The Grimm fairytales: The German Bluebeard

Just like with my Little Red Riding Hood post, I will now look at the German versions of the Blue Beard fairytale, as collected by the Grimm brothers. Wait, you ask, there’s a German Bluebeard? Yes! There’s even three of them!

But the reason you might not remember them is because these German versions were only present in the first edition of the Grimm’s collection of märchen. You see, the thing is that “Bluebeard” is a typically French fairytale, not originally belonging to Germany - and the tale itself has been heavly influenced and shaped by Charles Perrault. So when the Grimm brothers noticed that some of their tales were derived from the French Blue Beard, they removed them prompto. They wanted exclusively German fairytales, and they also exclusively wanted “true” folktales - anything with literary roots was not welcome in the Grimm’s book (though the irony is that there were many literary roots the Grimm completely missed).

Now, of the three “Bluebeard variants”, only two were removed, the ones I will describe below: “Blue-beard” and “The Castle of Murders/ The Murder Castle”. The third one was kept - it is the famous “Fitcher’s Bird” fairytale, that the Grimms kept because they perceived in it some specifically German elements. I will not talk of Fitcher’s Bird, I’ll rather keep it for a different time when I’ll look at the Grimm fairytales themselves. (For a deeper analysis of these versions VS Perrault’s, wait for more of my “A class on fairytales” post, since the “Bluebeard case” was the one we studied when it came to the evolution of fairytales between Perrault and Grimm)

Blue-Beard (The German version)

A man lived in the woods with three sons and a beautiful daughter. One day, a golden carriage with six horses and numerous domestics stopped by the house. A king was in it, and asked the woodsman for his daughter in marriage. The father agreed - and while the girl was afraid because the king had a blue beard, her father told her to still go with the man. However, since she was still worried about the situation, she went to her brothers and told them “If you hear me scream, wherever you are, drop what you are doing and come rescue me”.

The girl left with Blue-Beard and they arrived to his castle, filled with luxury items and where the girl’s every desires were fulfilld. She could have been very happy - but each time she saw the blue beard of the king, fright took over her. After some times the king have to leave on a journey: he gave the girl the keys that opened all the doors of his castle, and he told them she could open all of them - except one room, opened by a small gold key. The king tells her pretty bluntly that if she opens the door, she will “lose her life”. The girl promised to obey, and as soon as the king was out, she opened all the doors, seeing beyond them marvelous riches. When she reached the forbidden door, the girl deduced that, since the key was made of gold, the room must be hiding the most precious treasures of the castle - she became tormented by curiosity, she fought it to no avail, and she finally opened the door. But as soon as she opened it, a flood of blood came out (yeah, that’s the elevator scene in Shining), and she saw in the room numerous dead women attached to the walls, some reduced to the state of skeletons.

Scared, she closed the door, but the key dropped on the blood-covered floor. The girl tried to clean the key, but each spot she removed from one side of the key re-appeared on the other. She used all the cleaning methods she could think of, but each failed, so she hid it in hay in hope it would absorb the blood. The following morning Blue-beard came home, and he asked for the keys. The girl gave him back all of the keys, except the small golden key. She tried to tell her husband she lost the key in hay, but he understood what happened (that she was trying to use the hay to clean the blood), forced her to fetch the blood-stained key, and immediately he told her she will die and go to the forbidden room. He fetched a great knife, but the wife managed to gain some times by asking to do a prayer before dying.

The girl immediately climbed the staircase, and screamed as strongly as she could from a window “Brothers, dear brothers, come save me!”. Her brothers, who were drinking wine in the forest, heard their sister, took their horses and arrived. The girl, terrified, fell on her knee, hearing Blue-beard sharpen his knife from below. As she saw a cloud of dust arriving she screamed again “Brothers,dear brothers, come save me!”. And Blue-beard called her from below, telling her to come down since his knife was sharpened. But she saw by the window her brothers crossing the fields surrounding the castle, so she called them one more time, and she heard back the voice of her younger brother “Be happy, dear sister! We will be here ina moment!”.

Meanwhile Blue-beard, tired of waiting, decided to climb up the staircase to fetch his wife He took her by the hair and got ready to stab her in the heart, when the three brothers busted open the door of the castle, and with their sabers killed Blue-bear. They then hanged his corpse in the forbidden room, where the murderer joined his victims. The brothers then returned home with their sisters, and all the riches of Blue-beard were hers.

The Murder Castle (or the Castle of Murders depending on how you translate it)

Once upon a time, there was a shoemaker who ahd three daughters. One day, the shoemaker met a well-dressed man who had a somptuous carriage. He looked very wealthy, and he had fallen in love with one of the daughters of the shoe-maker. The girl, who was happy to have found a rich husband, quickly left with him. As they were on the road, as the night was falling, the well-dressed gentleman asks her in a rhyme “The moon is so clear, my horses are so fast, my beloved, do you regret nothing?”. The girl answered, “No, why I should I regret anything? I will always be safe with you.” But as she said that, a great terror appeared in her heart. They reached the man’s castle, in a great forest, and everything inside it was beautiful.

The following day, the gentleman said he had to leave for a few days due to important business. He gave her all the keys of the castle, so she could admire all her new belongings. She quickly explored the castle, and was happy with how beautiful everything was... Until she reached a basement, where an old woman was scrapping viscera off the floor. “What are you doing here, old woman?” “I am scrapping guts, my child. And tomorrow, I will be scrapping yours!”. The girl was so afraid she dropped the key she was holding, which fell in a container filled with blood. The old woman then said “Now your death is certain, because my master will see that you went into the room where nobody is allowed to enter, except me and my master.”

[Note that when the man gave his wife the keys, he did not gave her any instructions that she cannot go in this room, this is the first time we hear of this. “The Castle of Murders” has been written in a very oral style, which also means a choppy, slightly incoherent narrative style - for example, right after this sentence of the old woman, we have an aside by the narrator that explains “It must be known that the two older sisters of the girl died in the very same way”. What? We just learn that suddenly, out of nowhere, it just comes like “Oh by the way, there’s a whole other story with the girl’s sister we didn’t tell you before, and that bears no impact on the story, but we’ll just say it here).

As a cart of hay was about to leave the castle, the old woman told the girl her only way to survive was to hide under the hay and escape the castle through the cart. The girl did it - and when the lord came home and asked where his bride was, the old woman told him “Since I didn’t have anything else to do, and since she would have been killed tomorrow, I already killed her. Here is a lock of her hair, here is her heart, and here is a bit of her blood still warm. The rest was devoured by the dogs, and now I scrap the guts.” The lord was happy to learn she was dead.

But meanwhile, the young girl in the hay cart arrived at a nearby castle, where the hay had to be sold. She escaped the cart, she told her story to the occupants of the castle, and she was allowed to live there. Some time afterwards, the lord of this castle organized a grand feast where he invited all the nobles of the area. The girl had her face and her dress changed in such a way she couldn’t be recognized - because the “lord of the castle of murders” had been invited. When everybody as gathered, every guest had to tell a story. When it came to the young girl’s turn, she told the story described above. While she told her tale, her husband (who was a count/earl apparently) was so afraid he tried to escape - but the good lord of the castle had prepared everything, and the forces of justice cpatured the beautiful gentleman. The tribunal imprisoned the murderer, had his castle destroyed, and gave all of his riches to the young girl. She then married the son of the benevolent lord that had rescued her, and she lived for many years with him.

I'm surprised people see Tadashi as the victim in his relationship with Ainosuke, when it's Tadashi the one who time and time again takes away Ainosuke's agency, without being able to see that he is throwing him unto unhappiness. I can't help but think that if Tadashi was not working at Shindo's house, Ainosuke would have maybe left or broke with the family. But he can't do that if he wants the relationship with Tadashi going on, seing how Tadashi is set on enforcing the family rules...

Hmm.. I def agree with the fact that Tadashi is not what most fandom makes out of him, my man (I mean, Adam’s man) is a 100% Slytherin. But I disagree with blaming him for this, after all the revealed info. The environment they were both raised in made their situation complicated.

I like Tadashi a lot, he’s probably my fav thing about this anime, bc he’s a dark horse, and I’m once again surprised, that so little ppl see him for who he really is, portraying him as an innocent puppy, which he is definitely not.

Now to why I think both Tadashi and Adam are victims of the dad and aunties in this situation.

