Fairy Tale Allusions in Yugioh 5Ds

So I was rewatching 5Ds and Akiza's duel against the knight dude got me thinking about the fairy tale allusions in her design and arc, and thinking about it more got me to realize that 5Ds actually has a lot of loose fairy tale allusions throughout it. So here are just a couple of the ones I noticed:

Akiza in general: Akiza's first duel of the series was already really heavy with the knight vs. witch symbolism. It also got me thinking about the "Princess, Witch, and Prince" theme from Revolutionary Girl Utena. A very basic rundown of what Utena says on it is that people will try to sort women into a box of good (Princess) or bad (Witch) based on how much they conform to the concept of what a girl should be like, a good Princess has to trade independence for protection from a Prince, any girl that doesn’t agree is a Witch. Problem is that no woman is ever just one of those things at a time, and Akiza definitely isn't. She is at first feared for her power, labelled the evil Black Rose Witch, and attempts to find comfort and safety in her "Prince" (Sayer). Only when she meets Yusei and the gang and finds acceptance from them and her parents do we see that she's actually a very kind girl. And even then, she doesn't go trading one Prince for another, she's never as reliant on Yusei as she was with Sayer and maintains her independence. Also just her deck in general carries the theme with fairy tale-like imagery (roses, knights, witches, fairies, and a dragon).

Akiza + Yusei: These two are basically Beauty and the Beast. I am a major faithshipping fan, but even if you take out the romantic aspects, it still fits. Yusei being Beauty and Akiza being the Beast for obvious reasons. The scene with Yusei waking Akiza in the hospital also gives major Sleeping Beauty vibes as well (this scene also owns my soul).

The rose imagery also still fits with both of them.

Yusei: He's Cinderella: he's a poor boy, goes to a ball that he wasn't supposed to go to (Neo Domino), has to leave at midnight (gets arrested), but leaves behind a "glass slipper" (the mark of the Crimson Dragon) that makes it so that the prince (Godwin) can track him down and give him another shot at freedom (not for altruistic purposes of course, but it still fits).

Jack and Carly: Scoopshipping are The Little Mermaid. The mermaid (Carly) falls in love with the prince (Jack), but for certain reasons, they cannot be together. Said mermaid makes a deal, by trading her soul, she gains legs (Dark Signer abilities + duel runner) which allows her a second chance to go after the prince. But the prince rejects her proposal (because she's undead and evil now), and the mermaid concedes. But being unable to hold up her end of the deal, she turns into sea foam and dies (turns into dust and dies).

Leo and Luna: Luna's deck already has a loose fairy forest type theme (and in the manga, has a Fairy Tale archetype). I want to say they're Hansel and Gretel. Has the same beats of two siblings getting lost in the woods (Luna with her spirit world adventure, Leo dueling Devack with "Closed Forest" up). But most of it comes from their duel with Devack, in which Hansel (Leo) stalls the witch (Devack) for as long as possible until Gretel (Luna) can kill the witch by pushing him into the oven (win the duel). You could also say that Luna's arc of freeing Ancient Fairy Dragon has elements of Rapunzel (saving the princess from the witch that locked her up).

Those are at least the ones I noticed. I doubt all of them were intentional but it's interesting when you make the connections. Let me know if there's any I missed because I'm not done with my rewatch yet and don't have anything for Crow. Feel like Team Satisfaction and Neo Domino City have Wizard of Oz parallels, but haven't got enough info to say how yet.

Just for fun, I have been comparing the three "main cinematic corpuses" when it comes to fairy tales in American media, the three most famous series of movies (or movie-like features) tackling fairytales as a group. Disney's animated classics, the Faerie Tale Theater series, and the Cannon Movie Tales. Each a good reflexion of what people of America usually consider the "main core" of fairytales. (I also looked into Disney's un-made projects, since it reveals the company's intentions and perception of fairytales)

Results: the most recurring fairytales, present in all three of these groups, include Snow-White, Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast, Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, The Frog Prince, The Emperor's New Clothes, Rumpelstiltskin and Puss in Boots.

