It’s ace week again and I want to start by saying I appreciate the constant and consistent rise of overt queer representation in media. I really, really do. This post is not about that, but I did want to start by recognizing that we are definitely seeing a positive trend of queer rep and I’m not begrudging anyone that.

On the other hand.

Why is it that Sex Education, a show lauded for its depictions of teenage sexualities of all kinds, only openly discusses asexuality in one Very Special Episode?

Why is it that Brooklyn Nine Nine, a show respected for its diversity, only mentioned asexuality once and it was clearly meant as an insult?

Why is it that Faking It, a show inclusive of many teen sexualities and groundbreaking in its inclusion of a main intersex character, only references asexuality in a single throwaway line meant as a “we’ve collected them all” joke?

Why is it that Heatstopper, a show that gently yet explicitly includes all sorts of different identities in its main teen characters, doesn’t have a single reference to asexuality? And if Isaac or Tori were meant to be included as ace rep, why weren't they identified as such the way the rest of the characters were?

Why is it that Jughead, a character known in the entire run of comics going back to 1941 as having two defining characteristics: a disintrest in girls/dating and an obsession with food and who was made explicitly asexual in a 2016 run, was not made asexual in Riverdale when the opportunity presented itself?

Why is it that when fandom was presented with Good Omens they chose to call it “not queer enough” when the option to see Aziraphale and Crowley as ace or aro was very obviously there?

Why is it that I’ve seen BoJack Horseman, a show that has earned every Emmy it has won, praised as groundbreaking for having main reoccurring character Todd Chavez’s asexuality be a part of several different storylines only ever from asexual sources?

I know why. Do you?

Edit: I did address this in a reblog but since a lot of recent people seem to be finding this through the tags and this is happening with enough frequency I will add it here.

To all the helpful people in the notes telling me that a) Alice Oseman is aroace or b) that there are plans for explicit ace representation in season 2 of Heartstopper or c) that there are other publications within the Heartstopper universe that examines aspec characters...thank you. I know. That is actually most of the reason Heartstopper made it onto this list.

Because what that means is, a creator that *has* explicit aspec rep in other works, *has* explicit aspec rep in the main work that is the subject of the adaptation, and *is* aspec themselves made the choice to relegate explicit aspec rep to a second season that had not yet been secured at the time of writing season 1.

Setting aside that I know fuckall about what the adaptation/creative process was like or what TPTB were like during said process, from my perspective that fucking sucked. A lot.

Neil gaiman is such a fucking hack. All he does is ride off Terry pratchets coattails, gets. I really hate the word cuck but idk how else to describe the Amanda Palmer situation. Cucked by women and regurgitates that into flat one dimensional characters. Queer baits and panders to trashy online YA level drivel types. He’s the definition of the word fandom. If men like his garbage they’re always the kind of guy who has a beard and lets you know he has a beard. He probably owns a kilt despite not being remotely Scottish. Funko pop owner for sure, has a mini tardis and probably that dr who scarf. A pentagram tattoo, maybe some runes.

And like. Neil gaiman is a capable writer do not get me wrong. But his idea of creative writing is theorizing about how the afterlife is all bureaucracy bc that’s never been done by a bitter atheist. It’s always secularly Christian too isn’t it? I mean i guess that’s what he knows.

So im saying this knowing that he’s not solely responsible for it, really, and having read the comics and not enjoyed them at all but continued to have done so out of some weird sense of obligation, I’m very angry to admit that I’m enjoying the stupid Netflix production of dead boy detectives. It is absolutely a mishmash of other similar cw-type shows, but that’s just the thing. I eat that shit up. Riverdale, Sabrina, teen dramas with obnoxious editing and low brow production value. I even liked the second season of good omens despite like, hating a solid 40% of the secondary character and plot direction. It’s sorta like eating little Debbie cakes yknow? Or binging reality tv.

DBDA is better than all that, like it’s a crust above but it’s wrapped in the trappings of really shitty things, and whenever it manages to be a bit better it’ll sink a smidge lower by referencing its ilk or doing exactly what you’d expect of it.

Whenever I see the ‘two skinny whitish boys with obvious sexual tension and an annoying women in the middle’ I stop and ask myself— does this writer have a track record of making the same dynamic.