We can of course say “if only they told each other how they really feel...”, but like we can say it about any love story really. Every author knows it’s no fun. The truth is that yes, they both hurt each other, and yes, if they were honest about their feelings things would’ve been different, but as I’ve already wrote under that “toxic” commentary on YT, lets look at the whole situation from both of their point of views:

We know that Adam when he was little always treated Tadashi as an equal, he never ever thought of him as someone lower than him and after their fall out, the only reason for this “harsh” treatment (well, besides their confirmed kink) was that Adam tried to get a reaction out of him, so Tadashi would stand up for himself, bc Ainosuke got mad about Tadashi caving to his dad’s wishes and abandoning him, when he needed him the most.

But now, knowing the fact that Tadashi was his dad’s secretary and was under his control, let’s see it from his perspective: Tadashi wanted to stay by Adam’s side, Adam’s dad implied that if Tadashi did say smth, he’s gonna be.. well, dismissed and they won’t see each other ever again. That’s what caused Tadashi to stay silent in that moment. Ainosuke instead saw this as a “he’s not on my side” thing, well, because. Tadashi won’t tell him his problem, bc dad and aunties control everything, so even if he does tell him, what a teen would do really? He didn’t have any powers back then to make his dad do anything.

And that’s when it all gone to shit, since they both were hurt for their own reasons. It’s easy to say leave the family, but 1stly nobody explained to Adam still that he’s physically and psychologically abused by his family, he sees it as them “loving him” and sadly also loves them, bc nobody told him, that love wasn’t supposed to be like that really. He definitely feels that smth is not right and feels emotionally exhausted there bc of this treatment, but did he ever consider leaving? I really don’t think so. He feels obligated to be worthy of a family, who “loves” him.

Do you think, for example, that Akashi Seijuro hates his dad for what he did to him? No. Does he understand that he wasn’t at fault for what happened to him and that his dad instead of comforting his child after his mother’s death, who was his only safe haven, made everything worse? I don’t think he does. Like his mom gave him basketball, an escape from all that family’s obligations and strictness. After her death, it was the only thing left that brought him joy, but his dad ruined even that, saying that if he’s gonna be bad at it/lose, he’d take it away from him too. Does Akashi see this as emotional abuse? No, he sees it like “well, I have to be the best bc I was born in such powerful family, so if my dad says that I must be best at everything, then I must.”

I personally hate such parents a lot. To me it doesn’t matter if Adam’s dad didn’t know about aunties hitting his child. Like if he was too busy to notice this and have no time for his kid and made his childhood miserable, it doesn’t make it any better really.

Same as with Akashi’s dad. Some are like “he was probably also grieving about his wife”. Emm? He was like this from the beginning, bc he treated Akashi not as his son, but as his heir. And yes, that’s different things. Same with Endeavor and Todoroki. Your child is not your post production thing.

2ndly they were too young, even if they knew about each others feelings and he didn’t feel obligated and told everyone to fuck off, they’d be on the streets now, but also Adam’s dad doesn’t seem like a guy who’d leave them alone really. Also eloping seems very romantic, but I don’t think it is, esp when you’re teens. Did you want him to sell some expensive watch and go live on Hawaii or smth? Bc finding a decent job there would be difficult at this age, esp with everyone knowing who your dad is. Chen Ke from “Antidote” survived bc he was 27 and had connections and some great friends. Adam was in high school, where would he go exactly?

Now let’s go back to now. Obviously all this time it didn’t even cross Tadashi’s mind that for Ainosuke he comes first and that he would throw everyone under the bus to make Tadashi stay with him. As we see at the end, he legit believed that Adam was planning to send him to jail and didn’t get that he said it just to shaken he up and that he knew who he’d set up for this from the beginning.

To Adam obviously it doesn’t matter whether they’re in a quarrel or not, he would never him go. Yes, he’s mad at him, he’s angry and hurt, but Tadashi’s still the person he needs the most, he’s still the person who brightens his days, even tho he deliberately behaves like he annoys him. He always looks at him and looks at him and looks at him, but then hisses smth to hurt him. Bc he knows that he needs him, but he also hates that he needs him, bc he thinks it’s unrequited.

And that’s how their classic romance goes in hellish circles. No one wants to talk as usual. Adam is mad Tadashi is like that bc his dad turned him into a slave with no opinion, while Tadashi is scared that Adam would be taken away from him bc of his ugly family.

Now I still think that no one and I mean no one can take Tadashi from Adam now, he is his precious. So my plan is... if Tadashi made aunties do smth against him or to get rid of him, aunties will go for sure. The problem is Tadashi still doesn’t get that he comes first, so we’re stuck in this hell still.

So anyways, my point is Adam’s heart basically sings “you got a hold of me, don’t even know your power” to Tadashi, but he doesn’t hear it, bc of his insecurities, the way he was raised and his status. But yes, he holds all the power. He’s both Adam’s sanity and insanity. No matter how cheesy it sounds he was basically his only ray of sunshine in the darkness, if you take it away, that’s what it leads to, that’s why Ainosuke-sama needs more ppl who care for him. I don’t want anyone to die next time, just cause Tadashi and Adam fought about where to put their new couch lmao. I’m kidding, but you know what I mean. And kill the aunties, pls seriously, we need to be free.

Also ppl need to remember that like lots of animes/characters are parcially inspired by some other animes/characters, also the chosen seiyuus are also very important, there are lots of stuff like jokes and references, that creators use, from characters being fully inspired by smth like “Assassination classroom” characters based on KNB, to little stuff like Levi dressed in Akashi’s uniform in chibi AOT bc Hiroshi Kamiya. Utsumi already said before stuff like she sometimes think of a perfect voice for the character and then fully forms him, we also know her clear love for sports animes. So yes, I doubt Tadashi/Kuroko thing is a coincidence and even tho someone was like “zone? is this knb or smth?” I was like no, zone is actually a common thing in sports, even tho most associate it with KNB including me, it’s not like its their invention, but there were things inspired by this for sure, and from other sports animes too and no, I don’t mean the basic sports anime tropes, I mean, like way too specific things, some character designes, too. And yes, Langa appearence and personality wise is a rinharu child for real, I can literally split his scenes in “that’s Haru”, “that’s Rin”.

That’s why I’ve said that this situation in fandom reminds me of Kuroko/Akashi situation a lot, bc same as here in KNB ppl for some reason automatically thought that Kuroko is this innocent sheep and Akashi is the wolf (but also like it was Akashi who chose to dress as red riding hood, while Kuroko was a wolf lmao), not even seeing who is in reality more dangerous and who can easily control who. It just buffles me bc it’s not some deep analisys really. I mean once again there’s a reason for the saying that the sub holds all the power over the dom.

And like just bc someone yells or threatens ppl constantly doesn’t necessarily mean he is a psycopatic killer, and just bc someone is quiet and doe-eyed, doesn’t mean he isn’t. I didn’t think we needed to explain this to someone, but aparently we do?

And it honestly kills me just how superficially ppl are watching things these days. It really gives me war flashbacks to stuff like the last mdzs s1 episode, where ppl started to comment things like “how LZ can be so heartless” lmao. Or that anonymous ask “do you think haru misses rin?”. Like you don’t see thing at all? Grey substance no needed, while watching things?

P.S. I also would die to see Adam vs Tadashi race just bc I for some reason can bet all my money, that it’s the same situation as with Akashi refusing to ankle break Kuroko, no matter how mad he is. I just can’t imagine Ainosuke hitting Tadashi in the face with a board. Like 100% sure he wouldn’t even try tbh.

Bai Qi’s Vitality [Character Study]

Essay train chugging away at full speed here, haha. This comparison came into my mind while I was ruminating over Xu Mo's post and it was actually what made me jump the gun to push out Xu Mo's before I read his Prison Date (more accurately Imprisoned Dreams Date...) because this essay for Bai Qi jumps off of Xu Mo's post.

Disclaimer: I use CN translations and also spoiler warning for R&S synopses for end of Season 1.

First, I want to quote some lines from weibo user @我写文太差被关了起来 (lit. "My writings are so bad I got locked up" LOL) whose post I don't really agree with, but she wrote these three lines for Bai Qi that sunk its claws into me and won't leave:

"If I can only choose one word to describe Bai Qi then I would choose 'vitality'."

"He doesn't wish to love this world."

"He has always loved this world."

If Xu Mo both yearns for companionship [Loneliness] but is innately separated from the world [Into Your World] and ruthless to himself in accepting that furthering his goals may continue to keep him alone, then Bai Qi is separated and aloof from the world by choice.

If Xu Mo has a detached view and an intellectual curiosity or fixation on the abstract concept of survival of humanity, then Bai Qi is down on the ground experiencing the world in its natural state and trying to protect it, individual by individual.

I'm not saying one is better than the other (they're both my biases) but it's neat to contrast them. I've mentioned here and there that the LovePro men are foils for each other in interesting ways.

