Bibliotheca Cordis (Fic, Gen)
Title: Bibliotheca Cordis Series: Tales of Zestiria Pairing: Gen Characters: Michael, Maotelus
Summary: Maotelus shows Michael his collection of banned books, and in the progress, winds up provoking him into a years-long project to create a comprehensive atlas of the world.
(You know how writers get.)
Link: AO3
This was my entry for day one of the TOZ 4th Anniversary project, at @tozanniversary! Day three's prompt was “History is the architecture of our hearts”.
Check out the other fic and art entries here:
AO3 Collection Tumblr Twitter
Read on Tumblr!
When Maotelus offered to show him the hoard of secret treasure he’d amassed over the centuries, Michael didn’t really know what to expect. He’d only known the seraph for a little while, and it was somewhat difficult to imagine him seated atop a pile of gold coins and glimmering jewels. It seemed like a very boring way to pass the time, and a poor use of a hypothetical secret treasure room inside an ancient labyrinth. Still – even if Michael wasn’t sure what awaited him, the price of admission was a bag of curry buns, and that seemed like a bargain.
They wound through the darkened and befuddling halls of the Shrinechurch Labyrinth, Maotelus leading the way in a smaller version of his dragon form – barely larger than a housecat, and glowing bright in the dark of the maze. They came to a stop at a dead end. Maotelus breathed deep, and exhaled silver flame against the wall in front of him. The unassuming stone briefly blazed alight with his holy crest, then faded just as quickly – and revealed a door in its place. The heavy stone door groaned as it opened, and Michael just about died on the spot at the sight of the priceless treasures within.
Books. Books by the hundreds, maybe thousands. Rare books – books that had been banned by the church for spreading heresy – books that were thought lost to the ages.
“The Shrinechurch goes into fits every few decades over some new book or another,” Maotelus explained as Michael stumbled through the rows of shelves, as if he was a saint reeling under the weight of a recent revelation, or a man drunk. “They implement a ban, confiscate copies, and bring them here to offer up to me to burn.”
Michael managed to muster up enough presence of mind to process the ridiculousness of that statement. “To you? They expect you to burn them?”
“I know, right?” Maotelus shook his head incredulously. “I mean, it’s worked out for me, I guess, but I’m not sure who put that idea in their heads. Though I suppose I have my suspicions. I’ve made friends with some people over the years who are very passionate about keeping history recorded.”
Michael had a pair of cloth gloves he used when handling delicate artifacts. He tugged them on with shaking hands, and carefully, reverently picked out a book to start with. A book of fairy tales, written in Ancient Avarost. Michael would have cut off his right leg to get his hands on something like this, and he’d gotten it for the low price of ten gald and a bag of buns.
“My collection only goes back so far,” Maotelus said as Michael carefully turned the book’s brittle pages. “It wasn’t until King Claudin that use of the printing press was able to spread into secular spheres. He was a big crusader for mass literacy. Even if subsequent leadership differed in opinion from him, the technique was so widespread that banning it did squat.”
“Once the horse has bolted, locking the gate won’t do much,” Michael agreed. “Stupid of them to try. Printing – literacy – these books…it’s all much too important to keep from the world.”
“Well, I agree,” Maotelus said. “But did you know one of their concerns involved preserving art and architecture?”
Ancient architecture was just about the only thing that could break Michael’s concentration right now. He looked up from the page he was reading – a page with an illustration of an eight-necked beast about to swallow the continent. Maotelus gave a toothy grin, and sat back on his haunches to unwrap a bun with his clawed hands.
“I knew that’d get your attention. Before literacy was more widespread, art and architecture were the best way to communicate ideas and preserve history. You probably already knew that. But then the printing press came along…and suddenly, there’s no need for building grand cathedrals to house those stained-glass triptychs telling the stories of ancient Shepherds. You can just print out pamphlets and picture books to spread the good word. Maintaining older temples and such becomes less important. Better things to spend money on, anyway, no? And so you wind up with crumbling ruins dotting the continent; any history they have to tell long decayed and forgotten. There were other forces at play, of course. But it’s partially a consequence of these books on my shelves.”
Maotelus finished his bun, and dug around in the bag for another. Michael’s face was devoid of color. His heart felt as heavy as lead.
“Architecture can last longer than any human lifespan. Much longer than books, even; I’ve definitely lost some of my originals to basic decay, and only have copies that I wrote out myself. But it can only be lasting if there’s interest in making it last. Otherwise, it’s all just dust and stone.”
