Rollerskating in Rockhampton Queensland, ca. 1915. From collection M946 Brett and Burley Family Records (LINK)
At the Library we love to look at seemingly innocuous photographs like this one and tease out some of those details - like the gentleman doing a showy turn on his skates, and the sign prohibiting fast skating in the rink!

the bananagate is kind of funny to me from usamericans because like you could grow bananas in the usa. you don;t need to ruin central american countries - it's only cause it's more profitable and allows for year round consistent supply.
literally all bananas in australia are australian grown (because of biosecurity laws, if we could import from the global south, we likely would), and the way people talk about it you'd think that means australian bananas must be 11 dollars each (they're 4~5 AUD per kg typically)

It is always interesting to reflect on the way humans respond to tragedies, of all their shapes and sizes, and few such tragedies have had such global, lasting influence as the Titanic. These clippings, preserved in the Rawson Family Archive (HERE), demonstrate the impact of the tragedy on an international scale. The articles detail the events as they were revealed by survivors, the scale of the event, the heroism and sacrifice of those on board, and the ways in which Queensland locals publicly mourned this event.

are you indigenous?
short answer: no.
long answer: the family lore says yes (on both sides. since all sides of my family were rural working class) but since relationships with indigenous ppl, consensual or otherwise 😑, were kept very hush hush back in the day and also due to the stolen generations, we dont know any more than word of mouth passed down through generations. many family members (including my brother and my pops family) look and have often been mistaken for indigenous, and my family often takes this to mean there is some truth to the family legend. if i am mob, however, i dont know who my mob is, and i dont know how id even go about finding them. i am white anglo-celtic australian. rural catholics (aka poor settlers) and family lore, to me, is not enough to justify taking up indigenous spaces. so when im filling out forms and they ask, i always answer "neither indigenous nor torres strait islander" even though the real answer is a more complex "i dont know and i dont know how id find out"
