Note
could you do a rafe imagine where reader is a pouge and she’s working at the country club as a server or as a bust gal and kelce says something about her but rafe secretly likes the reader and he defends her and gets pissed at his friends for talking bad about her or saying something degrading or ojectifyinfg about her and then the reader finds out rafe defended her from topper ?? Bc topper is secretly kind (apart from the fire tbh) and reader confronts rafe about why he defended her
pairing. rafe cameron x fem!reader
warnings. sooo much fluff, degrading language towards women, a fight (kinda), out of character top/rafe, lmk if i missed anything!
summary. rafe has a crush on you and topper makes it his top priority to get you two together after you confess your feelings, too.

You were exhausted at this time of day and you just wanted to go home and rest. Your eyes were heavy and your feet hurt from these stupid heels the club makes you wear. You had one last table before you could clock out; you could already feel the warm bath you were going to draw tonight.
Until you saw who you were serving; Kook royalty themselves. Rafe, Topper, Kelce and a few guys you don't recall the names of. You prepared yourself for the longest hour serving these boys.
You walked up to them, a big smile on your lips. If you were going to serve some snotty Kooks you might as well get a good tip. "Hey, um. I'm Y/N, and I'm your waiter for tonight. Can I get you started with any drinks?"
You handed out the menus and you could already feel their stares at your body and face, making you feel a tiny bit self conscious. In the corner of your eye you saw Kelce turn to one of the boys to whisper something and he immediately turned red before letting out a chuckle.
You saw Topper and Rafe make eye contact before Rafe rolled his eyes, making Topper sigh.
"Sure, for me, I don't know about the others though." Topper nodded politely as you smiled.
"Yeah, I'm super thirsty." One of the boys had commented as the whole table (minus Topper and Rafe) erupted in laughter. You were disgusted and honestly disappointed, I mean, how low could these jerks get?
Rafe cleared his throat and the whole table became quiet once again. "Me and Top are going to get some Old-Fashion's. I don't know about the others."
"Make that three more." Kelce added and you nodded politely, jotting it down quickly on the notepad.
"Okay, I will be right back with your drinks. Take a look at the menus, alright?" You walked away with another big smile and as you turned, it immediately dropped.
You didn't necessarily hate Kooks; well, not to the extent of JJ or Pope. You could honestly stand them; sure, they made you uncomfortably sometimes but at least at the end of it, you have a good tip.
"Take a look at those menus, more like take a look at that ass!" The boy had said and Kelce and other one let out another laugh. Rafe couldn't stand it.
The jokes weren't funny and were low blows, they were some of the worst jokes he'd heard in months. It was stupid. Rafe held in all his anger because he didn't want to cause a scene, especially here or in front of you.
He's been trying to make a move on you for months; giving extra tips, complimenting you, asking if you could help with the golf cart. And now all his hard was going down the drain because you're going to think he's shallow and idiotic because of his 'friends.'
The only person he actually liked right now was Topper and that's saying a lot. He felt bad for you as well. Rafe didn't really feel empathetic towards anyone but seeing you put on a fake smile and nod off the joke like it was nothing reminded him of someone.
"God what I would do to take her to bed." One of the boys sighed as the others agreed. Rafe bit his tongue as they continued.
"I'm sure she would," Kelce took a drink of his water. "If you tipped her enough."
"You're right, she's a Pogue. I'm sure she needs the money."
Rafe was disgusted. Is this really what they thought about? "Shut the fuck up, dude. That's not funny."
The table went quiet as the guy turned to Rafe. "What the fuck is your problem man, you've been in a bitch mood ever since we came in here. I mean, come on, it's a fucking joke."
"A joke? You call that a fucking joke?" Rafe started raising his voice. "You're the fucking joke here, dude. Who the fuck says that shit? Especially while she's literally over there."
Topper nodded. "Yeah, have some decency. Y/N's actually so sweet."
The two boys looked at each other before laughing. "Oh I see what's goin on here. You two are acting like you're all above this, above us, so she can see how gentleman-ly you are and let you tag team her, huh?"
"Not everything is about sex, dude. Maybe we actually think she's nice and a human being that deserves a little respect. She's, y'know, a living breathing human with thoughts in case you've forgot." Rafe was seeing red and he was about to throw a punch before Topper kicked his leg.
"What, dude? It's true." Rafe looked at Topper before he sighed.
"Let's just finish the drinks and then we can go, alright?" Topper was trying to calm things down and Rafe took a deep breath before nodding.
You had come back with all the drinks on a platter. You felt the shift in energy, it was a lot more tense now than it was. "Alright, have you guys figured out what you guys wanted to eat?"
You passed out the drinks.
"That would be it, can you uh, get the check please?" Rafe's voice was much softer and politer than usual and you nodded. You appreciated the manners; you don't see a lot of that in the country club.
"Okay, sure. I will be right back with the check." You smiled at him and his cheeks turned a little red as he turned away. Topper noticed this and was a little confused.
Rafe had never mentioned liking you in anyway. He was now wondering if he had just started liking you or if this was something that's been happening for a while now.
"Okay, Kelce, how much would you pay me if I went up to her and asked her out on a date?"
"Nothing, dude. You'll be getting the award, why would I have to pay?" Kelce responded, drinking a little of his drink.
Rafe flared his nostrils as he kept in his anger once again. He didn't want to blow up again, people were already staring.
"Dude, you won't do it." The other guy laughed. "You're a fuckin pussy."
"There's no way she'll say yes." Kelce added.
The other guy rolled his eyes, "How much do you wanna bet?"
Kelce laughed, "100$ easy, dude."
He laughed, "Okay, I'll be a 100$ richer."
"You're definitely going to lose that 100, man."
You came back and put the check down with a small smile. "Is that all boys?"
"Yes." Rafe quickly said, taking the check and putting his card in. The others exchanged looks. Before you could away, the boy had started to say something.
"Y/N, right?" He looked at your nametag then to your low V-cut shirt before looking back at your face. "I was wondering if you could let me take you out later this week, maybe... Saturday? I'm havin a big party, I'd just love for you to come."
Rafe was angry he felt like his eyes were going to bulge out of his eyelids as he stared daggers at the guy.
You stood there, a bit shocked. There were a few seconds before you could respond. "I would love to. But uh, I'm already dating someone."
"Really?" Topper looked confused, you'd never mentioned one. You glared down at him before smiling and nodding. Rafe felt like his world had come crashing down. You had a boyfriend?
