I've placed items in this fridge in my neighborhood, grateful that it is available for those in need of food. I came across a group pf adults with children filling the fridge, and I asked one of them, who was taking pictures about her organization. Hannah and the organization as stated on her tee-shirt is "Repair the World" She told me a little about the organization, but I also looked it up. Here is what I found: "Repair the World Brooklyn mobilizes Jews and their communities to take action to meet local needs across Brooklyn, grounding our service in reflection, education, and Jewish values. " #teeshirttales MY Stranger 35/100 .
When you hear the phrase “Bad Ass, what do you think of. For me it’s her. If someone is born and or works to have a huge body and or that person arms themselves with lots of weapons; that seems like a gravel armor over the actual person of who they are. But when a small Jewish woman can stand up against the world armed with pure strength of character and intellect and make an actual change in the world for the better... that’s a bad ass. My your memory forever be a blessing. May your memory forever be a motivation. May your memory forever lead the charge of tikkun olam. #ruthbaderginsburg #tikkunolam #repairtheworld https://www.instagram.com/p/CFXZMCuDGpB/?igshid=17ue8372jvr4d
As a woman + mother we tend to put our needs on the back burner + ignore pain or discomfort but after hearing about the background + strain info I was in! Thank you to Wesley @kworks.oc for sharing in-debt knowledge of terpenes + genetics, Convinced me to invest in my wellness & this amazing 1:1 tincture by @tikun.ca Perfect for those days when u just gotta keep going but need comforting relief + uplifting boost.
I would love to get the phrase #TikkunOlam tattooed on me. Although I am not Jewish I remember last year learning about this and it is something that I think of everyday. For me, it really just tied together what I'm supposed to do in this life. The piece of the world that God or the Universe has left for me to complete. The day I heard it, changed my life #bethechange #BeTheGood #repairtheworld #LoveThyNeighbor #volunteer #giveback #mybrotherskeeper https://www.instagram.com/p/BvutAWPFZ4m/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1wjilqa0mhoo0
I finally began removing a 10'x10' section of what appears to be rubber from a large tire fire in my yard. It surrounds my banana trees and makes the ground impermeable to nutrients and water. If you can imagine what it's like taking a pick axe to a bouncy rubbery mess, then double the ridiculousness level in your head. What to do with the remnants now? #repairtheworld #MindYourDirt #jackasses #tirefire #flubber #toxic (at San Diego, California)

Well it’s mid-day on a Sunday Afternoon as I create this post. Always a great time for writing and reflecting. Last week this time, Sunday, August 20th, I led a walking tour of my Crown Heights community accompanied by my fellow advisory board member Yasmin Schwartz and members the 2017-2018 NYC Repair the World Fellows.
Repair the World was founded in 2009 to make meaningful service a defining element of American Jewish life. Repair mobilizes tens of thousands of young Jews to volunteer in tackling pressing local needs each year, and Repair equips communities and partners to do the same.
Pictured here are Brian, Michele, Yasmin, Hazel Hurley of 1100 Bergen Street Community Garden, yours truly and Emma. Click here to learn from Rachel Holliday Smith on how the garden was saved from development.
The fellows were open to learning, sharing as new neighbors and ready to join in making a difference. Click here to learn about all of them. Stop by to say hello during the annual For the Love of Crown Heights Event on September 14th. Register here! The event will be held at Repair the World headquarters located at 808 Nostrand. It’s an open house celebration of Crown Heights for all those who love/want to learn about the neighborhood!
Repair the World’s signature program, Repair the World Communities, engages young adults in social change around education and food justice in neighborhoods in Baltimore, Detroit, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and New York City. In most communities, a City Director supports a cohort of fellows (ages 21-26) who make a year-long service commitment to Repair the World. During this year, Repair’s fellows work closely with local nonprofits to create authentic and impactful volunteering and education opportunities—and they use peer-to-peer outreach and recruitment to engage thousands of other young adults in volunteering and learning.
Another great Sunday of Service. Pictured with 2015-2016 fellows in Prospect Park for Brooklyn Community Service, BCS Step Challenge. Click here for their next event.
The fellows represent diverse states across the U.S. They each have some experience in education and food justice which deepens as they serve. You’re welcome to volunteer on a local project with a community partner anytime. Click here!
There will even be opportunities to attend and experience Shabbat dinners this year as well. The MLK one is not to be missed! A Shabbat dinner usually occurs at sundown on a Friday night. Customary prayers or blessings are said aloud, there’s a washing of your hands, sharing of the bread and drinking of the wine.
