocking debut album that opened up the possibilities of rock music with the most difficult sound to make it sound fresh these days. A brilliant crystallisation of pure initial impulse and passionate energy. -Otani
Translator's Note: And that's it for covering 50 years of UK rock music in 100 albums. Honestly, the reason why I scanned and even translated this while article was just because Chris Martin was in the picture. Would be nice to have Matt there instead, but I also like seeing a white man with curly blond hair and blue eyes. Hard to resist him ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Vievecor City’s annual EARTH DAY EVENT is finally upon us!
The week following Earth Day (which falls on April 22nd) is one where the elves have closed off Vievecor City Park to the general public so that they can revitalise the park and also aid in the annual migration of magical creatures. This week will end in two day party held in the park and everyone from the supernatural community is invited.
All guests are welcome to visit the park at any time during the week, even before the designated party days, to witness the migration of this year’s magical creatures.
THE ANNUAL MAGICAL CREATURE MIGRATION
The annual migrations have taken place in Vievecor City Park every year, with a different magical creature being assigned to the elves in major cities across the world and the elves in Vievecor City have been assigned dragons for the year 2023.
Tumblr media
DRAGONS are large reptilian creatures that exist throughout the world with cultures across the globe treating them with various degrees of fear, reverence and respect. In the West, dragons tend to be winged, horned, and are capable of breathing fire. In the East, dragons are highly intelligent, lack wings, have more serpentine bodies that are still able to fly through the air and can control the weather.
All dragons are highly intuitive about people and the world around them and this sense will only grow stronger with age. Sizes of dragons across the world vary greatly, but these creatures do not stop growing throughout their lives and it is easy to determine how old they are just by looking at them. Each dragon has a name that they earn over time that they use when communicating with anyone.
Tumblr media
Back in the past, many centuries ago before The Pact was formed, these magical creatures were treated by humans with a deep sense of respect and reverence, especially by cultures in the East who often times looked to them for protection and were symbols good luck and fortune. Eastern dragons are more benevolent, kind and patient. While in the West, the sentiment towards dragons gradually turned towards fear as they were seen by humans as terrifying beasts. It is because of this sentiment that Western dragons are fiercer, more protective of their kind and quicker to anger in modern times.
These days, dragons number much less than they did over five centuries ago and live in places around the world where large swaths of land and nature still exist.
After The Pact was formed, the elves all around the world organised these annual migrations to help them and to also allow others in the supernatural community to witness the beauty of these creatures. The elves are also very adamant on preserving nature as much as possible because, like themselves, magical creatures of all kinds can only thrive in natural environments.
The elves are aided by:
Deities who have volunteered aid are in charge of opening large portals in the park for the magical creatures to move through
Witches from the Dumisani Coven tend to have more of an affinity with nature and animals and can volunteer to interact with and help guide the magical creatures
Witches who are experts in animal magic can volunteer to interact with and help guide the magical creatures
Werewolves have an animal intuition that allows them to read magical creatures quite naturally and can volunteer to interact with and help guide them if needed
Everyone else in the supernatural community are welcome to come to the park to watch the migration but are encouraged not to go near the dragons without an elf or a volunteer supernatural present.
THE EARTH DAY CELEBRATIONS:
Tumblr media
The signal the end of the season of magical creature migrations, the elves have organised a party on the last weekend of the month. This party will take place in-game from Apr 29 - Apr 30. It is a full 24hr party that starts in the morning of Apr 29 and ends the next morning.
Tumblr media
THE MAGICAL SPACES:
Also held in Vievecor City Park, this Earth Day celebration is the one time in the year when the elves have opened up the park and it’s magical spaces for the rest of the supernatural community to explore. These spaces that are filled with all sorts of magical flora and even some magical fauna are kept hidden the rest of the year to stop any unsuspecting humans from stumbling across them.
(OOC: Players are welcome to have their characters explore these spaces where they can stumble across fairies, pixies, gnomes and wood nymphs. Elf characters who tend to this park will know these creatures very well.)