“…it shouldn’t have to be that way.”
Maotelus stopped mid-bite, blinking over the bun in his mouth.
“It shouldn’t have to be one or the other. That’s just – nonsense,” Michael spat. He clutched the book to his chest, tightly. “They don’t care about it because they don’t know about it and that’s what books are supposed to do. They make people know. They can make more people know than ever – they can spread across the entire world. They can make people on other continents hear the way the bells sound in Lastonbell, or dream about the rainbow spray off Ladylake’s water wheels when the sun hits them just right, or…or—”
“Taste a bun fresh from the Pendrago street market?” Maotelus offered, then offered one. “It sounds like I touched a nerve.”
“You might have,” Michael agreed. The bun was warm in his hand; stuffed heavy with filling. “Is there…is there anything like that? In your collection?”
“No, not really. Certainly not anything comprehensive. It’s a dangerous world out there, and people don’t get up to much travelling anymore. More importantly, most of them have bigger things to worry about than reading dry history books.”
Michael felt his hackles raise at the word. “Dry? What’s dry about it?”
Maotelus gave him a Look. “Don’t shoot the messenger. Who’s standing in whose library, now?”
There was no stopping Michael when he had a goal in mind. He crammed the bun into his mouth all at once, and leapt to his feet. He slowed down just enough to carefully slide the book he’d borrowed back into its place on the shelf, then resumed his mad dash to the small, Maotelus-sized desk at the corner of the room. The chair was too small for him, but there was no time for such trivial setbacks when inspiration had struck.
Maotelus watched as Michael dumped out the contents of his pack onto his desk, and slowly chewed.
“…you making yourself comfortable?”
“No, it’s very uncomfortable,” Michael replied, his words muffled by half-chewed curry bun. He found his ink and writing stick, and his journal full of travel notes. “Can you get me a real chair? And some more paper.”
Maotelus weighed the bag of buns in his claw, considering. He then eyed the empty spots on his shelves. A chair, and some paper, and surrendering his desk for an evening or three. And in return, a book that was sure to be the prize of his collection. It seemed like a bargain.
“Fine,” Maotelus said. He waddled off towards the door, and called over his shoulder: “I want a signed copy, though. When you’re done.”

Please tell me more about transformative fandom thriving
!! lovely anon I would enjoy nothing more!! Unfortunately I am like two seconds and one badly-packed bag (pink fluffy blanket, monster-paw slippers, leather cowboy hat) away from leaving on an all-queer-girl camping trip in Northern California (hang on….gonna go put ciders in this bag….) so I can only dash off a few completely incoherent things! Transformative fandom is thriving in that more people are aware of it and doing it and sharing it in easier fashions than ever. AO3 is a serious force despite being uncommercialized, which is truly incredibly, and I’ve seen it talked about as a really interesting model at social media conferences, and in the open source world. Transformative fandom has actual legal power too! Transformative fandom is thriving in that every year, more and more creators are open about fic and other fanworks. Look at Seanan McGuire or Rainbow Rowell or Naomi Novik (I’m biased as a tech researcher, but I think this is probs from the increased legal and social legitimacy of projects like ao3. People see what a feat it is to succeed in fandom, and then those creators who cross over provide a model for that audience crossing over). But tbh where I’m most interested in seeing it happen is more disparate, in the general cultural conversation in publishing and creative works? Like there have been so many thoughtful and analytical feature pieces about large fandoms. I see transformative fandom mentioned respectfully in a lot more media these days. Harry Potter had a pretty seismic shift on how multimedia entertainment thought about fans and female fans especially. I know these things are slow and terrible and these organizations still don’t “get” us, but from when I was a data analyst at a massive tech company who did some consultations in sales across entertainment divs, I saw how much people have changed in how they talk about distributed creation and transformative fandoms. My professional fields are psychology and human-computer interaction, so I’m most interested in the HUGE change we’ve seen in how creative content gets an audience, with streaming platforms and crowdsourced platforms. I honestly think transformative fandom is both driven by and a driver of this. We don’t usually talk about fanfic this way, but it’s an incredibly crowdsourced model for creativity! There are just technological things that enabled this (far deeper internet penetration, more accessible creation technologies, just cultural norms like our subcultures learning to find each other via social media). And of course the more that we get strange blurring lines about who is the “authority” of a story (somebody could kickstart an incredible youtube series that’s a modern retelling of a book from classical literature! If that’s not part of transformative fandom and its power WHAT IS), I think more and more people get inspired to create and co-create. (academic research on transformative fandom is also slowly starting to emerge! I don’t know how many people care about *that* as a signal that transformative fandom is doing well, but it feels to me like a good lagging indicator) My ACTUAL research at work right now is about micro-contributions to communities of practitioner knowledge (mostly with code and engineering). But even though all my professional work has been about engineering, I can’t stop thinking fandom is incredible for this kind of microcontribution stuff, too!  Look at the inventive twitter stories people tell, or the way they use tumblr’s weird format to enable all of this beautiful creativity (I love tag stories, for instance). As much as we struggle with a complicated world and large monopoly corporations, I also think we’re in the middle of such a beautiful moment of bottom-up, uncommercial creativity. You see so many creators and showrunners starting to emerge from these new models (look at Wynnona Earp fandom and its creators’ stance toward it!). For all that the internet and technology is full of wildly difficult things for our culture, I think many of us are responding to this challenge of “scale” by creating much smaller communities that are much healthier, and fandom is a perfect way to do that. Ok that got long and is crazy messy. I wish I had time to write something way better and more coherent but I love this stuff? I have a lot of faith in us and in all that we’re doing to create?