On the second place, present in two of the groups only: Rapunzel, Jack and the Beanstalk, the Three Little Pigs, The Snow Queen, Cinderella, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, Pinocchio and The Pied Piper of Hamelin, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, The Emperor's Nightingale.

More unique fairytales include The Twelve Dancing Princesses, Rip van Winkle, The Princess who had never laughed, The Boy who left Home to find out about the Shivers, Thumbelina, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, The Princess and the Pea, The Sorcerer's Apprentice, the "B'rer Tales". (I did include fairytale-like short stories but tried to avoid some larger works like The Wind in the Willows, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Mary Poppins or The Wizard of Oz).

It does fit quite well with what Americans usually perceive as the "regular fairytale canon" - with a few exceptions such as the absence of the Three Billy Goats Gruff, which was for a very long time the only Norse fairytale known to the USA.

hi it's me again this might be too much of an ask but do you think it would be possible to do a list of all the allusions that Salem is/has? not her own personal ones (rapunzel etc.) but the role she has in other people's stories (I ask because I made a joke to someone about hansel and gretel and went "hazel and gretchen" -> "salem is the witch to hazel's hansel in a world where neither hansel nor gretel survives" which also factors into the "gretchen is the spring maiden and died during Summer's Mission" theory in which case raven would be her witch) not just all the ones where she's The Witch (archetype) but also other antagonists or roles like the wolf to ruby and summer (wherein summer is both the grandmother and the woodcutter) or the fairy godmother to cinder if that's too much to ask of you I understand in which case I'll have to make a chart with my own red string and thumbtacks

sherlock holmes: - watts is dr. watson (but evil) - salem is holmes (but evil) - mumbles. cinder is adler (outmaneuvers them both)

the scorpion and the...: - tyrian is the scorpion - "f. pickerel" is a frog - qrow is also a frog - salem is the turtle

little red riding hood: - ruby is little red - the Idea Of Summer Rose is the mother - the Real Summer is the big bad wolf + the huntsman - salem is the grandmother - witches can be right giants can be good etc - the key here is that the grandmother is the goal; ruby is trying to beat salem. the wolf is the obstacle; summer joined salem. the huntsman is the resolution; summer joined salem for a good reason.

What interests me about these fairy tale redesigns (especially for the popular/well known stories) is that they already have existing interpretations, so my challenge is to put something new out there, which is such a fun exercise for me to try to create the most interesting design (to me) and make it feel fresh somehow! I would be interested in drawing some of the lesser known stories as well, especially if they have a smaller cast of characters. It just means less for me to design and draw haha

Some of the fairy tales on my list include, but may not be limited to:

Hans Christian Andersen

- snow queen, wild swans, the real princess/princess and the pea, the swine herd, little match girl

Brothers Grimm

- snow white , twelve dancing princesses, frog Prince, goose girl, Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel, red cap, rumpelstiltskin, Cinderella, seven ravens, Snow White and rose red

I’d also like to draw two different versions of some fairy tales (ex, Charles Perrault’s Cinderella/Sleeping Beauty vs the Grimm versions, Perrault’s Beauty and the Beast vs the Villeneuve/Beaumont versions) because their story differences interest me enough to feel like they warrant different character designs and because I want to have my cake and eat it too, by getting to design them “twice” lol.

And there’s also literary tales that don’t originate from folk tales (?) that are on my list that I’m really excited to draw designs for, like:

- the wizard of Oz, Alice in wonderland, Peter Pan, the nutcracker, Pinocchio

If there’s fairy tales/stories I’ve also missed that maybe people are really interested to see and let me know of, I might draw for those too! I didn’t expect these to get much attention/interest truthfully but it makes me happy others are enjoying them because it certainly gives me joy working on them!

"Faerie Tale Theatre" Posthumous Reunion: The Stars' Final Resting Places

Some people might think I'm obsessed with death. A minor hobby of mine is to research celebrities' final resting places, via the website Find a Grave and the YouTube channel Hollywood Graveyard. And I like perusing themed guides to famous graves. For example, Hollywood Graveyard's videos themed to Christmas, Halloween, the cast and crew of The Wizard of Oz, cast and crew members of The Twilight Zone, etc., or Find A Grave's "Posthumous Reunion" pages for famous movie and TV show casts, sports teams, etc.