Tumblr media
THE WINDING FOREST PATH:
This circular pathway is one that the elves have cultivated through the park with the help of the Dumisani Coven. As long as you are on this path, it remains at the time when the sun is just setting and the forest around you is bathed in rainbow colours. Through the trees to on both sides of the path, the skies are in the perfect state of twilight. The Milky Way can be seen scattered across the sky. This makes the path a beautiful and romantic setting for anyone looking for a little privacy. If they are lucky, party-goers might even be able to spot Vievecor City Park’s resident pair of unicorns wandering through the trees.
To make sure that party-goers do not stray too far from the path, there are elves stationed along the way to help anyone find their way.
(OOC: Players who are taking this path will feel a sense of calm when going through. If they stray from the path and get lost, they are welcome to have a unicorn guide them back to safety.)
MEET THE DRAGONS:
After much persuading by the elves, there are two dragons who have decided to stay a little longer for anyone in the supernatural community to meet.
Tumblr media
The first of them is a gold-coloured Western dragon named Argen. She is young, just about 300 years of age, sits at about 32 feet / 10 metres long and is one of the friendlier ones of her kind. Argen enjoys mingling with different supernatural species even if she is still very wary of humans. She is also tends of be more wary of vampires and demons. Party-goers who wish to meet her up close must bow upon approaching her to show respect and she will allow them close once she leans in and familiarises herself with their scent.
Tumblr media
The second dragon is an Eastern dragon called Yunlong. He is much older at 800 years of age and sits at around 98 feet / 30 metres. His name literally translates to Cloud Dragon and he is known to enjoy flying through the upper stratosphere on most days. His calm and patient demeanour will make it easier for party-goers to approach him but he can get mischievous by generating rain clouds over unsuspecting people. Yunlong has a more honed ability to sense darkness in individuals, be it emotions or magic and tends to be most wary of Underworld demons above the other demon sub-types.
(OOC: Players are welcome to have their characters meet these two dragons that we are officially introducing to the RP! Feel free to use the information in each dragon write-up to inform any threads and ask the mod if you have any questions!)
THE PARTY SPACE:
Tumblr media
The party space in Vievecor City park has been decorated with lights that have been strung across the trees. Hammocks and tents of all sorts of colours have also been hung up for party-goers to rest and relax and just immerse themselves in the beautiful nature around them.
Food and drink that are largely clean and nourishing like all sorts of vegetables, fruits and whole foods, and teas and honey wine have been provided for party-goers to enjoy.
All party-goers are also reminded not to litter and to pick up after themselves throughout the party as a way to respect the spaces they are enjoying.
RULES:
Our Earth Day Event will run from Apr 24th, 12pm EST to May 1st, 12pm EST. In-game, this takes place across the whole week with the party happening on the weekend from the morning of Apr 29th to the morning of Apr 30th. Players are free to choose whether to participate or not, but it is highly encouraged for everyone to do so. Characters who do not know of the supernatural world will have to sit this event out but they will not be penalised for low activity.
Once the event has begun, we ask players to only post starters which are related to it. Please tag all new starters with #vcearthday2023 and #vievecorcitystarter and @vievecorcitystarters. The open starter rules still apply!
We advise players to place prior threads on hold during our event week, however, this is not required.
Thank you for reading and HAVE FUN!