Castle on the Hill (Ch. 1)
(Just in case because some of you don’t have AO3)
“Move in with me.” He pulled off his clunky headphones, gazing up to see a familiar blonde standing above him, her usual slicked-back ponytail and pastel pink sweater had gone and been replaced with a darker look, drawing his attention away. She dressed in black, tear tracks staining her usually pale cheeks pink, her eyes sparkled with a look of undeniable sadness and agony, and her hand was curled into fists, her nails digging painful crescents into the pale skin of her palm, and her face was ridden of all makeup.
“Sorry, Betts, did you just ask me to move in with you?” He shut the lid of his laptop, he screwed up his eyes in pure disbelief, his heart beating erratically in his chest he grabbed onto her hand, pulling her down to sit next to him on the bench. Holding her hand in his he looked into her eyes, squinting as he desperately tried to detect some note of humour, but he found nothing.
“Yes, Juggie.” she paused, wiping away stray tears that had dried on her face, “I know that you have nowhere to go, and don’t you dare say otherwise.” She pointed an accusing finger at him sternly as she anticipated his incoming excuses. He nodded, finding no room for disagreement or argument, before standing up, dragging her over to the high school's front gate. He took his hand back, letting it drop to his side, as they walked side by side, her house only a short way away.
They walked in silence, not a single word exchanged, the air shrouded in awkwardness, the only sound being that of their feet slapping against the pavement. Autumn leaves fell in dizzying circles, floating above them in a rainbow of oranges and browns, the wind picking them up and sending them flying back and forth above their heads, the crisp wind sweeping them up and into the air once again. They could hear the crunch of leaves underfoot, the cracking a distant cacophony, birds twittering up above and the muffled barking of dogs spreading throughout the neighbourhood in waves. The sun shone down through the breaks in the branches, the golden beams of light illuminating her soft flaxen hair, the swishing of her ponytail like a pendulum, the calm to and fro lulling him into a calm state, the sweet scent of strawberries idly floating in a ring around her petite frame.
Shaking his head he came to the realisation that they were nearing the Cooper's home, the idyllic stereotypical house stood in a row of equally identical houses, rows and rows of houses filled the Riverdale upper east side, people worked calmly in their gardens, prepping and pruning, children running between the columns of plants and flowers chasing butterflies, parents sitting on porches looking on disapprovingly as they stared on at their neighbour’s houses, judging under the shades of their sunglasses. Her house was a pale blue, doors pale blue, everything pale blue. It was sad, it reminded him of a world he was all too familiar with, a world he wouldn’t have ever wanted for Elizabeth Cooper. Walking up the driveway towards the front door, she stuttered in her steps, her feet tripping on nothing, her breath coming out in a hiccupped huff, she flushed as she continued up the drive. Taking out her keys she urged her hands to cease with their incessant shaking and unlocked the door, pushing herself inside dragging Jughead along behind her, before she started making her way upstairs, Jughead following close behind. Putting her book bag at the end of the bed she noticed him standing hesitantly in her doorway, his beanie lopsided atop his head. She could sense his hesitation, the harsh line of his shoulders, the tense of his jugular in his throat, the flush in his cheeks. She sighed, gazing down at her lap with a faint chuckle.
