You snap a few pictures of your new lingerie in the mirror, satisfied by the way the fabric hugs your curves. With a sigh, you toss your phone on the bed and pout for a second, wishing you didn't have to wait until date night to reveal your surprise.

Then a thought tickles the corner of your mind. Steven actually sends dirty texts all the time, but that's usually what they are - texts. Words.

You imagine him working hard at the museum, leading a tour or sitting in his shared office doing some research and you giggle to yourself as you try to envision his face when he sees you in this brand new sensuous outfit.

Without another moment of debate, you grab your phone and swipe to the most scandalous pose before dropping it into Steven's text thread, adding 'Got a surprise for you' underneath.

Thirty-seven minutes later, you hear the front door deadbolt turn. You haven't even bothered to change out of your lingerie yet - tying a robe around yourself instead.

Determined footsteps clomp toward your bedroom, the thought never crossing your mind that they don't belong to Marc.

Steven's hair is a mess - clearly he's pushed his fingers through it one too many times on the train ride home. His cheeks are flushed, lips parted as he draws heavy breaths, eyes dark and hooded...

and zeroed in on the curves of your body.

"Bit naughty of you to send me that picture while I'm giving a tour to primary school students," he husks, peeling off his jacket and stalking toward you.

"What are you doing home?" you gasp out with mock innocence.

Long fingers find the tie of your robe and he yanks it loose, swiping his tongue over his lips as the very lingerie you teased him with appears.

Shifting from one foot to the other, his smoldering eyes rove hungrily from your collarbone, over each curve, all the way down to the center of you. Ever mesmerized by beauty and softness, he swallows thickly, his own desire stirring to life as he forces himself to wait before devouring you with his mouth and hands.

"Surprise," you whisper, shrugging the robe all the way off your shoulders and striking a simple but effective pose meant to highlight the best features of the lingerie, and your body.

Dropping to his knees, he tosses his hair out of his eyes, peering up at you through endlessly long lashes. Squeezing his hands into fists, he fights every urge pulsing, inviting him to trace the soft, sexy fabric that has you on display like this.

But he knows to wait.

"You're so good to me, Steven," you praise, carding a hand through his curls, inching gently toward him. "Got you something soft to play with."

"Gods, love," he chokes, forehead nuzzling your stomach as he struggles to keep his hands in place by his sides.

"Do you like it?" You murmur, using the grip on his thick hair to turn his face up to yours.

You hum out a satisfied moan, nodding once, indicating that he can touch. Stretching out his fingers, he brushes your bare thighs temptingly, heavy breaths falling where his head stills rests against your stomach.

Seeing this beautiful man on his knees for you already has you stirring with raw want.

One agonizing inch at a time, he seems to return the favor, making you wait for the impending bliss that's sure to follow this display of restraint.

"So pretty like this," he whispers, finding the hem fitted over your hip bone. "Wonder how long it might take me to unwrap you like a present."

Now it is you shifting in anticipation, aching for his expert caress to find the center of you.

Went on a research spree

Have you ever thought about Gotham??

I've seen it referenced as "the largest city in America", and I'm assuming it's by population rather than land area.

Irl the biggest city in America is New York, with more the 8 million people and 469 miles square or 754 km square (including some 150 miles square of water).

It is BIG.

But the largest city in America by land area is Sitka in Alaska and New York doesn't even make it to the top 25 (it's 28).

And since New York does exist in the DC universe, it means Gotham probably has around 9 million people (NY is 8.6).

And this fact is funnier when you remember that Gotham has a Lady Gotham that is heavily inspired by the Statue of Liberty.

It's a HUGE city to cover for one fucking human and Batman is absolutely insane for always saying "Gotham is mine" and "I work alone". I'm surprised there isn't at least one other vigilante hero working the day shift and going under his radar, or like in a specific district.

(I've seen that in batfamily fics they sometimes assign a district per bat, but idk how canon it is).

I'm really curious as to Gotham's land size and neighboring cities. Blüdheaven (what a fucking name btw) is called Gotham's little sister I think? And in Under the Red Hood (don't quote me on it, I'm high and trying to remember my sources) Batman and Red Hood are standing on a tall building and they can see Blüdheaven's atomic explosion from there, pretty closely I'd say. But it varies from 40 minutes by car to 2-3 hours by train. Very confusing.

On the other hand Metropolis is said to be Gotham's twin city from across a bay. I read in a comic recently that it takes 2-3 hours by car to get from one to the other, which surprised me. In the DC Universe Online game the cities are so close you can glide for 2-3 minutes and get there. I'm aware it could be for gameplay purposes, but even in DC Super Hero Girls the cities are separated from a pretty small bridge.