Anyway, I wrote this piece [Price of Freedom] but there was a missing link I had a hard time articulating and now it's been delivered to me! So, while Bai Qi has made MC his home and the North Star he always goes towards, he can actually survive on his own because of his innate core of justice.

I know it's a common thought that Bai Qi revolves around MC too much and she's like a goddess placed on a pedestal because she gave him a new life, but what I want to argue is that while she did give him a new lease on life she isn't the sole meaning of his existence.

MC is incredibly important to Bai Qi, but the quote below shows what she really gave him when he awakened his Evol from her piano playing.

"His existence didn't need a so-called father, what people called friends, or an accepted meaning." [Campus Date]

He becamse self-actualized right then and there. He doesn't need to rely on anyone or anything to live now except for what he himself decides on.

Now, I'm going to plop an entire scene from his [Fullmoon Date] because it's going to lead into my next points. Please keep in mind the words from the weibo user at the top:

(But also, why did Elex translate the entire date into present tense? Ballsy LOL. Not only does it break consistency from their previous dates but the source text was in past tense and not written for present tense.)

The full moon was reflected in his eyes and in my muddled state I could faintly hear the growl issued from his throat.

His claws slowly grew and tore into his palm. A blood-red light gathered in the center of his hand and it became a sparkling crimson heart-shaped crystal.

Wizard: Bai Qi, do you really think you can defeat me?

Wizard: If you could, then you wouldn't have chained yourself here together with me for so many years.

Bai Qi: It's different now.

Wizard: What?

Wizard: Haha, don't tell me you're going to throw away your humanity? Then you really will become a monster that is neither human nor beast!

Bai Qi: I don't care.

Bai Qi lowered his head and looked deeply at the girl in his embrace, a tenderness in his eyes that he never had before.

He softly brushed the hair on her forehead and leaned close to her ear, gentle but unwilling to say goodbye.

Bai Qi: I'm very lucky.

Bai Qi: That, right before I fell into the darkness, there was someone who caught me.

Bai Qi: Whether it was apple pie or lemon pie, the things you made... they were all delicious.

Bai Qi: I wanted to lie down on the grass with you and take a nap. I could have also lent you my tail as a pillow.

Bai Qi: I wanted to be able to grab your hand every time you ran, not as a hunter and their prey and not for training.

Bai Qi: Thank you, [MC].

Wizard: What are you mumbling about?

Bai Qi didn't concern himself with the wizard's provocation and he carefully placed the girl's body in a safe corner. The next time he raised his head, his face was filled with resolve.

In the next second, he crushed the crystal in his hand.

Pausing here to point out the epic callbacks Papergames always does. I checked the ENG and while there was no problems there, the CN text echoed the same structure entirely.

"Then I'm very lucky. There was someone who caught me right before I hit the bottom." [CH7.18]

"And you saved me. Don't lower your head, look at me. Don't feel insecure and don't feel like you're useless. You caught me again right before I hit the bottom." [CH15.7]

"The day I met her, there were gingko leaves drifting and falling slowly through the air, and it was the most beautiful time in late autumn. It was also the darkest time of my life. But she was the one who caught me tightly when I fell." [Spring Festival Date]

Returning back to the [Fullmoon Date]:

I slowly stood up, shivering uncontrollably, but I did my best to keep up a smile and carefully walked towards him.

Bai Qi: Stay away from me!!

MC: ......

His voice was hoarse and rough. The snow gradually lightened and softly fell onto that enormous body, like a sad but gentle embrace.

Bai Qi: Don't...

Bai Qi: ... Don't look at me.

My mind was filled with Bai Qi's face and, before today, I couldn't have imagined the close calls and fights he had experienced.

He would wag his tail in happiness and, when he was displeased, his ears would twitch back and forth, selling him out.

His hair was soft and his hands full of calluses, but when squeezed they were warm.

MC: Bai Qi, now I finally know why you were trapped here.

MC: You locked yourself up, right?

Bai Qi: ......

MC: All these years, it was to protect the townspeople and to fight that wizard.

Bai Qi tensed his body and I slowly raised my voice, repeating my conclusions again.

MC: You chained yourself here to protect others.

MC: In order not to let people come close, did you spread the rumors about eating Red Riding Hood yourself?

MC: Everyone is terrified of you, hates you, and calls you a monster, but you still protect them.

I approached him, bit by bit, and the snow fell into the corners of my eyes, slowly dripping down.

MC: This Big Bad Wolf of yours... you aren't qualified at all.

Bai Qi: ... These are just your guesses.

MC: Then you can tell me.

MC: No matter how many times it's said, as long as you talk to me, I'll listen.

Bai Qi: NO ONE WOULD BELIEVE A MONSTER!

MC: I believe.

MC: Besides, you aren't a monster.

MC: Let's go home. I'll bring you your favorite apple pie tomorrow.

Bai Qi slowly turned around and the snow fell into his pained eyes. I saw him remain in place.

Bai Qi: ... You aren't scared of me?

MC: I'm scared.

Bai Qi: Then why...?

MC: But I... want to understand you, little by little. I want to understand the real you.

It was impossible for me to imagine how many times he had once been misunderstood and been attacked. He sifted through this heap of suffering, again and again, but all he managed to save up was a bit of sweetness.

Yet he relied on this sweetness to solidify himself into a voiceless and silent blade, standing up steadfast in the abyss and never wavering.

My hand finally touched Bai Qi's "hand". His claws were pointed and held no warmth.

MC: You defeated that wizard, right?

Bai Qi: ......

Bai Qi: Mm, he's gone.

MC: Fairytales always write about knights and a prince on a white horse defeating the evil wizard and protecting the peace of the country.

Bai Qi: I'm not as great as you say and I've never thought about changing the way others look at me.

Bai Qi: I just use my own way... to be who I want to be.

Bai Qi: I'm not that prince on a white horse written in fairytales.

MC: Prince Charming certainly wouldn't be like how you are now.

His ears trembled and it was like he suffered a bit of a blow.

MC: Prince Charming always has to ride on a horse, wear a stylish cape, and wield a golden glittering sword.

MC: He has to always be graceful and maintain a heroic appearance.

Bai Qi: ......

MC: He wouldn't be like you, in such dire straights and so miserable, even giving up your own freedom.

MC: Even being beaten black and blue, with a bloody nose and swollen face, and yet crawling up out of the mud to go and protect other people.

MC: How is this a prince on a white horse?

His claws trembled slightly and his tail drooped down. His gaze was stuck to the ground, as if he were waiting for some sort of judgment.

MC: Bai Qi, you're a hero.

After he heard my words, his head shot up and those amber eyes were filled with doubt and shock.

MC: Even when you're covered in injuries and your clothes are ripped and torn, you still continue to stand in front of everyone.

MC: Even if there was no glory or reward, you would continue to use your own way to protect them. To protect me.

MC: You're the most foolish of heroes.

MC: But you're also... my hero.

First, more callbacks to Bai Qi's view about other people:

"At that time he said to me, 'Since you can't change the way others look at you, why not just follow your heart and do what you want to do.' These words had a great impact on me." [Campus Date]

"When did I ever care about other people's views? Except for yours, I don't care about any others." [Wish Date]

HONESTLY, the entire prince vs. hero speech the MC gave was just so darn good. The bit about how he crawls through the mud, battered and bruised, to continue protecting people? I had to take a moment after reading that and recalled the weibo user's line about how she would describe Bai Qi with just the word "vitality". The crazy thing is that they wrote this BEFORE Halloween was even announced.

Now, coming back to this essay, this is showing how he can live without the heroine. That was exactly what he was doing in [Fullmoon Date]; she gives more meaning and softness to his life, but he wasn't living an empty life before her either. Like he said, he was just doing what he wanted to do and being the person he wanted to be.

(whispers) He doesn't wish to love the world. He has always loved the world.

The winter world version of him shows this incredibly well. Yes, he was cold and curt towards MC throughout the whole thing but he also had that unchangeable core of kindness and justice and, as I mentioned in my Xu Mo post, MC draws her strength from how Bai Qi is always the same.

[Rumors & Secrets: Lost]

"How is he?"

Bai Qi's voice sounded and everyone in the rehearsal hall turned their heads to look in the direction of the door. The man's wounds had already been treated simply and there was a small gauze taped on his left cheek.

The female team member, who was in charge of comforting the man, gave a forced smile: "Not too good. I think he still needs..."

Before she finished speaking, the man suddenly shuddered violently. He gripped the blanket on his body tightly and tried to hide himself inside. His eyes shook and his expression was guarded as he carefully stared at Bai Qi's movements. The look in his eyes was as if he was watching a monster. The female team member nodded her head, a bit awkwardly, at Bai Qi and hurriedly brought the man away. When they passed beside Bai Qi, she heard that man muttering to himself.