I decided to create a similar guide for the cast of Shelley Duvall's Faerie Tale Theatre. Sadly, all too many stars of that cult classic series are no longer with us. Probably the funnest thing about RWBY is the fact that all of the characters have some form of initial inspiration. They have their own stories and different personalities that make them their own characters, sure, but it’s generally pretty easy to guess who’s based on what from their designs, backstories, and/or fighting styles.

It also leads to a very fun way of describing the series: Little red riding hood and her friends, Snow White, Beauty and the Beast (who’s both at the same time), Goldilocks, Joan of Arc, Thor, Achilles, and Mulan are trained by the Wizard of Oz to fight the brothers Grimm, Cinderella, Aladdin, Hermes, Hansel, Scorpion (from the Scorpion and the Frog), Watson, and Rapunzel.

It's fuckin great actually.

Note: Ten favorite monsters, part seven. Part six. To be clear, do to past confusion, these are not lists of monsters I’d bang. Adult-content creator =/= turned-on 24/7.  ._.  Sometimes I just like to talk about character design and review media I like.

I pretty much like every kind of dragon, from friendly to terrifying. If we’re going off of scary, my favorite’s maybe from The Mists of Avalon. A lot of my fave monsters are literary, but don’t have official art. :(

1. Cat in the Hat from The Cat in the Cat

The Cat in the Hat’s more enjoyable if you view it as demonic horror. There’s a lot of elements I like. Quirky architecture, jokes that go over kids’ heads, goofy magic companion, fun costumes. Yet it’s not a good movie, even by my standards. Audrey Geisel was so disgusted by it, any plans for future live-action adaptations of Theodor’s works were nixed.

I’m kind of glad TCITH was the bad live-action, early ‘00s Seuss movie instead of How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Imagine how horrifying they could have made the Grinch.

2-4. “Girly girl” dragons

Barbie As Rapunzel: I have the Penelope plushie, whose design I actually prefer to the movie’s.

Dragon Tales: Before FIM Fluttershy, Cassie was THE shy pink and yellow creature. Dragon Land’s just one of various portal fantasy realms I wanted to visit so badly as a tot. Still do.  

Raya and the Last Dragon: People were way critical of Sisu’s design, calling it Elsa’s scalesona. Like Disney hasn’t reused/referenced old designs, jokingly or not. Not that their human(oid) designs are always unique… But Ghibli gets more leniency in that regard. (Haku’s a great dragon design, btw.)

5. the Moving Finger from Nightmares & Dreamscapes

Horror doesn’t have to be complicated to be effective.

6. Jean Jacket from Nope

Take elements of UFOlogy, meteorology, marine biology, and animal exploitation, then produce the most terrifying movie monster ever.

7. Stuff from The Stuff

Metaphor for frozen yogurt? Diet food craze?

8. Scary Lion from The Teletubbies

A good example of how audio can determine whether something is cute or terrifying. 

9. Wild Things from Where the Wild Things Are

One elementary art class, we got to make our own chimeric Wild Things. Wish I knew where mine was. They’re grotesque, like to party, and actually pretty wholesome.

10. subway station from The Wiz

The Wiz is an interesting localization of The (Wonderful) Wizard of Oz. Garland!Dorothy is taken from Kansas to a mostly unfamiliar fantastical land. (I say “mostly,” because some of the Ozians have Kansan counterparts.) Ross!Dorothy is taken from NYC to fantastical NYC.

Originally, I considered using the book Kalidahs ‘cause I love mix-’n’-match critters. Then I watched this scene. That and the Munchkins coming out of graffiti like ghosts out of chalk outlines was oneiric as fuck. Anyway, the station isn’t just a liminal space, but another architectural monster. The train itself never appears, but we see trash bins and columns advance on Dorothy and co. There’s seemingly non-automated gates and prehensile electrical wires. Also, that peddler with his growing marionettes…

Note: The pic for “The Moving Finger” is actually from the show Monsters, but I only found out it was adapted after deciding to include it. Nightmares & Dreamscapes has one of my favorite covers, even if it’s deceptive. No scarecrow stories.

