Honest Opinion - Andromeda Shun

Yeah, why do I even bother telling you he’s not called Shun here. Straight up Andromeda and that’s it. 

(Hades not taken into consideration, I need to re-watch it before talking)

Overall score (character, not looks) Classic: 10/10 Legend of Sanctuary: 10/10

First thing first, I might be a little bit biased. Shun has always been my favorite character, since the very first time I watched Saint Seiya as an insufferable kid, so of course I have nothing bad to say about him. 

But let’s start with the obvious, aka, the fact everyone loves to see Shun as this girly little boy that’s scared of everything.  Have you seen Shun? Have you seen his character? Hell, have you realized what kind of personality Shun has? He’s not a childish Saint who only relies on his brother to fight, for heaven’s sake!

If anything, Shun if probably the strongest Bronze Saint of the series, alongside his brother. His master certainly didn’t hesitate in telling us Shun almost awakened his Seventh Sense as soon as he gained the Cloth.  And you tell me he’s a scaredy cat? Yeah, I don’t think so. 

He’s kind, he’s very compassionate and prefers peace to war, but that doesn’t mean he’s not a good fighter or weak or whatever bullshit roams around the internet.  Shun tries to avoid fighting by reasoning with his enemies, he tries to befriend them instead of being a ruthless killer, and when he doesn’t succeed... have you ever seen Shun giving up a fight just because he’s a gentle soul? Because in the classic, I only remember him refusing to fight against his brother, at the beginning of the series. 

Every other instance, even if reluctantly, he fought and won more times than people gave him credit for.  Hell, he’s capable of unleashing a power so great it literally becomes impossibile to control, he’s so damn powerful Pisces Aphrodite, the cruelest Gold Saint of the Sanctuary, and Siren Sorrento were utterly terrified of him.  And don’t tell me you don’t remember the way he faced that damn pyromaniac Saint before the whole Sanctuary Arc. 

He has a big loving heart, he cares about his friends and family, to the point of sacrificing himself for the sake of them.  That’s not the act of a coward person, let me tell you that much. Giving up your life requires a hell lot of courage and determination, and he sure has them.  I think the scene in the Libra Temple is the perfect example of this side of his personality, and I’m talking canonically, not taking into consideration all the shipping and whatnot that it created.  He was damn ready to sacrifice himself for Hyoga, and did so without thinking back. 

But, it’s not all about sacrifice. And we can see this during the altercation he had with his former training companions, Leda (or Reda? I don’t know how you spell it) and Spica.  Shun could have easily given up and let them kill him, let them fulfill the destiny of the Andromeda Saint, but he said “screw this” and fought back. And that’s his determination coming through. Aided by his own memories and mental strength, not by someone else interfering and helping him. 

I swear, every single piece of fanwork (fanart, fanfiction, posts and whatever) depicts Shun as a helpless Mary Sue looking for someone to help him. And I hate it.  Sure, he did have moments in which he called upon his brother and friends, but they did as well, so what gives?

I know his character analysis, and subsequently my opinion, could go even further than this, given his role in Hades, but this should be more than enough.  Shun is not one of my favorites for nothing, after all. 

Legend of Santuary kind of ruined him.  Not because his movie counterpart was bad, but because he didn’t have an opportunity to show his potential.  While every other Saint got to show their power, he (and Ikki, really) didn’t. Shun showed his true power during the fight against Aphrodite, and they got rid of Aphrodite way too soon.  Plus, the scene in the Libra Temple was completely scrapped as well, so Shun didn’t have a tiny bit of chance. 

Still gets my full approval, though. I loved him.
