Remembering Jeremiah Green, Anita Pointer and John Osterlind / Rebecca Pratt
Well 2023 just began and news has come in that we actually lost two musicians and a radio personality at the very end of 2022. Here is my combined remembrance:
Remembering Jeremiah Green 1977-2022
Tumblr media
Green’s Party salutes drummer Jeremiah Green
Modest Mouse drummer and co-founder Jeremiah Green has died at 45. The WA indie-rockers had some cool tunes and albums. He was in the band from 1993 to 2022, but took a short break from 2003-04, which happened to be their breakthrough year with Good News for People Who Love Bad News (great title) and hits like “Float On”. They came up at around the time of indie rockers Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Death Cab for Cutie were breaking into the mainstream in the early-mid 00s, which was exciting to see.

Remembering Anita Pointer 1948-2022
Tumblr media
The Pointer Sisters’ Break Out album from 1983
Singer Anita Pointer of The Pointer Sisters, the vocal group she co-founded with her sisters, has died at 74. They were one of the great pop R&B vocal groups of the 70s and 80s. My earliest exposure to them was the “Pinball Number Count” on Sesame Street. Still a cool sing-along song. They, then, had a string of hits including “Fire” (a Bruce Springsteen cover), “He’s so Shy”, “I’m So Excited” (made legendary by the famous episode of Saved by the Bell where Jesse melts down singing it), “Automatic”, “Jump (for my Love)” (released the same year as Van Halen’s “Jump” but wildly different), “Neutron Dance” from Beverly Hills Cop, and “Dare Me”, many of these I was exposed to on MTV and V66 when I was learning about music at a young age. They also took part in USA for Africa’s “We are the World”. They also did a fun cover of “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” on A Very Special Christmas album.
On July 4, 1995, I went with a group of friends to the Boston Pops 4th of July at the Hatch Shell in Boston. There were too many people and we had to leave since there was nowhere to sit or stand, but off in the distance I was able to hear The Pointer Sisters performing a medley with the Pops.

Remembering John Osterlind / Rebecca Pratt 1967-2022
Tumblr media
Osterlind with WAAF in the mid 90s
[UPDATED 1/4/23] Radio personality formerly known as John Osterlind has died at 55. From 1992 to 2001 they were a DJ on WAAF-FM in Boston. In April 1995, I saw Slash’s Snakepit in concert at Axis in Boston and they hosted the show. I talked to them for a few minutes and was very cool. After 2001 they left WAAF and in 2003 left Boston for New Orleans.
Since my initial post, several obits have now brought to my attention that in the last few years, John transitioned to Rebecca Pratt. Story updated accordingly.

COLLIDER: The thing about being an actor is no matter who you are, you are just trying to get a break and you are trying to get noticed. You're trying to get better roles. Then there are people like you who have turned the corner and all of a sudden have landed really cool role roles at some point in their careers. When did you feel like you had turned the corner as an actor?
REBECCA FERGUSON: Mission [Impossible – Rogue Nation]. No discussions. Without a shadow of a doubt. I mean, also, it was such a corner. It wasn't even a corner, it was like jumping off a skyscraper. Doing a Mission: Impossible and being written such a huge role, like the lead with Tom Cruise, in a Mission: Impossible, how could that not just propel things forward? That is by far the turning point for me.
You have done a lot of cool roles. If someone has actually never seen anything you've done before, what is the first thing you'd like them to watch and why?
FERGUSON: That's so hard. I think it depends on the person, right? It depends on who they are, what area they're interested in, et cetera. For example, Mission for me, the first one showed a lot of fun, not an enormous range, but I think Silo for me is a lot of character choices that I've made that are very different to other things that I have done. Dune, Mission, and Silo.
I would recommend all three.
FERGUSON: Doctor Sleep was fun.
Especially the longer cut. Just throwing that out there for people that haven't seen it.
I gotta do one Dune question. Denis Villeneuve is a genius, and you knew the movie was gonna be good, but what has it been like reading reviews and feeling the reaction from fans? Because I genuinely think Dune 2 is a masterpiece and I think most people think the movie is spectacular. What has it been like for you with the movie doing so well and all the positive energy for the film?
FERGUSON: You know what? I think for me, because I had watched Dune and I was doing interviews — you and I did interviews — and I remember sitting there going, “I just want people to see it.” I heard myself say, “If you think Dune is good, wait until you see Dune 2,” and I remember thinking, “I really mean it.” I mean, the challenges, the angles, the storyline, the music, the scope, the Harkonnens, the graphics, it's all there. It's a masterpiece. And the fact that I know people have seen it and the response is what it is, it's a bit of me going, “Told ya.”
You kept saying it. I'm just overjoyed that Denis can make Dune Messiah when he wants to because the film has been so successful. As a fan, I want to see more, and I'm glad that he wants to do it.
FERGUSON: Me too. It's a universe. It's kind of what Star Wars was when it happened. I don't want to jinx it, but there's a lot that can be done here. This is a world. It's a sexy world, and it's dangerous, and it has different cultures and life and visions, and Patrice [Vermette], who is the designer, and the costumes. I mean, it's a spectacle in every aspect. It’s just phenomenal.
You know how much I love Silo. When did you realize that Silo might actually be something really special? Because you're never really sure until a certain point.
FERGUSON: I wasn't sure until reviews came out and numbers were going up. Literally. I needed the recognition of the people to understand, and maybe because I'm the lead and I'm carrying it, and it's hard to know in that sense, but I think I was very worried in many ways that it wouldn't deliver. I was questioning it, not in my heart because it's a love project and I love the people, as you know, but as a show. Would it hold? Would people watch it? When the digits came in and I got a phone call from Apple saying, “Well, this is looking good,” I went, “Oh, okay, good!”
