if we’ve gotta live underground and everybody’s got cancer/ will poetry be enuf?  // Eisa Davis to Ntozake Shange
         dear ntozake,
I got sacks of mercury under the skin beneath my eyes either cried too much or i’m abt to the cool war’s burnin up my retina again does poetry start where life ends? i know i’m supposed to be cool: i wear corrective lenses that feature high definition tragedy. baby in the dumpster       ethnic cleansing assassinations       multinational mergers i’m supposed to shake my head write a poem believe in ripples. but i ain’t cool. i emit inhuman noises i imagine terrorist acts as i flick my imaginary ash onto the imaginary tray i imagine going insane with a purpose and writing it down feels sorta unnecessary does poetry end where life begins? berkeley girl       black girl        red diaper baby born of the blood of the struggle but with reaganomics and prince pickin up steam in ‘81 nothing came between me and my calvins 10 yrs old       unpressed hair       playin beethoven readin madeleine l’engle       got scared in my pants when i heard this girl testifying ‘TOUSSAINT’ in the black repertory group youth ensemble i was just sittin in a rockin chair pretendin to be 82 and talkin like I knew all bout langston’s ‘rivers’
i wasn’t as good as her and i definitely wadn’t cool so i gave up drama and decided to bake soufflés zake you wda beat me up in the playground if we’da grown up together and you did eighth grade       ‘he dropped em’ at the regional oratorical competition i saw another fly honey rip it this time it’s ‘a nite with beau willie brown’ i was bleedin on the ground i became yours no more soufflés i jacked for colored girls right off my mama’s shelf my mama fania who was sweatin with you and raymond sawyer and ed mock and halifu osumare dancin on the grass       back in the day in you i found a groove never knew i had one like that did that monologue over and over alone in my room my bunk bed the proscenium arch 13 yrs old       screamin and cryin abt my kids gettin dropped out a window didn't know a damn thing about rivers but i knew abt my heart fallin        five stories you were never abbreviated or lower case to me you just pimped that irony that global badass mackadocious funkology you not only had hígado you had ben-wa balls in yr pussy
betsey brown on my godmother's couch nappy edges in mendocino at the mouth of big river spell #7 after the earthquake in silverlake the love space demands had to be in brooklyn yr poems are invitations to live in yr body love letters yr admirers dream they coulda written themselves no one cd find a category that was yr size blackety black but never blacker than thou you teased me into sassiness when i had none to speak of made profane into sacred but never formed a church sanctified women's lives whether we were reading nietzsche or a box of kotex we were magical and regular you many-tongued st louis woman of barnard and barcelona you left us the residue of yr lust left us to wander life as freely as sassafrass cypress and indigo and even the unedumacated could get yr virtuosity cuz you always fried it up in grease you built an aqueduct from lorraine hansberry's groundwater and it bubbled straight to george c wolfe you never read what the critics said and you scrunched up the flesh between yr eyebrows like everybody else in my family
but zake is poetry enuf?
i beg the question cuz you grew me up you    and adrienne kennedy     and anna deavere smith and all my mothers you blew out the candles on my 26th so when there's mercury under the skin beneath my eyes and the world ain't so cool do you write a poem or a will?
like leroi jones said     if bessie smith had killed some white people she wouldn't have needed that music so do we all write like amiri baraka does or do we all get our nat turner on?
i beg the question cuz i wanna get my life right do some real work and i really don't want to kill any white folk i mean     can we talk abt this maybe it's just my red diaper that's itchin but i still got that will to uplift the race sans bootstraps or talented tenths or paper bag tests this time we uplift the human race and i know the rainbow might be but is poetry enuf?
it's a naive question but i'm old enuf to ask them once in a while if we do finally unload the canon clean it out stock up on some more colorful balls ain't we only gettin the ones that are available at a store near you? doesn't the market end up setting the new standards anyway? is poetry enuf if it ain't sellin? if ain't nobody readin it? can poetry keep a man     who can't read from droppin his kids out a window?
and how can i call a ceasefire to this cool war in stanzas of eights when we've declared poetry a no fly zone? we have learned to protect it and its potential politics like a mother shoot down anyone who might overdetermine a poem's meaning (while we poets divebomb everyone else's politics with impunity like we're the United States or something)
if poetry is just poetry we save it from the conservatives but doesn't that mean it's of no use to the progressives?
is poetry enuf? cuz that's all i'm doin. makin up stories    on stage     on the page keepin the beat and that's all my friends are doin and that's what a lot of folks my age are doin
but if we've gone and burnt up everything in the sky if there's nothin else to eat but landfill stroganoff if we've gotta live underground and everybody's got cancer will poetry be enuf?
my aunt angela says i can do my thang and keep swinging left hooks to oppression if i stay up stay into it stay involved just one form of praxis will do. it's just my guilt that thinks i need twenty-two what's enuf?
shouldn't i (or somebody) be our secular bodhisattva become a real power player but skip the talk show can't we stabilize, rekindle collectives and cooperatives and collaborations therapeutic communities that double as creative juggernauts a publishing house     a theatre where the plays cost less than the movies get the neighborhood coven back together take dance breaks in the cubicles sing until the flourescent lights burst into snow i ask you because you changed me zake you changed thousands of women and i know poetry can't be enuf if you drunk
i ain't tryin ta walk off wid alla yr stuff and i got nuttin but love for ya so that's why i gotta know i'm sittin on my bed encircled by every book you've ever published they're open like fans marking pages with the flint of genius all i want is for this circle to grow so tell me:
is this where poetry and life are twins? i felt so crumpled up when i started writing you poetry seemed so useless and dingy next to all the bright red bad news but now that the poem is over i feel wide open like an infant of the spring just tell me how to feed this light to my responsibilities and poetry just might be enuf           love           eisa

Reading and Response #3- Projection: Vanishing and Becoming by Sean Cubitt
Sean Cubitt dives into some of the fundamentals of drawing and painting. He examines these principles and how they translate into video and film. Cubitt begins his article by historically diving into the Buddhist tale of the origin of art and how it compares to Pliny’s story of the origins of paining and use of light and shadows. These tales go into the origin of use of line, light, reflection, shadow, and projection. Projection is a very important word in this article. From artists projecting light and shadows onto prints, as well as lines and colors; Cubitt also explores the metaphorical meaning of projection. How we as humans use projection. It is vital in childhood and human development. Think back to when we were children and could not communicate properly with words we would have to project emotion to get across what we were needing. Projection could be literal, metaphorical, implied, etc. In video art you are able to project all of the above. With the creation of film and cameras artist had the ability to visually project their message. Rather that message be direct or implied, the artist had more resources at their fingertips to create their visual work. Art is considered a way to preserve. Video would be the ultimate preservation tool. To capture a moment in time, forever. A way to outlive Father Time. This made me think if this is something video artists consider when starting their project. Is that part of the purpose of using video? For this particular artwork to “cheat death”. With today’s technology like the internet and media platforms, even if a video is deleted does it really “die” or does it live forever in some spaces? Do artists consider that aspect today?
