Thick As A Brick 40th Anniversary Jethro Tull (Chrysalis) (40th Anniversary originally released in 2015, this package reissued in 2022; original album released in 1972)

Say what you will about Jethro Tull, one thing holds steadfast.  This band (albeit Ian Anderson, the only mainstay member in their gazillion year career) loves their fans and they have one of the best absolute best boxed set series of any band anywhere.  As a young lad, I was a massive Tull fan.  I bought them in real time beginning with their second album 1969′s Stand Up all the way through their 11th album, 1978′s Heavy Horses.  Imagine buying Tull at the height of Ramonesmania, but that’s what I was doing and my Tull fervor sort of died there. 

Cut to boxedsetmania, every band is charging massive amounts of cash for anniversary editions of fabled albums and then here comes Jethro Tull setting a new standard that no one follows save for them.  And good for them.  All of their reissues come out in these book-boxed sets.  Virtually all of them save this particular album is a multi-disc set (two, three or four CDs and at least two DVDs) and all of them, including this one contains a 100 page book detailing (and I mean detailing the history of the album in question).  And every single book-box has been less than $50 and most of them are under $40.  It is one of the best deals you can discover if you are a fan.

Tull fans love these books and have cried about album reissues that didn’t come out in book-boxes (I don’t know the proper term for them, obviously) so Ian Anderson reissued all his deluxe editions in this format.  Then fans cried that Thick As A Brick, which was the very first Tull reissue, which has long been out of print and very expensive to purchase if you find an original copy.  Fans being fans can be a little bit OCD and complained about not having this album in deluxe edition book/box.  I had no idea that Anderson reissued this so fans could have every single Tull reissue in the exact same format and good for him.  When I discovered this was released (I only learned seven days ago through the Hoffman boards when they talked about a price drop at amazon for this item.  I couldn’t believe it existed again. 

Did I need it?  I still have the original album I had when I was but a kid and boy did I love this album.  But I have ten (dear me) Tull reissues and this is the only one I didn’t own and I’m like any other fan.  I want the whole set of what I bought as a kid and a dorky college boy buying Tull instead of Sham 69.  And now I have the first 11 Jethro Tall albums in these book sets and honestly, having played them, it is doubtful I shall ever have a need to play any Tull in my lifetime again.  I haven’t heard this album in ages and I may or may not ever play it, but I have the entire set now and I am happy.

Here is the CD for this set followed by the DVD.  I’ll never play the DVD for it is audio only which I could give a toss about. 

And to prove my undying love for Thick As A Brick, I loved it so much as a kid, that I actually wrote the entire song lyrics on an actual brick.  And funnier yet, is sixty five years after writing those lyrics on the brick, I still have it in my music room.  Back then I believed I was an actual concept artist and if I had a crazy idea, I actually enacted it.  (I had a mobile made out of actual bagworms, I had one of my favorite 45 labels all hand drawn by myself.  Then i became a drug addict and threw away my talents for a quick thrill and now I’m just another old man who looks like a Vietnam vet--I was a draft dodger, but I have adopted the look of a ‘Nam vet.)  Check out my original Thick As A Brick brick below.  The only one that is in proper order is the first photo. 

I was an artist (or so I believed) and I drew with India ink and had pens with metal nibs which is how I wrote the words on the brick.  That explains why the ink is still as apparent today as it was back in 1972 when I was my version of a conceptual artist.
