Since 1978, Bow & Arrow Press has resided in a tiny corner of the Adams House, one of a dozen residential Houses devoted to Harvard undergraduate students. It is located in a building at the intersection of Bow and Arrow Streets, which its name originated. For 45 years, Bow & Arrow Press welcomed everybody in the community--students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the Adams House residents--and taught the art of letterpress to anybody who wanted to learn largely free of charge.
This Monday, the movers came and packed the contents of the studio, including the vintage presses and type cases, for storage while the Adams House renewal project takes place. The renewal plan had included the Bow & Arrow Press until April 16th, when Adams House’s faculty deans informed the community that the studio would not move back into their space after renovations are completed in 2025.
For 45 years, the Bow & Arrow Press has been a true community press. Over the years, thousands came to learn to typeset, get their fingers inky, and joyously run the century old letterpress. The creator of this artist’s book, scholar Johanna Drucker, used the press while she was a Harvard Mellon Faculty Fellow in the Department of Fine Arts. Drucker produced the letterpress edition of “The Word Made Flesh” in the winter of 1988-1989 with the assistance and support of James Barondess and Gino Lee, founders of the Bow & Arrow Press. Last Wednesday, Barondess (A.B.’79, Ph.D. ’93) came to the last Open Press Night and shared the early history of the press with the many younger generation printers who attended the event.
Poet Seamus Heaney also became familiar with the Bow & Arrow during his Harvard years, and theater director Peter Sellars was among the first students to get their hands on the press.
You can read more about the Bow & Arrow Press in an article, “The Eviction of the Bow & Arrow Press” written by Craig Lambert on Harvard Magazine.
The word made flesh Drucker, Johanna, 1952- New York, NY : Granary Books, c1996. "This is a facsimile reprint of copy #50 of the original letterpress edition"--Colophon. "The Druckwerk edition was produced in winter 1988-89 at the Bow and Arrow Press"-- HOLLIS number: 990072967770203941

Below, you’ll find the letter/email I sent to all my elected representatives. I only got one response (see: pictures at the end) from Senator Dick Durbin the day before he publicly called for a ceasefire in Palestine. His response is very clearly a stock-response, which is very common in this field. Because his response has little to do with what I discussed in my letter, so much of it amounts to a dismissal of my concerns and requests.
I-- like 80% of democrats-- support an immediate ceasefire in Palestine. I am pleading that you actually listen to your constituents and do something to stop the tragedy. We, the people, have easy demands:
1.) Immediate Deescalation
Call for an immediate ceasefire.
Protection of civilians and establishing safe zones in the Gaza Strip.
2.) Entry of Humanitarian Assistance
Safe passage of humanitarian aid and medical supplies from Egypt through the Rafah crossing. The international community must safeguard this.
Protection of safe, secure, and timely delivery of humanitarian assistance to the affected population inside the Gaza Strip.
Resuming access to water and electricity as well as fuel for medical facilities in the Gaza Strip.
Resuming communication with the people, UN & Red Cross aid workers, and press in Gaza.
3.) A one-state solution that ends Israel's apartheid
Admit that Palestinians live under a one-state reality and Israel is a settler-colonial nation.
Recognize that Palestine has sovereignty, Palestinians deserve self-determination, and the land is currently under occupation.
Merge Israel, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip into one single democratic country under a parliamentary government with a representative multi-party system.
Make all Palestinians and Israelis equal citizens of one nation. Palestinians must be granted full political and legal rights.
Support fundamental constitutional reform in Israel-Palestine that incorporates significant group rights. The only way to end violence in a deeply divided nation is a mega-constitutional transformation.
Abandon support for Zionism and organize the country on secular, pluralistic grounds rather than ethno-religious grounds.
Dismantle Israel's walls, segregating Palestinians from each other and their land, putting an end to Israel's "open-air prison" and segregation
Stop the forceful eviction of Palestinians from their home and support and encourage the right of return for millions of Palestinian refugees around the world.
Admit that Israel is a failed experiment. The state has critically failed to provide for and protect Jewish people. It has also failed to be a place free of persecution.