5 examples of time based art/video art/film/cinematic artist:

William Kentridge (South African, born 1955). The Refusal of Time, 2012. Five-channel digital video installation, black-and-white and color, sound, 30 min. Steel megaphones, and a breathing machine ("elephant"), dimensions variable. Jointly owned by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, 2013. Purchased for The Metropolitan Museum of Art with Roy R. and Marie S. Neuberger Foundation Inc. and Wendy Fisher Gifts and The Raymond and Beverly Sackler 21st Century Art Fund (2013.250). © William Kentridge. All rights reserved.

Video Flag, 1995, Nam June Paik. Pictured on view at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in 1996. “Video Flag’s enormous bank of 70 14 in. CRT monitors represents the American flag’s stars and stripes through flashing imagery of technological advances and iconic moments from American politics: news stills, rotating shots of the State of Liberty, scrolling streams of zeros and ones (the binary language of computers), and a morphing sequence portraying U.S. president portraits, from Harry S. Truman to Bill Clinton. The always-present image of the flag serves as a backdrop against which these individual cultural events, personas, and technologies are experienced, recalled, and understood.” https://www.si.edu/tbma/work/video-flag
Tumblr media
Pipilotti Rist, Open my Glade, Times Square, 2016. “For instance, he work of Pipilotti Rist is notable in the proportions that Video Art has taken in recent decades. In 2016, she was selected to exhibit her work in Times Square. The artwork consisted of 62 video screens, monumental in size, right in the middle of all the advertising screens in Times Square. On these 62 screens, looping over several days, numerous videos were shown. There, in the middle of one of the most emblematic squares of capitalism, she smashed her face against a window that was placed just a few centimeters from the camera lens. Her face deformed, her makeup spread out, she questioned, brutally, the gaze that the spectator has on feminine beauty.” https://blog.artsper.com/en/a-closer-look/what-is-video-art/

Looking for Langston, 1988. Photograph: Bfi/Sankofa Film/Kobal/Rex/Shutterstock
Isaac Julien | Looking for Langston, 1989
“More than a tribute to the American poet Langston Hughes and the Harlem Renaissance, Julien’s film is a powerful meditation on the history of black gay desire, the intersection of queer and black politics with art and activism, poetry and prejudice. The action plays out against a soundtrack mixing 1920s jazz and anachronistic 1980s disco.” https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2020/oct/17/warhol-steve-mcqueen-a-history-of-video-art-barbara-london
Tumblr media
Lorna, 1984, interactive videodisk installation, infinite duration, video stills
“With Lorna, Lynn Hershman Leeson created the first art work that used laserdisk technology. Exploiting the interactive capabilities of the medium, the artist enables users to explore and intervene in the world of an agoraphobic woman named Lorna.” https://www.lynnhershman.com/project/interactivity/

Our heroes:  Balance work and family.
What important things did we learn about:
Callen:  Getting married. Sam:   Like his father, thought he’d live his life with his wife in their forever home. Kensi:  Adopting.   Deeks:  In stereo. Fatima:  Thinks her mother will be unbearable after minor foot surgery. Rountree: Testifying against LAPD. Kilbride:  Meditating.
What not so important things did we learn about:
Callen:  Cursed by Arkady. Sam:   Warrior monk. Kensi:  Happy to see Rosa despite bad circumstances. Deeks:  All lawyer-y with Rosa’s case worker. Fatima:  Rountree’s friend. Rountree:  Friends mean something to him. Kilbride:  Passionate, not grumpy.
Where in the world is Henrietta Lange?  Not a mention in the 300th episode but at the end, while Callen was looking at the ring, the camera moved where you could see Hetty’s well-lit office just over his shoulder.
Who's down with OTP:  They are becoming parents.  Maybe to two.  All is fine.
Who's down with BrOTP:  Sam was genuinely happy Callen was getting married.  Real joy.  Callen was looking forward to hanging out with Sam and Raymond.  All is fine.  Did like Rountree saying that Fatima was his friend and he talks to her about what’s important to him.  It was a nice moment.
Fashion review:  Blue plaid button down shirt for Callen.  Another day, another day of Sam in a black long-sleeve tee.  Off-white long-sleeve boatneck tee-shirt for Kensi.  Pale blue henley for Deeks.  Fatima wears a grey turtleneck under a coral jacket.  Rountree starts the episode in court clothes with a dark blue suit, white dress shirt and dark blue tie.  Working the case, he joins Sam in the black long-sleeve tee-shirt club with a pale blue and brown plaid jacket.  Medium blue suit for the Admiral with a pale blue dress-shirt with a diamond pattern and dark blue tie.  In the field, the Admiral has a cool, black commando looking outfit.
Music:  “Balalaika Party” by Tele Music was playing at the Russian restaurant.  “Just One of Those Things” by Tony Bennett was playing in the Admiral’s office and watching the team end their day.
Any notable cut scene:  There was a five-minute short video about the 300th episode.  The fellow with the microphone talking about the “300-episode club” is the network’s head of entertainment.  He’s also the guy who puts out some of the Sunday night NFL related delays tweets.  R. Scott Gemmill talks about working on ER before NCIS: Los Angeles.  He was afraid he would never have a “family” like that again.  Chris O’Donnell spoke about the program coming at the perfect time for him with five children in their formative years and wanting to live in one city.  It has become his favorite role and the best job he ever had.