"Monster..."

Bai Qi also heard it, but he only looked at the piano beside the window indifferently. That spotless white color was stained with blood, looking extremely wrong.

"Clean everything up."

Everyone who was stunned in their place came back to themselves and rushed to resume their actions. The short man sidled over to Bai Qi and it took him a long time before he could say: "Captain Bai, don't mind that..."

Bai Qi didn't say anything and only lightly nodded his head. He really didn't put what had happened just now in his mind, or perhaps one could say he was already used to it.

He saved many people under the hands of different criminals: some would thank him, others would be terrified to the point of being unable to speak, but the majority of them, after seeing his power, would see all Evolvers as monsters.

Look! LOOK! He continues doing his job even without knowing the MC and protecting others, despite whatever people think of him and say about him.

MC's presence in his life gives him:

"She's the one who told me I could live more strongly, and she's also the one who told me I could live more gently." [Spring Festival Date]

Her love gives him the sweetness his world is lacking, but he doesn't need it either. Again, I want to emphasize that it doesn't make it any less important and they're probably both halves of the whole that makes up the Bai Qi we all know and love, but he won't have the gaping hole and conflict that Xu Mo is going through LOL.

Okay, now we're going into extreme spoiler territory where these R&S synopses show Bai Qi's perspective before the end of the world and Season 1.

[CN Weibo Topic: Before the Comet Strike]

Looking up at the clear sky, before the world was displaced, the memories imprinted on our minds would not be erased.

[Frontier: A Message Unable to be Passed On]

At the last second, he was still quietly organizing and protecting this city.

The words he ordinarily wouldn't say in front of you turned into gentle whispers that melted into the night breeze.

The answer and door at the end of the world would surely be revealed in the near future.

[CN Fearless ER - Rumors & Secrets: Frontier]

Bai Qi leaned against his motorcycle and suddenly felt that what he had always protected in the past—what that girl had always protected in the past—was not only the entire city and this world, including the people who weren't willing to give up on anything, but also the most ordinary and small things in life.

It was to have a not-so-big place, a hot steaming breakfast in the morning, a light for him when he returned home late, and the one phrase "Welcome home".

"It would have been nice if that could have lasted a bit longer."

I can't translate this entire R&S because there's too much context and build up missing, but the important takeaway is his utter conviction in the MC and how he wants her to continue running forward without looking back and his belief in how their destinations will always overlap. If they continue to move forward, he believes they'll definitely meet again.

MY HEART. BECAUSE HIS DESTINATION IS ALWAYS HER!

I've always mentioned that MC and Bai Qi parallel each other so much that they're almost like mirrors. They both prioritize justice, the lives of ordinary and innocent people, and they are each other's source of courage, motivation, and determination to keep moving.

They add to each other's lives, but they don't need each other in order to keep getting up after falling and fighting for their belief of protecting the world and their loved ones.

Lastly, to finish off my new ode of love for Bai Qi, I'm going to end with the weibo user's words again:

"He doesn't wish to love this world."

"He has always loved this world."

btw, I love how Colle has never seen a diamond sword before but knows what diamonds are. These Red Steves never learned how to craft a diamond sword, even though crafting a diamond sword is exactly like crafting any other sword. Guess we have to assume that this world doesn’t follow Minecraft logic.

Yoo, this episode has environmental storytelling?

Like, that Steve buried under the blue crystal? It’s a perfect snapshot of what the battle a long time ago was.

It’s possible that Diamond Steves are made out of diamond and not flesh, considering that they don’t look like skeletons or the messed up Blue Steve spirit in the first episode of Rainbow Quest. Without flesh, they cannot decay.

LeBron James might be out of the NBA playoffs, but he’s still angling to be a big part of the summer entertainment season. That’s because HBO Max’s list of new releases for July 2021 is highlighted by a very special sequel.

Space Jam: A New Legacy premieres on July 16. will find LeBron teaming up with the Looney Tunes in a Warner Bros. IP-extravaganza. Can ‘Bron and the Looney Tunes beat the Goon Squad before Warner Bros.’ server steals LeBron “Bronny” Jr.’s soul (or something)? Let’s hope so. The two other major WB releases this month, No Sudden Move and Tom and Jerry in New York, both come to HBO Max on July 1.

HBO Max is also bringing some fun TV shows to its stream this month. The long-awaited Gossip Girl revival premieres on July 8. That will be followed by Mike White’s satirical limited series The White Lotus on July 11. Ronan Farrow’s excellent book Catch and Kill gets a docuseries adaptation on July 12.

July 1 will see the arrival of library titles like Planet of the Apes, Reservoir Dogs, and Scream. Recent hit Judas and the Black Messiah comes to HBO Max on that date as well. It’s a good month for geek TV with the Doctor Who 2020 Christmas Special (July 1), Nancy Drew season 2 (July 3), and Batwoman season 2 (July 27) all coming home to their streaming residence.

Thoughts on the comic and Skully's Identity. [Slight Spoiler Warning? Not really any plot spoilers just details and characters.]

So a lot of people accept that Jay is probably Skully, either surviving or something else. However there's also speculation that it could be Alex, Jessica, or even Seth Wilson, a few thinking about Tim. (Though I would rule him out as the artist drew what he looked like in the Comic on another post) So I raked out every detail I can. Of course it can all just be a stylistic choice but whatever - make of it what you will.

It could just be some new random asshole, but It's a given they know Jessica, so it is very likely to be Jay. He presumed she was gone, unless he watched the last Entry. That would also explain "It's you" sort of "oh shit" moment. Jay was also set on looking for Jessica, so if he did survive, you could assume that would still be one of his motives. Tim wouldn't likely have that "it's you" moment because he knows Jessica is alive. Alex might have that reaction though. I believe he presumed that she was gone.

It also takes two things from Brian and Tim. The hoodie and the plastic mask. So this person has likely seen both of them and came to imitate their appearance.

Coat Buttons

The Jacket appears to have snap on metal buttons. It's typical for this style of jacket (similar to a utility jacket, which would be useful and warm to run all over the goddamn woods at night) to have the buttons placed on top of the left side for a men's jacket. (Of course it could just be any person in a men's styled jacket, but still.)

I picked this out because it's paid attention to very carefully as a detail. Of course that's good for continuity, but I know for filming Marble Hornets they were very careful with detail and hinting at things.

2. Height

They're only seen crouching up to a door with Jessica on the other side, but if they both stood straight, they'd come to be about the same height, which was true for Jay and Jessica in the series.

3. You are broken but you CAN be fixed

This is what the masked figure says to Jessica. Similar to ToTheArks video saying Alex was broken, but couldn't be fixed. That might line up with Jay's motives because he continued to think he could solve the situation. It could be argued he also believed Alex could be saved from the Operator. It it were Alex, it could be his own changed perspective in whatever "form" this is now. That would be quite interesting to see why he would go from wanting to destroy the tapes to actively giving someone the tapes.

4. Not a point but something I noticed.

On the Rosswood bulletin, there is a blurry poster that looks like it could be a "Missing" sign. Who for - I don't know, but it does kind of appear they have glasses, so it could be Alex? This could also just be meaningless background illustration.

In the same frame, Adam also talks about people getting lost in the woods and says, "The Majority of them were recovered safely but," and he stops. That's a pretty cliffhanger "but" there Adam.

Closer inspection of the Rosswood Map shows Rosswood Rd, mentioned in the series, and was supposed to be the road off the usual parking lot they stopped in when meeting up, and an X location to hard to read atm, but it is off the beaten path.

5. In a silly doodle drawing in the comic files, I did notice this poster with a skull on it. It may just be nothing but could also be implying that whoever is in the skull mask died and came back.

Also I appreciate that the soda is Conk.

6. It's Fall about 10 years later after the first incidents in Rosswood began, in the timeline 2019 ish, but that is apparent from the trees outside and the time the comic was created at.

7. Jessica has a "Sarah" in her phone. Could he literally the millions of Sarah's but I'll point it out anyway. But more interesting barely covered is Tim's contact.

8. I was thinking about why their seems to be Blue Lenses in Skully's mask, they're even visible from a distance. Now this is really digging at the bottom of barrel but when Jessica grabs the pipe to defend herself, it's highlighted by red for emphasis. Red and Blue have often been a scheme for duelity and such.

This repeats again in the second title page:

A lot could be discerned from it. Maybe she is Skully, like a second half of her, as one of her nightmares is fighting against herself. May also not mean that and be another symbol of duelity, red vs blue.