Now get this, the bridge linking Gotham and Metropolis has said to be the longest suspension bridge in the WOLRD. Irl the longest is 2023 meters (~2km or 1.2 miles) so if there's only the bridge to go through, it's not a 3 hours ride.

Now where am I going with this?

Changbin was known for his rapping skills, fiery passion, and sharp wit. He helped Chan carry the weight of Stray kids on his shoulders, but his heart had remained partially hidden from the world.

That was until he met you. You were a vibrant soul with an infectious smile, you had unwittingly captured Changbin’s heart. You had been friends for months, but Changbin had held back his true feelings for you, unsure of how to approach the situation. However, fate had other plans.

“Hey Changbin! What’s up, I haven’t seen you in a while.” You ask with a bit of excitement in your voice.

Changbin’s heart fluttered at the sound of your voice. He turned around to see your radiant smile. “Hey, I’ve been great. Just prepping for our next comeback. You know how chaotic things get.”

“Yeah, it gets chaotic. My group goes through the same thing.” You reply

Changbin nodded, his gaze lingering on your face. “Ah, that’s right. You’re an Idol too. I forget about that sometimes. It must be really tough for you though. Juggling promotions, performances, and just keeping up with all the chaos. Especially since people expect more from female groups.”

“You should know just as well as I do by now, we just go with the flow.” You answer

Changbin lets out a hearty laugh, the sound echoing through the hallway. “You’re right. We’ve seen our fair share of ups and downs in this industry. Sometimes I wonder how we keep our sanctity intact.”

“Friends and sleep are how I manage to do everything.”

“Ah, sleep. The precious thing we never get enough of,” Changbin replied with a weary yet playful tone. “I rely on it just as much as our fandom relies on our songs. And friends? Well, they’re the real MVPs. They keep us grounded.”

You nod “Hey, how have you been doing with all the chaos? I know sometimes you forget to check in on yourself.” You ask.

Changbin's expression softened at your concern. “Honestly? It’s been a rollercoaster ride, but I try to not let it get to me much. I’ve realized that taking care of myself is just as important as taking care of the group. It’s a constant battle, balancing being the strong one everyone depends on and also remembering that I’m human too.” You nod your head in agreement “It’s very important to remember that… Do you have this afternoon off?” 

Changbin looked at his phone to check his schedule. “As a matter of fact, I do have this afternoon off. Why do you ask?”

“I just wanted to go somewhere that’s not our place of work to talk with each other, to catch up.” You reply

Changbin’s face lights up with a warm smile. “Sounds perfect! I could use some time away from all the hustle and bustle. So, where would you like to go? Somewhere quiet or someplace with a bit more action?”

“Somewhere quiet, for sure.” You answer.

“Alright then, how about we head to my favorite cafe? It’s a small, cozy place tucked away in a quiet alley. They have the best coffee, and it's perfect for some peaceful conversation.” Changbin suggested with a contented smile.

“Alright, I’m down. I’ll pay unless you want to.” You state feverishly

“I’ll pay! It’ll be my treat, dear.” Changbin replied with a chuckle, playfully bumping his shoulder against yours. “After all, I wouldn’t dare make such a captivating woman pay for her own refreshments.”

“Dear? Captivating?” You repeat back with a bit of shock.

Changbin chuckled, a hint of bashfulness creeping onto his cheeks. “Ah, you know me. I’ve always had a tendency to say things without filtering them properly. But yeah, you’re captivating, and I mean it. Your energy, your passion, everything about you captivates me.”

“So, you like me?” You ask teasingly

Changbin blushed even more, his voice tinged with a hint of playfulness. “Don’t tease me. You already know I do. But just to reaffirm, yes, I like you. A lot.”

You pause for a second, “I like you too.” You mumble slightly.

Changbin’s heart skipped a beat as he processed your words. A bashful smile spread across his face, and a light blush dusted on his cheeks. “You do?” He asks softly, a mix of surprise and joy in his voice.

“Mhm, how could I not? You’re a very easy person to fall in love with.” You reply. “Now, can we go get that coffee?”

Or: Yams has no idea of geography and the relationship between distance and travel times in AOT makes no sense.