Frank Military said the program started off as a big hit but they are getting to rarified air with 200 and 300-episodes.  LL Cool J says the program lasted probably three-times longer than the old typical program where the hope would be to get to 100 episodes.  LL Cool J shared Frank Military’s “rarified air” line.
Next up is Medalion Rahimi thinks it is great to be part of something so long-lasting in a time where nothing lasts.  Caleb Castille is grateful – a lot of people have put a lot of work into this.
LL Cool J jokes around about doing a lot of things 300 times.  Chris O’Donnell busted LL Cool J’s chops 300 times.  Eric Christian Olsen thinks Deeks has done a lot of things 300 times.  He’s tried to create some Deeks catch phrases and thinks he has said “son of a bitch” 300 times.  Since they can’t “swear-swear”, it is perfect.  LL Cool J talks about killing 300 people on the show.  ECO thinks he’s told 900 jokes.
ECO talks about how the show has impacted his life.  13-years is a college education, a PhD and residence and years more experience.  When the program started, he didn’t have a family.  While some of his friends are making movies all over the world, he gets a text from his wife saying dinner is at 5:30 and though he may not make it exactly, it is pretty close.  He is happy with the work-life balance.
Chris O’Donnell never thought this would last 300 episodes.  But 300 in, everyone is still hanging around, everyone still likes each other.  Gemmill said he nearly cried when they got the season 14 pick-up because everyone gets to come back to a job they love.  “We just have fun.”
Quote:  Callen:  “We love each other.” Arkady:  “So why ruin it? Live together. Make baby. No, I cannot recommend that, either. No. Sorry. Is best for both of you.” Callen:  “Because it didn't work for you?” Arkady:  “Doesn't work for anyone.” Callen:  “That's not true.” Arkady:  “Mostly, it is.” Callen:  “You do realize this is just a considerate gesture? We don't need your blessing to get married.” Arkady:  “Of course you do” Callen:  “Of course we don't.”
Anything else:  At night, a military jet leaves from a runway at Point Magu.  Two men cut the wires into the fence near the runway.  They are spotted right away – bright lights and alarms.  The men start shooting toward the light and alarms.  One looks like he’s about to throw something when he catches fire.  He is engulfed in flames as is his partner.
Asking if his father is doing OK, Sam is bringing in moving boxes in what looks to be their new home.  Sam’s father Raymond is reminiscing about buying his first and only house with Sam’s mother but can’t remember the year. Sam fills in – 1979.  Sam’s mother said moving into their home was the happiest day of her life.  Raymond thought they’d live in that house forever…together.  Sam thought the same thing with Michelle.  Then it became too much house for one person.  Raymond thinks that’s odd coming from a man living on a boat.
Looking at Sam, Raymond can’t help to wonder what Sam’s mother would think.   Sam thinks it is time for that house to be passed to another young family who can enjoy living there just the way the Hannas did.  It would make Sam’s mother happy.  Raymond is not happy.
At the Immigration Center, Rosa is back.  Kensi and Rosa hug.  Rosa’s aunt is elderly and just had a stroke.  Now living in hospice care, the aunt can’t take care of Rosa anymore.  This changes Rosa’s status.  While Kensi and Rosa sit nearby, Deeks makes Rosa’s argument to her caseworker.  Rosa was nearly killed coming to the US, Kensi was nearly killed with her.  The caseworker is on Rosa’s side but she doesn’t make the decision.
They talk about Pilar, whose parents were killed by gangs.  Pilar has a good case to stay in the US but that may not even work out because the court hears those stories all the time.  Since Rosa’s case isn’t as tragic – her father disappeared, her mother is ill – Rosa may be sent back.  Speaking to Kensi, Rosa thinks she can’t go back.  Without hard evidence that Rosa’s father disappeared under criminal circumstances, he could have left to start a new family, Rosa may not have any case.   Deeks asks how can they find evidence of a gang problem when the government is actively hiding the gang problem.
Rosa is heartbroken.  Living with her aunt was too good to be true.  Kensi assures Rosa that she and Deeks are going to find a way to keep her safe.  Deeks is going to file for a continuance to buy some time so he and Kensi can find evidence that Rosa is in danger if she goes home.  The problem is there are weekly deportation flights back to Guatemala.  Deeks is freaking out when Kensi joins him – Rosa could be sent home in a week.  In stereo, Kensi and Deeks ask what would happen if they adopt Rosa.  With no proof that her mother died and that her father isn’t alive, they can’t adopt Rosa as part of the international adoption system.  They have to prove she’s an orphan.
Alone in Ops, Shyla and the Admiral are watching the runway intruder catch fire on security video.  Looking around, the Admiral wants to know where everyone is.  He is told Kensi and Deeks are at the Immigration Center, Sam is moving his father into his home but will be in later in the day.  Rountree and Jordyn are giving depositions about what happened to them with their Driving While Black encounter.  Fatima is taking her mother to the doctor.   Shyla isn’t sure where Callen is but the Admiral is sure he has his own personal drama.  In fact, the Admiral thinks they should shut down for the day and have a family picnic (nice bit of foreshadowing there).  Shyla makes a mean deviled egg.  The Admiral wants everyone’s “asses” in now or he’ll start getting grumpy.  Shyla thinks he isn’t grumpy, he’s passionate.  He tells her if she keeps that up, he’ll send her back to Washington.  In a box.  Shyla laughs.
In a Russian restaurant, Arkady is reviewing a menu when Callen comes in.  Arkady is surprised to see Callen.  Callen isn’t sure why – he’s called Arkady about a dozen times.  Arkady thinks Callen has an old phone number – he changes his every month for security purposes.  Arkady wants to know if Anna is OK.  She is, Callen wants to talk.
Watching Arkady chug down a glass of something, Callen hopes isn’t vodka.  It is nastoyka, which is a flavored vodka according to Callen.  Arkady has indigestion.  He offers Callen breakfast because Callen needs to loosen up.  “Stress kills.”  Arkady calls Callen Grisha, which Callen notes is a first.  Arkady says it is Callen’s name and not a letter like “Ye”.  Callen notes “Ye” is two letters.
