RC, PLEASE share more BuckTommy headcanons with us, everything you’ve said about them so far has been glorious.

Headcanon 1:

After Buck calls Tommy about touring Harbor and they agree on a date and time, he starts researching. Every free second he has between calls is spent watching videos that walk through what all the switches and gauges on a helicopter control panel do. On his days off, he reads pages and pages of posts on r/flying. There are no less than eight biographies about pilots on his kitchen counter dressed in the colorful fringe of all his page markers at any given moment. He devours Chickenhawk in one evening, then falls down a Wikipedia rabbit hole that starts with the article on the Bell UH-1 Iroquois and spits him out when he finishes reading about a municipality in Baku, Azerbaijan called Bibiheybət just as the sun starts peeking through the windows.

The night before he's supposed to meet Tommy, he takes a practice PPL exam for shits and giggles. He doesn't pass, of course, but he scores better than he expected to, and he can't wait to tell Tommy. He can't wait to wow him with everything he's learned.

Of course, it's all for nothing, because Eddie swoops in and steals Tommy right out from under him before Buck can even ask Tommy about his thoughts on the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024.

Once they make their relationship official, Tommy does make good on his promise to take Buck up, and it's so fun to watch Tommy navigate the skies like the helicopter is an extension of his body, like he's barely wowed anymore by the fact he can fly, and he even lets Buck handle the cyclic for a couple of minutes.

They're hovering almost 6,000 feet above city limits, watching the sun set in a sweet comfortable silence, when Buck's almost had his fill of looking at the clean lines of Tommy's profile, he says, "Someday, when I get certified, I'm going to do a Screwdriver Down in a MD-500."

Once Tommy has wrestled the bird out of its sudden 400-foot free fall and back into an even hover, he grips the cyclic until his knuckles bleed white and says, teeth clenched, "Evan, unless you want tomorrow's top headline to be 'Two LAFD Firefighters Die In Massive West Hollywood Helicopter Crash,' I'm begging you to keep the dirty talk to yourself until we're back on the ground."

Headcanon 2:

Tommy has seen a UFO. He's actually seen, like, four. The third time, he'd been flying over the San Gabriel Mountains when something popped up on his radar out of literally nowhere and clipped his tail rotor, sending both him and the craft crashing into the woods. 

He doesn't remember anything that happened after that. He woke up in a windowless hospital room where someone in full military dress blues shook his hand and congratulated him on becoming the first ambassador to outer space. Then he made Tommy sign approximately eight million SF-312s and consent to be called upon "if the time should ever come." 

This is why he can't watch sci-fi movies with a straight face.

Headcanon 3:

Back in 1996, Tommy's buddies Jamal Kluger and Mitch Henney finally convinced him to go to one of the weekly school dances, mostly because Jamal was determined to slow dance with Amanda O'Shaughnessy and he needed moral support. Tommy didn't hate dances per se. Were there a hundred other things he'd rather be doing? Yes. He had a backlog of Car and Driver that really needed seeing to, but Jamal was practically his brother and Tommy would do a lot worse than dispassionately swaying with a few of his classmates to Mariah Carey in the name of best-friendship.

He'd been in the middle of trying to get Jamal's attention—not that he was ever going to notice, because he was finally dancing with Amanda and everyone else in the gym had probably ceased to exist—with his hands hovering a respectful quarter inch off Laura Lee Moore's hips, who said she'd specifically requested Dreaming of You, when the slow turning they'd been doing put him at the perfect vantage point to see Brett Bennett, pitcher for the East Woodbridge Falcons, dancing with Vanessa Wilson.

Brett was wearing a really nice button-up shirt and Tommy's gaze kept snagging on the way his arms filled out the sleeves, and he couldn't help but wonder if Vanessa could feel the calluses on Brett's hands through her miniskirt. They were probably rough and kept snagging the fabric. Vanessa could probably feel the pull of them, like velcro trying to pry apart. He watched Brett lean down to say something to her and couldn't help but think Brett wouldn't have to strain his neck so much to talk if he were dancing with Tommy. They were almost of a height; Tommy would barely have to tilt his head down. Selena crooned I just want to hold you close, but so far, all I have are dreams of you, and Tommy's heart pounded so loud he was almost certain Laura Lee could hear it over the music. When the song ended, he awkwardly backed away from her and thanked her for the dance, his gaze on Brett and Vanessa, who were still pressed close even though the Quad City DJs were enthusiastically telling people to ride a train. According to his cousin Denise, who was a grade below him and also in attendance that night, Laura Lee spent the rest of the night crying in the bathroom because Tommy couldn't take his eyes off Vanessa.