“It's fine, Juggie. Come on in.” He stepped past the doorframe and she felt her breath catch in her throat, her heart rate jumped in her chest, and her pupils dilated. She had never had been allowed to have a guy in her room before, the realisation like a physical hit to the heart, and Jughead had just broken that very strict rule, shattering her icy shell encapsulating her very soul, opening her up and letting in impossible warmth. He wandered over to her bed, sitting down by her side though careful not to get too close, and took the ‘Blue and Gold’ folder from her hands, peeling the cover off the booklet inside. He poured over the booklet, staring in awe at her beautifully designed paper, his name plastered across the page, his name in every by-line, his heart in every word. She bit her lip as she stared at his face, watching the glow and beautiful expression across his face, the twinkle in his eye as he stared at his own writing, her lip bruising under the pressure of her teeth. She could see him slide the sheets of paper back into the file, the room shrouded in silence, and back into her waiting hands. Before she could react he pressed a hesitant peck to her cheek, the pressure sending flames through her body directly to her heart. She blushed, a smile held back by a bite to the lip. He pulled back, gripping onto her shoulders, and stared directly into her eyes.
“Betts… you’re amazing. This is amazing.” He paused, a genuine smile spreading across his face, “I can’t thank you enough. For everything. For giving me a voice, for giving me a chance, for being a good… friend. Especially for letting me stay with you.” He stuttered on the word ‘friend’, the word being far too mild to describe the growing warmth and closeness developing between them.
“Of course, Juggie. Apart from Archie, you’re my best friend.” She smiled sweetly up at him, her eyes sparkling brightly under the overhead light, not even trying to hide it. She reached down to unpack her things, her hair flowing down and around her face, effectively shielding her blushing cheeks from view.
He smirked, his eyes turning down to look at his splayed palms, and leant back on her bed. He lay down on the soft fuchsia-coloured duvet with his legs bent off the edge of the bed, his eyes closing with a sigh at the almost unfamiliar feeling of the plush mattress underneath him, the pureness of the moment sending his mind spinning in lazy circles, the only thing drawing him out of his thoughts being the sudden feeling of Betty’s fingers threading themselves into his hair. Her fingers pressed soothing circles into his scalp, the wrinkles between his furrowed brows dissipating, the feeling pulling him back under. She watched as he sighed with pure bliss, his eyelids softening as well as his shoulders, the taught muscles relaxing with every press to his scalp. She smiled down at him, watching him splayed across her bed, his face clear of worry and frustration, noticing the smallest upturn of his lips steadily spreading across his face as she felt his hand reach up to join with hers. Her eyes widened in surprise, her cheeks blushing a bright pink, the blueness of her eyes deepening to a pure shade of azure, her heart beat quickening and beating erratically against her ribcage. He felt her fingers still in his hair, his eyes snapping open in concern, only to find her staring down at her with unabashed adoration. He felt his face heat up, unfamiliar nervousness spread through his body, the warm, prickly feeling spreading through every inch of his skin, his body feeling full, his head feeling fuzzy.
He sat up and searched through his bag, the black duffle full of his clothes and an assortment of different items including various photographs and small memorabilia. His homework files sat at the very bottom, the piles of paper packed neatly atop one another, printed pages overflowing from the various folders he had stuffed in his bag. He pulled out a folder before setting it down by his side, the brightly coloured file full of newspaper articles and obituary files, all labelled and sorted in levels of relevance to Jason Blossom’s untimely death. Though he never liked the pompous red-head he wanted to investigate the traumatic incident for the sake of the town, to restore the angelic image of the town which was now shrouded in darkness with the mysterious death, the events that conspired still not adding up. Suddenly, with the abrupt widening of her crystal blue eyes, he watched as she stood up from the plush comforter, with a rushed murmur, she dashed downstairs at the sound of the door unlocking with a resounding click. He jumped up from where he was sitting before he raced down the stairs towards the foyer to find a disgruntled Mrs Cooper staring daggers at the dark-haired boy.
She knew.

In San Francisco, the Revival of the Hotel Bar
San Francisco has long had an excellent bar scene, but, until a few years ago, many of the city’s hotel bars left something to be desired. Overpriced and outdated, they also had a noticeable lack of locals.
Lately, though, San Francisco hotel bars are having a revival, with a wave of cocktail-centric spots featuring creative, accessible drinks and the city’s top bar talent. These high-profile destination cocktail bars have become places that locals and visitors alike are seeking out.