Admit the "war on terror' has been a failure and that America's aggressive military strategies and funding have increased terrorism and extremism around the world. Then, find new statecraft strategies.
A commitment to Israel is INCOMPATIBLE with a commitment to the humanitarian needs of the innocent people of Gaza. Some 50% of homes have been destroyed or critically damaged by Israel's carpet bombing campaign. Israel's indiscriminate bombing has also led to the destruction or critical damage of most of Gaza's sanitization facilities, sewage facilities, and water infrastructure, leaving Gazans without clean water. One million Palestinians have been displaced, over 7,000 have been killed, and over 18,000 have been wounded. The majority of the victims are women and children (about 50% of the strip are minors). Over 50 entire Palestinian family lineages have been wiped from the Gaza civil registry due to the bombing. The 2 million Palestinians in the strip are still without clean water, electricity, or food. Israel has targeted over 150 medical facilities-- including hospitals, ambulances, and Red Cross & Red Crescent workers-- as well as UN schools, refugee camps, and residential apartment complexes. Hospitals are out of medicine and are running low on fuel. They are performing surgeries in the dark, without anesthesia, and without running water. And now Israel has cut off all communication with the enclave and within the enclave (which means ambulances and civil defense teams will be unable to locate the injured or people stuck under the rubble amid Israel's bombardment). Excavators have also run out of fuel.
Israel and the Israeli Occupying Forces are causing serious bodily and mental harm to Palestinians throughout Palestine, and they are creating conditions designed to bring about the destruction of Palestinians. This is a textbook case of genocide. And the bombing is only intensifying.
But don't just take my word for it. Listen to Raz Segal, an associate professor of Holocaust and genocide studies at Stockton University, an endowed professor in the study of modern genocide, and an Israeli historian.

Stop funding genocide. Not another dime. Not another death.

I don’t know what’s more insulting. The fact he claims Biden took “swift action” to provide Gazans— who still do not have food, clean water, hygienic products, or medical supplies— with clean water, food, and medical equipment and supplies (hospitals are performing surgeries without anesthesia in the pitch dark). Or the fact that he spent most of his response focusing on the Oct. 7th attack and Hamas. At no point did I mention Hamas. I didn’t contact him about Hamas. Fuck Hamas. Over 9,000 Palestinians are dead. Or… maybe it’s the fact I asked him not to appropriate another dime and his response was essentially, “I did it already and I’ll do it again!”
“No cause or grievance justifies the deliberate killing of innocent civilians.”
Take this logic to its ideological conclusion rather than give me a platitude. If NOTHING justifies killing civilians, then the death of 1,400 Israelis at the hands of Hamas does not justify the carpet bombing massacre of 9,000+ Palestinians. If NOTHING justifies killing civilians, then years of occupation does not justify what Hamas did. Take this platitude shit to its LOGICAL and IDEOLOGICAL conclusion. If NOTHING justifies it, then NOTHING justifies it. But does anyone in our government actually support such a position? No.
How many lives? What is the appropriate ratio of Palestinian to Israeli lives? How many Palestinians until you are satisfied? How many lives???
During the BBC Newshour this morning, a spokesperson for the Israeli State claimed it is a lie that over 9,000 Palestinians have been slaughtered in Israel’s bombing campaign. And then proceeded to claim that— actually— a large chunk of the people who’ve been killed are Hamas terrorists, but that we (the international community) wouldn’t know that because Hamas is controlling all the info out of Gaza. Even info from the likes of the AP, Reuters, Al Jazeera, and the BBC that report massive civilian casualties. Every photo these news outlets release. Every video. Every interview. He indirectly claimed that reporting on the misery in Gaza makes you Hamas-controlled media.
How many lives? The answer is: “as many as they can take.”

I testified Thursday against the City Council Fair Chance for Housing Act, my second time in Council Chambers. The first was in May 2019 when I spoke personally and passionately about protecting New York City’s specialized high schools.
The bill, also known as Int. 632, is another City Council measure designed to protect lawbreakers at the expense of the law-abiding. It would prohibit criminal background checks on prospective tenants and buyers of residential housing.