Unfortunately, the last gif can’t convey the awesome liminal horror that is the Ozified Hoyt–Schermerhorn Streets station. Fun fact, it was also used in The Warriors.

Cinderella 2015 is the best live action Disney princess movie

Here's why:

Storytelling: This live action remake didn't feel like a remake of the animated movie. There was some stuff here and there, but it felt like it was another adaptation of the fairytale. Both movies were adapted from the 17th century fairytale by Charles Perrault. His version is the version that is universally well known. This is the version with the fairy godmother, the glass slippers, and the stroke of midnight. The animated version is a retelling of it, while the 2015 version of it feels more like it follows along with the fairytale. Some references from the animated movie are obviously the characters. They were subtle, and that's a good thing.

There were the scenes with her pink dress. In the animated movie, the mice create her dress from her mother's old patterns as this is what she wanted. In the 2015 version, they worked together with Cinderella. When her dress was ripped by the step sisters, it wasn't overly dramatic like in the animated movie. But she was still sad none the less. The overall tone wasn't a radfem or terf take on Cinderella. This was made during a time when radfems were rejecting Disney princesses and femininity.

Costumes: The costumes in the 2015 version of Cinderella were completely different from the animated movie. Cinderella's maid dress was the dress she wore when she first met the Tremaine family. The step sisters' costumes were made to look like the animated movie, but with a unique twist. The outfits for Lady Tremaine were awesome! Even her casual outfits were great. Like the animated ball gown, the 2015 Cinderella ball gown is iconic in its own way. They both have a timeless feel to them, as is the standard for Disney princess dresses and outfits. Prince Kitt had a very handsome and distinguished color palette. Speaking of color palettes

Set Design and Color Palette: The sets and color palettes for the 2015 version of Cinderella were beautiful. They didn't feel like a copy of the sets from the animated movie. The colors for the costumes were different as well. Especially her ball gown. Like Rapunzel, people forget that in the animated movie, her ball gown was silver. But people are used to seeing her in a blue dress. But even so, the 2015 ball gown was obviously much different. Even Kingdom Hearts portrayed her with her silver gown. Disney, at the time, decided not to give into the edgelords who have only read the bastardized Grimms version, and instead, they listened to the original author. The Tremaine house or what used her father's house feels like a whimsical country home. The castle felt like a dream. Even the castle garden was beautiful! The overall design of it all was truly magical.

With the upcoming Snow White remake, it's going to fail for a multitude of reasons. Disney princesses are badass in their own right. No, Rapunzel is not a Girlboss. Her goal was to see the lanterns. Even during her adventure, she didn't treat anyone terribly. In 2015 and even now, people are tired of Disney princess shaming. Especially now. Whereas in 2015, it was perfectly fine to dunk on them.

Not Dark: I previously stated that the movie felt like it was another adaptation of the Charles Perrault fairytale. His version isn't dark. In fact, a lot of the original fairytales of Disney movies weren't actually dark. The Brothers Grimm only collected them and made their own changes. I read some of them in high school, and they didn't seem very dark to me. Maleficent in my IMHO did the whole dark fairytale theme right. Alice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz original stories don't seem dark to me either. Once Upon a Time sort of did this as well, but it felt right. Even Emerald City on NBC did the same thing as well. The original fairytale of Beauty and the Beast doesn't feel dark as well. But with the live action version of Beauty and the Beast, Disney caved into the edgelords. Beauty And The Beast is my first favorite Disney princess movie, and I wanted to like it, but I just couldn't. It felt like a complete rip off of its animated counterpart. Tangled is my second favorite Disney princess movie, and I would hate to see it become a live action remake. Even the original fairytale of Rapunzel doesn't feel dark like the others.

Someone on reddit said that a majority of the fairytales created into movies by Disney were basically Disneyfied until the Grimms got their hands on them. No, Charles Perrault is not responsible for making Cinderella lame as he was the actual author. The only reason why people say this is because it's not dark and edgy. Making dark fairytale themed pieces of media is fine as long as it's not trying to claim that classic fairytales were originally dark. Along with shitting on the Disney versions.