The growing presence of hotel bars with buzz has the attention of industry insiders. “Often, the arrangement is a good financial one for potential bar owners,” said Maggie Hoffman, drinks writer for The San Francisco Chronicle and author of the cocktail book, Batch Cocktails. “These spots are convenient for visitors and give tourists an opportunity to see what San Francisco is capable of, cocktail-wise. But locals definitely go to these places, too.”
One of the first signs of this turnaround was Benjamin Cooper, a speakeasy-style spot that opened at Union Square’s Hotel G in March 2015.
“I have a hard time calling that a hotel bar, and that’s a huge compliment to them,” said Morgan Schick, creative director of BVHospitality, a company that has opened a number of local bars and designed their bar programs. Best known for the award-winning cocktail bar, Trick Dog (still one of the city’s hippest spots), Mr. Schick and his partner, Josh Harris, are behind the bar programs for Charmaine’s and Villon at Proper Hotel, a trendy boutique property that opened on Market Street in the summer of 2017.
Charmaine’s opened in the hotel that November, and immediately attracted attention from local savants thanks to the duo’s stellar reputation, and for the bar’s rooftop location with views of downtown San Francisco and the bustling, warehouse-filled South of Market district. With its plush seating, fire pits and well-heeled clientele, Charmaine’s caused lines to form down McAllister Street.
The al fresco setting influenced Charmaine’s cocktail menu. “Let Me Touch Your Mind,” a coconut-rich Piña Colada layered with a Negroni when served, best sums up the menu for Mr. Schick.
“You think, ‘I’m in a classy-looking place so I’m going to drink a Negroni. But I’m also on vacation with this tremendous view, so I want to drink a Piña Colada, too,’” he said.
A more recent addition to San Francisco’s rooftop bar scene is Everdene, a standout which opened this April atop the new Virgin Hotels San Francisco. Besides taking its name from the heroine of Thomas Hardy’s “Far from the Madding Crowd,” Everdene has a lush, garden party vibe that feels far removed from the crowds below in SoMa. The drinks program consists of brightly colored, flora-heavy sippers (tequila-based “Her Majesty’s Pleasure,” with cucumbers and sugar snap peas, is an early favorite), courtesy of the lead bartender Tommy Quimby, another Trick Dog alum. Mr. Quimby also designed the drinks program for the downstairs hotel bar and restaurant Commons Club, which features spirit-steeped drinks named for original Virgin Records artists.
Over by Union Square, the cocktails at Gibson, which opened in October 2017 in the Hotel Bijou, are familiar flavors done in unfamiliar ways, said the beverage director Adam Chapman. But while you’ll find genre-bending, flavor-packed wonders like the “Clear Bloody Mary” (off menu, but available by request), made with clarified tomatoes, three types of soy sauce, and fermented ponzu, Mr. Chapman does simplify the drink menu’s language.
“Instead of saying ‘sous vide this, centrifuge that,’ we may just say, ‘Huckleberry,’” Mr. Chapman said, adding that if guests are interested in learning more, he’s happy to go deep.
Gibson’s elegant, Art Deco environs with lots of gold detailing, mirrors and high ceilings set it apart from the more understated hotel. Mr. Chapman said outside guests, many of them locals, make up the vast majority of Gibson’s clientele.
Laureate Bar & Lounge, at The Laurel Inn, a cozy, low-key property in Pacific Heights, feels even more like its own entity. A recent Monday night saw a solid crowd of regulars sipping wine and martinis around the minimalist Mid-Century Modern fireplace cut directly into the terrazzo tile.
“We’re a neighborhood bar,” said Sam McGinnis, Laureate’s bar supervisor. “We want you to feel like you’re walking into your best friend’s living room.”
Mr. McGinnis cited the bar’s relatively affordable prices — all cocktails are $12 — and their use of at least one local ingredient in every drink, as part of this effort. Their menu is made of a seasonally rotating selection of drinks (the rainbow-hued Pride Month menu includes “What’s Up, Doc?,” a carrot, ginger and tequila number), but guests can expect surefire hits on their permanent selection of classic cocktails. A pitch-perfect rye Old Fashioned, made with local bitters and served on a large ice cube, would be at home at any top bar in the city.
Tucked in a stunning remodel of a classic Japantown hotel, The Bar at the Hotel Kabuki in Japantown, located between Pacific Heights and Fillmore, has also made price point a means of reaching a local clientele — it offers a daily happy hour with $7 Highballs, alongside spiked tea-centered cocktails for two, and a large selection of Japanese whisky. The Bar is accessed directly from the hotel’s modern, light-filled lobby, but has a cooler, upbeat vibe than a typical hotel bar, complete with curated stacks of books and records.
