so this is my drawing mock-up for my halloween costume this year. i'm going to a party this weekend and wanted to impress
OKAY so the boots are heeled riding boots I dropped a pretty penny on last year for my Cruella costume. I don't remember where I bought them but the brand in the boot says "Forever" (wow how helpful). The fangs are these smaller prosthetics from Spirit. I also bought larger fangs but they looked and felt so wonky in my mouth. definitely looked less realistic and were difficult to talk with.
I didn't want to sew a corset so I bought one online that was cheap(er than others) and actually so good for how little i spent. I have a 34" bust and 30" waist, I wear women's medium (US) usually, but bought a large because I know how these corsets tend to fit and there were no reviews. Keep in mind that I didn't tighten the straps because I was excitedly throwing all the pieces on, but a large is perfect for me:

forgive my messy i-work-every-day-and-take-classes bedroom.
That above photo is a wip, I have some fishnets, spray blood, and earrings. Gonna put my hair up best I can to mimic an 18th century updo (my hair's shoulder length as you can see :/) and i'm gonna powder it. will probably touch up the color too, because my roots have grown out quite a bit. i have the choker, already had the gloves from Spirit a few years back.
the workable piece here is that short nightdress I picked up at Goodwill for $6. It's a little long (knee length) so it's pinned in the photo. i'm on the fence about using the sheet lacy stuff for sleeves, because it would look gorgeous asf. but also i like the sheer over the under skirt, also would need another layer if i DID use it for sleeves because the white is so see-through. on the fence.
Tumblr media
here's the very first drawing i did before purchasing the corset, babydoll chemise, choker, teeth, fishnets, etc.
i decided from there i wanted a more 18th century (albeit not quite so modest) look. didn't want any of those curvy bodice corsets that are more late 19th/early 20th century. I wore one of those for the Cruella costume and it was not my cup of tea. it was a cheaper corset but i didn't like that i wore it as a corset-top without anything underneath. it also bent weirdly and i wasn't very flexible in it. here's the fit below, cropped the person beside me because i didn't want to violate their privacy
Tumblr media
my costume this year is pretty last minute because i only decided to even go to the party a few days ago. i ordered the corset and made a couple trips to Spirit and Goodwill, and decided to recycle what i could from Cruella.
here's the second drawing where I decided i wanted puffed sleeves instead of the awkward hanging ones, and drew my hair in an updo.
Tumblr media
and finally as i've acquired some costume pieces i morphed it into this drawing here:
Tumblr media
it's pretty cohesive, i think, and seeing myself in it even though it's not complete is AWESOME. i can't wait to show off the final results.

“I am wearing the latest design from my tie series entitled The Snake Tie from my brand I Feel Like Bambi, paired with some of my favorite thrift finds. I sew the ties from up-cycled suit fabrics, so they’re completely sustainable which is very important to me. I would say my style is inspired by stories and characters. I like to dress based on how I’m feeling and what I’m thinking about. I also made The Friendship Tie, The Lover Tie, and The Loner Tie. So naturally I wanted to make a piece about someone who was a snake to me.“

I read somewhere that embroidered clothes need to be washed differently. Is this true? I read that right after getting a bunch of embroidery floss to visibly mend some clothes
Washing embroidered clothes
Yup! Check out my post on securing embroidery thread, which includes laundry instructions. My embroidery tag's also a good resource.
Handmade embroidery tends to be fragile, so it's important to properly secure your thread and take good care of the embroidered item. If you don't, you risk for your threads to come loose.
If you're not careful when washing embroidered items, your embroidery threads could get snagged on things like buttons or zippers in the washer.
Try to either wash them by hand (safest), or use your machine's delicate cycle combined with a laundry bag. Always let the item air-dry.

First sewing project ✅
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s a top!!! Pretty cute right? No!😡
The problem with it is that it’s not made out of clothing fabrics so it doesn’t fit very well and it turned out veryy revealing sadly. I made the halter neck too long. Oh well I’ve gotten a lot of experience from this and it’s a good first try for not having a pattern to follow. 🪡 🎀 🧵 🪡
(Also look at me doing the little coquette clothing haul scrunch on the sides of the top lmao😭)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
During this project I’ve learned how to sew buttonholes!!!!!! lol I always misread that word. When you sew buttonholes you use a special presserfoot. The picture in the middle are practice buttonholes. 🪡💕
That’s all!!! I’m hoping to actually find some sewing patterns soon as this was a bit of a struggle but other than that I did alright!!!😊
Also ignore how deathly pale I am!!!! Geez lol😅
I LOVE YOU💕

A staggering 60 million tons of polyester are produced annually, for things like clothes, couches, and curtains. That polyester production takes a toll on the climate and  environment, as only 15% of it gets recycled. The rest ends up in landfills or incinerated, which results in more carbon emissions. “The textile industry urgently requires a better solution to handle blended fabrics like polyester/cotton. Currently, there are very few practical methods capable of recycling both cotton and plastic—it’s typically an either-or scenario,” explains postdoctoral researcher Yang Yang of the Jiwoong Lee group at the University of Copenhagen’s chemistry department. “However, with our newly discovered technique, we can depolymerize polyester into its monomers while simultaneously recovering cotton on a scale of hundreds of grams, using an incredibly straightforward and environmentally friendly approach. This traceless catalytic methodology could be the game-changer.”

I've had this sweatshirt since high school (shout out to the lost and found ✌️), but the sleeves and waist have been slowly discoloring so I decided to dye it! It's 60% cotton 40% polyester, so I used RIT synthetic dye. The color held pretty well, although it seems a little lighter than expected to me.
Gonna sit with the green for a while and decide if I like it or if I want to go back in with some blue and try making teal.

When you go running in the woods in your running tights, elastane is the reason they fit you so comfortably. Elastane is an elastic material that allows the fabric to stretch and adapt to your body. But when elastane fibres are mixed with cotton, wool, nylon or other fibres, as is the case in many clothes today, the clothes become almost impossible to recycle. It is extremely difficult to separate out the different fibres, and therefore the materials in the clothes cannot be recycled. For this reason, clothes and other textiles are among the materials that we are the worst at recycling. Only about six per cent of clothes thrown away by Danish households are recycled. In comparison, 32 per cent of all plastic packaging is recycled in Denmark.