I don't think the blue is styling choice because you can quite clearly see eyes in Masky's drawing. I believe there is definitely something covering their eyes - like lenses. Their "fashion choices" are also leaning towards the expensive side I noticed. Unless they just stole it went to a goodwill and got lucky. A utility jacket like that would cost somewhere beyond a $100 unless you're lucky. I'd pay to see a cryptid running around in Gucci in butt-fuck-nowhere Alabama in the middle of the night. Or who knows maybe Alex got some prescription lenses put in that shit.

9. Do I even have to explain the symbolism of a Jay.

10. I can say with good certainty this probably symbolises Jessica's memory of Alex.

11. Some damning evidence, whoever is in the mask has access to the original entry files, not just downloaded YouTube stuff. Jay, Tim, Totheark would likely have access to that. Alex was pretty dead-set on having all the traces deleted, I'd doubt he'd have them all uploaded to a computer.

12. No idea what this might represent besides some metaphor for life being a merry go round, but in the postcard Skully is chilling on a horse lmao. "Stuck in a loop of unhappiness." Ring a bell?

13. Can't attach another photo but the abandoned house Jessica goes to has "Bones" written on it, much like the Hospital did. In the original series they said that graffiti was just there, so maybe they decided to work with it? Who knows maybe it's some kind of new group? Maybe ToTheArk vs "Bones?" You CAN'T be fixed vs You CAN be fixed.

14. I also can't speculate what it exactly means, but it's obvious Skully can talk, not seen previously with the others. Whether out of an inability or just not wanting to. Could be argued it's a person behind the mask by choice, not volition. We also don't really know if Brian chose his path or became that. But he became a masked cryptid after supposedly "dying". We also never see people "die" just assume they have died or are dead and they disappear. Tim implies that it's just feeding off them, physically or mentally. They always die off camera or get fucked off somewhere by the egg head. They appear dead afterwords, with Jay and Brian, but still missing. All of their bodies were taken by the monster and are god knows where in some seperate dimension. This is borderline r/im14andthisisdeep but what is "death" in this series. Does it mean gone permanently or just "gone" ... For an unknown amount of time. People die, but do they stay that way? Or do they die ... In one sense, but not the other, Losing something of themselves from before, and becoming something new. That would awfully explain Brian's behavior after Alex "killed" him. It's also implied there are others apart of ToTheArk that were never shown in the series, suspected to be other members of the original cast who maybe had "died" and come back as someone else. Something broken.

Tim seems to be an outlier. It's presumed he has avoided death, and essentially kept his mentality. But still slips into another form out of his control, usually in response to the monster or the hooded man being near and stealing his pills and shit. Is he between death? Is that why doucheslender follows him? "The one that got away." Istg I don't take drugs.

Amy and Laurie - Little Women

I have only seen Timothee Chalamet in Little Women so my views on this might change. But considering there were two women he tried to woo, my heart only went pitter patter with Laurie and Amy. Their banter, her calling him out on his crap, the untying of that apron, swoon.

Phillip and Elizabeth - The Crown

Matt Smith is very attractive, but I never thought of him as sexy on Doctor Who. No, it wasn’t until The Crown that I realized how sexy he could be. His making Elizabeth pink faced and breathless the day before their wedding, their epic fight during that weird AF horse sex scene, and his swearing to be a better man for Elizabeth at the end of season 2. He was a bit barbaric and neanderthalish but it worked for Elizabeth and it works for me too.

Poldark/Demelza

There’s another girl that Poldark fancies and is even with a bit (unfortunately) but you don’t get the same feelings for him with her as you do when he’s with Demelza. They’re relationship is fiery and very slap and kiss-ish (quite literally - girlfriend gives him a backhand heard around the 18th century world).

The way they look at each other. The way they support each other and have each other’s backs. The way Poldark is with his kids. Mmm. Mmm. Mmm.

Lucius Hunt and Ivy Walker - The Village

Oh, Lucius Hunt, you beautiful weirdo. The combo of angst and protectiveness was just divine. I love a man of few words that shows rather than says his emotions. His running to get Ivy when the red-hooded creatures were out and about and grabbing her hand to pull her to safety. Yum. His tongue lashing of Ivy for always putting words in his mouth and then his “yes, I will dance with you on our wedding night.” Double yum.

Light of the Sun and Stars Chapter 6: Tom and Ponyhead Part 1

Summary: His whole life Marco Diaz has been raised by monsters, living under the cruel rule of their leader, Toffee. But one day Marco escapes into Mewni where he meets a magical princess and Mewman like himself, who begins teaching him all about her world. Together they will learn about life, love, and the lights within each of them, as they change their world forever.

Chapter Synopsis: Two of Star’s old friends show up, wanting hang out with their friend like they used to, but when Marco tags along with them jealousy gets the better of them and their fun night on the town turns into a prank war on the unsuspecting citizens of Butterfly Village.

It was another quiet evening in the Butterfly Castle, a perfect follow-up to another hectic and stress-filled day for the Mewnian Princess, and Star was grateful for the peace and quiet she was allowed to experience here in the solitude of her room. She had just come from her and Marco's usual meet-up from the top of the tower, the setting sun filling her with a content and warm feeling that had left her feeling exhausted, as the stressful energy she had been using to plow through the day dissolved, leaving her tired and sore.

Marco, on the other hand, had been extra chatty that night, going on and on about all the things he was learning, having practically memorized the book Mr. Candle had given him and trying out a large number of them with Jackie and Janna. Star had just smiled and listened, finding the boy's hyper but positive energy addictive, his child-like innocence making him way too cute for words. She made a mental note to buy him more books as soon as possible, Marco's obvious thirst for knowledge giving her yet another reason to spoil the boy needlessly. Not that she cared. But once the sun had set and the stars began filling the night sky above Mewni, she had decided it was best to call it quits and head for bed, wishing her friend a good night before leaving for her room.

So now she was content in the silence of her room, stretching out on her bed, releasing a deep sigh, as she closed her tired eyes, letting them rest for the first time since waking up that morning. But her peace was shattered as she heard a soft thump from her window as something hard tapped up against it. Star's eyes flew up and she let out a annoyed groan, pulling her tired body off of her soft bed and stomping over to her window, throwing it open in a huff. She leaned out the window, looking down at the source of the commotion with annoyance.

But her face quickly switched from a frown to a smile as she saw the two characters hanging below her window, staring up at her. One was a teenage boy around Star's age. He had pale, purpulish skin and flaming red hair, that was stylishly spiked around the duel horns sticking out of the top of his head. He had three eyes, one located in the center of his forehead, all of them a deep red color. On his cheeks were two tiny flames that shrank or grew with his emotions, which meant they shifted around a lot. He wore a tattered red shirt and black shorts cut below the knees in an obvious style choice, and black boots. He smiled up at the girl with a tooth grin, exposing his sharp fangs. The other was a floating, blue unicorn head with a pink mane that constantly flowed even in the lack of an obvious wind source. She was giving Star a sassy look as she floated next to the boy, sparkles of all colors constantly flowing out of the bottom of her neck, disintegrating into the empty air where her body should be.

“Hey guys!” Star called to them, giving them an enthusiastic wave, all signs of fatigue gone from her now recharged body.

“Hey,” Tom confidently called back, giving her the tiniest of nods, while next to him Pony Head screamed, “What up B-Fly?!”

“What are you two doing here?” she asked, leaning more comfortably on the windowsill.

“We heard you've been locked up inside that castle for way too long,” Tom said.

“And we decided to bust you out!” Pony Head finished with a yell. “So, girl, are you ready to parr-tty?!”

“Oh, yeah, am I ever,” Star said with a sigh, rolling her eyes. “But how do I get down?”

“Got you covered,” Tom replied, showing Star the long rope he had brought with him and Star gave him a mischievous grin.

She descended the rope quickly, landing lightly on the ground, her friends walking over to greet her.

Once her feet were planted firmly on the floor, Tom asked, “So ready to get going?”

“Hey Star!” The three froze, looking up to Star's still-opened window, Marco leaning out of it, looking down at them with a wide smile. “Who are these two?”

Star opened her mouth to reply when she heard a voice hiss behind her, “Star?” She turned to see Tom staring at her, his face dark with suspicion. “Who exactly is that?” he continued, pointing an accusing finger up at the boy. Next to him, Pony Head raised an eyebrow at the girl, her face looking equally as suspicious.

“I guess introductions are in order, huh?” Star asked, with a sheepish smile.

“Ah, yeah that would be nice,” Pony Head huffed in annoyance, rolling her eyes.

“Tom, Pony Head this is Marco,” she said, gesturing up to the boy. “Marco, these are my old friends, Tom and Pony Head,” she yelled up to him.