The main cocktail menu, designed by Stephanie Wheeler (formerly of Three Dots and a Dash in Chicago), centers on Japanese Hanakotoba, the language of flowers. The Chrysanthemum is a popular choice, and a worthy order — the herbaceous, Negroni-like gin drink features local St. George gin infused with goji berry.
The bartenders are knowledgeable, and agile, too; when a menu item was unavailable, the bartender asked a few questions about my spirit and flavor profile preferences, whipping up a nicely balanced, mezcal-based version of a classic Penicillin, typically made with Scotch.
Those looking for a one-two punch of topnotch hotel drinking would do well to head back to Union Square, to the Hotel G, home of the lauded Benjamin Cooper and now, Ayala, an airy seafood restaurant and bar that opened in December — the executive chef Melissa Perfit was previously at San Francisco’s Bar Crudo.
The cocktails are courtesy of the James Beard-nominated bar director, Julian Cox, who most recently was at San Francisco’s Tartine Manufactory. He’s created a menu in close conjunction with the kitchen that’s proving to be a hit with hotel guests, locals, and, significantly, the restaurant industry crowd.
“Every night, it’s like a who’s who of chefs and bartenders coming in,” Mr. Cox said.
With these hotel bars, bartenders are finding there’s a balancing act to appeal to both hotel guests as well as locals. While Mr. Cox prioritizes light, bright drinks that pair well with seafood, along with recognizable classics to appeal to hotel guests, the drinks also have a creative bent. Popular orders include the Castrevelano “Washed” Martini, a surprise hit from the martini section of the menu, and A Diving Bell, a mezcal-centric refresher laced with gin, yuzu and cayenne. The obscure, vermouth-based Ayala Julep has been a favorite.
Mr. Cox sees it as only fitting the direction that the city’s hotel bars are taking.
“Hotels are really where the history of cocktails begins!” he said. “In the golden age of bartending, the hotels were where you wanted to go and drink.”

The My Little Pony The Movie Toy Range is Magic!
I have loved My Little Pony for as long as I can remember, in fact one of my earliest childhood memories is waking up on Christmas morning and discovering that Santa had brought me a beautiful pink My Little Pony called Lickety Split. I instantly loved her and carried her around with me everywhere I went just like Zoey does now with her little My Little Pony figures.
Some nostalgia with my vintage My Little Pony Lickety Split
Zoey seems to be following in my footsteps and loves My Little Pony just as much as me, of course the toys have changed somewhat now and have dare I say it, more magic about them with their glittery design and very pretty big eyes and accessories plus. I was therefore very excited when I was recently asked to work on an exciting campaign to celebrate the launch of the new My Little Pony: The Movie and a fantastic new range of toys. All three of my kids love watching My Little Pony on TV (although the boys may refuse to admit it) so I couldn't wait to take them to see the movie. My Little Pony The Movie brings Twilight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Apple Jack, Rarity and Fluttershy to the big screen for their most exciting adventure yet. When the menacing Storm King invades Canterlot with plans to steal the magic from the ponies, the very future of Equestria is at stake! Armed with nothing but determination, loyalty, and a bottomless bag of cupcakes, the Mane Six embark on an action packed heroic journey that takes them beyond the borders of Equestria for the first time ever. The movie is wonderful as it teaches children all about the importance of friendship, kindness and courage. One thing that rings true from the movie is that "challenges are best met with friends by your side, and that there really is no force stronger than the Magic of Friendship."

My Little Pony The Movie Toy Range
To coincide with the release there has been an exciting new range of toys created, some of which we were lucky enough to have been sent.
My Little Pony: My Magical Princess Twilight Sparkle
If you have a My Little Pony fan then I can guarantee you they will instantly fall in love with My Magical Princess Twilight Sparkle once they set eyes on her just like Zoey and I did.
She is in a word, beautiful, with so many special details such as her sparkly pegasus wings, big pretty eyes and eyelashes, a light up unicorn horn, not to mention the fact that she responds to sound and touch and actually talks to you, telling stories and talking about spells with not just one or two phrases but 90 plus.
How beautiful are Princess Twilight Sparkle's eyes and long eyelashes!
