thank you so much! ok, apologies if some of these questions seem basic - again, i've tried to understand as much as i can by searching online. SO, a few that come to mind are: i guess different frequencies are used for ham radio communication vs. broadcast. lots of sources emphasize that there's a big difference between ham radio and broadcast. is there no overlap between the two, like, technically or socially? i know you're not supposed to use amateur radio for commercial purposes, so a lot of the radio events, broadcasts, activities, etc that i'm familiar with from listening to commercial radio probably aren't options.
another question: what are nets like?
on a slightly different note: if a person is listening in on an amateur radio conversation, but not speaking, can others on that frequency tell they're listening? how?
Aaalright, I had to take a break because of painful headaches and also meetings with my ARES group (ARES stands for Amateur Radio Emergency Service, for those of y'all who aren't aware).
Please notice: I came into amateur radio through ARES, so my personal experiences with amateur radio are colored through that lens.
Also, I apologize for this whole ass essay.
Ham Radio VS Broadcast
Technically: There is no difference. In an unlocked radio (which is becoming a rare hot ticket item), you can literally go from listening to FM radio to scooting over a few numbers and talking to Brazil or Portugal.
Legally: We're not supposed to do that because the FCC says not to, and the FCC is not a government entity to take lightly. Even the Joker would fear the FCC. We have to behave ourselves. We're not even allowed to swear on the air waves :(
Socially: Possibly the biggest divide BECAUSE of the legal part. With the exception of people who work for professional radio stations who also happen to have amateur radio licenses, there's no overlap between us.
Amateur Radio Nets
Counterquestion: What sort of net are we talking about? A roundtable or ragchew? A weekly ARES net? An emergency net? Considering how niche emergency service-based amateur radio is, I'm going to assume you mean a roundtable, but feel free to come back for the other two that I know more about.
There are two ways to run a roundtable or ragchew net:
Everyone who's involved will check in at the beginning of the net, and the net control operator will direct it around the circle in order.
Everyone will check in at one point during the net and give their input. They will not be revisited unless they purposefully check back in, which is usually done by transmitting and saying the word "recheck".
During any and all nets, anyone actively participating MUST transmit their callsign and identify themselves every ten minutes from when they first check in. The exception is during emergency nets, but we won't get into that just yet. Typically, all you have to do is give your callsign across the radio again.
If you have questions about callsigns specifically, feel free to ask about those, because there's some nuance~ there that most people miss.
Lurkers
Unless they have actively checked in on a net, you cannot tell who's listening on the radio. We always assume that someone is listening, and that that someone will turn and report us to the FCC immediately if we mess something up.
So we won't be treating radio transmissions as some secret alternative to phone calls or text messages. Sorry to all would-be amateur radio spies out there.
Hopefully this answered some of your questions! Feel free to ask any more as needed!
~Jasper

HOT New Album Fridays: Benny Sings - Young Hearts
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Benny Sings has us bouncing in our chairs with GLEE! Young Hearts is a fresh, new, and exciting pop album by an artist that you can tell truly loves what he does. He sings with passion, vigor and playfulness on Young Hearts and leaves our hearts pumping with joy. The album touches on 70s pop, soft pop, and sounds like a mix between Paul McCartney and Joe Jackson. We are thrilled to share this monumental new pop album with you. Check out the album below and full press release: Full Press Release: Today marks the release of Benny Sings' new album Young Hearts, via Stones Throw Records. The album features his recently released bossa nova-inspired track, "Pyjamas," which includes vocals from Remi Wolf and a music video directed by her. The two recently spoke to each other for The Talkhouse, which described Benny as "making the sort of breezy songs that easily get stuck in your head." For Benny Sings, making music isn’t just an art; he sees it as one of the lines of work that make the world go round. He says, “I wanted to be like a baker, I wanted to be like a paver. Everybody works hard to make the world a better place, and I would do the songs.” For nearly twenty years he’s been perfecting that work, culminating in Young Hearts. Young Hearts is Benny Sings’ first record made with a single producer — beatmaker-to-the-stars Kenny Beats. The pair connected over DM, after which Kenny invited Benny to work from his home studio in L.A., where they would jam and write during the day. They’d riff off each other, sharing stories, melodies, and adlibs with collaborators Kenny invited over, relaxing into the anything-goes vibe. Whereas Benny’s always written autobiographical songs, on Young Hearts he looks outward, creating a fictional cast of lovable losers – the kind of bumbling, luckless eccentrics you might find on a lost Steely Dan record. On “Pyjamas” with Remi Wolf, Benny sings as a guy who’d rather watch a documentary than jump into the sack; “The World” captures a '70s nostalgic feel, about “living it up” wherever you are; “The Only One” describes an obsessive romantic who daydreams about a woman unaware of his existence, and the title track imagines a pair of young lovers-turned-addicts chasing pleasure through drugs over an FM-radio piano line. “The antihero is at the heart of my music,” Benny explains. He has enormous empathy for these hapless folks — because he sees himself as one. “It’s who I am at the core. Soft. I hope that someone can listen to these songs and think, ‘I’m not Superman but maybe I can still save the day’.” Benny Sings Tour Dates: March 24 - Roeselare, Belgium @ TRAX March 25 - Amsterdam, Netherlands @ Paradiso March 28 - London, UK @ KOKO March 29 - Paris, France @ Le Trianon March 30 - Berlin, Germany @ Lido April 5 - Rotterdam, Netherlands @ Maassilo April 6 - Utrecht, Netherlands @ Tivoli Vredenburg June 9 - Søndermarken, Denmark @ Syd For Solen July 9 - Rotterdam, Netherlands @ North Sea Jazz Festival July 14 - Meco Sesimbra, Portugal @ Super Bock Super Rock Read the full article

SPANISH RADIOS STUDY
I’ve always been curious about the type of “international” (mainly from USA) music that’s listened in different countries, like here in Spain, for example, many people don’t know who some of the most well-known artists in the USA are, like Drake or Kendrick Lamar. So I decided to do this study with the main Spanish radio stations so you can see what songs are we listening right now, and to compare it with the ones that sound in your countries (feel free to make the study yourself so we can compare more!!!)