Rubbing his face, Arkady asks how can he help Callen.  Callen is there to talk about Anna.  Arkady is worried again that something is wrong but Callen assures him that there is nothing wrong with Anna, actually, she’s great, amazing.  Callen loves her.   Arkady shakes his head and pulls out a wad of bills.  “You need money,” he says giving the cash to Callen.  Callen says he doesn’t need money but Arkady knows every now and again people need help.  Callen wants Arkady’s blessing to marry Anna.  Arkady breaks out laughing until he sees Callen is serious.  Arkady forbids it.  “Absolutely not.”  Callen is stunned.
Fatima and Rountree arrive at the office.  He’s in his going to court clothes.  Fatima asked how the deposition went and he’s more concerned about Jordyn reliving what happened over and over again but knows that the only way LAPD will be held accountable.  Fatima tells Rountree that Jordyn is a tough cookie, just like her brother.  Rountree never saw himself as a cookie.  Rountree asks about Fatima’s mom, who needs foot surgery – she’ll be wearing a boot and having one of those little scooters.  Fatima says her mother is going to be unbearable.
In the bullpen, Shyla reviews the case.  One of the intruders is dead, the other is badly burned and in the ICU.  Neither man had ID and the burns are going to make them hard to identify.  There is no known motive and their weapons were ghost guns.  There was no vehicle found so they were either dropped off or there was a third partner who ran when the fires started.
Callen can’t believe Arkady – he thinks he’s joking.  Arkady is not.  “Is disaster waiting to happen, especially for you two.”  As the bartender pours Arkady another breakfast cocktail, Callen says he and Anna love each other.  Arkady is thrilled – live together, have babies – he’s not even big on the idea of babies.  Callen thinks just because it didn’t work for Arkady and before he can finish, Arkady says it doesn’t work for anyone.  When Callen says that’s not true Arkady tells him it is mostly true.  Annoyed, Callen tells Arkady they don’t need his blessing.  “Of course you do.”
Speaking in Russian, Arkady puts a curse on their wedding.  Callen is stunned.  Since Callen is Romani, Arkady thinks he should know about curses.  Calling that remark completely inappropriate, Callen thinks Arkady is ridiculous.  Arkady warns Callen – Anna won’t get married without his blessing.  Callen leaves.
As Raymond walks around their new home, Sam gets a call telling him to come into the office.  Sam asks what his dad thinks, Raymond thinks they need some furniture.  He wants a comfy chair.  Sam suggests a recliner with a cup holder, a heater, maybe massage.  Raymond knows Sam is teasing him but since Sam offered, he won’t take anything less.  Raymond is looking for a beer.  Sam has coffee but Raymond doesn’t drink caffeine.  With his medications, Raymond is not supposed to drink alcohol.  “God forbid I die happy.”
Packing up for work, Sam promises to pick up some light beer when he returns home.  Raymond is outraged that his “Navy frogman” son has been ruined by life in LA.  Raymond offers to go with Sam.  Sam wants his father to stay home until Mrs. Ortiz arrives.  Raymond is unhappy he’s been assigned a babysitter.  Mrs. Ortiz is there to take care of the house and make sure Raymond is doing well.  Raymond starts feeling a bit frisky until Sam says he didn’t hire her from Tinder.  “Maybe you should have.”
Kensi and Deeks are getting into the car on their way to the office.  Kensi asks if Deeks was serious about the adoption.  Deeks asks if she was.  She asked first.  Rosa needs their help – they may be the only way to keep her safe.  They are going to adopt a “child” – who is a young woman.  And even after she’s 18, Rosa will be their daughter. “A living, breathing human being who we are responsible for the rest of our lives.”  Kensi and Deeks believe things happen for a reason – Kensi thinks this is their reason.  She’s near tears.
In the area where the two men cut the fence to get to the runway, Fatima and Rountree are looking around.  There are a lot of bushes and high grass.  They can’t figure out what the men were doing breaking in.  If they were going to rob Point Magu’s armory, how much could they steal as two men without a vehicle?  There has to be one other suspect – they needed to get away.  The PCH is nearby but far too busy.  With the base near farmland, maybe they used a farm-related vehicle to fit in.  Maybe an RV.  With Shyla checking all the traffic cameras in the area, they should have a vehicle ID soon.  Rountree thinks they should also tell the coroner to give them a call if anyone picks up the dead man’s remains.
In the hospital parking lot, Callen is waiting for Sam.  Sam was hoping Callen was retiring.  Callen wonders if that was for his sake or for Sam’s.  Sam goes with both.  Callen asks about Sam’s father and Sam admits things aren’t going great.  Sam thinks there is a 50/50 chance one of them kills the other by the end of the week.  Callen’s money is on Raymond though he may give Arkady a “dirt nap” first.  When Sam looks puzzled, Callen tells him he asked Arkady’s blessing to marry Anna.  Sam is delighted and congratulates Callen.  Callen says Arkady said no and Sam is shocked.
Walking into the hospital, Sam thinks Arkady is half-crazy.  “Only half?” Callen asks.  Sam wants to know what Anna said but Callen hasn’t told her.  Sam thinks Callen should sic Anna on Arkady – he’ll change his mind quickly.  After IDing themselves at the nurses station, Callen and Sam say the John Doe has a lawyer who won’t allow visitors.  Callen and Sam ask the nurse if the lawyer left a business card.  While she’s looking, Callen and Sam can’t understand how a person who can’t be identified has legal representation.  The card belongs to Jeremy Chambers, Esq.
According to Shyla, Chambers works at Meyers, Masters and Chambers.  He specializes in civil liberties cases, especially gun related cases.  Sam wants Chambers in the boatshed.  Shyla’s tablet beeps.  The dead man’s family picked up his remains.  Callen wants Kensi and Deeks to speak to them.  When Fatima and Rountree wrap up at the crime scene, Sam wants them looking through the dead man’s apartment once a warrant comes through.
While walking the crime scene, Fatima asks Rountree if Jordyn saw Nate.  She did.  Nate’s help was made Jordyn rock solid at the deposition.  Fatima asks about Rountree.  He thought he did well at the deposition too but that’s not what Fatima was asking.  With all their cases, Rountree didn’t have time to see Nate.  Besides, he talks to her – she is his friend and that mattes to Rountree.  As a friend, Fatima would like Rountree to talk to Nate even if it is just once.  Rountree thinks this is waste of time.  “Not if we get crabcake burgers from Neptune Net when we finish,” Fatima replies.  Rountree is on-board for that.  Shyla calls, moving them from the base to the suspect’s house.