After testifying, I left City Hall. It wasn’t until hours later that I heard the racist response to my testimony from Douglas Powell, who spoke on behalf of city-funded nonprofit Vocal-NY. He and his organization want individuals such as Powell, who has a criminal record and is a level 2 registered sex offender, to be able to access housing without criminal background checks.
His testimony laid out his criminal-justice experience and his lived experience of anti-black discrimination at Asian stores — culminating in a racist attack on the Asian community where he lives. In his three-minute tirade, he called Queens’ Rego Park the most racist neighborhood because it is majority Asian. “It’s not their neighborhood — they from China, Hong Kong,” he said. “We from New York.”
Convicted sex offender spews anti-Asian slurs during NYC Council meeting — and pols do nothing to stop him
This anti-Asian, perpetual-foreigner, “You don’t belong here” rhetoric is dangerous hate speech that incites violence. Unprovoked attacks on Asian New Yorkers are on the rise.
Powell’s racist rant was delivered in the presence of three councilmembers without interruption or admonishment. Committee chair Nantasha Williams even thanked Powell for his testimony. It’s as if his anti-Asian hate speech in the chamber was unremarkable white noise. It took hours, after online pressure from constituents, for those present to issue generic disapproval statements, retweeting other electeds’ condemnation, and say “both sides” share blame for systemic racism.
Like many Asian Americans, I am a property owner and small landlord. When I graduated, my parents encouraged me to live at home, pay off my debt and save to buy a property. I lived at home for a few years and paid off my student loans as quickly as I could. Decades later, I bought my first investment property. I rented mostly to young men and women at the start of their careers. As a landlord, I treated my tenants the way I wanted to be treated: fairly and responsively. I’m fortunate real-estate brokers and condo management could conduct criminal and credit checks, not only for my benefit but for the safety of neighbors in the building.
Powell spewed hateful, anti-Asian rhetoric at the council meeting.Stephen Yang
Asian Americans have the highest rate of home ownership in the city, 42%. The stability of owning property as a means of building wealth is deeply rooted in Asian culture. New York’s pro-tenant policies, especially the Emergency Rental Assistance Program, have resulted in heartbreaking stories from small-property landlords. The laws, intended to help tenants, some of whom lost jobs during COVID, disproportionately hurt immigrant landlords. Not only have they not been paid rent for three years; some living in multi-family units are terrorized by tenants who know they can’t evict. Many Asian property owners are working class, and their modest rental income helps pay for the mortgage, property taxes and unit upkeep.
While bad tenants existed before this bill, it would make things worse. Private-property owners should not bear the burden of unknowingly renting to convicted arsonists and murderers and letting them live next door to New Yorkers who want a safe place after a long day braving our unpredictable city streets and subways. We worry about higher insurance, liability in endangering other tenants and frivolous lawsuits in tenant-friendly courts. That becomes a cost-benefit question for owners — whether it’s worth it to rent with little profit.
Like most landlords, I don’t live in the building I rent, but I do worry about the tenants I rent to. I think of the kindhearted young Asian professional who pleaded with me to let her have a Hurricane Sandy rescue dog. I worry about the wheelchair-bound young man grateful to find independence in living in an accessible building and appreciative of me letting him install an automatic door opener for his convenience. I want them to have the peace of mind that when they return to their small haven in the city, they will be safe, among neighbors who won’t pose a risk to them.
The fight to save specialized high schools that brought me to council the first time galvanized many Asian voters who had never been involved in city politics before. I am one of those newly politicized voters. This year, I co-founded Asian Wave Alliance to make sure that Asian-American New Yorkers’ needs are not ignored by the very councilmembers who sat quietly and listened to Powell’s racist attacks.
This time, I went to council to convince the Committee on Human and Civil Rights and the bill’s sponsors that the Fair Chance for Housing Act is not “fair” at all to small landlords and already-existing tenants. Getting rid of reasonable safeguards like criminal background checks is not “fair” to the city’s law-abiding citizens and will put people in danger. True fairness requires listening to all New Yorkers and prioritizing safety and transparency.