I'm a huge fan of Apple TV. I think the sci-fi they make is easily the best of any streamers by a mile. I'm always looking at what's in the top 10, especially the top five because if it's something I love I want it to be there because I know they'll make more.
FERGUSON: That’s most of the things, not just the sci-fi. For me, like, The Morning Show, Season 1 of Ted Lasso, it's such a varied range. I loved Shrinking. I loved it. Apple is good at finding niches that stand out. It's great.
I’ve said this before, if I had to give up streaming channels I would not give up Apple TV.
FERGUSON: Apple right now listening in, they’re like, “Yeah!”
Here's the thing, you know this about me, I wouldn't say this if I didn't actually believe it. It's quality stuff.
I know that you're an executive producer on Silo, and I'm curious, what's an example of something that you did as a producer or something that you've learned in making the first season that you applied to the second season?
FERGUSON: I don't like analyzing myself in that sense. I have a very strong voice onset, as in I'm very much a part of the process. To understand, people turn to me for questions, as well, which is a nice feeling of giving people security of angles and ideas. When people have ideas, even people who are not part of the DP, acting or directing but they might have an idea, they come to me. I feel a part of the entire spectrum of the show and I take the place as well, but I don't see myself as a producer, which is maybe weird. I see myself as very much a part of driving the show forward, and I love everyone so much and I care for every single human being. I know them, I know their family, I know the kids, I know their situation. It's pure, utter love. So, I don't know where the producer steps in or where the actor steps in. I don't know. I just have a very strong voice and a position that is anchored.
Being a producer and obviously the lead in everything on the show, how much do you like looking at early cuts?
FERGUSON: I get access to them. Right now, I'm watching the cuts. I'm watching the studio cuts, which mean visual effects, sound, nothing is done, and I find it daunting. I find myself calling the supervisor who's doing it sometimes, and I'm like, “Oh, the glory around my head, it looks…” And he’s like, “Yeah, but we haven't graded it yet.” I’m like, “Okay!” But when you asked about the producing lot, I watch Graham, and I watch Joanna Thapa and Nina [Jack], who are the producers on set who are phenomenal, and the directors. I really study people. I look at them, I ask them questions, I’m curious. But it trickles from Graham and all of it. The whole process.
The only reason this show works is because of Graham's leadership and his brilliant writing. I love the whole arc of the first season and how it ties together. Can you give an example of Graham on set problem-solving and why he is such a special showrunner?
FERGUSON: Do you know what? It's not a problem-solving. I think when Graham comes, there's a buzz. There’s a buzz from everyone because we know that the creator– It's like daddy walked on set to help us again. Usually when he comes, he's there, and I grab him, and I ask him to pitch the next season for me. So I basically don't give him two seconds to respond to other people's issues because I ask him for all the attention myself. We've become a little group gathered around the chairs, and he pitches us new ideas. It's a community. What he shows, his enormous leadership is that he backs away and he doesn't step in and take over. He is very much the man who just leans back. He lets people solve it. He comes up with a joke or a reassuring thing or does little tweaks, but you don't know he does it. He lets the people who is given the job do that job.
In an ideal world, how many seasons would you like for the show?
FERGUSON: I believe the show has an ending, and I know when that is. So, that's the answer. You'll find out when the show's done. Actually, to be honest, I don't think it's a secret. I mean, the books are the books, and the three books are divided into four seasons. So I believe — unless any Apple person is gonna jump on — I think we're absolutely fine to say Season 1 we've done, Season 2 is shot and coming out, and we're now looking at green-lighting Seasons 3 and 4. I think we would film them maybe together, and that will be the end.
That's what I wanted to ask you about. They did that with See. They filmed Seasons 2 and 3 together. The biggest problem for me, and I think for a lot of fans, is streaming shows often take long breaks between seasons because it takes a long time to film. Because this show's ending is in sight, I wanted to ask you if Seasons 3 and 4 could film together, which seems like you guys might.
FERGUSON: I think that is the plan, and I believe that because the request of it is so demanding, which is amazing. The point would be to give the people what they want to get so we don't have too much of a gap. But everything changes. It's about timing, it's about what works, what else is coming out. It's a mathematical equation of how things are being dropped and when it's being dropped.
The other thing is, obviously it's very daunting to write 20 episodes of a show, but if you were filming Seasons 3 and 4 at the same time, you could block shoot and maybe save a lot of time by doing everything on that one set and then that's it.
FERGUSON: Exactly. You've got it, Steven. But what we also have to understand is you then have 20 episodes and you might have five different directors. As actors, we're jumping, nothing is consecutive, so it's very strenuous for us, it's very strenuous for the directors. But that's how we did Season 2, as well. One day I would film with three different directors, three different episodes. So, I have color-coordinated and directorially coordinated my scripts. I only have my stuff, no one else’s, and I have it in sequence, in order so I know, when I look at the day color-wise, who I'm working with, when I'm working, where I am. It's very unsexy — I find it very sexy. I love everything that has to do with highlighters. I’m a bit OCD.
How did the underwater stuff in Season 2 compare to your work on Rogue Nation?
FERGUSON: The same people that I worked with, the water people who I love at Pinewood, the best people — Joe, Pete, “Perfect Pete” — I love them. All of them. I'm very comfortable in water. I'm a diver. I love water. I love challenging myself. With Rogue Nation, there was a specific scene that wasn't that crazy — we were underwater, I’m saving him, and get out. In this, we have excessive, extravagant moments that I'm very excited for you to see.
Do you think there's a chance for Season 2 to be out this year, or do you think it's more realistic early next year?
FERGUSON: This year.
Have they told you?
FERGUSON: No, that's what I think.