Pretty luminescent pink sparkly Pegasus wings
We love her interactive features which bring her to life, when you touch her horn it lights up and she talks about her magical spells and press the Star Button on her hoof to hear her friendship advice, stories or songs. She is poseable so you can sit her next to you and she can move her head and hoof too. No princess would be complete with her tiara which can be removed if you wish to groom or style her main or try on yourself which Zoey likes to do.
With Princess Twilight Sparkle's interactive and responsive features she is truly magical and shares some wonderful advice on friendship which is so nice to see in a toy these day. We love her.
Princess Twilight Sparkle is available to buy from toy retailers such as Smyths Toys, Argos and online from Amazon with prices starting at £99.99.
My Little Pony Seashell Lagoon Playset
The Seashell Lagoon Playset is a fantastic set which fans of the My Little Pony the Movie will recognise and love.
It comes with a Pinkie Pie seapony figure which has a pretty mermaid-like tail and the set is the perfect place to go on adventures and encourages imaginative play and creativity in children.
There is so much to do in Seashell Lagoon with places to swing from, spin on and a hammock that can be rocked while your pony enjoys some chill out time, both the twins said they wished they could go to a real life place like this which I had to agree would be seriously awesome. Zoey's favourite feature is the fact that you can add water to to create bubbles inside the front window of the playset, imitating scenes from Seaquestria by pressing the pearl-shaped button which also activates lights. It is the magic touch in this toy that we have now come to associate with My Little Pony.
Also included in the playset is an exceptionally cute little fish friend and a vast array of fourteen different accessories, such as beautiful tiaras, perfect for pampering and dressing up your Pinkie Pie in front of her seashell mirror which Zoey has informed me she loves.
Due to the numerous play options in this playset, coupled with the accessories included and the familiarity with the movie for fans; this toy is fantastic for engaging your child and sparking their imagination which leads them to be engaged and returning to play with it time and time again - a big win for parents who dread the play with once and abandon toys out there. I should also mention that although it may look pink and girly, I bet a lot of brothers will be happy to join their sisters in playing with it, that is if Zachary is anything to go by, he loves joining Zoey on Seaquestria adventures and together the twins have had a lot of fun putting it to the test.
The Seashell Lagoon Playset is available to buy from toy retailers such as Smyths Toys, Argos and online from Amazon with prices starting at £29.99.
My Little Pony Friendship is Magic Figures
We were also sent a selection of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic 3 inch Figures which come with their own clip on accessories. We were sent Pinkie Pie, Rarity, Lyra Heartstring and Princess Twilight Sparkle and all of these ponies have a fresh new look inspired by the movie.
Zoey and her friends loved these, especially Pinkie Pie and her clip on cupcake accessory. Zoey loved Pinkie Pie so much she started kissing her before we even got her out of the packaging.
The figures are available to buy from Smyths Toys, Argos and online from Amazon.
Our Verdict
Working on the My Little Pony campaign has been a wonderful experience for me and my kids, we have not just reviewed toys and watched the movie but we have talked about friendship and what it means. As part of the campaign I have taken part in wonderful Twitter parties #MyLittlePonyMonday which have resulted in some interesting conversations with other parents on the value of friendship for children and kindness and how My Little Pony is a fantastic tool to expose children to such values from a young age in a way they can relate to. The six ponies in My Little Pony uphold these values and through watching the TV show and the movie the kids are learning from them and it helps to reinforce what we as parents try to teach out children. They can then go on to put what they have learned into practice through play with the toys and then in real life with friends and family. I have seen this firsthand with my children and find myself often referring to the My Little Pony characters when we talk about being kind to friends.
As for the toys, we love them all and can highly recommend them. They are well designed and great quality with engaging features that children will love. Zoey adores the My Little Pony toys she has received and is pretty much always found with a pony figure in her hand or nearby these days. I also have to admit that my love of My Little Pony is stronger now at my age, than it was when I was a child. I feel very lucky to have a little girl who loves My Little Pony and it is lovely that we are making special Mummy and daughter memories playing My Little Pony together which she will hopefully carry forward to adulthood and continue when / if she has a daughter herself which feels extra magical.

Seven Fitness Challenges to Prove How Jacked Your Are
Summer bods will be hard to maintain as the sun sets on these final few dog days and the brisk breeze of autumn ushers in a serious craving for carbs. But you can keep the extra pounds at bay outside of beach season by participating in fitness and adventure events galore. From breaking a sweat in bouncy houses to pushing your limits through treacherous terrain, here are seven events widely available across the country to keep you in top shape – or at least at a steady weight so you can stuff your face all fall and winter long.