"Yup, JJ. Two months!" You said dramatically. "Sorry... About that."
The guy looked pissed, turning away from you. "You weren't even that pretty anyway." He muttered.
Your eyes widened and immediately took that as your que to leave, walking away. "Okay.."
Rafe quickly got up after you, taking out his wallet and taking out a 20$, handing it to you.
Your eyes had widened at how much he was tipping. "Whoa, are you sure?"
"Very. My friends were douches to you and I apologize. I don't even know the other two dudes' names."
You laughed, the first real genuine laugh you've had all day. It was a like breathe of fresh air. "Me neither, but I can't take this, that's so much." You pushed away the money.
He rolled his eyes. "Yes, you can." He put it in the pocket in your shirt before sighing. "Enjoy the rest of your night."
He walked away to the rest of his friends and you smiled at the nice gesture. Rafe, despite the opinion of your friends, was actually kinda sweet. I mean, he was sure as hell better than the rest of his friends (minus Topper).
"Dude, that took you long enough." You heard one of them groan.
"Shut up." You heard Rafe reply as you smiled to yourself. You immediately shook away the smile, sighing. Why was the Kook prince making you smile? Wow, you were in desperate need of a bath and a good meal, 8 hour shifts aren't your strong suit.
--
You were surprised and confused at Topper's words.
"Yeah, he was like, genuinely pissed. I've never seen him that mad and that's saying a lot."
Your eyebrows were furrowed, "Wait, wait. So he defended me?"
Topper looked at you like it was the most obvious thing of all. "That's what I've been saying for the last half an hour, have you been listening?"
You rolled your eyes at Topper's unnecessary sassiness, "Yes, Top, it's just been really hard to process."
"What's hard about it? Rafe has literally never had a soft spot for anyone except Wheeizie, like ever. And he's rich. He can spoil you and you're literally set for life-"
"Whoa, okay." You started laughing. "Let's not go that far. I am not marrying Rafe Cameron." ok girl...
"Okay but think about it." He smiled. "We could be like kinda related. If Sarah marries me... or if Rafe considers me a best friend, I could be like your brother-in-law."
You started laughing harder, "Sarah's not marrying you."
He didn't look too amused by that. "Okay, shut up, seriously. Rafe likes you."
The more you imagined his face and his smile, his dad outfits and the way he literally is an asshole to everyone except you, the more hot your face felt.
Topper smiled as he playfully pushed your shoulder making you laugh. "He's cute."
"Cute? Don't call say that to his face, he'll get all flustered and then roll his eyes."
You already imagine his face, making you laugh a little harder. "Okay, okay. If... if I were to like him back, how would I approach him?"
Topper sighed, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. "Okay, uh. Maybe just talk to him and flirt before he asks you out."
"That's so obvious-"
"He tipped you a 20 last night and you're worried you're making it obvious? Are you serious?"
You rolled your eyes. You reminded yourself to talk to Topper about his attitude problem later because it's getting a bit much. "Okay. Fine. I will."
--
Other than being a waitress at the country club, some days they put you on the Beverage Cart duty. It was probably because they were short in staff that day but honestly you didn't mind. You'd rather be out on the golf course then cooped up in the restaurant. You also get double the tips than you would inside.
Plus, you had a cute golf outfit on with the cute visor; you felt like a true Kook.
As you were going around, selling drinks, you saw Topper and Rafe. Of course they were going to the club today; it was nice Saturday afternoon. You face palmed yourself. You already knew what Topper was going to do.
Topper saw you as well, a smirk forming on his lips. "Rafe, uh. Remember Y/N?"
Rafe felt himself blush at the mention of you. He shook it off, nodding. "Uh, yeah. Doesn't she work here?"
"Yep. Also, I was uh, talkin to her the other day and she called you cute."
Rafe's mouth flew open as he whipped his head towards Topper. "What?"
Topper smiled. "Yeah, she called you cute. Like, really cute. She was blushing and shit."
Rafe smiled and he didn't even feel it. "Wait, seriously?"
"Yeah, dude. And, oh! Speaking of the devil, there she is."
Rafe's eyes widened as he looked over at you and shook his head. "Oh, uh."
"I know you like her, man." Topper added as he looked to Rafe.
He shook his head. "No, I don't like her. I think she's cute."
Topper rolled his eyes. "And you blush around you, you stumble over your words, you tip her real good. You were practically on the floor kicking your feet in the air and blushing when I told you she said you were cute."
Rafe frowned at Topper's wording and before he could protest, he started pushing Rafe towards the cart. "Dude, hold on."
"Ask her out, man."
"Not now, dude, I've been plotting for months now, I can't just-"
"Dude, do you trust me?" Topper stopped and looked dead in the eyes.
"No." Rafe stated before Topper rolled his eyes for what seemed to be the fifty-th time that day.
"I don't care, now come on." He pushed Rafe towards the cart before grabbing the back of his collar, making him walk towards you. If this was any other situation, Rafe would've landed a punch to Top's jaw but he didn't wanna scare you off, so he kept his cool.
You stared the two as they approached the cart. They seemed too... normal. They were both smiling and you felt like they were plotting. You know for a fact that Topper is.
"Hey."
"Hi." They both said in union, making Rafe look back at Topper, furrowing his eyebrows.
"What can I get you two?" There was unnecessary awkwardness between the three of you as they both looked at each other.
"Two... sodas."
"Sodas?" You looked assumed. Were they 12?
Topper looked back at you. "Yes."
As you reached for the cooler, you heard Topper make an 'O' sound. You turned around.
"Oh shit. I forgot my wallet, I will be right back. Rafe, you stay here and get us the sodas, alright?"
Rafe looked back with his teeth gritted, a warning to Topper. "Topper."
He shrugged. "I'll be right back." He jogged away as you and Rafe made eye contact.
You knew that he knew what you had told Topper. And then, Rafe realized the same thing. He didn't know what Topper had told you but he just hopes it wasn't too embarrassing.
"Um. I never asked but um, what sodas do you want?"
"Ginger ale. I'm pretty Topper wants something girly like Diet Coke or something like that." Rafe mumbled the last part but you heard it. You let a horrendously loud laugh because you knew Topper would get a Diet Coke.
You suddenly felt embarrassed but it melted as you heard Rafe's small laugh as well. Butterflies filled your stomach as you heard him.
