Rex wasn’t the best guy up until getting shot in the second season, but that wouldn’t matter if you guys were dating, except for the fact that he would apologize to you and try his hardest to be a better boyfriend.

He might have misgendered you on accident the very first time you guys met, but when you corrected him that didn’t happen again. He might have been a dick sometimes, but he isn’t a bigot.

I like to think Rex is secretly into fashion at a low level, since he’s into stuff like decorating. So, he would be excited to help you plan your outfits.

Since he is a government experiment, he wouldn’t have that deeply ingrained image of gender either, so he wouldn’t care too much about you, your gender, or your way of expressing yourself.

In the beginning he wouldn’t be into wearing anything feminine himself though, since he’s quite insecure and unsure about himself and the image he puts off. But that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t support you.

His insecurity would have crossed over to how people treat you though. Since disrespecting you is also disrespecting him, but also because he loves you and doesn’t want you getting mistreated.

This leads to him getting into fights, both verbal and physical, since how dare they treat you like that? Who the fuck do they think they are? They can taste his damn explosions if they’re gonna keep that shit up.

In the beginning his acts of defending you can be quite a lot, since he takes peoples comments more personal that you do. To the point where he might even get snippy with people who do it on accident even if they correct themselves immediately after being informed.

But after getting shot in the head and rethinking a lot about himself, Rex would become better at dealing with himself, his emotions and his reactions.

This not only leads to him being a better boyfriend in general, but also not reacting so quick to violence and anger if somebody says the wrong thing or looks at you wrong. He still keeps a sharp eye on people though, especially when you are dressing the ways you prefer.

Where in the past Rex would make a loud scene, after the bullet he would be more lowkey. And by that, I mean, pull the person to the side or just quietly tell them that if they don’t stop nobody would be able to find the pieces of their body after he blew them up.

Of course he doesn’t always end up using threats of death, but that’s mainly because he knows you wouldn’t like it. to Rex, being transphobic on purpose deserves it, but since it wouldn’t be what you and others wanted, he would keep it as a last defense. Or at least wait for no one else to be around.

He makes sure to check up on you afterwards too. Rex would try to be subtle, but he isn’t really the most subtle guy. So, when he’s trying to see if your okay and affirm your gender, he says something like “you know you’re the most handsome guy I know, right?”

After understanding himself better, he might even get the interest in trying to wear different things. At this point I can’t imagine him wearing it in public, but when he’s alone or together with you, he might put on a few different things to see how he feels.

Rex always gets embarrassed about it though, especially if you comment about it, even if it’s telling him it looks good. So your best bet is to not mention it until he brings it up himself.

Marina sneaks out of her bed to visit Rex after the Lizard League battle in s2

if you want you can watch me infodump below the cut (mentions some stuff abt Atom Eve, one line abt Monster Girl, and obv Rex) 💚❤️

Marina gets very overstimulated in medical settings since she doesn’t get fatally hurt often (until the lizard league fight we see in s2) and because she’s been isolated for most of her life (you’ll understand when I post her backstory).

During the lizard league battle, her vocal chords undergo extreme strain and damage to the point where she can’t speak or use her powers afterwards, her wings get shot up while trying to protect her body, and she gets shot a couple times in the torso because she couldn’t protect herself with her wings anymore.

While she did majority of her healing in her hospital bed, she received visits from the other Guardians (mainly Amanda, who would do her best to comfort her and explain that the nurses and doctors aren’t there to hurt her and bring Marina her favorite snack: strawberries). Not only did she get to see familiar faces, she met some new ones as well. Eve was about to deliver more home decorating magazines to Rex when she got a glimpse of Marina lying in bed. When she entered the room, Marina was confused at first since she didn’t know who she was but then quickly recalled who she was based on an old photo Rex had shown her a week or two prior. Before meeting Eve (so basically based on the photo), Marina thought she was really pretty and admired her but never knew a lot since Rex avoided talking about her. While Eve was in Marina’s room, she introduced herself and they both got to know each other (Marina has to communicate with a notepad in order to let her voice heal). The two quickly became friends and led to Eve also visiting Marina whenever she came to visit Rex (at one point, Eve made a bunch of new clothes for marina to wear with her powers when she found out she didn’t have a lot to wear back at the Guardians of the Globe hq).

One time, Marina asked why Eve was always carrying the magazines and she spilled the secret about Rex being into home decor and how he never had a home (similar to what she tells Mark when he sees her). Their original conversation likely turned to talking about Rex and Marina finding out a lot about him through Eve. Before the Lizard League fight, Marina had cared for Rex the same way she cared for all the other guardians, maybe sometimes more than she should when they would have their moments together, but she never thought much about how she felt. They fought well together, he helped her loosen up during fights, and he was a good friend outside of superhero stuff, he got a little arrogant at times, but Marina would always be there to humble him. Overall, Marina thought Rex was a pretty good guy.