I really hope that's true. The thing I'm thinking about is you guys just wrapped in March, and I know how long post-production takes and VFX so that's why I was like, “Can they make November? Is it possible?”
FERGUSON: We don't have a release date. We have something we're working towards. I have all 10 episodes of studio cuts, but then it's grading VFX, and there's so much that needs to be done. I think we're hoping for a date, and I think we're pushing for it. I think Apple is incredible at their response to needed editorial changes. I think the collaboration is so good between the directors in the studio that I don't see why it wouldn't work. But that is out of my hands.
What can you tease about Juliette’s journey in Season 2 without spoilers?
FERGUSON: If I could tell you. I shouldn't say this, but it gets wet. I don't even know if I should say that, but I just did. It's so intense. It is so intense. It's a multitude of things that happen, and it's like Season 1 was the introduction to the chaos that is gonna happen.
I know that you are gonna be filming Mercy with Chris Pratt, and I know it films in LA. I’m super excited. What about this project versus the other scripts you probably were reading said, “This is the one I wanna make?”
FERGUSON: It was eight days of shooting, so it gave me time off. The character was intriguing, but the director and the producer, so Timur [Bekmambetov] and the producer, Chuck Rovan, who did Oppenheimer, it was the conversations with them about where they wanted to take the character of Maddox, the AI judge that I’m playing. I was intrigued with what I could do with the eight days of this character, and it's not asking for a lot when it comes to change. I have basically one look and so many small details in the acting. I know it's AI and it sort of, once again, puts me in sort of a futuristic box. For me, I pick the roles due to the character and what I haven’t done before. And by the way, Chris Pratt is the loveliest, kindest, and very smart human being.
Yeah, he's very nice.
FERGUSON: I'm not saying that I'm shocked. It's just, like, I'm so happy to be working with such lovely people. I feel very lucky.
Yeah, I just spoke to him for Garfield and had him talk about it.
FERGUSON: He's such a goofball with a very high intelligence.
Yeah, also, he is very popular with the shows he does and the movies he makes. People really like watching them.
FERGUSON: He's likable and he's fun. He has the quality, the Sam Rockwell quality. It's goofy, it's quick, it's fast. He responds very wittily, even off camera. We haven't started filming, but when we were rehearsing, he left the room, and I threw him a one-liner and he just threw one back within a second, and I thought, “His mind is very active.”

I'm rewatching some So Weird in case it gets taken off Disney+, and I have so many questions, since you are one of the few blogs I know that has seen the show. Like, do you think the lesbian subtext between Molly and Rebecca was intentional? Because even if it wasn't, they had to have noticed it. And the episode Lost has a happy ending, but I feel like it ends abruptly, and that girl is going to have a lot of challenges after being in a coma for 14 years.
In the Cooksey interview all he said was Disney exec Lee Gaither suggested they make Rebecca a friend of Molly’s.
Tumblr media
It’s not officially canon, but I think most of us have accepted it that way. (Now is the perfect time to wish to the universe for Mackenzie to finally accept one of TSWP’s invites to be interviewed. 🙏 I’d love to hear her thoughts on reading the script with grown-up eyes compared to most of the children in the cast.)
Lost does end abruptly! I suppose Dionne and company... just accept that Fiona’s plan worked? I'd love to know if they became believers of the supernatural or simply called it a miracle.
Tumblr media
I wrote about this before with an Anon ask, but I think it’s possible Kamilah suffered a fall related to ballet. The actress who plays older Kamilah doesn't have any lines to be credited (😢), so we can't reach out to her and ask for details. And Kyla Pratt seems to have filmed all her scenes alone - a rare instance when the guest didn't interact with any cast member.
Between Kamilah's comatose beginning in the 1980s, potential brain damage, the upcoming turn of the millennium, and decades of education she didn't get, it was probably for the viewer's sake they didn't expand on Kamilah's story and ended her episode with no dialogue.

How To Get Away With Murder, Chapter 11
Word Count: 1.4k
Warnings:  murder of a minor character, planned murder, conspiracy, secret pregnancy
Tumblr media
"They are freaking out, mom," I whispered to her. "We need to do something. The kids are cracking."
"They were smart," she said in a hushed tone from her office, "They called me and brought her here. When Asher almost ruined it, they brought her to the basement.  They’re not cracking, Cheyanne.  They’re keeping it together."
"She needs to go away. Let Frank take care of her," I offered, "He ow-"
"No."
"Mom!"
"I SAID NO!" By this time the four kids who'd kidnapped Rebecca walked into the office.
"Is everything alright?" Wes asked, brow cocked at the tense air that surrounded me and mom.
"Everything is fine," she said in a loving tone, "We need to figure out what to do about Rebecca. Ideas, anyone?"
"I'm getting coffee," I angrily declared, “call me when you’ve figured it out!”
"Me too," Bonnie said, walking along with me.  We went to the kitchen and she nudged me when I started brewing a pot of coffee, "It has to be done.  She has to go."
"I know," I agreed. We went down the stairs, making sure not to cause any extra noise. When Rebecca saw us, she looked at us scared.  But Bonnie had a cup of coffee in her hands, as though she was there to help, “Rebecca…”
"Please," she cried, "You have to help me. They are going to kill me. I know you two are good people. You won't let them do that."
"We won't let them kill you," Bonnie said from in front of her. I went behind her and quietly cut a piece of duct tape. Before she knew what was happening I placed it over her mouth, “don’t worry about them, Rebecca.”
"They won't kill you," I sighed, pushing some hair from her face, "But we will. I'm sorry Rebecca. But you are going to make a mess of things if we don't take care of you, and quite frankly, I can’t let that happen.  Neither of us can."
Through teary eyes she watched us put the plastic bag over her head. Bonnie held it there and I watched to make sure she stopped breathing. After I saw the light go from her eyes, I let Bonnie know. She removed the bag and threw it in the pile of trash by my father's workbench.