Almost thirty years later, he and Evan are hanging on the couch, half-watching an episode of Taskmaster and reminiscing about their first crushes—"Really, Evan, your teacher?"—and when Tommy tells him about wishing he'd danced to Dreaming of You with Brett Bennett, Buck presses a sweet kiss to Tommy's arm and says, "Stop making me want to time travel so I can fight an eleven-year old."

Tommy laughs and says, "It was more wanting to slow dance with a cute boy in front of everyone than Brett himself. You have nothing to be jealous about. When we were in the eighth grade, he crushed up a bunch of Altoids and snorted them through a hollowed-out pen during social studies. I've never heard anyone scream like that in my entire life. They had an ambulance come for him and he never came back to school after that."

"Sounds like a real winner," Evan teases, tongue between his teeth. "You really know how to pick 'em."

"Yeah, it's a gift," Tommy deadpans, and then wrestles Evan, who's cackling like a hyena, into the couch cushions. 

Months later, Howie and Maddie throw a big party—which Howie's been calling Reception Redux in the OG 118 group chat—in Tommy's backyard, and he's in the middle of an unspoken chicken wing eating contest with Eddie—who's winning, and Tommy has no idea how he's putting them away so fast—when the music changes from some pop song he doesn't know to a familiar tinkle of piano chords. Howie strong-arms the mic away from the DJ and announces with a big grin that the song was requested by someone who wanted to "quote-unquote: dance with a cute boy in front of everyone."

Tommy almost chokes on the wing in his mouth, and he barely wipes the barbeque sauce off his fingers in time before Evan comes over, takes his hand, and pulls him onto the little dance floor they'd put down that morning in the flattest part of the yard. 

His heart pounds as Evan drapes his arms over Tommy's shoulders like it's the easiest thing in the world, pressing close until it feels like their bodies are merging everywhere they touch, and then starts to sway. Tommy slowly lets his hands settle on Evan's hips, firm and sure. He doesn't even consider doing the hover thing. 

As Selena sings about wishing on stars, Tommy closes his eyes and tucks his temple against Evan's, and for a moment they're in the East Westbridge Junior High School gym, which smells like sweat and cherry Lip Smackers and body odor, and across the room Jamal and Mitch both give him an enthusiastic thumbs up—and Mitch then does something obscene with his hands that has Jamal smacking him upside the head—because Tommy's dancing with the boy of his dreams in front of everyone while his stack of Car and Driver magazines sit unread and curling from the humidity. 

"If Brett Whatshisname shows up, I won't be responsible for my actions," Evan says warmly, voice soft against the curve of his ear. "Literally. I already cleared it with Athena."

I'll be dreaming with you tonight endlessly, the song promises, and Tommy opens his eyes in the present. He takes a deep breath, borrows the energy of Selena's vow, and pulls back just far enough to whisper against the corner of Evan's mouth, "Marry me."

The broken case of Palladia definitely has an impact, but the Aquila's situation is more of a problem overall.

I have noticed a scar or burn skin tissues on main character's neck side area..? Is she designed that way or their is some back story for mc's scar near neck area??

There's a backstory, but like many cool scars, it's not anything earth-shattering.

Is Phoebe a love interest? I really liked what we saw of her so far so I am hoping she might be!

Yes, she is

What exactly happened in the world? I am not sure I understand what was the "disaster" that changed the planet.

This is a big, complicated thing. There wasn't any one thing, but it was a combination of war, disease, the effects of climate change, and the most unlikely one, the shifting of the earth's magnetic poles leading to more or less a collapse of satellite based technologies. For example, Alaska isn't a state anymore. Most of the global superpowers broke apart as everything deteriorated.

Will we be able to assemble crew in future or ask characters to join the boat crew?

I cannot answer this question right now.

will we see Krissa again, and will she have a role in the plot?

We may see Krissa again, but that depends on how long the story runs, and I know in my mind what role she would likely play. I don't think it's a huge one, but I do feel that every character plays some important role. (Even Ross 😅)

Chand, I love him as friend, so I was wondering: will we have the chance to pair him up with someone? My heart goes out for him and his endless quest in finding love! He deserves happiness too after all .

I have someone in mind as a potential matchmaking option for Chand. I don't know if it will actually play out at this time.

