Preserving New York's Past: The Importance of Historic Preservation and Restoration Services in NYC
Preserving the rich history and heritage of New York City is an essential part of maintaining its unique character and charm. From the iconic brownstones of Brooklyn to the towering skyscrapers of Manhattan, the city is home to a wealth of historic buildings that tell the story of its past.
However, preserving these historic buildings is not just a matter of maintaining their physical appearance. It requires a deep understanding of their historical significance, the materials and techniques used in their construction, and the challenges that come with maintaining them in a modern urban environment.
Tumblr media
That's where historic preservation and restoration services come in. These specialized services are designed to help property owners and managers preserve the historic character and integrity of their buildings while also ensuring they meet modern safety and building code requirements.
Historic preservation services in NYC typically involve a thorough assessment of a building's historical significance and condition. This may include researching its history, analyzing its architecture and design features, and identifying any areas of deterioration or damage. Based on this assessment, preservation professionals will develop a comprehensive plan for restoring and maintaining the building's historic character while also addressing any necessary repairs or upgrades.
Historic restoration services in NYC, on the other hand, are focused specifically on restoring buildings that have suffered significant damage or deterioration. This may include repairing or replacing damaged materials, restoring historic features and finishes, and ensuring that the building meets current building codes and safety standards.
Tumblr media
Restoration of historic buildings in NYC requires a high degree of expertise and specialized knowledge. Historic buildings often require specialized materials and techniques that may not be used in modern construction. Preservation professionals must also navigate a complex web of regulatory requirements and approvals to ensure that the restoration work meets all relevant standards and guidelines.
Overall, historic preservation and restoration services are critical for maintaining the unique character and charm of New York City's historic buildings. Whether you are a property owner, manager, or preservation enthusiast, these services can help ensure that these important landmarks are preserved for future generations to enjoy.

The David N. Dinkins Municipal Building (originally the Municipal Building and later known as the Manhattan Municipal Building) is a 40-story, 580-foot (180 m) building at 1 Centre Street, east of Chambers Street, in the Civic Center neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City. The structure was built to accommodate increased governmental space demands after the 1898 consolidation of the city's five boroughs. Construction began in 1909 and continued through 1914 at a total cost of $12 million (equivalent to $242,396,000 in 2021).
Designed by McKim, Mead & White, the Manhattan Municipal Building was among the last buildings erected as part of the City Beautiful movement in New York. Its architectural style has been characterized as Roman Imperial, Italian Renaissance, French Renaissance, or Beaux-Arts. The Municipal Building is one of the largest governmental buildings in the world, with about 1 million square feet (93,000 m2) of office space. The base incorporates a subway station, while the top includes the gilded Civic Fame statue. In one hand the statue holds a five-pronged crown, symbolizing the five boroughs of NYC.
The first offices in the Municipal Building were occupied by 1913. In later years, it received several renovations, including elevator replacements in the 1930s and restorations in the mid-1970s and the late 1980s. The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission designated the building a landmark in 1966, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

The Empress has no Clothes!!
The new wing of the Natural History Museum in NYC has opened to rapturous reviews. The interior of this $450 million building is made of shotcrete, which is normally used for swimming pools. People are drinking the Kool Aid, wanting to appear hip. Where would you rather look at dinosaur bones? In a ersatz swimming pool or a glorious hall like the old buildings of the New York museum?
I recently learned that the beautiful Carnegie library in my home town was demolished and replaced by what looks, to all appearances, like a suburban spec office building. I spent my childhood learning to love reading, and, ultimately, architecture, in the nooks and crannies of the old library. How could a child do that in a spec office building?
In the 1950's inumerable historic buildings were defaced with new modern facades to bring them up to date. Many of these, like the Reading Terminal Headhouse, were later restored. Now we are doing this all over again, apparently having learned nothing. When are we going to learn to treasure what we have and resist the urge to follow fashion?
Perhaps never.

Wood Stripping
We are beginning our next project in a neighboring building on Putnam Ave In Bed Stuy. This is a 1890's Renaissance Revival home a much smaller floor plate than our previous projects but a very exciting amount of original detail and great bones. While we await plan filings we are have begun the laborious and very messy project of stripping the woodwork.
There are more than 10 coats of paint varnish on much of the woodwork, Stripping detailed woodwork can be while almost as costly as updating electrical. or plumbing systems, but it is crucial to maintaining the traditional beauty and enhancing the value of the home.
There are various products and each paint stripping specialist seems to prefer. Unfortunately many of the more effective products have toxic fumes and are found only in small hardware stores bought only via code word. Each. wood stripping specialist has their preferred material. Citrus Peel can get the job done but with exhaustive effort. Peel Away is still a favorite for many. Others prefer to remove the paint with heat guns which can leave scorch marks on wood if not done very carefully.
We began stripping wood on site. in areas. where the wood and marble aren't moving. We will soon be taking off most of the doors and molding and stripping the rest off site, which will a fraction of the cost of stripping the work site work.
Will post photos as we go along.