Vacation Races
Breathtaking views and the pursuit of healthy living converge in Vacation Races, which hosts 5Ks, half-marathons, Trailfests (multi-day, 50-plus-mile adventures) and Ultras (featuring 100K, marathon and half-marathon options), set in the most majestic places in the United States, like Yellowstone and Yosemite national parks, the Shenandoah Mountains, Mount Rushmore and Joshua Tree, among a dozen-plus other spectacular, getaway-worthy landmarks and historical locations.
The Color Run
Billed as the “Happiest Event on the Planet” – and arguably the one with the gayest sensibility – The Color Run 5K douses white-clad participants head to toe in a rainbow of colors (in the form of edible, nontoxic powders; they’re not trying to poison you) as you run 3.1 miles through a course that this year includes a Dream Wall that allows runners to paint their aspirations, photo ops with giant unicorns, a colored Foam Zone and a Finish Festival with music and post-race sustenance. Runs are held from February to November, setting up shop in 31 states from coast to coast.
ROC Race
Ridiculous Obstacle Challenge (ROC Race for short) grew to more than 100,000 participants last year, all of whom were gunning to get wet, wild and a little banged up through a course of about a dozen obstacles – inspired by the ABC game show _Wipeout_ – like the infamous Wrecking Balls, the menacing Sweeper and a finish-line glide down a four-story waterslide. Locations for ROC are limited to northern and southern California, New England and D.C.; this year’s last hurrah pops off in NYC on Sept. 10.
Warrior Dash
Elite athletes and first-timers alike will find the strength to conquer Warrior Dash’s 12 world-class obstacles, including scaling walls, crawling through muddy trenches and jumping over fire, in this test of endurance that rewards finishers with medals and a post-race party with beer, music and a few thousand other crusty Dashers to mingle with.
Cotopaxi Questival Adventure Race
Grab a group of two to six of your closest friends and set off on a journey of adventure, exploration and a lifetime of memories during this 24-hour scavenger hunt-meets-outdoor discovery excursion that sets you on a beat-the-clock list of challenges that traverse the terrain, from urban jungle to mysterious forests to the splashy shores of our expansive coast lines. The best part is, you don’t know what you’re in for until you get there.
Tough Mudder
If you’ve checked the popular 5K races and courses off your weekend-warrior bucket list, graduating to the Tough Mudder is the next logical progression in your total fitness-event domination. Here, you’ll work your way through 10 miles of mud (tie those shoes tight!), completing challenges that include scaling a 15-foot wall, scrambling up a slippery slope, and – nipple alert! – plunging into a dumpster packed with 10 tons of ice.
Rugged Maniac
Consider wearing disposable clothing to the covered-in-sludge Rugged Maniac 5K and Obstacle Course, which boasts more than 25 physical challenges like gymnastic rings above a muddy moat, army crawls beneath barbed wire and underground tunnels over a three-mile course. When you’ve passed the finish line, clean up at available showers and join the party featuring food and bevs, a live DJ, mechanical bulls, and pie-eating and stein-holding contests. Host cities include Denver, Atlanta, Chicago, New York City and Los Angeles, among 20-plus other areas in the United States and Canada.

Is Adidas Releasing This Ultra Boost for LGBT Pride Month?
One of Adidas’ most beloved running shoes could be getting a multicolored makeover for LGBT Pride Month. Official adidas.com images have surfaced of a rainbow-accented take of the Ultra Boost 3.0. This look includes a black knitted upper with the 3.0’s signature linear pattern, white Boost cushioning and a black Continental rubber outsole. But the real star of the shoe is the multicolor pattern that spans from the top of the outer heel cup to the bottom of the support cage. The dash of color blends green, yellow, blue, purple, red and orange dots on an otherwise monochromatic palette. This Ultra Boost 3.0 features a black Primeknit upper and a multicolored pattern at the heel. This Ultra Boost 3.0 is reportedly tied to Adidas’ 2017 “Pride Pack” collection. In years past, the brand has included sneakers such as the Stan Smith and Superstar in its LGBT Pride Month releases, but this would be the first time the Ultra Boost has been featured. There is currently no confirmed release date for this pair, however previous Adidas “Pride Pack” sneakers have launched in June. This LGBT Pride-inspired Ultra Boost colorway features the shoe’s 3.0 knit pattern. A top-down look at the “Pride” Adidas Ultra Boost. The Continental rubber outsole of the Adidas Ultra