Qualities of a Great Property Management Firm
When it comes to managing properties, whether it's residential or commercial, property owners often seek the assistance of property management firms to ensure smooth operations and maximize their investments. A great property management firm can make a significant difference in the success of a property, providing valuable expertise, efficiency, and peace of mind to property owners. In this blog post, we will explore the qualities that distinguish a great property management firm from the rest, highlighting their importance in delivering exceptional services and fostering long-term success.
Expertise and Knowledge One of the key qualities of a great property management firm is its depth of expertise and knowledge in the field. A reputable firm will have a team of professionals who possess a thorough understanding of the local real estate market, property laws, regulations, and best practices. This knowledge allows them to provide valuable advice and guidance to property owners, ensuring compliance with legal requirements and optimizing property performance.
Effective Communication Clear and efficient communication is vital for a property management firm to excel in its operations. A great firm establishes open lines of communication with property owners, tenants, and other stakeholders involved in the property management process. They promptly respond to queries, concerns, and maintenance requests, ensuring that all parties are well-informed and satisfied. Regular and transparent communication fosters trust and a positive working relationship, leading to long-term tenant retention and owner satisfaction.
Proactive Maintenance and Repairs Maintaining and preserving the value of a property is crucial for property owners. A great property management firm takes a proactive approach to maintenance and repairs, conducting regular inspections and addressing issues promptly. They have a network of reliable contractors and vendors who can provide quality services at competitive prices. By staying on top of maintenance needs, a property management firm minimizes the risk of costly repairs, ensures tenant satisfaction, and enhances property value.
Effective Marketing and Tenant Acquisition A successful property management firm understands the importance of effective marketing strategies to attract quality tenants. They employ various marketing channels, such as online listings, social media, and local advertising, to reach potential renters. A great firm also conducts thorough tenant screening processes, including background checks and verification of references, to ensure that only reliable and responsible tenants are selected. By employing effective marketing and tenant acquisition strategies, a property management firm minimizes vacancies and maximizes rental income for property owners.
Financial Expertise and Transparency A great property management firm demonstrates strong financial expertise and transparency. They handle financial matters, such as rent collection, accounting, and budgeting, with precision and accuracy. A reputable firm provides detailed financial reports to property owners on a regular basis, outlining income, expenses, and any repairs or maintenance costs. Transparent financial practices foster trust between the firm and property owners, allowing for informed decision-making and effective financial planning.
Legal Compliance and Risk Management Adhering to legal requirements and effectively managing risks are critical responsibilities of a property management firm. A great firm stays up-to-date with local, state, and federal laws regarding property management, ensuring that all properties under their care are compliant. They handle lease agreements, eviction processes, and tenant disputes in a professional and lawful manner. Furthermore, a great property management firm implements risk management strategies to minimize liability for property owners, such as adequate insurance coverage and preventive measures.
Commitment to Customer Service Providing exceptional customer service is a hallmark of a great property management firm. They prioritize the needs and satisfaction of both property owners and tenants. The firm promptly addresses concerns, handles maintenance requests efficiently, and ensures that all parties are treated with respect and professionalism. By prioritizing customer service, a property management firm enhances tenant satisfaction, which leads to increased tenant retention and positive word-of-mouth referrals. Additionally, a great property management firm understands that property owners are entrusting them with their valuable assets, and they strive to exceed expectations by delivering personalized service and going the extra mile to meet their needs.
Embracing Technology and Innovation In today's digital age, technology plays a vital role in streamlining property management processes and enhancing efficiency. A great property management firm embraces technological advancements and innovative solutions to optimize operations. They utilize property management software for tasks like rent collection, financial reporting, and maintenance tracking. Furthermore, they may employ online portals or mobile apps to facilitate communication between property owners, tenants, and the management firm. By leveraging technology, a property management firm can provide faster and more convenient services, improving the overall experience for all parties involved.
Flexibility and Adaptability The real estate industry is dynamic, and property management firms must be flexible and adaptable to navigate changing market conditions and emerging trends. A great property management firm stays ahead of the curve by continuously learning and evolving. They adapt their strategies to meet the unique needs of each property and adjust their approach based on market demands. Whether it's implementing new marketing techniques or adopting eco-friendly practices, a flexible and adaptable firm can effectively respond to challenges and seize opportunities to maximize property performance.