Bungalows in New York City: A Hidden Architectural Gem
When people think of New York City, they often envision towering skyscrapers, bustling streets, and iconic landmarks like the Empire State Building or Central Park. However, nestled within the fabric of the city's vast architectural diversity is a lesser-known but charming housing style: the bungalow. While not as widespread as brownstones or high-rise apartments, bungalows  NYC represent an intriguing slice of the city's history and architectural heritage.
What is a Bungalow?
Bungalows are a style of small, single-family homes typically characterized by one or one-and-a-half stories, low-pitched roofs, and wide front porches. They became especially popular in the early 20th century as part of the Arts and Crafts movement, which emphasized simple, handcrafted design and a close connection to nature.
Although the bungalow style is most commonly associated with suburban developments in places like California or the Midwest, a few neighborhoods in NYC boast clusters of these quaint homes. Their presence offers a unique contrast to the more vertical and densely packed cityscape that surrounds them.
Where to Find Bungalows in NYC
The Bungalow Colonies of Far Rockaway (Queens): One of the most notable concentrations of bungalows in NYC can be found in the Far Rockaway area of Queens, especially near the ocean. Originally built as summer vacation homes for middle-class New Yorkers in the early 20th century, these bungalows provided a seaside escape from the city's heat. Though many have since been replaced or modified, clusters of these charming homes still exist, retaining their original coastal charm.
Richmond Hill (Queens): Another area where you can spot a number of bungalows is Richmond Hill. Developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the neighborhood has a mixture of architectural styles, including a small but significant collection of bungalows. These homes, while more permanent than their Far Rockaway counterparts, still reflect the simple, functional design that defines the style.
Bungalow Row in Staten Island: Staten Island, known for its more suburban feel compared to the rest of the city, also has its fair share of bungalow-style homes. Bungalow Row, located in the South Beach neighborhood, is a unique enclave of these homes, many of which have been preserved or restored over the years. Their proximity to the waterfront adds to their charm, reminiscent of their original intent as vacation homes.
Other Notable Areas: While these three neighborhoods boast the highest concentrations of bungalows, scattered examples of this architectural style can be found in other parts of Queens, Brooklyn, and even the Bronx. These homes often exist as part of older, historic districts that have managed to retain their architectural diversity.
The Evolution and Future of Bungalows in NYC
In the early 20th century, bungalows were seen as an affordable and practical solution for middle-class families. They provided a sense of homeownership and space, with a small footprint and limited upkeep. However, as New York City grew and evolved, many of these homes were either replaced with larger apartment buildings or significantly altered to accommodate modern living needs.
In recent years, there has been a renewed interest in preserving and restoring these architectural gems. Their historical significance, combined with the allure of single-family living in a city dominated by high-rises, has made them an attractive option for homebuyers and preservationists alike.
However, the challenge remains: many of these bungalows are located in areas prone to flooding or coastal erosion, particularly those near the beaches in Queens and Staten Island. This has led to discussions about how to best protect and preserve these homes in the face of climate change and rising sea levels.
Conclusion
Though they may not be the first image that comes to mind when you think of New York City architecture, bungalows have carved out a unique and enduring place in the city's landscape. From the beachside retreats of Far Rockaway to the charming enclaves of Staten Island, these homes offer a glimpse into a different era of New York living. For those willing to seek them out, they provide a quiet, nostalgic retreat amid the hustle and bustle of the city.
As NYC continues to grow and change, the future of its bungalows will depend on the balance between development and preservation. But for now, they remain a testament to the city's architectural diversity and history.

Discovering Excellence: Petrillo Stone Company's Legacy of Craftsmanship in New York
Tumblr media
Antonio Petrillo laid the first stone of what would become one of the most significant stone working company NY teams ever to grace the city in 1907. This was long after the influence of Dutch architects, Georgian-style symmetry, or the Federal/Gothic revivals that provided the high steeples you’ll see throughout the city.
Instead, our company began at a time when art deco and modernism were all the rush, but we wanted to focus more on elegance and longevity. That instinct to look beyond into the future by only crafting the best possible structures using our store of natural stone, artisan skills, and advanced technology is what has allowed us to maintain our spot as a leading stone working company NY team for generations.
AT the root of this legacy is Italian stone working. This was the perfect foundation to expand into New York City as major buildings, companies, and institutions all sought to solidify their presence in and around the area. Over the years, we have developed solid partnerships and network connections around the many artists, architects, designers, and homeowners the city knows. From the iconic structures of the United Nations Headquarters to the imposing nature of the Lincoln Center, we have always focused on marrying aesthetic beauty with functional and structural integrity.
These innovations are why we are sewn into the very cultural fabric of NYC. You’ll find the precision touch of our artisans in the many public spaces around the city, communal areas where historical events are hosted, and even the serene parks that only a lucky few get to see in the middle of one of the world’s busiest locations.
Most importantly, we continually seek to refine our skills and technologies. Every single year we meet with industry partners and attend training courses or conferences that expand our capabilities. We do this because when we look at the skyline of NYC, we see the history of our stone working company NY founders staring back through time.
Today, Petrillo Stone Corporation is a leading provider of premium quality stone fabrication that works for anything from a small home on the city’s outskirts to a thriving new museum boarding Central Park. Our association with everything from recent buildings to historic building restoration is why we often are the first name to come to mind whenever any project is being considered in NYC.
To learn more about how our legacy of stone working company NY beauty and precision can boost your upcoming project, give us a call. We are always happy to discuss how we can blend our unique skills, techniques, and network of materials to any sized endeavor. With over 100 years working as NYC’s leading stone working company, we are your first choice for a wonderful outcome merging beauty, architecture, natural materials, and precision.