So, what I did was listen 1 h to each of the main 4 Spanish radio stations (Los 40, Cadena 100, KISS FM & Europa FM) and noted all the songs. We’ll then see at the end if any artists sound in more than one radio station, which would mean they are popular here, and how much are they known in their home country. So, let’s start!
LOS 40 (11:15-12:15 h):
So, this radio station is kinda like the “Billboard Hot 100″ of Spain, they have a list of the Top 40 songs that they change every week and stuff. It’s generally targeted towards a younger demographic.
Nº of songs in Spanish: 6
- “Drive By”, from Train [USA]
- “This Girl”, from Kungs vs Cookin’ on 3 Burners [Australia]
- “Let Me Down Slowly”, from Alec Benjamin, Alessia Cara [USA, Canada]
- “Thrift Shop”, from Macklemore & Ryan Lewis [USA]
- “Bad Guy”, from Billie Eilish [USA]
- “Don’t You Worry Child”, from Swedish House Mafia [Sweden]
- “High Hopes”, from Panic! At the Disco [USA]
- “Give Me Everything Tonight”, from Pitbull, Afrojack, Ne-Yo  [USA, The Netherlands]
- “Lush Life”, from Zara Larsson [Sweden]
- “Señorita”, from Camila Cabello, Shawn Mendes [USA]
- “Feel It Still”, from Portugal. The Man [USA]
- “Price Tag”, from Jessie J [UK]
CADENA 100 (12:16 - 13:16 h):
This is kinda like the most “vanilla”, standard radio, aimed more towards middle age people, with a bit of everything.
Nº of songs in Spanish: 6
- “Solo”, from Demi Lovato [USA]
- “Blurred Lines”, from Robin Thicke, Pharrell Williams [USA]
- “Someone Like You”, from Adele [UK]
- “Get the Party Started”, from P!NK [USA]
- “Satellites”, from September [Sweden]
- “Smooth”, from Santana [USA]
- “Don’t Be So Shy”, from Imany [France]
- “Would I lie to you?”, from Charles & Eddie [USA]
- “Only Girl (In the World)”, from Rihanna [Barbados]
- “Girls Like You”, from Maroon 5 [USA]
- “How deep is your love”, from Calvin Harris [UK]
KISS FM (13:17 - 14:17):
This is a radio station focused on songs from the 80s to nowadays, it has an oldie vibe, and it’s my favourite of the four tbh.
Nº of songs in Spanish: 0
- “I Want it That Way”, from Backstreet Boys [USA]
- “Summer of ‘69″, from Bryan Adams [Canada]
- “One Day In Your Life”, from Anastacia [USA]
- “Can’t Feel My Face”, from The Weeknd [Canada]
- “You Got It”, from Roy Orbison [USA]
- “What’s Love Got To Do With It”, from Tina Turner [USA]
- “Don’t Speak”, from No Doubt [USA]
- “Enola Gay”, from Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark [UK]
- “Back to Black”, from Amy Winehouse [UK]
- “Kiss”, from Prince & The Revolution [USA]
- “Fresh”, from Kool & The Gang [USA]
- “Bad”, from Michael Jackson [USA]
- “Animal Instinct”, from The Cranberries [Ireland]
- “This Love”, from Maroon 5  [USA]
- “Englishman In New York”, from Sting [UK]
- “Baby Can I Hold You”, from Tracy Chapman [USA]
EUROPA FM (15:29 - 16:29):
This is kinda the opposite of KISS FM, it only plays songs from the 00′s and beyond.
Nº of Spanish songs: 2
- “A Thousand Miles”, from Vanessa Carlton [USA]
- “High Hopes”, from Panic! At the Disco [USA]
- “Hey Mama”, from David Guetta [France]
- “Be Alright”, from Dean Lewis [Australia]
- “Sugar”, from Maroon 5 [USA]
- “Just the Way you Are”, from Bruno Mars [USA]
- “See You Again”, from Whiz Khalifa, Charlie Puth [USA]
- “Kiss And Make Up”, from Dua Lipa, BLACKPINK [UK, South Korea]
- “Paparazzi”, from Lady Gaga [USA]
- “Try”, from P!NK [USA]
- “Nothing Breaks Like a Heart”, from Mark Ronson, Miley Cyrus [USA]
- “Get To Know Me”, from Anitta, Alesso [Brazil, Sweden]
- “Sax”, from Fleur East [UK]
- “Sick and Tired”, from Anastacia [USA]
- “Obsessed”, from Dynoro x Ina Wroldsen [Lithuania, Norway]
So, the final results would be that the most listened artists here are: Maroon 5 (3 songs), P!NK (3 songs), Panic! At the Disco (2 songs) & Anastacia (2 songs). Makes sense for me (maybe P!ATD not so much, they’ve only aired “High Hopes” :( ), and I like all of them except for Maroon 5, so that’s great!
Also, I’m truly shocked seeing so many Swedish artists here. Wow.
Hope you liked the post, and please, feel free to do your own studies and / or comment on the results of this one to compare them!!! And also, let me know if there are any Spanish artists that receive regular radioplay from where you are, I would like to know that!