"Okay, then. One ginger ale and uh... a Diet Coke." You laughed a little after, making Rafe smile.
As you handed him the Ginger Ale, your hands touched and you felt like your face was on fire. You quickly pulled away.
"Hey, uh..." Rafe started. "Did Topper say anything about me?"
"In what way?"
"Um, I don't know... something involving you?" Rafe inquired as you smiled.
"Did he say anything to you about me?"
"Maybe." He dragged out the 'e' sound as you rolled your eyes at him playfully.
"Topper may have mentioned a few things about you. But they weren't bad. They were actually a little... admiring to hear."
He went red as he looked down at his feet. "Topper just loves to run his mouth."
You nodded in agreement. "Yeah. He definitely loves to gossip."
He laughed at your wording. "He said some stuff about you, too. It was... admiring, too."
Your cheeks had begun to hurt from smiling this hard and it'd been only a couple minutes.
"Okay." Rafe sighed. "Are we talking about the same thing-"
"Yes, we are. I think."
Rafe was going to have to push all his pride and ego just this time. "I think that you're really pretty... and if you're not with JJ, I'd love to take you out on a date."
You had forget he heard that part. "I'm not with JJ."
"Okay, then what do you say?"
"Yes, Rafe." You smiled at him and he swore his heart did a little flip at the sound of that.
"Okay," he sounded breathless.
You then turned in your cart, looking for a piece of paper and your pen. You found one and then wrote down your number. You turned back and handed it to him. "Text me and then we can sort out the details, okay?"
"Yeah, for sure."
Topper finally walked back, wallet in hand, a big grin on his tanned face. He looked down at the paper in his hand and gave Rafe a proud pat on the back.
"Here's your Diet Coke," you held in your laugh as you gave the drink to Topper. Rafe smiled back at you as Topper opened it quickly and took a big gulp.
"Thank you. I knew you'd know my favorite drink, Y/N." He took out a 5 dollar bill and gave it to you before winking and you felt yourself cringe at Topper as you took the 5.
He and Rafe walked away and you stood there, your heart beating fast as you watched them walk away.
"What'd I say? Trust me, Rafe, I promise it'll work out and look, it worked out!"
"Yeah, for once, dude."
"Oh, shut up."
You heard their argument and laughed to yourself, getting back into your cart to drive to the next course.

TwoShot
Dark! Alpha! Rafe x Omega! Kiara
Warnings: Just Light Manipulation
There will be two Chapters, and the second chapter will contain more unhinged elements.
Part 2
@sage1998c
Kie
2 Alpha’s and 3 Beta’s walk into a Chateau.
What you don’t know is that one of those Betas is a fraud.
The boys move ahead stepping into the well known Pogue residence, JJ placing John B in a headlock, playfully rubbing his noggin, as Pope, Sarah, and I follow closely behind, and if you couldn’t guess, I’m the imposter.
The cut in Outer Banks is full of late bloomers, who’s bodies take time to present a designation. It could be the poor living conditions or lack of resources, maybe even the abusive conditions that many of the family’s tend to go through.
But one thing is for sure, that when one person’s designation is eventually unveiled, everyone around them who is at least 16 years old, without a designation falls right behind, like a domino effect.
This is most definitely an outlier when it comes to the world of designations, yet rarely anyone, scientist, or government facility, comes around to study the phenomena.
Within this anomaly , our little group was no different. JJ, surprisingly enough, was the first to turn, as an Alpha, no less. I always thought if anyone were to be an Alpha it would be John B, but no, there he was turned right after JJ , presenting as a Beta. Next was Sarah, who to no surprise turned out to be an Alpha, then eventually Pope, exhibiting as a Beta.
I was the last to turn, expecting to be a Beta, like my friends, my family, and the majority of people in my community..
Imagine my surprise when I woke up the next morning drenched in sweat, and desperation, with a mom who knew exactly what to do. She kept me out of public for several weeks, telling my friends that I was ill, so she had enough time to get ‘special supplements’ to resist my Omega hormones, which had a double effect of presenting me as a Beta.
I didn’t understand, How this could happen, I always thought designations were in your genes. Then my mother explained her paternal great-grandmother was an Omega. The family never thought that the gene would resurface, at least not any time soon, because it was considered a recessive gene.
Sarah was the first to find out, sneaking in through my window to feed me some chicken soup. I made her promise not to tell anyone, for fear of how differently I might be treated if it did come out. She insisted that the boys would never treat me differently, but kept her promise nonetheless, understanding the plight of Omega’s in Outer Banks.
Omega’s weren’t necessarily treated terribly in Outer banks, but there’s most definitely  a difference in treatment compared to the other designations, a treatment neither my parents or I had an interest in taking part in, so we essentially did what we had to do.
And it worked, for a long while too.
I made it through highschool and my first two years of adulthood before shit hit the fan.
It’s important to note, that without Sarah by my side, I probably would have been found out as soon as I reentered society. You see Alpha’s react whenever and Omega is near, some can keep it under control, others need a little extra help to keep their hormones in check. It was a lot of trial and error trying to figure out the most optimal times to retake my supplements, and once I got the kinks out, I realized I had to take into account the irregularities of my daily life, regardless of how rare.  Those were much more difficult to keep track of because of how erratic my friend group was.
If I thought I would be out for 3 hrs there was a chance that I could be out for 7. If you took more than one supplement, in a specific time period you could end up with a kidney infection… or worse. The supplements only came in tablet form, so if I got wet, I had to hope that the water didn’t get into any baggies or pill boxes that I had them hiding in. And let's not forget the time we all ended up stuck on a neighboring island for over 12 hours, I barely made it back home in time, and was basically out of commission for 2 days.
But throughout all of this, I’d managed to anticipate and prepare for any and everything that came my way.
Except one.
The  Cameron household decided to hold a party for Wheezie, the youngest, being the first to present amongst her group of friends, and as an Alpha, how nice.
I only expected to be at the party for a few hours, but I did bring a supplement just in case my friends tried to convince me to stay a bit longer. I had no intention of getting in the water, and I only wanted to party and have a few drinks.
Sure enough though I did end up staying longer than I intended, but that was fine because I had my supplement available to me.
But I didn’t.
I went upstairs to Sarah’s room, where I had left my bag, I could feel the effects of the previous dose wearing off. From the tingling on the back of my neck to the goosebumps raising on my arms.
As I look through my bag, my supplements are nowhere to be found, I dump the contents onto Sarah’s bed as I sift through all my things and they’re nowhere to be found, I start to freak out.