An obnoxious woman is not a bad thing. She can be a good thing even, but if she’s a mirror image of a million other toxic characters that indicates two things: projection, or a formula. Especially when paired between two male characters that clearly interact in ways that urge the audience to say ‘they should kiss!’

Then she becomes an obstacle. It’s rare for a character in this role to rise above the narrative, and even rarer for authors to try and write one capable of that.

A lot of fans will see people hating on her and cry ‘misogyny!’ Instead of asking why she was written, and why hundreds of other past iterations and future clones of her continue to be written. A similar character is the empty lesbian who stands in both popular media and fanfiction to prove that the author is not just obsessing over gay men and throws a bone to the supposed lesbian audience as well.

And then you have the flat poc or other LBT, sometimes disabled characters who serve to act as a tick mark off a checklist. It’s lazy, it’s annoying. But that’s a whole different can of vaguely related worms

Have you watched any of the edits that exist for Barchie? If so which ones are your favourite?

As there was a fan edit that is popular within the twitter fandom to the song “As the world caves in” that Lili ended up watching and commenting on like over a year ago.

I’ve seen some! Through I wasn’t actively on any fandom social media during Riverdale airing, I personally followed the cast and occasionally saw stuff through the algorithm, etc.

I remember seeing Lili comment on that edit and loving it!

My favorite edits are def that one/all the beautiful ones by @barchie-daily !

here's a little bit of communications history from an au of mine!

'Communications' first appeared as a tv show called "Number Street", airing from 1956-1959 in black and white. The show mainly followed the Elsners- Nancy, Henry, their teenage son Kenneth (or as we know him, Kennith), and their young daughter Poppy- as well as their neighbors and friends. Notable other characters were Shirley (Stephanie) and Gregory (Greg), Kenneth's best friends, and Poppy's two young accomplices, Brenda (Bri) and Ann (Avery). Some other notable reoccurring characters were Ray, Evelyn, and Nathan. Taking inspiration from shows such as I Love Lucy and The Honeymooners, the show was a sitcom that focused heavily on Henry and Nancy's relationship. It wasn't incredibly popular nor did it have the best budget- however, it was still enjoyable and somewhat charming.

Around the same time the case 1 fic became popular, a group of roleplayers began uploading edited versions of their au roleplays set in the 80s. The group was composed of three friends, one playing kenneth, the second playing "Shirley", and the third playing Gregory and Evelyn. The roleplayers chose to switch out the name Shirley with Stephanie, as they found it too "old timey" for the setting of their au, and used the name Greg as "Gregory's" full name. The au was pretty slice-of-life at first, with the angst being centered around kenneth's depression and being gay in the 80s (adopting the popular headcanon), though it soon took a dark turn after one of the users read the case 1 fic and wanted to take inspiration from it. It first started as Evelyn going on a killing spree and Kenneth commiting suicide but was eventually rewritten into kenneth hijacking a national news broadcast. The fic was deleted after the friend group fell apart and was considered lost for a time until somebody reuploaded it onto fanfiction.net years later. the original ending is still considered lost media.

At the height of the comic's popularity, another adaptation was made- "communications" as we know it now! somewhat. A user who went by thetellerofstoriezz or Spoiler online wrote two songs based on the original popular fanfics, "housewife radio" (of which there were two versions- they remastered it) and "colorbars", neither of which gained much popularity. It wasn't until they released the final version of "housewife radio", which was based on the comic, that they got popular, leading to the creation of a comic-based remake of colorbars called "broadcast illusion". this song gained even more attention then its former, leading to Spoilers cranking out two more comic-inspired songs, "black & white" and "rotary dial". They later changed the meaning of their songs to match their own rewrite, which they discussed in length on tumblr, mainly though asks. their changes were bold, erasing poppy entirely and dividing the family to sort the characters into cases 1, 2, and 3. They had planned to release more music related to their rewrite, but cracked under the pressure and deleted their social media.