After deeply examining Callen and Sam’s business cards and calling the boatshed “the grown up Goonies”, Chambers won’t share the name of his client, who may just be a tragic victim in all this.  Callen asks again and Chambers admits he doesn’t know.  An anonymous benefactor is paying for Chambers’s services.  Sam asks Chambers if this seems unusual to him.  Chambers calls this unusual times.  Since Callen and Sam are detectives, they should detect and figure out his client’s name.  Chambers sees himself out.
Saying he hates this part, Kensi and Deeks knock on the door of the dead man’s family.  Mr. Langston, in a wheelchair, answers the door.  Kensi and Deeks offer their condolences but Langston is not interested in talking.  He gives Kensi and Deeks his attorney’s card – Jeremy Chambers.
In Ops, Shyla updates Callen and Sam on what happened to Kensi and Deeks.  The dead man is Ralph Langston.  Asked about Langston, Shyla says Langston was a drifter who worked as a mechanic, a welder, in construction.  He was dishonorably discharged from the National Guard for a drug charge.  Without a home, Langston has been living out of an RV near Point Magu.
Walking up to the RV, Fatima and Rountree pull out their weapons and check the vehicle’s perimeter.  In Ops, Sam says Langston was technically blown up by an explosive, he wants the bomb squad to check out the RV first.  Sam calls Fatima, ordering her to pull back- the RV could be booby trapped.  Unfortunately, the call comes just as Rountree opens the door.  Fatima pushes Rountree and herself out of the way but the RV is gone.
In the back of an ambulance, Fatima and Rountree are being treated.  Both have bits of debris on their clothes with some significant soot.  After speaking with the bomb squad, Sam tells Callen the bomb in the RV matches the device Langston had when he set himself on fire.  This was either the world’s most intense security device of someone rigged up the RV to explode when Langston got back from whatever he was doing on the base.  Neither version is encouraging to Sam.  Callen wants to send Fatima and Rountree home – both are having a hard time hearing and he thinks they got their bells rung.  Sam takes explosions personally and thinks neither Fatima or Roundtree will want to sit this out.  Fatima is picking bits of debris out of Rountree’s hair.
In Ops, Shyla was able to access Langston’s digital footprint.   Langston is divorced, no kids.  He is big into conspiracy theories and owns a number of guns.  “Dumb and dangerous,” Shyla notes, just like her last few dates.  Nobody found anything like a weapon in the debris.  Someone cleared out the RV before wiring it to blow.  Based on his records, Langston spoke numerous times recently to James Miller and William Baker.  Callen thinks one of them has to be the injured man.  Miller has been offline since the incident while Baker is running a Go Fund Me for a friend badly burned in a military training accident.
Callen wants to know about Baker.  Baker grew up on a ranch, his parents raised horses and left it to him when they died.  Based on social media, Baker isn’t raising horses, he’s training a wannabe militia.  Sam wants Kensi and Deeks to sit tight on the farm, he and Callen are on their way.  Kensi and Deeks are hanging tight by the farm.
The Admiral is sitting with his eyes closed, in the far off, comfortable chair in his office.  There is music playing in the background – Tony Bennett’s “Just One of Those Things”.  Shyla lets herself in but is confused by what she sees.  Keeping his eyes closed, the Admiral wants to know why she’s there.  She apologizes for waking him.  He wasn’t sleeping, he was meditating.  His doctor says it will help center him.  “Do I look centered?”  Shyla thinks he looks dead-centered.  As someone who meditates regularly, Shyla thinks he should try without the music.  The Admiral thinks she should meditate her way, he’ll mediate his way, especially since “Mr. Bennett” centers him.
Shyla requests to go in the field and this is not a Starbucks run.  Another NCIS Agent can run Ops and it doesn’t matter anyway – the ranch is off the grid.  With Fatima and Rountree unavailable, Shyla wants to help.  “Let’s go.”  Shyla didn’t want to drag the Admiral into the field but he doesn’t want her to have all the fun.  He orders her to secure the chopper.  The only thing he hates more than armed insurrectionists is LA traffic keeping him from them.
Watching the ranch from a hill, Kensi and Deeks reassure each other about Rosa’s adoption. Kensi suggests they do the same with Pilar.  Deeks wonders about going from no children to two.  Rosa and Pilar need a home, they have the space and Rosa and Pilar would have each other.  They both have bonds with the girls and with both of them being at risk of being sent back – why is Deeks worried?  “Besides being responsible for the lives of two young women?”  Deeks is concerned about the whole white savior look.  In his “mushy, mushy heart”, Kensi knows Deeks wants this.
A woman screams running from the ranch, Kensi and Deeks go into the barn where the woman ran.  They find a woman in the a stall, seemingly tied up.  Seemingly, because when Kensi tries to help her, the woman pulls a gun.  Deeks has his weapon pointed on the woman but there are three men, including William Baker, with their guns pointed at Deeks.  Kensi and Deeks surrender.
Tied up to Deeks, Kensi tells William Baker that they are in so much trouble.  As she keeps talking, Callen and Sam run up near the barn.  Callen asks how many armed people are in the bar, Kensi works it into her conversation with Baker – four.  Deeks talks about the inside of the barn so everyone knows what they are facing.  As Callen and Sam make their way to the door, a guard outside the barn on top of an RV starts shooting.  Baker’s men are ordered to help protect the building.
Kensi tells Baker that her team is on their way in.  Baker’s only hope is to surrender.  He thinks his fight is worth dying for.  More shooting goes on when a helicopter arrives.  That worries the woman with Baker.  Baker isn’t worried – he has an anti-aircraft weapon to shoot the chopper out of the sky.  The red Porsche pulls up with Rountree shooting out of the open window.  This gives Callen and Sam a chance a chance to take out the shooter on the RV roof and Baker’s other me.
When Baker sets up to fire his weapon at the helicopter, the Admiral shoots him with a rather big gun.  Baker fires the weapon but he’s falling and the artillery goes into a truck, causing a big explosion.  This upsets the woman who still is guarding Kensi and Deeks.  With the shooting over, Deeks tells the woman that the silence is the sound of defeat.
Re-racking his weapon, the Admiral announces that Karma is a bitch.