PART TWO: GEOMETRY AND PONIES

In the first part, we’ve seen how freaking huge the distances between the main districts of the Walls are. Here is a summary:

Center-Sina: 250 km

Sina-Rose: 130 km (Center-Rose: 380 km)

Rose-Maria: 100 km (Sina-Maria: 230 km; Center-Maria: 480 km)

To go from a District to the next on the same wall:

Along wall Sina: 393 km (352 if cutting in a straight line between the two)

Along wall Rose: 597 km (537 in a straight line)

Along wall Maria: 754 km (~720 in a light curve, as straight line not possible)

Here’s a summary of the shortest distances (combining radius and chords) between districts:

Throughout canon, we see the characters moving between a handful of Districts. To the iniciated it may look like said travels are a tad too fast considering the means of transport that they use. It’s okay. The insta-travel effect has been seen in every other epic fictional world, be it the Middle Earth, Westeros or Narnia. And we’re willing to suspend our disbelief. But AoT has a crucial difference in that sense.

We’ve been told the exact distance between the walls. In kilometres, not some fictional or obscure, ancient measure unit. Suspending disbelief does not come easy when the numbers are exact.

It’s like when you’re watching a movie, and the hero has only 10 minutes to get to the bomb before it detonates, so he races through the streets of, say, Paris, and they go from the Louvre, to the Arc de Triomph, wreck havoc on a market along the Seine, rush through Montmartre, around the Eiffel Tower and skid to a halt when the car crashes in front of the Opera. And most people will be ok with that, but the few millions who live in or know Paris are like... Nope. That’s not possible. Not even with 007’s Aston Martin or the Batmobile. That makes absolutely no sense. It’s ten times worse if the hero is running.

Well, guess what, the Survey Corps do not travel in the Batmobile.

The Survey Corps travel by horse. On longer expeditions, they also have horse-drawn carts.

Now, if you fill up the tank of your BMW and pad your butt, you can drive the 480 km (road distance) from Berlin to Ansbach in about 4:40 hours without traffic. That’s not stopping for anything other than traffic lights, and using some of the best highways in the world. That’s an average of 102 km/h. With normal traffic, you could do that in 5:30 hours, averaging 87 km/h. That’s how long a badass modern car would take to go from Mitras to Shiganshina.

But, and this may come as a shock, a horse is not a car.

First and foremost, a horse cannot ride as fast as a car. As per the Publicly Available Information from canon, “The stable horses used by the Survey Corps are selectively bred (...) and travel for many hours without complaining. (...) Their top speed is between 75–80 km/h, and they can maintain a swift 35 km/h gallop. The horses are tenacious, able to maintain a fine speed of 20 km/h even when pulling a carriage.”

For one good thing in all this mess, numbers are in accordance with real horses. And I have no problem accepting that the SC horses are the cream of the crop when it comes to speed and resistance, like our fastest horses and most resistant horses combined. But horses, I repeat, are not cars.

Cars are machines. Horses are living, sentient beings. They cannot fill their stomach like a car a gas tank and run at top speed until it empties, rinse and repeat. They need food and water. They need shoes. They need bathroom stops (they can shit while walking, but they need to stop for pee). But mostly, they need rest. Horses can and do die of exhaustion. (And given that SC horses are super expensive, you don’t want to work them to death.)

A horse can maintain its maximum speed for only 3 km—4 for a race champion. That’s the maximum length of horse track races, actually. After such a sprint, they need to rest for a while. So even when dodging titans, you won’t do so at top speed – you just need to be faster than the enemy. Obviously, the slower the gallop, the longer the time it can be maintained, so sprinting at less-than-top-speed will allow to dodge more titans.

When you’re just travelling from point A to point B, then, you won’t waste the precious energy of the horse in a sprint. Those journeys would be made at a lower speed, for the faster you make the horse go, the more, longer stops it will need to rest, catch its breath, eat and drink. Likewise, if the horse is carrying weight, it will go slower and need more rest. Long distance horses can only cover 50–60 km per day—And before someone says endurance competition horses can run over 100–160 km in a day... that is not the same as 100 km per day, in the same way marathon runners don’t do 42 km per day; they do them in a day. The day of the race. After training specifically for that race. Then they rest for a few days. Horses are the same. Moreover, long distance endurance races have mandatory vet checks along the way to see that the horse is able to keep going. And if you have an expensive horse and no vet every 20 km to check it, you will take care not to push it, lest it collapses midway and the titans eat you.

So, considering SC horses are specially bred for endurance, we can safely equate them to long-distance working horses of our world; I’ll assume they’re the GOAT and can cover 60 km per day.

But wait! I hear some of you say. If they can go at 35 km/h, they can cover much more than 60 km a day! Er... no. Because they need to rest. They cannot trot at 35 km/h for 8 hours straight. They can’t even walk for that long without stopping to rest. Same as like Marathon runners never reach the same speeds as sprinters and middle-distance runners. 