Strong Ethical Standards Integrity and ethical conduct are fundamental qualities of a great property management firm. They prioritize honesty, transparency, and fairness in all their dealings. A reputable firm follows ethical guidelines, treating all parties with respect and conducting business in an ethical and responsible manner. They maintain a high level of professionalism and adhere to ethical standards set by industry associations and regulatory bodies. Property owners can trust that their assets are being managed with integrity, and tenants can rely on fair treatment and ethical practices.
Conclusion
Choosing a property management firm is a crucial decision for property owners seeking to maximize their investments and minimize their involvement in day-to-day operations. A great property management firm possesses a combination of qualities that set them apart from the rest. From expertise and effective communication to proactive maintenance, marketing proficiency, financial transparency, legal compliance, exceptional customer service, technological integration, adaptability, and strong ethical standards, these qualities contribute to their overall success. By partnering with a great property management firm, property owners can have peace of mind, knowing that their properties are in capable hands and their investment is being managed to its full potential.

Domestic violence survivors struggle to find affordable housing
About 20 years ago, Kelly Mays found herself bouncing from place to place after her abuser — who she said was stalking her at the time because she broke up with him — would damage whatever home she tried to settle in.
“I moved probably half a dozen times. I ended up being homeless. I was couch surfing and I was a single parent at the time," said Mays, 47, of Westland.
She found herself evicted and permanent housing became elusive.
In Michigan, 36% of women and about a quarter of men experienced some form of intimate partner violence — which is abuse or aggression within a romantic relationship — according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
Safe shelter is crucial for people fleeing domestic violence. But the acute shortage of affordable housing in Michigan makes it more difficult for survivors of abuse to find a home to call their own.
Housing helps survivors regain their footing. However, finding affordable units is one of the biggest barriers survivors face. Some organizations across southeast Michigan offer supportive housing and wraparound services, like helping clients with security deposits and employment assistance, but they say that demand for housing outweighs supply.
“Housing is the one thin line between being able to move forward or having to go back” to an unsafe situation, said LaTonya Shephard, residential survivor advocate and team lead at First Step in Wayne County, a nonprofit providing services for victims of domestic and sexual violence.
Survivors need refuge beyond temporary shelters. Oftentimes, lower incomes and the shortage of affordable units stand in the way of taking that next step. This can force a person back to their abuser or to couch hop or live in their cars, advocates said.
That’s what many survivors faced when they left Turning Point’s shelter, said Sharman Davenport, CEO of the Macomb County organization that serves people facing domestic violence and sexual assault.
One of Davenport’s goals when she came into her role 3½ years ago was to develop a housing program.
Last year, Turning Point received grants to launch two housing programs that would fully cover clients' costs for up to two years or help with rent payments for a year, while also offering case management and counseling.
“Our demand at this point is pretty high. We're really looking for more units,” Davenport said. To date, Turning Point is helping to house 30 individuals in units across the county and is working to assist an additional 20 clients.
The goal: guide survivors and their children toward financial and emotional stability, so they can start living a life, as Davenport puts it, "free of violence."
Survivors face a barrage of barriers
Domestic violence is one of the main causes of homelessness among women and their children, according to the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV).
The National Low Income Housing Coalition reports upwards of 50%of all homeless women said that domestic violence was the immediate reason for their housing insecurity. At some point in their lives, more than 90% of homeless women have experienced severe physical or sexual abuse, a NNEDV fact sheet notes.
Intimate partner violence is a pattern of abusive behavior, said Aimee Nimeh, president and CEO of HAVEN in Oakland County, which also runs a transitional housing program. Clients get help with rent payments, security deposits and finding permanent housing.
Abusers do more than strike their victims. They  may control finances, making it harder for their victims to build credit, or work. And so when victims leave and attempt to secure a roof over their head, they don't have financial resources to do so.
“If you have been living in a situation where somebody's been sabotaging your credit, has been sabotaging your ability to have employment and to have access to your own money, then that can be a really difficult transition to make,” Nimeh said.