"Go upstairs. I'll take the body beneath the stairs, and make it look like she escaped," I offered, "I'll be up in two minutes. Have a cup of coffee ready for me?"
"You got it," she said. I could see the sadness in her eyes as she took one last look at Rebecca. I quickly got to work and ripped the tape from her arms and legs, making it look like she had managed to get out. Then I dragged her over to the stairwell and pushed some of the old holiday totes and luggage in front of her. Finally, I went over to the door, and opened it, making it look as though she'd run through the door, headed for freedom.
After a quick once over I decided it looked right and went up the stairs. Bonnie was just finishing pouring my cup of coffee, "You good?"
"Yeah," I nodded. I walked out to the living room. The doors that normally separated the office from the living room were open and everyone was still debating on what to do, "The coffee is done. Anyone want some?"
Annalise and Laurel raised their hands and nodded. Bonnie passed me and sat down in the living room while Frank followed me back to the kitchen. I grabbed three coffee cups from the cupboard.
"Are we going to talk about what happened last month?"
"It depends.  Are you going to tell me you aren't fucking Laurel anymore?" I asked in a hushed tone.
"I'm not fucking Laurel," he hissed, pouring himself a cup of coffee. He filled the other two cups and I started to pour sugar and creamer in both, “Chey…I’m not lying to you.  We aren’t having sex with each other.”
"Is that her choice, or yours?"
"It's mine," he growled, "If you must know. Now will you talk to me?"
"No time, my other mom is on the way. She called me and told me she has a flight tomorrow."
"Eve is coming out?" I nodded, "Is she bringing Julie?"
"Yeah," I said quickly, "And she knows something else that you don't."
"And what's that?" he asked.
I picked up a coffee cup for my mother and Laurel and started past him. He blocked me so I put the cups down on the other side of him and pressed our lips together. He hungrily accepted my kiss and pulled my body to his own. That's when I pulled away and grabbed the two cups, only to turn back to him, "Last month at the courthouse. You weren't wearing a condom."
"Yeah, so?"
"Frank, I haven't been on the pill since I dumped you in October." I hissed. I saw his eyes widen and his jaw drop. I turned around and headed out to the living room. Laurel took her coffee first, and then my mother. Frank made his way into the living room looking dazed, "Hey mom? Can we break off for dinner, then come back later? I haven't eaten all day."
"Yeah," she whispered more to herself. Then she turned to everyone, "Cheyanne is right. Everyone go get dinner. Come back at eight o clock."
Bonnie began to call up Asher but to no avail, and I tapped her on the shoulder, "dinner buddies?"
She smiled and nodded, "Yes. I've really been craving that Indian place downtown."
"I've been craving Indian food all week," I smiled. Out of my peripherals I saw Frank's eyes snap up to meet my gaze, “we good to go now before the rush hits?”
"Hey I hav-" he began but I cut him off.
"Anyone want to come with us?"
Frank took a step back and my mother headed off into the kitchen. Bonnie and I started off to her car.
"Did you tell him?" she asked as she started her car up. I nodded.
"What did he say?"
I bit my lip, "I don't know. I walked out of the kitchen when I told him."
"CHEYANNE?" She all but yelled, "This is going to be hell tomorrow. You told Eve, and you know the first thing she is going to do is go after him.  Especially since she’s bringing your daughter to town too!"
"No," I said correcting her, "I made Eve promise me that she wouldn't talk about it. I haven't even told mom.  And anyways, Annalise will be side tracked.  I told her to bring out Julie for that exact reason.  She hasn’t seen her since before she started kindergarten…back when Frank and I were engaged still."
She started laughing, and so did I.
"You know," I laughed, "I never thought of this before, but it is so weird thinking about calling one of my moms by their names.”
"Yeah, I can't even begin to understand how weird that is," Bonnie laughed, “if I would have called my parents by their first names they would have killed me…”
“Thankfully, my parents are different…”
“yeah,” she agreed softly.  A swift silence took over us as we drove to the restaurant, “you know…you don’t have to keep it…he and Laurel are over.”
"I'm keeping the baby Bonnie," I sighed, "I don't want to get an abortion."
"Did you do it on purpose?" she asked, "To somehow beat Laurel at this game of Frank you have going on."
"Honestly," I began, "No. My plan that day was to drag him into that bathroom, kiss him once, and then sucker punch him. Then tell him he could finally go to hell, and that I was done with him. But before I knew it, we kept kissing, and removing clothing...Everything felt so right, Bonnie."
"We don't need to talk about it if you don't want to," she said, trying to steer away from the conversation.
"Shit, Bonnie, I'm sorry."
Then both of our cell phones buzzed. It was from Frank.
'Everyone back to the office now.'
"I wonder what it could be?" Bonnie asked.
"You think they found her?"
"Or her body?" she asked.
When we had arrived back to Annalise's house we saw Michaela and Conner heading to the basement door. Frank and Laurel were already there, with my mom.
"Who did it? Who let her go dammit?"
No one responded. Then she pulled all of us inside the basement, where Wes stood right in front of the chair.
"WHO LET HER ESCAPE?" Annalise boomed.

Good for Jeff!
Details as to his role are under wraps. But Pierre joins an ensemble led by Chris Pratt, which also includes Rebecca Ferguson, Kali Reis, Annabelle Wallis, Chris Sullivan, Kenneth Choi, Kylie Rogers and Rafi Gavron.
Set in the near future when capital crime has increased, Mercy follows a detective (Pratt) who is accused of a violent crime and forced to prove his innocence. The film written by Marco van Belle (Arthur & Merlin) is currently in production for release in theaters worldwide on August 15, 2025. Charles Roven is producing alongside Atlas Entertainment executive Robert Amidon, as well as Bekmambetov and his production banner BEL’s producer Majd Nassif.