I’m at a party filled to the brim with Alpha’s and Beta’s and maybe 2 other Omega’s hiding away in a closet somewhere, and my supplements are missing, and  I could’ve sworn I had them packed.
“Something wrong?”
I look up to find Rafe leaning against Sarah's doorway, arms crossed, and staring me down.
“I’m fine.” my voice cracks.
Like the other Cameron children Rafe was an Alpha, last to turn within his group of friends, but the only one of his designation amongst them. The day Rafe turned was the day he made it his mission to truly terrorize our little group.
Once JJ and Sarah turned, he backed off a bit. I guess there was a conflict between territories, but it was free reign whenever he caught one of us alone.
“Really? Cause you look like you’re about to freak out… Did you lose something?” he removes himself from the room, walking toward my direction, I take a step back trying to keep some distance between us.
It was only a matter of time before my pheromones burst from their suppressed state, notifying everyone in the building that there was an unhinged Omega in the vicinity. And I struggled to keep myself together, as I felt my sweat leaking through my pores.
He had a smirk on his face, as if he was privy to information he found amusing.
“Rafe!” Sarah shrieks from across the room, and you both turn toward her direction. “What the hell are you doing in my room?” she yells.
“I think Kie lost something, I was trying to see if she needed a bit of help finding it.” his tone didn’t sound genuine at all, in fact he sounded sneaky.
“Well, get out.” She grabs his shirt and pulls him out immediately, slamming the door in his face in the process.
“Are you ok?” She immediately turns back to me.
I drop to the ground freaking out as I push my hands into my face. “No!” Sarah rushed to my side trying to comfort me but not before hesitating for  a moment in realization of what the problem was. “I’m running out of time and I can't find my medicine.”
“Ok, ok umm, just stay in here.” I sniffle as I look up at her. “Yea, when the party's over, we’ll have you out and home by morning,” she paused before looking over to me for confirmation “Deal?”
I nod, but then I remember  “What about Rafe?”
I couldn’t risk him coming back for part 2.
“We’ll lock the door,” she pulls me up and moves me to the bed. “He doesn’t have access to my room, I promise you’ll be safe.”
She starts putting my things back into my purse. “ I’ll find some excuse for the guys, and you can just stay over for the night till we have this figured out. Ok!” she puts my bag down onto her nightstand before facing my direction.
I nod feeling helpless at the situation.
“You’ll be fine, just lay down and get some rest.”
I lay my head on her pillow facing the door, as she walks out, repeating, that I’ll be fine. I hear the soft click of the door as she closes it, indicating that it had been locked and sighed a breath of relief.
How could this happen?
I know I put a pill in a baggie and put it in my bag, where could it have gone. For a split moment an image of Rafe flashes through my mind, and I thought that maybe he might have something to do with it.
But that was impossible, even if he did go through my things and found the pill, how would he know what it was for anyways,.
I close my eyes, deciding to rest as I allowed the natural pheromones of my designation to rome, and I’m able to drown in a temporary moment of peace.
That is until I hear footsteps, moving towards me, I open my eyes and find a shadow right outside of Sarah’s door. When the doorknob turned my instincts immediately told me to run.
I quickly jump up and move toward the window.
I couldn’t stay here, every cell in my body was telling me that I wasn’t safe. I did my best to quietly climb out of the window, and luckily for me, Sarah’s window led out to the driveway, and no one was around to watch me flee for my life.
I couldn’t stay here, even if the alternative was walking all the way home, I knew I wasn’t safe at the Cameron household.

Rafe Cameron was a enigma to you. He was a mystery to you; never quite understanding his true intentions or his true feelings towards you. One moment, he swears he enjoys your company and the other he's cursing your entire existence.
You could never read his expression no matter the situation, he never wore his heart on sleeve. Not only was he an enigma, he knew how confusing he was to everyone he was to others and he used that to his advantage. He now had the power to change how outsiders saw him.
He wanted people to look his way and think how powerful he was, how strong he was. You were the only person to ever see past that big strong tough guy act. That's why he wanted you so badly; but he couldn't.
He'd betray everything he stood for because you were a Pogue. Even though Rafe felt a true connection to you, he couldn't just date you. It isn't that simple in Rafe's mind. If he were to date a Pogue, the entire island would be talking about it and he didn't want to cause more trouble for himself.
As shallow as that was, that was the harsh truth.
Rafe loved conversations with you: they were never bland, you had the most interesting questions and the most unique answers. He loved the way you spoke so freely about everything and how you never judged him for anything he said.
He didn't know why he couldn't just cut you off like every other girl he's been with. He tried to convince himself it was just a phase, that he could find another you just as easily but he never could.
He wanted to leave you, he really did. That's what his brain told him to do but his heart didn't want to; he'd connected to you like no other. You were one of a kind.
So he decided he would keep you around in secret; he would have his time with you in private and would never speak of you with his Kook friends. Rafe was okay with that; but you weren't.
Every argument you and Rafe have had was rooted in the fact that he was a Kook and you were a Pogue.
You never cared about his money or status, you were find with just Rafe. But it seemed like he cared about your status and that made you feel like he was just using you.
Words could only go so far for Rafe. All his promises were empty; "I promise I'll tell my parents about us," "I promise I'll take you to the next event", "I promise I'll talk to you at the next party." And would he ever follow up? No.
He ignored you as soon as his Kook friends were around, laughing at you and treating you like nothing as soon as they were near them. That's what hurt the most, how little his words meant to him and how much they meant to you. He'd pass it off as a joke but it wasn't. He said that he didn't mean it but every time he said it, it would prove the opposite.
He wouldn't even defend you, no matter the situation it always seemed like the other was right and you were wrong. You were always in the wrong because you were a Pogue.
You wanted to cut him off but you couldn't. As much as he was an enigma to you, he was an enigma you wanted to solve. You didn't know who was his true self; was it the one when he was around just you or with his friends? You were scared of the answer.
The air was warm and the smell of the bonfire could be smelt from blocks away, the waves splashing onto the beach of the Boneyard. Bonfire parties were always your favorite; the sight of the beach in front of you gave you the freeing energy you needed once in a while.
You walked over to the drinks, grabbing yourself a beer. JJ and Pope were right behind you, arguing about if beer tasted better from the tap or in a bottle. You couldn't care less about their stupid argument but the right answer was obviously the tap.