FINALLY the last adaptation to date! A reboot of "Number Street" was announced for streaming services (yayyy...). At first it was going to be a riverdale-style retelling of the original show, though while doing research, the writing team discovered the show's extensive fan-made lore and ended up changing the show entirely. It turned out as a sanitized version of Spoiler's retelling, with some (but not all) of the plot holes filled and a new soundtrack. Fun Fact: the young girl who played Poppy in the original show came back to play Frances in the reboot! the show followed each case throughout a season, originally pitching three seasons but hoping to be renewed for more, in which they would make new shit up. Unfortunately, they didn't make it past two, the show being abruptly canceled during the filming of its third season. The first season was published all at once, while the second followed an episode-per-week format.

It's not only the lili fans calling him a narcissist or were turned off by his interview. It's the media too. So the assumption it's only Lili Reinhart doesn't make sense. I saw tweets from other celebrities and journalists talking about his behavior too. Jezebel had an article.

I also saw a lot of complaints about him choosing to talk about his ex also his current co-star, when they aren't even finished filming Riverdale. They saw that as weird and insensitive, too.

Alright, Anon. Maybe I'm missing the media take. I don't use Twitter. So, I was using google and Yahoo. I found an Article from the rolling stones. I enjoyed that one. Saw one from Cosmo about people making fun of his smoking, but overall they liked his interview. I read a few more and watched a few more on YouTube, one of them being E and another being buzz feed, and they just said what he had said. Not anything about what he was saying was wrong or even off-putting.

I looked up a few more I saw more articles talking about the cigarettes or him saying Dylan was a bully vs. Lili. Now, I could be looking in the wrong places. Maybe I need to look up Cole/Lili or something. I don't have time for that.

I never said it was just the Lili fans. I like Lili, and she sometimes to me can come off as egotistical, selfish, and aggressive. However, I also know she's a homebody, and she doesn't like to be all that social, has anxiety, etc., so she can come off that way it doesn't mean she is. So, I won't write her off because I don't know her, and I do like her work.

People had hated Cole before she was in the picture, and they aren't going to stop, regardless. Yet, he still has a right to interview and say what he wants. The interview was edited; who knows what she had taken out, maybe should have left in. That's not on Cole. He's not the one asking them, and he did clarify some things.

If you want, you can look up that word and the way people do interviews; they should brag, boast themselves up, they will talk about themselves, and come off as self-centered. So maybe Charlie, by saying what she said, needed the attention, wanted to deflect, and create more drama, so isn't she one?

People complain about everything. My opinion is Cole told Lili he probably even asked her; he made it light, and he said being on the same show made it hard to find their footing in a way. I don't think he's wrong; that would be hard. I think Lili herself would agree. For all we know, Riverdale promoters asked him to go on the show. He might not have wanted to. You don't see him doing interviews. However, he did win something for Borrasca; he just finished a campaign for Canada goose or whatever it was. He ribbed Dylan some, he talked about his mom, and clearly, he has some trauma and some MH issues himself, so if you want to hate on him for it, fine, but honestly, he's human the relationship ended. I honestly would not have cared who ended it and why. That is their business.

If they are friends now and they work together, fine now. Do you think he would have told her? You think he put a lot of blame on himself as well. It is probably awkward anyway on that set.

I also never said it was just Lili. I also said I wasn't sure in what way Charlie used it. So, I was going off of what I thought she might have meant.

Anyway, I have no clue from what you wanted exactly. I like them both, and that's the way it is. They both have flaws. I have flaws, and you have flaws.

Yeah, Lili’s social media makes no sense. First off who posts old photos but her? this isn’t new, remember the backyard photo shoot that ended? 

And i’m still laughing about her november drop which was honestly a bunch of nothing photos and made no sense. And seemed like she was trying to be Taylor Swift and drop easter eggs through photos? like, seriously, one of those pics had a sign for coat checking. Why do you think thats a photo anyone cares about? She really thinks she’s much more interesting then she is. 

As for her riverdale video, well.. it was four damn parts and also, i did watch it but all of it was footage she had shown in previous years. minus cole where she could edit him out. And i’m not sure why she’s saying she didn’t get to say goodbye to riverdale, the show and the cast were able to because they. filmed up until the final days before the actors strike. Lili posted plenty of BTS content and even posted a final pic of herself as betty. Its funny that no one else in the cast seems to think they missed out on some big goodbye post. Which i think speaks volumes about career trajectories. Everyone else has moved on or hopes for better- the jury is out on if it will happen for a few of them- and lili who was long believer she could do better now seems stuck in the past. 