Apart from obvious “we and our progeny will all die if this issue will not be addressed soon” what was inspiration behind choosing climate change as a topic? Why post-apocalyptic setting?

There are a few reasons for this. I think that the way the world is changing is something that affects all of us, but a lot of us have a lifestyle that allows us to look away. It's a difficult topic and honestly, the research I did for this story has been heartbreaking at times. I think there's a tendency to look at these huge issues and feel that they're just too big to think about or not our problem. So, in one regard, I wanted to not just ignore the problem but also not be completely doom and gloom about it. I do think that no matter what happens, people will continue to find ways to adapt to and live on our planet. Nature and animals are also near and dear to my heart and a huge source of inspiration for me. The post-apocalyptic setting was also, in part, to make sailing relevant in a futuristic setting, and it kind of fit naturally with the collapse of infrastructure that supports most of our modern transportation and supply chains.

This book has an incredibly diverse cast of main and side characters.  Did you base any of them on people you know?

Not specifically.I certainly looked at people that often weren't represented in media and the stories and experiences they had, and took that into consideration when creating the cast. Of course, there are so many underrepresented people that I feel like I only put a drop in the ocean here.

Any chance Pramila is an LI? May be not a full branch? We're in love with her character design. 

She is not a romanceable character, unfortunately. I agree, the artists did a great job with her.

From which character chand ,sunny was inspired?

No characters in particular, actually. I started more with an idea of the role I wanted them to play in the story.

Will be able to adopt baby orca?

Sort of? As much as you can adopt a wild orca.

Will chand and pramila converse in Hindi?

Pramila is actually not Indian. Her parents named all their children after famous historical figures. She does know some hindi though.

Hey Hazel! I read your post with your thoughts on Sky asking George that question. It is interesting that you mention sky’s milk feature and the crotch cam. Because when I watched it and genuinely felt uncomfortable. Like it was a weird task to give them but the cameras on their laps was a bit invasive and left me feeling uncomfortable. Do drivers have a choice to reject doing PR like this?

Honestly that whole feature made me deeply uncomfortable. I showed it to the person I live with (well, my ex - lockdown has been interesting) and was like hey you know I’m a bit like “goddamn I love it when they soppily gaze at each other” so is it just me or is this like, not on.

And they were like “sure whatever” and then three questions in to the first segment were just like “errrrrr” - again, the excuse was they were fan-submitted but I find that kind of eyebrow-raising. 

The milk bit was just. Like. You can’t shove a camera in someone’s lap without it immediately going extremely Fake Taxi, even before you start slopping white stuff all over them. And Lando looked so miserable at the end - it’s cold in Barcelona in February, I wouldn’t want to get drenched in milk and I’ve got 30% more body fat than either of them. 

Anyway, that aside (I have been dying to be like ‘what the fuck’ about this for some time, sorry) I don’t know exactly how McLaren negotiate with Sky, obviously. But it will be something the Sky producers developed and then McLaren’s PR team will have agreed to - drivers do have some say in what they do but equally will have just turned up to a scheduled appearance and been told they’re driving and there’s a challenge, most likely. Stuff like the camera angles they’re being filmed from I would be very surprised if they knew about let alone had any say in. 

McL will have signed off the feature - and maybe the length of time it took to come out is a mark of how long that process took but it’s almost certainly more related to ekeing out content from testing for Sky. 

I obviously don’t know what anyone there’s take on it was. Or Sky. I’d be interested to find out but I don’t know when I’d next see someone to poke about that kind of conversation (I know the C4 lot but not really anyone in production at Sky)  

But yeah idk. I feel like every time Sky - whose content is so fuckin weird and boomerish it always like, baffles my fully internet-rotten mind completely whenever I tune in to ...idk, like. Why would you get all the F1 drivers, with your full and unrestricted paddock and filming access, to drive RC cars instead of talking to them about F1? Am I foolish here? Is F1 so uninteresting? We haven’t raced for eight weeks and I just had an hour-long in-depth with a driver about something that happened in Marrakech. 

Anyway. It baffles me that you’d get that kind of access and make this type of content - comparatively, FOM themselves have less access to drivers (because they’re strung up on their own broadcast rights) and then Sky seem to us “fan questions” as an excuse for some very questionable segments. 