Empowering Local Voices: The Future of Community-led Regeneration in Scotland
Rethinking Regeneration: Community-led Development in Scotland Hello, dear followers! Today, I delve into a crucial aspect of urban planning and economic development—community-led regeneration projects in Scotland. This approach not only revitalises overlooked neighbourhoods but also empowers local communities, reinforcing the principles of economic freedom and self-determination. Recent years have seen the rise of community-led initiatives across Scotland, from local groups taking over unused public spaces to community ownership of essential services. These projects provide the dual benefits of improving local infrastructure and ensuring that developments are tailored to meet the real and expressed needs of the communities they serve. For instance, in Glasgow, local residents have transformed derelict areas into vibrant communal spaces, supporting local markets and social enterprises that breathe new life into the economy. Similarly, in the Highlands, community ownership of renewable energy resources has enabled local control over energy production, creating jobs and funding community projects. However, certain challenges need addressing to maximise the potential of these initiatives. There is often a shortage of initial capital, and not all communities have the same level of access to the necessary resources or expertise. Effective partnerships between communities, governmental bodies, and private investors can bridge these gaps. By facilitating access to funding, providing educational resources, and offering expert guidance, these partnerships can enhance the scale and impact of community-led projects. As we consider the future of urban regeneration in Scotland, it's crucial to support policies and frameworks that foster community empowerment. Encouraging the engagement of local residents in the planning and implementation process ensures that developments are sustainable and aligned with local needs. I welcome your thoughts on this subject. How can Scotland further support and expand community-led regeneration projects? Have you seen effective examples in your area that could be replicated elsewhere? Your insights are invaluable as we discuss how to harness local potential to fuel economic regeneration and sustainable development. Please share your thoughts in the comments below! Stay engaged and proactive in shaping the future of our communities. 7 Land Investment Trends to Watch
Tumblr media
Real estate is one of the best types of investment you can make. Investing in land for sale can be a good idea, whether it is commercial property for sale, coconut land for sale in Sri Lanka, or even waterfront lands where you can build villas or holiday homes:
Appreciation Potential: Land tends to appreciate in value over time, especially if it is in a growing area or has development potential.
Tangible Asset: Unlike stocks or bonds, land is a physical asset that you can see and touch. This can make it feel more secure for many investors.
Limited Supply: Land is a finite resource, and its availability is limited. As populations grow and urban areas expand, the value of land can increase.
Low Maintenance: Unlike rental properties, land typically requires little to no maintenance. There are no tenants to manage or structures to upkeep.
Income Potential: Land can be leased for agricultural purposes, used for resource extraction, or developed for commercial or residential use, generating potential income streams.
Diversification: Investing in land can diversify an investment portfolio, spreading risk across different asset types.
Tax Benefits: In some regions, owning land can offer tax advantages, such as deductions for property taxes or exemptions from certain capital gains taxes if the land is held long-term.
Development Opportunities: Land can be developed or improved, potentially increasing its value. This could include constructing buildings, subdividing into smaller parcels, or rezoning for different uses.
However, it is also important to consider the risks, such as market fluctuations, changes in zoning laws, and the potential for land to remain undeveloped or unproductive.
What are seven land investment trends to watch out for?
Here are seven land investment trends to watch:
Urbanisation and Suburban Growth: As cities become more crowded, there is increasing demand for land in suburban and rural areas. This trend is driven by people seeking more space, better quality of life, and lower living costs.
Renewable Energy Projects: The growth of renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind farms, is creating new opportunities for land investment. Investors are increasingly buying land to lease for these projects.
Sustainable and Green Development: There is a growing emphasis on sustainable development and environmental conservation. Land investments that focus on eco-friendly practices, such as conservation easements or green building initiatives, are gaining traction.
Technology and Data Centres: With the rise of digital technology and data consumption, there is increasing demand for land to build data centres and tech hubs. This trend is likely to continue as technology infrastructure expands.
Recreational and Lifestyle Properties: There is growing interest in land for recreational use, such as hunting, fishing, and vacation homes. People are investing in land that offers lifestyle benefits and leisure activities.
Agricultural Innovation: Advances in agricultural technology and the growing demand for locally sourced food are driving interest in farmland. Investors are looking at opportunities in precision farming, organic agriculture, and vertical farming.
Urban Redevelopment and Revitalisation: In many cities, there is a focus on redeveloping and revitalising underutilised urban areas. Investors are buying land in these areas for redevelopment projects, such as mixed-use developments or affordable housing.
These trends reflect broader shifts in societal needs, technological advancements, and environmental considerations, shaping the future of land investment.