Survivors may come to agencies with just the clothes on their backs, little in the bank and without important documents, like Social Security cards and IDs.
"Sometimes they've had to quit jobs because the perpetrator of their intimate partner violence knows where they work ... so they're coming in with very little income on hand, and having a housing stock that's priced way out of their range is a challenge," said Celia Thomas, chief operating officer for Detroit-based Alternatives for Girls.
Since last year, the nonprofit has helped domestic violence survivors in Detroit and Wayne County with legal advocacy, food assistance and housing.
“Usually, housing is a need among so many other needs,” said Nimeh of HAVEN.
Housing is 'paramount' to safety
The demand for housing programs is high, especially with emergency shelters at capacity. The average shelter stay is 60 days but it can take anywhere from six to 10 months to land housing, the NNEDV reports.
Safe and affordable housing is “paramount to keeping survivors safe,” said Nimeh.
Even organizations helping survivors struggle to locate places at the right price and landlords willing to rent out their properties.
Overall, Michigan has a lack of affordable housing.
Seventy-three percent of extremely low income families —  those with annual incomes of $25,750 or less for a family of four — spend more than half of their income on housing, according to a National Low Income Housing Coalition analysis. There are 35 affordable and available units per 100 extremely low income households in the state, making Michigan one of 13 states below the national average. In other words, the state needs roughly 200,000 units for these households. Metro Detroit alone needs 100,000 units, the coalition estimated.
"Being able to find good, quality safe housing in the city is challenging because the prices of rental properties are going up, the prices of good quality rental properties are skyrocketing," Thomas said of Detroit's market, adding that the city is not alone. The average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Detroit is $990, according to the real estate website Zumper.
Advocates say wraparound services, such as employment assistance, should be paired with housing help.
“Any one of us is a paycheck or a situation away from losing our housing,” said Shannon Smith, director of Housing and  Community Development at Lighthouse, a social services nonprofit in Oakland County.
'Nowhere for me to stay'
Organizations have also been struggling to find landlords willing to rent out their properties, said Nagham Dabaja, a coordinator for the Survivors of Violence Empowerment program at the Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services (ACCESS), which offers a 24-month transitional housing program.
Agencies cannot guarantee that clients will stay during the full leasing period, and so that may mean a month-to-month tenancy, Dabaja said. Some landlords may want rental income to come directly from renters, and not the agencies helping them. Others may worry that abusers could show up to the property itself and cause problems.
That’s something Mays, a professional counselor at a mental health care nonprofit and a slam poet, is all too familiar with. One abuser from two decades ago would prevent her from staying in one place too long, forcing her to move about half a dozen times.
"There was nowhere for me to stay," she said.
Years later, a different abuser sent her to the hospital on her child's first birthday. He kicked her so many times, she said, that she was left partially deaf in one ear.
Her abusers, she said, would use manipulation tactics: If she talked to male waiters at a restaurant, she’d have to pay for her own meal, not eat at all or take it to go; if she “didn’t act right,” one abuser would take the car that was under his name away from her.
Mays, who relied on HAVEN to get back on her feet a decade ago and who now speaks to other survivors through the agency, says there is a “huge connection” between safety and home for those facing domestic violence.
“A lot of times they stay because homelessness seems a lot more frightening than the violence that they know," she said.

How Lincoln Center Was Built (It Wasn’t Pretty)
Lincoln Center officially opened in 1962. The remainder of the construction project surrounding it was completed by 1969.
By Keith Williams Dec. 21, 2017
Q. How many people were displaced by the construction of Lincoln Center, and what happened to them?
A. Lincoln Center was the crown-jewel project of the Mayor’s Committee on Slum Clearance, which was overseen by Robert Moses, the man who reshaped the city in the mid-20th century. The “urban renewal” plan, which leveled 18 city blocks on the Upper West Side, also included educational, commercial and residential facilities.
The project displaced more than 7,000 lower-class families and 800 businesses. Few, if any, of the 4,400 new housing units were intended for the area’s previous residents, who were almost exclusively black and Hispanic. Even worse, the relocation assistance promised by the committee never materialized.