I’d love to make a Smash Hits (err, showing my age here? Like a teen pop magazine) style F1 publication that asked them about their favourite biscuits and their dream dates and why they struggled more on the soft compound around Baku in 2016 but it provided an advantage in 2017 but that’d get frowned on, y’know, whereas Carry On Driving seems to be just accepted as something you unquestionably agree to.

I suspect eg: Mercedes wouldn’t but McL know they have a young, fun, media-friendly line-up at the minute and that’s a huge advantage to the team in terms of gaining air time, clicks, follows, youtube views etc for sponsorship - and PR activities are part of the drivers jobs, in making the team successful. So it makes sense from why they’d get them to do it, I’m just not sure why Sky would devise something that seemed so. Inappropriate.

Like, if someone edited that together on here everyone would be like wow OP calm down you can’t do that. F1 Twitter shat itself because someone matched George Russell’s outfits to Durex packaging. There’s a handwringing scandal about fanfiction twice a week. Everyone’s constantly chasing respectability over respect for the drivers or themselves or the sport and then Sky are just like ps subscribe to our OnlyFans!

I love being risqué. But there’s risqué and ...look, I just don’t think you should have crotch cams. I just. I just think that is really weird. Maybe I’m a prude or a hypocrite but like. I do.

(I’m not whaling on McLaren here - this is just how team PR works with production companies, to the best of my knowledge)

General update

I don’t think I’ll be around @esselley as much anymore. BUT I still feel like Twitter has not afforded me that same level of connection I loved having here. I have to post story snippets and previews on twit as crappy screenshots that nobody really wants to see, I can’t write spontaneous little things, etc (though I just got curious cat and may get TwitLonger). So it’s frustrating. I may still post links to fic updates and other projects (like zines) here for the time being but... I don’t really want to put my energy into such a dishonest site that is fast becoming proudly dominated by a*ntis and p*urity culture.

It’s crazy and sad to me to think of how excited I used to feel about sharing content here; teasing fics, posting updates, talking about my stories. I really lived for that. But this year has slowly killed that joy, from safe mode targeting general LGBT/fandom content, to “best stuff first”, and now finally, this mess. I just... feel disheartened posting here now. 

Anyways... bleh. What a shitty update :( I’m sorry everyone. I still have lots of stuff I’m working on and will keep posting wherever I can XD Chap2 of that kiri//baku will be up this Saturday, I’ve started... a new TDDK fic I’m super excited about, and I hope to do some holiday stuff as well for HQ/BNHA (hopefully with RC)! So, life goes on.

Nagorno-Karabakh: Azerbaijan discloses troop deaths despite ceasefire | DW | 13.12.2020

Armenia and Azerbaijan blamed each other on Sunday for breaking the terms of a ceasefire in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region. 

The Azeri government said four of its troops had been killed in Nagorno-Karabakh, after a group of Armenian fighters ambushed its forces on November 26.

The deaths are the first to be reported during the conflict’s ceasefire, which has lasted more than a month. 

For its part, Armenia said that six separatist fighters were injured in clashes with Azerbaijan’s troops after skirmishes broke out on Friday evening.

The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict erupted in September with clashes between Azerbaijan and separatists backed by Armenia over the mountainous region. 

Fighting supposedly ceased on November 10, thanks to a Russia-brokered peace deal that saw the Armenians cede parts of its territory. 

More than 5,000 people including civilians were killed during the fighting between the ex-Soviet rivals, who had previously gone to war in the 1990s over the mountainous region. 

Russia has deployed nearly 2,000 peacekeepers to the troubled region for at least five years, to monitor the peace deal and to facilitate the return of refugees. 

Moscow confirms ceasefire violation 

Responding to Armenian accusations, the Baku government said the clashes over the weekend had taken place in an area that fell under its control, while its forces carried out a military operation against enemy forces responsible for the deadly attacks on Azeri servicemen. 

But Armenia said its forces we simply repelling attempted intrusions by Azerbaijan’s forces into territories supposed to remain under the control of the rebel province’s government. 

The Armenian foreign ministry said Russian forces were not present in the area where the clashes broke out. 

Azerbaijan’s State Security Service shot back, saying “unfounded accusations against the Azeri side and the Russian peacekeepers by some Armenian leaders and media” were unacceptable. 

Russia’s defense ministry reported that the ceasefire had been violated for the first time, but it stayed silent on assigning blame. 

Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev warned that Armenia ”shouldn’t try to start it all over again.”  

”It must be very cautious and not plan any military action. This time, we will fully destroy them. It mustn’t be a secret to anyone,” Aliyev said.