"Y/N, what do you think?" JJ finally came up to, arms cross in determination. You furrowed your eyebrows.
"Tap beer is the best beer. My dad would agree with me." You determined as Pope rolls his eyes in annoyance. You heard a motorcycle behind you and you turned around quickly.
You immediately knew who it was. You felt your heart jump as he took off his helmet, a smile suddenly appearing on your lips. You heard JJ sigh as he recognized who it was too. There he was, khaki pants in all: Rafe Cameron.
"God, the air just got more polluted, I could smell his body spray from here." Pope sighed as you let out a light laugh. They wouldn't this but Rafe didn't use body spray, he used cologne.
JJ grabbed your arm, pulling you away from the drinks table. "Let's get away from there."
He put his arm over your shoulder as you and Pope started walking. You opened your beer, taking a quick swing before sighing. "It's gonna be a long night."
The more you drank, the more dizzy you felt. But that didn't matter when everything becoming much more exciting. You were the lightweight of the Pogues; they knew they needed to be careful how much you drank or you would ruin the night for everyone.
But today, the only Pogues there were JJ and Pope. John B and Sarah had gotten sick (I wonder how) and Kie had a test she had to study for.
JJ was, of course, very irresponsible; so he found it way more interesting to dance with a tourist rather than make sure Y/N doesn't get into any trouble. And Pope got distracted with a girl who actually found what he was saying to be interesting.
So, you were all alone. Drinking and dancing with a group of people you don't know.
"H-Hey guys, I'll be right back. Getting a refill." You hiccupped as the people nodded. You couldn't even walk in a straight line because of how drunk you were but that was fine; you were having fun.
You got the refill and starting walking back to your group until you bumped into someone you'd never seen before. You accidentally spilled the beer all over his shirt.
You had realized what you'd done and immediately started apologizing. There were multiple people staring at you now.
He scoffed angrily, staring down at you. "Watch where you're going Pogue. You know much this shirt costs?"
You looked down at the shirt, trying to decipher a brand or anything that would tell you a price. But you genuinely didn't know. It was just a plain orange shirt to you. "Uh, 12 dollars?"
"12$?" He shouted, in utter disbelief at your words. "This shit probably costs more than your house,"
You were confused why someone would wear a hundred something dollar shirt to a party. "Why would you wear it here then? It's not my fault you decided to show up wearing an expensive shirt."
That definitely caused a reaction from his friends, earning some laughs. He scoffed again, frustrated.
"You definitely have a big mouth for a Pogue." He mumbled down to you and you just stood there. You had no idea why he was so mad; it was just a shirt. "Didn't your parents teach you fucking manners? Guess that's too much to ask for if your parents are just fucking Pogues."
The bitterness in his voice gave you goosebumps but you were definitely mad now. You shoved him hard, making him stumble down to the floor.
"You have no idea what you're talking about."
He laughed as he got up, "That definitely struck a nerve, huh, Pogue?" He said mockingly. "Did daddy leave you and mommy behind, huh? Is that what happened?"
"Oh, shut up! Like you have a clue what you're talking about. All you've ever had to worry about was your parents separating. That's all the problems you've ever had. Oh my daddy doesn't love my mom! Oh, boo-hoo, whatever-"
He took your arm and gripped it hard, coming close to your face. "Shut the fuck up."
He was suddenly shoved onto the ground again by a strong force. You look to the side to suddenly see none other than Rafe Cameron.
Rafe then knelt down and grabbed his collar, slamming his fist into the side of his face in a hard punch. The boy groaned in pain as he landed another one.
You were standing there in shock, not knowing what to do. You heard JJ's voice shout behind you as he arrived next to you, grabbing your arm.
"The fuck happened!" He shouted as he looked down at the scene in front of him. You felt like you were going to throw up all the beers you just drank.
Rafe landed one punch after the other, the boy barely conscious at that point. You quickly sobered up.
"Rafe, stop!" You shouted as you tried grabbing Rafe's arm. He shook your hand off. Then, Topper appeared, grabbing Rafe and making him stand up.
"You ever put a hand on her again, I will kill you, you understand me?" Rafe said breathlessly, his knuckles bloody now. Everyone was staring at one another in confusion. Why did Rafe just get into a fight cus of a Pogue?
The boy could barely speak but Rafe knelt down again, grabbing his face. "Understood?"
He nodded. Rafe pushed his face away as he stood up. He looked at you before sniffling, walking away with Topper behind him.
"Dude, what the fuck was that for?" You could hear Topper shout from behind you but you were too sick to even turn.
JJ pulled you away from the crowd and he kept asking you questions you honestly didn't have an answer to. You were dizzy and your ears were ringing, your stomach hurt and you felt like you were going to throw up your lunch.
"Y/N, just answer me this: why did Rafe just beat up this random dude? Was it for you?"
"Y-Yes." You managed to get out.
JJ sighed, "why?"
He already knew the answer. He solved that as soon as Rafe had thrown the first punch; he cared for you. JJ was about to throw a punch too if it weren't for Rafe. Now that he's established why Rafe had done it, why does Rafe care about you all of a sudden?
You were asking yourself the same question.

Analyzing the Kiara and Rafe Moments in "Outer Banks: Dead Break" by Jay Coles
Tumblr media
Over the weekend, I read the book Outer Banks: Dead Break by Jay Coles. I bought this book because I was happy to see that we would be getting a story from Kiara’s POV and I found early excerpts for the book that name-dropped Rafe as one of the competitors in the surf competition that Kiara signs up for. As a riara shipper, I had to read it to see if there would be any interactions between them (and I was not disappointed)!
Fellow riara fans, enjoy!
This post is GIANT, so everything is below the line!