Currently a series regular on The CW’s Walker, Pierre is frequently recognized for his multi-season recurring role on Shameless. Previously a series regular on Freeform’s Beyond, he’s also recurred on ABC’s The Rookie and Once Upon a Time, and been seen in War Dogs with Jonah Hill and Miles Teller. The actor is represented by Buchwald, Main Title Entertainment, and Meyer & Downs.
That's awesome! Congratulations, Jeff!!! Sounds like he has his hiatus plans set.

Tumblr media

When Xaden heads off to see Violet at Basgiath since their dragons are mated, Garrick finds himself alone in this unfamiliar area trying to get his name established navigating fights and ambushes. He owed his life to the man.

Author Note: As I'm writing this (February 2024), Garrick's signet is not revealed in Iron Flame. For this story, I followed my theory about Garrick's signet which is Near Sight (opposite of Liam's Far Sight). Near sight can easily recognize emotion changes, whatever emotion someone displays Garrick will pick up. This also relates to his dragon (Chradh) who is able to locate certain objects and is sensitive to runes. Garrick uses this to quickly learn who is trustworthy and gain information about people's true intentions making him a strong asset and an exceptional fighter.
Chapter 2: The Feelings
< Garrick Tavis >
The sun from the morning was nowhere to be found and the clouds were looking seriously ominous today. Temperamental like this guy, I glanced over at Xaden and his expressionless face from the hard floor of the outdoor sparring field. Something was definitely on his mind. My first guess would be Violet related.
I welcomed the breeze against my shirtless, overheating body as my mind wandered off to what Lei was up to. Her smile from the morning flashed across my mind and I exhaled. Maybe it was her hair? I knew that most female riders kept their hair short, braided, or tied up to keep it from getting caught, but Lei’s ponytail was long enough and always swaying from side to side, like it was tempting me to grab. Oh gods, I shouldn’t have thought that.
From the side, Xaden threw a clean towel that landed directly on my face, dragging me out of my thoughts. Right, this was supposed to be a quick break before another set. “Thanks,” I muttered as I grabbed it and wiped the dripping sweat across my face.
“Riorson!” A familiar voice called out, full of disgust with each syllable. Tightening my core, I peeled my upper body off the mat and saw that bitch from last night. Fuck, what was his name again?
Lei’s sharp, venomous tone saying his name last night replayed in my mind. “Move along, Pratt.”
Oh yeah, Pratt.
I looked up to see Xaden turned towards him with a blank face across the field. He didn’t answer, he just stared. Then a second later, Xaden looked over at me and was that worry that just flashed across his face? Pressing his lips together, he looked towards Pratt’s direction again.
Did Xaden know Pratt? Maybe he was an old friend? I could see the gears turning in his head staring at the blonde boy.
“Where the fuck were you last night?” Pratt shouted.
I scoffed and shouted back at him. He didn’t even have the courage to walk closer to us. “Damn, Pratt. I don’t think you wanted an audience to witness your ass getting whooped.”
“I would keep your thoughts to yourself if I were you,” Pratt said my name in the same disgust he did with Xaden’s. “Your days at Samara are getting shorter with each word.” What the fuck was his deal?
Before I could quip back, Pratt looked directly at me. “Oh and leave Lei alone. She isn’t into dirty traitors like you two.” Pratt walked off with his “friends” trailing behind him. Two of the guys behind him moved with uncomfort and I could immediately identify they were the same boys from last night.
“Watch your back, Garrick. He plays dirty.” Xaden replied. From the tone of his voice I knew that it wasn’t a guess, it was a statement.
“Good, I like it dirty anyways.” I muttered back, my body making a dense thud against the hard floor surface as I dropped in exhaustion.
✦ ✦ ✦
Xaden and I managed to keep the score even until the very end. Maybe it was the years of training we did together and how we knew each other better than we knew ourselves? Every move I threw at the guy, he managed to block. Thanks to my signet I was able to see the way his eyes moved before a punch or a jab and countered each step. But, he was still able to get a good punch on my jaw right when my mind was starting to wander off.
Chradh loved reminding me how I should be paying attention whenever Xaden broke through my concentration like that.
“Lei! Can you help?” A voice called out on our way to the showers and my head immediately turned. I scanned the fields until I saw Lei running over to another rider with short blonde hair reaching down to pick up buckets off the floor. I made eye contact with the blonde rider’s green eyes. Her eyes widened and immediately tilted her head up at Lei, her eyes moving in my direction. She clearly knew me, but I didn’t know her. Shortly after Lei turned in my direction.
Her shiny, dark as night ponytail tossed above her shoulders. The shorter strands of hair fell into place, framing around her round rosy cheeks. I couldn’t turn my eyes away from her as I stood there watching. The short haired rider said something to Lei and after a quick nod, Lei jogged over.
“Hey! Do you have an outpost shift tonight?” She asked when she reached me. Her scent filled the space between us. I held my breath knowing that I could just drink her up.
I nodded. “It’s mine this time around.”
“Great,” she gave me a gentle smile. She opened her mouth to say something, but glanced behind her looking back at the green eyed rider who was struggling to carry two buckets in each hand. “Oh gosh, Iris! Wait!” Lei turned to me. “I’ll catch you later, okay?”
Before I could reply, she turned and jogged back. I felt a hand hit my bare back.
“Do me a favor and remember to breathe,” Xaden sighed, walking ahead of me.
✦ ✦ ✦
Fuck, this outpost was so small. The moment I showed up for the shift, Lei was already in here marinating every corner of this space with her delicious scent. Thank gods there was a breeze blowing tonight circulating the air around us. Her warm vanilla scent stirred around me. I’ll need to ask Xaden about an olfactory dampening rune next week.
