Modern AU — Jin Renshu

GENERAL INFORMATION

NAME: Jin Renshu (金仁书)

AGE: Thirty-three (Born June 22nd, 1991)

BORN IN: Sha Tin, Hong Kong

CURRENT RESIDENCE: He has a home in Deep Water Bay, Hong Kong and another in London, England.

OCCUPATION: Professional Taekwondo fighter (Olympic champion)

ETHNICITY: Asian (Chinese/Singaporean on his father's side, Chinese/English on his mother's side)

BACKGROUND

Ren is the eldest of two sons, and from an early age, he displayed a great interest in martial arts. He began taking Taekwondo, Muay Thai, and Kung Fu classes in his childhood.

He was sent to Vermont for his high school years but Ren decided to drop out in 10th grade to fully devote his time to his training, returning to Hong Kong. His teachers had always seen great potential in him to become an Olympic athlete and Ren wanted nothing more than to compete against the best in the world.

He first qualified for the Olympics in London in 2012 when he was seventeen. He didn't earn any medals then but was seen as a promising up-and-comer. It was an unforgettable experience to be able to compete against the very best in Taekwondo and it definitely lit a fire in him to keep pushing his limits.

For the Olympics in Rio in 2016, he earned a silver medal. In Tokyo 2020 he earned his first golden medal, and his second golden one just a few weeks ago in Paris 2024.

Ren is likely to retire soon from the competitive world, as he's at the height of his career and it's best to bow out now. He's in the early stages of setting up his own martial arts academy, helping train the younger generations, especially those who don't have the economic means to pursue their dreams.

RELATIONSHIP HISTORY

He dated and slept around for some time in his earlier years. He's been in a happy relationship with Elia Martell for about a year now, his first committed relationship in a long time. The two of them met when Elia's brand worked in collaboration with the Olympics to provide opportunities for young POC athletes.

"babe," elia's voice was panicked, and she grabbed renshu's hand in her own. her other hand was at her earlobe, now bare, a stark contrast to the pear-shaped diamond that glittered in the other one. "my earring is gone," she announced, dramatically. in the list of things that mattered, elia's lost earring was low on the list, but it was clear that to her, it was the most important thing in the world.

"do you remember if i was wearing it when i came in?" she took out the other earring, wordlessly handing it to him to keep safe. "here, i don't have pockets. will you help me look? if i had it when we got here, it's got to be somewhere in here."

Hanwei Maru Renshu Katana

The Maru Renshu by Hanwei is a sword designed entirely with practical and repetitive cutting practice in mind. Its cost has been made more economical by using simpler, but durable materials for the hilt fittings while keeping the quality of the blade and its tempering fully intact and on par with more expensive 5160 steel cutting swords from Hanwei. This all goes together to create a sword that you can reliably cut and practice with and do so affordably whilst keeping your more premium katana reserved for special occasion.

The blade is through-hardened 5160 high carbon steel. This type of steel, paired with mono-tempering, creates a blade that is a durable cutter. Unlike a differentially-hardened sword this kind of blade is much less likely to take a bend if a poor cut is made – ideal for the cutting beginner or someone who wants a no-frills practical cutting sword. The Maru Renshu has a long bo-hi groove intended to reduce the weight of the sword along its thickest point whilst sacrificing little durability. This groove creates a more audible whoosh when the sword strikes – the variable sound of this Tachikaze sword wind can be used as a tell on the angle of cut to trained ears.

The tsuba, fuchi and kashira hilt fittings are iron and the habaki and seppa are brass. The wooden tsuka grip is paneled with faux rayskin and overlaid with knotted black suede leather tsuka-ito cord. A pair of antiqued brass menuki are wrapped within the folds of the ito. The saya scabbard is black lacquered wood with horn koiguchi and kojiri fittings. It is paired with a red sageo cord and left unknotted so that it is ready for practical wear and use.

unrest that plagues the north during their absence is undeniable in light of her brother making his preparations to depart. shes made a habit of being an invisible ear to some of his more confidential conversations and this time bears little difference. while there is worry deep within her for the kingdom she hails from, worries of missing an opportunity she's waited for since the knight had made his appearance in the reach takes precedence in this moment. as hard as her brother searches for the remaining perpetrators in the death of yanlin and her children, he can only accomplish so much with a hold to maintain. it's time for vengeance of her own, and that starts with the man she finds within the halls of the northern apartments.

"ser renshu," moves quickly to catch up with him, breath of relief slipping from an upturned mouth. "apologies for the interruption, but i wondered if i might share a word with you. i have a matter that is best discussed with someone of your skillset."

sometimes gossip can be left at just that. a white lie here, an overexaggeration there. all of which the lady chooses to brush off as they pass her by until word of a new danger has its turn on the rumor mill. she pays close attention to the details of what's been transpiring at the depths of the mines nestled between the last hearth and the last river. a powder with the strength of many men, but weakening to the mind and there are few of her own men mentioned as examples of the strange substance.

the thought places even more worry on a racing mind. how could she rebuild if the people that held her up couldn't function? or if they could, at a pace she couldn't control? she needs complacency as much as brute strength if she's to keep herself comfortable in her positions and so she begins research of her own. starting with the dispatch of two men who'd accompanied her to pay a visit to the residents who represent her family.

"my lady," a voice she's just sent away resounds again and she can feel her genetic anger bubbling at the surface. "a member of the kingsguard requests audience with you." boiling nerves can begin to simmer knowing he's not so absentminded to forgot orders with such haste. it's replaced by curiosity for the unannounced audience and she gives an affirming nod to allow the knight in.