Summary of the Book from the Dustjacket:
The waves are off the hook, and Pope and the other Pogues are betting big on Kiara blowing the Kook competition out of the water. What could possibly go wrong? It's summer in the OBX, and a big surfing competition is bringing in pro surfers from around the world to Kildare Island, along with plenty of Kooks and tourists. Meanwhile, a storm has delivered massive waves, making for perfect—yet challenging-surfing conditions. But Kiara, who has been training, is up for the challenge. As for Pope, he just started his summer internship at the city morgue—his dream job! When Kiara strikes up a flirtation with one of the pro surfers, Pope, John B, and JJ can't help but get a little jealous at the attention she receives. Meanwhile, the visiting surfers are treating Pope's dad, Heyward, like some kind of hero, but he won't explain why. When one of the professional surfers washes up dead on the beach, everyone assumes he got crushed by a wave. But Pope, Kiara, and the rest of the Pogues aren't so sure…
Quoted Moments and My Thoughts:
“The sound of heavy metal rips through the air. Rafe Cameron drives onto the sand in his expensive Jeep, multiple surfboards hanging out the back. I shake my head as he parks, pulls his t-shirt off, and heads toward the water, board at his side.” (Page 32)
Rafe's first mention is during Kiara's POV when she is at the beach with a professional surfer named Gabriel who came to OBX for the surfing competition. Is it now canon that Rafe is a heavy metal fan? Because I was NOT expecting that, but I totally love it. I like that the author wrote that he drives a Jeep, because that's what I have him drive in my riara fics (I can't remember if it's canon in the show or not). Kiara doesn't say much about Rafe in her thoughts during this moment but she saw him shirtless (which he only is once in the show I think), so a win is a win in my book.
“I’d heard that Rafe was planning to enter the competition, too. Ward has probably bought Rafe lessons with the best surf instructors money could buy from the time he could walk. He’s a decent surfer, but next to Cole [a professional surfer who is in OBX for the surf competition] and Darren [a professional surfer who is in OBX for the surf competition], he looks like a littel kid beside giants. I hope that’s not how I’ll look next to the pros in a few days. Unlike Rafe, I am entirely self-taught.” (Page 32)
I find this moment interesting because despite both being rich and living on Figure 8, Rafe and Kiara live very different lives. A big plot point in this book is how her parents don't support her dreams of becoming a professional surfer and I find it interesting that Ward is supporting Rafe's because that doesn't seem like something he would do in the show. It makes me think Rafe wasn't as bad at this point with his mental illness and drug abuse. I also like that the author used Rafe as a talking point for Kiara to compare herself to, no matter how small (we are hardly scratching the surface here), because I think there is a lot to compare between them as characters.
“I see Ward and Rafe Cameron saunter in [to The Wreck, where Kiara is waitressing] and join Darren and Alan’s [Darren’s manager] table. By the time I bring Alan and Darren their (raw) oysters, Ward is deep into his pitch for Alan to take on Rafe as a client. I try to listen in. I gotta admit, I’m jealous [...] it must be nice to have a parent who supports your dreams.” (Page 43)
This paragraph expands on my above thoughts. I find it super interesting that both Rafe and Kiara have dreams of becoming professional surfers. The rest of the Pogues aren't the same way. JJ even states, "This is why I don't think surfing should be competitive. It's all about the experience, not the medals." (Page 8). Which makes Kiara and Rafe the two competitors of characters we know that have the same dreams with surfing, and Kiara even states that, knowingly. It's also fascinating to me that Kiara would admit to being jealous of Rafe and his relationship with Ward, because once the canon of the show begins, we definitely know that would all go down the drain.
“Not only do I feel like a failure, but I also embarrassed myself in front of everyone: Gabriel, my friends, Sarah, Rafe and people from school. The entire island just saw me royally screw up. They all saw that my parents are right, surfing is a waste of my time. I’m no better than Rafe, another Kook wannabe who’s never going to travel the world surfing professionally.” (Page 86)
This moment takes place after Kiara falls off her surfboard during the competition. I just like that she name dropped Rafe, because you would usually think he is irrelevant to her, but right now, it matters to her that he saw her wipe out. AND THEN, she compares herself to him. Although, this comparison confuses me. She calls Rafe a Kook wannabe, when he is the Kookiest-of-all-Kooks. Does she think on some level he is pretending with his life status, like she is? And then she groups herself in with him, never going anywhere with their shared dream of becoming professional surfers.
And later on, in Pope's POV, JJ texts him saying, "Rafe fell almost as soon as he stood on his board. He drove off so fast he left his fancy surfboard behind." (Page 92). This makes me wonder why the author had Kiara and Rafe parallel each other even further by having them both fall during the competition and then storming off in anger over their failure.
“Rafe is here for questioning. He’s under eighteen, which means the police aren't allowed to ask him anything without a parent present.” (Page 121)
This moment is from Pope's POV, but I thought it was interesting enough to note. He says Rafe is under eighteen years old, but this since this is the summer after Kiara's Kook Year where she was a freshman at the Kook Academy, that means Rafe is either a school year younger in this story compared to show canon, or his birthday is really late in the year for his age. So, I am assuming he is seventeen in the current timeline of this story, while the Pogues are fifteen. Although John B is old enough to drive the Twinkie, so it must be passed July for him to be sixteen. Overall, this make's it a canon timeline where Rafe and Kiara's age difference is two years, instead of three.
“Kie’s the sort of person who gives everyone the benefit of the doubt, who believes that deep down, no one is beyond redemption.” (Page 128)
This is another moment from Pope's POV that I thought was really sweet. I think it is a great note about Kiara as a character. Pope later then notes that Kiara is looking at Sarah like she did something horrible (the Pogues don't know what happened between them, like in the show) and despite what Sarah did, Kiara forgives her. It makes me wonder how her and Rafe's relationship would pan out if they talked more.
On Page 154, when the Pogues (plus Gabriel, the surfer who Kiara has a crush on) are trying to figure out what happened to Cole (a professional surfer who was found murdered and also Gabriel's best friend), Kiara simultaneously defends and condemns Rafe when they look into going to him for answers since he was at the beach where Cole got murdered the morning before it happened. Rafe had gone to the police with Ward to tell them everything he knew and Pope overheard, but the Pogues think he is hiding something.
Defending: “Unless [Rafe] was lying," I interject. "Think about it: Ward was trying to get Darren’s manager to represent Rafe. Ward would never let Rafe say anything that might turn Alan against him—and implicating Alan’s star client [Darren] in a murder is hardly a way to stay on Alan’s good side.” Condemning: “In fact, maybe that’s why Rafe told the police he’d been surfing at the Evergreen Bayou to begin with—so that he could specifically say that he hadn’t seen Darren there. Maybe Rafe thought that protecting Alan’s star client would get Alan to rep him, despite his mediocre surfing skills.”
The way Kiara phrases how Ward and Rafe went to the police is important and shows she is much more observant than she thinks. She says that Ward would never let Rafe say anything. She has already noted the control Ward has over Rafe. She defends Rafe in this moment saying he might have not been able to say anything that he knows because Ward is more worried about his shot with Alan as a manager.