Please note that this numbers refer to a single horse. You can cover longer distances, or cover a given distance faster, if you change your horse for a freshly rested one at given points. This is not an instant process: the new horse will have to be tacked and you’ll have to transfer the cargo, if any, from horse A to horse B (in AoT world, they cannot text the next station to have the horse tacked when they arrive). A convoy of several horses will be slightly slower and, I repeat, if there are carts, the whole convoy will be conditioned to the slowest cart (the horse/s will be slowed by the cart in the same way a car is slowed if you attach a trailer to it). In every rest station, the horse needs to be untacked and then re-tacked before continuing, same as hikers will put down their backpacks when taking a break.

For reference, The Pony Express, the fastest horse dispatch system ever, could cover 300 km per 24-hour day (they rode day and night). They managed to cover that much that by having a huge infrastracture that allowed the rider to change horses every 16-24 km, and pass the dispatch to another rider every 75 km or so. That’s 4-7 horses every 100 km.

So either AoT horses are more magical than My Little Pony ones or Yams cannot distinguish between a horse and a Ferrari.

Guess which one I’m betting on.

Side Comment: The Ferry

Talking about this with one of my fandom friends, she mentioned her bafflement that they didn’t use the ferries that we see in the first chapters evacuating people from Shiganshina to transport  themselves quickly from place to place. I thought she had a good point, so I looked into it. Thankfully for Yams though, I looked into this and it’s not really an option.

The steam engine is unknown in Paradis, so the ferries would have to be operated manually. (The publicly available info panel on the subject comes from the Lost girls OVA, so its canonicity is questionable, and it has contradictory info saying they are moved via wires along the river (as manual ferries do) but also that they are powered by the same gas as the VMG – which make little sense bc then you don’t need the wire and why not have a railway as well?). And the maximum speed a manually hauled barge can attain is not better than that of a horse. For a RL example, the fastest that horse-drawn barges travelling the Canal du Midi in the 19th century could reach was 32 hours for the 240 km ride... changing horses every 10km. Before that, it took four days. That’s 13 hours for 100 km – basically the same time it took the SC to go from Trost to Wall Maria in RtS, but without the possibility to change course if the road’s blocked or to dodge titans if they attack (and provided they had the fresh horses every 10 km, which they wouldn’t in RtS).

That said, I do think Yams totally forgot about the ferries.

Marlene spent the majority of the train ride lost in thought. She hadn’t intended to contact Dorcas when she reached London since she assumed that a brilliant woman like her had already moved on. Unfortunately, now that Sirius put the idea in her mind, it was impossible to ignore.

What if I see her with someone else?

As the dread washed over her, Marlene steeled herself against it. She needed to be prepared for anything. Even if she didn’t purposefully track Dorcas down, there was always a chance they’d run into each other. A small chance, but still possible.

Since when do I volunteer for heartbreak?

Suddenly, James waved a hand in front of her face to catch her attention. She pulled her ear buds out and lifted her eyebrows in question.

“We’re nearly there, Marls,” he said quietly, nodding toward the window. James turned to nudge his boyfriend, who had fallen asleep on his shoulder.

Marlene stared at the city skyline that she’d left behind a year ago with a mixture of regret and resignation. No matter what happened this week, nostalgia was likely to choke her up at every turn. London would always be synonymous with Dorcas in her mind and heart. This city was theirs, until it wasn’t.

“Hmm?” Regulus mumbled sleepily. “Already?”

James whispered to him as he gently smoothed the dark hair from his face. When Regulus opened his eyes, he simply stared at James blankly for a full minute before recognition visibly dawned on his face.

“We’re home?”

“No,” James said with a cheeky grin. “We’re in London to pick up your things. Home is in Edinburgh.”

Regulus blinked slowly, but didn’t react. “Oh.”

James’s grin widened as he continued teasing his incoherent boyfriend with a litany of increasingly absurd comments about their long-term plans. Marlene couldn’t help but grin at the mystified expression that spread over Regulus’s face. He appeared to be caught between mild fascination and bleary-eyed confusion as he stared at James.

“I don’t remember agreeing to move in with you,” Regulus said, shaking his head clear. His tone turned sharp as he caught on. “Wait, did you just say we were getting a pet monkey? James.”

Laughing, James ducked his head to avoid the annoyed glare from his boyfriend. “It was the monkey that did it? Not the wedding in Venice?”

Regulus’s cheeks flushed pink as he swatted James’s shoulder. “Hush. That’s enough talking for you.”

Marlene tossed her ear buds into her bag and readied herself to leave. She was happy for James, and Regulus by extension for finding James, but it wasn’t easy to watch them be happy. Particularly when their banter reminded her so much of what she had and lost. Marlene thought Dorcas would like Regulus, actually. She appreciated snarky people the way Marlene appreciated athletes, like was drawn to like.