“Hi,” he called down to the two with a wave. But Tom and Pony Head didn't respond, glaring up at the boy, and he stopped waving, feeling suddenly awkward.

“Uh yeah, right,” Pony Head responded with a roll of her eyes, turning away from the boy and floating closer to Star. “So where exactly did you pick up the turd, anyway, girl?” Pony Head asked, in a loud whisper. Tom just continued to stare at the two with an angry frown, arms crossed, his cheek flames glowing bigger with every passing second.

“Marco's an orphan,” the blond explained to her friend. “We met...” Her cheeks turning bright pink as she remembered their first meeting, how he had spied on her from the tree. “... a while ago.”

“What are you guys talking about?” Marco asked cheerfully, yelling to draw their attention to him once again.

“Nothing,” Star quickly exclaimed, whipping back around to face the boy, hands behind her back, ignoring the suspicious stares of her friends burning into her skin.

“Oh, okay,” Marco replied, in his usual fashion, shooting her another adorable smile. “Sooo what are you guys doing?” he asked, innocently.

“Oh, umm-” Star's brain went blank as she tried to think up a liable excuse, turning to her old friends for support, but they were too busy glaring up at the boy to be of any help. She turned back to Marco hesitantly saying, “Just going to town for a bit.”

“Cool, can I come?!” Marco asked loudly, his eyes starting to shine with wonder.

“Shhhh,” Star and the others hissed, Star putting a finger to her lips. Marco looked between the three with a questioning gaze, feeling very confused by the strange reaction. Star took a deep breath, explaining to the startled boy, “We're trying not to let the others know about that.”

“Why?” Marco asked innocently.

“Because, um... because,” Star bit her lip, deep in thought. “We don't want to worry the others. They would needlessly get upset, so it's better if we don't tell them I'm sneaki- I mean, visiting other places for the night.” Star smiled nervously at Marco, who continued to just stare at her.

“So another words your sneaking out and don't want anyone to know,” Marco replied simply and Star's mouth dropped open that the boy managed to guess.

“Uh, yeah,” Star said in shock. “That's actually right.”

“He's smarter than he looks, actually,” Pony Head mumbled to Tom with an eye roll.

Star turned back to the two for a moment, giving them a look that said let-me-handle-this, before turning back to her hooded friend. “So then you understand that the others can't know I'm gone?”

Marco nodded. “Yep, I get it,” he replied. But the smile quickly faded from his face, replaced with a look of fear, his eyes widening. “But what if the others come looking for you, while your gone?”

“Why would they-” Star started, but Marco quickly interrupted.

“What if they insist on searching your room?” Marco continued, his mind spiraling out of control, his body practically shaking with worry. “What if they blame me for letting you go out alone?”

“Technically she's not alone,” Tom grumbled, arms still crossed and his eyes narrowing in anger.

“Okay, don't panic,” Marco shouted, more to himself then the others, who just watched him in shock and/or skepticism. “You go into town and I'll stay here and make sure no one comes in your room. You know what, just to be on the safe side I better go run and tell everyone in the castle that your in your room and that your not to be disturbed.” With that, Marco disappeared from view, heading off to put his plan into motion.

“Marco, wait!” Star called after him, trying to get his attention but he was already gone.

“So.” Star turned to see Tom and Pony Head looking at her blankly. “Let me guess,” Tom continued. “He has to come with us, doesn't he?”

Star chuckled nervously, as her old friends eyes narrowed in annoyance.

The four walked into town together, Tom and Pony in the lead looking angry, and Star and Marco following a little ways behind them. Star held Marco's hand, guiding him through the nearly empty streets, ignoring the tingling feeling she got from contact with his soft skin. Tom kept looking back at the two, feeling a growing sense of jealousy as he walked. He groaned in anger, looking to the floating unicorn head next to him, furiously asking, “Just who does that dork think he is?”

“I have no idea. I mean, we did just meet him,” Pony answered, also sounding annoyed.

“And what was she doing not telling us?” Tom continued, ignoring the flying horse head. “We're here best friends not that... that...”

“Turd,” Pony finished, eyes narrowing as she looked back at the boy, acting all lost and dazed as Star led him along. “Yeah, he's got to go. But don't worry your flame-retardant head, boy. I got a plan to make B-Fly remember who her real bestie is.”

“Yeah!” Tom quietly cheered, giving her a toothy grin. Tom stared at her for a moment before he added, “You mean both of us, right?”

“Huh?” Pony said, looking back to Tom in a daze. “Uh, yeah. Sure, sure.” She leaned closer to the boy, whispering, “ Anyways all we got to do is...”

“So how do you guys know each other?” Marco asked Star, who seemed distracted staring at the two in front of her with concern.

“Huh?” She swerved around to face Marco, ignoring the slight jolt of her heart as his brown eyes focused on her face. “Oh, me, Tom, and Pony go way back. Are families are all allies so we've been friends pretty much since we were kids.”

“You must be close then,” Marco admired. Star hesitated, saying nothing, averting her eyes so he couldn't see the pain behind them. Marco leaned in a little closer, trying to get a look at her face. “Star?” Marco asked in concern.

Star finally turned to him, a weak smile spread on her lips. “We use to be before...” she said, her voice barely a whisper, eyes dropping to the floor once again.

“Before what?” Marco said, leaning closer in, squeezing her hand tighter.

Tom nodded his head in admiration at the unicorn's plan, as Pony Head gave him a knowing look. “Yeah that sounds-” Tom's voice cut off as he saw Star and Marco holding hands, their faces just inches from touching. Pony also followed his gaze, spotting the two, before letting out an annoyed sigh. “Here we go,” she groaned in annoyance.

“Hey!!” Star and Marco jumped as Tom's angered voice echoed around the area, the hot-headed teen glaring angrily at the hooded boy, eyes glowing faintly red, the flames on his cheeks growing in size in reaction to his anger. Marco didn't seem affected though, cocking his head to the side, giving him a confused look. Tom's gaze jumped to Star. “Seriously?!” he huffed in anger, his voice practically shaking with mirth.

“What?” Star asked in confusion. Tom's eyes began darting back and forth between her face and her hand still intertwined with Marco's. He let out a deep sigh, his cheek flames snuffing out instantly. “Never mind.”

“Soooo,” Pony interrupted, floating over to the two pushing Marco out of the way. “How about you and me hit the town? Cause a ruckus? Break some rules? You know just like the good ol' days.”

“Wellll, that does sound like funnn...” Star hesitantly said, trying to ignore the awkward feeling she was getting as Pony closed in on her. “But what about Marco?” she asked, trying to peak around Pony and get a good look at the boy.

“Awww, he's fine,” Pony continued, quickly turning to the boy, who stood there in a hesitant daze. “Right Mango?”

“Actually it's Marco-”

“Yeah no one cares,” Pony interrupted, turning immediately back to Star. “Besides Tom will look after him, right T?”

“Oh, yeah,” Tom said, his voice sounding dark, his eyes narrowing with every syllable. “I'll definitely keep a close eye on Marco.”

There was a short moment of silence as Tom just glared at Marco, who looked around at the others awkwardly, unsure what to do or say. Finally, Star spoke up, stepping around Pony so she was now between her two old friends and her new one. “Uhh, no that's okay, Tom,” Star said, hands behind her back in an innocent gesture. “I'm sure Marco will be just fine on his own, right Marco?” She turned to the boy her eyes shining with cuteness, as they focused on him. Marco looked deep into Star's eyes, feeling the need to voice his growing concern. He didn't know the streets of Mewni very well yet, most of his navigation taking place in the castle, and he wasn't sure he was confident enough to keep up with the fast moving trio. But he could also tell that Star needed this, could tell by the desperation in her voice and eyes that she needed to stay with her old friends and that would never happen if she spent the whole trip fussing over him. He didn't want to be in the way and he hated the idea of being a hindrance to the girl who had done literally everything for him.

So he swallowed back his comment, saying, “Yeah, sure.”

“Aww yeah, come on B-Fly we got a lot of catching up to do!” Pony yelled, already flying off ahead of the group, Tom following quickly after, looking upset.

Star turned back to Marco asking, “You sure you'll be okay?”

Marco gave her a tight smile. “Of course, go on ahead. I'll be fine.”

Star stared at him a moment longer before hesitantly nodding her head, following after her friends. The second she turned away, Marco's smile dropped as he was forced to tag along after the trio, slowly making up the rear of their party.

The trio walked for a while, Star between her old friends, trying to look happy but unable to stop herself from looking back every couple of seconds to check on Marco, who seemed to be gaining more and more distance between them, having to run just to keep up. Pony caught her looking back and stopped, watching the girl's worried face. She looked to Tom, who also noticed Star's change in attitude and the two nodded, ready to put their plan in motion.