That’s going to be a fun conversation. Chradh said amusingly.
The conversation started with us catching up on what we did during the day. I learned that Iris, the short haired blonde who I briefly saw earlier today, was her closest friend here. I told her about Xaden and the bond we shared for many years. You would have to be blind to not see our rebellion relics. So I told her what I could without bringing up Aretia or the impeding doom Xaden carried on his shoulders. Lei carefully watched my expressions, smiling and encouraging when appropriate, She always made she didn’t step outside her boundaries.
I asked about her signet and she told me that it was a form of distance wielding. She wasn’t sure if she could do long distance wielding because her power burns out when channeled for a long time. It surged quickly in powerful consecutive bursts. When mentors said she drew the short end of the stick, she learned to hone the power to her advantage. She could shorten distances so fast that it gives off the illusion that she was teleporting in short distance increments. They must have had their head stuck up in their ass not to see how lethal she could be.
For the most part, it sounded like she trained on her own. Last year was when she learned that she could travel more than just her surrounding areas only if she could paint in her mind where exactly she needed to go. I made a mental note to ask her if she wants to join us on a sparring session one day. She had so much potential in that small body of hers and I wanted to see more.
Near the end of our shift, I built up courage to ask her. “Um,” I started. “Can I ask you a personal question?”
“What’s on your mind, Garrick?” She smiled, tilting her head to the side.
“How does someone like you end up knowing a guy like Pratt anyways?” I asked cautiously. I watched her gentle smile drain from her face, like a sad memory was dragging her back down. Her blue irises trembled with hesitation as she held my gaze.
“We were engaged,” she started, looking ahead at the mountains. “We met as a part of a political alliance. I don’t come from wealth or power, Garrick. I come from a small, insignificant island in the Emerald Sea.” She lowered her head.
Like Xaden and Cat. Power was never something I craved. Sure, I saw the allure of it. But when you watched public executions of hundreds, including your family, for challenging power, you learn survival is more important. You do everything you can do to survive. You survive to remember each name, each story, and each face as a big fuck you. Maybe I was like Lei, I just didn’t like bullies.
One of the many reasons I chose you, Big One. Chradh echoed with pride in my mind.
Lei let out a soft exhale. “When I was 10, my father realized that the island resources were finite and started inviting aristocrats from the Continent to create trade routes. Pratt’s family was the first to visit. Within days of them leaving, his family made us an offer for an arranged betrothal under the condition that I survive the Threshing when I turned 20.”
“Threshing?” My voice rose in anger and my hands curled into fists. “Lei, you could have died! Did your family know how dangerous that was?! Pratt gave you a fucking death sentence!” I broke my composure. Why was I so angry?
She laughed a short, gentle laughter turning back to me. “Honestly, no. No one knew about the Threshing where I was from. Riders and dragons were stories that I only heard from elders in the island when I was growing up. Myths and legends with heroes, not a girl from an island somewhere.” She paused, muscles around her eyes tenses and her eyes were focused like she was calling for Cosheirm in her mind.
I watched as she found her peace again. Cosherirm, the word for harmony. Lei found her harmony through Cosheirm. Her pale skin against the stark contrast of her dark as night hair. She was beautiful.
“But Garrick, if I was given the decision again knowing what I know, I will always take the path to Cosheirm. Even if I wasn’t guaranteed that Cosheirm would choose me again.” Her determination was so strong that I could see an aura of confidence cloaked her body like a glowing shield. She was glowing.
“Lei,” I started and she got up from her wooden seat.
There were sounds of footsteps coming from the outside. “It looks like the next patrols will be coming soon. Come on, I’ll walk you back.”
✦ ✦ ✦
"You have to admit. If this walking to my bedroom becomes a regular occurrence, people are going to start talking." I said as we headed toward my barrack for a second night in a row.
"You need to check that masculinity, Garrick. I can help if you need more practice getting down on your knees again," she shrugged.
Oh, we were on a joking basis now.
"Hey, I'm not complaining. I've done it plenty of times, the whole escorting and getting on the knee thing... for other reasons," I glanced down to be greeted by her rosy cheeks. "I was just saying that I could get used to this."
It was Lei's looked flustered as she cleared her throat. "Anyone who sees us is going to think you're taking me to your room. We can stick to that story if you're worried about what people say. Deal?"
"Oh, I give zero shits about what anyone thinks about me, Lei. I just didn't know that was what you wanted others to think about us," I teased.
An audible groan came from Lei. "Garrick, you're impossible."

✦ ✦ ✦
Wake, Big One.
I rolled over in my bed, my eyes still closed. What’s wrong, Chradh?
I sense something unfamiliar in the south clearing of outside of Samara. In the pit of stomach, I felt it too. I’ve felt this before.
Before Chradh could finish, my body was already up. I quickly got dressed and strapped on my rider leather. I walked over to the doorway and grabbed the two swords propped against my desk. In the same motion I’ve been doing for years, I crossed them on my back.
Wyverns. And I sense a venin, Big One.

How To Get Away With Murder, Chapter 5

"Cheyanne," my mom asked, from the office on the main floor, "Have you seen Frank yet?"
I shook my head, "No mom, I haven't seen him in a few days now. Sasha called me the other day asking if I wanted to grab lunch so she’s back in town.  He's probably stuck with her."
"That would explain why Lauren is down." Annalise said with a shrug. Just on the other side of the closed doors the Keating 5 had just finished up on another case and were waiting to hear what was next on the docket.
"Laurel!"
"What?" Annalise asked, cocking her head to the side.
"Her name is Laurel, not Lauren, mom," I laughed, "I know you don't like the girl but give her a shot. She is really smart."