Callen, Sam, Fatima and Rountree round up the rest of Baker’s men.
The woman watching Kensi and Deeks drags Kensi to her feet and tries to use Kensi as a hostage as the Admiral and Shyla enter the barn.  Shyla means business.  So does Kensi, who sweeps her legs under the woman’s, causing her captor to fall to the ground.  Deeks is impressed by Kensi’s “Karate Kid” move on the bad guys.  Cutting Kensi and Deeks loose, the Admiral wants to clean up the mess and go home.
In the armory, Rountree admits his ears are still ringing.  He wants to know how long this will last.  Fatima tells him it took three days to clear up after her last Prodigy concert.  Fatima thinks it is perfect night to watch “Yojimbo”.  Of course Rountree isn’t familiar with it and can’t understand how they can watch it with hearing issues.  The film is subtitled.  She asks Rountree if he likes martial arts movies and lists a few.  Again, as his friend, has she been paying attention – he doesn’t watch anything.  They are going to order Postmates and watch a few of the films.
An annoyed Callen leaves a message for Arkady.  Sam tells Callen not to sweat it.  If there is no blessing, Anna will forbid Arkady from going to the wedding.  Callen likes the strategy.  When Callen offers to go for beers, Sam has to go home to his dad.  He does invite Callen over for a weekend hang and Callen looks forward to that.
At the Immigration Center, Kensi and Deeks brought pizza and sodas to share with Rosa.  Deeks talks about saving a couple of slices so he can eat them for breakfast and how Kensi sleepwalks and eats them.  Kensi laughs.  Rosa apologies – she not in the mood for some laughs.  Kensi tells Rosa that they are going to do everything to keep her safe.  Kensi looks at Deeks and the two share a nod.  Saying there is another thing they can try, Deeks is worried he and Kensi could be getting Rosa’s hopes up.  Rosa doesn’t have much hope left.  Kensi asks how would Rosa feel about being adopted.  Rosa gives Kensi a big hug and holds Deeks’s hand.  Deeks takes that as a yes.
Walking up to his office, Shyla sees the Admiral still in his field gear meditating to Tony Bennett with a single malt.  She smiles and leaves him.
Returning home, Sam finds Raymond with two beach chairs and a beer.  Sam asks where did he get the beer.  Raymond found a supermarket that delivered.  Looking around the house, Raymond notices they don’t have a TV.  Sam reads at night.  Calling Sam his “warrior monk”, Raymond is buying them a big TV.  He also wants some house rules.  Growing up with 52 Hanna House rules, Sam isn’t sure he can live with anymore.  Raymond needs some rules about ladies – “I’m old son, I’m not dead.”  The two laugh.
In the office, Callen looks at the engagement ring while the Admiral continues to mediate.
Kensi, Deeks and Rosa play a card game, having a great time.
In the boatshed, Fatima and Rountree are enjoying the movie and Postmates.
Sam and his father watch look through some family albums, sharing thoughts about Sam’s mom.
What head canon can be formed from here:  This was a lovely episode with an OK case – not much sleuthing here – and a great look at family for the program’s main characters.  Any scene with Arkady is a gift.  Sam, the “warrior monk”, is now sharing a house with his father.  Kensi and Deeks are adopting Rosa and maybe Pilar.  Fatima is taking care of her mother and doesn’t seem 100% happy about that.  Rountree is taking care of his sister as they take on LAPD and is 100% behind doing it.  All while working to arrest several militia members.
Episodes like this are a reminder why people who automatically pan “procedurals” don’t actually watch them.  This 300th episode wasn’t about the case, it was about the characters, their lives, their pasts and their futures.
Episode number:  Happy 300!  This is the program’s 300th episode.  The Mothership is aired their 438th episode Monday night.  The New Orleans sibling made it to 155.  The Hawai’i sibling is aired episode 25 on Monday.  The grandaddy of them all, JAG, did 227 episodes.
This was season 13th’s 20th episode.

BOXED MUSES - January 2023 Update
What are ‘Boxed Muses’ on this blog?
Boxed muses are characters I’ve written in the past who are not currently part of my active, open roster.
They can have this status for several reasons, such as them not having had any active threads in a while, or because I currently lack a writing muse for them.
Hence, they are 'in the box' rather than dropped outright.
What does this mean for characters on the list?
Firstly, I’m always very happy to take any character 'out of the box' at any time if you want to write with them! This applies whether you've written with them before, or if you want a new ship!
These characters are not available generally or publicly for 'open use' but they are available on request.
To this end, I'm also happy to do private threads on Discord with any muse from this list, or do 'one-off' threads with them at any time.
I may reblog inspo/pictures for these boxed muses whilst in the box, and they may come out of the box if I find a strong muse for them again.
The ‘boxed’ muses are:

OTHER, OLDER MUSES
I also have muses who I’ve previously written and have dropped. Again, this is either due to a combination of not having a writing muse for them and/or no active threads.
If you previously wrote with a muse who doesn’t appear on either my muses page or the boxed list above, and you’d like to write with them again, please let me know, and I’d be happy to bring them back!

December 13th, 2022 - old journal in the closet
I was rummaging through my closet for a scarf that I hadn't worn in a year. On the bottom of the bag, I found my old journal, dated from October 2019 to April 2021.
I leave all my journals at my parents home because I had moved to a different place seemingly every year. And each time I moved, I discarded much of my possessions.
The journal starts with me living in Newark. It's filled with distrust of myself. From my older eyes now I see it was just voices echoing in my head.
- October 31st, 2019 - In Neapolitan series Lenu and Lila don't see each other for years at a time. Each growing into their own persons independently. Can i say their friendship lacks depth? What is the balance between myself and how much i give of myself despite not enjoying doing so. I am not at ease.
...
In my conversations with my mother, she is specific and anecdotal. i am general and philosophical. When i ask her about the poverty of her hometown she talks of the people she knew who couldn't get out and the women who have. I ask her about the difference b/w the two. She says hardwork, a passable husband, and luck. I reply about the systematic trappings of poverty, the flow of money and capital funneled through banking systems and government owned enterprises. How common people seemed to live so terribly even in the wealthiest nation in the world. She ignores me. She lives amongst the lives of people, and i seem to only enjoy the idea of people.