“Hey B-Fly,” Pony excitedly cheered, making the blond girl jump. “How about we have some real fun?!”

“What kind of fun?” Star asked, trying not to sound skeptical of her old, cooler friend.

“Well I'll bet with that new wand of yours you can do all kinds of things,” Pony said, a mischievous glint in her eyes. Star looked at her wand peeking out of her cloud purse, feeling her stomach twist with worry. Oh no, she thought, having a pretty good idea of where they were going with this.

She chuckled nervously, her hand instinctively hiding the purse from view. “Oh, no you don't want me to use my wand. It's totally boring. Why don't we go hit the Bounce Lounge like we use to,” she supplied, hoping Pony and Tom would take notice of her nervousness and take her lead for once.

They didn't. “Aww, come on, Star,” Tom pitched in now. “Don't be modest. I bet you could do just about anything with that wand.”

“Yeah,” Pony took over and Star got the feeling that this whole thing was planned out. “Like, I don't know, scaring that guy over there.” She gestured to a Mewman sitting on a bench, reading a newspaper.

Star looked between the expecting faces of her friends, skeptically. “You want me to use my wand to play pranks on people?”

“Uh, yeah,” Tom said. “It'll be hilarious.”

Star bit her lip. “I don't know...”

Pony Head groaned. “Come on, girl. He has it coming. I mean who reads a newspaper in the middle of the night, anyways?”

Star looked down at her wand, trying to decide what course to take.

“Look you wanna still be the super cool princess you used to be...” Pony said.

“Used to be,” Star whispered softly.

“...or do you want to be another one of those rubber stamp princesses we use to make fun of.”

Star's gaze dropped to the floor, feeling trapped between her two friends, both literally and figuratively. What was the problem? She reasoned with herself. It was just a few harmless pranks? It wasn't like she was hurting anyone? Right? She wasn't so sure though, something about it just felt wrong.

Tom could tell she was battling inside herself and decided it was best to give her a little more incentive. “You would have done it,” he said, crossing his arms and giving the princess a knowing look. “Y'know... before.”

Star's eyes widened in panic, her grip tightening around her wand. Was he right? Was that really true? Would Star have given in to their prank war, just because? She had no idea. In that moment, she had no way of knowing what she would have done before or if they were right. All she knew was she wasn't the princess she used to be and the only people who did know were right there beside her. Right now, she felt like a husk of her former self and she needed them to help her become the Star Butterfly she used to be and wished to be again. So she had to prove herself to them, no matter what.

So she took a deep breath, lifting her wand in front of her, magic beginning to gather. Pony and Tom smiled as a spider appeared behind the man, its sticky saliva dripping off its massive fangs and onto the crumpled newspaper. The man frowned, turning in his seat and screamed seeing the huge spider towering over him, jumping out of his chair and running for his life, passing the trio in a hurry. Tom and Pony laughed as the fake spider spell wore off, disappearing from view. Star lowered her wand, watching the laughing faces of her friends intently, ignoring the guilty feeling she had growing in the pit of her stomach.

“Man that was riot!” Tom gasped out, wiping a tear from his eye.

“What an idiot!” Pony added, before the two burst into laughter once again. Star gave a forced chuckle, her hands fidgeting with the hilt of her wand. Finally, the laughing fit died down, as the teens regained control of their breathing. “That was priceless,” Pony laughed. “You have to try that again, B-Fly!!”

Star gave her a thin smile. “O-Okay.”

Marco panted, finally seeing Star and her friends a little ways ahead of him. For a moment he had been afraid he had lost them, but at last he had finally managed to catch up. He was about to call out to them but just then a man ran by, screaming at the top of his lungs, “SPIDERRRR!!” Marco froze, watching him go, feeling a growing sense of concern for the poor Mewman, wondering what it was that had upset him so much.

Marco turned back to the others, about to call out and see if they knew what was wrong, but they were already headed off again to some location that was still unknown to the boy. The boy watched the for a second, unsure what to do, until Star turned to him giving him a reassuring smile, gesturing for him to come with. He smiled before running off after the three.

Star continued her pranking spree on the unsuspecting people of Mewni under the guidance and direction of her friends, who kept daring her to go bigger and bigger with her jinx. They started off simple, doing things like making mustaches appear on the Mewmans faces, cutting the invisible chains on the giant invisible goats that pulled all the wagons, making the blacksmith's hammer scream every time it hit up against something, turning the shop windows into mirrors that showed you your greatest nightmares, just the basics. But as they continued, Star became more and more comfortable with the wand trying out more difficult and crazy pranks, trying desperately to impress her friends, doing things like turning all the stairways she could find into large slip 'n slides, giving all the cats human faces, trapping the local mime inside an actual invisible box, and turning all the golf balls into sentient beings that started up their own little societies that became solely dependent on the outcome of the game, creating a rift between the different tribes, eventually leading to war. But Tom and Pony didn't seem to understand the last one, Star reasoning that that was because it was too complex for them to grasp.

And though Star seemed like she was smiling and laughing on the outside, inside Star felt a growing sense of guilt consuming her, feeling bad for tricking the people she was sworn to protect. But Tom and Pony continued to pressure her asking her to give more and more of something she was not comfortable with. She tried to reassure herself that all the spells would wear off within twenty-four hours but it did little to soothe her. She knew what she was doing was wrong and yet she didn't have the strength to tell her friends no.

The only comfort Star found was from Marco, turning back to the boy who seemed to be keeping a distance from the three, just watching from the side-lines giving Star her space so she could be with her friends. Everytime she did he would just give her a cute smile and a thumbs up, letting her know he was okay. And she would return the smile, before turning her attention back on her old friends, getting ready to perform another prank, feeling her cheeks warm as she felt Marco's stare on her back.

“How about you take this one, girl?” Pony said, after one such interaction.

Star felt her heart pound away in her chest as Tom and Pony looked at her intently, waiting for her reply. “Oh, ummm...” Star desperately racked her brain for an idea with no luck, her mind had gone completely blank at the worst possible time. She looked around her at the courtyard that surrounded them, hoping to find inspiration in the nearly empty streets. Finally her eyes came to rest on the possum statue that had been there for about as long as Star could remember. She wasn't sure how it had gotten there or what it was used for, but it was the only thing she had. “How about I move that statue over there?” she said hesitantly, pointing at the object with her wand.

Tom and Pony followed her gaze, silently staring at the statue and Star held her wand up to her face, trying to hide her nervousness behind it. The two troublemakers looked at each other and shrugged, or the closest thing a flying unicorn head could come to shrugging. “Eh, could be funny?”

Star breathed a mental sigh of relief as she turned all her attention on the marble object. She held her wand out, letting the pink magic gather, as she tried to think of the right spell to use. She nodded to herself as her brain drew the spell from the deep corners of her mind. She took a deep breath before reciting, “Levitato!” her wand instantly reacting, shooting out the pink energy and lifting the statue up into the air. She smiled at her success, looking behind her at Marco, who's eyes were wide with wonder just like they were the first day they met and she felt a pride growing in her chest. She looked back to the statue, only for her smile to fade as the statue was flung this way and that, her wand quickly losing control of the object as Star's attention was drawn elsewhere. Star tried to recover, gripping her wand tighter and trying to focus all her attention on landing the thing, but her inexperience made controlling it impossible, as it was flung around the courtyard, crashing into several walls and knocking over carts of tradeable goods. The few people still in the courtyard, watched the flying statue with horror, several ducking down to avoid getting hit. “Star!” Tom and Pony both screamed at the girl to do something. Star grunted as she pulled hard on the wand, trying to get it to respond and finally it did, the statue sent plummeting to the earth below, landing hard on its side with a loud crash. Somehow the statue survived but it was sent skidding across the cobbled streets.

For a moment, everyone remained frozen just staring at the statue in silence. Then a random person from the crowd screamed, “The statue lives! The end is upon us!” And with that, the courtyard exploded into a hectic chaos, everyone screaming and running for their lives, the courtyard somehow lighting itself on fire, as the people ran around willy-nilly, knocking anything over that got in their way.

“Wow that spiraled quickly,” Tom muttered, the others staring in shock and awe at the destruction of the scene in front of them, nodding their heads slowly in agreement.

“Run!” Pony screamed, floating off scene as quickly as possible.