Again as you have mentioned, she has posted next to nothing about that movie she did with MR..which is again something to think about.

Hi this isn't meant as like a rude thing at all but if his asexuality being erased is considered relevant to Jughead's place in this competition I feel it's disingenuous to not also mention that he's aromantic in the comics as well.

His complete lack of interest in all things romance has been integral to his character long before they could actually use the words aromantic or asexual in popular media. It's something really important to me.

Yeah, I discovered his existence when people suggested him so I had no idea (and they told me he was alloace). Still, since I can't edit polls, and in Riverdale he does feel romantic attraction (although he's not asexual), we can merge the Riverdale part and the Comic part, making a fanon alloace Jughead. That's the only thing we can do so we can peacefully continue the contest, since this is for fun and not an official serious one /pos /npa

idk why people ignore any notion of social media etiquette when it comes to riverdale because they leave these same tired tags and comments and replies on like gif sets people spent hours of their time making it's enraging

i genuinely dont know. i think its a combination of like. 80% of the riverdale fandom being shockingly full of hatred towards the show despite continuing to watch it often for 1 of 4 reasons:

1. they decided they wanna fuck cole sprouse

2. they feel like they invested too much time and its sunk cost fallacy now

3. bizarrely obsessed with specific ships established in s1

4. hate it but think its funny so they keep watching

and also like people assuming its purely a grimdark archie comics au show taking itself very seriously from marketing/s1 being much less overtly camp compared to later seasons. though if you know where to look, you will see the hallmarks of self-aware camp (cliff-hanger.)

it also isnt big enough of a cultural touchstone to reach the status of supernatural, sherlock, homestuck, etc, where the mocking is affectionate at this point because of COURSE it was an important part of some peoples adolescence/early adulthood and helped them make friends 🙄 yeah its cringey at points but theres still some really good stuff and thats why i started watching at one point, its not all bad. it got bad at (x point)...etc etc etc.

because on the face of it seems to be something hated by watchers and of poor quality with a 'bad' concept, its low-hanging fruit to mock without desire for further context. someone making a gif/photoset/amv/fanfic/edit is obviously doing it as a joke. its crap. nobody actually likes it, right? its fine to mock. its fine. its Fine 🫡🫠🥴🤪🙃🫥🔪🔪🔪🔪

What do you think of the rumors that there’s another season 2 script rewrite happening? It’s hard for me to believe bc it feels so late in the game for another rewrite, and there aren’t any sources to back it up, but part of me is worried

I personally haven't seen anything about it, but that might just be because this is the only "social media site" where I talk about/engage with HOTD with any regularity so it's not going to be popping up on any feeds that actually show me any news.

I think it depends on the kinds of rewrites, honestly. Scripts for TV shows and movies aren't like novels, there's no point in which there's a final draft and that's It and it's never going to be touched ever again. There are constantly tweaks and edits made, things that are improvised or ultimately cut on the day of filming, things like that. And this is what pre-production is for, revising scripts and having the time to make any changes, particularly once characters are cast and writers might be changing certain things in order to accomodate how that character is now going to be performed (the way that the scripts for Stranger Things were changed when Joe Keery and Joseph Quinn were cast as Steve and Eddie and brought new dimensions the writers hadn't thought of when first writing the scripts).

If they're changing, like, the entire direction of the season and whatnot, then there's cause for some more concern, but again, rewrites and revisions is one of the main things that pre-production is for. Pre-production generally ends when locations are confirmed, all principals that needed to be cast are cast, and the scripts are finalized, finishing up drafts is literally the goal. If there's still hints going around that major restructuring and rewriters are happening once filming starts, then that's an actual problem. One of the things that made the most sense to me ever was when one of the Riverdale actors said that they generally get their final scripts the day of filming, because that kind of "by the seat of your pants" writing really shows in longform serialized storytelling like a TV show. But given that they're still in the stages where you're meant to be doing these kinds of rewrites, I'm not too worried.