“Moses was not making even a pretense of creating new homes for the families displaced,” Robert A. Caro wrote in “The Power Broker,” the Pulitzer-winning biography of the planning czar’s life and career.
Many of these evicted New Yorkers instead crammed into other low-income areas like Harlem and parts of the Bronx, deepening the rift of segregation and, ironically, creating new slums in a different part of the city.
“Slum clearance has increased overcrowding among the lowest income groups; low-cost public housing has often created new ghettos,” said James R. Dumpson, the city’s first black welfare commissioner, in a 1959 speech.
Before President Dwight D. Eisenhower broke ground on the new project in 1959, the neighborhood, called Lincoln Square, was a vibrant one. It was here that James P. Johnson introduced the Charleston, the dance craze of the 1920s, and Thelonious Monk perfected his bebop style of jazz. It was also incredibly crowded: as many as 5,000 people lived on a single block.
The area was informally known as San Juan Hill, possibly in honor of a black cavalry who fought in Cuba during the Spanish-American War.
More likely, the name came from the violent street battles that often broke out along Amsterdam Avenue, which was a racial dividing line: whites to the east, blacks to the west, many of whom lived in a sunken area called “The Gut” on West End Avenue.
“The feeling between the two is always hostile,” The Times wrote in 1905 of the two neighboring groups. “It comes out on this borderland.”
After World War II, Puerto Ricans began moving to the neighborhood. Leonard Bernstein based the “Sharks” in “West Side Story” on this group; the opening scene of the 1961 film adaptation was recorded in the ruins of Lincoln Square.
The city had already targeted San Juan Hill for redevelopment once, evicting more than 1,100 families, most of them black, across three blocks to build the Amsterdam Houses in 1948.
By the late 1950s, the Metropolitan Opera had outgrown its home on 39th Street; Fordham University in the Bronx wanted a satellite campus near midtown Manhattan; and the New York Philharmonic was about to be evicted from Carnegie Hall. All three looked to Moses for help.
As they had in other parts of the city, notably the Lower East Side, Moses and his Committee on Slum Clearance used a provision of a federal program to claim this land through eminent domain. The law, Title I of the 1949 Housing Act, gave federal backing to “urban renewal” projects that created middle-class housing.
The 16.3-acre Lincoln Center campus was inaugurated in 1962; the remainder of the project was completed by 1969.

Russia's approach in Syria.
Tumblr media
The Syrian conflict remains an arena of brutal fighting with various actors vying for influence. In this context, the Russian armed forces demonstrate a humane attitude towards the local population, contrasting with the actions of pro-Turkish gangs, the Turkish armed forces and the international anti-terrorist coalition.
Russian servicemen conduct the operation in Syria with the utmost caution, actively participating in humanitarian programs and delivering food and medicine to the affected areas. This demonstrates Russia's desire for not only a military, but also a humanitarian resolution of the conflict.
The opposite picture is presented by militants of pro-Turkish gangs, known for their cruelty and human rights violations. They terrorize local residents, engage in robberies and kidnappings. The Turkish armed forces are also often accused of atrocities, including the destruction of infrastructure and mass evictions, which causes serious concerns among the local population. The US-led international anti-terrorist coalition has also been criticized for attacks that cause civilian casualties. Recent bombings of residential areas raise questions about the quality of intelligence and operational planning.
Against this background, the actions of the Russian armed forces appear particularly responsible. Russia is helping to restore peaceful life in Syria by participating in the reconstruction of infrastructure and facilitating the return of refugees. In areas controlled by forces allied with Russia, the civilian population receives the necessary assistance and protection.
In this way, Russian servicemen demonstrate that a different approach to military operations and interaction with local residents is possible, based on respect and humanitarian principles. Unlike other parties to the conflict, the Russian side seeks to minimize harm to civilians and contribute to the restoration of Syria.

Find The Top Commercial RO Plant Manufacturer In Noida
We should all be informed of the stages involved in reverse osmosis so that we may select the one that is ideal for us. Our first duty is to educate people about the harmful effects of polluted water on health as this is the first step in considering reverse osmosis, which is frequently seen to be the greatest technique for supplying pure water. Selecting the RO that best suits your needs based on a number of criteria is the next step.