...
His parents hoped he wouldn't be a criminal, serial killer, or pedophile. My parents didn't even entertain those possibilities. Letting me know that it is in me to finalize our pending family dream. To start a large corporation, to be a ceo. That to stay in corporate salary is to settle and a waste of a life and our ambitions.
- November 9th, 2019 - Harlem by Langston Hughes
what happens to a dream deferred does it dry up like a raisin in the sun or fester like a sore and then run
does it stink like rotten meat or crust and sugar over like a syrupy sweet?
maybe it just sags like a heavy load
or does it explode?
- November 12th, 2022 - `Latency read memory (1mb)
L1 cache = 0.5 ns L2 cache = 7 ns (14x L1 latency) main memory = 100 ns (20x L2, 200x L1) read 1mb from SSD (~1GB/sec) = 10 ms (4x memory)`
- November 22, 2019 - `I studied mechanical engineering so at-least 3 of my classes any given semester were physics or math related. Math had the most straightforward assignments, forthright in its formulaic repetition. Physics problems were archaic, contrived scenarios with conditions intended to simplify calculations. The first year I started, i immediately looked for answer keys.
- Dec 4th, 2019 - 1180 Raymond, a towering apartment complex. The tallest residential building in Newark, New Jersey. On its 30th floor, lights shine upwards illuminating the top four floors. A lasting symbol of Newark's well-to-do families. The building is imposing, unchanging, and telling. It says, "I will never change. Residency here is stability. It's comfort. It's lasting.
It reminds me of beauty and the beast. That era of architecture, inaccessible grandness. It belies the warmth of my apartment inside. Inside it feels like home: an isolated, clean, and thoughtful existence. On the outside a cold, unmoving and respectable exterior. The tower of 1180 Raymond embodies where my life is headed to. "
- December 11th, 2019: short stories - I had this idea for a short story. It's about if property ownership was democratically allotted, and every 10 years, land would go up for election at local municipality. We would elect landlords instead of the market. ... I like to start writing short stories. Small tweaks to society and economic structures that change how we live. I remember the Ted Chiang short story about lookism. If we were able to prohibit surgically the release of chemicals that respond to physical beauty. If we didn't' discriminate based on uncontrollable traits of physical beauty.

After 4 years, 2 months and I do not know how many days of writing, editing and re-editing, revamping, and checking for mistakes. I finish the one-shot that I want to finish so badly.
Buster Shot, a story mainly focus on the relationship between the wizard, Janaya and his guitar-playing imagomancer godsister, Corral Lynn-Foster, and how Corral play a role in some of the people from Townsville in Janaya’s life. Along the way, two more certain people Janaya and Corral known from Echo Creek are mentioned in the story.
Warning: The present in the story is before summer break ever started, so it this one-shot is a prequel to the main storyline, The Neighbours. However, the epilogue contain major spoilers of after Volume 1 of Neighbours. Please be advised.
Sienna Grey (AJ x Mee Mee), Candy Nguyen (Omi x OC), Sunny & Bryce Langston (Hugh Langston x Bubbles Utonium), and Naseem Chan (Dennis Chan x Sanjay) [all mentioned] belong to @cooltmoney95
Nebula Butterfly Lucitor (Tom Lucitor x Star Butterfly), Antoine Diaz (Kelly x Marco Diaz), Tamara Jackson (Punching Judy x Rudolph Jackson), Raymond Pedrosa (Ashley/Katnappé x Raimudo Pedrosa), Ethan Corduroy (Wendy Corduroy x Eddie Brock), Kristen and Wendy Beatles (Kuki Sanban x Wally Beatles), and Bradley McPherson (Buttercup Utonium x Dexter) [all mentioned, except for Nebula and Antoine] belong to @ej-cappy-universe
Corral Lynn-Foster (Jackie Lynn-Thomas x Frankie Foster) and Winnie Beatles (Kuki Sanban x Wally Beatles - mentioned) belong to @beanielune
Janaya A. Bloodworth-Thomason (Kyle Bloodworth-Thomason x Janna Ordonia), Holly Test (Brain Freezer x Mary Test - mentioned), Beppi Creecher (Creepie Creecher x Tarantula Boy), Mirage B. Fagry (Patrick Fagry x Stocking Anarchy), Clarence King (son of Mouscedes King x OC), and Niko Corduroy (Ethan’s little sister) belong to me

Raymond (Ray) Merriwether (born June 19, 1924 - May 23, 1911) was a prominent African American architect, real estate developer, and newspaper owner. After graduating from high school he attended barber school and served a short time in the Navy. He entered Howard University where he became president of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. He earned a BS in Civil Engineering from Howard. He moved to Seattle and began his career with the City of Seattle’s Building Department as a Structural Plan Examiner. He was the third black engineer to work in Seattle. He built his first new apartment building, the 18-unit Chrystal Arms followed by the Chrystal Plaza. These were soon followed by three more apartment buildings. He bought The Pacific Leader, a newspaper serving the African American community. As editor of the paper, he challenged racial discrimination in the city. The Pacific Leader and the NAACP led a successful campaign to get local banks to hire the first black bank teller. They pressured the Tradewell chain of grocery stores to hire black clerks and persuaded the owners of a central Seattle office building to rent to black professionals. He was a founding member of Alpha Omicron Boule of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity. He enrolled at the University of Washington and Washington State University and earned a BS in Architecture and an MS in Urban Planning. He joined Raymond Peck in establishing the firm Peck & Merriwether, Architects & Engineers. The firm had a broad range of designs that included custom homes, office buildings, hospitals, nursing homes, restaurants, apartments, warehouses, etc. Peck & Merriwether designed and built projects that contained over 260 apartment units and 630 nursing home beds for their account. Several of the apartment buildings were named in honor of black personalities: Carver House, Bethune Manor, Langston House, Charles Drew, and Kings Court. He leased the multi-million dollar convalescent homes to three young African American men. He founded a new firm, Ray Merriwether & Associates. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence #omegapsiphi #sigmapiphi https://www.instagram.com/p/Ce_VB7HrV9qDgkUwpynPJpLLcZ68DvtiUjm5l40/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Eisners 2022!