My first Shabbat dinner was in 2015. The Challah bread and wine are set nicely in the pic right? Well the meal that came after was excellent. The evening was a national service Shabbat hosted by Repair the World at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum. Repair the World usually has table questions to assist in conversing and I was enlightened.
I was not only in attendance but a table host and co-led my fellow national service members to share gratitude, intention and affirmations related to the evening and service.
Growing up in Crown Heights, I never had a Jewish friend or been invited to such an event. Yet Repair welcomed me. Service united us. The members of my table were very open and honest in sharing answers to my questions and I shared as well. It bought healing to me. I gained understanding. I’ve also had opportunities to meet more members of the Jewish faith in my neighborhood through service. This is beloved community.
At Crown Inn fellows and advisory board members shared tour experiences.
As you go along this week accept the opportunity to meet someone new. Maybe it’ll be at a volunteer project. Perhaps with someone of another faith or someone that looks different than you. Most of all be sure it’s someone in which you can share and receive something new.
Want to engage your peers in addressing social justice issues through service while building a strong professional network and living in a dynamic city?
Then apply now for the Repair the World Fellowship or recommend someone you know.
The Repair the World Fellowship is a unique 11 month opportunity for talented individuals ages 21 to 26 to recruit and engage the Jewish community to address social justice issues through meaningful service. Fellows will recruit, train, and serve alongside volunteers to bring about real community change around education justice and food justice.
Repair the World will provide training, a living stipend, communal housing, and other perks. Fellowship placement cities include Detroit, New York City, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.
Repair also seeks to build a community in which all people, including Jews/non jews of color, individuals with disabilities, from working-class backgrounds, and those who are transgender and gender non-conforming, find a supportive environment that is focused on their leadership.
Our Next Deadlines are March 31st and May 31st.
If you have questions or want to know more, reach out to Repair's Program Manager- Sam Kuttner at [email protected].
Recently we worked with @veganarc (one of our first eco-conscious customers) to freshen up their tshirt design, resize it for better viewing, AND they trusted us to choose the ink and printing technique on the fly... Check out the results!!! The ink is ELT (extremely low temperature) ink from One Stroke Inks. Their eco-conscious garment choices are wise! Seen here is an awesome hoodie from the Repair The World line at @lurapparel Thank you ARC for trusting us to create beautiful garments for you!! #inkredibleimage #EcoFriendly #ScreenPrinting #CustomApparel #onestrokeinks #repairtheworld #lurapparel #sustainable #hoodie #hoodies #RecycledPlastic #recycledplasticbottles #ecofriendlyapparel #sustainablefashion #sustainableapparel #whomadeyourclothes #vegan #ecoconscious #eastalabama (at Inkredible Image)
For Tu B'Shvat, the Jewish New Year of the Trees, Repair the World had a Seeds, Snacks, and Six Packs event that included helping fill Truelove Seeds packets and cleaning seeds while hearing seed stories and about our work towards food justice. Thanks everyone who came and helped! On my way home, I stopped in Mariposa Food Coop and saw they put their seed rack up today, loaded with Truelove Seeds! I’m so grateful to the people, organizations, and businesses of West and Southwest Philly for all the love, support, and collaborations. #tubshvat #repairtheworld #mariposafoodcoop #trueloveseeds #seedkeeping #seedstories #foodjustice

Tikkun Olam, a Hebrew command to repair the world, perform social justice, be the change you want to see in the world, bring the kingdom, and live the life God intended.
#TikkunOlam a little while ago I came across these words and some dialogue about it. It made such an impact on me that I made sure to etch these words into my soul. Although I am not Jewish, I can appreciate wisdom in any form it manifests. These past few days have tested our hearts and our souls and shaken us to the very core. Once more our brothers and sisters are hurting. It doesn't matter what race or religion we are, the one thing I do believe is that we are all connected and what affects and hurts one affects and hurts all. This hatred is senseless and has no place in modern times. But as I understand from this, I am here now, being shown these things so I can decide to go forward and repair. We should all go forward and fix what is broken as it is our calling, especially now. Let us not grow weary, but rather be fueled by love and unity. Love and Justice will win. #BeTheGood #RepairTheWorld #wisdom #unity #Pittsburghstrong #humanity https://www.instagram.com/p/Bpfx2RzFBSc/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1bb3yjhh8afzk