As she shifted to one side to shove her phone in her pocket, it pinged with a notification. After scanning the screen, she smiled. Lily and Pandora were waiting at the station to meet them.

When the train pulled in, she popped up from her seat and allowed the slowing momentum of the train to push at her body. It centred her and shook the fuzzies from her brain. “Ready, James?”

“I was born ready,” he teased, joining her with a knapsack slung over his shoulder.

“Let’s go.”

They pressed through the crowd eagerly, but James was quickly waylaid in his attempts to protect Regulus from the wild elbows and crush of backpacks unknowingly shoved about. It was amazing how little spatial awareness people had with large bags. Marlene ignored it, too busy searching for the magnificent pile of red hair that should set Lily apart.

“Marlene!” a voice shouted excitedly. “Over here!”

The moment her gaze connected with the couple, Marlene’s shoulders sagged with relief. Marlene adored James, but she never felt more herself than when she was surrounded by women. Particularly beautiful and clever women like Pandora and Lily.

“You made it!” Pandora cheered, shimmying through the crowd with her girlfriend on her heels.

When they hugged her tight, Marlene allowed herself to relax fully. She’d missed this. Every day at the ice rink she was surrounded by testosterone and male-centred conversation. To be enfolded in the arms of femininity was a welcome respite. They both smelled so bloody good!

“We have a surprise for you,” Lily whispered in her ear. “Do you want to know now, or wait and see?”

“Wait and see.” Marlene leaned into her soft embrace and smiled. “I love surprises.”

upon a less hyped rewatch... porsche was definitely vibe checking tf out of vegas and the little pick me didn't pass. he's so different to vegas now vs when they were riding the bike together. /porsche was also wrapping kinn around his finger once he realized pete was sending intel back to their boss on any and all interactions porsche had with vegas.

now i could totally be putting too much thought into this but i think the drinking was an act. the entire episode we got porsche hesitating with drinks and i definitely think he's wiser now about accepting drinks. but after vegas made it known he knew things about porsche he had no right to know, porsche shifted, changed, to me. he wanted to sus vegas out and he needed to play a part and so he "drank". (arm and pete being plied with booze and then suddenly sober when porsche disappears with vegas also caught my eye.)

porsche goes with vegas. he stumbles, barely able to walk. he slurs his words. he wants vegas to talk, because he knows vegas was never far from him, always watching him. he knew vegas liked talking to him. his face when vegas was taking off his shirt, the look vegas didn't see, was sober. calculating. and then vegas kisses him and suddenly he's not drunk anymore, he's fucking shocked. that wasn't part of his dumb plan (or maybe it was in the back of mind, a test to see how vegas would go. kinn told him vegas was obsessed with things that kinn had.)

but do you know what was part of his plan? pete reporting back to kinn. he knew he was safe in this hostile environment because kinn would come for him the way he snuck out of the hospital to find him when he couldn't sleep. which is why he smiled when kinn showed up.

sure he absolutely miscalculated with vegas, hell he probably had no clue what he could get vegas to say but he wanted to help kinn, but he KNEW kinn would come for him.

and then kinn's fury also wasn't part of the plan and porsche definitely doesn't slur when he says he shouldn't have fallen for an asshole like kinn and he definitely doesn't stumble when he goes to leave.

he's trying so hard to fit into this dark underbelly he's found himself in. does he fuck up? yes. is he doing his best? yes.

i love aroace identities so much and i love how varied our experiences can be! i have a friend whose ace and completely sex repulsed and shes so valid! i have a friend whose aroace and doesnt want to be in a relationship and just doesnt care about either of those forms of attraction and hes so valid! im aroace and i have complicated feelings around romantic and sexual attraction and i experience them differently than the norm and im so valid! there are a bajillion different forms of aroace experiences in the world and we are all so valid!

All City of Brooksville government facilities will be closed on Wednesday, September 25, and Thursday, September 26, 2024, due to potential Tropical Cyclone Nine. This closure will include all City government offices, parks, and the cemetery. All normal City operations will resume on Friday, September 27, 2024. Residential garbage collection will cease operations during this closure and will adjust its collection schedule as follows: - Wednesday, September 25: The Sanitation Department will conduct commercial pickupsonly. - Thursday, September 26: The Sanitation Department will be closed. No sanitationservices will be available. - Friday, September 27: The Sanitation Department will resume normal operations andcontinue with the regularly scheduled residential and commercial pickups. - Please note that Thursday’s residential route will not be made up on Friday.