She then gives Rafe the power in the scenario by saying he might have thought that protecting Darren would give him a shot at having Alan as a manager. I find it interesting that she thought of Rafe in both ways.
Pages 174-185 are a GOLD MINE for riara shippers. During this sequence, Kiara infiltrates a Kook party to find Rafe and lure him outside so that the Pogues (and Gabriel) can interrogate him about the murder of Cole. I have noted my favorite passages:
“Okay, then how’re we going to get Rafe?” “We’re not going to get him,” I correct. “I am.” (Page 174)
The Pogues had pulled up to a party where they know all the Kooks are, but haven't figured out how to get Rafe. When JJ asks how they are going to do it, Kiara volunteers herself. When I tell you I almost passed out when reading this moment because I was so excited! So dramatic!
“The fact that this party is exactly the same as the one I went to months ago means I know exactly where to find Rafe. Rafe doesn’t go for plastic cups and cheap beer. He’ll be upstairs, in Ryan’s dad’s study. Last fall, Ryan called it the ‘inner sanctum’ and invited Sarah and me there.” (Page 176)
Once again, Kiara keeps noting things about Rafe that you would think she wouldn't care to remember. To me, this shows how observant of him she was during her time at the Kook Academy. And I want to know what happened when Kiara and Sarah would party alongside him!
“But at least tonight, I'm turning the power dynamic around, using the fact that [the Kook guys at the party] see me as an object, as pleasing to the eye as wall sconces and chandeliers against them. I’m using it to get what I want. And what I want is for Rafe to leave with me. Just the thought—I want Rafe to leave with me—is enough to make me gag…” (Page 179)
And what I want is for Rafe to leave with me. I AM SCREAMING, WHAT IN THE FANFIC. I love how disgusted over it Kiara is. She is a girl on a mission.
“I see Rafe and walk over to him. I can already smell the alcohol on him, like a strong odor, which tells me he’s been drinking for a while. It’s not unusual for Rafe; I’ve known him long enough to know that this is how he forgets he is Ward’s son.” (Page 179)
This paragraph made my jaw DROP. First off, it's sad to see how drunk Rafe is and then KIARA SAYS WHY HE DRINKS LIKE HE DOES. It's because of Ward and he wants to forget. She knows this information about him and I want to know how and why! It shows even further how observant she is of him. She has noted things that others fail to see. And this is why I think their relationship dynamic is important and interesting.
“Hi, Rafe,’ I say. “Hi . . . Kie,’ Rafe says (well, slurs).” (Page 179)
HE CALLS HER KIE! But, what was that pause? Did Rafe need a moment to remember who she was? Or was it surprise at seeing her? I NEED TO KNOW. I am interpreting it as surprise at seeing her and this part also emphasizes even more how drunk Rafe is; if he is slurring a simple "hi" and name.
"I sit on the shiny leather couch beside Rafe and ask if I can have a sip of his drink. He hands me a crystal tumbler etched with diamond shapes. I take a sip of the brown liquid, recognizing the flavor of good Kentucky bourbon, but I act like I’ve never had something so strong before. Rafe laughs as I pretend to have trouble swallowing. "We can get you something more your speed, little girl," he promises.” (Pages 179-180)
Rafe is WHIPPED. Immediately handing over his drink when she asks? Also, how cute, they have the same taste in alcohol lol.
AND THEN HE CALLS HER LITTLE GIRL? LIKE SIR WHAT? I seriously need to know what was going through the authors mind when he chose that pet name. In this story, Rafe is at most 2 years older than Kiara so it's not like he is way older than her or something.
“Then he literally snaps at a girl sitting on the other side of the coffee table to pass me her drink.” (Page 180)
Like, damn Rafe show your favoritism some more, please? LOL. So demanding when Kiara is in need (and this is demonstrated in show canon, too, with the entire trapped in Singh's mansion plot-line).
“I sip my sticky drink and lean into Rafe, sneaking a peek at his hand. He has two pair. ‘Fold,” I whisper. “Why?” I nod at Ryan across the table. “Ryan’s got something big.” “How can you tell?” “See the way he’s tapping his thigh?” Rafe nods. “He did it in algebra last semester when he cheated on his test. He knew he was going to get an A no matter what.” Rafe looks at me like he’s seeing me for the first time. I can feel his gaze taking in my tank top and short shorts.” (Page 180)
This is like the longest and most normal conversation Rafe and Kiara have and it literally melts my heart. They are just playing poker together and THEN we get the trope of character A looking at character B and seeing them for the first time after a pivotal moment in their relationship?? Thank you Jay Coles (author)! Also, Rafe is turned on by a smart woman, confirmed!
“Whatever the lady says,” he promises, placing his cards facedown on the table. When Ryan reveals a full house, Rafe gives me a high five.” (Page 181)
Can you see Rafe initiating a hive five with anyone? This is so heartwarming to me that he wanted to high five her out of genuine excitement. I would love to see Drew Starkey and Madison Bailey act of this entire scene, it would be so entertaining.
“Looks like I found my lucky charm,” he says. “Kiara Carrera, the half-Kook wonder.” I pretend being called a half Kook doesn’t offend me. That’s how Rafe and his friends thought of me for the year I went to school with them: not entirely a Pogue or a Kook.” (Page 181)
First off, it's so cute that he calls her his lucky charm. BUT THEN I like the deep dive into Kiara's character here. I'm surprised she is offended by something Rafe said, but it goes to show how the half-life she is living really effects her. She is adamant she is a Pogue, yet still feels in-between. And it's interesting that she notes that Rafe had previous thoughts about her. Did he explicitly tell her this, or was this something she concluded based on his actions? I wish she expanded more on her thoughts to give concrete evidence. Because that means that she and Rafe must have communicated at least a little bit during her Kook Year and I want to know it all!
“I advise Rafe for a couple more hands. But on the fourth hand, when he has three of a kind, I tell Rafe, “Go all in.” He grins at me. “Whatever my lucky charm says.” I have to keep myself from shuddering when he refers to me as his anything. Rafe pushes all his chips into the center of the table. Ryan calls. Rafe doesn't notice that Ryan's tapping his thigh again.” (Page 181)
Rafe is so oblivious to Kiara's actually feelings and I think it's so funny. He is just having a good time. Also, I love that it's canon in the show and this book that he grins at Kiara. I also think it's interesting how Kiara makes note that Rafe isn't noticing the clues she pointed out earlier. Is it because he is drunk?