"Smart can only take you so far, Cheyanne," she sighed, "She's only cutthroat when it comes to talking to you.  The girl would slit your throat if it could get her further.  Hell I’m sure she’d slit your throat just for fun at this point."
I took a second to think it over. The only times that Laurel had been argumentative was when I was around with Frank.  She would get really aggressive.
"Can I come in," Wes asked, knocking on the door, “I don’t mean to interrupt.”
I walked over to the door and opened it, letting him in, "What do you want?"
"Asher never showed up. Laurel left ten minutes ago, and we were wondering if we could head home early. The bonfire is tonight and some of us wanted to go."
"Why did Laurel leave?"
"I don't know her phone started to go off, and she just left."
"Go home. I need to talk with my daughter.  Thank you for asking me, Wes."
Wes nodded, and I closed the door to the office. On the other side of the door, we could hear Michaela telling them to meet at Asher's place.
"Honey, I need to talk to you about your father," she sighed, "Sit down."
"Does it have anything to do with the Lila Stangard case?"
Annalise nodded, "I've got a call with the D.A later and I want you to know before anyone else does."
"It's why Bonnie isn't here..."
"You know?"
I nodded, "We've got to talk about some things too mom. Tell dad about the DNA testing and then come to my house. I need to show you something."
"Cheyanne?"
I looked at her one last time before I stood up and headed towards the double doors, "I love you mom, but I only did it to protect you. You'll see."
“Okay…”
I walked out of my parent's house and started to my own, only to be stopped by Sam, "Honey, what are you doing here?"
"You and mom need to talk."
"She already thinks she knows everything," he said in an angered tone, "Let's go in and talk about this, Cheyanne…with your mother."
"No, dad," I sighed, trying to weasel my way out of having to be in the room with the two of them when they had their discussion, "She fired Bonnie today and she found out about the baby. Right now, she is on the phone with the D.A. And she's going to request a DNA test."
"Cheyanne, you don't know what you are talking about!" he said nervously, eyeing up the house before turning back to me, “come on, honey.  Come inside with me.  Let’s talk to your mother together!”
"Dad I'm done covering for you. I know everything," I yelled. A few concerned students stopped walking, before their friends pulled them along.  I sighed and bit my lip but pulled my father close to myself in a hug as to not attract any further attention, "I love you dad...but I know who you are. I know what you are. You use people. You manipulate them. You manipulated me. You manipulated mom, Bonnie, Frank. All of us. Whatever mom does, I hope it ends you."
With a final sigh, I kissed him on the cheek and got into my car without a second thought, heading to my house. I knew that the conversation was going to be a long one between mom and dad.  I could see the tiredness in her eyes and knew that she was going to say she wanted a divorce.  I also knew that I was going to be prepared for when she came over with a bottle of wine, a warm bedroom that she could use as her own while they went through the legalities, and a shoulder to cry on.
Tumblr media
After the fight had taken place, and Michaela had made it over to the Keating mansion, Rebecca snuck through the front door. This was her chance to prove Mr. Darcy killed her friend, not her.
She just needed to get her hands on the proof.  And she had been waiting for Annalise to leave.  But she was shocked when she heard two voices talking in the dark.  She had tried desperately to sneak up the stairs, but was caught at the foot of them when someone called her name.
“Rebecca?”
She turned, seeing Michaela.  Sam was glaring at her, a dangerous look in his eyes.
"Call Wes." she pleaded, making a bee-line for the Keating's master bedroom. She heard the lock click right as Sam Keating beat on the door telling her to let him in. Michaela, unsure of what is going on, called Wes. It was right then and there, at the foot of the stairs she found out just the extent this whole mess had gone on.
She had managed to stumble into not just an intense fight, but something that she knew would end in a gruesome way if she didn’t intervene.
She grabbed at her neck in disbelief. Sam broke down the bedroom door, forcing Rebecca into the bathroom. Within moments, the rest of the Keating 5 was in the master bedroom trying to diffuse the situation.  They were all talking a mile a minute, and it only led to more confusion. It wasn't working. Tension hung in the air like a knife. As Rebecca and Wes passed Sam he tackled them.
His career may have been in tatters if the evidence got out there, but it wasn't going to be ruined because Annalise's little lap dogs caught him.  He wasn’t going to just roll over from five law students and his wife. He saw the flash drive and made a grab for it. Wes, Rebecca, and himself all were involved in the struggle. Conner tried to jump in, but Sam easily struck him away. Next, Laurel fought her way in, grabbing it and making her way towards the stairs. Sam overpowered the young adults and chased after her.
As he grabbed for Laurel, Michaela pushed him over the edge of the railing. And that's when the house got silent.  It seemed like everything went in slow motion as Sam went over the rail and tumbled to the floor below.  When everyone rushed to the stairs their hearts caught in their throats.
Sam was still.   They all had made the assumption that Sam had died from the fall.  It wasn't until they began arguing that they noticed Sam get up and make a move for Rebecca. In one swift motion he was on top of her trying to strangle the life out of her. The screaming continued, and Wes grabbed the trophy, swinging it at the back of Sam's head. This time, he was dead.
They were sure of it.
The Keating 5, minus Asher, took to cleaning up their crime, meanwhile across town Annalise debated turning in her husband for the murder of Lila Stangard.
At her home, Cheyanne began to worry about her mother. Why hadn't se arrived? She called the one person she knew she could always rely on.
Tumblr media
"Hey, are you with Laurel?" he pled.  My heart dropped to the pit of my stomach as the worry was all for her, “Chey?”
"Why would I be with Laurel?"
"I don't know maybe Annalise called you guys with a new case,” he said nervously, “your mom is bat shit crazy and I wouldn’t put it past her to call a meeting right now if she got pertinent information!”
