Composer Lan Wangi has escaped to the countryside after talking back to the elders of his company. He is, as far as they are concerned, in seclusion, reflecting on his actions.

He introduces himself as Lan Zhan to his unexpected roommate, a YouTuber known as "Yiling Laozu". The YouTuber is Wei Ying, a young man who came to the village five years in the past and stayed. Lan Wangi came to this village specifically because of those videos, hoping to find the peace they have given him.

【那夏天的我們】a stroke of fate meanders through a lazy summer in what the author describes (rightly so) as a Barakamon AU in the tags. There are village children and brothers to deal with. Wei Ying aids those working in the village and records and posts videos on village life for YouTube. Lan Zhan tries to break through whatever block has been keeping him from writing new music.

Both men have pasts they are running away from. Both have futures they are working towards. All this to the background of music, videos, food, fishing, children being children … and themes of memories past and present.

The story has the charm that I found in Barakamon, although readers do not have to know anything about the manga or anime to appreciate the slice of life.

He’s sentenced me to be mortal again until the end of the next epoch. Most of my clerics ran off to devote themselves to Ovirin instead. I only have one left here, so I’m counting on you more than ever.

Gitotzer’s been punished too, simply for escorting Kyetki safely to the mountain, so if he were remotely in touch with reality, he’d appreciate what I did for his sister. Maybe he’d even feel bad about posting himself inside my workshop and hovering over my shoulder to spy on me for his father while I’m dictating this letter.