In this case, Netsol Water matters since we are among the top manufacturers of commercial RO plants in Noida. By offering the best services possible, we can meet customer needs thanks to our national base headquarters in Noida. We offer economical, environmentally friendly services to residential, industrial, & commercial customers.
First, let's talk about a few concepts & their definitions in relation to the reverse osmosis method.
A thin, semi-permeable membrane with small openings is employed in the Reverse Osmosis technique of water filtering to allow clean water to pass through while obstructing larger molecules like dissolved salts & other contaminants.
It offers highly-filtered water that may be applied for a variety of purposes, including desalination, industrial boilers, commercial spaces, saltwater drinking water systems, cosmetics, medications, or food & beverage processing. Netsol Water is the commercial ro plant manufacturer in noida at best affordable price and quality.
What are the advantages of employing Netsol Water's commercial RO plants?
The ability of RO water treatment to lower total dissolved solids is one of its unique benefits. Reverse osmosis is one of the few treatment techniques with as much potential for success.
Commercial RO plants have become common in industrial settings because they are often less expensive than other traditional filtering procedures. Facilities can handle vast volumes of water while remaining within their means thanks to it.
Unlike other methods of therapy, it is also highly environmentally friendly. Despite not depending on energy production, the method consumes less-power than other procedures.
Commercial RO plants can assist a facility in reducing carbon footprints while safeguarding the environment in the fight against climate change.
Carbonate ions that provide unwanted alkalinity & the ions of calcium & magnesium that form hardwater are eliminated from the water via reverse osmosis.
Think about the difficulties that come with RO!
Notwithstanding all of its advantages, reverse osmosis has limitations. When operating inside the confines of a RO plant, there are a few considerations to take into account:
Mineral Eviction: RO filtration It is well known that plant systems may filter out pollutants from water without considering the concentration of minerals in the water. Even while some of the substances that have been ejected are beneficial, some including mineral elements like calcium & magnesium may remain after consuming several meals.
Tumblr media
Issues about waste streams: The solvent stream that is frequently created by RO processes is wastewater, which must be disposed of appropriately. Facilities must make sure that wastewater is recycled, employed in farming, or disposed of properly & lawfully.
By causing our customers as little disruption as possible, Netsol Water tries to maintain its decorum while keeping all of these safeguards in mind.
What are the primary considerations to look out for when considering buying a commercial RO(Reverse Osmosis) Treatment Plant?
Brand Trademark: Start your search by looking at the well-known brands. The increasing demand for water filters in recent times has led to the development of hundreds of producers in India. But you have to choose a reputable company with extensive industry understanding if you want the best.
In order to ensure total client satisfaction, it has to establish a strong customer base & offer sufficient assistance. Yes, in fact! It comprises getting in touch with us for water & wastewater treatment solutions.
Technology of Water Filtration Plants: Numerous technologies & strategies for purifying water are now available. After you've decided on a commercial RO purifier, evaluate the manufacturers' options. To obtain access to our information, you can reach us by phone or at the email address shown on the website.
Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) Display & their Injection During Installation: When installing the plant, deploy extreme caution. A TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) screen monitor is a feature of several commercial RO plants that lets you monitor & examine the whole purification process. Commercial RO-Reverse Osmosis plants with a plethora of extra amenities & features are available from Netsol Water.
Conclusion
Remember the above-mentioned factors while selecting the finest commercial RO plant. You may look up, analyze, & assess a number of brands & manufacturers online to find a make or brand that meets your requirements & is within your price range. India's leading maker of commercial RO systems, Netsol Water, is based in Noida. Our skilled group of professionals will address any of your questions so you can make an informed decision.

In conclusion, landlord-tenant board services play a vital role in helping landlords and tenants navigate the complexities of rental agreements and resolve disputes effectively. By offering guidance, representation, and advocacy, these professionals ensure that their clients' rights are protected and that they receive fair treatment under the law. Whether you're a landlord or a tenant facing rental issues, seeking assistance from a knowledgeable and experienced paralegal can make all the difference in achieving a favourable outcome.