"How's Sasha?"
There was a moment of silence, "How did you know?"
"Your voice always changes when you are with her. It's higher,” I commented dryly, “is she at your place right now?  That why you’re really asking about Laurel?  Because she caught you with her?”
I heard a door close on the other side of the phone before he continued, "We just broke up, again. I brought Laurel over."
"Wow," I scoffed into the phone.  My voice was barely above a whisper, “how smooth.”
"What?"
"Just when I think you can't physically get any worse, you prove me wrong."
"Cheyanne, please don't start."
"I'm just saying," I laughed to myself,  "You never change, Frank."
"Predictability is a good thing."
"I needed it. I'm worried about my mom," I admitted to myself with a sigh, "She found out about Lila's baby. And she's going to confront my dad about it. She was supposed to be over half an hour ago."
He had taken a sharp breath in, afraid to say anything.
"Frank, I know it wasn't him."
"What?"
"I know who took care of her in August. It wasn't my father."
"Chey…I don’t want to talk about this again."
"I know you did it to protect him. Just like he protected you with my little brother." I sighed, admitting what she'd always known, “but I-shit…can we just meet up and talk about this?"
"There is nothing to talk about."
“Yes there is!”
"Fine.  I'm coming over." He said, hanging up. I sighed again and put my hair up. If I was going to have the dreaded conversation with Frank, I was at the very least going to be comfortable.
So I went upstairs to my bedroom and went to my dresser. Pulling out a beige cami and matching sleep shorts, I threw them on, and grabbed a pair of fluffy socks.  Downstairs, I could hear the front door close, and I didn't know if it would be my mother or ex-boyfriend who never seemed to knock either. Both still had keys to her house anyways.
But just as I opened the door, I was pushed back into the room. Frank picked me up and slammed his lips into my own.
"This can't happen," I recalled between kisses, "We can't. Sasha. Laurel.  Frank-this-this is too messy!"
"I don't care," he practically yelled.  Part of me didn't want to care either, but the much larger part thought about New York, and the carousel I seemed to be on with him, “I just need to feel you, Chey.  I need to feel you, baby.”
I pulled away from him and stood up against his body. He kept lifting my chin and kissing me, but something stopped me this time from fully giving myself up to him.
Rather…someone.
"I can't," I sighed. He pulled away from me and gave me a sad look. I backed away and sat him down on what used to be our shared bed. "Frank. I can't."
"I love you though, Chey."
"I love you too," I admitted.  He got on his knees in front of me and kissed me once more, trying to pull back any part of our passion that he could.  He felt the same shock between them that he'd had since the day he met her, but in front of it was a large wall.  I pushed him away, “Frank…stop…”
He pulled away and slammed his fists on either side of the bed, "Then you tell me why can't we try again? I miss you so much Cheyanne.  I miss laying in this bed with you.  I miss waking up with you.  I miss us being a family…"
"Frank," I pleaded sadly, "Go home.  Please…just go back to your apartment.”
“I am home…”
He stood up, reaching for me again, but I held my arm out, pushing him away, "Go away Frank, please."
"I'm not leaving," he sighed, “I am home…I-“
"Well, I'm not talking to you," I responded, flipping over so I  wasn't facing Frank, “and if I can’t see you then you’re not here.”
“You’re being childish, Chey…”
“Being childish would be not communicating with me and making it so that our daughter walked in on you fucking your flavor of the week…oh wait…that has happened.”
"How's Julie?"
I turned back around, tears in my eyes, "You don't get to ask about her!  You don’t get to talk about her.  Not after what you put her through when you and Sasha started getting serious after you walked out on me.  After you walked out on us!"
"I'm her father!" he said in an angry voice.  He stood up in a rush.
"It's none of your business, Frank."
"She still living with Eve?"
"Leave her alone."
"I've never talked to her after that day," he said, "I've never looked for her.  I just want to see her.  I want to know about her, Chey."
“You don’t need to know about her life, Frank…she’s fine without you…hell, she’s fine without me…Eve’s making sure she’s okay.”
“Just one picture, Chey…I-I just need to see her.”
“FIne," I said passing him a picture, "Eve sent it last week."
The photograph was a small child in a Christmas dress.  The petite little girl couldn't be more than seven or eight years old.  Her bright smile contrasted against her caramel skin and dark brown hair.  Her brilliant blue eyes sparkled.
"This is her," he said, taking in a deep breath.  He bit his lip as his fingers glazed over the photo, "This is our daughter?  God…she’s getting so big…she-"
"Yeah," I replied blankly trying to look around the room.  Anywhere but his eyes, "Little Julie Harkness.  That's our baby, Frank."
Frank rubbed the back of his neck and continued to look at the picture. The two of them had an illicit affair.  One that would have that he broke Sam and Annalise's trust.
Annalise and Sam had known about their grandchild, but they never acknowledged it as the truth, because they’d never actually seen Cheyanne pregnant.  When she had originally found out, Frank had been running around the country with Annalise and she had been living with Eve.  And while Eve knew that Frank had managed to slip inside the city, and between her daughter’s thighs, neither Sam nor Annalise were willing to ask or encourage the relationship.
"She has your eyes," I  said, trying to cheer him up, "And your smile."
He shrugged, "She's got your everything else."
"She's intuitive, just like her father too."  I agreed.  I walked around the bed and met him at the foot of it.
Frank looked between his ex-girlfriend and the picture of his daughter.  Cheyanne's hand went over his and he put the picture on the bed.  When his hands were free, he put them up to hold her face, and pulled her to him once more.  There lips melded together as he laid her on the bed.  Without hesitation he slipped her shorts and underwear off before kicking his own pants off.
"I miss you Chey," he whispered as he entered her, “fuck, I’ve missed you, baby.”