"Crap!" Rafe shouts, throwing his cards down. He turns to me angrily. "Why'd you tell me to go all in?" I swallow the urge to point out that he has no right to be angry at me. I was just giving him advice; I'm not actually a magic lucky charm. But instead I say, "Look on the bright side." "What bright side?" Rafe pouts. “Now we can get out of here.” Rafe’s scowl twists into a smile as he catches my meaning. He grabs my hand and pulls me up to stand, like I’m a prize instead of an actual person.” (Pages 181-182)
I honestly wish Kiara could have called him out, because I would love to know his reaction, but I understand she had to keep playing along to accomplish her goal. BUT! We have a full confirmation that Rafe has the hots for Kiara!!!
“No way,” I shake my head. “I’m not hooking up where anyone could walk in. Your sister’s around. You know what she’ll say if she sees us together?” I make a face like I’m horrified. “I don’t care what she says.” (Page 182)
I think it's an interesting note that Rafe doesn't care about Sarah's thoughts on him and Kiara.
“I lead Rafe down the stairs and out the front door, rolling my eyes as soon as my back is turned. Boys like him are so easy.” (Page 182)
In this entire book, I do not remember a time where Rafe's love life is brought up. The Pogues joke about Topper and how he messed around with every Kook girl before getting with Sarah, but Rafe is a mystery. And, there is no mention of any girls sitting near him when Kiara found him in the study. It makes me wonder how much of this is that Rafe is easy, or that if he actually just really like Kiara.
“Where are we going, gorgeous?” Rafe asks. He holds my hand, his fingers playing on my inner wrist in a way I’m sure he thinks is sexy and suggestive. “You’ll see,” I promise and Rafe grins, his teeth white in the moonlight.” (Pages 182-183)
RIARA HOLDING HANDS!
JJ stuffs a rag in Rafe’s mouth to keep him from shouting. “Where’d you find that?” I ask. “The floor of the Twinkie,” JJ answers, which is almost enough to make me feel sorry for Rafe. I don’t think John B has ever actually cleaned the van.” (Page 183)
Kiara expresses no regret or guilt over kidnapping Rafe except that he might have a dirty ass rag in his mouth lol.
“And also? Don’t be so stupid as to leave a party with a girl who’s inexplicably interested in you after never having given you the time of day.” Rafe’s eyes go wide as it dawns on him that my flirting was all an act.” (Page 184)
Rafe has literally been gagged and thrown into the Twinkie. Is being held by Pope and JJ and JUST NOW REALIZED THAT THE FLIRTING WAS ALL FAKE? Oh yeah, he is down bad for Kiara.
"Rafe continues, his breathing slowing. “He said there wasn’t enough money in the world for him to represent me. I didn’t want my dad to know that I couldn’t close the deal with Alan.” (Page 191)
This is from Pope's POV as they interrogate Rafe, but I thought it was interesting to note that we can see bits and pieces of how much Rafe looks up to Ward and doesn't want to disappoint him, which will eventually lead to their turbulent relationship in the show.
They like to complain that I left them for Kook Academy last year (as if my parents gave me any choice in the matter), but the truth is, when they saw that I was actually making friends with some of my classmates, the guys pulled away from me, not the other way around.” (Page 194)
THIS MOMENT. This is probably the most important one in this entire book because it completely contradicts the show canon. In the show, we are meant to believe that Kiara left the Pogues in favor of her Kook friends and that is what caused a rift between them and explains why she is so loyal to them, to make up for leaving them. But, NO they left HER. This will change how I look at all of John B, JJ, and Pope's interactions with Kiara when I watch the show. She had wanted to kill herself over being at the Kook Academy, and now I wonder if she felt this way after the Pogues cut her off? My heart breaks for Kiara. Her best friends she grew up with turned their backs on her when she was forced into going to another school and happened to be friends with some of her classmates. Nobody wants to be alone at a new school. And it's probably why her relationship with Sarah hurt so much, too. Because Sarah had been her one true friend at the time, and Sarah left her, too. It changes how I view all the show dynamics, now. I wish we could dive more into Kiara's Kook year because it's such a pivotal part of her character but we only get glimpses (in the show and the book).
“[Pope] wasn’t holding Rafe tightly on purpose. He didn’t want to hurt him. Realizing that makes me love Pope more than I already do.” (Page 195)
This moment is definitely meant to focus on how Kiara admires how good of a person Pope is, but I think it can also be viewed that she didn't want Rafe to be hurt, either. And it's interesting because JJ loved hurting Rafe in this scene stating "I can do this all night and all day." as he laughs (Page 190), which probably explains why Rafe has it out for JJ n the show which leads to them fighting.
“Thanks to Rafe...” (Page 196)
This moment is so small and means nothing, but I just thought it was funny that Kiara would ever be "thanking" Rafe.
"And I'm not here to debate the finer points of toxic masculinity--" “That’s a first,” I interject, yawning. She’d somehow managed to fit in Rafe’s kidnapping.” (Page 201).
This is from Pope's POV after Kiara as snuck through his bedroom window. I just think it's funny that Kiara did use Rafe's kidnapping to give the Pogues (and by proxy, Rafe) a lesson on toxic masculinity lol.
“Tonight, I was barely home long enough to take a shower and change my clothes—my tank top and cutoffs need to be de-Rafed in the washing machine, ew…” (Pages 209-210).
AND this is the last mention of Rafe in the book and it's the funniest.
Conclusion
This book was a MAJOR win for Rafe and Kiara lovers because it confirms Rafe's liking for her further. It also gives us background on their relationship. Rafe still likes her after she lied and kidnapped him? This man is in love with her. This book further proves that the creators/writers/showrunners of OBX just love having Rafe and Kiara interact! They must see the potential if they keep teasing it! We can only hope for more moments in s4!

Y’all, I’m gonna tell you right now, I can’t do it.
If Rafe and Kie have to team up for anything and it’s gonna be all like “ Oh, I hate you but what are you gonna do we need to get out of this” I’m gonna lose it.
Like, I’ve been a good girl and I have been able to not ship them until now ‘cause of lack of scenes/history between them two BUT I have not forgotten the chemistry, ok??? I’m only human, and I am a sucker for enemies to friends to lovers and God kill me now ‘cause I just know Jiara is endgame and I can’t bear another non-canon ship.
Just an outburst. Sorry, but I had to.