How to choose a good property for investment
Choosing a good property for investment involves careful evaluation and strategic planning. Here are key factors to consider:
Location: The location of the property is crucial. Look for areas with strong economic growth, good infrastructure, and amenities. Proximity to schools, public transport, and employment centres can enhance a property’s value.
Market Trends: Research current and future market trends in the area. Consider factors such as property price trends, rental yields, and demand for properties in the region.
Property Condition: Assess the condition of the property. A well-maintained property will likely require fewer repairs and maintenance, reducing initial costs and potential headaches.
Financial Analysis: Calculate the potential return on investment (ROI). Consider purchase price, financing costs, expected rental income, and ongoing expenses. A positive cash flow and reasonable ROI are key indicators of a good investment.
Future Growth Potential: Evaluate the potential for future growth in the area. Look for planned infrastructure projects, new developments, or zoning changes that could increase property value over time.
Tenant Demand: If investing in rental property, assess the demand for rental units in the area. High tenant demand can reduce vacancy rates and increase rental income.
Legal and Zoning Issues: Check for any legal or zoning issues that could affect the property’s use or value. Ensure the property complies with local regulations and zoning laws.
Neighbourhood Analysis: Research the neighbourhood’s safety, demographic trends, and overall appeal. A desirable neighbourhood often attracts better tenants and maintains property value.
Investment Strategy: Align the property with your investment strategy. Whether you are looking for long-term appreciation, rental income, or short-term gains, choose a property that fits your goals.
Expert Advice: Consider seeking advice from real estate professionals, such as agents, brokers, or property managers, who can provide insights and help you make an informed decision.
Thorough research and due diligence are essential to making a sound investment decision and achieving success in real estate investing.

well end of an era but with an opportunity.
Just drove past my bus stop on the way to work and couldn't see the sunflower so I think they've replaced the panel.
Which while sad means a backup plan can cine to fruition. If they replace panels because of grafitti it means I can make then update the bus stops.
I didn't notice the rest but if the back panel is the same that's gonna be next and absolutely some on the ground where there's been a hole for ages.
Guess it's a good thing I have spray paint for cosplay stuff
Reblogged to show edit: Driving past today I noticed the windows look really clear so I think they've actually replaced the entire thing.
It just seems to be that one though not the one further up the road so plan continues there.

The Dynamics of Retail Demolition in Sydney: A Comprehensive Overview
Tumblr media
Retail demolition in Sydney is a critical process that enables the transformation and revitalisation of urban spaces. As the city evolves, retail spaces must adapt to changing consumer demands, market trends, and urban development plans. This article explores the various aspects of retail demolition in Sydney, highlighting its importance, challenges, and the factors that drive its execution.
The Importance of Retail Demolition
Retail demolition plays a crucial role in urban development and regeneration. As consumer preferences shift and new business models emerge, outdated retail spaces must be dismantled to make way for modern, efficient, and attractive establishments. Demolition is often the first step in redevelopment projects that aim to rejuvenate shopping precincts, enhance the urban environment, and boost the local economy. By clearing old structures, developers can create space for new retail concepts, mixed-use developments, and improved public amenities.
Drivers of Retail Demolition
Several factors drive the need for retail demolition in Sydney:
Urban Renewal Projects:
Sydney's urban renewal initiatives often necessitate the demolition of existing retail buildings. These projects aim to revitalise ageing areas, improve infrastructure, and create vibrant, sustainable communities.
Market Demands:
Changing consumer behaviour, such as the rise of e-commerce and experiential retail, requires adaptable and modern retail spaces. Demolition allows for the construction of innovative retail environments that meet contemporary needs.
Structural Integrity:
Older retail buildings may suffer from structural issues, making them unsafe or unsuitable for current use. Demolition is often the most practical solution to address these concerns and ensure public safety.
Economic Considerations:
In some cases, it is more cost-effective to demolish and rebuild rather than renovate existing structures. This approach can maximise the financial returns on new developments.