“Good idea,” Tom agreed, Star and him following quickly after her, Star following a bit slower. She looking back at the disaster area she had left the street in, feeling guilt gnaw away at her insides. Then, suddenly, one of the crumpled walls the statue had slammed into caved, collapsing and crumbling to the ground, heading right for a creature covered head to toe in light blue hair, who stood frozen watching the chaotic scene blankly. Star came to a stop, feeling her heart do the same, about to yell and warn it about the impending danger quickly descending on its unsuspecting head.

“Look out!” Star turned to see Marco, with a determined look on his face, running at the creature, who turned to see the hooded boy quickly approaching it, simply blinking in shock. The boy hit it full-force knocking both of them out of the way of the crumbling building, the debris missing them by mere inches.

Marco slowly rose to his knees, looking down at the creature he had just saved, who just stared at him blankly. He could feel an awkward tension form as it's gaze rested on him. “Um, are you... okay?” The hairy creature said nothing, just blinking once. “Do you maybe want to stand?” No response, just another blink. “Okay I'm gonna get off so you can get up now?” The creature simply blinked again.

Marco stood, wiping the dust off his clothes as he suddenly heard someone from behind scream his name. He turned just as Star's arms wrapped around him, drawing him into another warm hug. The boy felt his cheeks grow hot with a blush, as Star deepened their hug, feeling the fast beating of her heart against his own. She pulled away, her eyes bright with worry, wet tears tinged on the edge of her eyes. “Are you alright?”

“Yeah,” Marco said shyly, trying to will away his blush, as Star's sky blue eyes focused on his face.

“What were you thinking?!” Star screamed, her voice tight with fear.

“I saw that thing falling and I just... reacted,” Marco replied with a shrug.

“You should be more careful,” Star said, letting out a soothing breath, feeling her heartbeat calm down as she slowly realized Marco was no longer in danger.

“Sorry,” Marco said, feeling bad for making Star worry so much. Star shook her head, wiping the tears from her eyes. The two looked over as the hairy creature from before, now standing, staring at them blankly, making both of them feel uncomfortable.

“We should probably get out of here before the Mewnian guards show up,” Star finally said, looking over to the courtyard and the chaos that still consumed it. Marco followed her gaze and went to nod, but he was quickly dragged away by Star, barely having enough time to shout to the hair creature who continued to watch them, “Nice meeting you!”

The creature watched them blankly as a small flame lit up on the right side of its fur.

Star and Marco caught up with the others on the outskirts of town, Tom and Pony looking on at the forest stretching before them. “Hey guys!” Star called to them and they turned, smiling to Star and then upon spotting Marco, switching to a glare. The boy shrunk a little under their gaze.

“Where were you, girl?” Pony asked, focusing her attention on Star once again. “We were staring to wonder if you were coming back.”

“Oh, umm... well,” Star started, feeling a blush on her cheeks, her and Marco not making eye contact with one another.

Tom groaned. “Never mind, just forget it.”

“Soooo what now?” Star asked hesitantly, hoping that they would call off the pranks so she could go home.

“Well obviously are pranks are over,” Pony said matter-of-factly. Star mentally sighed. “So we'll just have to do something even more funnnn,” the unicorn head continued making her voice sound mysterious and Star felt her heart stop again. Oh no. What now?

“Like what?” Marco asked curiously and Pony turned to him with a smug look.

“Well, Tom here was telling me all about this rumor that's been going around town,” Pony explained, turning to her partner in crime, who happily took over the story.

“Well I hear that there is this cave just on the outskirts of town,” Tom said, mysteriously. “And the entrance is sealed with magic so no one knows what's inside.”

“But we know how to find out,” Pony said, giving Star a knowing look.

Star mentally cringed, but tried to keep her face emotionless. “I don't know guys. It's getting kinda late, don't you think we should head back.”

Pony scoffed. “Come on, girl. Don't tell me your scared of a little cave.”

“O-Of course not,” Star quickly exclaimed, sounding defensive.

“Then you won't mind going, right?” Tom said, a hinting edge to his tone, raising an eyebrow at the girl.

Star sighed, before giving them a forced smile. “Right,” she whispered not looking either of them in the eyes.

“So where is the cave?” Marco asked, joining in on the conversation, becoming more and more curious about the mysterious legend.

“In there,” Pony simply replied, gesturing with her head to the woods behind her.

Star and Marco both simultaneously looked up to the top of the tall trees that towered over the group, just as a flash of lightening lit up the night sky, followed by a thunderous boom, making the whole forest look dark and foreboding. The two's eyes widened and they gulped as one, Marco taking an uncomfortable step back.

“Um, that doesn't look safe,” Marco pointed out, his voice shaking slightly.

“Well it is the Forest of Certain Death,” Tom replied, hiding an evil grin.

“That sounds even less safe,” Marco added, his voice a squeak.

“Pff, don't worry Mango,” Pony said, bumping the boy lightly in the shoulder. “The names super misleading.”

“Yeah, it's really only likely you'll die,” Tom tauntingly replied. “Not certain.”

“Tom!” Star scolded the boy and he shrugged.

“What?” he asked, an innocent smile on his face.

Star's eyes narrowed on the boy as she turned to Marco. “Don't worry, Marco. There just trying to scare you.”

“So there is no danger in there,” Marco asked Star, fear still shining in his eyes.

“Uhhhhh,” Star said, her eyes darting around nervously. “You know what, let's just all go home,” Star quickly added, chuckling nervously, already beginning to push the boy away from the area. “I mean who needs to explore some dumb cave anyways? Am I right?”

But Pony flew in front of their path, stopping them in their tracks. “Oh come on, girl. You can't back out now just because of a few monster sightings.”

Marco felt his heart drop. “Monster sightings!” he screamed in terror.

Star quickly added. “No, no, Marco. It's okay,” she tried to comfort the panicked boy. “No one's seen monsters in there for years. None of them ever wander this close to Butterfly Castle.”

But Star's comforting words fell on deaf ears as Marco looked into the dark woods, uncertainty. He could feel a dark tension coming from within, his heart hammering away in his chest. His breathing became shallow and weak, as the woods felt like were closing in around him. He could hear Toffee's voice echoing in his head, words of disapprovement and wrath. He felt as if a million, dark eyes were watching from within, judging him, blaming him for running away. His thoughts quickly began to spiral out of control. He couldn't do this. He had to escape, he needed to get away, he was going to-

“Marco.” Somehow, Star voice managed to be heard over Marco's panicked thoughts, her soft tone shattering his spiraling train of thoughts and bringing him back to reality. She put a comforting hand on his shoulder, softly saying, “You okay?”

Marco took a deep, shaky breath, trying to relax his frazzled nerves. He nodded, feeling his racing heart slow, as Star's wide, blue eyes focused on his face. “Yeah,” he softly whispered. “I just... I don't think I can go with you,” Marco's voice shook a little on the last word and Star gave him a sympathetic look.

“And that's okay,” Star comforted. “I don't want you to do anything your not comfortable with.” Their was an awkward pause as Star looked over to Tom and Pony Head now waited at the entrance to the woods, having moved there when the boy had started his panic attack, Star telling them to give him some space and let her handle this, to which the two had reluctantly replied, not liking the idea of leaving her alone with the newcomer. They stood there (or floated there) just staring at the two teens impatiently a short distance away, waiting for Star to hurry up and comfort the boy, the girl feeling their disapproving stare digging in to her skin, making her feel uncomfortable.

Star took a deep breath, before turning back to the boy. “If you want, I can stay with you,” she offered, a light smile on her face. Marco studied the girl for a moment. He knew she was being honest. That if he wished it she would leave the other two behind and dedicate the rest of the night to him. He knew all he had to do was say the word and she would respond and for a moment he was tempted. But he couldn't. He didn't want to be the reason Star abandoned her two oldest friends just so she could look after him because he was too big of a baby to go into some dark woods at night. He just couldn't do it, not to Star, the girl who had given up so much in the name of others happiness. She deserved a little of her own.

And so instead he smiled and said, “No, that's okay. Go. I'll just head back to the castle.”

Star seemed surprised by his answer, asking, “Are you sure?”

“Yeah, of course. I'm kinda tired anyways,” he replied, the smile never leaving his lips.

Star looked at him for a moment longer, her bright eyes focusing on his face and he held back a blush. “Okay,” she hesitantly responded. Before quickly adding, “Tomorrow we'll hang out together, all day. Just the two of us.”

Marco nodded. “Sounds good.”

And with that Star began walking over to her old friends. Tom and Pony Head, seeing the girl leaving her friend behind, shared a smile, knowing they had won. Star was still theirs. And with that, they both quickly entered the dark woods together, trusting that the girl would follow. And she did. But she hesitated just before entering, turning back to the boy, still worried he was upset. He gave her a warm smile, letting her know that all was okay with him and she returned the gesture with a smile of her own.
