revisiting riverdale season 3 episode 4 "the midnight club" post-season 7 is insane because so many of the story elements that are constants in the different incarnations of the main cast (riverdale/50sdale) are also true for the parent characters. and they're portrayed by the same actors. do you understand? fred & hermione dated because archie & veronica did and alice & fp dated because betty & jughead did. in a sense they're just yet another alternate main cast, so even when portraying the parents these characters are still stuck in their own respective narratives because that's what riverdale is about

#riverdale #personal #it goes a lot beyond the ships but those were just the easiest examples to grab lol #like. fred stuggles with choosing between music and sports and cares deeply about his dad #alice's storyline is focused on being in control of her own sexuality + she's the one to discover the murder #hermione's having doubts about unintentionally being involved in hiram's crime/(career)#penelope is suffering at the hands of the blossoms/her abusive parents #sierra (mccoy) is a political activist who is trying to come into her 'voice' and make a career #and tom (keller)'s story is focused on his forbidden romance #and that leaves us with fp whose storyline is more reflective of jugheads s2 storyline except! it's subverted in most ways #because he's jughead and as a narrator he doesn't have to play by the same rules that everyone else does #it's so good i'm losing my mindddd

So if you direct your attention to figure B you'll see the horrible bangs Veronica Lodge was forced to wear before they let her hook up with Betty, the best friend she'd been ambiguously flirting with for years. Now look back to figure A, and Eddie Diaz's mustache. Yes, the one that makes him look like Mario. Remember he also has a best friend he's been flirting with for years. Do you see what I'm getting at here.

it’s also funny when people point out historical inaccuracies in riverdale well first of all because forget it it’s riverdale but also they clearly are in a parallel universe from the real world and have been the whole time (brand names being different for no reason, characters having multiple backstories, archie fighting a wwi style war with trenches in uzbekistan in the 7 years between 2021 and also 2021 but 7 years in the future, the entire episode they dedicated to explaining the fact that there are different universes). like the innaccuracy is a feature not a bug. you’re not in america you’re in riverdale and whatnot

#i mean the show is not only innaccurate to the real world it is innaccurate to itself because they're living with comic book rules #so like ''if they're in 1955 how come x y z?''. because the plot of their little story requires it #and tomorrow it might not! and they'll change it up again. and thats the fun part #riverdale #thing

fred andrews really watched his son get convicted for murder, get sent to juvie/prison, escape, then run away after being exhonerated, and when mr andrews finally finds him, instead of being like "hey archie let's get you home get you some therapy and work on that martyr complex of yours", decides to drive his teenage son to the canadian border and say "damn it sure would be nice if we could live in the wilderness together, to bad we can't ¯\_(ツ)_/¯" even though there's literally no reason he can't go with him and gives archie their dog before DRIVING AWAY AND ACTING AS THOUGH HE NEVER SAW HIS SON.

#and people are really out there saying he's the only decent parent in riverdale #rule number one of riverdale: there are no good parents #fred andrews #riverdale #riverdale season 3 #archie andrews #i mean listen #i understand that most media centered around kids/teens needs the parents to be a little absent or bad in order for the plot to work #bc if the parents are present and taking care of their kids then it's less likely they'll get into as much trouble as they do #and i'm not against that as a plot device in the slightest!#but when characters esp teens act as tho a parent is the best that doesn't mean that it's true #obvs fred's one of the better ones since he's one of the few not directly tied to a murder #but he's not great!#anyway #can you tell i'm rewatching riverdale season 3 lol #thinking a lot about the core four's relationships with their dads this rewatch #and about veronica and jughead parallels #but that's another post #myposts

i love how riverdale has completely forgotten that jughead is deaf. he can just hear the thoughts that will become words a second before they're spoken, letting him essentially be able to hear people. but jughead can't hear anything else. he can't hear his phone vibrate (he does), he can't hear explosions (he does), the show has just forgotten that this is how they set this up