Best Practices in Retail Demolition
Successful retail demolition projects in Sydney follow several best practices:
Comprehensive Planning:
Thorough planning is essential to address all aspects of the demolition process, from initial assessments to final site clearance. Detailed project plans help anticipate challenges and streamline operations.
Safety Measures:
Prioritising safety is paramount in demolition projects. Implementing rigorous safety protocols, providing adequate training, and using appropriate protective equipment are key to preventing accidents and injuries.
Environmental Responsibility:
Adopting environmentally responsible practices, such as recycling demolition waste and reducing emissions, aligns with Sydney's sustainability goals. Green demolition techniques help minimise the environmental footprint of projects.
Stakeholder Engagement:
Engaging with stakeholders, including local communities, businesses, and authorities, fosters transparency and cooperation. Regular updates and open communication help manage expectations and address concerns.
Innovative Techniques:
Utilising advanced demolition techniques and equipment can enhance efficiency and safety. Methods such as selective demolition, controlled implosions, and robotic demolition are increasingly employed to tackle complex projects.
Retail demolition in Sydney is a complex but essential process that drives urban renewal and adapts to evolving market demands. By addressing challenges through comprehensive planning, safety measures, environmental responsibility, and innovative techniques, developers can successfully navigate the dynamics of retail demolition. As Sydney continues to grow and transform, the careful execution of retail demolition projects will play a pivotal role in shaping the city's future.

Project Title: The North Within The North
Project Location:  Luleå, Northern Sweden
Beatrice Rogojan, MSA stage 5 Sustainability Prize: Commended 2024
This Design Thesis explores the viability of implementing an adaptive-reuse strategy to address the unsustainable consequences of Luleå’s densely commercialized urban core, especially in its Arctic setting. The objective is to transition its consumer-driven urban activity into a community-centered one by repurposing one of its most valuable yet declining assets: the first indoor shopping mall in the world, ‘Shopping’, designed by Ralph Erskine.
While researching the history and failures of Luleå’s urban core parallel to the Shopping’’ decline, this project developed into an antithesis to consumerist-focused practices, which alienated the sense of local community and culture in Luleå. Furthermore, this thesis looks at enabling an anti-consumerist approach on all design levels, thus repurposing an existing valuable asset, yet a declining shopping mall emphasises on adopting sustainable design practices by prioritising mindful resourcefulness and advocating for fewer new constructions in the built environment.
Hence, this project serves as a provocative call to action, urging the construction industry professionals to build less and use existing resources more across all facets of design while actively involving themselves with local communities and contextual social and cultural nuances for a deeper understanding of the local needs.
Developing an adaptive-reuse strategy for Ralph Erskine’s building is the most successful facet of this thesis. It focuses on revitalising the building’s lost architectural character while integrating a new layer of contemporary architecture that brings value to its existing fabric and aims to benefit future generations.  This thesis, more or less like forensic architecture, investigates the historical architectural layers of the building and embraces its architectural qualities, however it rejects the inappropriate renovations done over the years in Erskine’s Shopping. The proposed design strategy retains original elements while the new additions aim to accentuate them even more.
The most resolved aspect of this thesis is the reconstructions proposed in line with Erskine’s vision and bioclimatic design strategy, aiming to bring back the lost heritage through innovative construction methods and materials with three different types of 3D printing processes. The emphasis on considering life cycle assessment throughout the design process is evident through the material choices, fostering an anti-consumerist mindset that values reusability, recycling, and efficiency.
Furthermore, the new layout of the floorplans successfully brings back Erskine’s utopic idea of a city within a city, where a generous area is dedicated to “informal spaces” where the local community can genuinely use the building as an indoor public square or indoor street for conversation and interaction, which is a crucial design need in a harsh climate such as Luleå’s.
In conclusion, this project serves as a provocative call to action, urging the construction industry professionals to build less and use existing resources more across all facets of design while actively involving themselves with local communities and contextual social and cultural nuances for a deeper understanding of the local needs
