I just finished leaving a 2,000 word essay on your latest 666 but I had to just say it here too. Your MIND!

Something that didn’t end up fitting into the comment of an already absurd length is that I love how much this series has become a profound character study on how Alastor becomes closer to and emotionally invested in a new friend. I didn’t expect it, but this concept has grabbed me by the neck and won’t let go.

The essays you and some other people leave in my inbox in reponse to my fics completely and unabashedly make my entire day, I hope you know. Some people have pointed out how neat it is to blend smut fics with so much character and relationship study, and I really cannot overemphasize how gratifying it is when people take that and fucking run with it! I genuinely ADORE it when people take the time to pick apart all the stuff I've written - it makes me feel like I've not just succeeded at writing the thing I meant to, but also just really happy to share the things I'm excited about with regards to these characters!! Especially when it's things like, as you said, balancing an exploration of deep and genuine feelings from a character who does not actually do romance, or other fun and unrepentantly queer shit I enjoy writing about.

Anyway, that is all to say, thank you VERY much for your comments! I really appreciate them!

1. favourite place in your country? That’s a really tough one. I would very much like to move to Vancouver (or somewhere around there) but if we’re talking where do I like to go to just exist, there are a couple of lakes in town and I like to just like on the beach and relax

6. most hated song in your native language? My native language is English and for the other question I tried to think of a Canadian song, but I actually don’t know. 

14. do you enjoy your country’s cinema and/or TV? Canadian movies fall into 2 categories as far as I am concerned: 1. surprisingly good and 2. so bad it passes ‘so bad it’s good’ and just goes right back to bad again. I love Canadian TV. I grew up watching Due South and only discovered Schitt’s Creek is Canadian earlier this year (I am behind the times) and they are two of my favourite shows. We do comedy well imo.

(Note that you don't have to answer to any questions that make you uncomfortable!)

Are you in love atm? Romantically, sure am. I’ve told my husband before that every “I love you” I say to him counts for at least half a dozen times I’ve thought it. He’s great. We’re going on about 16 years together (12 married) and I still get those happy little butterflies thinking about him. But I feel I should mention non romantic love because, gosh, there are some people I love quite dearly who have made my life a lot better.

Where do you live? Indiana, USA

How old are you? 34, going on 35 in July

What are your tips to work through art block? Prompts! I find prompts help to get me out of my usual headspace and so spark creativity when I might not be able to find it in myself.

Do you have a favorite meal? Man, it’s so hard for me to pick favorite foods. I love food, lol. I think, if pressed, I’d say pizza is hard to beat. It’s a whole meal in one food which is pretty rad. Plus, there are so many different styles and toppings that you can have a pizza for any occasion. 

What is your favorite movie? Okay, so, not just food. Picking a favorite anything is hard hahaha. I think... probably... I’d go with LotR: The Return of the King.

 Do you dream? Do you remember them? Would you tell us about one of your favorites if you have one? I do and I do, usually. I’m a lucid dreamer and dreaming tends to be... weird for me. Like, idk if this is the case for anyone else, but I have a dream universe. It isn’t the place I *always* go in dreams, but it’s a frequent backdrop. It has updated as I’ve gotten older but includes a certain house that is my home, a neighborhood including various recurring houses and local shops. I also have a dream version of a mall, movie theater, grade school, high school, and university. It’s a whole damn town near enough lol, and when I’m there I tend to be most likely to realize I’m dreaming and switch things up. One of my favorites was when I was Captain Marvel. Despite lucid dreaming, I can never get myself to fly. I know flying dreams are common but prior to this dream, the best I could ever manage was to jump really far. But something about being Captain Marvel was enough to make me be able to believe I could fly, which is rad and I feel says something. I don’t remember much about the dream, otherwise, except for rescuing various ladies and making them my sidekicks.

I'm in a bit of a trouble: one if my family members absolutely wants to see me "create my own family" (partner + children), they think it's the goal of everyone's life and I feel like I have to come out if I want for them to stop repeating that to me again and again. The problem is I don't think they would take the news really well, they took psychology classes and now think they know more than anybody else. Moreover, they already think I have some sort of trauma in addition to my

(2/2) mental illness so I worry they would take my aroaceness as another sign I'm traumatized and want to "heal" me somehow... I thought about maybe giving them links to informational websites, but I'm also terrified of coming out :( do you have any advice? thank you.

One of my favorite new phrases that I’ve come across thanks to Captain Awkward is “reasons are for reasonable people”.

Your family member is not a reasonable person. They have very unreasonable beliefs, and they are expressing them in an unreasonable way.

Your fears are incredibly founded. You absolutely don’t have to force yourself to come out to someone unsafe when there is absolutely no guarantee this will make them see reason. Because they are not a reasonable person, and they are not looking to understand you better. They are an unreasonable person getting some sick sense of satisfaction over judging people in this way and harassing them over these conservative beliefs.

This is not about you proving yourself to this family member. This is not about getting this family member to see reason (because if they don’t want to, they absolutely won’t, no matter how reasonable you are). This is about boundaries.

If you want to come out, that is great and fine, but you are going to need to work on setting and enforcing boundaries whether you come out or you stay closeted. That is how you handle this relative.

You are now a brick wall to this relative. Your goal is to stop hearing about how they want you to create a family. You’re going to work towards that goal by shutting them down anytime they bring up this subject.

You start by defining your boundary in a simple, concise, clear manner. The next time family member makes one of these comments, you get stern and you respond “I’m going to live my life the way I want. Whatever happens will happen. I am tired of hearing about how you think I should live my life. I no longer want to discuss this at all. I would like to have a good time with you. So, how about [that Fiona Apple album]? I found it [opinion]. Have you seen it? What did you think?”

If family member doesn’t drop it and tries to push it, you walk away. You hang up the phone. You put in headphones. You do not engage any further. You will talk to them the next time you call/see them or in another hour or so when you’ve both cooled off.

Every. single. time. family member tries bringing this up, you become a brick wall. You can give one reminder while you get comfortable setting this boundary. “I said I didn’t want to talk about that. [Subject change].” or even just “*blank stare* SOOOO, anyway, [subject change]”. If family member still keeps pushing it and you’ve gone through this several times, stop giving them a chance to continue on with you with the subject change. Tell them “we’re not doing this” and hang up/walk away.

This will be hard to do. Unreasonable people do not like boundaries. It will be hard on you to enforce. You just want to be a good person and give everyone a chance. You want to believe the best in family member. Setting this boundary will feel mean to you even though it is in no way mean. You will slip up. You will once again try to reason with and explain to family member. It’s okay. You’re human, and you’re just trying to be understanding and accommodating. You will pick yourself up and re-set the boundary and uphold it more strongly  next time.

If you come out, it should be because you genuinely want to come out. You do not have to come out before you’re ready just to try and prove your humanity to someone or show that your choices are worthy of respect. Your family member is being assuming and judgemental and is wrong by demanding everyone needs a partner and children. No matter your sexuality, you have a right to determine what you want out of life for yourself, and you definitely have a right to determine that without being harassed or pressured into what someone else wants for you.

The issue isn’t that family member doesn’t understand this - it’s that they don’t respect it.

When and if you are ready to come out, I have various bits of advice in my coming out tag and would be happy to answer any other or more specific question you have about coming out in your situation. =)