After knowing what he’s been through, Marina felt sad for him. It kind of explains why he could be a dick at times, but obviously doesn’t excuse it. Despite feeling bad, she kind of got the ick when she found out that he cheated on Eve. Noticing that Marina had gotten the ick, Eve quickly explained that his behaviors are improving a bit after almost dying in battle which made Marina feel better about him. After moving on from that topic and talking about other things before Eve left, Marina was left in her hospital bed, her mind drifting back to Rex. She thought about their friendship, then about her feelings for him.

Now whenever she thought about him, she’d get this urge to give him the affection and security he’s lacked for most of his life, she wanted to be the one to give him another chance. All of these feelings, along with the pain from her wounds, and anxiety of being in a hospital, it all fucked with her mind a lot. Marina was debating if she had romantic feelings for Rex or not. When she knew she was ready to get up and start walking around again, Marina sneaked out of her hospital room and went to go visit him. It made her heart ache to see him in such a state, still recovering from removing the bullet in his head and losing his hand. They continued bonding with each other like they normally do and this one time secret visit soon turned to Marina sneaking out of her room everyday to visit Rex. After a number of visits, Rex began realizing that he’s had feelings for Marina for a while now. He knew he wanted to change from his old ways and thought that Marina might be able to take him a step closer to that goal. He wants to treat her well, better than he’s treated his past relationships. Rex wanted to give Marina the best, because that’s what he thought she deserved. After mustering up a lot of courage (I feel like he has trouble talking about his feelings sometimes), he sat Marina down and told her everything. To his surprise, Marina reciprocated his feelings and from that point on they decided to go into a relationship.

So for the drawing, I saw a photo of two parrots cuddling and got inspired to draw Rex and Marina. A cute concept I had fun thinking about was Marina having bird-like tendencies, such as whistling (her equivalent of chirping ig), her wings getting ruffled if she’s going through an intense emotion, etc. I thought it would be adorable if Marina tried cuddling Rex like a parrot would (I provided a reference photo) while he was in his hospital bed. She was probably overstimulated since she had just finished receiving new wraps for her wounds and a check up and went to Rex for comfort. Another cute detail I added was that Marina is wearing one of the outfits Eve had made for her over her chest wrap (which is why you can’t see that cast/bandaid thingy).

You met Rex during Guardians of the Globe tryouts. You had also seen him get his ass beat by Monster Girl. Luckily, after this incident, he was less of a douche overall.

However, things changed once the Guardians started to become a team. He would try his best to be around you whenever he could. You would be running on the treadmill, and then all of a sudden he was running next to you. You could be making a sandwich, and he would be making his right next to you. Or you would sit and read your book, and he would scroll on his phone near you, occasionally glancing up at you when he thought you didn't notice. You did.

Then one day when you were pummeling a punching bag, he asked if you would like to get coffee sometime. You knew he had feelings for you, and you felt in your bones you should say yes.

A date to an art gallery and one dinner later, you and Rex made it official and told the team, who seemed shocked. Either you were exceptionally good at hiding your relationship, or they just couldn't believe you would date Rex.

You love your personal space, Rex also loves your personal space. The two of you could be walking down the street, it would have to be hand-in-hand, or maybe his hand would be in your back pocket. This annoyed you to no end at first but quickly you understood the constant wanting to be close to you was because he wanted to protect you. You would never admit it, but you loved him.

His favorite time to be in your personal space is during a fight. He would bottle the feeling of you guys standing back to back using your powers to protect each other. When you crushed invading aliens who wanted to kill him, he never felt safer. You made him feel safe.

Simply, he loves to make you laugh and smile. Even though you keep a straight face and hard demeanor around other people, you are a totally different person than when you were with Rex. Somehow his silly sarcastic personality leaked through into yours, and he could make you giggle without even trying.

He loves to see you train with the other Guardians, especially Invincible. Being from a demonic bloodline, you could go toe-to-toe with the Viltrumite, without too much damage, and more often than not you would best the newer hero. After all, you could practically tear Mark apart with the darkness you controlled if you wanted to.

Of course, he hated when he had to fight you. Not because he was scared he would hurt you, no, he was scared you would hurt him. Even going easy on him, you would beat Rex easily. Teleporting away from any explosives he threw your way, and wrapping smokey black tendrils of darkness around him or, as gently as possible, throwing him into a wall with your telekinesis.

You would always apologize profusely after taking him down, but he would always reassure you that he loved you and your powers. Maybe you would even explore using your powers in more intimate places in the future.

However, once in a battle with Machine Head and his goons, you start to be overwhelmed with the other's pain. When Rex saw you fall to your knees all he could see was red. You held your head in your hands and started to feel yourself lose control.

Your eyes glazed over black, and you screamed. At this point, Rex had just taken out Machine Head and started running over to you as objects all around you started to float and shake. Kneeling next to you, he took your hands in his.

"Hey, babe, come back to me, everything is going to be okay. You just need to come back," Everyone who wasn't passed out on the ground looked at the tense scene in front of them.

They all knew what could happen if you truly lost control of yourself. You had once leveled a skyscraper only to rebuild it moments later.