Best short story in a comic book you will never hold in your hands your entire life, you will never see a copy on the shelf, we hid one copy somewhere in America, whoever finds it will be shot immediately in the back of the head if they try to pick it up, good luck Runners.
Best single issue must be able to stand alone.  When the rains fall, when the winds howl, the best single issue must be able to stand alone.  Just remember what the best single issue does when the earth quakes, and the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake-- it just looks that big old storm right square in the eye and says ‘Give me your best shot, pal, I can take it.’
Best Continuing Series:  a fantasy celebration of the 1920′s Harlem Renaissance, a period of African American excellence in “music, dance, art, fashion, literature, theater, politics and scholarship” which famously established in the arts such towering figures as Langston Hughes or Zora Neale Hurston.  That could win, or The Hulk.  Either one.
Best Limited Series.  I don’t think we’re supposed to use the word “limited” anymore.  I don’t think that word’s okay.  I mean, it’s okay for that community to say it.  But not for the rest of us-- not for the oppressor.
Best New Series, by men 34-51 years of age. The men may not be new to this Earth, and may be fast hurtling towards the grave, but they made some drawings on paper, and I guess those are new.  Mazel tov!
Best Publication for Early Readers:  Did you ever wonder how Brad Meltzer would follow-up his comics about superheroes raping each other?  He followed it up with telling small, defenseless children about Oprah.  Here’s a photo of the cover.
Best Publication for Kids:  Were you a kid, but not an early reader?  A dimwitted child who took longer than your peers to be able to even so much as comprehend a comic book...?  Well, here’s an award for what little you were able to read, Bluto, you dumbass.
Best Publication for Teens:  For the 27th consecutive year, the front-runner is “some porno they found in the woods.”
Best Humor Publication:  “The Scumbag, by Rick Remender and various.”  Wasn’t “Various” a big fan of Kyle Rittenhouse who murdered two people attending a civil rights protest?  Funny stuff.  Sounds hilarious.  I love to laugh.
Best Anthology: An exploration of China’s one-child policy and how it effected families for the “10 million couples who lost that only child”, illustrated by Chinese artists who have lived under the policy.  That or a Superman comic.  It’s neck and neck.
Best Reality-Based Work:  “The Strange Death of Alex Raymond, by Dave Sim and Carson Grubaugh.”  Yeah, when I think “Dave Sim”, the first words that go through my head are “Reality-Based.”  Giving an award to Dave Sim with the word “reality” in the title is kind of like ... another thing that’s ludicrously silly that someone who has the energy to think up a punchline to this sentence could think of.
Best Graphic Memoir:  Nate Powell is competing against Nate Powell. But strangely, this year’s “Special Achievement in Being Nate Powell” is going to Black Lightning creator Tony Isabella.  Make it make sense!  Either way, congratulations, Mr. Isabella.  Better luck next year, Nate Powell.
Best Graphic Album -- New, that is written by Ethan Hawke, who let’s face it, needs a win.
Best Graphic Album -- Reprint:  I’d make a joke that made something resembling coherent sense, but I’m afraid that’d violently offend fans happy about the nomination for “The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys: California Deluxe Edition, by Gerard Way, Shaun Simon, and Becky Cloonan.”
Best Adaptation from Another Medium:  All life on land adapted from the ocean, but the Eisners are too snobby to give that its due, I guess.  It’s the snobbery in comics that depresses me the most.
Best US Edition of International Material:  誰も気にしない?とにかく私たちは皆死ぬつもりです。
Best U.S. Edition of International Material—Asia:  The winner gets the same  Eisner glory as past Eisner winners like so-and-so and some-guy.  The loser will have to settle for being widely read by young people all over the world, and having their work adapted into multimedia spinoffs experienced by millions.  The stakes have never been higher.
Best Archival Collection / Project-- Strips (at least 20 years old) and Best Archival Collection / Project-- Comic Books (at least 20 years old) :  I guess fans of fancypants archival collections / projects don’t appreciate my interest in things being “barely legal” and think “I should be ashamed of myself.”  Well, we’ll see who’s laughing when I still seem tolerable thanks to rapidly declining standards in American masculinity!!!!
Best Writer, Best Writer/Artist, Best Penciller/Inker or Penciller/Inker Team, Best Painter/Multimedia Artist (interior art), Best Cover Artist, Best Coloring, and Best Lettering: Congratulations to everyone who cares who was nominated for these awards, and is excited about the nominations, which is to say, the parents of the people nominated.  Also, congratulations to the one person out there isn’t one of the parents of the people nominated, but cares about who was nominated anyways-- society may judge you, because of the weird phone messages you keep leaving on the answering machine of the local sorority house, no one can figure out what’s being said in those messages, they’re funny at first but then they just get increasingly off-putting especially as some of the girls at the sorority house seem to have gone missing, but still, a thrilling day for one and all.
Best Comics-Related Periodical/Journalism, Best Comics-Related Book, Best Academic/Scholarly Work, Best Publication Design, Best Webcomic, and Best Digital Comic:  Look, I know what you’re thinking-- “should this very prestigious tumblr blog have been nominated for each and every one of those awards?”  And I’ll be honest with you, the answer is Yes.  Even though it’s not technically a “book” or a “webcomic” or “enjoyable”?  Yes.  Even though a lonely man shouting impotently into the dark gets kind of depressing to think about if you contemplate it for too long?  Yes, yes, and yes.
But look, I know how the game is played.  It’s a lot of politics.  It’s a lot of whose ass was I willing to kiss.  It’s a lot of whose ass was I willing to do more than kiss.  It’s a lot of “please stop asking if we want our asses eaten if we nominate your stupid blog, your blog isn’t a digital comic, whatever that is, I don’t think anyone really knows, either way we’re trying to order bagels” getting yelled at me by Eisner judges.
But ultimately, it’s also a lot of me taking all of the credit if TCJ.com wins, even though I have not written for that site in several years, and people did NOT like it when I did, they were UNhappy, it went very badly.  But it’s also blaming other people if TCJ.com loses, and denying I ever heard of that site before. Either way, I live in a state of triumph!  So, in that respect, I have won something more valuable than an Eisner Award.  Which isn’t a hard thing to win.  I mean, you could do that at a carnival. But nevertheless-- congratulations to me!!!   And congratulations to you, for being in proximity to me!  We’re all going to get laid!