Still, some part of you listened to Rex and allowed yourself to come back to wherever in your mind you retreated to. You allowed yourself a vulnerable moment, letting yourself slump into Rex's arms. He held you tight until the medics arrived, and still held your hand when you were carried away on a stretcher, even though you promised you could walk.

Rex could never let anything bad happen to his girl. You were his everything and the only person he would let his sarcastic walls down for. You appreciated the black roses, and eventually black dahlias he would get you after telling him it was your favorite flower.

He would bandage your wounds after a battle, once you took care of him because you always insisted on patching him up first. Kiss your bruises whenever he sees them. He would put his arms around you when he saw your eyes unfocus and zone out, and bring you back to reality.

He would tell you he loved you at every chance he got and showed you off every time he got the chance.

"Look at this picture of my girlfriend, she's so hot"

"Did you see her fight? She's just so amazing"

"Ah she just makes me feel, so differently than I ever have before"

He practically drooled every time you walked by him. He loves the way you look. Anything you wear he wants to rip off of you and start to kiss every part of you. It could be your skin-tight leotard and cape, your casual sweater and jeans look, or your silly Rex-Splode pajamas he got you as a joke.

Rex has always helped you with the nightmares that plague you when you sleep. When Rex lost his hand in the fight against the Lizard League, you still regret not being there, you helped him through his nightmares. Soothing his mind and, with his permission, lulled him back to sleep with your powers. He knew that subconsciously you were calming him down to the best of your ability, and he knew why he always slept better when you were around. 

You treated Rex like more than he ever saw himself as, and he didn’t treat you like the monster you felt you were. You each healed something inside the other, and if that’s not love then you don’t know what is.

“i just thought it’d be nicer.” rex mumbles as he rolls around in your bed, eyes closed with strands of hair falling over your pillows, the blankets shifting as he rolled over onto his stomach. you roll your eyes, having spent almost 15 minutes searching for your house keys when you could’ve just looked into the new little bowl he’d placed on the counter. you place a kiss on his forehead before leaving for work, nodding in agreement. “it did, i really like it… it’s cute, rex.” you smile, panic over as you rush to get into your car. he was such a heavy sleeper, you’d had to shake him awake five times before he’d opened his eyes.

when he first meets you, he tells you he’s a hero straight off the bat. he really liked you, okay!? he couldn’t risk messing up, especially not when he had something so perfect at the moment. he’d seen and heard what keeping secrets could do to relationships between heroes and civilians. you aren’t surprised, maybe even a little bit insulted when he’d told you, it didn’t take a rocket scientist to work out ‘rex sloan’ was ‘rex splode’.

his sense of humour is immaculate, makes you giggle with just a side eye sometimes. you have an inside joke going where you give each other a glance while talking to others, something that makes you both almost burst out laughing mid conversation. you didn’t mind if it made you both look a little bit rude. you guys only enjoyed each others company, anyway.

romance is top tier; personalised fireworks just for you, coming home to see that you wouldn’t have to worry about making dinner because he’s already bought home takeout by the time you’re home. one night, he’d placed everything like he had made it himself but you’d caught on that he hadn’t as soon as you tasted the food. (he wasn’t a good cook by any means, you had to learn that the hard way)

get ready for your home/room/whatever to be rearranged, he’s really big on home design and your space is his space. just like the cat dish, you slowly start to notice things appearing until you enter your bedroom one day and realise it would look like a whole other home compared to the way it looked last time. you really didn’t mind too much, you welcomed it. he really needed this, maybe it was his way of winding down.

“blinds or curtains?” rex asks, face buried in the magazine you’d picked up on the way home for him, his finger circling the page, “you just put curtains up last week, rex.” you roll your eyes, laying down next to him so you could rest your head in his lap, letting him balance his pages on the side of your head. almost every week you’d find him setting up a new dresser, installing lights into your ceiling, the whole nine yards. it was refreshing being with rex, it seemed like he never wanted to sit down, always doing something, you were just grateful that he’d make all the time in the world just for you. “right, yeah, but hear me out on this one: sparkling blinds this time.” he flips the page around to show you the nardo grey blinds with glitter embedded, you nod your head in agreement, “i hear you, i do… next week maybe.” you smile back, giggling when he closes the magazine to kiss you on your nose.

you liked to shower with him but rex loves to bathe with you. he loves sitting in front of you with the back of his head on your chest, loves having you wash his hair for him even if he had to bend his legs uncomfortably for you to both fit in the tub. rex flinches when he stands up to get out and your palm connects with his butt, taking him by complete surprise. he almost slips and falls which makes you laugh so hard you thought you wouldn’t be able to breathe, “ouch- hey!” he says, steadying himself before wrapping the towel around his waist quickly. “i would never do that to you- okay, maybe i do but that’s besides my point!” you can only laugh back in response, watching as he sticks his tongue out at you and grabs you your towel, wrapping it around you when you emerge from the bubbly water with suds sliding down your back.
